The west-facing glasshouse runs along a warm edge of the walled garden and was designed 12 years ago by Foster and Pearson who manufacture glasshouses to original Victorian designs and specifications. (They built the glasshouses at both the Chelsea Physic Garden and West Dean College in Chichester.) “It looks like it has been here forever,” Polly notes.

a slasher movie AU for The Passenger (2023)

Elliot Sheppard, a third-grade teacher at Central Elementary, abused children for many years before being exposed and taking his own life. Now, twenty years later, the school is being demolished, and something has awakened.... Strap in for the cruelest summer on record.

An homage to classic slasher movies with a summer romance flair.

School lets out early that year.  

The kids don’t question it, no matter how many times they catch the adults cutting conversations short when they walk in the room.  You don’t look too hard at a gift like that, four extra days of blue sky and no schedule.  

The school makes a statement that says everything and nothing, tries to keep the details vague, but word spreads anyway like kudzu.  The parents sit and fret, cancel camps, extend family vacations.  Stand in the hallways late at night and peer through cracked bedroom doors and swallow their dread down whole and kicking.  Read statistics.  Count their blessings.  

It’s a weird summer, gets off on a weird foot, like trying to hopscotch wrong-foot-forward.  

It’s early Monday morning, too early for teachers to arrive yet.  The schedule change allows extra time to tear down posters, enter the final few grades.  Nobody’s in a rush, though, to sit alone in the empty classrooms.  To sit in the silence of that building and let imagination run wild.  To be there, in the place where it happened.  In proximity to the unthinkable, guilty by association.  By ignorance.  By inaction.  

Elliot Sheppard has been missing for three days.  

The playground for the younger grades sits on the east side of the school at the base of the hill.  The kids call it the Little Toy, relative to the Big Toy, which is on the other side of the building and reserved for the older grades.  Weeds have already started their seasonal conquest, bursting up at the edge of the wood chips and in the shade of the slide.  The foursquare courts need repainting.  A kickball sits half-deflated in the grass at the bottom of the hill.  

The lonesome call of a mourning dove trembles over the dew.  The sun stretches its arms over the lowlands, rosy and resplendent.  In the pale dawn light, blood drips black onto the wood chips.  The gun sits mere inches from the thick-fingered hand that dropped it.  Very little of the man remains above the bridge of his nose, mouth rent asunder, a tooth fairy’s bounty.  Flies already swarm around the pale blue sinkholes of his eyes.  

He will be found in less than an hour by the secretary who bid him good morning every day since she started at Central.  The police will identify him immediately and do their damnedest to keep these details out of the media too, in the name of protecting privacy, protecting dignity.  In an effort to shelter the soft and innocent from the uglier parts of life.  

This time, at least, they might succeed.

The mid-2000s saw a dramatic shift in television. The rise of "prestige TV," fostered by cable networks like FX and HBO, saw complex narratives led by morally gray characters like Walter White in Breaking Bad, Vic Mackey in The Shield, Don Draper in Mad Men, and the list goes on. Most of these shows were also high concept. Game of Thrones flipped the script on what people expected from fantasy, while Lost hooked viewers with an island full of mysteries. But not every TV show followed these edicts. One series, Leverage, went against every established rule of "Prestige TV" - and though it's not as well remembered as these series, it still has its fans.

Leverage features Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton), an insurance investigator, who is devastated when his son succumbs to a terminal illness that could have been prevented if the company he'd worked for didn't refuse experimental treatment. Nate joins a group of thieves consisting of genius hacker Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge), skilled fighter Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane), sophisticated grifter Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman), and antisocial thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf). The group conducts a series of heists, but only against those who take advantage of the innocent.

‘Leverage’ Was an Entertaining Watch Due to Its Structure & Cast Interactions Nate (Timothy Hutton), Sophie (Gina Bellman), Parker (Beth Reisgaf), Elliot (Christian Kane), and Hardison (Aldis Hodge) in a row dressed as FBI agents smiling as they take green containers away in Leverage Part of the fun of watching Leverage is seeing how Nate's team pulls off their heists, and the show doesn't disappoint on that front. An episode of Leverage usually begins with the team getting to know their mark. Then they apply their specialized skills. Toward the end of the episode, flashbacks reveal how everything fits together. It's a structure often used in heist films, but in Leverage it is often executed hilariously. Take Season 3's "The Rashomon Job." True to the Akira Kurosawa film it's named after, each member of Nate's team recounts how they tried to steal a priceless artifact before they became a team. It's funny, action-packed, and shows each character at their best.

Leverage has one of the most dynamic ensembles in television history. Hardison and Parker end up slowly developing a relationship. Though the dangerous nature of their job (and her slowly developing social skills) impedes things, they end up together. Sophie struggles with an identity crisis, as her true passion is acting, but her acting prowess is only great when pulling off a con. Spencer seeks to redeem himself after committing some dark acts in his past. Leverage was willing to let its characters grow in ways other shows wouldn't, making it stand out.

The Final Three Seasons of ‘Leverage’ Shook Up the Show ​​​​​​Keeping in line with the escalating nature of the heist genre, the final three seasons of Leverage raise the stakes for its crew. Season 3 sees Nate imprisoned and the team falling under the guidance of a mysterious woman called "The Italian" (Elisabetta Canalis), who blackmails them into taking down criminal bankroller Damien Moreau (Goran Višnjić). Season 4 would see them encountering Jack Latimer (Leon Rippy), who offers to hire them, but is working really for Victor Dubenich (Saul Rubinek), who Nate's team took down in their first con together.

But Season 5 featured the biggest shakeup: Nate leaving the team after proposing to Sophie and placing Parker in charge. The series finale, "The Good Bye Job," breaks from tradition by having Nate seemingly captured and having to recall his team dying. In reality, he tricked his old enemy/ally Jim Sterling (Mark Sheppard) into thinking his team was dead, getting access to a hard drive called "The Black Book." It was the kind of con Leverage was built on, and it was only fitting for the series to end on the biggest caper yet.

The Legacy of ‘Leverage’ Continues in ‘Leverage: Redemption’

Leverage eventually continued in the new age of streaming television, thanks to Amazon's Freevee channel. Leverage: Redemption follows Parker, Spencer, and Hardison as they reunite with Sophie after Nate's death. Taking over Nate's role as "The Mastermind," Sophie leads the team in heists against the corrupt. Redemption once again shook things up with two new characters: Hardison's foster sister Breanna (Aleyse Shannon), a genius hacker in her own right, and former corporate lawyer Harry Wilson (Noah Wyle), who seeks redemption for his past.

Redemption manages to succeed where most revivals fail by keeping most of the cast intact and using the same mission statement. That's due to producer Dean Devlin and creators John Rogers & Chris Downey having an active hand in the creative process. Devlin even had a specific vision in mind for Leverage:

I just wanted to do the type of show that I grew up with and loved. I missed Mission: Impossible and The Rockford Files. Television today tends to be more dry, dark and edgy. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s not the type of show I was interested in. So when TNT said they wanted to get a TV show out of me, I said I wanted to do a throwback type of show. I wanted to have fun. I don’t want to live in a dark world.

Even if Leverage didn't enjoy the explosion in success that Breaking Bad or Mad Men did, Devlin deserves credit for sticking to his guns & turning out some great television.

What gets me is that Elliot doesnt remember Benson but the second Benson saw him his whole demeanour changes. Tells me Elliot had a long list of victims and they're all interchangeable in his memory. Breaks my heart how Benson in the 3rd act has lost all his swagger and machismo he had in the 1st and 2nd.

REAL REAL REAL!!!!! Its my favorite part of rewatching, because the physical acting in the movie is unreal. Seeing Benson's entire posture shift, how he speaks changes, for a moment he looks like a scared child, and then he tries to gather himself back up, keep the mask on... But after that he cant keep it on at all. He slips up over and over and over ;n;

Its an important shift tbh because we see that it *is* all an act, the swagger, the confidence, the control. He's been scared since he shot up the Burger joint, but he couldn't let himself face that. And it took seeing Sheppard to shatter every mask he tried to conceal himself under because it was a gut punch. In a day full of trying to adapt to the moment, he couldn't adapt to that. And who of us can?

@lindzdevine Wales Comic Con... absolutely chaotic, but it was worth meeting the man. I have to say Jared was amazing. The con completely overbooked him, and he was supposed to have left the building at 6:15pm, and yet he was still there signing prepaid autographs past 7pm (the only one still doing autos)... he thought I had bought the drawing and when I said I had drawn it, he was amazed, replied with "wow its fkin incredible" and then admired it holding it up joking "how he wished he looked like that now". For once, I was holding back the happy tears in front of him.

He is just beautiful. And smelt amazing, despite being so sweaty bless him. But I'm sure we fans don't mind a sweaty Jared, right?! 😍😉

Also met Mark Sheppard, and I even got to get a pay on the day auto with Gen whilst waiting for Jared's. She was beautiful and amazing. We had a good 10 minute chat and told her I was new to the fandom, where I was at, which was why she wrote what she did.

And saw Samantha and Mark in the panel. They had booked so much for Gen and especially Jared, they couldn't make it due to Jared's still stuck in photos. 

Maybe Jared just sweats cologne? LOL!

OC ASKS: If your OCs celebrate Christmas, what present would be at the top of their wish list?

I haven't actually sat down and thought about which OCs might celebrate Christmas and which ones might not. But I think Christmas is a pretty popular holiday and, for the sake of the question, I'll answer this for everyone.

I'm excluding Noka, because Christmas isn't a thing in ATLA, and Evelyn because I can't imagine her evil ass celebrating the holidays. Apollina also isn’t included because she doesn’t tend to partake in human holidays.

Alexandra Thorne

Alex hates asking for presents because she secretly feels bad about people spending money on her. However, after much convincing from Jakob, I think she would attempt to make a wish list. She puts a new set of throwing knives at the top of her list. Jakob buys her the knives and a new holster to match.

Jakob Burnouf

Jakob loves the holiday season, but he really never expects anybody to buy him things. There just aren't enough people in his life that would know him well enough to do that. Regardless, he does make a wish list and puts an expensive magic trick set at the top. Alex buys it for him and he cries.

Penelope Sheppard

Penny tries to ask for small gifts because she really doesn't want the whole gift-giving process to be stressful for anyone. She would much rather give gifts, but Barry refuses to let the holidays pass without getting her something. To appease him, she asks for a new journal. He buys her five.

Adeline Ronan

Addie always celebrates the holidays with her family and they always make a big deal out of everyone making their wish lists. She tries to keep her requests simple, never one to ask for too much. She asks her family for new dragon scales and her friends for a new, fuzzy sweater.

Elliot Ronan

Elliot is not nearly as excited for the holidays as his cousin is, but he likes to see her happy so he always follows along. He always makes a joke list with things on it like “the Hogwarts castle,” but Addie always gets a real list out of him. At the top of his list is a brand-new broom for Quidditch.

Jessica Moreno

Jessica stays at Hogwarts for the holidays because her relationship with her family is pretty tense. She makes a wish list of gifts, but she doesn’t expect anybody to actually buy anything for her. She puts a necklace at the top of her wish list, something small and silver with a little yellow gemstone.

Abigail Rogers

Abby is fascinated by the holidays and celebrating all these things surrounded by your loved ones. Steve always encourages her to make a wish list and ensures that she always gets something nice as a gift. The first thing she would ask for is a new cellphone so she can finally fit in.

Beatrice Velasquez

Bea celebrates the holidays alone with her thoughts until she meets Matt. They always spend the holidays together and Bea loves both giving and receiving gifts. She tries to ask for things that will end up being useful, so a new bottle of perfume would probably sit at the top of her list.

Leah O’Conner

Leah moves around so much that she never really expects anybody to celebrate the holidays with her or buy her a gift of any kind. Her social worker has her make a list every year though - something about being optimistic - and Leah puts a new white cane at the top of her wish list.

Artemas enjoys the human holidays and she celebrates them happily when she’s with Druig. When they get together, he always pesters her for a list of gifts she wants because he really wants her to experience the holidays in full. She says time with him is a gift, he complains, she asks for a new quiver.

Betony Pendragon

Betony hates the holidays because of all the fanfare her father insists upon. There are the royal celebrations and the hundreds of nobles she needs to attend to. She much prefers celebrating alone with her brother and exchanging gifts with him. At the top of her list, she asks for a sword. 

Eilwen

Eilwen truly celebrates the holidays for the first time when Merlin and Gaius take her in. It’s always a small celebration just among themselves, but she enjoys the festivities. She doesn’t always understand gift giving or why people want to give her things, but she does ask for a new dress.

Elena Hargreeves

Elena enjoys the holidays, but she misses the days she could celebrate them with her siblings. As terrible as life at the Academy was, she loves her siblings and wishes she could spend time with them. Still, she swaps gifts with her small group of friends and asks for a big, fuzzy blanket.

Mollie Fitzpatrick

Mollie loves celebrating the holidays with Diego, the big grouch who claims he hates it all. She knows he’s lying, and the big smile on his face every time they decorate cookies together is gift enough for her. god so much of it is just that he goes from holding everything back to being as impulsive as possible and then deeply triggered within the span of probably less than seven hours. especially when looking at how he talks about elliot sheppard and how that contradicts what hes said in his general ramblings - being fucked up to ms beard as soon as sheppards involved despite maintaining politeness before, telling randy he'll kill him for asking, honestly even the fact that he interrupted his weird little fairy godmother plan in the first place.

for one day, every opinion he has now has to revolve around what he thinks will fix randy, and what he thinks will soothe his anger from his past. and amazingly thats a Bad moral standpoint to have going on!

and when you already have a mixed bag of beliefs that are very clearly rooted in personal experience or otherwise biased places (the virginity conversation is still so funny to me what even was that) then its even worse!!

what is important to me in the inevitable softboyifying of benson is that he is not actually all there politically. like. yes, he points out that malls are part of corporate greed. yes, he targets his shitty manager and a homophobic dickhead. yes he hates cops. BUT look at him. he insinuates unkind things about a black woman who is just trying to do her job and shoots her in the leg for calling him out on it. he pokes fun at mrs. beard's disability before threatening her life too. he expresses insane opinions and false stats about teen celibacy. i love this guy and he clearly has "stick it to the man" type of values. but also he's fucking nuts. please do not depict him as a paragon of virtuous opinions after watching the movie where he fucking shoots and threatens a bunch of people including random innocent cashiers and shit. i will go insane
