22. Do they have a fear they want to conquer, but haven’t yet?

Yes, several! He definitely wants to get over/get rid of his fears of failure, abandonment, and disappointment, but those are very, very, very slow-going, and he might not ever get over them entirely. More practically, though, he also has fears of drowning and being watched. Out of the two of them, the drowning  is definitely one he wants to get over, and he isn’t entirely sure why he has it in the first place. The being watched one he finds useful, as it makes him sort of hypersensitive to that kind of thing.

27. What do they never, ever want to speak of, ever?

His anxiety and his pyromania. He just… pretends they don’t exist, and will constantly deny it if it is brought up subtly, i.e, “what happened to your hands/why are your hands bandaged up?”, “you look pretty nervous”, “stop jogging your leg”, etc., etc. However, if somebody actually confronts him about it, or if somebody he loves and trusts asks one of those questions, he will probably break down and talk about it, because he does want someone’s help, but God forbid he brings it up himself– he thinks it would be seen as weakness.

31. Do they have good fashion sense? Or do they just wear whatever?

Sort of both! He definitely likes to be more on the casual side and usually wears a hoodie, t-shirt, and Converse, sometimes with a beanie, as a teenager/in his early twenties, which starkly contrasts with the rest of the family, but, it’s comfortable, and he sort of wants to blend in, look normal, and not make himself appear too conspicuous. In his later twenties and later in his adult life, he’ll still like to look casual, but it’ll be more of a smart casual type thing; a nice coat, perhaps, or sometimes a jumper and scarf, maybe even collared shirts or boots. He does like to make sure he looks halfway presentable, but he doesn’t care as much as, say, his father or his uncle does.

John wasn’t expecting anyone to be coming round, but if there was, they would surely find him asleep in his chair, reclined enough so that he was also cuddling his napping toddler in his arms, the stereo playing some of Sherlock’s favourite violin tunes. Thought they would help Rosie go to sleep since it often worked on himself-----and still worked like a charm.

“Maybe same bone structure? We are both Holmes, and both much smarter than the average person. I guess people just assume we have to be twins, even if I’m actually older.” Her brother probably wouldn’t be very comfortable hearing people assume the two were twins. “I would much rather be your twin than Sherlock or your father’s.”

Perhaps this year, it was time?

The ornaments on the tree stirred, twinkling and gentle, casting reds and blues on the floor. She hadn’t noticed when the lights had been dimmed. Every year, every Christmas eve, it was the same. The clock hand fell into place. It was very late - an hour before midnight.

Turning back to her nephews and niece, Enola undid the clasp of her carpet bag. Yes. Perhaps it was time. 

“I have one last present for you,” She reached into the bag, producing a lacquered black box, ”But you must listen to me very carefully, because this is important.” Enola scanned their faces, one by one, tugging gently to undo the ribbon. “There is a responsibility that comes with this ownership.” 

The lid of the box lifted to reveal an unassuming nutcracker, well-polished but worn in a dark crimson military coat, all rough, chipped paint and scratched, old wood. She caressed it gently, for just a moment, as she lifted it off of the velvet casing, and in the light it was easy to miss the look in her eyes, something almost akin to sadness.

“So,” she smiled, instead, looking up at the others, with a mysterious glint in her eye. “Who is willing to take him? Better think long and hard - this isn’t something you can back out of easily.”

John really hoped it wasn’t going to rain.

Not that he had to worry about his groceries, for he had Elijah tagged along to lighten the burden. How nice it was to have some handy boys around when he couldn’t impose tough duties to his yet-young daughter still at the age to be babysat while he went out. Still, gloomy British weather was a bane if they got caught in it.

       “You alright, Eli? Might have to pick up the pace a bit.”

He checked for the boy over his shoulder. Really should have brought out a raincoat or at least an umbrella. Didn’t Mycroft usually carry one, rain or shine? Paranoid bloke.

“There’s always someone,” She put her hand on his shoulder - it was times like this that she was reminded of how young Elijah still was. “Someone is there to hear you - I’m here, if it’s any consolation.” Sometimes life ached in that beautiful and shattering way only living can produce. Their family wasn’t always good at feelings, even though they tried their best. Growing up, all she had was herself - but Enola would be damned if she let her nephew travel that path alone too. “And if you fall - if you fall, we’ll help you get back up.”

In the moment, she had no idea what to say to Elijah. Because how could she? To tell him he wasn’t broken would inexplicably be a lie. But there was no good way to tell him what she knew from experience. That there was no way to fix it. That looking away, hiding behind makeup and laughter, would not make the cracks go away. Life wasn’t always good - and that was okay. She needed him to know that. Hesitantly, Enola stepped forward. “Elijah,” she hoped that her acceptance and support was clear and bright, flooding through every gesture and word, because this, ultimately, was most important. “You know, don’t you? It’s okay to be broken.”

“Thanks, kiddo,” She reached out to ruffle her nephew’s hair with a tired, joking grin, “Good to know I’m still superwoman to someone.” Enola sighed and leaned back, staring at the sky. “It’s just - well, sometimes you don’t want to be strong and courageous. Sometimes,” she closed her eyes, breathing in,” sometimes you just want a breather.”
