Leonor stood in the flickering candlelight, her gaze meeting Elliott's with a mixture of familiarity and caution. His words echoed in the quiet of the underground map room, resonating with their shared history and unspoken tensions. "Elliott," she began softly, her voice carrying a weight of understanding. "You know well enough that 'boring, perfunctory words' have never been my style." Her tone held a hint of playful defiance, a subtle acknowledgment of their habitual banter. "But I won't indulge in empty platitudes either, not with you." She spoke, walking closer to where he stood looking at the world map. If what he needed from her was entertainment, she could at least grant him that.
Her eyes lingered on his, searching for the depths beneath his challenging demeanor. "If I could go anywhere," she mused, her voice taking on a thoughtful cadence, "Puerto Rico, I would find myself amidst the vibrant streets of San Juan, alive with the rhythms of Spanish colonial life. The city would be bustling with merchants from across the Atlantic, exchanging goods and stories under the watchful eye of El Morro." Her gaze drifted, as if envisioning the scene before her. "I would visit La Fortaleza," she continued, speaking of the majestic governor's mansion overlooking the bay. "Perhaps sit in its gardens, amidst the fragrant flowers and the shade of centuries-old trees, contemplating how life would be...."
Her voice softened with a sense of reverence for the countries history. "I would venture into the heart of the countryside," she added, imagining the rustic charm of sugar plantations and haciendas where life unfolded at a slower pace. "To witness the lives of those whose labor sustains this land, learn how to cultivate coffee, sugar cane even learn how to make rum-" She bit her lower lip; a part of her felt like she might be boring him with her rambling. Yet, her response carried a touch of wistfulness, hinting at desires and dreams beyond the political turmoil that enveloped them both. "And you, Elliott," she asked gently, her gaze steady, "where would you find yourself, if not here among these maps and memories?"
He feels her before he sees her. Attunely aware even in his state; rebellious, combative, and warm with nips of liquor. Gone are the first few days of ceremonial drunkenness, replaced instead with the energy to conquer. That's how he finds himself in the underground map room. Or so he says, as he glances about the historic maps with hollow interest. "Leonor." He answers back, a levelled quietness. Their fights are that of blazing glory. But that is not the only tune they play. And this? The quiet, soft hum of deep understanding? It is a powerhouse, just as well. "Don't." He says with a sigh. "Don't bore me with boring, perfunctory words like that. I've had my fill from arse-kissers and sycophants." He rolls his eyes, visibly irate. For better or worse, Leonor's company is the singular one void of artifice.
"Say something real." Elliott asks, a quiet plea in the privacy of the underground. Meeting her dark eyes, glancing at the swell of her lips. There is a plea in there somewhere. "Entertain me." He adds. "It shall mean more to me than sharing in tedious sorrow." Flickering his eyes down to the map in hand, fingers circling around their home. He taps at the rim of the map in thought. "Where would you go if you could go anywhere?"

Excerpt from this story from Grist:
Government action to slash greenhouse gas emissions fell short in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia during the decade after they mandated their first targets. But as policymakers in Cascadia failed, its activists triumphed.
Against the odds, and even their own expectations, activists blocked nearly every effort to use the region’s ports to expand the global fossil fuel trade between 2004 and 2017, according to research by InvestigateWest. Industry wanted to turn the Pacific Northwest into a fossil fuel export hub. Instead, environmentalists assembled coalitions that shut down or brought to a near-standstill proposals that, taken together, would have punched the carbon equivalent of five Keystone XL pipelines through Cascadia and its ports, according to research by the Seattle-based think tank Sightline Institute. Just last week, the owners of a proposed coal-export terminal in Longview, Washington, known as the Millennium Bulk Terminal, pulled the plug on the project.
Green groups saw success in fighting fuel-export proposals along the Pacific coast because they successfully enlisted non-traditional allies. And also because they put a lot of calories into figuring out how coal and oil were set to be physically exported. And then enlisting those communities at risk.
They targeted the underground pipelines snaking beneath communities. And the mile-long-plus trains rumbling through downtowns, cutting off emergency service vehicles and all other traffic numerous times daily. And the fuel processing plants that spew pollution into the air of often marginalized communities — all en route to impacting a warming planet.
Regional factors also played a role. Native American tribes and First Nations bands invoked their sovereign powers to muscle political power. And Cascadia’s liberal leanings and economic makeup eased the lift politically. Fossil fuel production makes up a small part of the region’s job base, and many politicians score with voters by opposing the likes of Big Oil. (Then-Seattle City Council member Mike O’Brien, once dubbed the city’s Most Divisive Man, had nothing to lose when he paddled into Seattle’s Elliott Bay to block a Shell drilling platform bound for the Arctic. O’Brien numbered among dozens of “kayaktivists” arrested that June, three months before the oil major shelved its Arctic drilling plans.)
The most important factor, though, was the sheer number of people that activists mobilized by reaching beyond their traditional alliances. In massive numbers, community members attended public hearings. Marched in protests. Spent nights and weekends at kitchen tables drafting pleas to government agencies.

hi beautiful! so glad you’re feeling better! you’re awesome!!! hoping for some seattle recs I’m going for the first time w my boyfriend soon!! we’re from the midwest.
Sure!! A lil updated list of places I’ve enjoyed recently:
Downtown: The doughnut stand in Pike Place (enter on the tunnel side to the left of the main entrance on 1st and pike, by the newspaper stand and La Vaca) is amazing. get the dozen mixed flavor doughnuts. La Vaca is a literal hole in the wall burrito place right by the doughnut stand and it’s awesome. Moorea Seal is a cute store, I’ve never actually been in but I used to do their books and they’re close to Pike Place. Saffron Spice food truck which is by Bezos’ Balls from 12-2 PM M-F.
Belltown: Neon Boots always, Jupiter if you like pinball, Oaxaca Cantina for their “Summer Smash” which is an entire avocado fried into a tortilla, Design Within Reach, Biscuit Bitch
Queen Anne: The Space Needle is not overrated but $$ to go up. Kerry Park is still the best view of the city. How To Cook A Wolf is a+ fancy dinner.
Pioneer Square: Drygoods is the best fabric/notion store in the city. The Underground Tour is cheap and amazing and worth it. So many good antique stores. Copal has great vegan tacos.
Capitol Hill: Manao is great thai street food. Sizzle Pie is good vegan pizza. Foreign National is a really cute speakeasy style bar. There’s a Slayer themed vegan hot dog stand that is usually outside of Montana on Friday and Saturday nights. Analog Coffee is cute good coffee. Lost Lake is a good 24 hour diner (go during happy hour tho bc you can get a $15 vegan burger for $6), Oddfellows is great for brunch (if it’s nice out ask to be seated on the patio), Elliott Bay Books is a great bookstore, Guy Fieri signed the wall at Bok A Bok if you like fried chicken.
U District: Thai Thom is great but get there early or at a weird time because there’s always a huge wait, Goodfork is a good vegan/local restaurant, Flowers is a cute bar in an old flower shop, Cafe Racer is weird as hell and really fun - it’s a coffee shop, then they have brunch, lunch, dinner, then it turns into a bar at night. Sit in the upstairs area. Walk around UW Campus and go in Suzzallo to the silent reading room.
Wallingford: Octopus Bar is fun and has good flatbread pizza, The Meridian School has alien encounter support groups and is fun to just walk around, the best Rancho Bravo is here imo although you can also go to one in Cap Hill or the U District
Ballard: Bastille is a cute French bistro bar (get the French 75), Percy’s is a great bar with lots of plants and exposed brick walls, the Buffalo Exchange here is the best one in the city, Prism is a cute local/sustainable shop, Hattie’s Hat is a great super super old diner and dive bar

Emma recommends Hawkeye by Matt Friction. It's Buffy meets Veronica Mars. Which apparently is listed on Emma's shelf talker. But, like, who reads those?
Desert Island Pick
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Emma hasn't finished The Secret Garden, but The Little Princess might be Emma's Desert Island pick. That said, she hearts Mandy by Julie Andrews, which is kinda the same thing, so that counts, right?
Station Eleven Picks
Practical: anything from the Did you Know shelf, such as How to Stay Alive in the Woods: A Complete Guide to Food, Shelter and Self-Preservation Anywhere by Bradford Angier
Political: Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard
Wild Pick
The Amazing Adventures of a Nobody and The Kindness Diaries: One Man's Quest to Ignite Goodwill and Transform Lives Around the World by Leon Logothetis
Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama
Bookseller Confession
Holland hated Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff and The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney. Also, she never read Catcher in the Rye, which both Kim and Emma are totally okay with. Emma says you should skip Catcher and read Franny and Zooey.
Shout out to a bookseller who has actually read Harry Potter.
Go-To Handsell
Best book Holland has read since she opened the bookstore (whoa): The One-In-A-Million Boy by Monica Wood
Kids of Appetite by David Arnold (if you liked Outsiders, read this)
Go-To Picture Books:
Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast by John Funk, illustrated by Brendan Kearney
Interstellar Cinderella by Deborah Underwood, illustrated by Meg Hunt
Impossible Handsell
Good Luck of Right Now by Matthew Quick (author of Silver Linings Playbook and The Reason You're Alive)
FYI: Emma's really into Richard Gere.

Camping Trip || July 18th - July 29th, 2018
Posted on the boards of both of the Explorer’s Guilds are notices about a special event available for every citizens on the islands. It’s a camping trip, with supplies and transportation provided by the Explorer’s Guild! The guild believes that this trip will help potential voyagers with their survival skills, possibly encourage people to go on their own independent voyage, and help people of the islands to get to know each other. And due to the success of the first camping trip last year, they’ve decided to hold it for another year!
While last year, this trip took place on Forest Haven, the guild has decided to be a little more daring this year. Several scouts have personally gone out to the sea to find the perfect venue for a good camping trip, and have found an island rife with ruins, mystery, and even more. They have declared it Fenith Island.
The camping trip lasts roughly three days, with participants arriving in the evening of the first day, spending the night, spending one entire day on the island, spending another night in, and then leaving the next afternoon. There will be a special area set up by the shore that wards off monsters for the participants to make up camp! Participants are allowed to bring their weapon and one small backpack of their essentials. All food and camping supplies will be provided by the guild.
Since this island is recently discovered and you may find dangerous things lying in wait outside of the designated safe zone, each camper will be given a two-charmed necklace! This is a silver-chained necklace with two distinct charms on it: a white circle and a red square. The red square protects against a normally killing blow, absorbing whatever would have killed you. The red square can only be used once, and will shatter into dust when it has been activated (and, of course, it doesn’t work at all if you’re not wearing it). The white circle is meant to be a distress signal. If you press your thumb into the white circle, then it will send a signal to the closest campers to your location, making their white circles flash red. The circles will then act as a compass that brings you to the camper in distress.
Citizens of either island can sign up to be randomized into a 2-3 person tent! At the beginning of the event, these random pairings will be announced! Let’s hope that you don’t end up with someone who snores…
The deadline to sign up for the camping trip is July 17th at 10PM EST:

There will be three main events you can participate in during this camping trip! And unlike other events, all threads made during this event must be completed before the end of the event. So keep that in mind as you’re going off on your shenanigans!
You may also Discord thread or Tumblr thread in groups outside of the three main events. However, all threads done in this manner also must be completed, or at least must end, before the end of the event.
FIRESIDE CHAT
In the center of the safe area on Fenith Island is a large, magical bonfire that will be ablaze all night. The bonfire itself produces whatever ward is used to keep the monsters at bay, so it’s been made extra strong so that it won’t go out! Along with this bonfire, the is plenty of food to procure in this center area, and there’s even a cool little radio playing music!
This will be the scenario for the Fireside Chat, which will be the group Discord channel of the event! Campers are free to mingle with whoever else wanders into the center area, between whatever else they are doing during this trip!
TENT SHENANIGANS
Since all of the tents will be assigned randomly, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know your tent-mates during the trip. You can decide where to set up your tent and get to know everyone else! Remember to keep your tent in the safe zone to avoid monster encounters!
Unfortunately, while the Explorer’s Guild attempts to be as perfect as possible, there is a possibility that there may be an issue with your group’s supplies. When your groups are matched up, roll to see if something has unfortunately happened to your tent group:
t!choose nothing | bags | tent | animals | BEAR
NOTHING means that nothing bad has happened! BAGS means that your group is missing one sleeping bag! TENT means that the tent is faulty and can’t be set up! ANIMALS means that some harmless forest creatures have somehow stolen the participant’s personal bags! Finally…BEAR means that once the group has set up their tent and left for a while, they’ll come back to find that a bear has taken up residence in their tent. Unfortunately, the magic fire does not repel bears. Only monsters. Go punch that bear.
FENITH ISLAND EXPEDITION
Fenith Island is a newly discovered island, and the voyagers who found it didn’t do anything aside from take a cursory glance at it. So, the Explorer’s Guild has decided to put out suitable rewards for going out and finding out what the island used to be.
By going out in teams of 2-4 people...or if you would rather journey out alone...you may find certain artifacts and items of interest around Fenith Island while on expeditions. These artifacts can either be kept by a member of your team...or handed over to the Explorer’s Guild at the end of the trip for 15,000G. Regardless, once you find an artifact, it will be in your possession for the remainder of the camping trip, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
Artifacts and Items of Interest can be found by journeying outside of the safe zone on an expedition of 1-4 campers. There are several points of interest that you may encounter while you’re out there. The Sea Cave, the Town Ruins, the Dragon Shrine, and the Underground Tunnels. While you’re free to explore each of the locations at your own leisure when you’re outside of an expedition, these locations hold secrets that are only found on expeditions.
The Sea Cave is a large cave found by the northern shore of the island. It’s a rather large cave dug into the island itself with a long river of sea water cutting through it. There are several offshoot caves leading out from this one, each with monsters lurking inside.
The Town Ruins are the ruins of a small town that once resided on Fenith Island. It appears to be just an average town dated at least two hundred years ago. There doesn’t seem to be any monsters taking up residence in this area. Maybe some friendly wildlife just lives here!
The Dragon Shrine is a small shrine located high in the island’s lone mountain, onlooking the rest of the island. The view honestly can’t be beat! There is an altar to pray at, a small shrine to visit and look around in, and a breathtaking view to take in! There are a few monsters roaming around on the path to the shrine, so take caution!
The Underground Tunnels are a massive network of caves beneath the surface of the island. However...finding an entrance is nearly impossible. But falling down a hole into the tunnels is easy! If you find the tunnels, it’s probably because you fell down a hole into them. And finding a way out will be tricky. There are many monsters down in this area, so be prepared!
Each character may only go on one expedition for the camping trip. Campers are free to explore all areas outside of their expedition and get into their own trouble, but cannot find an artifact or item of interest without being given an expedition prompt.
Once you have gathered your expedition party - or decided to journey out alone - roll a number from 1 to 20 in a designated Discord channel! Tag a moderator once you get your number to get your expedition prompt.
There are twenty different artifacts to find on Fenith Island. Each artifact has its own expedition prompt to go with it. They will have their own unique events that involve the artifact or item of interest in some way! As such, once a number has been drawn, it cannot be drawn again. So if a team draws 20, then all future expeditions must re-roll if they draw 20.
Content Warning: All expeditions are considered Level One on a voyage scale, which means that anything you see on these expeditions are something you would reasonably see in a Rune Factory game. Nothing intense this time, folks!
Please note that if you want to push the boundaries content-level wise of your expedition (ex. explicit descriptions of injuries, going ham on horror-related genre stuff, writing in some extra details that may not be RF friendly, or anything else comparable) you must get explicit permission from all other expedition members involved before you write it. If your expedition members are uncomfortable with these subjects, then leave that shit at home, son.
If you choose to get into teams and roll for your number before the event actually begins, that is completely fine! We’ll make a note of it and post it once the event begins!

Book Review: Meet Cute
Meet Cute
edited by Jennifer L. Armentrout
This book stands up to it's title, because it's really, really cute. REALLY CUTE. I can't get over how cute it is.
Also, in the name of total honestly, I didn't actually know the term "meet cute" before I started this book, so I finished the first few stories and was like WHAT THE HECK, IT JUST STOPS? AS THEY MEET? and then I googled what a meet cute was...and yeah. Makes sense. (also, the name of the butcher in iZombie makes SO MUCH more sense now)
So, the basic gist of this book is that it's a whole bunch of teenagers, meeting their love interests; but only their first meeting. Their meet cutes. And they were CUTE. These are little tiny snippets of the beginnings of relationships, and they varied from romcom romantic to friends to lovers.
The stories were wonderfully inclusive, too, which is fantastic (not all white cishet stories!), and I don't think there was one story that I didn't enjoy. Some did fall a bit more flat than others, and of course I have my favorites, like the one about two girls meeting during a layover in an airport, but this is easily the best anthology I've read. Anthologies and I don't really get along because I tend to only like two or three out of a dozen or so stories, but this anthology is a solid, thoroughly enjoyable one.
4/5 stars

COVID-19 roundup: no new cases reported locally for third straight day
The COVID-19 case number in Grey-Bruce remains at 99 as no new cases of the disease were reported in Tuesday’s daily situation report released by the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
Eighty-eight cases have now recovered leaving 10 active cases reported in the region, none of which are currently hospitalized.
No deaths have been attributed to the disease locally and there are no local long-term care or retirement homes with a declared COVID-19 outbreak.
Owen Sound remains the municipality with the highest prevalence of reported cases at 47, followed by Southgate at 12.

The 158th Owen Sound Emancipation Festival is going digital amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Normally a three-day festival, which was traditionally a homecoming of sorts for the descendants of those who escaped to the area through the Underground Railroad, will take on a new look this year.
Organizers are currently raising funds through grants and donations and are in the process of preparing a program to modify the event for online audiences.
The Emancipation Festival was established in 1862, when Owen Sound and area residents held the first Owen Sound Emancipation Celebration Picnic to commemorate the British Commonwealth Emancipation Act of Aug. 1, 1834. The event grew to include the United States Emancipation Proclamation that followed on Jan. 1, 1863.
It includes the longest-running emancipation picnic in North America, held each year on Aug. 1.

The Town of Saugeen Shores is encouraging local shoppers to follow the advice of public health officials and wear a cloth or similar non-medical face mask when entering local retail settings.
The Town made the announcement on their Facebook page Tuesday alongside a picture of mask-wearing councillors taking part in a Zoom online conference.
According to the message, businesses across the community have been voicing concerns that some members of the public are not wearing masks while visiting their stores.
During a webinar last week with regional business leaders and the general business community, Dr. Ian Arra stressed that ensuring physical distancing was the highest priority in modifying business operations in preparation for reopening.
Some stores in Ontario have made wearing a mask mandatory. Recently, the CEO of Longo’s grocery stores announced they would not permit shoppers to enter their stores without a mask.

Ontario’s health minister said the province is heading in a “very promising” direction after 230 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Tuesday.
The increase brings the province-wide tally of the disease to 31,090.
“Most days there are now more resolved than new daily cases of COVID-19, meaning fewer active cases of people with the virus,” Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a tweet. “Today, with 337 more resolved and 230 new cases, there are now 107 fewer active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, an important downward trend.”
The province announced Tuesday that child care centres would reopen June 26 with strict protocols in place to allow parents to return to work.
Children and staff will be in groups of 10 or less and be screened prior to entry.
Encouraging numbers at hospitals are also trending downward. Province-wide, there are 600 people in the hospital battling COVID-19, 116 of those in intensive care, and 88 on ventilators.
Over 65 per cent of all reported COVID-19 cases have been in the GTA, which remains in Stage 1 of the province’s economic reopening while other regions plan to move to Stage 2 later this week.
