Upriver, Downriver is now available!

So, a while back we ran a Kickstarter for a tarot-infused magical river game called Upriver, Downriver, and we’re pleased to announce it’s now available for general purchase through our website!

Upriver, Downriver is a queer fantasy tabletop roleplaying game about sailing along a magical river, and persisting on an impossible journey. Inspired by the Tarot, it was written by our dear friend Ella Watts, with development and editing by Sasha and layout (and river design) by Jonny. It also has some fantastic art by Max Degan and Cael Lyons.

Together, you and your crew will swear a magical oath to reach either the Source of the Great River or the Sea. No one has ever come back from either destination, and each has their own challenges and rewards. But, whatever bends your journey takes, once you’ve sworn your Oath, your soul is committed to continue on towards your goal. Even in death, your ghost will be bound to your Oath and your ship, compelled to complete your voyage.

During your travels, you'll visit enchanting, enigmatic and hostile locations along the River. Each location is tied to one of the major arcana, and is home to its own unique characters and challenges. Your trials and triumphs are determined by dice and tarot cards. What you do with the hand that fate and the River deals is up to you.

DCA Info Part 5: Subjects and Clubs

The following subjects are thought at Diamond Crown Academy

Basic Classes

Magic History - The study of the historical figures of the academy and the histories throughout the years.

Incantations - Verbal spells that require learning a specific language while waving the magic pen in a certain pattern.

Basic Etiquette - The study of proper manners, posture and communication.

Ancient Rune Reading - The study of ancient writing and spells that are cast through magic rune stones.

Animal Linguistics - The study of animal language, and conversing with animals.

Music - Theater and musical performances.

Alchemy - Minerals, plants and many other ingredients are fused to create something entirely new.

General Magic - Magical spells for offense and defense as well as spell breakers and minor hexes.

Study of Magical Relics - The study of old relics and the identification of their history and uses.

PE Subjects

Fencing/Sword Fighting - There is various swords used as well as various sword-handling.

Obstacle Run - The tracks are set with magic traps and obstacles that students need to overcome.

Derby Racing - Horseback racing.

Magical Shift/Maglift - Using magic to throw discs towards a goal.

Griffin Disc - Riding griffins while having to chase a gold disc and place it on the team's catching net.

Martial Arts - Taekwondo, Judo and many other physical combat activities.

Marathon Run - Running a set amount of kilometers.

Side Note: If a student does feel anxious then they're allowed to be excused, Actius dislikes forcing students to do physical activities if they feel uncomfortable. But since he is allowed to run the class however he wishes, he'll just have them write some papers regarding physical education as a substitute or maybe have them do light jogging instead.

Extra-Curricular Classes

Animal Care - Basic study of caring for animals and identifying what they require.

Magical Beast Study - Study of magical beasts as well as taming them for the purpose of gathering information before they are released.

Party Hosting - Learning how to host an event.

Needlework and Jewelry - Sewing clothes and making accessories. The finished products are worn by the students.

Cultural Dance - Dance to different cultures.

Art - Study of art and any form be it, sculpture, painting, metalwork and many more.

Ballroom Dance - Learning the steps of the waltz and many other dances performed by nobles.

Clubs

Theater Club - Stage plays performed by students, the club expects a lot from their members to deliver their roles to utmost perfection. Allison and Evonie are members of this club.

Horse Grooming Club - The horses are used for the derby but also performance. So this club focuses on taking care of the horses as well as training them to do tricks. Ella is a member of this club.

Gardening Research Club - Planting rare species or mixing seeds to see what plant will grow. Vidya is a member of this club.

Volleyball Club - It's volleyball. You smack a ball, also you get hand strength to slap the soul out of someone.

Chess Club - Students play a battle of wits and strategy.

Book Writers Club - Students write novels or short stories and present them during club meetings.

Comic Otaku Club - Fangirling over 2D boys or girls and having the waifu and husbando wars.

Fairy Keeping Club - A club for making sure that the fairies on campus are given proper treatment, such as treating broken wings, keeping their homes clean as well as learning about the body language of fairies.

Magical Artworks Club - Students paint with enchanted brushes to create moving portaits. Rozeline is a member of this club.

Roleplay Game Club - The students play, Dragons and Maidens (Note: This is likely Twisted Wonderland's version of Dungeons and Dragons) and sometimes play the game while wearing a costume of their avatar. Perrine and Cerule are members of this club.

Aviary Club - Bird watching, as well as bird keeping are the clubs main activities. Jinlong is a member of this club.

Asher Vs. Florence Club - A secret club made by Faustus. Only those who know the password are allowed to join. The password asks if you prefer the color pink or blue.

Griffin Scout Club - The griffins are ridden to forests and the students do the scout activities such as recognizing carvings to mark directions. There's also scout cookie sales where they train griffins to deliver packages of cookies to customers. Elu and Briar are members of this club.

The Griffin Scouts was an idea of Actius. He manages the club activities and schedules, and he also manages the griffins used for the scouting team.

The griffins are not like horses, they have a more high standard when it comes to people riding them. Only senior members of the club who has earned a number of badges to receive their senior badge could only ride griffins. Elu and Briar are two of the few who have senior badges. No one owns the griffins, they are called in the summer and autumn for the scout club activities and when winter rolls in, Actius lets them go to migrate to a warmer climate.

Novice scouts are the ones who have to get community service badges, expert scouts have to survive in the wilderness and learn secret codes and symbols to get badges and become senior scouts when they have a certain number of badges and have completed the griffin test. It's when the scout stands a meter away from a griffin flock and have a griffin approach them and offer them a feather as a sign of mutual respect and that they are a worthy rider.

Actius is still stern but a bit more hands on with his teaching, he will show the students how to properly tie a certain rope knot or how to pitch a tent. Even the griffin scout cookie sale was also being taught by him, his cookie recipe is to die for.

50 Days of Fetishes Day 34: Witchcraft

For someone who is so into the idea of "witch”* I've done surprisingly little evil witch roleplay. What I have enjoyed, though, is playing with witchiness and ideas connected to folk magic in other  scenes: Binding someone to me. Using someone's real true name (i.e. not their scene name) to have power over them. Having folktale-esque rules- for example, if you repeat something 3 times it automatically becomes true. Voodoo dolls. Asking someone make a sacrifice of part of themselves to make the hypnosis spells work- or compelling them to make a "sacrifice" when they feel helpless and possessed/enspelled. Possession. 

There's a fun of playing around with these tropes and I'd love to do it more. I bought a class that @HypnoHedonista and @Sylvan_Hypnosis on Twiter taught about using magic concepts in play recently and I'm looking forward to actually having time to watch it and broaden my play. I'd also love more  of your ideas if people have them!

dude i know i'm preaching to the choir here but you're so right. obviously if they were the best books ever written it still wouldn't excuse bigotry but the biggest goop of all of the harry potter defenders in this day and age is that the books aren't even fucking good. and i was *the* target audience at the time, i was twelve when the first one came out and grew with the series as it was released, i harry potter roleplayed online for so many years in my teens. but reading back as an adult, they are so poorly written.

and it's not even like well you're an adult and they were written for the youths because i've read ella enchanted about a hundred times and it still holds up.

also like... keep reading your books if you want? no one is stopping you? just STOP GIVING HER MONEY FOR NEW THINGS OH MY GOd.

YES, EXACTLY!!!!!

i was the target as well, and it was a huuuuge part of my personality for a long time (to the point that i’ve had to make clear statements nowadays that i haven’t been a fan for a while so i don’t get a present related to it from people who don’t really know anything about her or something bc the whole thing just feels super icky to me) but come on, it only takes reading, like, any one other middle school saga to realize how poorly written they are, how often she backtracks, how uninspired is the worldbuilding, how poor is the character development, how shallow is the plot!

and like you said, this doesn’t come from a place of “i’m an adult who only reads serious adult literature” AT ALL. i read the percy jackson books in my twenties!!!! and i’m always a sucker for any cool saga having kids and teenagers come together to save the world with their wit and friendship!!!!! but harry potter is just not it, so it sucks even more that some people are so staunch on defending it when it’s not even a good work!!!!!! it’s mid at best!!!!!!! my little cousin was so unimpressed by it when he was like 8 that he didn’t even finish it, AND HE HAD ALREADY READ AROUND 30 BOOKS BY THEN!!!!

and nostalgia is not worth compromising the life of trans people!!!!!!!!!

Here’s the line-up of our episode list: 

Pilot (1x01) - The Evil Queen curses the entire kingdom to live in modern day Storybrooke with cursed memories and living false lives. 28 years later, Henry seeks out Emma Swan to convince her of magic and the curse she’s destined to break.

The Thing You Love Most (1x02) - Regina does everything in her power to force Emma out of Storybrooke. In the Enchanted Forest, the Evil Queen takes a curse from Maleficent and sacrifices her father to get her revenge.

Snow Falls (1x03) - In Storybrooke, Henry convinces Mary Margaret to visit John Doe, hoping it’ll jog her memory of her true love. In the Enchanted Forest, we see the story of how Snow and Charming first meet and fall in love.

The Price of Gold (1x04) - Emma helps a pregnant Ashley get out of a deal with Mr Gold. In the Enchanted Forest, Ella makes a regrettable deal with Rumplestiltskin in exchange for a better life.

That Still Small Voice (1x05) - When Graham makes Emma deputy, her first job is to help rescue Henry and Archie from the mine tunnels. In the Enchanted Forest, Jiminy seeks out the help of the Blue Fairy to escape the life and business he has with his parents.

The Shepard (1x06) - David has to choose between Kathryn or Mary Margaret. In the Enchanted Forest, the King seeks a replacement after the death of Prince James, Rumplestiltskin suggests his twin brother, David. This leads to his new destiny and marriage to Princess Abigail, a life he doesn’t want.

50 Days of Fetishes Day 21: Evil Therapist Tropes

There's a lot I could write here that I won't but- this kind of thing feels like the height of corruption for me- the same way people have strong feelings about religious roleplay. A therapy session is such a vulnerable, open time and the idea of someone using that trust and those skills and that power in a corrupting way is delicious - like dark chocolate. Fun because it's SO wrong. I think the most twisted version I've done has been ageplay as an evil hypnotherapist secretly making someone's childhood hypnokink more intense- and playing around with a lot of grooming themes. Definitely not for everyone and obviously not ok irl but- that kind of sweet and dark can hit just the right toppy space for me in a scene.

Seeking Role-Playing Partners!

Hey, I'm Ella! I'm hoping to find some role-playing partners!

A bit about me: I am around my twenties, and I would prefer a partner who is over 20 as well. I usually write from one to third paragraphs. I love randomly coming up with ideas to rp, and am quite open minded, but I also do have my limits. Along with coming up with ideas, I love creating things regarding the characters, like playlists or sketches. I'm friendly, and I am open to talk OOC during roleplays, but I'll admit that it's a bit difficult for me to break the ice, so if you want to be friends then I would love some patience. I also tend to be busy on some days, so expect my replies either within the hour or, at maximum, a week. If I take longer, then I'll do my best to let you know beforehand.

Regarding RP: I'm open to M/M, F/F, and sometimes M/F. I don't mind doing fandom or original. For fandom, I typically do Harry Potter (Draco/Hermione, Hermione/Ginny, Lupin/Sirius), Sherlock (Sherlock/John, Lestrade/Mycroft, Jim/Sebastian), Star Wars, or Steven Universe. I also enjoy AUs of fandoms. Those aren't the only fandoms I rp, so if you're curious, you can ask me! For original, I'm open to anything with action, adventure, or urban fantasy, and while I won't oppose to romance or smut, I would prefer a partner who is open to discuss plots, world building, and character building with it! Some ideas I have actually been hoping to do is:

Aaand here's some plots I already have planned lol:

- Pirate x Merfolk: While a group of pirates go out on a search for a mysterious treasure, a storm causes the captain to fall overboard and be rescued by a merperson. Enchanted by the creature, the captain does whatever they can to meet the merperson again and learn more about them.

- Demon x Demon Hunter: A demon and a demon hunter are good friends, unaware that the other is a demon /demon hunter. When the demon hunter kills one of the most powerful demons, the demon finds out who their friend is while also causing the other demons to get angry and go after them. In attempt to keep their secret, the demon joins the demon hunters adventures and must decide to protect their friend or protect their kind.

- Royalty x Hunter: A prince (or princess) being prepared to rule their kingdom realizes that they are in danger when a group of assassins release terrifying creatures to attack the royals, forcing the kingdom's hunter to become their personal bodyguard. They can be friends or enemies when they meet.

- Cop x Criminal: A few months had passed since the police caught the criminal, but a new crime scene suddenly brings up the question if the criminal was innocent after all. So the cop decides to team up with the criminal to figure out who truly is to blame.

Tink and Barbie are my all-time girls, and hold the most special place in my heart as fictional characters in general–Barbie was my role model since I was young.  And Ramona has such a clear voice and kicky world/style that I’d love to work more with.

If I end up making a non-Disney Fairies multi-muse, those two’ll be some of the first on there!

☀ ━ how long have you been roleplaying? how did you get into it?

I’ve been RPing since this time 8 years ago, in 2010. Actually I think August 13th is the exact date because that’s when I enrolled on the Harry Potter RPG site that started me into online role-playing.

I mean, in a way I had ALWAYS been roleplaying since we start playing pretend and with dolls and making up stories as kids, and I just transitioned into doing that in the written format when I took my characters from my ~live-action Harry Potter playing~ with my cousin online and started writing on that site.

It’s almost my RP anniversary, this is actually pretty fun!!!

♣ ━ share five random facts about yourself!

1. I have trouble writing a lot of fluff because even though I like it, there’s not much happening for my character to think about, and I love writing introspection.

2. I’ve been reading a lot more now that I have a job than I did before, which is really nice and refreshing and reminds me why I love literature/writing so much.

3. I wanna write books some day and I have ideas, too, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get down to doing it because I spend all my writing-time and energy into RPing with characters/universes that are not mine.....but I still don’t want to give those up.

4. There are some movies I think are actually better than the books: Twilight series, The Lovely Bones, Stardust. Some where I like both despite huge changes: Beastly, Warm Bodies, Harry Potter series. And some where the movie adaptations are unforgivable: Ella Enchanted, The Hunger Games series...The most perfect adaptation I’ve seen is Holes.

5. I also want to try my hand at poetry but I don’t even know where to start and I’m too lazy or busy with reading/watching/writing other things that I haven’t even looked into it.
