a/n: the plan for this series was always three parts, but then i got this small idea for an interlude that i really wanted to include so here it is <3 this is a little different but i hope it's enjoyable still! happy reading <3
main masterlist / series masterlist / ao3 / playlist
from the river to the sea, palestine will be free 🇵🇸 this account stands with palestine. the creator of tlou is a zionist, and the second game is largly based on israel/palestine. please, everyone who interacts, educate yourself about the genocide happening right now, and support/donate.
The snow moaned with each step he took. The muscles in his shoulders ached from the strap of his gun where it gnawed, and his arms were tired from carrying it around all day. On top of that he was cold. His fingers felt like icicles wrapped around the trigger.
Why was it always so fucking cold, Adam wondered.
The woods had started to grow dark around him as a crow played hide and seek between the trees. It had followed him all day. Back and forth he’d walked – on lookout, always ready. For what, he didn’t know, they hadn’t seen anything or anyone since they came upon the cabin.
How he wished to be back there right now. Back in the warmth with a warm meal in his belly.
He looked to the sky with disinterest. Over the treetops twilight deepened into a deep purple, like the color of an old bruise faded to black.
Nothing. No one.
The wind moved and cut right through him, down to the bone, and Adam started to wonder about when the last time he’d felt truly warm had been. The fire, maybe? When the curtains caught fire, it hadn’t taken long before the whole house was aflame.
Something deep inside him shrunk each time he recalled that day. Jonah had barked his hoarse voice at him. Orders, orders, orders. Do this, kill them, kill them all, and take what’s of value.
It had started to get old long before that night, and Adam couldn’t find a reason for why he followed the guys and Jonah anymore. The constant traveling was harsh and hard, especially in winter, with no place to settle for longer than a week at a time, killing and raiding whatever and whoever they came across. Maybe in the beginning it had been worth it, back all those years ago when Adam had felt like he’d had something to prove, something to prove to Jonah, to show his potential, a potential to lead.
But no, it had been years and Adam was always stuck on fucking scout duty. He hated scout duty.
He hated Jonah, too.
Adam wondered what he’d done to that girl. That bitch deserved to get put in her place, that’s for sure– she’d almost given him a speed ticket to hell if she’d been a good shot. She’d ran down the stairs while waving a loaded revolver around, sent most of the rounds into the walls. Somehow, he’d managed to grab ahold of the old woman, used her as leverage with his gun pointed to her temple. The bitch had gone dead silent, and Adam had known he had a clean shot had it not been for the old man. He’d been stronger than he’d looked, attacking Barkley, and giving Adam no other choice than to shoot the old woman. Adam could still feel the spray of her warm blood against his face.
Everything after that happened so fast. Adam couldn’t get a clean shot on the old man, and the girl had gone all crazy, shooting bullet after bullet into the floor, and now Barkley’s leg most likely had to be amputated.
If the wound doesn’t get you, the fucking infection will.
The bullets had drawn the rest of the crew to the living room, and soon both the girl and the man had been pressed against the floor with their hands tied behind their backs. Adam don’t know what happened next, too busy raiding the rest of the house for valuables, but somehow Jonah had decided to take the girl with them while they’d left the man for dead in the snow.
Adam felt a shiver run through him at the memories while the wind howled like a hound in his ear.
He should get back.
Wading through the snow, Adam dreamt of summer. His hand around his gun slackened in his grip while he filled his head with thoughts from before. Of long days at the public pool during summer break, the smell of a barbeque and freshly cut grass, of his mother waiting for him on the porch after a long day of running around the neighborhood with supper ready.
In his daydreaming, Adam failed to notice the shadow trailing him, how it kept to the darkness of the forest.
No mother stood ready for him on the porch of the cabin, only Jack on guard duty tonight. He looked as bored as Adam had felt in the forest.
“Did you see anything?” Jack asked as Adam approached him.
“Nah,” Adam shook his head as he walked past Jack up the porch stairs. “I’ll let Jonah know I’m back.”
“He’s with the girl,” Jack told him, “said he didn’t want to be disturbed.”
Adam felt a frown form across his face. Jonah with the girl? Jonah might be a hard son of a bitch, but he’d never laid a hand on a woman for as long as Adam had been a part of the crew. Not that the opportunity hadn’t presented itself… multiple times. Spoils of the raids Adam had taken advantage of time and time again. A man gets tired of his own hand after a while, and nothing beats a tight cunt. At first, Adam had thought Jonah didn’t swing that way, but nothing stays sacred for long in a crew like this, and one night Barkley had told him about Jonah’s wife, and how she’d died. Jonah killed and plundered, set fire to the world, but would never take a woman again as long as it was not his wife. Adam guessed that some things remained sacred, even after death.
A wall of warmth hit Adam as he stepped inside the cabin. The room was stuffy from the heat of the fire and men, and he could already feel drops of sweat bead on his forehead. The men paid him no mind, their chatter loud and obnoxious where they huddled together over bowls of food.
His stomach growled at the sighed, and he quickly served himself a bowl of brown mush simmering away over the flames. Looking down at his bowl, Adam knew he’d kill for something else to eat, something that wasn’t this fucking diarrhea-looking slop.
Looking over at the men where they sat, Adam mulled it over and shook his head He wasn’t in the mood for whatever ‘jokes’ they had for him today. Quietly, he grabbed another bowl of brown and walked down the hall. Curiosity grabbed a hold of him when he passed the door where Jonah kept the girl locked away. The two bowls shook in his hands as he pressed his ear to the door as he held his breath, listening.
He heard a muffled voice, deep, Jonah’s. Adam couldn’t catch the words being spoken behind the door, but he never heard the girl reply. She hadn’t said a word since they dragged her away with them. She’d kicked and screamed, spat out words of ‘how they’d regret this’ and ‘how they’d soon be dead if they didn’t let her go,’ but the fight in her had died out quickly. Adam wished Jonah would put a bullet in her already. She’d shot Barkley– she needed to pay for it, he thought.
The room smelled sweetly of disease. Adam wanted to crack open the window, but Barkley had begged him not to the last time he’d attempted it. He crept closer to the bed where his friend was sleeping, his dark hair sticking wetly to his forehead from sweat.
The infection had taken him now, Adam thought as he sat the bowl on the bed side table. They should take the leg, but he knew they wouldn’t; Barkley was already dead. Adam shook his friend’s shoulder, but he wouldn’t wake, only mumbled words Adam couldn’t understand – the ramblings of fever dreams.
With a sigh, Adam sat down in the chair in the corner. He’d slept in the chair since they found the cabin, watching over Barkley. The guys had teased him about it, but he’d rather sit in a room stuffed in the rot of disease, than pretend to like any of the guys. He let his eyes wander over Barkley as he ate his food.
His friend was dying. His only friend soon to be dead. What would be the point anymore when he’s not there anymore?
He hated everyone else. The praise and promotion he’d expected from Jonah, would never come. Maybe he should just slip out in the night, go about the land himself, find someplace to settle, leave this all behind.
Adam scraped the bowl and sighed. It was a foolish thought. He knew Jonah would come after him. He didn’t tolerate deserters much. You either followed him or swallowed down a bullet.
He had no choice; it was scout duty for Adam.
The snow moaned with each step he took, and the sun failed to make sense. The trees had been eerily silent today, something different in the endless wilderness. Adam moved about his route, back and forth, back and forth. He couldn’t put his finger on it but all day, it was like he was being watched. He’d watched his six, gone off his usual path, went a little deeper than he used to, but Adam had seen nothing but white snow-covered trees.
He waded back the way he’d came as a nervousness ran through him, bubbling under his skin. His grip around his gun tightened and he couldn’t fight the urge to check it again. A heat flushed his cheeks when he saw it was still loaded and ready, just like it had been ten minutes ago.
He was losing it.
Shaking his head, Adam tried to keep himself steady with calming breaths.
In… One… Two… Three… Out… One… Two… Three.
Over him he heard a branch snap, and his heart stopped. His arms worked on instinct, aiming his gun at the sky. An owl flew overhead, cooing in the silence of the forest, and Adam’s hands fell to his side.
A small breathy laugh escaped him. What was wrong with him today?
He continued on his path, kicking snow with each step. The snow had soaked through the cuffs of his jeans, but he’d stopped caring long ago. Then the wind moved, it cut right through him, making the trees rustle like living things. Adam looked up again, catching a glimpse of the sun through the trees as the world slowly darkened around him.
Then, a warm hand clamped over his mouth. He had no time to react before he felt the barrel of a gun against his back.
“Drop the gun,” a gruff voice ordered in his ear, full of authority.
When Adam didn’t move, the gun pressed harder into his back, the metal burning against his spine. If his mouth wasn’t covered he’d probably let out a whine.
“Drop. The. Gun,” the voice repeated, and Adam felt his gun slip from his fingers. He made no move to resist when the man grabbed his hands and twisted them behind his back.
He thought about Barkley, and Jonah, and the men. What did he have to fight for?
Around him the world darkened, it was like the forest came alive, the quietness blooming with sounds. A crow cawing somewhere, and then accompanied by another. The shadows had turned strange, small half-mooned shapes making patterns in the snow.
The man pushed him up against a tree as he tied his hands. The rope he used was thick– no, not rope, it couldn’t be. Adam twisted his hands, fingers dancing along the material. A belt. The man had used his belt to tie him up.
He could just run, wrangle his hands from the man’s grip and run. Adam looked past the tree, gauging his chances through the thick snow–
Bang.
Fuck.
Adam fell to his knees.
Motherfucker.
Blood bubbled in his ears. Blood stained the snow in crimson, pooling out of his left leg. The pain burned and Adam couldn’t figure out where he’d been shot, it was like it could’ve been anywhere in the growing red staining his jeans.
The man grabbed a hold of him, twisting him around and pressed him to the tree trunk. Adam cried out in pain, he couldn’t hold it back, the pulsing in his leg too strong – it beamed up his thigh. The back of his head slammed against the bark, and Adam was forced to look at him.
“Where is she?” the man asked in a calm voice.
Older. Brown hair. Brown eyes. A patchy beard with streaks of grey. He was larger than Adam. Maybe he’d been able to run from him, if he’d not been shot.
Sucking in a shaky breath, Adam tried to calm himself. “Who?” he tried and earned himself a sucker punch – his jaw aching and blood filling up his nostrils.
The man shook his head, “Wrong answer. Where is she?” The void in the man’s eyes made a chill run through Adam; or maybe it was the snow, or the blood pooling out of him.
The man’s grip in his hair tightened as he slammed Adam’s head into the tree bark. The world spun before him, dark as it twisted it into something strange.
Fuck, he was about to die.
“S-she’s alive,” he tried, his voice not louder than a whisper.
“Where?”
Adam sucked in a breath, tried to focus on keeping his eyes open. A clanging sound filled his ears before metal glinted in the strange light. He couldn’t hold back his scream when he felt the knife in his gut.
“Ah! Fuck! Fuck!” he cried, “The cabin– the cabin.”
Over him the man towered and his grip in his hair tightened even more.
“WHAT CABIN!?” he screamed.
Adam clung to life with both hands. The man before him turned into two, and he couldn’t figure out where it hurt the most.
“H-hunting cabin… a-a f-fifteen-minute walk t-that way.” Adam tilted his head in the direction, as much movement he could manage through the grip of his hair.
The man let go of him, and his head fell back against the bark. The world was suddenly brighter again – or was he walking towards the bright light he’d heard so much about?
“S-she’s alive– I-I swear,” he whispered.
“It’s okay…” the man nodded, his voice laced with pity as he stood before him, a giant shadow against the brightening day, arm raised and blade glinting in his hand. “I believe you.”

WELCOME TO ANOTHER HEADCANON SHITSHOW🗣️🔥
ARCANE CHARACTERS AND THEIR FAVOURITE VIDEO GAMES
this was requested by @beast-master-talks 🫶, so here it is pookie
Jinx
Splatoon & League of Legends
as mentioned in my first headcanon post, Jinx would be a Splatoon enjoyer
based on her weapons, the Heavy Splatling would be her go to weapon
if not, then the stringer or the dualies
she’s a Deep Cut enjoyer, 100%
enjoys the chaos of the game itself
would spam the taunts and squid party whenever she splats someone
plays with ekko
finds the salmons ADORABLE
is a toxic player…most of the time
and that also applies in League (i haven’t played it-)
would main herself
ultimate trash talker in both games
she just enjoys a game where she can absolutely demolish anyone
honourable mention: Borderlands
Viktor
i need him-
TLOZ: Twilight Princess & Minecraft
i think viktor enjoys open-world games rather than more action packed games
(i’m pretty sure his voice actor harry lloyd said something about zelda in a video)
Twilight Princess would be his favourite out of the other games mostly because of the general aesthetic and how it’s one of the more “darker” games of the franchise
THIS MAN WOULD BE FASCINATED BY THE TWILIGHT REALM, I MEAN-
the fact you can pick up cats is also a bonus
now on the calmer side, minecraft
it’s serves as a distraction
he has a pond of axolotls in honour of rio
has banned jinx from his server cus she blew up his wolf “on accident”
has lost his mind over the redstone
Vi
Street Fighter & The Last Of Us
Street Fighter is pretty much a classic in fighting games, so i think it’s something Vi would enjoy
has had a crush on at least ONE of the female fighters
would use ryu, a known character in the game
has played against Jinx, never doing it again cus they almost tore each other apart
NOW, IN THE CASE OF TLOU-
clickers and bloaters stress her the fuck out
died around 4 times in a row during the first encounter with a bloater
even though she could have weapons or even bricks at her disposal, most of the time she fights with her bare fists
died trying to speedrun the stealth sections because she didn’t have the patience
ellie and joel’s relationship hit a bit too close to home with her
i think she would take a break from the second game after joel’s death, no literally, it would leave her absolutely broken
Caitlyn
Life Is Strange & Fire Emblem
Caitlyn would enjoy Life is Strange due to its theme of moral choices
i think she’d be a bit thrown off by the more supernatural aspects of the game, but she’d enjoy nonetheless
she’s pretty much canonically a detective figure
so i think she’d be pretty satisfied if she manages to uncover something beforehand
has talked about the game to vi, in the same way a fnaf fan would explain the lore
NOW AS FOR FIRE EMBLEM (i know, i’m hilarious-)
the overall aesthetic of her design and the Kiramman house just gave me the game’s vibes, y’know?
the customization of the unit’s skills or classes would appeal to her
the lucina allegations from vi only worsened when she started playing
Ekko
Animal Crossing & BOTW
HE WOULD HAVE THE BEST ISLAND, I KNOW IT
has invited heimerdinger over, sometimes even asked for advice when it came to designing
if he was scammed by tom nook at some point, yeah, get ready for “the boy who shattered the console”
Goldie is his favourite villager (she’s mine too)
built a community similar to the Firelights
now for BOTW, Ekko would be absolutely mesmerised by every single location and sight (minus the guardians)
Rito Village reminds him of the hideout
did try to fight Ganon without the necessary equipment but lost
dyes everything green or brown
a little timebomb thingy, he would name one of his horses after Jinx/Powder, especially if it’s one of the blue horses
gets irritated when the stable won’t accept a peculiar horse (skeleton or lord of the mountain)
bonus: tony hawk pro skater (i don’t need to elaborate)
Mel
Sims 4 & Pokémon Scarlet
she would make the most beautiful houses
her sims would have absolutely LETHAL face cards
however, that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be absolute chaos from time to time
assassinating her sims would amuse her tbh
YOURE GONNA HAVE TO HEAR ME OUT FOR POKÉMON-
she chooses either fuecoco or quaxly as a starter
her team is full of the most GLAMOROUS pokémon i just know it
gardevoir would be on there for sure
has a shitload of coins and diamonds for evolution
Jayce
(he looks like a wet dog here-)
Detroit: Become Human & FIFA
the story of DBH would have him hooked
just the entire theme of technology would have him interested
but similar to himself, he would have good intentions yet make the most dogshit choices
he would try getting the “good” ending
similar to my headcanon of him quoting Captain Falcon, he would, unironically, say “28 STAB WOUNDS” out of the blue
Jayce is a fife, i just see it that way
despite the game being far more straight to the point, he would enjoy it casually
again, COCKY
if he’s playing with other people, then things will get heated
his team is Barça, it just is
bonus: he plays minecraft with Viktor
I THINK SOME ARE MORE ACCURATE THAN OTHERS BUT EITHER WAY I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS!

Fairytale Keeper's Final Assessment SE:
Ellis Twilight’s POV Chapter 1 ཐིཋྀ
Fan translation only. Not 100% accurate. Please expect grammatical errors. Cybird owns everything. Feel free to re-blog, but please do not post my translations elsewhere. Dividers: @/natimiles
What is happiness?
It’s like the twilight sky, which changes color as soon as it is burned into the eye.
You can't get the same thing again, even though it holds your heart forever and won't let go.
So tomorrow - I will show you more beautiful twilight.
The day after tomorrow and the day after that.
Then, eventually, when you are assured of the best happiness -
(Hmm…..ng…..)
Pale sunlight streamed in through the window and tickled my eyelids.
I open my eyes and stare at her sleeping face with her arms pillowed around me.
(Cute. Looks so comfy, like a little kid.)
Lately, I've been waking up to find Kate next to me more often.
We both have our own rooms, so sometimes we talk about sleeping separately.
However, when it comes time to say goodbye, we just can't leave.
(It's like we forget to leave.)
Kate: Mm……mmm…
(Ah, she woke up.)
Ellis: Good morning, Kate.
Kate: …..Ellis, good morning.
When I kiss Kate’s forehead she laughed like it tickled.
I, I really like it when Kate, who always lives for her life, becomes defenseless.
Ellis: Hey, Kate…..Are you happy now?
She already knows that this question of mine has a special meaning.
Kate: Yeah……I'm happy.
Ellis: How much?
Kate: ……I see.
Kate: I’m still extremely happy though…..
(Oh, she looks like she wants to kiss me.)
When I kissed her again on the lips that I kissed so much last night, Kate blinked her eyes.
Ellis: Would kissing make you happier?
Kate: How did you know what I wanted you to do?
Ellis: Because I love you.
Kate laughs ticklishly again, as I trap her in my arms.
As I hug Kate like a treasure, I think back to what Victor called me to talk about yesterday.
FLASHBACK
Victor: I'm at a loss, should I let her continue as a fairytale keeper? Or-
Victor: That's why as a Crown member, I want to hear your opinions.
Victor: So, here this is for you. This is the fairytale keeper continuation agreement.
Ellis: …………
Victor: Ellis?
Ellis: Ah, no….
Ellis: I completely forgot that there was a way to quit being a fairy tale teacher.
But that was my mistake, and Kate was only supposed to be a fairytale keeper for a limited time limit.
So this is, an agreement to decide whether to she can continue as a fairytale keeper or to say goodbye.
Ellis: You want me to spend the day with Kate, and sign this if I think she should continue as fairytale keeper.
Ellis: If I think she shouldn’t continue as fairytale keeper then don’t sign it.
It seems like I can decide on my own, but I don't want to do that.
Because Kate’s feelings are more important than anything else.
(But...I never want to let you go.)
FLASHBACK ENDS
Kate can go anywhere.
That's why I don't want you to go anywhere.
(I couldn't get my thoughts together so I couldn't tell you, but I have to tell you today.)
Ellis: Kate.
— A stomach growled. Not mine, but Kate’s.
Kate: Ah, that....
Ellis: Hehe, so cute. Your stomach sounds are cute too.
Kate: ……Don't make fun of me.
Ellis: I'm not making fun, I really meant it.
Ellis: Kate, the weather is nice today, so let's have brunch outside.
Ellis: Also, there's something I want to talk to you about.
Kate: ...This is my agreement to continue as a fairytale keeper.
When I was full, I told Kate everything.
(Victor said it was a secret, so I'll have to apologize later.)
Then, Kate looked at me with an unwavering expression.
Kate: Ellis, you will stay at Crown forever, right?
Kate: Then I only have one choice…
Ellis: Wait a minute, Kate.
Kate: Ellis?
Ellis: I thought you would say that. Thank you, Kate.
Ellis: Besides, as long as I sign it, everything will have a happy ending.
Ellis: But I want you to choose.
Kate: Me, choose?
Ellis: Remember, you became a fairytale keeper by getting caught up in this.
FLASHBACK
It was the night of usual mission, just after the entirety of Crown had taken care of a certain target, Kate got lost in the
darkness.
William: What’s this? Aren’t you the Robin I met earlier today?
Kate: Ah…..oh……what?
FLASHBACK ENDS
Ellis: So now I want you to choose for yourself.
It's true that I want to value Kate’s feelings.
However, I have an ulterior motive.
(This will be the final decision, so I want Kate to choose me. Crown and I are best.)
(Being here is the happiest thing for you.)
Kate: All right Ellis, if that's the way you want it.
Ellis: I was wondering how I could make it easier for you to choose.
I suggested that Kate and I spend a day together for the final assessment.
During the day, we’ll go about Crown’s daily routine as usual.
Then from sunset until morning, Kate will live her daily life like she before meeting Crown.
Ellis: I thought it would make it easier to compare the two different lifestyles.
Kate: …..Definitely. It’s a good idea.
Ellis: Yay, I was praised. When should we start?
Kate: I want to prepare mentally, so what about starting tomorrow?
Ellis: Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Let’s start tomorrow.
(Kate, are you worried?)
I won't let go of you Kate, I won't.
(But maybe I'm just a little worried too.)
I hugged Kate's body and the tips of our noses touched.
Ellis: Tomorrow is the time to think about the future. For now, just think about me.
Kate: Ellis….mm..
And the next day, Kate and I's final fairytale assessment began.
Kate: It’s such nice weather! The weather is perfect, Ellis.
We spread out a picnic blanket and Kate stretches out on it.
(Kate is even more happy and cute when the weather is nice.)
(Ah, that's right.)
Ellis: Kate, can you close your eyes for a moment?

she could tell before you even approached home that was jackson. she could tell by the way your words of input slowly died down within the last day and how you opted to simply nodding your head every now and again though you knew it would not suffice.
ellie williams knew you better than you did yourself, she knew your quirks like they were her own, she spent so much time studying you that if she had to take an exam on it, she'd pass with flying colors. she knew when you got overstimulated. she knew exactly how it went because every single time was the same. at first it was the draw backs, the way you excluded yourself from an important conversation or how you opted to only speaking when spoken to, when words were forced out of you.
ellie did her best to support you then, she'd get the attention off you, she'd bring up a point you had mumbled underneath your breath only modifying it in the slightest and when everyone would thank her for such a good idea, she always pointed the attention back on you, the good kind. her heart ached when you'd smile though it didnt quite reach your eyes.
when the drawbacks became still too much, you had no choice but to draw back from ellie too, worrying you may snap. overstimulation wasn't always wet tears and sulking, it often resulted in your face contorted into an angry frown and when someone said something a little too harsh, something you'd let off on a normal day, you had your mouth open and something crude falling from your lips.
you were always a quiet girl, you didn't speak much when you were angry though it sometimes showed on your face. don't get me wrong, you loved chatting away to Jesse, Dina, even Tommy, you had this thing where your mouth wouldn't stop moving the minute you became excited about something. but by no means had you ever said something rude to someone, even when they were the ones to start it. ellie always scolded you for this, claiming they'd keep doing it again until you said something but you couldn't help but shrug, claiming that you didn't wish to hurt anyones feelings, even if they had hurt yours.
but it was times like this, when everything had become too much that you couldn't seem to care. the older men stomped on you for being small, young, someone so fragile that you surely couldn't help yourself let alone them. ellie felt pride bubble in her when you stuck up for yourself, your voice raising causing their eyes to widen, glances thrown at one another. they hadn't expected you to blow up, how could they when you were as fragile as a flower.
ellies pride could only simmer down when she realised why you were yelling. it wasnt because you were angry with them, though you had every right to be, you were angry with everything around you, the overstimulation got to you and you couldnt help the ansty bursts. while she would have praised you for sticking up for yourself, claiming she was so very proud she could only feel pitiful when you stomped your feet away from them all, tears burning the edges of your eyes. she knew that look too well. guilt.
ellie never confronted you about this during the admiss of overstimulation, she knew it was simply one more thing you couldn't handle. so, she let you be because no matter what, she'd be here at the very end, when you were ready. so she let you slump against her arm that night, allowed you to bask in whatever affection you could get. she brought her hand uo to pet your head, only stopping when she saw the tears forming. she'd mumbled out something like "oh, princess." too much sympathy in her voice to ignore. she plastered a chaste kiss onto the crown of your head and let you silently fall asleep, your soft skin sitting on the scratchy fabric of her jacket. she didn't mind when you needed her comforting silence, she always offered it up to you without so much as a protest. she knew you needed sleep if you were going to make it back to jackson that next day.
turns out she was right. she could tell as bad as you were now, the night of her comfort had soothed you so very slightly, but that meant a lot, nontheless. the ride home you were silent but you no longer looked angry. tired, upset, yes, but not angry. ellie was happy with this. of course, she never wished to see her girl upset but it was indefinitely better than angry because as fragile and sweet as you were, when you were angry you couldn't stop your mouth, something was bound to fall out even if it wasn't necessarily mean, just enough to have guilt hanging over your shoulders.
the mission was hard, even for her, she couldn't imagine how tired her sweet angel was. you shared a horse, ellie in the front. your cheek was lazily pressed against her back, hands softly placed around her waist so you didn't fall off. she couldn't wait to welcome the jackson gates with open arms, she couldn't wait to have you in bed, resting, it was well deserved. you put your heart and soul into missions, she knew this, everyone did, sometimes it simply took too much out of you, however, and this was normal, of course but ellie never wished to see you upset even if it wasn't something she could help.
the chatter amongst the others was louder than before, much more laughter filling the air now that everyone had relaxed, everything went swimingly, everyone happy, they were beyond exited to go home, to rest. of course it wasn't their fault they were so happy but ellie wished nothing more than to shove a hand on their mouths and tell them to "shut the fuck up" because you were tired and the loud noises could only add to the overstimulation.
the gates neared faster than any of them could have imagined, any of them other than ellie, who felt the ride home was excruciatingly long. the gates opened, people were met with the biggest of grins, the brightest of laughs, the adoration and pure awe of their bravery, how they had risked anything for their town again and again and yet the only thing ellie could focus on was your face. as always, maria shooed everyone away in seconds, telling them they stunk of something absurd that they were in desperate need of a shower which was merely a decoy, of course. she did this so the tired beings could simply go home, shower if they wished and if not then so be it, rest as best they could instead of being swarmed by doting smiles, as sweet as they were, they didn't seem so understanding when running on how much sleep they had been running on.
home. something you had been in desperate need of, not an all-out giggling session with dina or a bear hug given by your absolute favourite hugger jesse, you needed home, with ellie. you were the first to reach your shared home, of course with your eagerness causing you to all but rush into the house, ellie hot on your heels but unfortunately not fast enough as you had been. she ignored the way the snow annoyingly crunched underneath her feet, she ignored the smell of her hoodie and the way her hair was falling out of her seemingly perfect half up half down do. she ignored everything so she could rush into the house right after you only with calm, gentle footsteps. careful not to upset you further.
ellie was anything but soft, but with you, she was anything other than so. you were an angel, a princess in desperate need of worshiping, she'd offer everything she could and serve it to you on a golden platter. but she knew better, you'd simply swat the gold away to reach her own face. you were like that. you didn't care for any riches or gold, only for the love and adoration of one girl and one girl alone. ellie fucking williams.
she reached the bedroom after you did, kicking her boots off in the hallway before she entered. she wasn't shocked to see you sitting on the bed already, your shoes neatly put beside one another at the foot of the bed, your knees up to your chest and your head laying on top of it, wishing on everything for the nagging pain in your head to subside. "hey, baby, it's okay. you're home." home. it did little to ease your nerves for you knew you were home already, before you had entered the building. you were home whenever you were with ellie but sometimes even she couldn't hide you away from the evil thoughts gracing your mind. "i've got you." so gently did she take your arms in her own. her lips gently kissed your neck, she didn't squeeze you like jesse did when he was excited, she took you in her arms and held you, not tight, gently and softly, a warm and homely place like no other. you couldn't hold it in anymore, not with her tender touch. you moved swiftly, hugging her back only tighter than before, your head burried into the crook of her neck. stressed hiccups leaving your lips. "c'mon baby, talk to me." with the softest voice she could muster.
she hated to see you cry, hated to hear you cry, anything that involved your small tears dripping down your cheeks had her gut twisting in a horrid way. "i tried, i really tried." was all you could pant into her neck, all but sobbing straight onto her cotton hoodie.
"and you did amazing, pretty girl." she knew it would help even if it was in the littlest way. " 'm so proud of you for being a good girl the whole time." but contrary to her words, you felt anything but a 'good girl'.
you sniffled heavily, shaking your head in her embrace. you made a noise of disagreement. "no- i yelled at them and i didn't mean to- i didn't wanna be mean." guilt weighing you down even if you couldn't put it into the words you wished you could.
you heard a tut from your girlfriend as her hands soothed your waist. "if you didn't say anything, i would've." she spoke tenderly, her lips coming to gently place against the crown of your hair. "when you think about it, you did them a favour, imagine i got to them, huh?!" with a small laugh she pulled away, wanting nothing more than to see your pretty face. "the sorry suckers would've been all the way in canada by now!" her lighthearted voice speaking as if you were a child but you didn't protest, quite the opposite actually, you felt merely soothed by it. "baby, you did the right thing, okay?"
you sniffled yet nodded, despite the fact you didn't believe her. you didn't do the right thing, how could yelling ever be the right thing? you wanted so badly to put your guilt into words but you couldn't, it simply wasn't possible. "i hate feeling like this." you opted for, a break in your voice as you mumbled it out.
overstimulation. you hated overtimulation. "i know, baby but you handled it so well, didn't you?" practically gushing over you as she pulled you closer to her further, you were practically sitting on her lap, your feet draped over the other side of her legs. "you were so brave, my brave girl." there was something about the fearless, powerful, courageous and valiant ellie williams calling you brave, nevertheless her brave girl that could only make your heart swoon. "c'mon why don't we get cleaned up?"
and that was exactly what you did. you took turns showering, ellie being first and then you. you let the hot water hit your back, admittedly, too hot to be a normal shower. you knew that if ellie had saw you, had felt the temperature of the water, she surely would have had something to say, something to scold you about but ellie wasn't here now and you needed this. you needed the reminder that you were here, in your bathroom, without anyone else. you needed the reminder that you were home, that all the evil thoughts could leave because there was nothing wrong. ellie was outside the bathroom, picking a movie, and you were showering in the comfort of your own bathroom, you were safe.
ellie had picked out your clothes, as she usually did. sometimes, you swore she thought you were a doll, one that she could dress, one she did the hair of, picked out what you ate, drank, one she could pick apart and get to know every square inch of. and if you were being honest with both her and yourself, you adored it more than anything in the entire world. you slipped your white long sleeved top over your head, ignoring the way it became very slightly see through due to the droplets of your hair, then slipping on one of ellie's pairs of boxers. you assumed that she thought it served well enough as a pants for she hadn't left anything else out for you to wear.
you didn't mind, however, there was something about the way your slightly pink skin, still hot from the shower, the way your damp hair sat at your back and your smooth skin was on show that seemed so homely. you were comfortable here. you didn't have to worry for how ellie would react to your bare legs or your completely clean of make up face. ellie was like that, she made you feel so... sheltered, warm.
when you exited you and ellie's shared bathroom, your eyes immediately flickered to your girlfriend, who was sat atop the large bed, fiddling with the projector. she looked up upon hearing your entrance. "hey, sweet girl." a goofy grin instantly falling on her lips. "nice shower?"
you nodded your sleepy head as you took a seat on the bed next to your girlfriend. her hair had almost completely dried and you just now realised how unfair it was that she got to be in sweatpants and you didn't, a black tee falling across her figure. "which one did you pick?" you questioned as you let your head fall on the back of her shoulder, cheek squishing against her top to which she paid no mind to.
"the swan princess." holding up a rather girly dvd packet. when she turned to look at you, she physically held in a coo at your figure, all cosy against her.
you had to stop the small giggle leaving your lips. "you hate that movie." it was true. almost every time you watched the cartoon, she had something to say about derek's 'god awful haircut' or the fact that jean bob was the only good part of the entire movie, always stating that odette seemed rather suspicious, you always shrugged her off, of course.
she looked at your face, skin slightly damp from your shower, cheeks flush and pink. she couldn't stop herself from leaning forward and pressing a kiss against your lips. "yeah but it's your favourite." she whispered, leaning back only slightly so that when her lips moved, they slightly brushed against your own.
your smile widened if it were even possible. "i love you, els." the nickname falling from your lips so perfectly, ellie wished she could frame this moment into her mind forever.
"i love you so much more, pretty girl." leaning in closer, if possible.
your eyes glanced from her lips up to her eyes. "liar." a small giggle falling past your lips until hers were on yours once more. this kiss lasted longer than her usual peck, it was passionate, one that had your face falling backwards as she practically captured your lips as her own. she kissed you hard, though her hands kept at her sides, not moving for the pure bliss of the kiss was well enough.
she pulled away for breath, your lips only chased hers for a second before you too leaned back for air. she grinned, looking into your eyes as if they were made of every star in the galaxy and you were her favourite constellation. how did she get so lucky? and she didn't mean it in the way many teens did, when they posted a picture of their girlfriend in full makeup, in a dress, stating they were the luckiest person on earth. no. ellie was truly lucky. beyond so. she would love you in any clothes, any light, any face, any body, and yet in front of her was the most unearthly ethereal girl she had ever laid eyes on. you were enchanting. "let's get this movie over with, yeah?" though she didn't truly hate the movie, despite her words. a massive grin splayed on her lips as she finally pulled away. she didn't fear you would leave, she didn't fear you would disappear and turn to dust. for the first time in her life, the 'fearless' girl wasn't scared. you were here. you weren't letting go. it was you and her until the very end, she wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. so she clicked on the start to the movie and laid back with peace playing about in her mind because she was here, with you, her angel, and that was how it would stay until all the stars in the galaxy burnt out and every constellation turned to a black dust.
the night passed, as did the movie. ellie found herself grinning at the way you giggled at something speed had said, something you heard at least a thousand times and still found it funny. she couldn't help but smile down at you in so much adoration as your finger tips traced her tattoo on her arm. she couldn't help but melt into your touch as you cuddled against her, skin so soft and warm.
the end credits rolled on faster than she had wished and yet she simply pushed her foot out to snap the 'stop' button on the projector, not bothering to move from her place on the bed with you. your eyes were closed, lashes hitting gently against your cheeks as you had wrapped yourself in her arm, cuddled as close as humanly possible. no matter how overwhelmed you could get, you always went back to her. it spoke so many words an action shouldn't have been able to do. "goodnight, princess." a kiss once again against the crown of your head.
when she laid down into the blankets further, you moved yourself so you had cuddled her further, closer, relaxed breaths falling from your lips. "g'night." it was soft, gentle and caused her brows to furrow. she turned to peer at your face. you were fast asleep and yet managed to mumble out a barely coherent word.
it was safe to say that night that ellie williams went to sleep with the gentlest and largest of simpers on her face known to man-kind.

Jude Jazza & Ellis Twilight — Villains Want to Embarrass Little Robin Story Event
Premium End

Both English and Japanese are not my mother tongue languages, please keep in mind that there will be mistakes and added words for my own preferences. After washing my body and changing into my night dress, I sank into the bed in my room and suddenly felt tired.
(Tomorrow, I'll have to pull myself together... I'll have to do my best...)
While I was sorting out tomorrow's schedule in my head, my eyelids got heavier and heavier—, and I fell asleep.
—I woke up in the middle of the night when I noticed the faint sound of the door opening.
(That...... What time is it now?—)
(—Wait a minute. This is Her Majesty's bedroom, who the hell is in here at this hour?)
My spine trembles. I'm shaking. Jude and Ellis should be resting in a separate room.
(No way, is it really Mr. Abel?)
(But "only people inside the palace have the key")
(Mr. Abel stole the key? Or maybe the mastermind behind the assassination plan is someone inside the palace—?)
Through the curtain of the canopy, the silhouette of a person approaches.
(It can't be helped if I just deduced here! What should I do... get out of the other side of the bed?)
(If I could get out of the room without being seen and call Mr. Jude and Ellis,)
(I should be able to complete the mission.)
(Honestly, I don't feel like I can do it, but— I have no choice but to do it)
Holding my pillow as a shield, I gently placed my hand on the canopy curtain on the other side, at that moment.
A figure raises an arm holding something sharp—,
Man’s voice: “—What the!?”
The figure crumpled to the floor after receiving a heavy blow to the side of the head.
(Hey, what..... What happened......)
I'm afraid to open the canopy curtain and look outside.
Mr. Jude was stomping on a man dressed as a guard.
Jude: "I can't believe you’re screaming in Her Majesty's room in the middle of the night."
Jude: "Isn't that disrespectful? I don't know.”
A man dressed as a guard: "Well.... You are one of Her Majesty's guards.”
Jude: "So you're the secretary of the Glasses Minister?"
Jude: "What are you trying to do with such a dangerous thing?"
A man dressed as a guard: “Damn it. ....I'm gonna kill you too...Nn”
The guard man crawled out from under Mr. Jude's feet and raised his knife again.
A man dressed as a guard: "This is a crime committed by the U.S. ambassador....... I'm in trouble if it doesn't happen like that."
Ellis: "Are you trying to frame it...?"
A man dressed as a guard: “Wha!?”
A hand stretched out from behind twisted the wrist that the man raised again.
Ellis: ".....No, that kind of thing. I don't think anyone will be happy."
A man dressed as a guard: “You, It— hurts.”
Mr. Jude's hand roughly grabbed his mouth and sealed it as he tried to complain of pain.
His nose and mouth are blocked and I can hear a painful voice.
Jude: "If you don't keep quiet, the “Queen” will wake up."
Ellis: "...The Queen's aide wants to ask you something."
Ellis puts one arm around the man's neck and tightens it even more.
Jude: "You’re going to faint from lack of oxygen, or I'll let you sleep in peace, which one? I’ll let you choose."
A man dressed as a guard: "Hmm, hmm!!"
Ellis: "It's rare for Jude to let you choose. You'd better answer as soon as possible."
A man dressed as a guard: "Ngu... O..."
Jude: "Uh? What's that? I can't hear you.”
A man dressed as a guard: “Gu....Nn, ugh….., …….”
When the man's whole body fell apart, Mr. Jude let go of his hand as if throwing out the filth.
Ellis caught him in good timing, tied him up with a rope, dragged him to the corner of the room, and rolled him over.
(......Wow, that's great..... He knows what he’s doing.)
Once again, you are stuck in the dark world, and see that they are two terrifying people to make enemies with...
Jude: “….Hm?”
Kate: “Uwha!”
The curtains were unreservedly opened, and I almost fell off the bed while holding my pillow.
Jude: "It's a nasty queen who has a hobby of distributing."
Ellis: "...It was scary, isn't it? Miss Kate, it's okay now."
An agitated sneer and a gentle smile. I am again confronted with conflicting smiles, but this time my facial muscles are not confused, but relaxed.
Kate: "Both of you..... Thank you very much."
Kate: "But...how did you know?”
Ellis: "Your crown smelled sweet.”
Kate: “Eh…..?”
Jude: “The nectar that caused the bird to run amok was smeared on the crown.”
Kate: "On the crown...?"
Ellis: “So, Jude and I looked into who might have approached the crown before the audience.”
Jude: “The secretary of the minister with the glasses was the last one who approached it, so I kept an eye on the minister and sure enough, there it is."
Jude: “Originally, he was an extremist in the military and a warmonger and a sloppy politician, and he had the motive to say that he would make money by raising a jerk.”
(That kind of thing...)
Kate: "He rebelled against Her Majesty, and on top of that he tried to frame such a good-looking ambassador as a criminal...that's the worst."
When I muttered what I thought, Mr. Jude raised his eyebrow in amusement.
Jude: "Ha, that's surprising. ......As if saying “Don't do it like that” is easy enough.”
Kate: "......He’s alive, isn’t he?”
Ellis: "Yeah, of course. Victor told me not to kill him because he has something to ask."
Kate: "He was trying to take someone's life...”
Kate: “Both the secretary who attacked me and the minister behind it should be prepared for some pain.”
Kate: "......I don't sympathise."
Jude & Ellis : “………”
(At least, Mr. Jude and Ellis know that they will be retaliated in the same way...it looks like they are working with this in mind.)
I don't think it's a good thing, but I'm not going to assume it's a bad thing either.
That was my frank thought after working with them on several missions.
Jude: "Ha, how did you start saying that?"
Ellis: "Shall I go and hurt him more? How much do you want me to abuse him?"
Kate: "You don't have to do it any more...!”
Ellis: “Yeah…..?”
When I hurriedly stopped him, Ellis put away the knife with a small bow of his head.
(These two people are both quite troublesome.)
(But I can absolutely trust you... being by your side might be the strongest)
Jude: "Hah..... I'm really tired today because the princess is unreliable."
Mr. Jude sat down on the bed and sprawled himself up.
Jude: "It's almost morning. I gave almost a whole night to that weirdo assistant.”
He was about to close his eyes, so I opened my mouth in a hurry.
Kate: "Um, I'm sorry, here is my bed.”
Jude: “Ah? It's not yours, it's Her Majesty's."
Ellis: "Oh, Jude is not fair."
Ellis also turned to the other side and lay down with Mr. Jude sandwiching me.
Ellis: "I think I'll take a nap here too."
Kate: “Eh, Ellis…..?”
Ellis: “Miss Kate, can we sleep together?”
Kate: "Sleep, you mean......, eh...eh!?"
(Together, .......With these two people!?)
Jude: "It's so noisy."
Ellis: "Here, over here."
Kate: "Wha......!?"
I collapsed onto the bed with my arms pulled from both sides.
No matter how wide Her Majesty's bed is, when two adult men and I lie down, it's narrow.
(S-So close...)
There was no way Mr. Jude would open up space for me, and Ellis was close enough to say that he wanted to stick together with me.
I was sandwiched between the two bodies regardless, and my shoulders, arms, and legs were in close contact.
Jude: "You body temperature is high... Are you a child even here?”
Ellis: "It feels so warm and nice. .....Hey, can't I hug you?"
Kate: "It's no good...!"
No matter which way I look, I feel strange, so I answered while looking straight up.
Jude: “Fuha, what are you blushing for? You dirty girl."
Mr. Jude sits on his shoulders next to me and looks down at me with a smirk on his face.
Kate: "Isn't it disrespectful to sneak into someone's bed without permission?"
Jude: "Isn't it disgusting? I don't know who it is, the villain who does such a thing."
Ellis: “Do you want to do something naughty? It’s okay, if you want to.”
Kate: “Huh….uh, …..?”
Ellis lays down next to me, looks straight at me, and suggests the most outrageous thing.
Ellis: “Oh, would you rather do with Jude? Or me, or both?"
Jude: "Hey, I'm getting involved without permission."
Jude: “If you want to do it, do it as you like. I'll just sit here and watch. You like that kind of thing, don't you?”
Ellis: "Really? Then will you?"
They whisper to me from both sides as they please, and my face starts to twitch more and more.
Kate: "Could you please get off the bed and sleep in your own room..."
Ellis: "......But I'm worried if you're alone, Miss Kate."
Kate: “Uh…..”
Jude: "This bed is so comfortable, I refuse."
Kate: “….Jesus, I’m done…..!”
With a tired head, a pure conscience and arrogant selfishness thrust at me—
—I stopped thinking.
Kate: "It's fine as it is...! Good night!"
I pulled the sheet up to my face and managed to keep them out of sight.
Jude: "Fuha, what's with that sleeping style?"
Ellis: “You’re hiding. I miss you.”
Both of them started to fall asleep after a few minutes without knowing what others thought....
While being wrapped in the gentle sound, warm body temperature, and the sweet scent of the two people, I also fell asleep before I knew it.
…
A few days later. Without making it public that there was an assassination, the U.S. ambassador left the palace with the same sunny smile he had on his face when he arrived.
To my horror, the minister with glasses disappeared from his seat without my knowledge. And then—
Ellis: "Ah, here we come. Miss Kate, this way."
Kate: "...Thank you for waiting."
Jude: "Are you more nervous than the mission?"
Today is the day we decided to grant each other's "requests" in celebration of completing our mission without our identities being revealed.
(The partners are Mr. Jude and Ellis. The promises we exchanged must be kept.)
It's reassuring to have these people as allies, but I've just learned that turning them into enemies can be troublesome.
I gulped and swallowed my spit, the two smiled their very best smiles.
Ellis: "I'm looking forward to it... Well then, Miss Kate."
Jude: "Do you want me to fulfil your “wish”?"

TLOU WORLD — 2023
TEN MILES WEST OF BOSTON – DUSK
You trek your way into the forest, you hear your footsteps squishing through the mud and dirt, and the pounding of your breath. The sun is beginning to set, dusk then brings you moonlight, a time to reflect on the day that has past and look forward to the day that will be refreshed by the glow of the sun. It is the time when the birds sing farewell till the stars call them to sleep under the wings. Each color intensifies in beautiful solemnity, uniting in the darkness.
No one spoke for the entirety of the hike, the silence carries your melancholy, yet it is a permanent friend of your subconsciousness. The deafness is only broken by ragged breaths and the beating of human hearts. Joel comes to a stop, his back facing you and Ellie as he speaks, “We’ll camp here for the night. I’ll take watch.”
You look to Ellie who merely shrugs, the two of you say nothing and begin to set up camp on the forest floor. You hear the rushing water of a river nearby and realize where you’ve ended up. Placing your backpack on the floor, you raise your arms and stretch to the sky, undoing the painful knots in your back and neck. You let out a sigh of relief and prepare for the inevitable. Joel calls out your name and you turn to face him, ready to take on the brunt of his pain and rage.
His eyebrows lower slightly, and the tone of his voice goes down a pitch, “You and I need to talk.” You take an uneasy breath and nod in agreement despite the sweat coating both palms. He takes a step closer to you and asks, “Did you know?” he raises his voice a little, “Did you know about Tess?” You look down in shame and whisper, “Yes.”
It takes everything he has to keep his control, jaw clenched and narrowed eyes, “Why?” he says. A question so simple, a three-letter word holding so much weight, and so much anger towards you. “Why didn’t you tell me?” You swallow and avoid responding, choosing silence over an argument. He scoffs and shakes his head, and you cross your arms across your chest. The more he fumed, the smaller you made herself.
You shift your weight from one foot to the other, and only look up to see his broad shoulders and back facing you, he mumbles with a quiet rage, “I’m gonna go check the area and make sure it’s safe and that there aren’t any infected nearby.”
“This ain’ gonna work if you keep hidin’ secrets from me Hummin’ bird.” He turns and walks away, disappearing into the woods. “Well, that was dramatic.” You turn to find Ellie sitting comfortably, back resting against the pine tree in a crisscross position, you open your mouth to ask if she was okay but decided against it. Instead, you nod, “Yeah. I’m, um, sorry about that.” Ellie only shrugs, “He must’ve loved her or something.” Your gaze softens as you whisper into the cool navy twilight, “Or something.”
YOUR ORIGINAL OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE — JANUARY 2023, NOON
WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY, FUNDAMENTAL QUANTUM PHYSICS LAB
The sleeves of your white lab coat itch your arms as you focused on typing up your report. The clacking sound of your keyboard could be heard from around the lab as you typed. You were invited to assist in a study focusing on quantum mechanics and theory. The lab wasn’t as busy today, most of them had decided to join the conference that was being held at Harvard, busy networking and connecting with possible investors or fellow researchers.
It was only you and Adam that was left in the lab, his excuse was he would rather put acid in his eyes than shake hands and give fake niceties. He’s nearby testing his new hypothesis, and decides to make conversation with you, “If we manage to prove this, then it is possible, somewhere in the many worlds, a pandemic happened earlier in a different universe.” You roll your eyes in amusement, “Yeah, I guess so.” You’re in thought for a moment before asking, “Do you think humanity won? Like, they overcame it?” He hums, “Maybe. Or maybe they lost.” You snort and throw a careless joke, “Everyone would blame our shitty government and us, the scientists. How ignorant must you be for it to happen twice?”
“Well, all disaster movies start with a scientist being ignored.” He says matter-of-factly, and you give no response, and you continue typing up your report. Silently hoping that if it were true, that humanity would still have hope, small but just enough to let the shine through, and believe that they haven’t lost yet. You look at the time and log out of your work computer, packing up your things, and asking Adam if he would like to join you for lunch he politely declines, so you bid him farewell as you head out the doors to step on the grey pavement of the campus and make your way to a nearby restaurant. It’s a beautiful day, you think to yourself, clear blue skies and a cool breeze that caresses your skin. You take notice of the blue butterfly fluttering its wings and flying right past you, you smile as it leaves an afterimage of change.
TLOU WORLD — 2023
TEN MILES WEST OF BOSTON — CIVIL TWILIGHT DAWN
You wake up with a deep inhale, your eyes struggle to open, and try to understand where you were. Tired from the dream, well, a memory that replayed like a cassette tape on a player that pressed rewind. You blink a couple of times before rubbing your eyes awake and retrace your steps in your mind as you recall what happened last night, only to remember giving Ellie your jacket and waiting up for Joel to come back from scouting the area for any signs of danger.
You sit up a little straighter and crack the aching parts of your neck, you look next to yourself and see Ellie lightly snoring up against a tree, still asleep. You look at the familiar jacket draped over your body that had kept you warm during the cold night. Joel must’ve placed it on top of you when he found you barely awake and functioning.
You can’t help but smile and feel your heart flutter at the thought of him taking care of you. You feel the muscles of your cheeks tighten as you try to hide away your smile and hoist yourself up quietly, not wanting to disturb Ellie’s slumber. Letting Joel’s jacket drape off of your shoulders, you use your hands to hold the collar, creating a cape that drapes behind you.
You head towards the sound of the stream, it burbles as it travels along its bed, bubbling over rocks and branches. It was a delicate duck-egg blue, like the delicate sweep of a painter's brush. It snuck and snuck its way past all impediments, even the river's stones. Twigs spun across its murmuring surface, small messengers from the mountain trees that had brought them there. The creek rushed across the riverbed's pebbles. It sounded like a starling flock's airy, silky spin.
In the background, the mountains stood silently, a sullen presence of sky-punching glory. Snow brooches adorned their lofty peaks, which were encircled in angel-white wreaths. A weeping torrent cascaded down the granite wall. It appeared to be a silk-blue slide pouring down the mountain. It looked to be bound in silver as it carried its burden of ice crystals. It emitted a distant thrumming sound, similar to the constant rumble of a drum roll. It glowed brightly as it fed the riverbed, the forest's lifeblood. It was a breathtaking sight.
Your gaze turns to fine Joel’s figure kneeling, hunched over, and quietly picking stones from the river’s edge. You watch from a distance as he silently stacks a pile of stones to create a cairn, a memorial for Tess. You make sure your footsteps can be heard as you approach him, but he gave no acknowledgment as you decide to sit atop a large rock. It takes a while before he looks at you, and finds you staring right through him with sorrowful eyes.
You let out a huff of air before speaking in a neutral tone, “I don’t mean to keep secrets from you. If I had come here a day before the pandemic, a day before your birthday, I would have done everything to make sure this never happened.” You paused for a moment then continued, “You asked me why I didn’t tell you. I didn’t tell you because I thought I could do it on my own. I’ve been doing this for my whole life, keeping the peace and fixing things by myself, and I got it right every time. And the one time I get it wrong it cost someone’s life.”
You feel your voice quiver as you spoke, eyes darting to look past him, afraid of the rage and grief he feels, “Someone you loved is gone. I’m sorry, Joel. But God, I know that will never be enough and no amount of apologies will bring her back. I had a chance and I fucked up. If I could… If I could press rewind and trade her life for mine I would if that would make it any better for you.”
“No.” Joel states and your eyebrows furrow in confusion, and slowly bring your eyes to look at him, “No?” And he shakes his head and picks up another rock as he says, “I accept your apology, but stop doin’ that.” You tilt your head quizzically, “Don’t do what?” He gruffly replies, “Minimize your life as if it doesn’t matter. As if it ain’t just as important.” She felt her breathing pause and peered intently at him before trying to argue, “But–” He shuts her down before she could go on, “Stop it, as you said, no amount of apologizin’ is gonna bring her back. She’s gone. I made a promise to her that I’m plannin’ on keepin’, you gonna help me or not?”
That throws you off balance, you expected him to lash out, maybe throwing a rock or two at you, not this. Slowly you nod, “Yes. Yes, I will.” Joel looks and searches for any form of malice or lies and finds none. He simply stretches his arm to you, the rock he previously took from the river’s edge, and holds it out to you like an olive branch. You slide off the rock you were sitting on and take the rock from his hand, crouching down and quietly placing it on top of the cairn.
You stare at the pile of rocks for a moment, quiet in thought, but then Joel says your name in a whisper that wouldn’t even fog the glass, you raise your eyes to look at him as he asks, “Was she, in your world, did she, um, already um…” And you already know what he’s wondering before he tries and say the words, so you save him the trouble of continuing, giving him a nod you reply solemnly, “Yes.”
“And when we get to Bill and Frank’s? What do you know about that?” He says, and you blink back your tears, flashbacks of that episode occur in your mind, remembering their love for each other and what would happen once we got there. You apologetically smile at him, “Out of respect for the both of them. It’s best to find out when you get there.”
His eyebrows arch inwards in concern, “Are they okay?” And you hesitate, thinking how to appropriately word this without lying, but then you remember, “Yes, they’re content.”
Joel’s eyes look back down at the cairn the decides to get up. You see him hold out his hand for you, and you take it to hoist yourself up. “Let’s go back and see if Ellie’s awake.” He states, then let’s go of your hand, making his way back to the kid. You stand there for a second, glancing at the pile of stones that represent her legacy, then back at Joel, you decide to walk forward toward your future beginning to unfold.
TEN MILES WEST OF BOSTON — DAY
The sound of birds chirping can be heard as you walk behind Joel, finding Ellie awake with her sitting upright with her knees pulled to her chest and your jacket still being used as a makeshift blanket. Joel goes through his pack to get a bark of food and Ellie breaks the silence to question you, “You want your jacket back?”
You nod and grab it from her as she holds it out to you, putting it on, you remove Joel’s brown jacket to place it on top of Ellie. Her face drops, “Seriously?” And you shrug to whisper, “You guys need to talk too.” You begin to pack up and wear your backpack.
Joel takes a bite from his food only to crumple the wrapper to throw it at Ellie as if she was some dog. You look at him in slight annoyance as Ellie rolls her eyes and takes picks it up from the ground to also take a bite of food. He makes himself busy as he adjusts the strap of his worn-out backpack, trying to ignore the kid, but Ellie is persistent, “I’ve never been in the woods.” She chews before continuing, “More bugs than I thought.” Joel doesn’t respond, disregarding her statement, and fidgets with the buckles and straps. Ellie huffs, her shoulders tense and her voice louder as says, “Look, I’ve been thinking about…”
Joel shoots straight up to swing his backpack over his shoulder, “I don’t want your sorries.” Your eyes swing over to Ellie as she retorts, “I wasn’t gonna say I’m sorry. I was gonna say I’ve been thinking about what happened. Nobody made you or Tess take me. Nobody made you go along with this plan.” Joel stands there as he listens to her go on, “You needed a truck battery or whatever and you made a choice.” Then her voice lowers an octave and slightly quivers, “So don’t blame me for something that isn’t my fault.”
Joel has his jaw clenched and you could see the vein in his neck preparing to burst, but all he does is give a silent nod at Ellie, then she looks away. Joel picks up his rifle and Ellie stands up to walk to him, backpack, and food, in one hand and Joel’s jacket in the other. She stretches out her arm for Joel to take it from her, a truce, as he gently grabs it and folds it. A small smile stretches across your face and you relax.
“How much longer?” Ellie asks him, and he responds calmly, “Five-hour hike.” The kid nods and states, “We can manage that.”
You take note of the trees arching and twisting from above you, the leaves creating patterns with their shadows, and not a single blade of grass out of place. It’s surprisingly quiet and almost peaceful as you follow Joel and Ellie across the wooden bridge, letting your mind wander, and quietly hum tunes that remind you of home. And when you no longer wanted to hum, you reflected on what happened on September 26, 2003. When it all fell apart on Joel’s birthday. The day seemed so normal, with clear blue skies and a celebration of life between a father and a daughter. You should have known, but now you learn, blue skies were a sight you never trusted again.
“You’ve gone this way a lot? No infected?” Ellie asks, seemingly exhausted from not talking for so long. “Not often, no,” Joel replies, steadily looking for any form of danger, “What are you looking for?” And you respond for him, “People.” Ellie hums in acknowledgment, “Are Bill and Frank nice?” Joel replies lightly, “Frank is.” Glad you’re behind the two, and maybe it’s the past that’s talking, but flashes of their love come back to you in a blur.
Ellie continues asking Joel the question, “Where’d you get that scar on your head?” You frown at that and remember exactly how he got it, he sighs at her. “What? Is it something lame? Like you fell down the stairs or something?” Ellie teasingly said, and his whiskey-deep voice gravelly replied, “I didn’t fall down any stairs.”
“I fell down the stairs a lot in high school. Every year for four years.” You mumble your input without any thought and Ellie looks over at you with concern, “How the fuck are you still alive.” And you frown slightly, “To be honest, I have no fucking clue either.” The kid turns back to Joel, “Okay, so what then?” Ellie asks and Joel vaguely replies, “Someone shot at me and missed.”
“See, that’s cool. Did you shoot back?” The young girl states and looks at Joel with so much wonder and amazement, Joel glances at her and then responds, “Yeah.” Ellie continues, “You get him?” He’s practically done with her asking so many questions but replies anyway, “No, I missed too. It happens more often than you think.”
“Because you suck at shooting or, like, in general?” You then bite back a laugh at Ellie’s comment, however, your eyes crinkle as you do. Vexed, Joel turns to look at Ellie, then away from her, “In general.” You snort at his response and this time he looks over his shoulder to look at you and you stare right back at him.
Ellie glances at Joel’s revolver gun in its holder and looks back up at Joel, “You know, seeing as it’s just the three of us, and she has a gun already, I was thinking I should pro–” Joel doesn’t hesitate with his response, “No.” Ellie only rolls her eyes at his response and keeps quiet for a bit.
The three of you step over a fallen electric pole and turn a corner, “Cumberland Farms.” Ellie reads out the sign as you pass by it, Joel hurries his pace a bit before saying to you both, “Hang back a minute. I gotta grab some stuff I stashed.”
“Stashed? Why do you have stuff stashed here?” Ellie asks still following Joel, irritated he says, “You ask a lot of goddamn questions.” She smirks, “Yes, I do.” Joel opens the door to the store, the sound of metal scraping against the floor as he does. “So, you gonna answer me or what?” Joel sighs and gives in, “We hide supplies on routes in case we find ourselves short on gear which I currently am because…”
“No way!” Ellie exclaims happily, and hurriedly makes her way to a Mortal Kombat machine, “You ever play this one?” You watch her mash buttons and mess with the joystick, while Joel lingers around, “I had a friend who knew everything about this game. There’s this one character named Mileena who takes off her mask and she has monster teeth and then she swallows you whole and barfs out your bones.” She sighs, “Oh man.” You look to Joel, entertained by him looking through a bunch of junk, Ellie turns to notice what you're looking at, “You forgot where you put your stuff.”
Joel shakes his head and denies, “No. I’m just zeroing in on it. It’s been a couple of years.” You lightly laugh, your shoulders slightly bouncing up and down as you do, “So, what? You’re using echolocation to look for it?” Joel only glances at you and sighs. Ellie smiles and says, “Okay, well, I’m gonna take a look around. See if there’s anything good.” Joel kicks something and replies, “Trust me, it’s all been picked over already.” Ellie hums thoughtfully, “Maybe, maybe not.” She makes her way to an open door and asks, “Is there anything bad in here?”
“Just you.” He retorts, and Ellie sighs, “Ah, getting funnier.”
Joel shoves something and it doesn’t budge, “Fuck.” You laugh again at his struggle, and he looks at you unimpressed, “Do you, by any chance know where it is?” You smirk, “Yep.” He raises his eyebrows at you, “Do you wanna, maybe, I dunno, help me?” You twist your mouth to the side, cross your arms across your chest, and look up, mockingly thinking, “Eventually.”
Joel sighs at you, one hand on his hip as he does, then he says your name in a low-pitched voice, and you smile innocently at him from across the store. “And why won’t you tell me where it is?” You shrug and playfully say, “I like seeing you struggle.”
Electricity fills the air and you feel the warmth on your face, his brown eyes have now turned a shade darker than usual, and you watch him breathe a little deeper. Your tongue darts out a little bit to wet your lower lip and feel your heart race wildly. He stands there confidently, you notice his salt and pepper hair, his beautiful tan skin, and how the lines under his eyes and forehead remind you of maps you wish to trace your fingers on as they stretch, and there are too many miles to count.
Wide-eyed in realization, you open your mouth, finding words to explain or excuse yourself but found none. Closing your gaping mouth, you quickly turn around to walk out of the store. Joel says your name, low and thick, you can feel the vibrations through your bones, it stops you in your tracks with your back facing him, “Where do you think your goin’? Turn around.”
You close your eyes for a second and try to quiet your beating heart, you follow his command, like a puppet on a string. “Where is it?” He asks as you feel his stare roam all over your body even from the large gap between you two, and you blink owlishly at him and out of breath, “Um, it’s at, um…” You clear your throat and try again, “It’s at the end of the aisle, underneath the newspapers.”
“Come over here and help me lift this shit.” And your feet move forward to the man who is now crouched down and waiting for you. You kneel next to him, and as you tilt your head to look at him, you are now inches apart and unknowingly even closer at heart. You shyly look down on the piece of wood hiding his stash, “You should um, probably open it.”
He says nothing in response and you watch as he pulls his knife out and slices through the wood to create a small gap to lift it off the ground. You help him move it to the side, fingertips brushing against each other, feather-light touches that ignite a fire within you. In the corner of your eye, you see him begin to dig through the supplies he had left behind. It then occurs to you that you haven’t heard from Ellie in a while, you look to Joel with a concerned look, “We haven’t heard Ellie in a while,” you whisper.
He nods and proceeds to call for her, “Ellie?” He receives no response and the worry expands in your belly. Joel gets up and so do you, this time you try to call for her, “Ellie.” Getting nothing as well. Joel pulls out his revolver and turns to you, “Wait here.” You nod and follow his request, he approaches the door, “Ellie?” and she walks out fine and unscathed, “Picked over, my ass.” She says holding up a box of tampons.
You let out a sigh of relief, even though you knew she would be fine, but the nagging voice in the back of your mind reminds you that things could change for the better or worse in any situation. Your being in this universe has an effect now, especially the fact you’re running around with the two main characters of this story. Whatever you say or choose not to say will have repercussions if you’re not careful. That’s something you learned the hard way.
Joel puts his gun away as Ellie shoves her find into her pack. He kneels down to put away the green toolbox and rifle under his stash, Ellie watches and asks, “What are you doing?” He responds, “There’s not much ammo out there for this thing. Makes it mostly useless.” You help him put the board back on and to no one’s surprise she tries to take advantage of the opportunity, “Well, if you’re just gonna leave it there…” Joel stands and you follow suit, he looks at Ellie sternly, “No.”
He turns to walk out of the store and Ellie follows after him, defeated. You watch the two go-ahead before glancing at the open door, knowing exactly what Ellie had found down there. Swallowing down your fear, you force yourself to keep going.
You continue to walk along the road, the clouds march on and the trees bow down to give their leaves, to offer you some shade along your journey. Walking by you see the wreckage of an airplane atop a hill, broken parts, and pieces scattered along the field. Ellie breathes out, “Holy shit.” The three of you stop walking to gaze at it fondly, “You fly in one of those?” The kid asks you and Joel, and he replies, “Few times, sure.”
Ellie is looking up at you, searching for your answer, and you give her a nod, “Yeah, a couple of times.” She brings her focus back to the wreckage and sighs, “So lucky.” Joel disagrees, “Didn’t feel like it at the time. Get shoved into a middle seat, pay 12 bucks for a sandwich.”
“Dude, you got to go up in the sky,” Ellie says, and you frown, simple things that got taken for granted, you knew all too well. “Yeah, well, so did they,” Joel says with dejection in his voice, then decides to keep moving. Something all he’s ever known. Ellie mutters, “Grim.”
“So everything came crashing down in one day?” Ellie questions and Joel nods, “Pretty much.” Ellie doesn’t settle for that and chooses to follow up with a, “How? I mean, no one was infected with cordyceps. Everybody’s fine eating in restaurants and flying in planes. And then, all at once? How did it even start? If you have to get bit to get infected, then who bit the first person?” She pauses, “Was it a monkey? I bet it was a monkey.”
You huff in amusement, “If it were a monkey, this wouldn’t have happened.” Joel looks at you then turns back to Ellie and replies, “It wasn’t a monkey. I thought you went to school?” Ellie frowns, “FEDRA school. They don’t teach us how their shitty government failed to prevent a pandemic.”
You flinch at her statement and think for a nanosecond, fuck. You hear your memories echo back to you. You snort and throw a careless joke, “Everyone would blame our shitty government and all the scientists. How ignorant must you be for it to happen twice?” Adam replies, “Well, all disaster movies start with a scientist being ignored.”
You painfully exhale and look to Ellie, parroting back the words you heard not long ago, “All disasters start with a scientist being ignored.” Joel and Ellie listen to you intently as you remember what had happened, and you continue on, “A scientist named Dr. Neuman sometime in the 1960s had feared this would happen. People laughed and brushed it off.”
You close your eyes and try and untangle the strings of memories and information about their world, “Your outbreak started in Jakarta, Indonesia on September 24, 2003. A flour and grain factory, on the west side of the city. The perfect substrate. A normal woman suddenly turned violent, attacked four of her coworkers, and bit three of them. They locked her in the bathroom and when the police arrived, she tried to attack them, and they shot her. The people she bit were taken for observation. You could imagine what happened a few hours later.”
You open your eyes to realize you had stopped walking and see Joel and Ellie analyzing the new information, you press on, “No one knows who bit her first, but there were fourteen coworkers missing. Possibly already spreading the virus. The cordyceps mutated because the world got warmer, and some of it go into the food supply. Flour was the case, and there were certain brands of food that were sold everywhere all across the country, and across the world. Bread, cereal… pancake mix.” You paused, unable to go on, so Joel picked it up from there and continued walking as he spoke, “If you eat enough of it, it’ll get you infected. So the tainted food all hits the store shelves around the same time Thursday. People bought it ate some Thursday night or Friday morning. Day goes on, they started to get sick. Afternoon, evening… they got worse. Then they started biting. Friday night, September 26, 2003. And by Monday, everything was gone.”
Ellie is quiet for a bit then nods, “It makes more sense than monkeys. Thanks.” Joel lifts a shoulder, “Sure,” while you only nod with the silence that you continue to carry. Joel raises his arm to stop you and Ellie, “What?” She asks him. He exhales, “We’ll cut across the woods here.” Ellie looks at him skeptically, “Isn’t the road easier?”
“Yeah, it’s just… There’s some stuff up there you shouldn’t see.” Joel says, the tone in his voice very fatherly. You look to Ellie expectantly, as she cheekily smiles at him and walks ahead, “Well, now I have to see.”
“I don’t want you to.” Joel comments disapprovingly, but Ellie marches on, and he grunts, “Serious. Ellie.” You follow after the two, and the young girl asks, “Can it hurt me?” Joel replies straightforwardly, “No.” She turns and walks backward as she talks to him, “You’re too honest man. Should’ve said ax murderer.” Ellie carries on walking normally, while you and Joel look at each other consciously, with full awareness.
You decide to take a risky leap, gently take his hand, and squeeze it reassuringly. His weary eyes are drawn to your linked hands, fingers interlaced like a beautiful zipper of prayer. Hands are the maps and compasses we use to navigate our lives. Some people read palms to predict the future but you read hands to predict the past. Every scar has a tale worth sharing. Each calloused palm and fractured knuckle represents a missed punch or years spent in a factory. Your eyes tell him, ‘It’s okay, let her know.’ And he seems to understand, giving you a short nod. Because, what is a girl if not a buzzing creature discovering what the world will take from her?
“Whatever it is, I think it’s gone,” Ellie yells out to you both, only to stop short moments after to look at the ditch below. Skeletons were jumbled together and littered the dirt. You and Joel reach Ellie, with hands still intertwined, she’s looking up at you both for an explanation. Joel emits a long, deep, audible breath expressing his sadness, “About a week after Outbreak Day, soldiers… went through the countryside and evacuated the small towns. Told you you were going to a QZ, and you were… if there was room.” He hesitates, “If there wasn’t…”
These people were wiped clean away, leaving only a wristwatch or a blanket. The only proof that they ever existed. Ellie feels out of sorts as she mutters, “These people weren’t sick?” Joel replies fixed and controlled, “No, probably not.” The girl nods while blinking away her melancholy and frustration she asks quietly, “Why kill them? Why not just leave them be?” You take a shaky inhale before responding, “Because dead people can’t get infected.”
Joel squeezes your hand in reassurance, and it grounds you from remembering what had happened that sunny day. How easy it was for the government and military to manipulate everyone into believing everything was under control. People that you trusted and elected for a hopeful cause only for them to betray you in the end. You tip your head up to Joel and he looks at your sparkling eyes, looking up at him searching for some kind of answer. But he gazes at you, with no answers, instead, is filled with promises. Because what is an adult if not a terrified being desperate to protect something you can't save?
AMHERST COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS, LINCOLN, – NOON
You, Joel, and Ellie approach the electric fence gate surrounding the small town of Lincoln. The site is hauntingly beautiful, a white large house can be seen from a distance, while trees dance in the wind, you can picture this neighborhood having plenty of kids playing out on the street without a care in the world. As you approach the gate, there’s a number keypad attached to the side, he glances at you and Ellie, “Stay there.” He punches in the four-digit code and there is a high pitch ring, indicating that the passcode was correct, and the metal gate unlocks.
Joel opens the gate for Ellie to walk through first, and then you. He closes the gate behind him as he follows you both inside. The environment is suspenseful and suspiciously quiet, Joel places his hand on his revolver while noticing the wilting yellow flowers outside the house. He pushes down on the door handle, surprised that it was left unlocked, he removes his revolver from the holster and cautiously walks inside. Ellie mumbles, “What the fuck?” while Joel yells out, “Bill? Frank?” Your palms begin to sweat and you discreetly wipe them down on your pants, Joel turns to look at you and Ellie, “You stay there. You hear anything… you see anything yell.”
“What if they’re gone?” Ellie asks and Joel doesn’t respond, only looking at her before turning and opening the door to the kitchen. She sighs and proceeds to look around the house. A grand piano sits in the living room, and Ellie curiously presses on a bunch of keys to listen to the notes play. And then you spot it, head tilting, you carefully take the envelope and key that sat on top of the wooden table, and feel the sense of sorrow you knew followed you around like a shadow.
You look to Ellie who was staring at you expectantly and then hand her the letter. You didn’t need to read what you already knew. Your footsteps are heavy as you pull out a seat from the dining room table, and fold your arms atop the desk before bending your head down. Your muscles were aching and exhausted, while the pounding in your head decided to return for another round. Ellie pulls out the chair next to you and opens the letter, quietly reading it.
You hear Joel from down the hall, trying to knock and unlock the door of Bill and Frank’s room, but hear the front door shut from the wind. This causes him to jump and call out for you and Ellie. None of you decide to reply. He stalks down the hall and turns right to the dining room, to find you quiet and resting your head against the dining table with Ellie reading the letter.
“It’s from Bill.” The girl says, and Joel decides to holster his revolver again. She reads aloud, “‘To whomever, but probably Joel’. I figured I fell into ‘whomever.’” And then shrugs, “It came with this,” she pushes a key across the dusty table adjacent to her and he removes his backpack before tossing it to the floor. He grabs the key to inspect it and then states, “So they’re dead?” Ellie nods, “Mhm. You wanna…” Joel shakes his head no, “Go ahead. You do it.”
Ellie clears her throat before reading out loud the words you cried over for a good week, “August 29, 2023. If you find this, please do not come into the bedroom. We left a window open so the house wouldn’t smell but it will probably be a sight. I’m guessing you found this, Joel, because anyone else would’ve been electrocuted or blown up by one of my traps. Hehehehehehehehe.” She pauses in confusion but goes on, “Take anything you need. The bunker code is the same as the gate code but in reverse. Anyway, I never liked you but still, it’s like we’re friends, almost. And I respect you.”
You can already feel the flip in your stomach before you’ve even heard the part that would hit him the most, “So I’m gonna tell you something because you’re probably the only person who will understand. I used to hate the world, and I was happy when everyone died. But I was wrong because there was one person worth saving.”
And it all comes rushing back to you, the love story of Bill and Frank, a chance meeting that would have only happened during the end of the times. You quietly tried your best to sit up straight, but your posture is still drooping and sagging. Placing your elbows on the table, and folding your hands, interlocking your fingers, you closed your eyes and let your head rest against your hands. And when your eyes closed, your guards came down, tears freely flowed down your cheeks, mentally deadened, tired, and nauseous as you listened, “That’s what I did. I saved him. Then I protected him. That’s why men like you and me are here. We have a job to do and God help any motherfuckers who stand in our way. I leave you all of my weapons and equipment. Use them to keep…” Ellie stops abruptly, not wanting to continue.
Ellie purses her lips together in a line while Joel snatches the letter to read what she could not. To keep Tess safe. He swallows down his guilt and anger, “Stay here.” You open your puffy, bloodshot eyes as you hear him storm out of the house leaving the door open behind him. Feeling out of focus and indisposed, like a single loose thread that comes all undone. You curl one leg up to your chest and let your chin rest on top of it, and you can feel the snot dripping down your nose as you do. Bring the sleeve of your jacket, to wipe it off from your face, then use the palms of your hands to wipe the tears away.
But it proves useless as the tears continue to flow, Ellie silently moves to stand next to you and then gives an unexpected, but not unwelcomed, hug. You continue to cry harder, choking on every breath you take as you do, as you wrap your arms around Ellie’s waist and silently stroke your hair. Joel comes back to the house finding the sight of you broken and sobbing uncontrollably. Ellie only looks at him with saddened eyes, and a silent plea to help you.
You’re uncomfortably shattering into pieces, stitch by stitch it tears you apart, and a stained-glass variation of the truth leaves your brokenness on display. Joel walks behind you, unsure what to do or say, but he can feel the magnetic pull of wanting and needing to help you, quietly he asks you, “What do you need?”
He wouldn’t have heard it if it wasn’t incredibly silent if your voice hadn’t echoed off the walls, your voice hiccuping, so small and soft as you admit, “I don’t know…” But Joel does. Without question, Ellie gently lets go of you, to be replaced by Joel’s large arms wrapped around your shaking frame.
The seasons will eventually change, and you may choose to go into them shattered and busted, with stiff souls, wounded hearts, and raggedy spirits. But the tiny part of you will continue on because hope endures the agony of sadness; it does not require your protection or defense. For now, you will allow yourself to cry, sigh, and wish for things to be different in the comfort of the two people you’ve grown close with. Later, you will discover raw, wrung-out calm when you allow yourself to be human.
After a reprieve, you willed yourself to stop crying. You take a shaky inhale and be the first one to pull away from Joel. Sweaty, puffy, and slightly dehydrated, from the amount of crying you’ve managed to do in a small amount of time. You feel drowsy, exhausted, overwhelmed, and embarrassed. Rubbing your face with both hands, you heavily exhale and try to regroup yourself as you do.
Joel gently holds your wrist to reveal your face, he’s kneeling down in front of you, “You good?” Your eyes shift uncontrollably across his face, not able to focus on him properly but you nod anyway, you have to keep going, “Mhm, yes. I’m good now,” you said. He gives you a short nod and slowly pushes himself up to face Ellie who was quietly sitting down again, “Show me your arm.”
Ellie stands up and lifts her sleeve to reveal the bite on her arm already healing. Joel nods and says, “I just finished making a truck battery. It’s charging right now.” Ellie nods back, “Okay.” He continues on, “I have a brother out in Wyoming. He’s in some kind of trouble and I’m headin’ out there to find ‘em. He used to be a Firefly.” Ellie continues to silently nod, indicating that she was listening to him as he spoke, “And my guess is he knows where some of them are out there. Maybe they can get you to wherever this lab is.”
Ellie blinks, “All right. Listen about Tess…” But Joel shuts that down pretty quickly, he lifts his hand to stop her, “If I’m taking you with me, there’s some rules you gotta follow. Rule one, you don’t bring up Tess. Ever. Matter of fact, we can keep our histories to ourselves. Rule two, you don’t tell anyone about your… condition. They see that bite mark, they won’t think it through. They’ll just shoot you. Rule three, you do what I say when I say it.”
Joel looks at you pointedly, “Rule three applies to you too Hummin’ bird.” Your face scrunches up in annoyance and exclaim, “But I’m a grown adult!” Joel only lifts his eyebrows, “Do you know exactly what happens now from here on out? You ever lived in an apocalyptic world?” You move your eyes away from him and mumble defeatedly, “No, and just a few hunches and theories, I guess.” He harrumphs and looks at you and Ellie, “Are we clear?” He says. You both respond, “Yes.”Joel’s eyes narrow and says without smiling, “Repeat it.”
“What you say goes,” Ellie says and he looks to you for the same statement, “What you say goes, Cowboy.” He lets out a huff and shifts his weight to his other foot, “Okay,” he mumbles. The kid questions aloud, “So what now?” And Joel decides it’s time to start preparing, “We grab what we can.”
Loud footsteps are heard as the three of you descend the metal stairs, Joel flicks on a switch and the lights flicker open. The sound of the 80s playlist playing can be heard filling the room. Joel goes to pause it while Ellie takes a good walk around the bunker, and looks at the wall of guns, “Holy shit. This guy was a genius.” You laugh lightly at her comment, walk over to Joel’s side to look at the playlist and security cameras, saying “Well, under normal circumstances, this would be seen as paranoid.”
Ellie snorts in amusement and acknowledgment, she turns to Joel and asks, “Why was the music on?” Joel places his hands on the table and replies contemplatively, “If he doesn’t reset the countdown every few weeks, this playlist would run over the radio.” Ellie makes her way to the side of the monitor, she peeks at it and states, “‘80s.” He glances from behind him, not wanting to dwell on it any longer, and tells the kid, “Grab some cans from over there. Nothin’ dented or swollen.” She lingers a bit by the wall of guns on display and points at it saying, “Dude.” Only to be replied with Joel’s firm, “No.” Ellie exasperated, “There’s a wall of them.” He gives her one hard look and Ellie pinches her lips into a thin line, walking away to start grabbing the canned food.
Joel’s gaze turns to you, while you tilt your head to the side to look up at him, and you feel a question forming on the tip of your tongue, the way you hold your breath as you wonder if it’s even worth bringing up, you and him inches away from touching, lingering and wanting you to say something. Instead, you pull away from his malt-musing mountain gaze, away from the comfort of his warmth and inviting pull. Afraid of what this could mean, or the possibility you might wake up and find yourself alone again. To only find his ghost wandering in your kitchen, haunting you if this all turns out to be nothing.
“I’m gonna go, um, help Ellie.” You say pointing behind you with your thumb, and then stumble your way around the bunker to look for the young girl. He watches you leave his side, and if he could have one wish it would be to have more time. He’d like to stop the clock and make time stand still because this is just how he always wants to feel. To hear the way she stumbles when she answers, and just for a little bit, secretly, he forgets about his cynicism because he can't wait to see what happens next.
You three end up going through everything in Bill and Frank’s home. On the upper floor, you and Ellie look around the bedroom as Joel opens the door to a closet, pulls on the pull cord switch of the light, and grabs a box of women’s clothes in Ellie’s size and yours. You and her open the box and happily dig through the pile of clothes that had been left behind. Eventually, you settle on a basic white tee, a pair of cargo pants, new white socks, and a lovely maroon leather jacket.
All three of you decide to check on the battery, Joel turns the knob of the charger and grunts, “Needs another hour.” Ellie checks the faucet by the sink and turns it to the right and happy squeals, “They have hot water! I’m taking a shower.” She then looks to Joel who was busy sorting through the clutter, “And then you’re both showering. Because seriously…” And before walking away she makes a sound to signal you both that you reeked of sweat and more stench imaginable. She walks away to go back inside the house and leaves you both alone together.
Not knowing what to do or say, you give yourself a hug, arms folding in front of your middle, eyes darting to everything but him. Joel watches the way you shift around the bunker. He does not know what you are thinking, how you prefer your tea, if you take sugar in your coffee, or whether you like walking in the rain. He takes notice of the way you keep going just like he does, when you laugh it sounds like a melody he’s all too familiar with but there’s a different hidden note between each breath you take.
You are impossible. Impossible is admitting you came from a different universe, it’s also attempting to connect in this world, trying to hang on to others while everything around you is exploding. And yet you’re standing there in front of him, real and full of light. He does not want to believe it, he worries in his mind that he will destroy each and every part of you, engrossing darkness and bitterness he has accumulated for the past twenty years. Beginning on the day the world fell apart, when it took Sarah away from him. And the weight of the world was placed on his shoulders.
You begin to hum to yourself as you take a walk around the bunker and appreciate the lengths Bill went through to keep him and Frank safe. Joel finally gives in to the tug of war in his mind and asks, “What song were you hummin’ on the hike here, Birdie? I didn’t recognize the melody this time.” His question pulls your attention away from the wall of guns and you incline your head toward him, “Oh? Uh, just a song from my world, I guess…” He looks at you expectantly and you take it as a cue to continue, “It’s a song by Adele.” You said as you scrunched your nose a bit. A look of puzzlement crossed his face, “Who’s Adele?” he says. You slowly blink at him, “Damn, your world ended too soon and robbed you of Adele.”
The conversation continues on, it goes from books to favorite drinks, and bit by bit you’re beginning to piece together the man in front of you. It astounds you, how he kept going even when the world took away the people he loved. And later you hear Ellie yelling from the house, telling you both she’s done, you look to Joel and he tells you to use the shower first. You smile at him and give him a small thanks as you head up the stairs. The small talk you both had left him floating and hates that his mind continues to think about worse-case scenarios and look for emergency exits just in case. But is it courage or faith that he shows up every day? And maybe one day he won’t be afraid.
After the nice steaming hot shower, and changing into your new-ish clothes, you yell Joel’s name to tell him it’s his turn. He proceeds to go into the bathroom and you go downstairs to see Ellie messing with the piano keys, you gently tap her shoulder and she looks up at you with adorable eyes full of wonder, “Scoot over.” The kid moves and you sit down on the piano bench next to her, you mumble, “I’m surprised it’s still tuned after all these years.” Ellie’s ears perk up, “You know how to play?” and you tilt your head to the left, “Just enough to impress friends now and then.” She smiles, “Can you show me? Please?”
Your mouth pinches in thought, wondering which song you could play, “Hrm, I guess I could. But you might not recognize this piece of music since it was never released here.” She nods excitedly, “It’s no big deal. I need to hear you sing since you keep humming all the time.” You roll your eyes at that, “Okay, okay.”
You ready yourself, comfortably slouched, and your head down. Your fingers glide over the keys and you begin to sway as you play the starting notes of Adele’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’. “When the rain is blowing in your face. And the whole world is on your case. I could offer you a warm embrace. To make you feel my love,” You sang softly as your fingers continued to dance over the ivory keys, your spirit became virtually an allure with each small sway of your head and body. Joel silently walks down the stairs, enchanted and allured by your melodious voice. He leans on the frame of the foyer, slicked back salt and pepper hair, and currently has the softest eyes for you.
“The storms are raging on the rollin' sea. And on the highway of regret. The winds of change are blowing wild and free… You ain't seen nothing like me yet.” You sang and the buildup as it developed into a slow roll that shattered into the souls of everyone who listened like a tremendous tsunami. Joel and Ellie were entranced by the enticing music emanating from your voice, resulting in a tranquil silence. The lyrics soared and swelled from the depths of your spirit as if everyone in that room could sense your hope and affection. Your love became their love, and the audience and singer became one.
“I could make you happy, make your dreams come true… Nothing that I wouldn't do. Go to the ends of the earth for you, to make you feel my love. To make you feel my love.” You vocalized and slowly stopped playing on the ivory keys, letting out a sigh of relief you turn to Ellie who is in awe of your talent and skill. “Damn, I wish we could bring this with us.” She says and you throw your head back in laughter, your shoulder moving as you catch your breath, “Joel would break his back carrying this thing.”
“You callin’ me old, sweetheart?” Joel says smugly, you and Ellie swiftly turn to look behind you, to find him relaxed, happy, and all cleaned up. You can feel your body begin to burn in embarrassment and attraction to the pet name he called you. Including the fact, he’s pulling off the wet look pretty damn fucking well. Ellie saves you from having to explain yourself and comments on his appearance, “Well, don’t you look pretty.”
That brings him back to reality and begins to become grumpy old Joel once more, “Shut up.” He mutters and then tosses her a stick of deodorant which she catches. The kid looks at it and comments, “Nice,” then proceeds to get up from the bench with you following after the both of them.
You make your way to the blue Chevy S-10, Ellie goes to the front passenger seat but Joel clicks his tongue, “Go sit in the back, Ellie.” She groans and as she was about to walk to the back of the Chevy you shake your head, “It’s okay, you can take it for the meantime, I suspect you haven’t been in a car before.” And Ellie is practically vibrating with joy as she hops inside the car, Joel looks at you from the rearview mirror and you give a thumbs up while Ellie continues to explore parts of the car, “It’s like a spaceship,” she says and you hide a laugh while Joel mumbles, “It’s like a piece of shit Chevy S-10 but it’ll get us there.” And after a moment he adds, “I think.”
Joel begins to put on his seatbelt and he tells Ellie to do the same, but she only gives him a perplexed look, which he then shows her and she clicks it in place while smiling, “So cool.”
He turns the key and the engine rives to life, Ellie opens the glove compartment and finds a cassette tape, he glances at her, “Would you leave it?” Ellie gives him a cheeky grin to slide it into the radio. “Put it back. Ellie.” Joel states in a serious tone. Linda Ronstadt’s ‘Long Long Time’ begins to play, the first ever song you hummed a couple of days ago. You look out the window to the left, Joel and Ellie converse as you tune out the rest of the world, only listening to the music. You hear the buzzing of the gate open and Joel drives into the open road, and the lovely voice of Linda Ronstadt reminds you that love will transcend into every universe, and the thought of that lulls you to gently close your eyes and let yourself fall asleep.

End Notes: (Idk do people read this? Btw this is lengthy since lol almost 10k words o-o)
Yes, Type 9 is The Runner-away-er of Conflict… hecking I had this whole argument planned out at first, all the yelling and fighting between the reader and Joel and nearly going through with that concept, but in the end decided against it. Because to me, it felt too soon. It wouldn’t progress the story forward, it would have just taken twenty steps back lmao. Joel is the type to keep going, to keep moving cuz he has to. So him reminiscing would be out of character and the reader getting mad and confronting him wOULD ALSO BE OUT OF CHARACTER LMAO
Anyways, as you read, I ended up giving them a moment to mourn and talk it out, because I felt like you needed to hear those words too. Do not throw away your life just to make someone happy. That’s destructive.
I tried my best to write about grief this chapter, and had to rewatch Episode 3 to put myself through the torture again hooray! Towards the end, you can see my writing become somewhat poetic(?) but honest. I didn’t want to extremely exaggerate it but just enough to hopefully make u cry a bit. If you did cry pls tell me, it tells me that I wrote okay enough for you to cry)
But I also wanted it to give you some hope and to remind you that you are a light in many people's lives I promise.
Furthermore, I lowkey procrastinated on this chapter, I was hoping it would be out by Wednesday but the new Hogwarts Legacy game has me in a chokehold so I 1000% got distracted!
OFF TO EPISODE 4 I GOOOO I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING UR COMMENTS MWA ILY <3

Hi🥭 What color does Kate describe the eyes of the suitors? For example, I've seen her describe Ellis' eyes as twilight, but that's not even a color
Hi ⸜(˙꒳˙ ) If I recall correctly, these are their eye colors. Victor's isn't even a color either.
William - Blood red
Harrison - Mint green
Liam - Rose
Elbert - Blue
Alfons - Ash grey
Roger - Amber
Jude - Amethyst
Ellis - Twilight
Victor - Jewel-like
With Ellis, I think the color of the twilight sky suits him since he mainly has purple eyes with yellow highlights at the bottom. Of course, that's likely a stylistic choice from the character designer, but the "color" still fits, regardless of if that highlight is acknowledged or not.

Friends In the Dark - Prologue
Ellie Williams x Reader x Abby Anderson - Twilight AU
Minors, Men and general fuckheads DNI please 💚
Content Warnings: Discontent about moving, reader has only ever had relationships with women, all characters that are in high school are 18, rain and storms, light stalking, being watched while asleep, dead dad is dead, your mom is doing her best
Word Count: 1.8K
You hadn’t been to Jackson in years, not since your dad had died, but your mother was dragging you back. of course she was. It wasn’t like you’d set up a life for yourself in Detroit. Your friends, your school, your ex-girlfriend (she was more of an ex-situationship, she didn’t like you as much as you liked her.) Maybe where she was involved the move was for the better. But for the rest of the stuff, you were pissed. Who moves school in their senior year? Weirdos. And army kids but that’s besides the point. It’s mainly weirdos…
You had been driving for about twenty hours (not including the night spent in that dusty motel that had definitely been aiding affairs since the eighties) when the turn off for Jackson finally popped up on a sign and almost as soon as your mom had pulled into the exit, the rain started. Big fat tears of water pelted the windscreen of the hired moving truck and the wipers could barely keep up. GREAT. Rain and cardboard boxes don’t mix too well, and if your boxes ended up getting ripped-
“So are you excited to be starting a new school?”
“I guess? I'm gonna miss everyone…”
“You know I didn’t get much of a choice in moving, besides your grandparents are here…”A hesitant pause comes from your mother, she always did this when she was nervous for your response to her upcoming suggestion or comment, “it’ll be a change but maybe a change will do you good? Us good?”
Her right hand leaves the steering wheel and comes to rest upon your knee, giving you a little squeeze of reassurance. You can still see the dent where your mom’s wedding ring once sat, moving your hand to cover her’s as it still rested on your leg and return the little squeeze. A soft smile graces your lips as you meet her gaze and see how your mother is clearly as conflicted, if not more conflicted than you were yourself. You were leaving behind something, she was returning to face everything.
The beating of the rain against the truck’s windows eventually evened out, the harsh drumming of watery bullets coming to a soft drizzle allowing you to see more than a few yards ahead of the vehicles hood, and like out of nowhere a sign came into view ‘WELCOME TO JACKSON - Population 5093’, they’ll need to change that you think to yourself. But the sign is so waterlogged and beaten down so it looks as though it hasn’t been changed in at least a decade. Taking a sharp bend in the road sends you jolting to the side, your head spins with whiplash as the seat belt digs deeply into your chest. As you come back from the shock of the slice of pain from nearly having a rib broken, a straight section of cracked asphalt spreads out ahead of you and you welcome it with open arms.
“Our new place is on the far side of town, near the river. You remember going down there when you were little, right?”
“Oh yeah! Forgot about that… Do you think Dina and Cat still live ‘round there?”
“Probably, Jackson’s always been pretty stale. Hell, I remember when those people that came out from Seattle when you were very small and it was the only thing people would talk about for about a month.” You smile to yourself as your mother loses herself to her train of thought. “The Andersons, the ones that took over old doctor Smith’s place when he died? They had a kid, I think she was about your age.”
“So you remember what she was called?”
“It was Abigail, she was my best friend, mom.”
“Oh, that's right, honey. Your dad always said I was bad with names and I'm starting to think he may have been right.”
Huh… you wonder what your childhood friends and companions were doing now, would they still be here? Maybe, if your mom was right about Jackson being as sleepy as she said they’d probably still be there, god knows it would be great not having to start completely fresh…
Trees and tired out store fronts whizz by as your mom refuses to slow for anyone or any speed limit for that matter, a steady fifty miles an hour pushes you down the Main Street quick enough that you can’t even recognise some of the landmarks before they’ve been left far behind the two of you. The streets and shops with apartments above them give way to trees, parks and large family homes with tidy lawns and nifty flagstone patios outside, the soft golden glow of fairy lights strung above the walkways in the center of town are being replaced with the light of streetlamps, their glare turning everything around them an ugly orange.
The house you pull into is plain and unassuming. Perfectly quaint. The rain is still battering the glass as the engine comes jittering to rest, a welcome break from the constant movement for both you and the machine. You sit in near silence as your mom pulls the phone from her pocket, glances up at the building then back to the illuminated screen and repeats her motions once more. She clears her throat, “Welp, this is us. Looks bigger in person.” Digging into her pocket, a jingling set of keys emerge. “Wanna run and unlock the door, we can grab the boxes when the rain stops. I just need to call the woman from the realtors to say we got here.”
Turning the key in the lock the door immediately pushes back, letting you step inside and off the wet wooden porch. Setting the backpack from your shoulders on to the ground you allow yourself to take in your surroundings. It’s definitely bigger than your apartment back in Salt Lake City, the living room has a threadbare left carpet and a couch that’s in a similar state, nothing else of note really. Making your way through the house you pass an office space and open a door to reveal a large kitchen. It’s a gaudy mess that hasn’t been updated since at least the turn of the century with a wonky dining table in one corner and yellowing cream paint plastered on the walls, the pale wood panelling and cupboards do nothing to modernize the space. Your mom will love it.
A shuffling comes up behind you and your mom lets out an impressed whistle. “Je-sus! Look at this, it’s beautiful in here! Look at those cabinets and original splash back! I can only imagine the-”
You walk off letting your mom go off on her tangent on her plans for changing (more like preserving) the ancient kitchen. A set of stairs lead off from the living room, dark wood wash and worn down carpet line the steps as you venture upstairs, opening each door as you move across the landing. A bedroom, another bedroom, a bathroom, a storage closet with a hot water tank, one last bedroom. Cute.
“Darling, would you come down here and help me with the mattresses?”
Coming back down the stairs you are met with a rather amusing sight. Your mom trying to haul a large box up the front steps and onto the porch proper, the rain dampening the boxes and causing them to slip back down to the tiled path leading away from the door.
“Just the mattresses for tonight, they left them in the garage.”
“They’re new? The mattresses?”
“Yep, hell of a lot cheaper to buy them new instead of boxing up the old ones.”
Your mom explains briefly as you push the second of the boxes from the bottom of the steps and through the door, “I’ll bring them upstairs, mom.”
She tilts her head, “and why have you decided to be so helpful all of sudden?”
Turning your head to face her, one of the boxes already in your arms. “I want the first pick of the bedrooms, that’s all!”
Pushing the door open to the second largest bedroom, you set down the smaller boxed mattress and look around at the space, the walls are plain but the paint job wasn’t too bad at all, the wooden flooring had a few stickers stuck here and there but hey you can fix that easy enough, but the features only solidify the choice in your mind. Built-in wardrobe? Great. A window seat looking out onto the street? Jackpot. And the best thing? It's all yours.
Breaking the seal on the box, you let the foam and cloth expand on the floor before going across the hall and doing the same for your mother, she appears not a minute later with a plastic cereal bowl with a faded purple butterfly on the side, the red contents swirling around the rim of the container as she hands it to you.
“I know we had dinner on the interstate but I thought you could use a snack before heading to bed, we'll be busy as heck tomorrow so I expect you to get your head down and lights out. Got it?”
You laugh at her antics and respond only with a two finger salute and a curt “Yes ma’am.”
She places a chaste kiss on your forehead and leaves you in your new room, a bowl of soup and a fuzzy blue blanket, your only visible company for the rest of the evening. Sitting on the window sill you watch as the rain dies down enough so that it’s nothing more than a mizzling drizzle, a fox runs across the deserted road the only sign of life that you see as you eat and take what can only be described as a well-deserved break from the near constant travelling of the past few days.
Setting the emptied bowl on the floor by the door, spoon clinking around inside, you make your way over onto the now spread out mattress and manage to make the rather scarce accommodations into a make-shift futon for the night. Wrapping yourself in the blanket and closing your eyes, you’re greeted by a dreamless exhaustion-induced sleep.
Your sleepless form is left spread out and content on the floor, completely none the wiser for the green eyes drinking in the sight of you from the windowsill outside.
Thanks for reading, I hope to have the first proper chapter out soon!
If you are going to follow, please remember if I check to see your age on your blog and if I can’t see an age I block you from following, so no minors. 💚

𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙 ? - Yeah/Nope
𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙧'𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚 - this is actually kinda cute ngl but it's short cause I didn't really know what else to put lmao, hope you enjoy!!
PLEASE REBLOG MY WORK!! ITS APPRECIATED!!
Plastic on plastic clinking slowly became the only noise in the room as you went through each and every disk case, reading titles and making fun of plots. A stack though, was dedicated the ones that had first caught your interest.
"Look at this one," She said softly, turning the case so you could see it. The title alone could make anyone giggle, "Dick. Love that." "Joel says it's about some president, and those two become like his secret staff or whatever."
You snorted, continuing to shift through the discs in search of two very specific choices you both decided on for the night.
"We should watch it some time." You hummed in response before glancing over to her. "You do realize that it's probably super corny, right? Or did you see the blonde girls and get excited?"
A sarcastic 'ha, ha' left her lips as she shoved your shoulder, throwing the movie into the bullshit pile.
"No fucking way." "Mhm." From the corner of your eye you could see her glare and slight upset at the teasing. Her cute pout resting on her lips.
"Ells, I was just kidding." You leaned forward, squishing her cheeks before holding up a DVD. "Found it." "Fucking finally!" And with that she snatched it away, standing up from the floor while holding the top of your head for support.
"Hey! Could've at least given me a tiny 'thank you', but sure, glad to help." You said as Ellie laughed, dusting it off and putting it into her player. "Thank you, babe." She grinned, eyes on you as you stepped up and fell back onto the bed.
"Sure you are. So thankful you forgot to tell me." Ellie hurried to hit play on the movie, turning and jumping onto the bed beside you. "M'sorry." She leaned over, kissing your cheek so hard it smooshed.
"C'mere." Ellie mumbled, scooting up against the pillows and holding her arms out for you. "Do I have to?" She scoffed at that, gripping your hips and pulling you into her middle. "You smell like dust." "Shh, babe, it's starting."
Ellie placed a hand over your mouth as the movie began, muffling your giggles and making a cheeky smile appear on her face.
Just as it happened, the words 'Jurassic Park' flashed across screen, the lamp beside you being flicked off. And suddenly a blanket was strung across both of your bodies and a pair of arms cuddled you close.
"I didn't agree to be a teddy bear, y'know."
"And I didn't agree to watch Twilight later, but we are, because I love you."
You gave a big smile, focusing back on the screen while cuddling into the blanket. Listening to the people on screen.
"You've never seen it, how can you know you like it?"
"Babe, have you met me?"
You huffed, pursing your lips slightly while dramatically looking away.
"Yes, in fact, I have. I think you'll find quite the interest in sparkly vampires, actually." "Uh huh, sure."
"I bet on it."
"So Edward is really just gonna leave her there like that?" You nodded your in head in response to her question. Ellie kicked out in front of you, laying on her stomach with her legs in the air.
"Yep. He comes back though."
"He fucking better."

Robin Doesn't Know the Evil Hiding in the Shadows ~ Ellis Twilight ~ Premium End
This a fan translation so it is definitely not 100% accurate. I do not own anything related to Ikemen Villains. Support Cybird by buying their amazing stories!
CW: Contains themes of suicide
Part 1 | Part 2 | Bitter End | Premium End | Epilogue
Ellis: “…There he is.”
I found the culprit in a corner of the event venue.
Haggard man: “Ah, it’s you…”
The man took out a bottle from his bag and showed it to me.
Haggard man: “This bottle contains a highly volatile and deadly poison.”
Haggard man: “If the bottle is dropped or broken, the poison will spread throughout the air…and everyone in this venue will die.”
(…If that’s the case, I can’t just grab him carelessly.)
(If I don’t take the bottle from the man’s hand…)
Ellis: “…Why are you doing this?”
Haggard man: “If you’re here, you probably know most of the situation.”
Ellis: “But I still want to hear it from you.”
Haggard man: “…”
Haggard man: “The motive for my crime was… to get revenge for the fact that they exhumed my wife’s body to use for anatomy classes.”
Haggard man: “My wife was supposed to finally be free from the pain of her illness and be able to rest in peace!”
Haggard man: “And then, she was exposed to the eyes of so many students…”
Haggard man: “Everyone was looking at her corpse as if she were a laboratory animal…”
Ellis: “But, you killed the medical students that hired the company, didn’t you?”
Ellis: “Your revenge has already been achieved…so why do you need to kill so many innocent people?”
Haggard man: “There’s a simple reason.”
Haggard man: “If there are no bodies to dissect and outlaws are robbing graves, then we should just make more bodies.”
Haggard man: “I want my wife’s resting place to never be disturbed again… I need a body.”
Ellis: “If you’re that determined…”
Ellis: “…Why did you leave a warning message after your last murder?”
Haggard man: “It was because of the piece of cake this morning.”
Haggard man: “You might be thinking ‘what’s the big deal?’ But to me, that piece of cake reminded me of the fun times I spend with my wife.”
Haggard man: “Since you gave me the cake, I thought I’d give you a hint if you were investigating the case.”
Ellis: “If that was the case…I don’t think…”
Ellis: “I believe that everyone lives with pain and joy that only they can understand.”
Ellis: “…I don’t want to say anything without knowing anything.”
(…I might feel similar.)
(The wishes of this man… and my own are surely very close.)
He wanted her to be happy, to be free from pain and suffering.
If reality was so harsh, He wished she would at least be sleeping peacefully with a smile on her face…
They had violated the sleep of his loved one.
(If the same thing happened to Kate…)
(I’d probably do the same thing as him.)
No matter how many times I was told it was wrong, no matter how many times Crown tried to stop me,
I would surely be consumed by rage and commit a heinous act to exact my revenge.
Haggard man: “…You’re trying to buy time with your conversation right now.”
Haggard man: “Is it because someone important to you is at the venue?”
Ellis: “…”
Haggard man: “In that case… let me show you how to protect the people at the venue.”
Without letting go of the bottle, the man used his other hand to pull out a powder from his pocket.
Haggard man: “This is the poison I was carrying with me to kill myself after I had completed my crime.”
Haggard man: “If you consume this… I will refrain from killing the people in the venue out of respect for your love.”
Haggard man: “You said you would protect her before she got hurt.”
Haggard man: “…Now, show me you can protect her.”
(If I take the powder, I’ll die.)
(If I don’t take it, the poison in the bottle will kill Kate.)
I suddenly shifted my gaze to the center of the venue and spotted Kate among the crowd of people.
Kate was so engrossed in the presentations at the venue, laughing, being surprised… her eyes lit up.
(If the only choice is between me dying and Kate dying…)
(…Obviously, I choose to die.)
Ellis: “…I’ll take the poison.”
Ellis: “My life and Kate’s are both precious, but…”
Ellis: “If it’s a matter of two dying or one dying, it’s better that only one dies.”
Haggard man: “…Two? Only one will die either way.”
Ellis: “I don’t think I can find happiness in a world without Kate.”
Ellis: “If Kate dies, I’ll definitely follow her.”
Ellis: “So it’s either two people who die, or one.”
Haggard man: “…Well, whatever. If you’re that determined, the go ahead and do what you want.”
The man tossed me the powder, which I picked up and, without hesitation, consumed in one gulp.
Ellis: “Ugh…! Gh, Aaah…ngh!!”
My knees buckled and I collapsed to the ground.
Haggard man: “You really would take poison.”
I heard a man’s voice, and the sound of something being placed next to me as I collapsed.
Haggard man: “In honor of your love, I will leave the bottle here, unused.”
Roger: “…Don’t move! That’s enough.”
Jude: “Just follow me obediently.”
Haggard man: “Yeah. I’ll follow you.”
Jude: “…Really, how long’re ya gonna sleep so carefree, Ellis?”
Ellis: “Mm…Sorry.”
When I sat up, the man Roger was restraining had a look of shock on his face.
Haggard man: “Wh-Why are you alive…!?”
Ellis: “I was learning some magic tricks. I’d pretend to consume things I shouldn’t, like poison…and then let it go down my sleeve.”
I flapped my sleeve and the powder I hadn’t taken flew into the air.
(I never thought the skills Victor taught me would come in handy in a situation like this.)
Roger: “Ellis, that’s important evidence you know?”
Ellis: “Ah…Sorry. I have some in my other sleeve too, so I thought that would be enough.”
Haggard man: “Were you deceiving me…? Was your love a lie…?”
Ellis: “My love for Kate is not a lie.”
Ellis: “I still haven’t made Kate happy enough… so I couldn’t let either of us die.”
(If only one of us can survive, me or Kate, then I want Kate to live,)
(…But, there’s no need to choose that option.)
Even if I reversed the options presented to me, I want to be happy tomorrow with Kate.
Ellis: “Besides—One day it will be me who kills Kate. Not you.”
Haggard man: “What the… you…”
Jude: “…Yer still crazy as ever.”
And so, before night fell—in the twilight, the incident came to an end.
Kate: “Ellis, I’m back!”
Ellis: “Welcome back, Kate.”
Ellis: “You must be tired after being out all day aren’t you? I’ll go make some tea, so wait for me in my room.”
Kate: “I’ll take you up on that offer, thank you.”
I prepared tea and cake and brought it to the room.
It’s late at night, but tonight is special.
Ellis: “So, how was your event?”
Kate: “It was awesome! At the end of the event, they announced something really big! It was—”
With sparkling eyes, Kate spoke with joy.
(…I’m glad I was able to protect Kate’s happy day.)
If even one thing about today’s events had gone wrong…
I might not have been able to exchange words with Kate tonight.
(I want to continue to protect this daily routine.)
(But… I wonder if ‘that’s all’ is enough.)
Kate: “Whew…. I’ve finished talking…! Ellis, you’re such a good listener.”
Ellis: “Really? Maybe it seems that way because listening to your stories is fun.”
Kate: “When someone says that to me, I get carried away and end up talking too much…”
Ellis: “Fufu…that’s good. I want to hear more about your day.”
Kate: “Enough about me! …Now can I hear about your day, Ellis?”
Ellis: “Mine…?”
Ellis: “My story is boring. I just did a little mission with Jude and Roger—”
Not wanting to ruin Kate’s fun, I tried to hide it.
Kate: “…Really? You look like something’s happened, so I’m curious…”
As she said this, Kate had a worried look on her face.
(…I can’t beat Kate.)
I told Kate everything that happened today.
Kate: “So that’s what happened…”
Kate: “Thank you, Ellis. For protecting my peace of mind.”
Ellis: “No, thank you.”
Ellis: “Hearing that you enjoyed the event today made me even happier that we were able to solve the problem.”
After I said that, Kate looked at me in silence for a moment.
Ellis: “…What’s wrong?”
Kate: “Ellis, you seem a bit depressed. Is it because of the grave robber?”
(Really… I can’t hide anything from Kate.)
Ellis: “…Yeah. This incident got me imagining things a little bit.”
Ellis: “Like, what if, after we fall asleep happily… someone hurts you?”
Ellis: “I was worried that our eternity would be shattered…”
Kate: “Hmm…”
Kate: “…Oh, I’ve got a great idea.”
Kate: “Maybe we should build a grave for both of us somewhere far out in the country?”
Ellis: “A grave… in the countryside?”
Kate: “Yes. With the sunlight shining down beautifully, and lots of flowers blooming…”
Kate: “…Let’s sleep together like we’re taking a nap in the countryside, surrounded by nature.”
Kate: “Grave robbers are only doing it for money, right?”
Kate: “If that’s the case, then why would they come all the way out there to dig up our graves?”
Ellis: “…That’s a great idea. I agree.”
Kate: “Really? Well then, let’s do it!”
Ellis: “Fufu, but… that’s a bit strange.”
Ellis: “We’re not married yet, we don’t have a house, we don’t have kids… we don’t have any plans for the rest of our lives.”
Ellis: “I can’t believe we’re thinking about the two of us being buried together.”
Kate: “Oh, that’s true… But if there’s a happy ending planned, doesn’t that make everything more fun?”
Ellis: “…Yeah it does.”
Ellis: “I’m looking forward to going to the grave with you more and more.”
And so, we continue to protect and accumulate happiness towards a happy ending.
Today, tomorrow, the day after, and every day after that—.
(…But, I still want something a little more reassuring.)
(If you were to ask me… ‘she’s’ the only one.)

Ellis Twilight: Chapter 4
Chapter 3
We heard a story that smelled of a kidnapping case, and we were asked to help with a performance in exchange for information––.
Kate: Alright, I'll cooperate.
Performer with Fancy Hat: Are you sure? It's not 100% guaranteed to succeed, you know?
(But the fact that he's negotiating like this means he must be confident in his success.)
However, the performance is a one-shot deal on the spot.
As he said, 100% success is impossible.
(He's testing us, saying that he'll tell us if we can entrust ourselves to him knowing that.)
(If that's the case...)
Kate: I believe in your skills.
I held back my fear and smiled brightly.
Ellis: ......
Performer with Fancy Hat: ...Ah hah hah! I see! If you say so, I have no choice but to do my best!
He firmly grasped my and Ellis's hands.
While shaking hands to seal the deal, I looked up at the sky, suppressing my desire to run away.
(I'll make it a success and get the information...!)
-
The performer, Bill, took the stage and used us skillfully to put on a show.
Bill: Please give a round of applause if the knife hits the apple on the head!
Nothing I feared happened, and the knife-throwing tricks were performed brilliantly, each time the venue was filled with applause.
And the last big trick is––.
Bill: Oh! What a thing! A magic chain has entangled the lovers!
Ellis's left hand and my right hand are tightly bound by a chain.
(What what what...!? )
Bill: Now, hold each other's hands tightly.
Ellis: ...But...
In contrast to me, who was genuinely flustered by the unexpected turn of events, Ellis smiled calmly and held my hand reassuringly.
Our fingers intertwined, and our palms pressed together perfectly.
Ellis: It's okay. ...I'll take care of it if anything happens.
Kate: Ellis....
Bill: Two people bound by a magic chain and unable to move––
Bill: When the magic cast on this chain is broken, will true love dwell between the two?
The audience was also heated up by our close contact on stage and Bill's sensational remarks.
When Bill snapped his fingers––.
(Wow...!)
The chain that was wrapped around our wrists fell to the ground––
And a beautiful lavender rose bloomed between my and Ellis's joined hands.
Ellis: Wow.
Kate: Amazing...!!
It was, of course, my first experience to have a flower suddenly bloom from my empty hand, and I was so surprised by the brilliant magic trick that I looked at Ellis and made eye contact.
Bill: Look! The flower of true love blooming between the two––!
The audience cheered.
Bill: Please give a big round of applause to the lovers who proved their love!
Spectator: Bravo!
Spectator: Propose to her!
Ellis: ...Should I?
Kate: I don't think we need to go that far...
Even after the chain was untied, Ellis continued to hold my hand...
(My cheeks are hot...)
I told myself that my pounding heart was due to the excitement of the successful performance, and I bowed deeply with Ellis, still holding hands.
After Bill's stage performance came to a successful close, we stepped down from the stage––.
Kate: Whoa...ah....
All the strength drained from my body, and I collapsed on the spot.
(M-my legs are shaking now...)
Ellis: ...Are you alright, Kate? Are you hurt anywhere?
Kate: I-I'm fine. I just let my guard down after the relief...
I placed my hand on my trembling knees and managed a smile. Ellis crouched down to my eye level, looking surprised.
Ellis: But you were so confident before we started?
Kate: Of course, I believed in Bill's skills.
Kate: And I thought even if we failed, we'd find a way to pull through...
Kate: Ah...I'm glad it's over...
I let out a sigh, releasing the fear I had been holding in.
Ellis: ......
Ellis looked at me and slowly softened his expression.
Ellis: ...You're a hard worker.
Kate: Huh? No, I'm not.
Ellis: ...Yes, you are.
Ellis: You're a wonderful person, Kate.
––I realized something.
(Ellis's words are genuine, that's why everyone adores him.)
His pure, unvarnished words reached my heart directly.
(...But I'm still not used to him being so close.)
Kate: Thank you...
I said, looking down, embarrassed to meet his eyes...
Bill: Hey, you two were amazing!
Bill, having finished his closing remarks, came running over.
Bill: You should become street performers! Especially the tall one.
Ellis: I'm glad it was a success.
Bill: How about this applause?
Hearing the whistles and applause from backstage, my cheeks naturally relaxed.
Kate: I'm happy you enjoyed it!
Bill: Right? Every time a show is successful, I think it might be the happiest moment of my life. I could die right now!
Ellis: ................
––Ellis's eyes stopped, fixed on one point.
Bill: But then I wake up after a celebratory drink and think, no, I can make it even better!
Bill: I'm going to see more of the unknown world!
Kate: Heh, that's wonderful. I'm rooting for you!
Ellis: .................
For some reason, at that moment... Ellis' profile as he looked at Bill seemed somewhat sad.
(Ellis...?)
Ellis: ...I hope you can keep feeling that way forever.
Bill: Yeah, you're right! So, your reward for your trust and cooperation was information, right?
(...! That's right, we need to ask about the kidnapping case.)
Remembering the mission, I suddenly tensed up.
Kate: Yes. Could you tell us about your friends who have gone missing?
Bill's smile faded, and he slowly opened his mouth.
Bill: Including the two who disappeared today, I've lost contact with several of my friends.
Ellis: ...When was that? Any similarities or anything you noticed?
Bill: It was at different times. Two today. Before that, one a few weeks ago, one a few months ago.
Bill: I don't know about any similarities... but I was drinking with one of them before he disappeared, and he was telling me a strange story.
Kate: A strange story...?
Bill: He said he was invited to a "circus."
(Circus...?)
Bill: He said the one who invited him was a senior performer who was very successful in the past.
Bill: The last thing he said was that he was thinking of hearing him out.
Ellis: Do you know anything about this very successful senior performer?
Bill: I heard he made a fortune with a big show about 20 years ago, but I don't know his name...
Bill didn't know any more information... We thanked him and parted ways.
-
Kate: We got a little clue, at least.
Ellis: Yeah. It was worth the effort.
Ellis smiled and gently tucked the rose that was created on stage behind my ear.
Ellis: ...Yeah, it suits you after all. You're cute.
(Ugh...)
The performance earlier might have been seen by the people in town who were talking to Ellis.
Among them, there might be people who are in love with Ellis... or people who Ellis might fall for.
(And we'll probably be working together from now on.)
(If Ellis acts like this, people around us might misunderstand.)
Kate: Ellis. You should only do that kind of thing to someone you like.
Ellis: ...What kind of thing?
Kate: Talking in close proximity, putting flowers in their hair, and saying "you're cute."
Ellis: You're not happy, Kate?
--CHOICE--
This is the kind of thing I'm talking about!
I'm happy
That's not what I meant...
-------------
Kate: That's what I'm talking about! When you say things like that, I have no choice but to honestly say "I'm happy"!
Ellis: ...I understand.
Kate: Really?
Ellis: Yes. That "happy" is your true feeling, Kate.
Hearing my reply, Ellis also smiled happily.
Ellis: ...I'll try not to do it too much if it makes you uncomfortable, Kate.
Ellis: But if I want to see you smile, I might do it again.
Ellis: If you don't like it, tell me then.
(Ellis... Ellis...)
He might be an incredible person.
Anyone would drown if they were showered with such sweet, jam-like kindness.
(I-I have to be careful... I'm sure Ellis is like this to everyone.)
(If I misunderstand and fall in love, it'll be a disaster...)
I caution myself not to take Ellis' words and actions at face value.
Kate: ...Okay. I'll be sure to tell you if that happens.
(I'm sure I'll never feel like I dislike Ellis' kindness...)
I resolve to at least not misunderstand the distance between us.
Kate: Well then... should we meet up with Jude?
Ellis: Hmm. We haven't decided on a meeting place, and I don't think he intends to meet up.
Ellis: I think he plans to share information after we return to the castle.
(He knows even though we haven't discussed it at all... That's amazing.)
(Speaking of which, the reason he's with Jude...)
(I didn't get to hear about Ellis' "request" properly.)
––Ellis works for Jude in exchange for Jude granting Ellis' request.
(So that's why they're together until then.)
I'm curious about what kind of request he made in exchange for his labor, but––.
(I'll ask him about it later.)
The kidnapping case takes priority for now.
Kate: Then, shall we return to the castle before it gets dark?
As I start to walk, a long arm extends in front of me.
Ellis: ...Before that, would you like to take a little detour?
Kate: A detour?
Ellis: This.
Ellis closes his empty hand and opens it again, revealing a beautifully designed piece of paper from his sleeve, like a magic trick.
Ellis: Actually, I asked Liam to get this for me yesterday.
Kate: ...! This is...!
It was a ticket to a play that I desperately wanted to see.
(And the date is... today!?)
Ellis: ...Shall we go?
Kate: Yes!
Ellis: ............
(Ah... I answered too eagerly.)
Kate: If you don't have anyone else you want to invite... I'd like to go.
Ellis: ...Haha. You really are a cute person.
Ellis: I got it because you said you liked theater.
Ellis: So... I want to invite you, Kate.
We talked about so many things, and unlike me, Ellis didn't even take notes.
(He remembered what I liked.)
Kate: ...Thank you.
Ellis smiled happily, just like when he was listening to the thanks from the townspeople earlier.
It wasn't exaggerated, but the sheer power of that smile captivated me once again.
(Ellis really likes to make people happy.)
Yesterday and today, I've been constantly delighted by Ellis's soft, cotton-like kindness––.
(I decided not to misunderstand the distance between us, but if I'm not careful, the emotional distance will be distorted.)
Ellis: Speaking of which, it's almost showtime.
Kate: Huh? ––You're right! We have to hurry...!
-
We run through the streets of London, heading for the theater.
My head kept telling me to stay calm, but my heart... wouldn't stop pounding, like right before the curtain rises on a stage.
Kate: Ah, that was amazing... I'm so happy right now.
Ellis: I'm glad. ...I've never seen your face so relaxed.
The time at the theater was like a dream, and as we walked along the road dyed in twilight, my heart was filled with happiness.
(I managed to complete my first mission, and I even got to see such a wonderful play.)
(All thanks to Ellis.)
(It's like a lie that I thought I might die the day before yesterday...)
Kate: Ellis, thank you so much.
Ellis: ...No, don't worry about it.
The setting sun cast its last rays of light between the buildings.
Ellis' face, with the dazzling light behind him, was a dark shadow in the backlight, making it hard to see his expression.
It was a time when light and darkness mixed, and the world seemed to be veiled, making it difficult to tell if what I saw was real.
(When I was working as a mail carrier, dusk was the hardest time to see.)
As I strained my eyes in the orange light...
Ellis: ...Hey, Kate.
Kate: Yes?
Ellis: How happy are you right now?
To the question thrown from the twilight light––I answered with a big smile.
Kate: I'm so happy that I could die right now!
Ellis: ...I see.
Ellis: Then, shall I end it for you?

Bond Stories: Ellis Twilight (1-4)
Ellis: "Hello. You want to talk to me? Sure, okay. If it'll make you happy."
Ellis: "Welcome. What shall we do today? I wonder if I could do what you want."
Ellis: "Why are you so good at making me happy? I want to make you happy, too, but it's so unfair."
Bond Story 2: What do you want to know?
Ellis: "What? You've been staring at me for a while now."
Choice 1:
Kate: "What are your hobbies?"
Ellis: "Finding good restaurants. What's your favorite food?"
Ellis: "Hmm. Then, I know a good place. Why don't we go together sometime?"
Choice 2:
Kate: “I want to ask about your curse.”
Ellis: I have the Thorns Curse. Don’t mention it in front of Roger because he’s always so gloomy when that topic comes up.”
Choice 3:
Kate: “What are your likes and dislikes?”
Ellis: "I like toast with lots of butter and cranberry jam."
Ellis: "My least favorite thing is photography."
Ellis: "Your questions are all about me. Are you that curious?"
Ellis: "Hmm. Then I'll tell you a lot more."
Ellis: "You can ask me as many questions as you like until you're satisfied, no matter how long it takes, and even throughout the night."
Ellis: "In return, tell me about you. What you're happy doing, and how happy you are right now."
Bond Story 3: Dining Together
Ellis: "How's the taste? I see. Glad to know you're happy."
Ellis: "I'm looking forward to the delicious after-dinner desserts."
Ellis: "Yeah, it's a fruit tart. But what I'm looking forward to seeing is you."
Choice 1:
Kate: "What do you mean by that?"
Ellis: "After filling your stomach and heart, you feel so happy, right?"
Choice 2:
Kate: "What are you looking forward to seeing about me?"
Ellis: "Um, your expression, I guess? I thought maybe you'd look happier after eating the dessert."
Choice 3:
Kate: "That makes me kind of nervous."
Ellis: "Don't worry about it. I just thought you would be happier."
Ellis: "Why am I glad you're happy?"
Ellis: "Because I want the person in front of me to be happy."
Ellis: "I hate seeing people sad. I really, really hate it."
Ellis: "So when you smile, I'm happy."
Bond Story 4: Special Skills
Ellis: "Whoa. I wonder if the only people who know Jude are thugs."
Ellis: "You hide in here and don't come out."
Choice 1:
Kate: "It's dangerous!"
Ellis: "It's okay. I'm pretty good at dodging and jumping around."
Choice 2:
Kate: "What are you planning to do?"
Ellis: "Eh? I'm gonna make that guy immobile. What else is there to do?"
Choice 3:
Kate: "You should hide, too."
Ellis: "..........."
Ellis: "Are you worried? Thank you. That surprised me. It's been a while since I've had someone worry about me like that."
Ellis: "It's okay. I like it, and I've never been seriously hurt before. Flitting and jumping around the city is my specialty"
Ellis: "Let's continue shopping after I take care of that guy, okay?"
Ellis: "I'll do something about it, so don't leave."
Ellis: "You were looking forward to it, so I want to do it right. Wait for me. I'll be right back."

Chapter 21
Ellis: Stay with me forever.
Ellis: I’ll never let you go again.
Kate hugs Ellis tightly in response to his words and his body flinches in pain because he's been injured, but didn't want to say anything to her in case he ruined the happy atmosphere. Kate tries to help him up, but she herself collapses due to being tied up in the casket for so long. He reassures her that it's going to be alright because help is on the way. Roger soon arrives at the scene, and after he asks if they're okay, he tells them that they look like shit. He quickly patches them up just enough to get them to a nearby infirmary (his clinic) outside of Crown Castle. Ellis is now completely pale and loses consciousness, which causes Kate to panic, but Roger says he still has a pulse, so he's just passed out.
He removes Ellis shirt which reveals a nasty wound, and Rogers speculates that a weapon covered in poison was most likely the cause of it. Roger excises the superficial necrotic skin tissue, drains as much of the poison as possible, and then disinfects the wounds (AKA an I&D or an irrigation and debridement). All they can do now is wait, so he turns his attention to Kate who he says has skin abrasions, nail lacerations, bruising and mild dehydration. While being treated by Roger, Kate keeps looking at Ellis, and he tells in a matter-of-fact way her that Crown missions always come at the risk of death, and if you're working with Jude, these situations are more frequent than this.
Roger says that he's seen the fate of those cursed by the Briar Thorn with his own eyes – which is to be destroyed by justice. He asks: It was the the prince's sword that destroyed the thorn hedge when rescuing the sleeping princess, wasn't it? Is he to be chopped up literally or metaphorically?
He decides not to muddy the waters anymore with this kind of talk, but tells her that she has to swallow reality properly and make her own choices. Kate now thinks about her future with Ellis, she loves and wants to be with him, but also knows that she must be willing to accept living with this anxiety of him possibly dying. She declares that no matter what she wants to always be with Ellis and have a happy tomorrow with him. Roger smiles and say that he knew the two would be a good fit. That night, Kate never leaves Ellis' side and falls asleep watching over him. The next morning, she feels something soft touching her lips and when she slowly wakes up she sees Ellis watching over her. He says that he was going to wait for her to wake up, but she was so cute that he thought it'd be okay to touch her a little bit, so he kissed her. His color is now back and he apologizes for making Kate worry, who in turn, tells him that she was afraid that he was going to die after all the trouble she went through to finally become lovers with him.
He smiles and says he's not going to die until he kills her, so Kate asks him what they should do because she is so happy right now? He agrees that he is just as happy as she is, wiping away tears from her eyes, and she thinks that she'd rather die right now then ever experience what they just went through. That's when she realizes that being with Ellis will also mean being next to a gaping hole of darkness, so that is why these moments are so irreplaceable and dazzling.
Ellis says he knows something that will make him even more happy, and that's going back home to the castle and sleeping not in separate beds like at the infirmary, but in the same bed. Ellis leans over her as she's lying down and kisses her when all the sudden Roger walks in (omg secondhand embarrassment), and he says that if they're well enough to do that then they are well enough to go home. When they get back to the castle the both say to each other: “I'm home”, and then they both say back to each other “Welcome back home”. AWWWW!
Chapter 22
After they get back to castle and greet each other, Roger said he's going for a beer and when Kate calls out to thank him for his help, Roger tells her to be cautious about not being too reckless with their flirting as they are still recovering. Ellis asks him how reckless is too reckless? Which embarrasses Kate, but Ellis is dead serious which makes Roger laugh, and he says not to do anything that will cause them to break their bodies. Ellis says that he's going to be nice to Kate so she doesn't feel any pain, and Roger is like: That's right, good for you lil' lady. Afterwards, Kate's chamber maid comes rushing up to them and signs to them about how terrible they look.
After Ellis and Kate are separated to take baths, it's dinner time and Kate finds a grumpy Jude in the dining room smoking a cigarette along with Alfons and Elbert. She thinks about how she doesn't know much about Elbert and she observes how every time Elbert asks if a piece of silverware or china is beautiful, Alfons has a rebuttal for it. Then, Alfons starts force feeding Elbert his dinner. The unfamiliar interaction between the two of them makes her feel tense in a way she hasn't felt before, so she asks Jude if it's okay for Elbert to be forced fed by Alfons, but the way he stares at her makes her speech falter. Of course, the grumpy fairy asks her if there isn't another question she should be asking?
Kate thinks for a moment, since Jude no doubt knew about her disappearance, and yet did not show up with Ellis to rescue her, then that means that Jude's been busy tracking down the mastermind of her abduction. This make him smugly smile and say, “Of course,” but it was difficult to do with out the help of Ellis. Alfons chimed in saying that Jude was so busy since his assistant was missing, that he worked twice as hard to research the Privy Council that released the gang.
Since Kate didn't know anything about this, Alfons explains that the Privy Council is always out to get Crown, and so she was kidnapped as part of a ploy to ensnare Crown. Ellis shows up and tells Jude that he owes him that information, and that Ellis himself was going to do a thorough investigation on the origin of her abduction. Ellis' voice was laced with a quiet anger that made a shiver run down her spine, it was as if she could smell the blood in the air. Afraid she runs to him and grabs his sleeve, he hugs her and asks if she applied medicine to her wounds, which prompts Alfons to ask with a heart-shaped hand if they're together?
Kate's face blushes red and Ellis announces that they are now together. Alfons congratulates them and Elbert says he hopes they'll be together a long time making Kate feel ticklish, but she realizes that she hasn't even said anything to Jude about it yet. So, she apologizes to Jude and Ellis for leaving the castle on her own, getting kidnapped and putting Crown at risk. Jude says that a verbal apology won't do her any good as he clicks his tongue at her while she is bowing, and he tells her that she was only, “got caught up”, in the grudge against the Crown, so there is no need to feel responsible. Kate is surprised because she was expecting Jude to say something like: You want to offer an apology, then I'll work you like a cart horse.
Just as she was thinking that, he says, “But you know, with Ellis' escort mission being abandoned, and the princess's selfish behavior. I don't really care about Crown, I just want you to pay for all you put me through. I'm going to have to work you twice as hard for all the time I missed, you're so happy you could cry, aren't you?”
Kate thinks she knew it was too good to be true, and firmly says, “Yes!”, to his request. Ellis says Jude can use him too, so Jude smiles and says, “Then let's get to it. Her Majesty the Queen has given me a direct order to kill the member of the Privy Counsel who released the rest of the gang they had locked up.”
Kate is shocked that the Queen would order the execution of a member of her own Council, and Ellis asks Jude if he can kill him with his own hands. Jude smiles and says Ellis can do whatever suits him. Kate questions Jude as to why an execution has been ordered just because she was kidnapped, and he says its because the person originally had ties with the gang, was receiving money from them (remember this was a human-trafficking case), and this person is completely black-bellied. Additionally, they're sniffing around the kidnappings case that Crown is working, as well as, being the same man who organized her abduction. The council member even put pressure on the police to overlook the incident.
With Jude's smile confirming the punishment fits the crime, Kate says no more, and afterwards she and Ellis are in his room having warm milk when their hands bump into each other when they both reach for a glass at the same time.....
Chapter 23 - MDNI
In Ellis' bedroom, their hands touch each other accidentally, and Kate thinks about how long it's been since they've been alone. She thanks him again for all his help and apologizes for making Ellis feel like he had to say they couldn't be together the last time they were alone. Ellis says that he also needs to thank Kate for caring for his heart all along, for accepting him and his abnormalities even when his parents called him a demon.
Kate says she had often wondered if she should've gone even further with Ellis, and compares her heart to the jar of raspberry jam that spilled over on the table before. Just as there was no way for it to go back in the jar once spilled, her heart could never go back to the way it was before. Ellis says that after the mission is over, they will go shopping together, buy ingredients and make jam in the kitchen together. He explains that if Kate's heart is like jam, and if they ate it together then maybe he could understand how she feels since he wants to know why she fell in love with him, what she thought of him – he wants to know everything so he can get closer to her heart and make her happy.
He takes the empty cup from her hand and asks if she's ready for bed, she thinks back to incident at the cliff side where he offers her to sleep with him so she doesn't have nightmares of being attacked by Jake, and she wonders if he means the same thing now. He hugs her tightly and says that he won't be letting her go today. Kate wonders if his secret box is finally opened up, and if she's being devoured by it? Her mind suddenly fills with unimportant things like the fact that she didn't bring a change of clothes for the next day because she thought they were only drinking warm milk together. Ellis says that even if Kate thinks it's a bad idea, he isn't going to let her go since his selfishness of making her happy takes precedence over what she thinks.
He swiftly scoops her up and takes her to the bed, which smells like sunshine and Ellis, and soon her few seconds of ease are interrupted with a shower of kisses. Soon his tongue opens her mouth causing her body to grow hotter, and after a long kiss he tells Kate that he won't finish this today. Kate is like, WHY?? He smiles and says that of course he wants to and he wants to hold her, but he wants to be careful with her body and he wants to spend time making her feel good. Kate says she wants him to feel good and finish too, but he is firm on his decision, so he pushes her down on the bed and strips her naked.
Her breasts bounce in the palms of his hands and are also loved with his tongue and lips, his fingers slide down her hips while she makes lewd sounds. Ellis smiles and thanks Kate for letting him to find all of her weak points, showing him her sweetest face, and eventually with his gentle whispers her trembling body falls into a comfortable sleep. Ellis watches a happy Kate sleeping and wishes he could look at her forever like that, that he can spoil her so much she can't live without him. Feeling such desires swirling around in his core - “In the end, you're desires are what's most important” - The unforgettable voice echoes in his head and Ellis thinks that someday Kate is going to hate him, and if that time comes....no, rather, he will fill Kate with happiness before that time comes. (Hinting he will then kill her before she grows tired and leaves him). He smiles and places his hand on her neck and thinks about that “someday”.
Soon, it is time for Jude, Ellis and Roger to carry out their mission against the man of the Privy Council having been lured out by false information planted by William, Alfons and Elbert. Kate stands at a distance from the group as she observes the mission, and Ellis wants to know why. She says that she's doing it so that she doesn't slow everyone else down. Ellis tells her that he isn't worried about that and he just doesn't want her to hate him. As Kate turns around, she says, “Hate?”
Chapter 24 - MDNI
“Hate?” Kate asks, and Ellis explains that it's different now than it was before because if he looks the man who tried to kill Kate in the eye, he may kill him in a worse way than any of the other murders she's seen him commit before, and he might make her sad. Kate thought he was concerned with her coming to a dangerous place, but he was just worried that her heart might get broken. She tells him that if Ellis loses his cool, it's okay because they will take the blame together. Kate reasons that she's the one who opened Ellis' box and if Ellis' will is mixed with the will sin, then it makes him even more sinful, so his sin is her sin too.
She tells him she is the one who wanted him to love her like that, and that she doesn't hate him. He smiles a horrifyingly sweet smile, and thanks her because he can't let her go anymore. His face changes when he hears their target walking towards them. The man from the Privy Council arrives with several guards, and asks where the woman is at since he plans to move her before Crown comes to save her, calling the Crown members monsters who need to be eradicated.
Jude cuts him off saying it was the council member who was using the gangs to capture innocent women in order to trample over them like bugs, “Look in the mirror and see which one of us is the monster.” His voice echoes in the pitch black ruins as the guards form a perimeter around the man, then a large thud entered among the guards (it was Roger jumping in the middle of them). The target tells the guards to shoot and kill them all, Roger grabs his rifle and starts firing it while Jude tells Kate she's going to help him, handing her a contraption that was ornament-like object with 'a lot of shiny tube-like things attached to it,' which makes Kate ask, “What is this?”
Jude says that she'll “Know it when you see it. If you set it on fire, he gunpowder inside will explode. Be careful not to blow it up.” But it's already on fire she says, and in a panic she throws it to the other side. When it lands there was a loud BANG due to the gunpowder igniting, making the other side go into a panic. (He gave her a live grenade LOLLLL.) Jude says that now he (Ellis) will take care of the rest, and Kate soon spots Ellis in the midst of the chaos standing behind the man of the Privy Council. He takes his black blade and slashes the man's neck and without a word the target falls to the ground. Jude joins Ellis and Roger and finishes up decimating the remaining guards causing numerous screams to echo in the darkness for a long time before silence finally settles in.
Kate debates if she should find Ellis or not since she knows he doesn't want her to see him committing his sin and making her sad, but she really wants to be near him. When she steps forward to find him she hears Roger yell, “ELLIS!!!!” Kate sees that a guard who is still alive on the ground point a gun at Ellis' back, and the fate of Ellis' tragic end – to be judged of his sin and have his sins cut down - race into her mind. Happiness is fleeting. A moment's inattention, a minor mistake can make it disappear. With out thinking she runs up to the guard and kicks his hand as hard as she could which causes a burning pain to rise in her toes, but just before that she had heard a gunshot.
She calls out to Ellis to see if he is safe, but her vision is covered with darkness and it smells good. When she looks up she sees Ellis hugging her tightly, and when she hears a noise beneath her she looks down to see the guards eyes thinly open with no light left in them, and Ellis' foot lifting from his neck. She instantly becomes confused because she has to let Ellis kill, but is this right? Ellis killed the man who was going to kill him, and she is very very happy that Ellis is alive, still it's something she has to deal with. Just as she was about to move a sharp pain from her foot makes her flinch, looking down she sees blood seeping from it possibly due to the bullet grazing her foot when she kicked the gun.
Ellis tells her that she shouldn't do anything rash, so she apologizes, but says she's glad he's safe. He gives her a hug, thanks her for keeping him safe and says he'll take care of her wounds again. He tells her that now, he'll do everything for her not just breakfast.
A few days later......he checks her wound which has healed up nicely. Fortunately, her shoe protected her from the grazing and it was only a flesh wound, so she only needed to keep off her foot for a while. When Ellis offers to assist her, Jude gripes about when he has time for that? Jude asks him about the report of their mission, and tells him to get to it so he doesn't have to tell him twice. He leaves with Jude, finishes the report, runs back to Kate and has been taking care of her ever since. Ellis helps her to bed, they say good night and he turns off the lights. She accidentally touches his leg when she has a mischievous thought, after she was injured he would only kiss or fondle her besides holding her tightly in bed, so when she looks at Ellis his lips smile nastily like he was having the same thoughts. His face draws closer.....
Premium Story - MDNI
His face draws closer and at first, he offers countless nibbling kisses, and soon his tongue creeps in sinuously, softly debauched. Kate thinks that tonight she's finally going to be able to go all the way with Ellis. For the past few days, she had been dyed by Ellis' touches, hugs and scent. She told herself that she had to be patient because she was waiting for her wound to heal, but more and more she wanted him. She moans with his kisses and he tells her that they've been kissing all day when their lips finally part. Each time one pulls away from the kiss, the other will grab them and pull them back in for more. Kate tells Ellis that she'd be lost without him, he kisses her like he his going to devour her while reaching inside her negligee and tells her he's going to undress her. He also smiles and mentions that since she isn't wearing a corset it's easier to take off. She moans when he touches her bare skin with his soft palms, “So pretty....I'm going to make it harder and harder for you to stay away from me.”
The tip of his lips kiss her nipples and soon his tongue licks them like he's licking up raspberry jam, and Kate realizes that she is trapped in this love that will kill her, but now that she knows such vivid happiness she can never go back to before she knew Ellis. He asks if she feels good, and then asks if she feels even better if he touches her “here”, his long fingers sink deeply into her wetness and without resistance her body swallows his finger up which causes a color of excitement to enter his eyes.
“It's so hot inside you, I feel like my fingers are melting.” He pumps her relentlessly and says that he's glad he has long fingers because it's easier to reach places that make her feel good. Kate can't help but mutter that she wishes Ellis can't do without her either. Ellis says that he's already at a loss without her, but he is concerned that he is going to lose control of himself and hurt her, but Kate reassures him that she wants this. He slowly enters her and asks if he's hurting her (in case you haven't guessed, baby briar is packin'), afterwards he is assured it's okay for him to do as he pleases, he starts thrusting into her and both of them are in sheer ecstasy!
Chapter 25
The one I love will kill me. That's his distorted view of love. If it were a fairy tale, some may say this is a bad ending. But in our case -
Victor tells Kate that she's kept her word, so she is free to fly away or she can stay here and he asks her what she wants to do. She closes her eyes and reflects on all the light and positive things in her life back home versus the dark and sinister things she's witnessed of those who suffer. She stares into Victor's eyes and thinks how both he and William who founded Crown must've peered in unfathomable darkness unlike the fraction of it she's experienced. She will not be able to share or open up with the things she experiences to the people she cares about, but she wants to be with Ellis, who strives for other people's happiness even to the point of getting his hands dirty.
She tells Victor that she would like to continue as a fairy tale keeper if the Queen allows it. At first, Kate thinks she'll be rejected since she got injured twice during the missions and since she put Crown in danger when she got kidnapped. Victor was surprised at first, but he openly welcomes her performing a magic trick which causes doves to fly from his hands when he opens his palm. Kate is amazed and claps her hands, while Victor bows and winks at her, he tells her that no matter what she chose he had been planning to congratulate her like this – even preparing for it all night. He asks her to let her smile illuminate those who dwell in the night even if it may be a curse on her, she thinks that his smile is filled with so much compassion for the Crown boys and her and she agrees.
After Kate leaves, Jude enters the scene saying he was going to leave when Victor had called him over and then saw him playing magic tricks. Victor tells him to wait because he called him over to discuss a proper mission, one that is an order from the Queen this time. Jude clicks his tongue when he snatches the papers that are offered to him, and says that if it's in writing then it's good enough to keep in his room. He asks Victor if he called Jude over just to listen to Kate's answer? Victor says that he is very perceptive and then tasks him with keeping Kate's smile unclouded, but Jude tells him to ask Ellis. Victor asks Jude to take care of the both of them since Ellis is their youngest member. Jude sighs and walks away making grumpy sounds, and while Victor looks up at the light through the trees, he says that he already had both of them rolled up into his pocket, that's why it was an afterthought. (This is an obvious hint about Victor. I translated this individual line, but this is pretty much what he says. I have a theory, but will keep it to myself for now.)
Kate says her goodbyes to her old co-workers as Victor has notified them she will continue working for the palace. During the evening she looks up at the twilight sky and asks herself where she is standing? It's between the day and night. Between what has been and what will be. It felt vague and uncertain, like she isn't connected to anywhere. She suddenly wants to see Ellis, but out of nowhere she is gently hugged from behind, and she immediately knows who it is because his arms wrap around her in a way she could never unravel from. As soon as she sees him the anxiety and frustration of twilight disappear and she is filled with happiness. She thought he was going to wait for her at the castle, but he said that he had a feeling that she'd miss him a little, but that he missed her a lot too. His arms hold her and confines her. He says that he was going to come for her sooner, but a florist's wagon was in trouble and he helped fix it. That sounds like him, Kate thinks as she listens to his story. He is like twilight itself, a mixture of the sinful night and the bright daylight, and she wants to be in these arms forever.
“I love you, Ellis.”
“Kate, it's twilight....”
“Hey Ellis......now is the best time.”
“I'm happy to be hugging you like this Kate, but....”
“We still have to make raspberry jam.”
Kate's heart beat fast as Ellis was looking towards tomorrow with his eyes.
He tells her that, “Someday, with the greatest happiness, he will stop time.”
“Then you'll be mine forever.”
He gently lays his lips on hers. Ellis' secret box has swallowed her whole and gently closed it's lid on her. In a box wrapped in thorns, alone together forever.
The one I love will kill me. That's his distorted view of love. If it were a fairy tale, some may say this is a bad ending. But in our case......One day that day will come and it will be the happiest ending.
