Ever saddle your human girlfriend with the magic fingernails and ride towards the intersection of the memories of three planets? Not yet? Hm. Ah, well, I hope the story has the happy ending they deserve.

Wait, I'm sorry, Loren widowed thrice?? There's Elfangor ofc, and Tobias' fake dad. There's a third??
So. #49 says "Official story: My dad died and my mom walked when I was still too young to remember. The truth: Yeah, my mom walked out, but the man who died had been my stepfather. I had another father... Elfangor." Later on, she tells Tobias "My husband died," when describing what she remembers.
Andalite Chronicles says "I saw Loren, and wrapped around her time line now was another human who would be her mate." And in #23 it says "'Tobias...' He [Mr. DeGroot] leaned across his desk. 'Your father, that father, the man who died? That may not have been your real father.'" But #13 says "I saw my parents, as I remembered them."
So in theory, Loren has:
Husband #1, AKA Alan Fangor
Husband #2, who dies before she or Tobias can remember him
Husband #3, who dies after Tobias is ~3 and Loren has been TBI-ified
The tl;dr is that Tobias's backstory is hot mess no matter which way you cut it. He also says in #3 that his mom's dead and he remembers her, but by #33 he's saying she disappeared and he's only ever seen photos. I think the better explanation is that memory's fallible and Tobias has vague/partial memories of both Loren and his stepfather. But there's always room for a John Watson Has Three Dead Wives, All Named Mary -type explanation.

The story of Tobias' parents are SO tied up with their identities as an alien and a mortal human, I kept rotating Tobias around in my head trying to figure out how I could make him a demigod.
Then I remembered I'm dealing with the Greek Gods and the solution became crystal clear.
Even if it's by way of second-hand DNA, Apollo will absolutely adopt Tobias, no questions asked. Red-tailed hawks can have a loving, attentive parent & a bunch of sunshine siblings. As a treat.

the weird matrix world that elfangor, loren, and visser three make together is one of my favorite concepts in all of sci-fi. i mean come on, it's just such a good story prompt on its own: three different aliens are trapped in a mish-mash dimension made from their own imperfect memories of home. it looks familiar on the surface, but when they give in to that familiarity, they find that some pieces of it are missing and other pieces are just wrong. there may or may not be some greater power responsible for creating this world, and the only chance they have at escaping it is through a time vortex at the world's center, which would displace them from home temporally as well as physically. you could make an entire story out of unraveling this place. it feels like an scp horror story and i mean that in the best way possible.

Summary: After the crash landing, Elfangor finds himself on Earth, alone, the only ones knowing of his presence being the five children who saw him crash. Confronted with the choice to fight or to hide, he chooses to continue the battle.
Author: KimHoppy
Note from submitter: A great fic that asks: what if Elfangor had survived?

Back when I was like six or seven and incredibly stupid, I thought the kid on the cover of the encounter was east asian. I recently remembered this misconception and thought it would be fun to draw Tobias as if he actually was lol
ID: [a digital sketch in red of Tobias from animorphs. He is drawn in human morph from the shoulders up and slightly hunched over, with a vaguely upset expression. He is portrayed as east asian, his hair bleached light but with the roots growing out. He has freckles and is wearing headphones around his neck.] /End ID

What are some instances of retconning in animorphs that you have noticed? (aside from the first book)
Honestly, Animorphs is not bad. Compared to Sherlock Holmes or Percy Jackson, there's hardly any retconning at all. Compared to series like Dune or X-Men that built in-story retcon mechanisms because of the infinite overlapping retcons, Animorphs is practically airtight. Not Harry Potter or Mistborn airtight, sure, but better than any other multi-authored 20+ book series I know.
However, there are some. Ax's mention in #8 of occasional hork-bajir wars doesn't fit with Hork-Bajir Chronicles showing they have no concept of violence before andalites arrive. Cassie's line about "my niece" in #37 is not in line with her saying her parents are her only family in #49. Rachel suspects at times that Jordan's a controller (#12, #22) but in #49 Jordan's dismissed as even a potential threat.
And then there's the absolute clusterfuck of Tobias's parentage.
In #3, he says "my parents died." In #13, it's "both my folks left a long time ago." In Andalite Chronicles, when Elfangor asks about Loren: "She disappeared. When I was just little... I guess she died." In #23, he says "both my parents are dead." But also DeGroot says "Your father... who died? That may not have been your real father" implying a stepfather we never meet. After Elfangor's will it kinda falls into place, but even then...
Elfangor says he and Loren were ~14 mentally, ~18 physically, when they got to Earth, and that "when she was ready by human standards, I married her." He mentions getting multiple college degrees, but that it's only "three years later" that the Ellimist abducts him back to space. No one apparently notices he was gone — Ax has no idea Elfangor lived on Earth, and didn't notice him missing (#8), so... he time-traveled back and lived those three years twice? And no one noticed him being seven years older because... Ellimist fuckery? There's mention of Loren dating someone else after Al's "death", so at least the random step-dad is consistent. But Loren doesn't mention him in #49, so I guess she got remarried and rewidowed between Tobias's birth and his third birthday, and then she forgot him.
Anywhoo, it kind of lines up sorta if you squint, but I'm 99.9% sure that there was some degree of retcon somewhere in there.

hey. hey. ever think about how ax knows how to combine DNA on the fly and only does it once to create his humansona. and then as far as I'm aware this is never brought up again.
(also do you think K.A.A. was Aware they were creating a straight up intersex character, or)
the frolis maneuver is actually brought up one other time, when elfangor makes his human morph and becomes a nothlit to stay with loren on earth. i do think it's weird that i'd only have two nickels, though, because you'd think this kind of insane tech would be explained more or used in other contexts, but i guess there were just. not enough applications for it to matter??? i guess??? even though ax's human morph is commented on in pretty much every book he uses it in.
i feel like, using the frolis maneuver, you could pose as a random controller pretty easily for like, spy-work, at least outside the pool, but who knows. i also wonder how the gleet biofilter exactly works in the books, because from what i'm seeing from a gloss-through (i meant for it to be brief, but it just left me with more questions and now ive been at this for an hour), in the tv show it can sniff out the lack of yeerk in your brain, and in the books the biofilter can't actually detect anything inside the body of anything else??? even though cassie goes through the biofilter with tidwell in her brain, and says it detected "only yeerk and human", exactly ONE book before that the animorphs, confusingly, successfully negate it by sneaking in through the nostrils of a cow...! which seems weird, to me. if the biofilter can detect a yeerk through the scalp and skull of a human, why can't it detect a fly in a cow nose??
anyway, i think you could make potentially infinite random guys to morph into and pose as to sneak past the biofilter. depending on whether it allows non-infested humans through or not. which seems to be a big fat question mark. if so, more "fun" missions to drag tidwell and aftran into!
and as for applegate Knowing she was creating an intersex character, i think that's something you'd have to ask her. super cool that it turned out that way though!

First Impressions of Animorphs!
I'm listening to the Animorphs series while I work, through Animorphs Aloud - a fan made reading of the series. Here are my first impressions/random thoughts about them! Spoilers below if you haven't read them.
Book 12.5: The Andalite Chronicles (Part 3)
Well this part is titled 'an alien dies' and we just lost all the oxygen in the airlock sooo short chapter I guess :D
This might be out of the blue but I want to know more about the real Jahar. What is she like. How's she doing
But he LIVED
Appreciate that, although they do a lot of dumb stuff in Animorphs, they also make smart and logical decisions often. Working together is the only option here, I like that they acknowledge that and don't just start fighting for no good reason
Aaaand then Elfangor just tells the Visser how the time matrix works. You dummy
I wonder why Andalites live in scoops. Seems to be a mostly outdoor area, would it being in a hole not make it prone to flooding? I guess it would keep wind out
Ooooh they've glitched the matrix. The descriptions of the sky being panels of various planets sounds exactly like a texture glitch in a videogame. They've merged all their homeworlds together...that's going to be instant chaos. Andalites charging into Yeerk territory to finish the war while humans stand to the side screaming AAAAA ALIENS
The Andalite method of eating really amuses me. I mean it makes sense! We crush food with our teeth, they crush it with hooves. Though we have to then digest it and they seem to be able to instantly get the nutrients
Ah seems they've created an entirely new reality, not actually merged their real homeworlds. Is this universe they're in the only universe now? Can you just make whole new universes with the Time Matrix...it's like a developer program
WHEEL CREATURES. Didn't do it as well as Mulefa, but still neat
Heh, humans are pretty good at throwing stuff. It's one of our special skills
So Mortrons are like hydras, if you split them in half they form two separate Mortrons, split them in half and you have four. What do you reckon the limit is? Visser Three goes up to sixty four but like...where are they getting the mass from?
Oh my god Loren is mounting the man. That's GOTTA be taboo right?? Be the equivalent of going up to a human, wrapping your arms around them and spooning them from behind. Welp Elfangor doesn't seem to mind. Ride em' cowgirl
And now he's literally munching carpet
...just had a thought. How is Elfangor fitting in this house? It's not a big one, and he manages to climb the stairs. You could not fit a horse in a house surely? Are American houses that big? But he has to be big enough for a human to ride with no problems. Hm
Time Matrix DID create a whole new universe, powered off imagination. I want one. So bad
They've been feeding the humans grass oml 😭
If the food is real, the all-acne-no-eyes guy is also real. Sad for him
A bigmac meal for $4.00/£3.00...TAKE ME BACK
This might not actually be the case for Andalites, but I wonder how a species would evolve if it needed lots of space for each individual. Humans can go real compact with our needs, we can cram so many of us into small spaces and get by (although we tend to go slightly insane when really cramped)
Now he's into being ridden. Boooooooi
...why is time accelerating towards the middle though
aaaaaaa having toenails long enough to stick out of shoes sounds PAINFUL I legit winced at this. Also hair doesn't work like that it has a maximum length
Loren: I'll hit a motherfucker with ANOTHER MOTHERFUCKER
Elfangor: That's Hot
Very climactic final battle and then the Visser just walks away. Bye dude!
Tumblr media
🤨
Most powerful weapon in the galaxy and Elfangor just buries it in the woods. Love it
I like that he got his yellow mustang when he became human
The rules of this timeline Loren has made are pretty confusing. It had to link with the previous kidnapping and acquiring Time Matrix events so the was continuity, but also you can alter it so everyone believes she was always 18, and now this Ellimist is saying Elfangor's brother doesn't exist in this timeline? Why wouldn't he?
Dick move Ellimist. But also, this kid has Elfangor as a dad, but Elfangor's human morph is made up of several other humans blended together. So the kid actually has like...12 dads or something
WAIT IS ELFANGOR TOBIAS'S DAD???
Kind of surprising the Time Matrix didn't just get dug up considering it's now in a construction site
Damn he totally is Tobias's dad. Didn't see that coming
Loren got so fucked over by this whole thing they didn't even ask her if she would be ok with 'fixing' the timeline. Just abandoned and memories erased but I guess not completely because it drove her crazy. Sad
Well. That was a wild one! The books that explore aliens are my favourite and this one was a real stunner, I'm glad we got to meet Elfangor properly and get to know him - makes his death hit way harder now :( Cool that Tobias is technically part alien, and Ax's nephew. Lot of twists and turns in this one I had no idea where they were going to take it. #Justice for Alloran

Man, that's not... even in the top ten. Top fifty. I think Tobias' conception has stopped ranking as that weird, actually.
My favourite weird thing would be the miniature matriarchal alien species lead by the corpses of their captains.
Daily remind that animorphs exists. I used to be obsessed with the series.
Like. Religiously. I would read them.
I think I dropped off after that one book where the 'good guy' alien prince masquerades as a human and gets this other human pregnant before he dies in like the first book in the series
What weird memories of this series do you have, because I think that one's the weirdest
