JULY RAINBOW CRATE SPOILERS
I am most excited about the indie from this month's box. However, I am such a sucker for space mysteries!
This box includes:
• trad pick: Stars, Hide Your Fires by Jessica Mary Best with dust jacket art by @tatchianamichaela
• indie pick: Prince and Assassin by Tavia Lark with dust jacket art by @luposlipaphobya, foiled hardcase by @jamielynnlano , and endpapers and printed edges by @/writingrosereads (insta), bonus story, bound-in author letter, and signed art bookplate
• monthly collectible magnet inspired by Beating Heart Baby by Lio Min
• glass water bottle inspired by Venom & Vow by Anna-Marie & Elliot McLemore
• spoiler card art print inspired by the trad pick of the month
Will I get to either of these books soon? Probably not, but I'm slowly making my way through the backlog of RC books on my shelf one audiobook at a time.

hi! gay uncle book shopping for my trans nephew, he's 17 now so he's moving more toward adult fiction, he likes lyrical and slightly tragic books, he loved Song of Achilles, is reading Call Me By Your Name (and enjoying it) I was thinking about getting him House of Impossible Beauties and Dayspring, but I'd love some recommendations of books in that vain, adult, new adult or robust YA with a poetic writing style and maybe a little sad/tragic, bonus points if it has a transmasc main/major character because its always hard to find good books with trans male characters
The best uncles are book shopping uncles! In YA I really love Beating Heart Baby by Lio Min, which definitely has some sadness and a transmasc main character (and lovely writing). Another great one with a transmasc lead is Man O’War by Cory McCarthy; highly recommend. And one of YA’s most gorgeous writers, in my opinion but also many award committees’, Anna-Marie McLemore, has three books with trans boy leads: When the Moon Was Ours (m/f magical realism), Self-Made Boys (a historical t4t m/m Gatsby reimagining), and Venom & Vow (which is epic trans/bigender fantasy co-written with their husband, Elliot McLemore.) I’d say those are the most literary YA options, though if your nephew might like things with more of a thriller/horror bent, check out Andrew Joseph White’s books as well, starting with Hell Followed With Us.
In Adult, definitely check out The Thirty Days of Night by Zeyn Joukhadar (more literary) and Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore (more commercial, but definitely hits the sad and lovely beats), and if he’s up for historical, Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg, All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes, or more horror-adjacent, The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo.
For books on my radar in 2025, in case he wants stuff to look forward to, I’d keep The In-Between Bookstore by Edward Underhill and Notes from a Regicide by Isaac Fellman on your radar, and I know Andrew Joseph White has an adult called You Weren’t Meant to Be Human coming up at some point, though that might be 2026.
Every one of those books fits the Ask with a trans male main character, so I hope you find some great books for him to love!

pansexual characters that have stayed with me, are favorites, or i think about often 💗💛💙🌈
i don’t know if any other character will be able to come close to the impact of my beloved david rose (schitt’s creek). it was the first time i heard the word pansexual used on screen and the wine analogy is iconic at this point. harry (the thing about harry) is also a big one because name another on-screen pan lead of a new adult m/m romcom. i’ll wait.
while pansexual isn’t used on page in the “ode to pansexuality” all of the above (juno dawson), it represents a conceptualization of pansexuality as an anti-identity/label or an attitude of not wanting or needing the strict, neat boxes that society forces on and expects of us. it speaks to the time when before learning of pansexuality, i had that mindset, and kinda still do. (and that cover?!)
miss meteor (tehlor kay mejia and anna-marie mclemore) has probably the only instance of love being expressed for the word pansexual. so often pan rep is a shoulder shrug situation, where the character doesn’t feel strongly about the word. but this mc says she loved pansexual the moment she heard it. and that’s really important to me, as is her journey of accepting her pansexuality and coming out.
loveless (alice oseman) has a side pansexual discovery storyline, which i always love. the mc’s sexuality arc in our way (t.l. swan) is the only thing i like about the book. a man who was only attracted to men for 30+ years finds himself attracted to women, and through a journey of analyzing his attraction/feelings and dealing with the assumptions/pressures of other people, he realizes and accepts his pansexuality.
honorable mentions: while amy raudenfeld (faking it) and the mc of black iris (elliot wake) aren’t canon pan, they’re mspec characters i read as pan and relate to the portrayal of their sexualities. amy is the first tv character i saw express that sort of label reluctancy and not viewing attraction based in gender. black iris (elliot wake) is one of the first queer books i actively sought out and the mc’s sexuality has that “fuck gender, fuck labels” vibe.
feel free to share what pan or queer characters have spoken to you or stayed with you!

Happy May! The best month! 💖🌷
Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli is one of the few books on this list that I have had the great fortune to have already read, and it easily and quickly became one of my favorite books. I love this story of bi-realization and what queer infighting and virtue signaling does to our community, and I love the tender newness of this love story! Thinking about this book makes me feel weepy, and I desperately want all of you to read it.
To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose is a Native led fantasy about dragon training and colonization. This book sounds really, really cool, and seems like it could be a bit of a more diverse Dragon Prince, but academic.
All the Dead Lie Down by Kyrie McCauley would have made it on this list even if it didn't look so intriguing, because I trust McCauley so much to make a captivating story with strong, vivid characters. This time, however, things are going Gothic! This is a creepy story of nannying and old houses and horror writers that I'm sure will be stunningly atmospheric.
Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee is a queer romance starring two Chinese men and looks so fluffy and cute. This one has a fake dating of convenience to help boost business and just from that cover alone I'm sure it's going to be sweet as anything.
Painted Devils by Margaret Owen is the sequel to Little Thieves, and while it very much does feel like a middle book in a trilogy (which I'm still so excited about!) it gives all the meddling Vanja and low gods vibes as before, now with more romance and absolute need for therapy. I have read this one, and need the next book in my hands like a month ago thank you.
Venom & Vow by Anna-Marie McLemore and Elliot McLemore is the queer romantic fantasy of my dreams! This one has mistaken identities and hidden identities all due to nefarious plots and fluid genders! I love Anna-Marie McLemore and everything about this screams that I would love it, so I'm gnashing at the bit to get this one!
We'll Never Tell by Wendy Heard is yet another book I know I'll probably love based first and foremost on the author. I loved Dead End Girls, and Heard's 3rd book feels like it'll be a similar vibe. This one is about a group of teen investigators accidentally biting off more than they can chew and causing one of their group to get murdered.
Something Like Possible by Miel Moreland I've already read and have been looking forward to seeing it out on the shelf since last year! If you loved the politics of Red White & Royal Blue but would love a YA, sapphic take- grab this book! The politics here are mostly class president based but everything feels more significant and the themes are just heavy enough to do real heavy lifting. Plus, of course, the romance is impeccable.
Threads That Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou claims to be a bit of a mix of Percy Jackson and Song of Achilles, following descendents of Greek figures who inherit their power. The main character of this is a descendant of The Fates (amazing concept right there!) and must use her powers to solve a string of brutal murders

Do you have an emotional support water bottle? If no, tell me what you're up to this weekend.
I recently got a 64 oz metal water bottle for when we went to the Houston Zoo a few weeks back. I knew I wanted something that would keep my water cold and, as much as I love my Nalgene, it wasn't going to cut it. It was such a good investment because now I can actually have cold water at work and not have to worry about refilling it during the day until I get home.
Featured here is the glass water bottle from Rainbow Crate's July box. It probably won't get much use outside of the apartment because I've broken quite a few plastic ones by dropping them and this one is too pretty to suffer the same fate.
As for weekend plans, on Sunday I'm helping @/manicfemme (insta) open a lot of book mail that's piled up over the last several months. The rest is up in the air, but there's no school Monday, so no potential jobs. 😁
This is also your reminder to drink more water.

hi! do you have any recommendations of YA books with t4t relationships, preferably nblnb, or nblw? thank you so much
t4t is sadly pretty rare in YA, and especially nblw, but there are definitely some good ones! Check out The Heartbreak Bakery by AR Capetta, Venom & Vow by Anna-Marie McLemore and Elliot McLemore, The Brilliant Death by AR Capetta, Lakelore by Anna-Marie McLemore (lol shoutout to the author couples who are themselves in t4t relationships and also happen to be spectacular writers who keep on giving), and IIRC these are nblm but Meet Cute Diary by Emery Lee and The Feeling of Falling in Love by Mason Deaver.

OK so it’s been three years and it’s two am right now but the problem I’m currently having is that my queer book recs sucked so I’m adding more. I didn’t do any research for this I’m going off vibes from whenever I read these books.
Before we start let’s go basic:
I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson should have been on this list to begin with. It’s objectively not the most hinged of books but it does live in my brain.
Anything by Nina LaCour but especially We Are Okay and You Know Me Well make me kind of feral. In very, completely different ways, but still.
Also Loveless by Alice Oseman came out like two months after I posted this. I LOVED loveless it’s so good and perfect because that’s just how Alice does it!!!! literally I believe in love now.
Okay now we can have some fun:
My favorite book of the year (and yes, I know it’s only august, and yes, I know nothing will top it) goes to Man o’ War by Corey McCarthy. You will know about this book specifically if you live in my brain because I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I read it. I’m still looking for ways to get a forever copy to this day because I love it so fucking much. Just read it. like don’t think only read.
This is buzzy in the queer world but I also loved Lakelore by Anna-Marie McLemore. A little magical realism a little t4t a little learning to love yourself. What more could you honestly ask for.
Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar also hit so right. Like the surface story was so good and sweet and perfect but also like. I keep yelling about it but I really mean it when I say that Ishu is so me I am so her I love her and would marry her she’s my autistic blorbo. and not even autistic the way y’all say it these days I mean I’m giving her the RAADS-R and she’s topping out no hesitation.
Orpheus Girl by Brynne Rebele-Henry also should have been on this list since the beginning because it already broke my brain but here we are. Literally imagine the most poignant retelling of O&E ever and it’s here for u. and it’s lesbians. (This book is also notably dark and has a lot of triggering content, so read those CWs besties)
since we’re on the topic of triggering books we might as well put them all in the middle so we can ignore them if necessary. I really liked both Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake and The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan when I read them but it’s been soo many years for both so I’m not going to make major promises. I liked them both but they have some heavy ass topics and content.
moving away from that, I will recommend In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan of course, because what else could I possibly do. Unfortunately, Elliot is me and I am him and he lives in my walls now. I have many Normal and Fine thoughts about the book that are Normal.
Why not round it out with How to Excavate a Heart by Jake Maia Arlow. I do love a STEM queen it has to be said. unobjectionably bizzare but like. we all need a jewish lesbian Christmas corgi-focused romcom goddamn it
Favorite lgbt+ books?
On the list for favorite question ever asked of me? Perhaps?
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sañez (mlm gay, set in Texas in the 70s, happy ending, it’s a classic babey)
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (mlm with background wlw and trans characters!!! Set in the UK) ((it’s an ongoing webcomic, with can be read on tumblr or webtoon, but the first three volumes can be bought in physical copies))
Leah on the Offbeat (and Love, Simon, ofc) by Becky Albertalli (wlw sequel to love Simon!! It’s so good and I adore it!! Bi girls in love as well as fat protagonist!!!)
They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera (mlm tragedy with a little bit of Future Technology Magic, so ambiguously in the future)
Autoboyography by Christina Lauren (mlm with hopeful ending! Exploration of religion and the LDS church, if that’s not you’re thing, set in Utah)
Radio Silence by Alice Oseman (asepc gay-bi friendship, but mlm background romance as demi ace gay / gay! This is one of my favorites on this list)
I Wish You All The Best by Mason Deaver (nblm, happy ending, it is so good and I cried reading it)
Annie on my Mind by Nancy Garden (wlw set in around the 50s-60s? Maybe? Ambiguously unmodern but very lovely)
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee (historical mlm and aroace respectively, set in 1800s Europe, I Hate This Abusive Family so I’m leaving)
How to Make a Wish by Ashley Herring Blake (all Ashley Herring Blake novels are icons, but this one is Very Good. wlw, set in the early 2000s or around there?)
I have more but I have to go to dinner! LGBTQ fiction wins though!!
