So here’s something I’ve been playing since about mid-March
I believe it’s still in Beta (good news - your feedback has weight! I’ve gotten a reply email every time I’ve sent feedback, which is nice)
It’s definitely Stardew-inspired - I believe the base character sprite is straight up ripped from SDV - but I hesitate to use the word “clone”. Every NPC is new and unique, and they’ve added or streamlined mechanics.
Some of my favorite mechanic updates:
There’s an Interact/Pickup button and a Tool button. AND your weapon is equipped and a Weapon button appears around enemies rather than trying to switch from inventory
Fishing Traps can hold multiple days’ worth of catches (unsure of exact number, but at least three) AND a day’s catch can be more than 1 of the item
Fishing Minigame feels smoother and more reasonable in general (and I’m not a big fan of FMGs)
Social Menu is handy and gifts are once per day, not 2 per week
Map has every shop available and you can see their stock (though currently I can’t buy, unsure if incomplete or locked) at any time
You can do a Local Save at ANY TIME, not just sleeping
Tool Upgrading is instant
Currently (this my be a bug, not a feature) can plant items out of season
there’s a hot merman who appears like mid-spring
Upgrading inventory can be done at any time with Diamonds (which drop often IN-GAME, not just $$$) to a maximum of 150 inventory slots
YOU CAN CRAFT FROM CHESTS
There are, of course, bugs and issues (the localization is still a bit rough in places, I just experience a bugged event, etc.) but they’re constantly patching and upgrading it and it’s completely free. maybe give it a shot?
(also plz send them feedback on the characters they’ve incidentally* given the name “Tr*mp” bc uhhh it’s kind of the one major blight on the game tbh)
(*I received a reply stating that this was not an intentional connection, and I provided feedback -that I believed this would not test well in the American market- and I’m leaving it at that bc haranguing them will not change their minds)
More stuff:
The game is based in China, which I personally find pretty charming and neat, esp since I don’t have a lot of cultural knowledge of China so it’s cool to get stuff from this
The pacing is really fast compared to SDV, but I feel like they balanced it really well, you unlock things as your character and Manor level up
This also provides impetus to try and level up - I was fulfilling more Van Orders and crafting more furniture in an effort to hit level 30 to unlock a particular area
Construction takes, with few exceptions, 1 day. The exceptions provide an opportunity to bribe motivate the carpenter with cash to make it 1 day anyways
In the first week I acquired a rad skateboard and a bicycle so that was cool
When I say they’re always updating I mean it - I got booted once (they seem to have smoothed this a bit) and when I came back they’d fixed an issue with the Watering Can, so that it only watered dry spaces and not already-watered ones
There’s, so far, 2 Mines:
Ancient Mine is wall-to-wall rocks, with Ores and Gems deeper within (and I mean that in a tile sense, there’s no ladders). Occasionally has pockets with enemies and a chest that always has Ingots and Transport Scrolls.
Occult Mine focuses on enemies, with a strong one every N9th level (do NOT trust the quest thing telling you you’re ready for floor 30. 29th guardian is BRUTAL right now. Hopefully they’ll balance that soon). Enemies in here drop Dark Orbs, a currency within the mine for gear and roulette rolls. More importantly, every level has random pickup items -including out-of-season ones, and Rare Herbs that can otherwise only be found very rarely while visiting another player.
Teleportation Babey! It’s a bit limited atm but it’s getting there.
NPCs include a carpenter who’s terrified of bugs, a rancher who’s constantly lit on Loving His Wife Juice, a vapid-seeming trophy daughter with legit events regarding discussing her life with her mother, and a Merman. Did I mention the Merman?
Tumblr media
the merman
The luck system is a bit more overt than SDV which I appreciate - your daily calendar just straight up tells you the overall quality, and 1 Pro and 1 Con for the day (ex., you might get extra ore with Mining+ but have a greater chance for dishes to fail with Cooking-. Every day has one + and one -.)

Session 35 Notes
The Silver Scale Pack get to know various members of Rana's immediate family, get woken by draconic-speaking rodents, find out more about their quest, and hit a few stores on their way back through Longview, headed for one of the local taverns.
@gher-bear @aradow @telurin @epimetala
Tumblr media
On this day we have a nice visit with Rana's mother, Romy, stay over and find out Anesh, for as long as anyone can remember, has a population of tiny animals that speak draconic. They all speak draconic and have infected our rats with the same! It's totally normal guys! And no, Diem, it is not because one of the town's people is secretly a dragon. We'd know. For sure.
The next day we move on to meet Rana's brother, sister-in-law, niece, and niephew. We find out a little more about Haldric and Phi's daggers, which she hides in her pack and displays her common daggers in their place instead. Ixayl'anu gets her platinum ring made, Diem gives the kids their putty vivis as a gift. On our way toward the tavern, we hit a general supply store and maaaybe one other??? Dried fruits and granola were purchased along Phi's medical supplies at any rate.

Session 35 Notes
Notes!
(Chillin’ with Rana’s mom)
When we go in Rana’s home, Phi becomes a wandering cat who helps herself to exploration, comes back and says “There’s a hot tub!”
Mom: You’re welcome to borrow it.
Phi: Is this where you grew up?
Rana: Yep! (pulls out duck sauce, honey, apple jam etc. - giving it to her mom).
Phi sees this and pulls out her very expired mixed fruit to hand over, along with her gummy owlbears.
Mom: Oh no dear, that’s fine, you don’t have to start pulling supplies out of your pack.
Phi drops the gummy owlbears into the pile anyway.
Rana: Really sorry to barge in like this, but we just needed a couple of days, we’ve run into some situations and I’m looking for someone in Bouldergap - wanted to see if Stell knew anything about them.
Romy tells us we’re welcome anyway, stresses that this is still Rana’s home too and says something about friends that I missed for note-taking.
Rana pulls out the silver scale and letter from Retin and talks about him, says she’s pretty sure the guy Retin is sending us to is a dwarf. We were told he might be helpful, but we weren’t told where he was. She figured Bouldergap was the place to look and knows it’s a long shot her mom or brother would know him but we also needed a place to stay on the way, so thought she thought she might as well ask.
Romy: I can’t be sure but I feel like Stell has mentioned a Haldric in passing but I certainly don’t have a whole lot of communication with anybody of that name.
Rana: No ironbands as customers then?
Romy: No
Rana: It’s a weird thing, handed us this dragon scale gave us that name and sent us this way.
We’ve noticed Romy has a bone of contention with Rana over the news about shadowood travelling.
With prompting Diem remembers they’re the story teller and should tell it, 13 performance, gets smoother as they go on. However, to their friends, who have heard Diem tell this particular story among others many times, they definitely seem off their game a little.
When we get to fighting the dragon, Romy is worried, Diem insists healers were on standby so nobody died
Rana: We almost had him.
Diem: Well I mean technically one of us did get him later that night…
Phi cracks up laughing
After stories Rana says something about the meteor
Mom says something I missed for note-taking, GM is telling us about blacksmiths/nosy customers (so maybe something about that?).
Through conversation we gather that Grismor is innkeeper/tavern keeper of The Smiling Dragon - one of 2 inns who trades in gossip. Smiling Dragon is better for gossip, better drink, does his own ale, seasonal brews, jolly little dwarf who is as tall as he is round. Square dwarf.
Rana tells us about her messages to her brother which provided a nice distraction about meteor news for Longview.
Rana offers her mother the camels then belated asks us if that’s alright.
Diem says that they can’t obviously take the camels everywhere they go after this anyway.
There’s some talk about whether they’re needed for the trip further North.
Romy: Lets see how they do with the sheep
Rana: Elk’s in with the sheep and they’re doing fine (I think we ended up deciding ooc that it’s in a separate paddock though).
Rana is playing with the silver dragon scale while making small talk which eventually includes Farford gossip too - specifically the mention of a firecat.
Romy: Yeah someone was talking about seeing one here too.
Rana: No one saw the person it was with so I’m thinking it’s just a stray
Romy: We do have a lot of flame point cats in the area so it’s possible I suppose.
Ixayl’anu: Is it the same type of cat?
Conversation about them being wild cats vs tame, a specific species, etc continues.
Rana: No like flame point siamese not actual fire
DM: these are not just cats they are more akin to avatars of The Candace
We find out the entire town is talking about firecats too
Rana: How’s Stell (Stellan) doing? I picked up a few things for the kids, so hopefully they’ll like it.
Romy: Good
Rana: Nothing alive
Romy: I’m sure Stell will appreciate that.
Diem asks about the kids so we find out Rana has a niece and niephio (I have no idea on the spelling for this and a google search turned up only nibling as a suggestion for enby niece/nephew). Diem grins further to learn of the niephio in particular.
Rana (upon mention of the niece): She big enough to help with the forge yet?
Romy: She’s big enough to do the bellows and help out
Rana: We will hunt them down tomorrow
Phi: Yay!
At some point Phi would say “So your brother only has two kids?”
Rana: Yeah just two kids
Phi: Oh, so they’re just starting?
Rana: No I get the impression they might be done
Phi: Interesting...
Rana: At least he doesn’t (something I missed)
Phi: Well, that’s why you have more, so they can be together.
Rana: I’ll mention it to him...better yet you could mention it to him
Phi: This is the starter pack right?
Romy is extremely amused by this conversation.
(Dinner prep and additional conversations)
There are dress mannequins and clothes everywhere, fabrics everywhere.
Diem and Romy eventually start talking about the tailoring and different fabrics and fashions etc.
As they talk about that, Rana wanders off to make food for everyone.
Phi goes to help cook.
Diem wanders off with Romy to talk about fabrics and fashion some more (Rana will throw them out the second story window if they do more than that lol).
Rana was half sorting her bag and still has her rocks and stuff spread out on the rug even as she’s making dinner now.
Romy gifts Diem an outfit by the end of their conversation, still so happy this is the first time Rana’s brought anyone home. As she’s got Diem pulled aside though, she asks for more details about everything that happened, worried and just making sure everything’s truly good, and how is Rana really doing?
Diem spins it well about how capable Rana is.
Her mom def agrees and looks worried, but noticeably less so.
While waiting for dinner we all talk more, telling Romy about how we saved Perfection. She does not look ready to come to terms that her daughter is an adventurer now, but accepts it.
Part 16 of Rana rumors according to the other townsfolk who saw us all: “Yeah we knew something like this was gonna happen eventually”
Rana brings up the thunderbird and we talk about that.
Food got delivered, rats were introduced, how Rana and Phi have been training them to spy, rat race story from the Harvest festival gets told as well.
Rana notes that she is actually showing us off to her mom <3
Rana prompts us to talk about ourselves to her mom.
Phi happily tells her whole life story, or at least all the things she’s said to us as a group.
Ixyal’anu talks a little about herself as well.
Diem hangs back and doesn’t say much during this portion as they already talked pretty extensively with Romy already.
Rana: And Ixayl'anu’s on a task for her god but she doesn’t have a fire cat, she has vague dreams.
Romy asks about Ixayl’anu’s deity, pleasant ‘mom questions.’
As things wind down, Diem remembers the find familiar spell and asks if they have a moment, whether it would be alright to summon them while they’re here - noting it would listen to their directions and not make a mess or break anything. They get permission, but never end up doing the spell before bed.
Phi takes her hot tub bath, Diem takes one after.
After Rana gets us settled to bed in the guest room, she goes out and takes a point of exhaustion spending 8 hours to cast enriching the land again since she’s been gone a few years and it only lasts a year, then she goes and sits with the sheep, all of the sheep bed down next to her in a sea of white around her and she leans back against the nearest sheep for a nap/meditation during the spell. They remember her and know she’s the source of the good food.
(Mice vs. Rats: Draconic edition)
During the night, in the wee hours of the morning Ixayl’anu wakes up hearing some very high squeaky voices arguing “This is our territory”
“No, we were invited,” back and forth half awake-half asleep and thinking “what is this? Oh...this is real, this is something that is happening here.”
Very tiny angry voices continue.
Investigation check for more details 15: It’s dark in the room, she can kinda see in the shadows, she doesn’t see anyone. At the foot of Ixayl'anu’s bed is Horatio, four little house mice are around him being territorial against him, and the strange thing is they are all speaking draconic, including Horatio.
Ixayl'anu: What...what?
When Phi wakes up she doesn’t understand her rat any more, but she does hear the rat and mice speaking draconic.
Ixayl’anu: What?
The four mice squeak in a mousy scream
Horatio: Yeah you better run (turns to Ixayl'anu): Thanks!
Ixayl’anu: What? Why? Why are you speaking draconic?
Horatio: Is that what this is? I don’t know I was just suddenly able to and these mice were speaking a weird dialect and I found I could speak back in it as well.
Ixayl’anu: What...okay...and you’re still speaking it, who were they what were you fighting about?
Horatio: They live here and were being territorial and I was telling them I was an invited guest ‘cause I’m with you all.
(I am dead to the world as Phi wakes up)
Phi: Why are you talking to yourself?
Ixayl’anu gestures at the rat
Phi: Have you been teaching my rat that...?
Ixayl’anu: No…. Do you think that’s just something you can teach a rat?
Phi to Horatio: How are you doing that?
Horatio: I don’t know it just happened!
Phi: You’re still doing it…
There is conversation back and forth as its established among the three characters that Horatio still understands Phi, but since he is no longer speaking rat, she can’t understand him, but now Ixayl’anu can both understand and speak with him through draconic.
Ixayl’anu says something I missed.
Phi: what are you saying to my rat?
Ixayl’anu says something else I missed.
Horatio: You all can just decide what language to speak in? That’s weird.
Ixayl’anu: Yeah it is weird
Horatio: It’s a weird dialect and apparently it’s infectious.
Hamlet is mentioned in the back and forth and Phi, recognizing the name, wonders aloud if Hamlet is like this now as well. She tells Horatio he’s changed and she hopes it’s not permanent
Ixayl’anu tries to stop her to ask about that back and forth but Phi slips out of the guest room.
Phi 25 stealths through the house looking for Rana. From a window she sees an odd clump of sheep in the field. She goes out outside and climbs the fence.
Rana is deep in meditation.
Phi: Hamlet, wake up Hamlet…
Rat wakes up and cleans his face but says something back in draconic that she can’t understand.
Phi in common: Oh my god.
Phi uses her stone to let Ixayl'anu know not only this, but what she can see out here around Rana (visible plant growth around her - she’s decided to sleep on her sheep in the field which is weirdly moving and Hamlet’s doing the same thing, Rana’s not moving, I feel like I’m dreaming I don’t know about you…)
In squeakish Phi tells Hamlet that she can’t understand him but she knows he can understand her so “If you want to find out what’s going on you have to talk to Ixayl'anu about it because she’ll understand you. So I’m going to go now.”
Hamlet is irritated and goes back to sleep. All the sheep watch her. One sheep baas at her, then they all start baaing for food, none of them were speaking draconic.
Ixayl’anu to horatio while Phi’s gone: They just walked up to you and started talking to you and that was it?
Horatio: They tried to fight me!
Ixayl’anu: like biting and scratching?
Horatio: Yeah, look at this wet spot! And I’m an invited guest!
Ixayl’anu: That’s rude!
Horatio: That’s very rude, yeah! I’m an invited guest *stamps tiny rat feet*!
Together Ixayl’anu and Horatio determine they probably live in the roof or something, not pets.
Ixayl’anu casts detect magic. She sees the faintest little glow around Horatio. So faint you may think it’s not there and the only reason she sees it is because the lights are off, a wisp of power with the vaguest sense of magic. The source of it is nowhere nearby and the magic itself is so barely there she can’t even see the mice in the walls like she should have if they were properly bespelled in some way. It’s not any specific school for it. Mostly all she really sees is the glow of our various magic items.
At this point Phi returns
(Diem’s perception rolls were 2, 3, and now 0 lol. It is at this point we determine Diem is actually being held in sleep by their patron, catching up, talking about the familiar, and the follower and the spells and just having tea and a lovely bonding time. Probably when they were Tarma out in the desert, they did less communicating)
I missed some back and forth between Ixayl’anu, Phi, and Horatio.
Phi: They were being aggressive and picking on him?
Ixayl’anu to Horatio: Would you be willing to see where these mice have gone?
Horatio: You want me to bring one back to you? Yeah I can do that.
Ixayl’anu: You don’t have to but it’d be nice, I can give you food for it, *looks at her supplies*
Horatio: What kind of treat do I get, what’s in it for me?
Ixayl’anu: Nope no that’s not food I have nope that’s not food. *pauses in her rummaging* Well, what do you want, I suppose we can find something for you?
*thinks on it* A gummy owlbear?
Ixayl’anu: Oh I have some of those. Sure. *finds her little package of them*.
Horatio: Okay! *scurries off and disappears*
About two minutes later she hears furious squeak yelling, Horatio reappears holding a mouse by the scruff of its neck in his mouth “I found one!”
Ixayl’anu: Where’s the cage you keep the rats from? To put the mouse in?
Phi: We sold the cages, the carrier is Horatio’s home...there’s this box?
Ixayl’anu: Yeah that’ll do.
They find a box of rocks to gently empty real quick and put the mouse in it/close the lid (15 animal handling check).
As soon as Horatio had dropped the mouse: “Gummy owlbear please.”
Phi: He knows fetch now!
Ixayl’anu: All that training you’ve been doing with him is paying off! *taps box* Hello?
Phi: Ask if it if it talks like that if it knows it’s doing it or ask if it knows any dragons? I don’t know?
Ixayl’anu: Right?
Mouse is bouncing around in the box trying to get out.
Rana head canoned the rats as 400-550 grams
Horatio is gaming the system a little bit and only found a wine gummy to eat, never officially given one (Phi bought fancy rat treats for him)
(More things I missed and wrote down as “Talking to mouse ah 2”)
The mouse is screaming obscenities at Ixayl’anu.
Horatio is on his back in 7th heaven and suggests she should also give the mouse a gummy owlbear, maybe it’ll talk then.
Ixayl’anu sneaks in a smaller portion and it takes awhile for it to calm down and then it’s quiet for a little bit after until... “This doesn’t make us friends!”
Ixayl’anu: You want more? I’ve got more.
Mouse: I mean...yes
Ixayl’anu: I’m not planning on keeping you here I just want to ask a few questions
Mouse: More first
Ixayl’anu: Okay *puts in other half of gummy*
Mouse is very very quiet
Ixayl’anu taps the box: Hello?
Mouse (slurred): What do you want?
Ixayl’anu: Where’d you learn to talk like that
Mouse: I always talk like this this is how mice talk
Some similar back and forth about this.
Mouse (when asked about dragonborn/people like Ixayl’anu): People like you don’t come around here.
Ixayl’anu: Really? Oh… (to Phi in common now) I don’t this is how they talk, this is weird.
Phi: I think they just don’t know, they don’t know that they’re weird, you know
Ixayl’anu: But horatio thinks it’s a weird dialect
Phi: Did you ask if it if they saw any dragonborn? Or dragons?
Ixayl’anu: Well they haven’t seen anything like me (then to the mouse in draconic) Have you seen anything big with wings?
Mouse: Yeah outside but I live in this house I don’t have to worry about that
Ixayl’anu: Are there any mice that you can’t talk to?
Mouse: Everybody kinda talks like this around here
Ixayl’anu: Kind of or they do?
Mouse: They do?
Ixayl’anu: They all speak this...they all...speak this...I’m really confused.
They decide to try and wake Diem up for a third opinion, and it takes awhile before Diem’s patron allows it, letting Diem know that their friends need them for a moment, so they will have to continue catching up later.
Ixayl’anu as Diem finally starts waking up out of sorts: Weird things are happening
Diem continues to be out of it enough for a bit until eventually Phi catches them up - including the detail about Rana meditating in a cloud of sheep.
Phi (to Diem about the mouse in the box: It’s drunk
Diem: Are you guys sure you’re not drunk?
Phi: I’m not sure we’re not dreaming
Ixayl’anu: This isn’t dreaming not even close.
(I didn’t tag these two responses so the first might be Ixayl’anu and the 2nd Phi)
Too tired to bother with ritual magic, Diem uses a slot to cast comprehend languages.
Mouse asks if we’ve got more of those treats, which Horatio hears and says “Yeah! I’ll eat another!” *perks up*
Diem translates for phi who turns sharply to Horatio to talk about how many he’s already eaten and how he got one in the first place to ask Ixayl’anu for another, etc.
Horatio looks sheepish: Weeeellll sometimes you don’t secure your bag very good and I was hungry and they smelled good.
Phi smirks and retrieves Ixayl’anu’s package of owl gummies, then gives half to Horatio, and half to the mouse.
Horatio: YES! (helping her), I want this one I want the bigger section ‘cause I’m bigger and I get the big one (little grabby rat hands)
Diem does a history check on any stories they might have heard about talking animals like this (21). There are plenty of fairy tales with talking animals, sometimes it’s afey kind of thing - playing a prank on people. They’ve heard of similar events happening before, pretty disparate not tied to one physical location. Sometimes they’ve heard stories of animals in an area like within a mile circle will be able to speak draconic or sometimes other languages, not really a pattern to it. Sometimes it’s little towns, other times it’s connected to a whole city. Might be a natural phenomena. Specifically tiny beasts/birds/lizards are usually the type able to speak.
They also know various fae and wish spells can make this happen, but still they’re just random.
Diem shares this with Phi and Ixayl’anu.
(Insert missed conversation here)
Horatio or the mouse (not sure which): Yeah sure sometimes you say words that are funny and I don’t really understand what they are and they kinda sound like that and I don’t know what they are.
?: All the fangs or one specific thing? (I have no idea who said this or where fangs come into play)
We discover the mouse once met a gopher, stuck his nose in its burrow and it yelled at him back in draconic.
Diem to Ixayl’anu: Ask the mouse if it knows any fae in the area
Mouse makes an intelligence check when she asks, but does not know what she is talking about.
We confirm the mouse has always spoken draconic
Diem tells a quick rendition of cinderella as an example of fae meddling with small creatures where dress making is also involved (theorizing that perhaps Rana’s mother gets help from the mice as well)
We’re fairly certain it’s a normal mouse though and it’s now snoring softly so we’re not getting any more info.
Horatio by now is sprawled out on the bed, Phi cuddled around him while Diem gives him scritches. At a loss, we all go back to sleep for now, planning to ask Rana more in the morning.
(Good Morning!)
In the morning Phi will figure out the coffee situation and make some for everyone.
Romy (waking up to this): This is such a nice change of pace, somebody making the coffee for a change, and friends Rana brings in not destroying the house by the time I get up.
Phi: It’s no problem, I was just watching Rana from the window and figured she’d really like some, she’s gonna be tired so I can make sure coffee is waiting for her. We do have quite a story to tell her though.
Romy shows Phi where the biscotti is and such.
Rana is just now getting up and plucks Hamlet up.
Elk: something happened something happened something happened
Rana is feeding the sheep and clearly thinks the elk just wants some too
Elk: Oh is it breakfast? I’d like breakfast too!
Diem, after sleeping on it, performs a new arcana check on what sort of spells and effects cause draconic-speaking critters (21 again). They know now it can be caused by fae, wish spells, high level wizarding things will happen, and that similar strange effects happen around ancient dragon lairs (a little nugget buried in all their Miova dragon research they’d forgotten about), and that sometimes it’s just random without no discernible cause.
Rana comes in covered in sheep wool, hay, butt and legs wet, but she’s happy. Everything outside is noticeably green and lush.
Phi: We made coffee
Rana is super grateful and makes a beeline to grab a cup.
Rana: I took care of the plants and the animals
Ixayl’anu comes down around this time with the mouse in the box.
Romy: Your friend made coffee and something happened last night they were just about to tell me about.
Rana statues over her mother’s words with an ‘oh no what kind of things?’ sort of reaction.
Phi we’ll explain: Where’s Hamlet? Is he in your bag? Wait I’ll go get Horatio (who is snuggling Diem upstairs still)
Rana scritches Hamlet who asks “Oh is it breakfast time?” (in draconic) She’s tired enough she just hands it the biscotti without thinking.
When Phi returns she gets down on her knees in front of hamlet with horatio
Phi: What about today? What are you speaking today?
Speaking to her around his mouth of biscotti “I dunno what am I speaking today?”
This pings for Rana like hey…
Diem comes down as Ixayl'anu is talking about what happened.
Rana healing words the mouse. 7 pts healing. He immediately wakes up and feels great.
Mouse while cleaning his face: I feel really great?!
Ixayl'anu: You want some biscotti?
Mouse (very distrusting): Yes...
She sets the biscotti down. After awhile she’s half grinning and looking at her mom now.
Rana to the group: They just do that around here, always have.
Romy: That’s why the rumor mill here is so lively.
Diem: Why draconic?
(missed conversation)
Rana: Most people understand at least a few words.
Diem: What’s the local lore on it all? I mean...there’s gotta be stories involved?
Romy: The local lore - I did ask around since I’m not from here, it was very strange at the beginning but the townspeople didn’t seem to be bothered, the general consensus is that it’s a blessing of Vkandis.
Diem gets us all talking about maybe the silver scale dragon living nearby as they also share what they remembered about such events after they woke up.
Rana insists she would’ve seen it
Romy thinks you would know though, Diem mentions that they slept with one and didn’t know until the next day though so...
Romy: Rana you did see those kites though (a local cryptid)…?
Rana: That was definitely not a dragon.
Ixayl’anu: Birds? What?
Rana: They almost look like a roc but they’re definitely not rocs (some people write them off as rocs or pterodactyls but the markings are different they are an air cryptid - Ropen from New Guinea).
We get enough from context to realize this is an unusual sighting, but we are not outright told it’s a local cryptid, like spotting bigfoot.
We are told to watch what we say because the bakers bribe the birds and the whole town will end up knowing.
Rana: That thing is def not a dragon though.
Romy admits she’s never even seen a dragon before.
Rana: Diem rode it
Diem (laughing): In more ways than one
Phi laughs too
Rana still insists she would know if one of the townspeople were a dragon though while Diem insists you really couldn’t know that for sure, what if they just enjoyed a simple life and to avoid discovery they just chose a form that aged with the town, no one the wiser. Rana still insists it’s not possible.
Diem: So sure you’d know? We’ve traveled a month together on the road practically living together. How do you actually know I’m not a dragon?
Rana: I don’t.
Prepared for a similar pushback, this admission clearly surprises Diem. “And yet you’re this sure about people you haven’t spent every waking moment with?”
Rana says she thinks if you are not living time people need to know they need to know they will find out what you are doing.
Ixayl'anu: It could just be sleeping somewhere.
Rana: Either way this is just a normal thing
Ixayl’anu: Sure not really but sure.
Diem: Could be the innkeeper and has always been an innkeeper because they enjoy it. Everybody needs a hobby.
Ixayl'anu wants to know if V’kandis has anything to do with dragons.
(It is at this point we are informed that we’ve seen Romy has a shrine to V’kandis in the house as we’ve ignored this fact in favor of being like oh no, it’s not ‘cause a god blessed your town, it’s because of a secret dragon!).
Ixayl'anu scoots the mouse on his way and turns the topic of discussion toward our reasons for being in Longview and Anesh: So we’re looking for this dwarf?
Rana: No we’re looking for my brother
Ixayl’anu: Does he know where he is?
Rana: Maybe.
Phi: How old is he?
Rana: Older than I am
Phi: Oh, so definitely should’ve had more kids by now
Diem: Wait, Phi how many kids do you have then?
Phi (mishearing): Ooooh lemme get back to you on that...between 80 and 50.
Diem: You have at least 50 kids?
Phi: Oh no I have 0 kids, I don’t have that kind of life.
Rana herds us out the door, she leaves most of her heavier stuff at home.
(To Stellan’s house we go)
For some reason we established Diem definitely gets changed under an illusion of Ixayl'anu ever since using her image as a changing screen back in Budelia. Ixayl’anu has no problem with that, but they’ve all probably seen flashes of Diem’s side and leg tattoos anyway over the month we’ve been together.
Before we leave the house Diem casts comprehend languages as ritual. The birds quiet as we approach, but then the chattering starts up and we catch names and normal gossip presumably about people around town.
Ixayl’anu and Diem have a bit of a side chat about this in the RP text snippets section.
We have an uneventful walk over.
We walk in without knocking - Stell is clearly working on a sword or piece of armor.
Amira (the little girl def notices our presence, specifically Rana’s)
Rana quietly holds out her arms for a hug and Amira runs over squealing with excitement.
Diem: That is so adorable.
Rana scoops her up and has her on her hip now.
Amira looks at us and her eyes get really big - like who are you all? With continued excitement.
Stellan takes notice, surprised Rana brought friends, but still busy hammering out the sword.
Rana: Did you get your pigeons?
Stellan (withering look at his sister): I got THREE pigeons, yes.
Rana grins even bigger at his tone and expression.
Stellan is still working on whatever he’s hammering into during this exchange.
Rana: I was worried they wouldn’t get through so I had to send 3 of them.
Stellan: Well they all got here - first one was very surprising, after 3 though...
Phi: What was the message again Rana?
Rana: Oh, I sent him pigeons telling him about the meteorites and that we knew they were going to hit Anesh but we didn’t know where.
Stellan lets us know the meteors have been diverted and are scheduled to hit somewhere in the desert where there are no people.
Rana nods
Diem: Did they use magic to divert them?
Stell: You’re not from around here are you? Must suck to be from a place without a god that cares what happens to you.
He is a BIG guy. He stops hammering to shake our hands
Phi shakes with both hands to see how much she can get them around one of his (she can’t, there’s a gap between her fingertips).
He is very amused to have Phi forcibly shaking his hand with both of hers.
Meanwhile, Hamlet pokes out and gets on Rana’s shoulder to investigate the new passenger on Rana’s hip.
Amira: You have a new pet?
Rana: Yes, but this one is coming with me - you can still play with him for a bit.
Hamlet: What?
Amira in draconic: Wanna be my friend and play?
Hamlet: Okay!
Diem said some things during the exchange I forgot to note (probably a few cool stories about auntie Rana idk, asking about her speaking draconic?) that resulted in Amira excitedly adopting them for a tour of the house/playing with Hamlet. They follow Amira’s excited lead to do just that, but not before stopping near the next doorway for introductions to Adri, her mother.
Diem to Adri: She’s very adorable
Amira (talking about Aunt Rana): Look! She has a pet rat can we have a pet rat too?
Rana: I could probably get them a pet rat?
Adri: I could probably also get them one, if they’re responsible enough and can prove they’re ready to take care of it.
Some possible missed conversation before Adri, Amira, Diem, and Hamlet head deeper into the house while Rana continues talking to her brother.
Rana asks about the dwarf and shows him both the letter and silver scale, which he looks at while listening to the story about the wizard in the shadowoods
Stell: Are you sure it was Haldric that they wanted?
Rana: Yes (she double checks letter)
Stell: I know a Haldric Ironband but he’s a master blacksmith, but I...he...he’s never mentioned anything about wizards or honestly going anywhere so far away?
Rana: To be fair the wizard seemed to know who I was so maybe Haldric never met him either.
Stell: I don’t know this sounds like destiny hero bullshit
Phi is internally happy screaming about oh my god this actually works (it’s just as well that I never noted what actually works since the rest of us might only notice Phi’s happy scream state, rather than mind-reading the reason for it)!
Everyone but Diem learns this shorthand info I can’t entirely follow after the fact. My shorthand is awful and I’ve discovered I am unlikely to remember how to coherently type it later: Bhuxodihr for some reason you do want to mention t by the proper name he’s mostly retired, teaches to a select few, not stellan’s master. Haldric was stellan’s master’s master
Rana holds up the silver scale (again? I guess? lol) “You know what this would signify?” she hands it over to him. “Retin said we could use this, that it would give us legitimacy”
Stellan tests the hardness of it, getting higher and higher and Rana lets him and still nothing happens “Uh…(hands it back) I’m pretty sure this is the real thing.”
Rana: Real dragon scale?
Stellan: Mhm
Rana: Well that’s interesting
Stellan: Who did you say gave this to you again?
Rana: Retin, a wizard who lives in the Rethwellian Shadowoods
Stellan: I think Haldric knew someone down there but they weren’t genasi
Phi and Ixayl’anu tell him that we had a whole argument about it and deduced that Retin takes on the form of whatever will make you feel connected/more at home.
Phi or Ixayl’anu bring up how weird it is that all the animals here speak draconic.
Stellan, however, has hit his limit for weird shit, though not animals speaking draconic - that is a thing that’s completely normal.
Phi awkwardly: You should come visit us some time too, was great meeting you...or...yeah.
Ixayl’anu: Where would he meet us?
Phi: I have a home
Ixayl’anu: But you’re not really there
Phi: Well we can arrange it ahead of time.
Rana: She does have connections in Miova if you every go out that way.
Stellan says some things to Phi about all this, but as he’s talking he looks at her and she sees the moment when he notices her daggers and stops.
Stellan: Where did you get those?
Phi: They’re family heirlooms
Stellan: Nooo….where did you really get those? You can’t take those into stone roost or even bouldergap, not displayed on your hips like that.
Phi: Interesting you say that I was already thinking I should hide them because we found them on the skeleton of a dwarf in a cave in the woods
Ixayl'anu: No it was a corpse
Rana statues a little bit (which Stellan would notice)
Phi: There was a dwarf corpse, yes…
Stellan holds his hands up like ‘I don’t want to hear it’ and points at Phi: You cannot wear those, they’re only given to an elite group of dwarves and they do NOT give them to gnomes, you have to keep them hidden.
A few questions are asked about that. As far as Stellan knows, they’re assassins of some kind.
Phi: So do they have other weapons with the same characteristics?
Stellan: Sometimes they have short swords but not any arrows or large blades - just the small bladed weapons and it was a thing he wasn’t allowed to learn because he’s not a dwarf.
Phi: Do you know anybody who was in this group?
Stellan: No mostly these guys are like--
Rana (talking over him): I don’t think my brother knows any dwarvish assassins
Phi: If I were to return them to the right people, who would I talk to?
Stellan just looks at her for a few seconds: I don’t know if you just heard me but these guys don’t really advertised themselves
Ixayl’anu: Is this a group we wanna have anything to do with or just avoid them?
Stellan: If you’re really determined to get them back to someone, you might try Haldric, but I wouldn’t lead with that.
Ixayl’anu: Are they better to just be avoided?
Stellan: I wouldn’t wanna mess with them but you’re all out there dealing with meteors and who knows what else so maybe that’s what you do now, I don’t know.
Rana: This dwarf found the meteor too and turned into a mushroom
Stellan takes a deep breath.
Rana is enjoying making him uncomfortable now
They all talk about our bag of holding and hiding the weapons, Phi stashes them and pulls out her ordinary daggers to secure in their place.
Rana as they talk about possibly disguising Phi’s daggers: Oh mom has some camels now if you need one, there’re 3
Stellan: Okay I’ll take care of them for you
Rana: Do you want them to talk? I can make them talk.
Stellan (not amused): No, the pigeons are enough.
Phi: Thank you for the information
Rana: Yeah, I would like to not get killed by the people we were looking for
Phi: Yeah that would not be good
Rana: I’m gonna go corrupt tanny for a bit
Stellan: Yeah i’m gonna go back over here and...think about things
Rana: I let mom know everything so you can talk to her later.
At some point before they finish talking to Stellan, Ixayl'anu was looking for signs of jewelry in Stellan’s forge. She saw some platinum but didn’t really see any jewelry (because she needs a platinum ring). She asks him about it anyway while we’re there and it’s simple enough he melts down two platinum coins to make a simple ring for her out of it. He doesn’t even charge her for them since he already has the forge fired up.
He does have Amira help him since he rarely works with platinum and it makes a good teachable moment that takes about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, Adri has been following Amira and Diem around, Diem gets introduced to Taniel, 10, who probably is working on magic homework, they got really into potion making because they fan Rana and Rana brings herbs back - real into that right now.
Taniel gets up to see Aunt Rana, but Adri warns her to wait a bit they’re talking about tense things right now.
Through conversation along the tour Diem gets that Adri speaks draconic and has been teaching her kids.
Diem makes casual conversation that includes whether or not Adri grew up here and when/why she learned draconic.
About that time Rana walks in and Taniel gives her a big hug and tells her about her new obsession
Adri answers Diem that it makes sense from a guard’s stand point so she learned it, birds are awfully helpful
Diem: Oh yeah that makes sense
Rana: Yeah, Adri is very good at her job
Diem: You look it, you are killing it in that outfit (she is amused), I’m...yeah, not surprising I wouldn’t make a good guard, I even need help when we take watches (said in good humor)
Ixayl'anu stands awkwardly in the door until Adri invites her in properly (because she’s secretly a vampire! shhh)
Rana: We’re not gonna be in town for terribly long, I was just hoping Stellan had some of the info I needed and he did.
Adri: What info?
Rana: Oh I was sent by a wizard to find someone named Haldric who might be in stone roost and I thought Stellan might know him.
Adri takes it in stride “Well, be safe.”
Rana drops in that it has to do with the meteor.
Nearing the end of the conversation and visit, Phi asks if we can run by a general store to get medical kit supplies to complete her partial kit.
When we have to leave Amira is sad about the rat having to go and starts asking for a rat again in super sad puppy fashion.
Adri tells her they’ll still have to see and Diem distracts both children by pulling out the self-animating putty to give them as a gift, telling them how they can shape their own rat or whatever they like and it moves (makes a little rat and sets it down to walk around on the table and lick a paw clean) see?
Their imaginations take off with excited chatter about making tiny dragons and more, once again happy.
(A trip to the general store)
Rana takes us to Bafor’s general store (Bafor is a dragonborn).
Phi tells us that we would have noticed how Phi progressively jumped on this field medic train and as things have gotten dangerous and sketchy. Phi realized it would be handy to have some skills in healing just in case - more so ever since Phi found the medical supplies in Budelia and ever since Averni she’s been doing a little research here and there, including medical knowledge heading out into the new terrain of Anesh, like what to do for heatstroke and working on more survival skills. Over the journey she’s brought it up a few times to Rana and Edea, and Rana readily taught her some of her new feat requirements from her similar healer feat. Phi wants to eventually learn to make her own poisons too for maybe a damage over time, but also poison check and knowing what to do about poisons in order to help heal them.
Phi’s medicine check will also apply to her background skills, diagnosing a wound, how they died (starving, madness, dehydration, container recently held poison, blood spatter analysis, forensic stuff is part of her past).
Combat triage is cool and useful.
Ruled that with her medical proficiency feat she can diagnose poisons and such, but she would have to take a separate feat to make a poison and do dmg over time.
Phi walks into the store and admits she’s filling out the healer’s kit.
Rana says she has those items already and they have this conversation in the store. All along though she and Rana have talked about this over the month we’ve known each other.
Bafor: Yeah I have the little items, but you could also just buy a new healer’s kit already filled.
Phi: Yeah why don’t I just do that.
Bafor: Tell you what, you buy a whole healer’s kit and I will fill out your other one for free.
I think we hit a fruit stand or a different store where the vendor is gruff but warms up as we spend money (because that was a note for the vendor attached to all these dried fruits, but Bafor seemed pretty amenable from the start).
Phi and Diem also buy a big bag of granola for a silver each, and some dried fruits (Anesh grows pomegranate, apricots, olives)
Diem also buys a bag of mixed dried fruit, dried apricots, and a pomegranate (for a silver each)

Tolkien/Middle Earth Headcanons: Winter and Snow!
Tumblr media
Tolkien Headcanons/Imagines: Snow
Plus Size Reader, PS Reader Tolkien Character, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit
Winter Activities!
Tumblr media
Legolas:   The prince of the Woodland Realm is all about hunting this time of year.   Yes, it's cold.  Yes, it's dreary.  But man, the game is truly spectacular.   To be honest, he usually does his ACTUAL hunting when you're not with him.  It's not because you can't keep up because you're awesome and can slay like no one's business.  But if Legolas has managed to get you out away from the kingdom...in the privacy of the woods...with the possibly of getting you cold and letting him warm you up?  Well, he's not an idiot.   He doesn't squander such lovely opportunities.
Tumblr media
Aragorn:   Lol, 10/10 you're out riding horses.  Probably scouting but just using it as an excuse to get in a ride.   You most definitely did not throw that snow ball that hit him smack dab in the face.   And he most definitely didn't pull your ass off your horse by the leg.  And ya'll most certainly didn't have it out in the snow.   No, never you two.   Noooooooo. ;)
Tumblr media
Frodo:   Sweet Frodo Baggins reads you a book as you mill about outside.   You're a busy little bee and while he likes to take him time and relax, he sure does enjoy accompanying you on whatever it is that you've decided to do at that moment in time.   Even if what that is, is probably going to get you both in trouble.  Frodo is in love with The Shire but it pales in comparison to his love for you.
Tumblr media
Sam:   An exciting trip to the market!  It's lively even in the cold of winter!  Everyone is out and about with harvest from the summer!  Dried fruits and vegetables!  Jars of preserves! And possibly his favorite!  The fresh food!   Fires blazing with pots of soups and stews bubbling away for sale!  Hot mead and spiced cider!  Sam either offers you his arm or holds it snugly around you the entire time!  The two of you keep warm but cozying up and filling your bellies!  You return home to your cottage with full bellies, baskets of food and ready to snuggle up by the fireplace!
Tumblr media
Merry:   Merry probably takes you for a date at the Prancing Pony!  The two of you take Bucklebury Ferry across the Brandywine River to Buckland and then on to the Pony.    You probably have a nice meal there with a pint of ale.  Merry had arranged a room for the two of you for the night just so you can get away for a bit.  You probably mill about town the next day, collecting this and that before heading back home to The Shire.   Adventures don't always have to be half way across the world, you know. ;)
Tumblr media
Pippin:   Oh, Pippin, lol.  You are the spark to his flame so whenever Gandalf is near he gets as many fireworks as he can.   Pippin probably gets you all cozied up for winter temperatures and prepares a picnic.  You argue with him about how impractical it is to have a picnic in the dead of winter.  However, you go because you love him.   When you reach your destination and he builds a small fire to keep you toasty.  You admit it's nice.  Eventually darkness is on the horizon and you pack up to go back home but he's disappeared.  Not in the mood for his games, you almost throw a fit.  However, you nearly jumped out of your knickers when you heard an explosion.  You search it out only to find your crazy love.  Soot on his face and hair a mess.  The poor fireworks exploded in his face, lol.
Tumblr media
Boromir:  Ah, the Captain.   There he was with his men in a very important meeting when something hit the window.  At first, he ignored it but then again...and again.  Eventually he checked it out only to see your cheeky grin as you teased him.   He scolds you but you only shake your bottom at him and run away.  He shakes his head but returns to him men with a much merrier look to him.
Tumblr media
Thorin:   Without a doubt, he's working the iron.    Before the journey back to Erebor whilst he worked as a talented blacksmith...you were his ever faithful wife. On cold winter days, like this one, you made sure your duties were finished rather quickly and you took him lots of snacks.  The forge was warm from the roaring fires and he usually ended up with his shirt open a little.  You'd sit, wrapped up in furs, watching the sweat roll of your beast of a husband and you can bet your sweet ass that you weren't cold anymore.  Also, Thorin - the cheeky shit- knows this.  It's why he kisses you sinfully on those days.   Like a mouse to cheese he leads you to him.   He quite enjoys watching his little wife all hot bothered for him.  Makes it even better when he takes you at the end of the day.
Tumblr media
Dwalin:   Dwalin is out chopping wood to feed the fires necessary for winter. And you?  You follow him...because that's just how you are.  And also because you would rather DIE than miss watching your husband's muscles ripple.   He tells you if you're going to come along then you're going to hurt.  You and he both know perfectly well that you're more than capable of cutting wood.  And damn good at it.  However, you fake it everytime just so he'll stand behind you and 'show' you what to do.   It's become quite a routine for the two of you now.
Tumblr media
Bilbo:   You and Mr. Baggins enjoy some pipeweed on the front stoop for a while before retiring inside to enjoy some delicious meals and perhaps a bit of song if he feels inclined.   Also note: when Bilbo's been on the pipeweed, he's a little handsy.   Think about the lovey dovey potheads you might know.  That.  It's literally that, lol.
Tumblr media
Bard:  Bard watches from the window as you play with his children out in the snow.  Snowmen, snowball fights and just flat out chasing each other until you all fall down out of breath and make snow angels.  You grin up at him and his eyes twinkle from pure adoration.
Tumblr media
Thranduil:   The King of Mirkwood takes you for a ride on his elk.  The forest is absolutely spectacular and it twinkles from icicles shining in the sun! The guard is near but he doesn't care for their eyes so he snatches you around in front of him for a bit more privacy.   He simply shrugged when you give him a look.  "I wanted a little more privacy for us." he simply replied and the two of you kept riding on.
Tumblr media
Fili: The young King in Training was in meetings with his uncle and the advisors all day.   Kili was supposed to be there but he'd snuck away.  The two of you waited until they all got inside before you pressed your noses up against the window.  Fili nearly spit out his tea when he saw your ridiculous face.  However, he lost it when Kili's tongue got stuck to the metal framing of the window.
Tumblr media
Kili:   Target practice. Effing target practice. In the freezing freaking rain. "Kili, I'm freezing!" "Good, because when it matters you'll already be frozen.  It'll be deadly temperatures and it'll be raining so hard that you won't even be able to see your hand in front of you face." "If I die from the sickness, I'm haunting you forever." "Good." he said. "I'll make sure to play all your most hated music then." You had to resist the urge to shoot him in the foot. He pulled you into his arms and kissed you beneath your earlobe. "Now what?!" You exasperated. "You hit this target, in the rain, freezing, with me lighting you up....and I swear I'll sharpen and clean your weapons for a month." You'd never loosed an arrow so quick in your life.   And hit the target on the first try. Also, Kili had never rushed you back to the room and peeled your clothes off so fast in HIS life.
Heeey, smoochies! I hope you enjoyed this bonus content for Smoochmas! !  If ya like it, please be sure to let me know in the comments and check out my masterlist! Link on profile!

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
Inspired by hunting season, Steamboat cuisine in late fall is all about wild game. After the fall harvest has long since passed and the first snow has already blanketed the soil, farm to table cooking turns from local produce to wild game.
This is especially true for private chefs like Dave Demos, owner of Ski Town Gourmet, who can take liberties with hunted fish and game that isn’t possible in a restaurant’s commercial kitchen. “Wild game has creatively shaped my culinary style,” says Demos, who moved to Steamboat from Maine in 1997. “Cooking for my family and friends with Rocky Mountain ingredients was something I quickly began to enjoy.
”Wild game is to Colorado what fresh seafood is to a coastal town, evoking a literal translation of the flavor of the land. “The flavor profile of the meat mimics the area where the animal is from,” Demos says. “Like the terra firma of a grape varietal, you can taste whatever the animal was eating, whether it’s the sarvis berries of a quail or the sage that can come through in elk, it really brings that natural flavor profile you don’t find in grocery meats.” To prepare a meal for in-home fine dining, Demos treats wild game using fat and acid to balance out the gamey flavor that might be off-putting to someone who isn’t used to it. Think: bacon wrapped pheasant with balsamic mushroom glaze or elk summer sausage served with pickled peppers and gorgonzola cheese.
When handled and prepared properly, wild game is a big part of the Steamboat experience. Not to be confused with a delicacy that might require a more adventurous palate, wild game is an integral part of Steamboat’s ranching history and vast wilderness—easy on the eyes and the stomach but even better, filling for the soul.
Elk
The crown jewel for Colorado hunters, these large and beautiful animals provide ample quantities of meat. Its flavor profile is similar to beef but leaner and with subtle earthy notes of grass or berry, depending on where the elk was grazing, that lends a subtle complexity that isn’t found in grocery store meats. “Because it’s leaner, it’s much harder to cook,” Demos says. “I like to serve it rare to medium-rare.” Also similar to beef, the preparation of the elk is going to depend entirely on the cut. “The tenderloin is going to be the best, like the filet minion of elk,” Demos says. He likes to sear it rare with a demi glaze and wine sauce with mushrooms. Sausage is another great preparation for elk, and Demos says one of his biggest sellers in the elk and cherry sausage appetizer he serves with sweet cherry peppers and gorgonzola cheese.
Bison
Another lean meat, bison requires careful preparation. Its mild flavor lends itself to a blank canvas for seasoning similar to chicken. “In summer I grill a lot of bison steaks and I’ll play with different South American or Southwestern flavor profiles, like chimichurri or a roasted tomato ancho chili.” Demos doesn’t believe in using marinades for bison or other wild game because he says it masks the natural flavors too much, opting instead for dry rubs and simple preparation on the grill or a quick pan sear to get a little char but without overcooking.
Trout
Colorado is known for its gold medal waters, a designation based on the number of trout that occupy the rivers. Steamboat fishermen can find these jewel-toned fish in the Yampa River as well as in Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach Reservoir. A light buttery fish with a nutty finish, it also mimics the environment it’s from. “The most important thing to consider when preparing fresh trout is that it has to be eaten the day it’s caught,” Demos says. “The trout in Steamboat Lake are pinker and more delicate because they feed on crayfish, and of course any fast moving fish that comes from cold water like our rivers is going to be good.” He likes to keep it simple, cooking filets on the grill with just a little lemon and dill (use foil if you don’t have a flat top) garnished with capers and fresh tomatoes. The hard part? Fileting the fish and getting all those tiny bones out, but well worth the effort in the end.

Schitt’s Creek: The Tragic Backstory and Glorious Redemption of Twyla Sands
https://ift.tt/3w8aa61
Given the title is basically a Schitt pun, it’s perhaps surprising that Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek is one of the sweetest most nuanced shows around. Written by and starring father and son Eugene and Dan Levy it follows the Rose family, once extremely affluent, now entirely bankrupt after a tax scandal, the only asset they are allowed to retain is the town of Schitt’s Creek which Johnny Rose bought for his son David as a joke.
If you haven’t seen the show – well go and watch it immediately (and also spoilers) but know that it takes a couple of episodes to really get into it. Once you’re in, you’re in.
Though there are many things to celebrate throughout the six seasons of the show – its incredible focus on inclusivity and how it handles its LGBTQ+ storylines, Moira and Johnny’s loving and supportive marriage, Alexis and Ted’s heartbreaking romance, David and Stevie’s friendship, Moira’s wigs and much more, there one character who is often on the sidelines who very much deserves to be celebrated.
Twyla Sands, played by Sarah Levy – sister of Dan Levy, daughter of Eugene – is the manager of the Cafe Tropical, apparently the only diner in the town of Schitt’s Creek. She’s a woman with a semi-tragic backstory and a relentlessly sunny disposition – a twist on how the character was initially imagines, according to Sarah Levy.
“She was very nerdy and introverted and there was a sadness to her,” Levy explains on the Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: A Schitt’s Creek Farewell documentary. The decision to turn Twyla into a far more cheerful character brought much humor to the show, so although her brilliant one liners hint at a very dark past her upbeat outlook allows us to laugh rather be disturbed.
When we meet her, Twyla is dating Mutt (Tim Rozon) but it becomes clear quite early on that there’s chemistry between Mutt and Alexis. Mutt isn’t great at communication and it seems like he doesn’t appreciate that true brilliance of Twyla’s asides. During a dinner party hosted by Ted the two bicker when Twyla attempts to introduce one of her anecdotes:
Twyla:I had a best friend that hooked. She married one of her Johns on my birthday
Mutt: It’s not the time, Twyla.
Twyla: You don’t talk all dinner, and now you’re telling me I can’t talk about Trixie?!
Mutt: I’m sorry, it’s just I think sometimes you have a tendency to say the wrong thing, that’s all.
Twyla: Is there a right time to talk about being a hooker?
Could this best friend be the same one she mentions in a later episode?
“My best friend in kindergarten ran away, and her parents didn’t notice, and she ended up getting adopted by this really rich Asian family in Vancouver, but then they had their own kid, so she kind of got neglected a bit, and I can’t remember whether she’s back on the streets now, or…”
Though Twyla is initially planning to write a song for Mutt for his birthday, Alexis learns that he’s planning to break up with her. Instead she encourages Twyla to get in there first and end things with him. It’s an act of kindness, although Alexis does then date Mutt herself.
It’s ok though. Twyla, who has a strong spiritual side (she can see ghosts who are usually angry, has an aunt who has a ghost in her house that keeps leaving dimes everywhere, can read Tarot cards given to her by one of her mum’s ex-boyfriends who predicted to when he would leave her mum, to the day), knows that Mutt was just a ‘placeholder’. Her tea leaves told her that the man she’s supposed to marry is Black.
Twyla’s parents
Twyla’s dad, we learn, is in prison and it’s not clear exactly what for. We do know that he used to be a roadie for the band Fleetwood Mac, though, and that they took out a restraining order against him.

Schitt’s Creek Season 6 Review
By Kayti Burt
Twyla’s mum has a fairly terrible track record with men, and has had numerous failed relationships. She was engaged to two pizza delivery guys, she dated a magician and gambling addict and she was also engaged to a satanist whose snake ate her turtle dove on Valentine’s day. The gambling addict might be the reason why Twyla has been banned from numerous casinos for being an unaccompanied minor. We also know Twyla’s mum is still dating, but these days half the time she thinks Twyla is her cousin Angela. When Twyla’s end of show twist is revealed (more on that in a bit) we also learn that Twy’s mum spent the money Twyla gave her on “a lot of snow mobiles”.
At least Twyla’s mum always comes to her murder mystery nights, even if she does bring whoever she’s dating, and that person usually brings a young friend…
We also learn that one of her step siblings is probably, dead after she and Alexis swap jewelry and Alexis gets her step brother’s dog tags. We said it was dark.
Her extended family is messed up too
Twyla has aunts, uncles and cousins who have equally dark backstories. This is kind of Twyla’s schtick and it’s introduced in episode one when she offers cold comfort to Johnny Rose, after his family has lost everything.
Twyla: I had a second cousin in Elmdale who did telemarketing, he made a ton of money. It turns out his entire business was illegal, and he lost everything.
Johnny: Hm. Not quite the same.
Twyla: Yeah, no, he went to prison, which is terrible, but… But he is learning Spanish, “No mas, le duele!” I think it means, “Stop, it hurts.”
Her uncle also has had problems with debt, she shares
“Between you and me, I know how hard it can be to pay off debt. My Uncle Ken only has three fingers now, which is too bad, because he’s deaf, and he only speaks using sign language, but he made his choices.”
Is this same uncle that had a parrot that kept telling her to take her bra off?
Her cousins don’t seem to have much luck either. We learn that one was in Riverdance until she got trampled.
The Cafe Tropical
Though Twyla has run the cafe for a while and works extremely hard, the cafe tropical, despite apparently being the only place to eat out in Schitt’s Creek isn’t exactly a culinary paradise, and at least part of that is down to some bad decisions on Twyla’s part.
There was the time she bought black market milk and a lot of people got sick. In hindsight it probably wasn’t even cow’s milk – is elk’s milk a thing?
Then there’s the meadow harvest smoothies, which are exactly what they sound like and change every day. And probably don’t order the soup to go – it comes double bagged with a spoon or straw.
Twyla’s glorious redemption
Fittingly, though, by the end of series six, we learn Twyla isn’t such a tragic character after all. In fact, before the Roses even arrive in town she won the lottery, splitting $92 million with one other person. She doesn’t work in the Cafe Tropical for the money, she just enjoys it. By the end Alexis has convinced her that it’s ok to use the money to treat herself to something that she wants. What Twyla wants is the cafe so she purchases it outright, with plans to rename it as Twyla’s Cafe Tropical. And why not?
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
It’s a perfect ending for a character who we have grown to love – she might be ditsy and prone to bad luck but she’s also emotionally intelligent and empathetic often offering good advice to Alexis, showing support and enthusiasm to Moira and bonding with Johnny even though they don’t necessarily always deserve it.
Twyla loves where she lives. She loves her life and loves where she works. Twyla is a wonderful example of a person who knows herself, doesn’t need attention but is a great success without having to shout about it. We should all be a little bit Twyla.
Like Twyla, Sarah Levy isn’t in the spotlight but she’s still a part of the Schitt’s Creek family, so to give her her own joyful denouement is just right. Twyla Sands, we salute you.

Runic Pose Description (Rune Poems quoted are from the Old English version), by Ariel Wolfseeker in collaboration with Whitney Tutor
Fehu: Wealth. Cattle. Gold. Beginning of the Journey.
Rune Poem: (Wealth) is a comfort to every man although every man ought to deal it out freely if he wants, before the lord, his lot of judgement.
In the Fehu stance, face your palms towards one another. Funnel the wealth around you and within you. Assess the blessings in your life and acknowledge what is lacking or what you can part with to bless less fortunate people in your life. Take stock. Fehu is never static and is best shared.
Uruz: Strength. Vitality. Transformation. Healing from the Depths.
Rune Poem: (Uruz) is fearless and greatly horned a very fierce beast it fights with its horns. A famous roamer of the moor it is a courageous animal.
Channel the pose of the indomitable auroch, in Uruz. You can form your hands into fists. Feel the muscles in your shoulders and your back, feel the muscles in your thighs as they tense. Take note of the strength in your body and the potential for power and vitality. Envision that nothing can stand in your way, not even yourself.
Thurisaz: Willpower. Resistance. Opposing Force. The Hammer.
Rune Poem: (Thorn is very sharp; for every thegn who grasps it, it is harmful and exceedingly cruel to every man who lies upon it.
Embody the willpower and spirit of a warrior, become the hammer that swings in Thurisaz pose. Think less and tap into your primal, reactive instincts and natures. Puff out your chest and straighten your spine. Thurisaz is the force that answers and defends against that which would harm. Awaken the will.
Ansuz: The Mind. Consciousness. Speech. Communication. Rune work.
Rune Poem: A (God) is the chieftain of all speech, the mainstay of wisdom and comfort of the wise, for every noble warrior hope and happiness.
Lift your chin and pull back your shoulders as you channel Ansuz. Think of the mechanics your tongue and vocal cords perform when creating the worlds you speak into the world. Feel both the weight of the wisdoms you have collected and the far greater weight of the wisdoms that still elude you. Make use of the endless potential of your own mind, tap into your inspiration and broaden your mind’s eye.
Raido: Riding. Journey. Right Order. Rythym. Progress.
Rune Poem: (Riding) is in the hall, to every warrior easy, but very hard for one who sits up on a powerful horse over the miles of road.
In the Raido pose, we embrace the journey. In what order must things fall in order to progress forward? We place one step forward into the future but keep one foot grounded.  Find a rational pace for yourself, acknowledge where you’ve been running ahead too quickly, or lagging behind too slowly.
Kenaz: Fire. Creativity. Female Power. Torch. Forging. Primal Creation.
Rune Poem: (Torch) is to every living person known by its fire, it is clear and bright it usually burns, when the noble-men rest inside the hall.
With Kenaz, we become the flame that kindles our creativity. Feel the burn in your legs as your muscles stretch. Embrace the feminine, tap into the fire within you. Blaze a path  to discover that which you seek. Find your muse. Allow yourself to find what grips your creativity and become bold enough to bring creation. Sometimes creation is painful and raw, like fire.
Gebo: Sacrifice. Gift. Exchange of Energy. Crossroads. Choices.
Rune Poem:(Gift) is for every man a pride and praise, help and worthiness; (and) of every homeless adventurer, it is estate and substance for those who have nothing else.
In Gebo we stand wide and reach wide. We perform equal exchange of weight on your feet and in our arms. Feel the energy flow evenly. Think of the exchanges that you are part of in your life. What can you share, where are you sharing too much? What can you sacrifice to yourself and to others, where do you sacrifice too much? Strive for harmony and balance.
Wunjo: Pure Joy. Satisfaction. Culmination. Childlike Happiness.
Rune Poem: (Joy) is had by the one who knows few troubles pains and sorrows, and to him who himself has power and blessedness, and also the plenty of towns.
In Wunjo we take on a whimsical and lithe pose. Think about what brings you joy. What gives you genuine and unadulterated happiness? Think of what you can do to bring you wholesomeness and wellness. Summon positive memories and fill yourself with good spirit. Think of the friends in your life and how you can strengthen your bonds, how you can include friend and family. Give and inspire smiles unabashedly.
Hagalaz: The Underworld. Deep Mysteries. Seed. Hail of Destructive Change.
Rune Poem: (Hail) is the whitest of grains, it comes from high in heaven. A shower of wind hurls it, then it turns to water.
In Hagalaz we take on a straining stance. Feet firmly on the ground, hips low to the ground and arms parallel to legs. Remind yourself that after every storm, the sun comes back out. Through destruction, we create new beginnings. An old house must first be torn down if a new one is to be built. Assess the changes in your life, the stressors and the chaos. Think of how you can evolve to conquer that which seeks to tear you down.
Nauthiz: Firestarter. Burning Desire. The Will to Survive.  Need.
Rune Poem: (Need) is constricting on the chest, although to the children of men it often becomes a help and salvation nevertheless if they heed it in time.
In Nauthiz pose we embrace our true desires and needs. Take care to meditate upon what you truly need and what is merely a want. Want versus need is often not so clear. Test yourself. Think of what sparks the things that drive you and let those motivations start the fire you need to catapult you forward to improve yourself, your work and your practices.
Isa: Stillness. Boundaries. Stasis. Stagnation. Solace of Isolation.
Rune Poem: (Ice) is very cold and exceedingly slippery; it glistens, clear as glass, very much like gems, a floor made of frost is fair to see.
In Isa pose, we assume a statuesque and still pose. Our limbs are in stasis, unmoving and not burning any energy to perform any extra motions. In Isa, we can tap into pure concentration, not distracted by anything else. Be still, be silent. Think on what in your life is still and stagnating. What is blocking you, or where are you blocking yourself? What has fallen out of motion? What needs to be silenced?
Jera: Seasons of Change. Cycles of Time. Harvest.
Rune Poem: (Harvest) is the hope of men, when god lets, holy king of heaven, the Earth give her bright fruits to the nobles and the needy.
In Yera pose we form the cycle. To yield a good harvest, we must plant our seeds. What have been the rewards of your hard labor? What have been the results of your actions? What have you made good use of in the never ending wheel, what have you not? What can you nurture in the next changing of the seasons to yield a better harvest and payoff?
Eihwaz: Inner Journey. Yggdrasil the World Tree. Deep Connection. Becoming.
Rune Poem: (Yew) is, on the outside, a rough tree and hard, firm in the earth, keeper of the fire, supported by roots, (it is a) joy on the estate.
In Eihwaz pose, we become the line between the two sides of the coin. Take note of your spine as it is straight, through which your balance and energy travel. Eihwaz connects you from all things above you to all things deep below. Reach within yourself and find root in your mental and spiritual spaces. Set and define your personal limits and boundaries. Think of things that you influence or that influence you beyond the mundane. What are some extremes in your life, how and why do you travel between them?
Perthro: The Womb. Female Creative Power. Divination. The Seeress.
Rune Poem: (Lot Box) is always play and laughter among bold men, where the warriors sit in the beer hall, happy together.
In Perthro pose we open ourselves. What have been some meaningful coincidences lately? Find your spiritual place and look down into the well, to seek what lies within its depths. Become the well as which you can open yourself to be filled with the divine. What might you try your luck at, what can you take a chance on? What have you been counting or gambling on too dangerously?
Algiz (Elhaz): Protection. Valkyrie. Powers of Flight. Connection to the Divine.
Rune Poem: (Elk’s) sedge has its home most often in the fen, it waxes in the water and grimly wounds, and burns with blood any bairn who in any way tries to grasp it.
In Algiz pose, we form the antlers of the elk with our arms, the instruments of protection, the wings to carry us to the spirit plane and the tools that aid us in communicating with the divine. What are things you are passionate about keeping safe? What should you be more active in protecting? Where is your intuition and how can you be more in tune with it? Listen to your inner guides and your animal and spirit guardians. Have you been keeping your ears, eyes and heart open? Use algiz to listen but also to assess where you might need to be careful, when not only interacting with the mundane but also the divine.
Sowilo: The Sun. Lightning. Raw Fiery Power. Light. Honor.
Rune Poem: (Sun) is by sea-men always hoped for when they fare far away over the fishes bath (sea), until the brine-stallion (ship) they bring to land.
In Sowilo stance we form the lightningbolt. Take note of the tension in your whole body and the raw power you possess. Recall the successes and victories you’ve had. Meditate on the most honorable path to your next victory. Question your methods and practices and give yourself raw criticism upon which you can improve. Charge forth and shed light upon mysteries and harness the fire within you.
Tiwaz: Justice. Male Power. The Warrior. Right Action. Truth.
Rune Poem: (Tyr) is a token, it keeps troth well with noble-men always on its course over the mists of night, it never fails.
In the Tiwaz pose we form our hands into fists and stand stalwart and true. Assess yourself and where you have and have not been true to yourself and your beliefs. Recall the oaths you’ve taken and the promises you’ve made. Are you keeping them? Test yourself, your morals and your ethics. Embrace the male powers and the spirit of the warrior within you. Strive for just action.
Berkana: Birch Tree. Mother. Nurturing. Queenly Bearing. Birth and Rebirth.
Rune Poem: (Birch) is without fruit but just the same it bears limbs without seed; it has beautiful branches high on its crown it is finely covered loaded with leaves, touching the sky.
In Berkana pose we take on a vastly different view of the world as we connect our spine with the earth and root our palms and feet with the ground. We form the vessel in which we can nurture, the boat that holds, protects, carries and uplifts. Recognize what needs more nurturing in your life, what needs more cultivating and steering towards higher planes. Recognize if you’ve been keeping secrets and where you need to act with more grace and better bearing. Learn yourself anew and rebirth yourself into a greater state of being. Fill yourself with new perspectives.
Ehwaz: The Connection of Horse and Rider. Emotional Bonds. Partnership.
Rune Poem: (Horse) is, in front of the warriors, the joy of noble-men, a charger proud on its hooves; when concerning it, heroes -- wealthy men -- on war horses exchange speech, and it is always a comfort to the restless.
In Ehwaz we take on the form of the vehicle, the horse, the mount. Feel your spine relax and cave. Delve and understand the connection between rider and horse; both are part of the same team. Recognize your lacking or skill in teamwork. Assess where your loyalties lie, where the loyalties of others lie to you. Who do you trust in. Is your trust places too lightly or too sparingly?
Mannaz: Mankind. The Bonds of Humanity. Civilization.
Rune Poem: (Man) is in his mirth dear to his kinsmen; although each shall depart from the other; for the lord wants to commit, by his decree, that frail flesh to the earth.
In this Mannaz pose we create the seat of civilization with your crossed legs and embrace our bonds with our crossed arms, creating the links of mankind to one another and with the gods. Recognize the connections to the people in your life; those who are living and those who have come before you. Revive your memories. Set goals for yourself on how you can achieve to be more self reliant and be a better impact to those around you. How can you become the best you, that you can be?
Laguz: Emotions. River and Waterfall. Intuition.
Rune Poem: (Water) is to people seemingly unending, if they should venture out on an unsteady ship, and the sea waves frighten them very much, and the brine-stallion (ship) does not heed its bridle.
In Lazug pose we become the water that slips over the cliff, the rushing waterfall or the slowly trickling spring. Envision water in its natural state, as it always finds its way no matter the obstacles. Learn to swim with the flow of the currents. Follow your intuitions. Explore the emotions that flow through you. Are you allowing yourself to feel or are you trying to barricade an unstoppable force? Recognize where you are fighting with the flow of life and how you can chart a more beneficial course through the currents.
Inguz: Sacred Space. Potential for Creation. Fertility.
Rune Poem: ING was first among the East-Danes seen by men, until he again eastward went over the wave; the wain followed on; this is what the warriors called the hero.
In Inguz pose we create a sacred space. Elbows aligned with knees we isolate a place in which we can nurture the potential for creation and personal growth as we set our focus inward. Take stock of where you’ve been applying your energy and focus and see how you can bring some tasks and projects to completion while your attention is less scattered. Cast away all distractions and redirect your energy to what you wish to focus on. Channel and gather your energies for storage or fuel for creation.
Dagaz: Metamorphosis. Balance. The Dawn. Enlightenment.
Rune Poem: (Day) is the lord’s messenger, dear to men, the ruler’s famous light; it is mirth and hope to rich and poor, and is useful for all.
In Dagaz pose we fold our hands over our mind and close our eyes. This pose can be done lying down or kneeling. Our goal is to tap into a consciousness beyond our own, specifically the greater Odinic frame of mind. As we close our physical eyes we open our mind’s eye to uncover, seek out and learn about the mysteries and wisdoms that are beyond our current understanding. We break beyond the limits of our current awareness and that which is already known to us, or test that which we think we already understand. There are many ways to describe a raven and all are true. Think about the runes and how you perceive them, then try to see them from different angles and perspectives. Comprehend that they are multifaceted and vast.
Othala: Ancestors. Personal History. Identity.
Rune Poem: (Estate) is very dear to every man, if he can enjoy what is right and according to custom in his dwelling, most often in prosperity.
In Othala pose, which can be done standing or lying down, we grow roots with our feet and trace our ties to the ancestors through us and create the canopy over the hearth with our arms. Where do your roots lie? How can you connect with those who have paved the path of the futures before you, the ancestors that wove your heritage? Who are you and who were your forebearers? Where lies your home?

Recommended Further Reading on the Runes
The Runes Workbook by Leon D. Wild
Although out of print, this is a great book for beginners on the Runes. Great illustrations and concise information on each Rune.
Northern Mysteries and Magick by Freya Aswynn
An excellent and deeper examination of the Runes to read as your practice evolves. Freya Aswynn is a highly respected and experienced authority on the Runes, Odin and Northern shamanic practices.
Taking up the Runes by Diana Paxson
A heavier tome with in depth discussions on each Rune which includes not only the Rune poems, but a compilation of several author’s views. It also has more information on how to study the Runes and ideas for rituals.
The Poetic Edda
Suggested translations would be Larrington or Hollander, or you can find one online by Chisholm here: http://www.heathengods.com/library/poetic_edda/ChisholmEdda.pdf
Especially read the Havamal, which is the words of Odin, and describes how he got the Runes as well as his words on their use. No study of the Runes is complete without this important work!

D&D session 2 - The gang bugs out
I really want to do a proper write up of session 2 of d&d, but it went for 7 and a half hours, I’m drunk and pretty tired. So ... here’s the lightning round so I can go to bed.  We got a new player this session and she’s a Druid! Raven enters the team and that ends so well.
We had like a day in the city before going south for maybe revenge and also start Raven’s quest to bury her mothers remains. Below is a bulletpoint rundown of everyone’s day because I really don’t want to do paragraphs at the moment, it took me an hour just to fill in my notes for the whole session so I know what happened
- Olgum woke up early and went hunting, he stumbled across some boars really going at it and he decided he really wants some bacon. 2 sneak axe attacks later, the female takes off running and the male turns to fight. - Olgum gets the shit gored out of him and nearly dies before clutching the fight and then also murdering the fleeing female boar and any maybe babies that were in there. - Olgum dings up to level 2 and wanders back to town with a sack of freshly cooked meat and an even fresher gore wound. - He finds an armorer to replace his current leather armor and upgrades to Scale armor and heads back to the tavern to sell some boar meat and basically just hang out till we leave.
- Eridol bangs the shit out of his head after waking up under his cot. Realises Drack dragged him out of the room in the night and sets the cot up right in front of the door as a tripping hazard because Drack now has a -2 for dex after a reroll. Ain’t that a bitch - Eridol orders some breakfast before realising he’s still coated in orc bits and blood from the last battle and goes to find a bath. - He goes and cleans up and unknown to him Core steals a sausage off his plate. (This comes up later for Drack)  - After breakfast, Eridol goes to meet with his good buddy, Sven the creepy skin guy who works out of an unmarked building in a god damn back alley. He picks up his perfectly tanned orc tattoo and Sven offers to show him what he’s doing with the rest of the orc skin he brought in. Eridol agrees and while Sven is out grabbing it, Eridol looks around and realises that this maybe isn’t the safest place and checks for traps ... just in case. Finding nothing but still kind of terrified of this fantasy buffalo bill son of a bitch, he just backs up to the door and stands there smiling because it’s the polite thing to do. Sven wheels out a sewing manniquin with an exquisite looking full length fingerless glove made out of orc skin and cheekily shows a new belt that’s also made of orc skin. he also mentions he’s looking for a white elk’s skin that’s in teh nearby forests. Eridol mentions how awesome they are but Sven realises that it’s tinged with a hint of Eridol reeeeealy wanting to get the fuck out out of creepsville.  - Eridol goes off to find a library for information about the area and what they can expect ( A direct quote from my notes here: “Surrounding swamps contain a fuck you amount of gnolls”) and meets up with Raven who’s looking for information about why her mum got sick when she entered the swamps.
- Drack wakes the fuck up at the crack of noon and nearly trips in my cot before he asks for directions to a bath and orders a damn feast for breakfast to be ready once he gets back. - After a bath he moseys on back to the tavern and passes Core who is just about to eat the sausage he stole from me. Drack believes this is from his breakfast and tries to steal it back.  - It does not work. Once they’re back in the tavern, Drack orders delicious boar meat on Core’s tab. Eridol is still down one sausage. - Drack goes on a damn shopping spree montage. He goes and gets his backback upgraded so he can strap shit to it, he goes to get his sword sharpened and ends up with a loaner sword which looks like a family heirloom while the blacksmith is “examining” his. He fails to haggle with the shopkeeper about the price of crossbow bolts before kicking the door open to leave, encountering Eridol and Raven outside about to buy some weapons, kicks the door back open and buys some other things and just be a huge draconic arse. - Raven buys a shortsword, Eridol buys a skinning knife and apologises to the halfling shopowner for Drack being “short” with her and gives her some extra gold for dealing with him. - We all head back to the tavern to discuss things and get ready for leaving tomorrow. - Heinrik, the NPC we’re helping out find his daughter took a nasty hit last session and despite being healed ended up getting infected so he’s not looking too good. - We all retire to bed, Drack getting to the shared room first and locks Eridol out.  - Eridol’s not having any of this and decides a justice must be done. He goes downstairs and buys a small sack of flour and starts setting up a trap when their room door is opened Drack’s getting a face full of flour. Halfway through setting up the mechanism on the roof, Olgum walks past a half naked gnome, standing on a flipped over bed tying a sack of flour to a light fixture and just doesn’t even acknowledge what’s happening. - Cut to the morning, Eridol’s all clean and dressed, moving his bed into position for a perfect view of the show. Core and Raven pop into the hallway to see what’s happening and Eridol just points to the trap and lies in bed, waiting.  - Drack walks out immediately and gets half a face full of flour and his left side just gets covered. He sees Eridol propped up perfectly with a shit eating grin on his tiny gnome face. Drack tries to flip the cot in a huff. - He fails horribly and walks outside.
(We’d been playing for 4 hours so far. We started at like 2:30/3pm to avoid running too long and still ended at like quarter to 10)
- We go out to leave, Core mentions he’s gotten us some more steeds and true to his word there are now 4 horses between everyone. 4 horses ... for 5 of us. I think I’ll just be riding shotgun in the cart again but nooo. Core (and by extension Logan, the DM) had organised a ride for me as well. That  F U C K E R  trots out a mastiff with a saddle. Eridol just stands there looking at this fucking pupper and then at Core, just going between them for a while swearing in gnomish, equal parts furious because fuck, this is demeaning and just slack jaw amazement that this is a thing. But sadly friends, no one gets to see a tiny man riding a dog today. Eridol takes the dog and jumps into the cart because he’s not leaving Heinrik alone while he looks like death. PUPPER GET!
After like 6-8 hours riding we come across a river and a surprising amount of animal carcasses, all kind of dried up and chewed on. After some poor perception roles we get jumped by 3 swarms of insects and 2 stirges (housecat sized mosquitoes). Cue just terrible rolls from everyone for the entire encounter.
- Eridol takes out a stirge about to latch onto Olgum with sacred flame. - Drack gets swarmed by insects and gets taken down to 2 health. - Raven gets swarmed by insects and moves out to help Drack and is immediately set on by the swarm of bugs with a nat 20 on the reactionary attack. She’s down. - Olgum takes out the other stirge with his longbow and gets swarmed by insects.  - Core throws a chromatic orb at the swarm on Raven. - Immediately fails. Like super hard.  - Suddenly a fucking crocodile bursts out of the river wanting some of the carcasses.  - Eridol immediately want’s that scaly bastards skin and “accidentally” fires off a guiding bolt which misses, thankfully. Before moving up to help Olgum - Drack breaks out of his swarm, fire breaths the shit out of it and lays hands on Raven to get her up. -Raven starts trying to kill the swarm with her longsword, casts speak with animals and bargains with the crocodile for help afterwhich it gets some tasty boar meat. - Crocodile runs up and tries to bite the swarm near her. - Core tries throwing another chromatic orb at the swarm near Raven. It’s a bust
Just to avoid some repetition I’ll describe the remainder. You have 5 armed individuals and a crocodile screaming constantly, flailing about and failing to hit swarms of bugs with swords, hammers and staffs that are right in front of them. I want you to imagine a group of people fighting a swarm of bees with golfclubs ... that’s basically what this was. But we all made it.
- Crocodile goes to get it’s meat payment and we depart as friends.
END SESSION
-Suddenly a guiding bolt of divine energy burns the shit out of the crocodile. Using the advantage, Drack javelin’d it through the heart. Eridol and Drack had a different plan for that guy and the plan is new boots.
- Ecstatic that their plan worked, they both start harvesting the croc to the assumed horror of Raven (I honestly didn’t check, I was busy skinning a crocodile and so damn happy that guiding bolt hit). Eridol takes it’s skin and sweet delicious tail meat, Drack takes like all it’s teeth.
Everyone makes camp on a beautiful beachscape and we leave them for now because it’s 10pm and everyone’s happy and tired. We learn that we got through about half of what Logan had planned for the session.

12 events you won’t want to miss in Colorado this Fall
2019 marks the 160th anniversary of the Colorado Gold Rush, and while settlers originally migrated west in hopes of striking gold, travelers today head to the state to strike it rich with adventures during Colorado’s golden season: autumn. There’s no better time to visit the Centennial State than during the fall months. The days are sunny and warm, while the nights are cool and crisp. Across all four corners of the state, the landscape shimmers with a vast array of fall colors. Here are 12 of the best events for you to enjoy the season and Colorado’s brilliant fall foliage.
Fall tarantula migration on the Comanche National Grassland, La Junta
September to October
Each fall, Colorado’s Arkansas Valley becomes an arachnophobe’s nightmare. During this time, thousands of tarantulas migrate through the area during their mating season. Generally, this peaks sometime in mid-October. The best place to spot this natural phenomenon is on Highway 71, just north of Ordway, as well as on Highway 109, between La Junta and the town of Kim.
ArtoCade, Trinidad
September 13-14
Trinidad’s delightfully quirky ArtoCade will roll through historic downtown in a parade of “artfully enhanced” cars, motorcycles, bikes, trikes, scooters, tractors and golf carts. There’s a lot packed into the two-day festivalincluding an ArtoKids booth for hands-on kiddie fun, a circus-like dance party called Cardango and meet-and-greets with the event’s “cartists.”
Pedal the Plains
September 13-15
Pedal the Plains is more than a bicycle tour; it’s a traveling party packed with boot-stomp’n live music, beer gardens, delicious locally sourced food, interactive educational exhibits and a touch of country fun. The 2019 ride host communities include Holly, Springfield and Lamar.
Snowmass Wine Festival, Snowmass
September 14
A long-standing fall tradition, the Snowmass Wine Festival features a weekend of wine tasting and pairing dinners hosted by the Rotary Club of Snowmass Village. Friday evening features a wine pairing dinner, while the Saturday highlight is a three-hour grand tasting event with wines from all over the world.
Historic OHV Tour, Buena Vista
September 17-21
Riders will can experience four days of self-guided tours through the awe-inspiring backcountry of the Collegiate Peaks range with 12 14,000-foot mountains during Buena Vista’s OHV Fall Color Tour, Sept. 17-21, 2019. Participants will immerse themselves in the fall foliage during these self-guided tours and will also explore old mining camps and ghost towns via high mountain passes where gold and silver ore were carried by mule wagons to the railroads.
FORToberfest, Fort Collins
September 21
Fortoberfest, Downtown Fort Collins’ last music festival of the summer, features a full day of live music on the Choice Organics stage, seasonal microbrews from Odell and High Country Beverage, wine from Wilbur’s Total Beverage and regional German-themed cuisine.
Mountain Harvest Festival, Paonia
September 26-29
Head to Paonia to celebrate this everything-local harvest. From agricultural producers to artists, writers and crafters, this is a true local event. Live music will be playing throughout the four-day event, and there is a Friday night pub crawl. Plus, enjoy all the fall colors along the way to the Western Slope.
Elk Fest, Estes Park
September 29–30
The beautifully haunting bugle of a bull elk is unmistakable, and spectators head to Estes Park every autumn to experience the phenomenon. The elk gather there, at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, to show off for their ladies during the start of the rutting (breeding) season. At Elk Fest, visitors can learn about these beasts’ behavior, observe them in their natural habitat, participate in a bugling contest and see performances by American Indians.
La Veta Oktoberfest, La Veta
October 5
Beer, music and fall foliage all converge during La Veta’s Oktoberfest. This downtown street fair also features a car show, dancing and more than 60 arts and crafts vendors.
Old West Fest, Ridgway
October 11-13
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of True Grit, the movie that earned John Wayne his only Academy Award and was filmed in Ridgway and Ouray County in 1968. The first annual Ridgway Old West Fest will celebrate Ridgway’s brief transformation into Fort Smith, Arkansas half a century ago. Festivities will highlight Ridgway’s film, ranching and railroad heritage and celebrate Western arts and culture.

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
Inspired by hunting season, fall cuisine is all about wild game.
“Cooking for my family and friends with Rocky Mountain ingredients was something I quickly began to enjoy.”
Wild game is to Colorado what fresh seafood is to a coastal town, evoking a literal translation of the flavor of the land.
When handled and prepared properly, wild game is a big part of the Northwest Colorado experience. Not to be confused with a delicacy that might require a more adventurous palate, wild game is an integral part our area’s ranching history and vast wilderness—easy on the eyes and the stomach but even better, filling for the soul.
Elk The crown jewel for Colorado hunters, these large and beautiful animals provide ample quantities of meat.
Bison Another lean meat, bison requires careful preparation.
Trout Colorado is known for its gold medal waters, a designation based on the number of trout that occupy the rivers. Fishermen can find these jewel-toned fish in the Yampa and Elk Rivers (and can keep them from the areas are not designated as catch-and-release) as well as in our area lakes. A light buttery fish with a nutty finish, it also mimics the environment it’s from. “The most important thing to consider when preparing fresh trout is that it has to be eaten the day it’s caught,” Demos says. “The trout in our lakes are pinker and more delicate because they feed on crayfish, and of course any fast moving fish that comes from cold water like our rivers is going to be good.” He likes to keep it simple, cooking filets on the grill with just a little lemon and dill (use foil if you don’t have a flat top) garnished with capers and fresh tomatoes. The hard part? Fileting the fish and getting all those tiny bones out, but well worth the effort in the end.
Foul: Pheasant, Quail, Duck “Wild birds go with anything,” Demos says. “Salad, grains, any vegetable, any sauce. It’s kind of like chicken. You can do anything with it.” These smaller, more delicate birds have higher fat content than chicken, and the skin provides a natural casing. Demos likes to cook the birds wrapped in bacon on the grill for added moisture from the fat and to give it that saltiness. In the fall, he loves to do berry sauces and in summer he’ll make skewers with grilled jalapeno. Now that’s something to tweet about.

Most people think of Santa Fe when visiting New Mexico, but Albuquerque, where Native culture combines with New Mexican and Mexican influences throughout this quirky city, is a fascinating place to visit.
You don’t need to go far to experience the native culture since the state is home to 19 Pueblo tribes, two Apache tribes, and large portions of the Navajo Nation. Albuquerque’s unique culture is unlike any city I have visited. It’s not super cosmopolitan but is evolving in part because the hit TV shows “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” have increased tourism. Also, more than $300 million in public and private investments is reshaping the city’s skyline.. Albuquerque left me viewing my own City of Angels in a new light, with an appreciation of small-town charm and local heritage.
Although tourists still flock to Albuquerque for tours linked to “Breaking Bad,” and the annual international hot air balloon fiesta in the fall, there is more to this city than is apparent at first glance. Don’t miss these unique excursions on your next trip to the “Land of Enchantment.”

Indian Pueblo Cultural Center
The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center offers visitors the opportunity to make traditional Native American fry bread and learn about the history, traditions, and art of the 19 Indian Pueblos in New Mexico. The shop was one of the best I visited for handcrafted Native American jewelry made from silver, turquoise, natural shell, and gemstones. The restaurant inside called the Pueblo Harvest Café serves samples of food from all 19 New Mexico pueblos with a unique pre- contact menu. Sample pre-contact foods and post-contact seasonal selections include: blue corn onion rings, fried Kool-Aid pickles, bison enchilada, rabbit, braised elk on corn polenta, green chili stew, black bean patty burger, and pan seared New Mexican “tribal trout.”
National Hispanic Cultural Center
Don’t miss the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s impressive modern art collection with a thought-provoking exhibit on race, gender, immigrants, and equality called Because It’s Time, Unraveling Race and Place in New Mexico that runs thru early 2019. The collection rivals museum exhibits in LA and NYC with its provocative ideas artistically expressed in bold, unique ways. The Center’s expansive campus celebrates Hispanic and Latin American culture and includes several performance venues as well as houses a 4,000 square foot bold colorful concave fresco painting inside a tower. The largest fresco in North America depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history showing diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. Take time out to sit and gaze in awe at this impressive creation by Frederico Vigil, completed in 2009.

Sparkling Wine, Sweet Wine
Photo: Melissa Curtin
As a Californian, I couldn’t imagine the landscape in New Mexico could hold and grow vines, so when visited Gruet Winery, I was pleasantly shocked by the quality of the bubbly at this adorable wine tasting room where in 1984 French Gilbert Gruet brought his roots from his champagne house in Bethon, France. Pop in for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay-based sparkling dry wines. Don’t miss the Sauvage Vintage 2011 or Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2012. Taste 5 wines for $13. The family owned winery has found a way to take advantage of bone-dry soils, high elevations, and the dramatic day to night temperatures. Sheehan Winery is another award-winning New Mexico wine made in small batches and quite sweet, which is the way the local New Mexicans prefer it. Perhaps the smallest winery in the world, the owner Sean Sheehan hosts complimentary tastings by appointment in his very own backyard where it is made, and the vineyard takes part in wine events throughout New Mexico a few times a month. Sheehan is gurgling over with passion for his wines and will be sure to entertain you over one of his artistic bottles.
Perfume Workshops with Dryland Wilds
In Albuquerque’s Sawmill District is Spur Line Supply Co, a new, hip, shopping mecca filled with local brands and burgeoning New Mexico entrepreneurs. Inside Spur Line Supply Co, botanical perfumery workshops are offered by Dryland Wilds where you can learn about foraging, and the structure and history of perfume while experimenting with numerous fragrance families to concoct a potion you love. My nose was drawn to jasmine, ylang-ylang, ruby red grapefruit, Moroccan rose, and orange after experimenting with trays of scents based on various categories. Dryland Wilds also takes groups out to New Mexico’s high desert to learn about the native, useful, and edible plants. The women owners use old school perfuming equipment and sell their own botanical line made from wild native plants that they say are “hated or resilient” since popular plants for perfume have become so trendy they have been almost obliterated.

ARTECHOUSE
Newly opened in an Albuquerque warehouse, this interactive light immersion experience called XYZT combines ten digital landscapes for all ages to explore. The immersive sensory encounter lets you feel like a kid as you move your body to influence and play with the light sources on the walls, floor, and more. Art, science, and technology mesh in the newly opened digital art gallery.

The Wild Turkey Federation (WTF) has the largest membership of any single animal conservation group in America. It is larger than the elk or duck groups we may be more familiar with here in the West, but east of the Rockies and in the South there is no comparison. Along with the turkey cult following comes a number of traditions, including what to wear and how to attract birds. Full camouflage with face paint, the latest decoys and game calls are considered necessary and their methods of use, with extensive practice, is required. With this comes an attitude of superiority, like with fly-fishing, where all other methods of harvest are frowned upon or discounted. Yes, wild turkeys have an excellent sense of vision and hearing which makes them a challenge. I, for one, have only succeeded once in my three attempts at the sport. Then there is the other side of the story as told to me by Jason and Jordan Bedard, the sons of my good hunting pal Buck Bedard, a retired three-star Marine Corps general. This is their alternative story. The rest of the story When my brother and I were invited to go spring turkey hunting in Kansas, we were a bit timid to accept. For years, our father and his friends went on and on about game fishing gear for sale the difficulties of hunting the three-foot birds. Tales of sitting against trees until your back hurt and your muscles atrophied were only tempered with talk of not being able to get the gun up fast enough before the birds would spot you and scamper off into the deep woods. Then there was the mystical ability to call in the birds that my brother and I had no clue about. We were stunned with the number of box calls, slates and tools that we would have to master in order to get ourselves a shot. To top it all off, we were lectured on correct shotgun loads and choke selections that made our heads swirl. Always being game for a new adventure, we acquiesced and accepted the challenge.
At Lee's Ferry, you'll move to your luxurious motor coach D. It's not unusual to discover this or outriggers that make the fish catching area larger.
