Camila Cabello on how her movie Cinderella is a modern day story of female empowerment
Not waiting to be saved by a prince, Kay Cannon’s Cinderella is not your ordinary fairy-tale princess, but a feisty fashion entrepreneur. Cover stars Camila Cabello and Nicholas Galitzine open up about the classic story that’s been updated with new-age ambitions
BY UDITA JHUNJHUNWALA
Over the years, French author Charles Perrault’s 1697 folk tale Cinderella has been adapted countless times. It was a Disney animated musical (Cinderella, 1950), Cinderella was even a fella (Cinderfella, 1960), a high school student (A Cinderella Story, 2004) and a celebration of diversity with a non-white cast (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, 1997). In Ever After (1998), which featured historical characters from the 16th and 19th centuries, Anjelica Huston was the quintessential wicked stepmother, and Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella (2015) adaptation featured Lily James as an empowered young Ella, the girl covered in cinder who loses her glass slipper at the ball and falls in love with a charming prince till they live happily ever after.
The latest adaptation, based on director Kay Cannon’s screenplay, sidesteps the clichés yet ticks the boxes of wicked stepmother and stepsisters, a charming prince (played by Nicholas Galitzine) and a lot of pop songs. However, in Cannon’s updated Cinderella, the fairy godparent is genderless (played by Billy Porter) and this Cinderella, played by singer-songwriter Camila Cabello in her movie debut, is no whimpering wallflower. She’s got dreams and ambition to become a fashion designer. Her happily ever after is not dependent on a handsome prince.
A new role model
When asked about how their version of the classic is different from previous versions, Cabello says via an email interview, “It’s a totally new telling of the story. I feel like other fairy tales have values that are old-fashioned and don’t reflect the independence and strength of women accurately. This version has definitely been updated for a 2021 audience and world. The spirit of the story is there, with the characters and some themes, but it feels much more current in its values.”
Featuring a CEO Cinderella, a diverse cast of townsfolk, a line-up of princesses from around the world (don’t miss the cameo by Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe) and a fairy godparent whose costume merges masculine and feminine elements, here’s a classic tale upended to become a modern-day story of female empowerment. “The modern, fresh take on a well-trodden fairy tale allows us to discuss contemporary issues and themes and hopefully make this version more relatable to audiences. The modern songs are an amazing contrast to the period aesthetic that is represented in the costumes and setting. I also think the film brings more humour than we've seen in previous fairy tales, which is largely due to Kay Cannon and the array of comedic actors in our cast,” adds Galitzine.
From the trailer, it appears that this version is far more empowering for Cinderella. “Definitely, and this version of Cinderella is way more relatable to young girls and women who might be able to see something from the character’s experience in their own life,” says Cabello, who describes her Ella as “empowered and ambitious, with dreams of her own. It’s a Cinderella in which she saves herself. She doesn’t aspire to be a wife or a part of the royal family, she’s too busy working on her fashion empire.”
So does that leave Galitzine’s prince simply holding a glittery glass slipper? When asked how Prince Robert is different, if at all, from the legacy character of the charming Prince, Galitzine explains, “It is often said that the prince’s role in these fairy tales is singular: to marry the princess. But while finding love is one aspect of Prince Robert’s story, his quest for freedom is more important. He’s a man who feels trapped by his circumstance, stifled by the responsibilities of the crown and the role he is expected to play. He’s figuring himself out for a lot of the movie, and Cinderella really aids in this. Bringing a level of humanity and vulnerability to him was so important in differentiating him from other princes. I also feel we tried to make him a little edgier than princes before him through the music and costumes.”
Costume drama
The fashion-obsessed will find it hard to separate Cannon’s 2021 Cinderella from the costumes, not just because fashion is Ella’s dream profession, but it’s also her mode of expression. Working with the costume department and taking on the part of an aspiring couturier were among the highlights of Cabello’s experience on this film. “I loved my work costumes! They were so comfortable but still had Ella’s swag to them. Ellen Mirojnick and her team were so passionate and full of joy for what they were doing. They were so in love with Ella and the values she represented. In a time where women’s self-expression is so limited, she uses fashion to express herself. Even when she’s dressing for work she has accessories in her hair and puts unique details in her corsets. I think it shows how much self-expression and authenticity are important to her. Obviously, the story has romantic themes and I think that shows in the costumes. They’re very romantic, magical costumes—but designed with Ella’s character in mind. As she makes her own clothes, there were considerations about how she might have made certain decisions or designed things in a certain way. She even makes her own ball gown.”
Costume designer Mirojnick, who brought alive the world of Bridgerton with her clothes, also had the edgy Porter to work with, and she took inspiration from the monarch butterfly to create the godparent’s (named Fab G), gown with wings and custom Jimmy Choo boots.
Cabello equally loved working with Porter and all that his character represents. “His version of the Fairy Godmother is genderless. After all, magic doesn’t have a gender. Fab G guides Cinderella and helps her dreams come true…but she gets there by staying true to herself along the way,” she explains.
Of all his co-actors, from Cabello to Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan, British actor Galitzine was most in awe of Brosnan. “Working with Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver was just a dream. A bit of a pinch-yourself moment. They are icons but are so down-to-earth and giving. I was just trying to soak up as much knowledge from them as possible. Minnie is so funny, and Pierce is my James Bond. I should have asked him for some tips if I ever throw my hat in the ring for a future Bond,” says the 26-year-old, perhaps not entirely in jest. On his co-star Cabello, he adds, “I feel so lucky that Camila and I clicked straight away. Even from the chemistry test. We have a similar sense of humour and a willingness to learn, which bonded us throughout the process. To me, Camila is an old soul and carries herself with such wisdom. I love working with actors like that.”
Modern day fairy tale
The lead actors, our digital cover stars for the month, agree that it’s time to update fairy tales and align them to a 21st century audience, where girls and boys of today feel seen in popular culture. Cabello says it is about time that “little girls can see themselves being represented in Aladdin or The Little Mermaid.” Galitzine adds, “The idea of the damsel in distress is fast becoming obsolete. I think young women want to see themselves, and indeed their hopes and dreams, represented in characters. This film does an incredible job in bringing diversity in its cast and crew, which I think is integral in the process of updating these fairy tales for a modern-day audience.”
So do either of them believe in ‘happily ever after’? Galitzine says he believes that relationships take work: “Nothing is ever perfect. You have to make compromises and sacrifices, and it won’t always be as glamorous as the fairy tales may suggest. But I do believe there is a person out there who will love you for all your imperfections and messiness. And those kinds of people will be with you for a very long time.”
Cabello, on the other hand, agrees with the film’s updated take that an individual’s happiness is not dependent on another. “I guess the idea of ‘happily ever after’ is part of the old ideals of fairy tales, where the princess is destined to be with a prince, and that’s where her happiness will come from. But I like to think we’re redefining that idea with this film, and that you can be happy in yourself and with your own ambition. That being said, I am a huge Disney fan, so I will always be happy that I got the chance to be in this movie.”
Cinderella will stream on Amazon Prime Video from September 3, 2021

I mean, I don’t think RT reads fairytales for anything beyond aesthetic purposes at all.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around how Yang equates to Goldilocks beyond her hair colour. The moral message of Goldilocks is to impress on children to think before they act and consider the feelings of others, which is not something that Yang’s ever seemed to have any issues with. If anything, she’s too self-sacrificing, and others don’t consider her, so it’s literally just the hair. (Unless you want to count Raven, which... RT clearly doesn’t.)
Meanwhile, the statement that Blake is both beauty and the Beast... is... okay, one, you’re just saying that because she’s a Faunus, and that’s your oppressed racial minority allegory, and two, the Beast was also an inconsiderate, selfish hack that got karmically punished for being callous and self-centred, so unless you’re trying to equate that to either Blake’s attempts at saving her own people from oppression or her abusive relationship with Adam, I think y’all better let that one go.
I’m also not sure how she equates to Beauty, besides being a cute girl. I mean, I guess she likes books. Belle liked books...
Also can I just like. Squint at the fact that it was a Huntsman that helped Snow White escape from her step-mother, but RT cast it as the 7 Dwarves... and instead of a fairy godmother saving Cinder(ella), it was a Huntsman? But... Weiss is the one that becomes a Hunstsman, so... Guys. Your aesthetics. Guys.
...well, they got Red Riding Hood’s naievety, I suppose. That’s something.

both the book and movie are very good and VERY different. i prefer the book since i’ve loved it since i was little but both are GREAT and super fun
and i’d die for char. ella and char’s relationship in the book is SO good and the fact that the conflict doesn’t have a big bad (the movie adds one for reasons that make sense) is so interesting and good and also ella is so funny her and char just have a good time together and make each other laugh and i’m
roger and hammerstein’s cinderella
any uh stage recording you can find i recommend!! i love the prince in this one topher i loooove you (tho ALL the princes on this list are SUPER good) like also the relationships are fantastic in this

a cinderella story and another cinderella story
hilary duff is the first and selena gomez is the second!! there are three other movies in this cinderella story series as of this post, but the third was meh and the other two are on my bad list. but the first two? iconic and amazing very good very fun!!! some VERY iconic scenes was well like [chef’s kiss]
cinderella 2015
i know people are not fans of the disney live actions but i LOVE this one!! the aesthetic is so good and i love lily james and those c o s t u m e s!!! it also doesn’t try to be a shot to shot movie or really ~fix~ the original aside from ella and the prince meeting each other earlier
cinder (book 1 of the lunar chronicles)
i love this series and how it handles fairy tales. it’s all so good read it for sure and also kai is like. the best. he and cinder’s scenes are all SO good
into the woods
not a straight cinderella story, but i really like cinderella’s role in this story and like how it handles archetypes! i think on the steps of the palace is a GREAT song. idk if i like the movie that much in comparison to the stage show but for each your own
i hope you enjoy at least one of these!!!

The Great Prince aesthetics: Cinder Prince
And here in those last days of summer he and Ella sat together as their time ran out all around them. The Prince could stay. He just shouldn’t, because soon, before he and Ella knew it, the fall would have caught up with them...
“I wouldn’t want you to wait for me.”
-
“But I would.” She murmured, biting her lip. It almost drew a laugh out of her, the knowledge that she would, in fact, wait for the Prince, whether or not he wanted her to. She would wait out the autumn and the winter. She would wait for the ice to thaw and the sun to return. Months would pass and yet still, she would be there. She didn’t laugh, though. “I would.” She didn’t laugh, but rather she leaned forward, pressing her lips to his.

Tagged by @laryna6 to say what I’m working on/ have been working on/ should probably stop procrastinating on
1) supernatural fic
I’ve been working on this one supernatural fic (working title ‘Tripwire’) that has three arcs (I think.) It’s a destiel fic.  I’ve only written one arc in about half a year last year and haven’t done anything with it since. First chapter deals with how Cas meets Dean in random circumstances. By second chapter, there’s a big time skip wherein Dean wakes up with no memory and Cas has already fallen in love with him.
The following chapter, it goes straight back to where chapter one ends off. And then goes back to the timeskip next chapter. Yeah - both timelines are running concurrently - past Dean meeting Cas for the first time and getting into shit, and then present Dean not understanding why this Castiel cares about him so much and trying to figure out what happened. The timelines get closer and closer together (reveal/back up information at the same time) to the point where it converges - Dean loses his memory/Dean is about to find out why he lost his memory. The end of timeline one should fit immediately to the beginning of timeline 2, chapter 2. So it’s a pretty different structure I’m trying out, instead of just spamming flashbacks like in Monster lol.
The actual story I might be a little cliched - Cas is in a Shadowy Organisation, has been indoctrinated into it his entire life, has Super Spy Powers. Goes into a fancy black tie event To Kill A Man. Meets Dean, a guy who stole a suit and snuck into the party For Funsies. Things happen and Bad Guys mistakes Dean for Cas, kidnaps wrong guy.
(CUE TIME SKIP.)
Dean wakes up. There is a bullet hole in him. Apparently, he’s officially dead on paper. His brother has finished law school. Mysterious guy Cas nurses him back to health and then leaves. Bad Guys are (still) after him, though he has no idea why. Tries to find Cas, while Cas is shooting down people who try to catch him. (violence! action movie vibes!! cliches, probably!) (I’m actually really proud with the concurrent timelines but not sure if I have the motivation to do the full three arcs....) (There’s 14 chapters but I haven’t worked on it in months and months.)
2) Noblesse time travel.
An entire year and only three chapters to show for it: That Noblesse Time travel fic I said I was going to do. I have the ideas but not the motivation ugh.
Three main storylines:
1 - For Reasons Not That Important, Just An Excuse To Do The Premise - Rai goes back the past to find a Frankenstein who has not yet met him. A Frankenstein who is hunting nobles and mutants. (HOly shoot I just got the idea to add Tesamu in this omg maybe I should.......get on that.....)
2 - Tao, M-21 and Takeo wind up in Lukedonia. Like near a thousand years ago. When Franken and Rai are living together, but not bonded. Frankenstein is very suspicious of them. (Actually....this might be a little ‘parent trap’ ish if I can pull it off hahahahaha.)
3 - Frankenstein goes to the future, where he meets Regis and Seira grown up. In the future, there is no Noblesse.
Then the characters start time jumping to each other’s timelines before going back to present day.
3) Rurouni Kenshin and Shakespeare fic
Gosh this could have been good if I wasn’t such a fuck. I’m four chapters into this Rurouni Kenshin fic. Except, it’s Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and I named it “Twelfth Knight.” !!!
(Also probably blatant indulgent fic but fight me.) It’s a crime mystery. Kenshin and Kaoru (married) and co. go back to Kyoto because Saitou told them to Come See This Shit. Which is - a lot of murders that were definitely done by Kenshin’s Hiten Mitsurugi ryu, because Saitou knows his rival’s style too well.
Meanwhile in The Past, a hardened samurai woman- an onnabugeisha - is searching for her disciple who ran away. A thing happens and she ends up in Kenshin and co’s present.
Meanwhile Hiko Seijuro has also come across these clearly-Hiten-mitsurugi-murders. So. Because there are only two living practitioners of the Mitsurugi ryu, and Kenshin and Saitou know that it’s not Kenshin who lives in Tokyo, they think Hiko Seijuro did the murders. Hiko Seijuro, who hasn’t had to kill anyone in years, thinks it’s Kenshin who’s gone awol. They try to track each other down.
The samurai woman, of course, turns out to be the third Hiten Mitsurugi user. But she came from the past. Making her the twelfth heir of the style. Meaning she was the master of Hiko Seijuro 13 - she’s Hiko Seijuro 12. Who is looking for her missing kid disciple in Meji era 1880, wherein he would be 40+ years old. Thus, “Twelfth Knight!”
Based on Shakespeare’s best comedy imo
4) “embers, smog, cinder, ella.” About Cinderella. And the demon who lives in the walls of the house she cleans.
Exactly how it sounds. Everyone treats Cinderella like a servant. The demon that lives in the old wood of her family’s country home sees everything. The role of the fairy god mother is given to Mr. Demon, who never shows up, but is always there, watching, lurking, helping Cinderella clean the house and get to the ball. Never really planned on posting lol purely aesthetic and indulgent XD, a character study more than a fic. I named it.
5) “A Magnolia Rides to War” Mulan character piece
Don’t know if I’m going to post this lol not really a fic. Totally for my own indulgence. Just a character study - full of oodles and oodles of pretty metaphors and purple prose. Magnolia flower is the eng translation of ‘mulan.’
6) An Unadmitted Defeat
Ah yes, one day I decided to, you know. Rewrite the entirely of the Lotus Lantern myth. (???) This was so spontaneous I don’t know hahaha.
About the story of Chen Xiang, a young boy who lived in mostly mountain isolation with his loving parents. One day, family he didn’t know he had rocks up. It turns out his parents were trying to raise him away from celestial gods and magic, because his Uncle is the Heavenly Law Enforcer, Erlang Shen. Who quickly destroys their house, steal’s his mother Sanseng Mu’s powerful Lotus Lantern weapon, and traps her under a mountain after a big fight.
Chen Xiang learns this happened because he is a demigod - his dad was human and mum was a goddess. Human-god intermarriage is outlawed and Chen Xiang is a Heretic. After stealing back the Lantern and escaping from Erlang Shen’s cold fifth layer palace, Chen Xiang has one singular objective: Save Mum. To save Mum, he has to defeat God Erlang Shen, who has never lost a fight in recorded history.
But just because he never lost a fight doesn’t mean he’s won every single one. Who is the person Erlang Shen could not win? -- Heavenly rebel, Sun Wukong, who is just what Chen Xiang needs.
8) Two and Three
Character piece on the Yang twins before their heavenly fallout - goddess Sanseng Mu and Erlang Shen.
7) Who is the Monster
Of course, my long running Noblesse fic!! A rift comes between Frankenstein and Raizel when an enemy from Frankenstein’s past comes back to enact a grand plan.
(minor spoilers - First adopted child is terribly jealous and mad at adopted father’s new partner and new adopted children, thinks dad deserves better, so does most logical thing - destroy everything he loves.)
8) A man with no mother
An ongoing naruto fic.....that I have not updated for a long time :(
An excuse for Kakashi to hang out with Kushina and get motherly vibes from her. Minato, Konoha’s best, goes missing. Kushina goes out of retirement to go Find Him. Outside the KOnoha boarders, she finds young ANBU Kakashi, who has broken rank to also go Find Him. Hijinks ensue.
(One of the early fics looking back now I’m a little...eugh...but I will try -- try-- to finish it.)

1. Which book has been on your shelves the longest?
A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn
Virals by Kathy Reichs

I got all of these in middle school.
Also, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe, which I’ve had my whole life. One of my favorite children’s books.
2. What is your current read, your last read, and the book you will read next?
Current: Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb and The Queen of Attolia by Meghan Whalen Turner
Last: The Thief by Meghan Whalen Turner
Next: Dunno. Maybe I’ll reread And I Darken so I can read Now I Rise. If I like The Queen of Attolia I might move on with the series.
3. Which book does everyone like but you hate?
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Simon vs. The Homo sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Abertalli
Cinder by Marissa Meyer (I like the series, but I find the first book underwhelming and if I had read it before Scarlet, I wouldn’t have continued the series at all)
The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
Crismon Bound by Rosamund Hodge (words cannot describe the depths of hatred I have for this one)
4. Which book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read but you probably won’t?
Pantomime by Laura Lam and A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar
5. Which book are you saving for “retirement”?
Almost every classic that I haven’t read yet.
6. Last page: read it first or wait until the end?
Depends on whether I’m enjoying myself or not. I read three chapters of Three Dark Crowns then skipped to the end to see if I had guessed the plot twist (I did).
7. Acknowledgements: waste of ink or interesting aside?
I don’t feel one way or the other about them. I usually just ignore them.
8. Which book character would you switch places with?
I wouldn’t
9. Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (person, place, time)?
The Upside of Unrequited--contributes to the reason why I despise it. The main character reminds me of someone in my life I’d rather forget.
10. Name a book you acquired in some interesting way
Umm...I have a copy of Paradise Lost that the sub for my English Lit class gave me. Vintage aesthetic
11. Have you ever given a book away for a special reason to a special person?
I only give my books to libraries

Ha nope--I don’t reread things I don’t like
14. What’s the strangest item you’ve ever found in a book?
I’ve never found anything strange
15. Used or brand new?

Opiate of the masses--honestly I only really like his work from the eighties
17. Have you ever seen a movie you liked better than the book?
Lord of the Rings
