I saw that a lot of people started thinking that the "halloween themed" food soul incoming that elex announced was Pan de muerto.

I can see why everyone thought that because elex recently has like 0 communication skills and keeps dropping surprise events here and there, a new ranking event is actually incoming, we would have actually had to play Cordyceps' event following chronologically the events of the chinese server but for some reason Elex decided to put Junmai Daiginjo's event first.

Now, I didn't personally play first hand Junmai's event in cn server but last event that came out that had his squad was all about yokais and japanese demon folklore.

So my guess is that they switched the events because Junmai's story was halloween-ish.

And while Junmai's appearence isn't exactly halloween-ish and doesn't make you think about him being an "halloween themed food soul"

His skin, in fact, could fit the description!

It's called "Underworld's night demons" and the skin quote says "In the night of the owl's lament, souls depart and return to their dance in the underworld; in the still hours of the night, living one, take care not to step outside~"

So yeah, my hypotesis is that they were reffering to Junmai with their "halloween themed food soul" and that as usual Elex isn't capable to communicate properly.

This explains more about Kyan’s feelings towards the mc before he catches feelings.

Kyan is a complicated soul. He was a sweet and soft-spoken child who truly loved his parents and his sister (even though they bickered a lot). Unfortunately, a month before his Choosing Ceremony, he witnessed two Major Deities nearly beat a Minor God to death and after the Major Deities had left, he went and spoke to the dying God who told him that in the eyes of the great, we Minor Deities only have one purpose, and that is to be crushed beneath their feet. No one will save us, because we are not worth saving. This resonated with Kyan, who was, to the surprise of everyone, chosen to serve as the new Major Deity of War.

He believes that it’s the job of the strong to protect the weak, and therefore, Celea and it’s elitist attitude need to change. It tore Kyan away from his family and twisted his core into something dark and ugly.

As for the type of routes, they’ve all got elements of forbidden romance to them, but for their more unique ones…

Aeryn’s is mutual pining and friends -> lovers.

Kyan’s is best friends brother and reluctant acquaintances -> enemies -> friends -> lovers.

Niran’s is bodyguard romance and second love.

Elex’s is player falls in love (long-term) and everyone can see it.

Hayle’s is love-interest traitor (depending on mc’s feelings towards Hayle leaving) and not actually unrequited.

And later in the night, everyone gathers around, Xisuma puts on a little admin magic show and they probably have a little bond fire, everyone switching outfits with others to see what they’d look like, often causing shenanigans.

Myth?; He always wanted to make others happy, knowing the ones around him had hard lives. He had struggles of his own but he could tell others were less in control of their demons, so using voice changers, costumes, masks, anything, he tried to help the ones he so desperately wanted to laugh or smile. If he didn’t succeed, he tried again even harder. The day he got his dad to laugh and calm down while being in a fit of rage, was one of his happiest moments. Now after someone is able to make someone genuinely happy, laugh, or cheer up using a funny face, prop, or disguise, a little voice says.

What one would hear after? ‘Well isn’t that just splendid, it feels so nice to see them smile, doesn’t it?’

Myth?; She wasn’t always so guarded and slightly ruthless. She once has faith in the world and who lived in it. But after her death and multiple witnesses’ not saying anything, she would soon grow cold. After waking up in a bed, she was met with the watcher symbol, to be told she was now a god, but instead of going out for revenge, she used her newfound power to manipulate and puppet the ones who had hurt her into ruining their own lives, sabotage themselves, and when they were at their lowest, she left them to deal with it themselves. After she let out her rage she went on to use her magic for good, using her power to lead people in the right directions in their life, help newly reanimated corpses(the sentient ones) to understand life and how to work with their new bodies. Now, whenever someone helps a sentient undead being or uses their bigger power to genuinely help others below them, they’ll hear a soft voice.

Myth?; He had a good life, and made an amazing friend, who he didn’t care was immortal and stronger than he was. And for years he lived his mortal lives surrounded by immortals, seeming to be blending in somehow. Probably due to his vast vocabulary and knowledge he had on hand at all times, and his desire to learn new things. But after an unfortunate death and soon revival, he learned to appreciate life so much more than he had. Now when someone is revived, comes close to death, or uses their knowledge to help keep them or someone else alive, they’ll hear a soft voice.

Tho he died killing this legendary beast, his sacrifice was not in vain. Due to his sacrifice and such kind heart, he was brought back with unspeakable power. Though his life got so much more difficult after that moment, he never regretted a moment of it. Now when someone uses a legend or myth to solve a problem or save someone, they’ll hear a soft voice.

One day, when the kingdom was attacked, Ze disobeyed orders and went to check on the princess to see her being attacked. Ze lost their life that day, but it was a worthy sacrifice, and the kingdom did not forget their sacrifice either. They had a statue dedicated after them and everything. When they were revived as a god, instead of going home, Zey decided to explore the world, see what else was out there and aims to protect others. Hey, Justine!  Thanks for asking!  Though, you picked some interesting ones for Elex, aha.  These are hard, for...reasons.  You’ll see!  I had fun, though.

2. Why did they join the police? Elex joined the police because they wanted a job that could help people, but they also have a complicated relationship with social interaction.  They figured that working at the police station as a tech would be good for that (and indulge their love of intellectualism), but they ended up being hired on as a patrolperson instead, and they were too anxious about disappointing people to argue the point. 

6. What’s their relationship to Bobby? Bobby is an ex-friend.  Well, that’s the official definition, but it was more like Bobby was “nice” to them conditionally in return for typical bully favors back in college.  And Elex just kind of quietly removed themself from Bobby’s circle of notice, until, of course, becoming a detective involved with Wayhaven’s first murder case in years.  Elex...tolerates Bobby, but really wishes that he would go away.

17. What are their hobbies? Elex enjoys reading, stargazing, raising small plants, and making tea.  The last one is just straight up me projecting onto them because that’s one of my favorite activities.  But yeah, Elex had a pretty lonely childhood, and they really enjoy escaping into books, both fiction and nonfiction.  Anything that engages their mind in a meaningful way.  The plants are because they just think succulents and other small house plants are cute.  And the tea?  Because they like it.  And they enjoy hanging out with Haley to try new kinds when they’re available.

20. What is their personality? Honestly, Elex’s personality is...nascent.  Not in the sense that they are childish or immature, but in the sense that their abandonment issues from childhood led them to be an extreme people pleaser.  They’re quiet but polite, calm but hyperempathetic, and actually very dishonest.  Their personality appears to shift depending on who they’re with at the time because they have developed a compulsive need to be who other people want them to be instead of whoever they are.  (From a meta standpoint, this is because Elex was initially controlled by multiple people when I first tried out the game with my friends, so their personality was wildly inconsistent; but I did give them a significant emotional hang-up over their childhood that easily manifested into this sort of coping mechanism as an adult.)

In reality, I think that Elex is truly an empathetic person, but I think that they’re much more emotional about the world than they’ve ever allowed themselves to be.  I think they’re thoughtful, often too much so, and probably would be deadly with sarcasm once they really let themself try it.  I think they are nurturing and maybe buy a little too much into the idea that the world at large needs to be protected from the supernatural world with secrets, but they are also very willing to see the good in everyone and supernaturals are no exception.  I think they would really enjoy board games with Unit Bravo, especially strategy ones.  Elex secretly really wants to be accepted for who they are and to not have to be afraid that the people they have come to care for will leave them if they find out who that person is--but Elex themself is really unsure right now.

She had been fascinated with the man in the painting for as long as she could remember. Flaxen hair brushing softly against cerulean for eyes, framed into a face so beautiful, it could only be described as an angel’s benevolence in human form. The white of his frilled shirt a lovely contrast against skin so gossamer, it would have put the mightiest of fair-folk to shame.

She sighed, reaching her duster to brush against the gold plated mount of the image.

“You’re still here?” An impatient voice called to her from the doorway. “Hurry it up girl; you’ve got two more floors to cover and the groceries before the day is up.”

Hurriedly jumping down from the small ladder she had been using to clean above the fireplace, she moved to fold herself into a respectful bow. “I’m sorry, Head Butler Savin. I shall head out to the market right away.”

The head butler grunted, a non-committal sound before turning away. “Sweep the pantry and the dining hall while you’re at it. And you do remember, don’t you? You are not to go above the fourth floor, under any circumstances.”

It was a warning she had been hearing religiously for the entirety of her one week service as a maid in the Zhou household.

The owner, or rather, this whole place was… disconcerting to put it mildly. She had heard of a job opening down in town for the Zhou manor, situated well away from the other neighboring villages, rustic and worn-down over the long years it had seen and survived.

Located just at the mouth of the “forbidden” woods, no villager ever dared venture into, the Zhou place did not make for a welcoming sight either, barred by wicked looking chains and metallic rails on all sides, with the entrance to the mansion being only through the creaking black iron doors, situated up front.

The towns beyond were no spring walks, owing to the terrible clammy, frigid weather they had all year round but Zhou manor trumped the region in spookiness, without contest.

And so, what had she done when she had seen an advert, forgotten and half torn, pasted to the rickety walls of one of those dingy diners her father frequented? She had jumped at the opportunity.

It offered good pay in addition to lodgings, for whoever dared to take up the position of housemaid. Who was she to deny, when all that really bothered her were the unsettling rumors about the place?

That the place was over-run by phantoms who feasted on the flesh of humans? Or that every maid they’d ever had, had disappeared under most mysterious circumstances?

No, none of that mattered when she was practically a penniless woman, forced to live each day hand-to-mouth, scrounging for every single strip of cash she could make to support her disabled father, her only living family.

She thought of paying her father a visit, offer him the month’s wages while she was at it, just as she got the wicker basket out, ready to head out shopping. The larder was alarmingly low on sugar the last time she had checked.

Mentally going through the list of purchases to be made, she headed out of the kitchen, failing to notice the watchful gaze that held her in its sway, a flash of lapis lazuli in the dark, before it vanished, as if it had never even existed, melting into the quiet of the long, lonely hallways.

“Savin.” The man murmured the name thoughtfully, watching the girl through partially obscured windows, as she walked through the yard below, blue flashing gold flashing red within his eyes, changing colors preternaturally fast, a fact Savin chose to dutifully ignore.

“Yes, Master Kiro?” The servant gracefully moved to serve the freshly brewed ‘tea’, Kiro taking the proffered cup just as smoothly before bringing the odd colored drink up to his mouth.

“I like her. A pretty little Miss Chips, isn’t she?” A short, muted laugh. “Asking you for fried potatoes for her first meal.”

“Indeed,” Savin remarked solemnly, turning to cast a disinterested glance her way.

“I like her, very much.” Kiro commented again, moving to drain the last bit of droplets from his cup, the questionable liquid within catching the dreary light outside, flashing a macabre red as it did.

Nightmares. Or perhaps they were premonitions.

A song, a calling, a lullaby; each time it took a different image, veneer changing with every shifting dream.

A flash of gold. Longer hair, flowing robes from times long past, eyes flashing red. Lips pulled taught over a grin, seemingly harmless enough but she sensed the danger that lurked just underneath, brought upon by centuries old patina accumulating over and over till it warped and changed forms.

She awoke with a start, frosty gasp leaving her on a white puff of breath as she stared up at the stone ceiling overhead. It was cold tonight. Colder.

She glanced towards the door, leading out on hallways that turned dark and foreboding once night fell on the manor.

But the wisps of the dream persisted within her mind’s eye, like an incessant ticking at the back of her mind that refused to slacken the claws it had sunk into her consciousness.

And like a foolish rabbit to its predator, she was drawn, unquestioning. Tonight was the night, something seemed to whisper directly into her mind, coiling into her head-space through ears way too eager to listen to any and all sirens that sung her way.

Changing out of her nightgown into her housemaid garments, lest she come across Savin who would most definitely stand in way of her quest for answers. She snuck out of her room, heading for the staircase, excuses at the ready for her presence in the forbidden wing of the manor.

The old stairs creaked ominously underneath her steps, as if in protest over being disturbed from their centuries’ old slumber.

She shuddered at the thought, steeling her resolve as she tried to make her way further up, as quietly as she could.

A musty, dank smell so strong it almost sent her back, hit her nose as soon as she reached the mouth of the long, dark corridor of the top most floor, running further into places unknown, dangerous.

It was then that her steps faltered for the first time that night.

Was a potentially silly vision worth defying the Head Butler’s orders? What if she got kicked out for her disobedience? And she hadn’t even met this Master of the House yet, having seen (and admired) him, only in portraits so far. She would be unable to plead her case if something went wrong tonight.

Faint music was what pulled her out of wandering thoughts.

The sound of an organ being played, low in intensity and yet she felt each and every single vibration as it passed over her in waves, settling deep into the very marrow of her bones. Calling.

She ventured deeper into the darkness.

You are here, it seemed to sing.

Come to me, it seemed to play.

And like a marionette whose strings led her further into the abyss, she fell as directed, heading further through the winding corridor.

A door. A fancy one. Dusted and polished. So out of odds with the rest of the place that she wondered whether to enter, before it swung open, all on its own, as if she had somehow willed it.

Her mouth fell open on a silent, bewildered gasp.

A room of lavish proportions and furnishings, so huge, she couldn’t glimpse the top of it even when she squinted. Windows heavily barred and boarded, stiff velvet drapes pulled over for good measure as if trying to keep the light out. For good.

Red and purple. Black mixed in Blood, it seemed.

Built like an old fashioned throne room of sorts, like she had read about so often in picture books as a child.

It even housed a throne, a chair less fancy really, but it was placed against the wall farthest from where she stood, a dais leading up to it and –

She halted. Was that a coffin at the base of it?

She caught a glimpse of the organ she had supposedly heard being played, out of the corner of her eye before she wandered further in, closer to what lay within the unburied coffin, kept isolated from the rest of the house.

She stopped at the opening of it - the lid removed and placed aside - and just… stared.

A beautiful boy, a man really, inside. Perhaps no older than she was. But she recognized him. Those set features as picturesque as the man in the painting, but lovelier. A cheap comparison to the actual breathing subject. Hair a golden burst of color, eyes that most definitely would have showed her the endless blue she sought, had they been open, skin soft and supple as if he had just entered his pubescent years but he had most definitely not, for an eerie, ancient air seemed to cling to him.

He was undoubtedly a man, lying as he was within, arms crossed as if… as if in death, body resting upon scarlet velvet so bright, it hurt her eyes and yet, she found that she could not turn away.

Touch me, the air seemed to sigh around her. And she did, reaching a hand into the casket and tracing the Angel’s features. He was cold to the touch, bitter cold.

Like a corpse.

Just as she thought to withdraw her hand, eyes that had been so peacefully shut in slumber, fluttered open, and her heart faltered at the sight, jumping up into her throat.

He was alive. In a burial box.

She moved away… and stumbled over her feet, falling to the ground on her bottom, just at the edge of the dais, fingers digging into the surface beneath, holding her breath as the devastatingly beautiful creature rose from its place of rest, turning crimson eyes her way.

Crimson?

That did not sit right with her already frazzled nerves.

Before it spoke. “Haha, do not be so afraid, little Miss.”

And with the melodious words that washed over her, they seemed to take her nervousness, steal her fear and discard it. Suddenly, she was so calm she wondered why she had been terrified in the first place, of a human. Risen from the dead.

“Another one.” She heard him murmur, sudden sorrow taking his features.

“Another one lured in by the songs, my one curse, my only curse…”

She did not understand his seemingly senseless murmurings but she heard her voice call out, as if of its own accord, to clear him of misconceptions, any misconceptions he might have had. “That is not true, Master Zhou. I had been captivated by you, long before I ever heard of your calling, or saw you… as I do now. I find myself… drawn to you…”

She registered the expression on his face. Wide eyes. Disbelief. Surprise. All emotions that made her regret her outcry.

“I did not mean to overstep my….” She began, before she noticed the slender finger against her lips, just shy of touch, shushing her from further vindications of her actions.

“You’re sweet.” A smile pulled across his lips then, the smile of an angel, just as she had pictured in all of her day-dreams, fresh and brilliant as the sun.

“Since you’re such a sweetheart and seeing as you did just disturb my sleep…” The smile changed tone into something devilish, dangerous, beckoning, still magnetic, as it held her in its sway.

“…You’ll play with me, won’t you, Miss Chips?”

“Pardon, my Lord?” She whispered, the meaning of his words not as innocent in her ears as they had sounded in his beguiling tones.

Another smile, turned cheeky. “Is it alright if I kiss you?”

A nod was what she offered him in response, folly as it was but she could not resist the angel devil that had finally, finally fallen into her lap. A taste, just a taste would do –

That roguish grin stretched wider before it descended upon her lips, cold, warm, hot, it did not make much sense to her, as Lord Zhou – Kiro – pushed her to the floor beneath them, mouth ravenous as it kissed her, licked her lips, her chin, her cheeks before coming back to suck at her open mouth, tongue sliding in when she invited it further.

He tasted just as divine, of nectar so sweet, she was drunk on the taste of him as his mouth explored her however it wished, lips changing angles whenever he pleased, maneuvering her firmly in between hands that refused to relent their grip on her head and she moaned deliriously into him, the sound not escaping further than his mouth.

Anime NYC was really fun!! Elex’s booth was not hard to find, although the Food Fantasy side was facing me when I came in, and Love Nikki was on the other side. Please forgive my abysmal photo taking skills lol I tried to at least get the booth, and I got a decent one of Giant Momo up there. I meant to take pictures of the prizes and things they have, but forgot in all the chaos.

There are a few free things you can pick up at the booth. There are little like magnet token things? and there are “3D” little standing paper doll type things of suits from the game that you can get two of for free. You can get four of them for free if you’ve signed up previously that you will be there on the google form they posted a while back on the official Facebook page! The little 3D figures are mostly suits that we have on our server, but two that we do not have yet. One from the Blood Moon hell event, and the other from 4 Gods.

They have a few Momo plushies, and a couple dresses, and possibly other things I missed because I’m oblivious, but these you have to win by playing their claw machine. Apparently only winning the red ball in the game will let you win Momo or the dresses. You get an extra chance to play the claw machine if you show someone at the booth your screenshot from voting for LN in the google poll thing, I believe. 

Ok, so now to my interactions with them lol. Everyone was really nice and great! The Facebook side of things does not seem to have coordinated very well with the Actually Doing Stuff IRL side of things though. I believe Facebook said that if you signed up to show up at their booth they would have a free Momo plushie among the other gifts, but this did not make its way to reality lol. I’m kind of assuming they had too many people interested to do the free Momo plushie thing? I don’t know, pure speculation. Also I could be remembering wrong haha...

Anyway, due to my social anxiety, and just anxiety in general, I did not end up asking or saying any of the things I meant to say. One of them also directly asked me at one point if I had any feedback or constructive criticism for the game or anything like that, and my mind just decided to completely forget everything it ever knew, so that was cool. I WISH I had at least asked them to pleassssee stop changing everyone name every five minutes!! and asked when Dreamweaver is coming.

However, these are just volunteers, so they do not have like a ton of information about future stuff. Or if they do, I’m sure they’re probably not supposed to give it out freely. I assume, had I asked about Dreamweaver, or anything coming in the future, someone would have told me that they’re working on it, which I believe is what they said when someone asked them about it at the California con. Most of the people I talked to also did not even recognize the 3D figure suits that aren’t on our server yet, which led me to believe they don’t have much knowledge of other servers/what is to come for us at all. (Which is fine, that’s not their job lol just so we’re clear)

Aeryn can’t live without her title and position, which might seem shallow, but to her it means safety and security for herself and her Deities.

Kyan can’t live without his Cursed Blade. It’s a different kind of security blanket to his sister’s titles, but it’s ultimately the same thing. He sees as the way to protect himself and Niran, Elex, and Hayle.

Niran can’t live with Kyan. He’s their best friend and the man who saved them. In Niran’s eyes, their life belongs to Kyan.

Elex can’t live without nir books. Niran nearly burst a blood vessel when Elex insisted on taking all nir books to Yanha, but ne refused to leave them behind.

Hayle couldn’t live without xyr ability to put on any façade. Xe probably would have been dead a long time ago without xyr ability to adapt to any situation on the fly.

30 day facts! 17/30 [Side : Elex]

Elex and Lysander both love the atmosphere around rain and thunderstorms. Their favorite thing to do then is lying in bed, holding each other while listening to the sound of nature outside. Their weekends were often full of activities e. g. hanging out with their old friends (Priya, Iris, Castiel.. ) to let Elex stay connected with them, visiting the farm with Lysander to help his parents, band practise or one of them had to work in their parttime job. Both decided on their own to go this way together and they're happy how each of them includes the other in his daily life. But sometimes in moments like this they just stay in bed the whole day, sleep, kiss, get up to eat / drink something, return, holding each other as tight as possible. Words were not needed, they talked in their own language. Lysander whispered some lyrics in her ear from a new song he had onhis mind while Elex used her fingers to write something on his body.

One could say their relationship was exhausting, but they refused to let go of each other.

"If you find your soul mate, you wouldn't just go the easy way to find your personal happiness. When he suffers, I'll be there for him and I know he would do the same for me. Do you have any tips for working toward writing longer stories?

Hey there, anon! I’m so sorry this is delayed. Life’s been a bit crazy and I’ve been doing a lot of writing when I’m not working. I promised myself I’d get to some asks this evening, though, because you guys are awesome.

If you’re looking for stories that lend to longer plots, you may consider working with multiple characters. I’ve found that my longer stories tend to be a full cast for whatever series I’m writing on at the time. One shots can have one or two, maybe three in them, but rarely do I write a multi-chapter story from just one point of view. If you’re not used to expanding out past one or two characters, it’s super daunting at first, I’ll be honest. I still freak out when I start writing for a new character, but just working with them is the best way I’ve found to get more comfortable with them.

Once you find a plot that you think will lend a little longer, I think my biggest tip is something that I picked up from @toseehowthestoryends: plot points.

 This is funny, because I hate outlines. I remember writing classes at university and professors that would try to get me to outline and how irritated I’d get. I just wanted to let it flow. That works great for short stories, but the problem with 20, 30, 40K+ stories (especially if you’re not writing it all in one long binge writing weekend or something) is that you forget things. You forget the amazing idea you had, but wouldn’t fit until later on in the story, and you forget that Elex and Georges had the damn dogs with them and that if the room explodes, you’ve gotta save the dogs, not just the guys (

That being said, I still hate the idea of an outline. It’s just too structured for my writing style (some people love them, and if a super structured outline works for you, go for it!), so I started talking to @toseehowthestoryends because her Once stories are epic and twisty and layered and I didn’t know how she kept all the facts in them straighter than the show runners for the show could ever dream to. She introduced me to plot points where you just sort of jot down the highlights of what you need to happen and what order it needs to happen in. It keeps you focused, helps you to know where things are going, and you can always make them as detailed or vague as you need to work through those ideas. For me, once I started doing that, I found that I abandoned much fewer stories. I knew where I was going so I didn’t reach the end of a chapter, stare at it like it had betrayed me by keeping its secrets, and then bail on it for something new and shiny with ideas. They also help when I do take a break from a story (I swear I’m going back to Howl Until it Hurts, I swear! as soon as Such Great Heights is done!) so that I can go back to my plot points and look over them so that I don’t miss any major happenings in the story and either repeat or ignore things that have already been dealt with.

Another personal favourite of mine, and this may just be me being a nut, is keeping a running timeline. I don’t do that for every story I write, but for stories like Howl Until it Hurts where they span over years, it’s super helpful to keep the pacing right. 

Evernotes has been my saving grace these last few years. I keep files and files just for fan fiction. Some have more detailed notes than others. Stories over multiple years, like I said, and plot divergent AU’s tend to have a lot of varied notes. As I was plotting for Such Great Heights I knew I needed to go in and figure out not only what responsibilities everyone had in this new world, but also why the dream world had given them those specific jobs, those specific connections. Why those things kept them happy and kept them from asking questions. It helps to keep everything straight for me.

So, short answer long: notes. Planning. However much or little fits your style, and it may change with each story. I hope that helps. Thank you so much for this question :D

Games I’m excited about for 2018

Spider-man (PS4 exclusive): This list is in no way ranked. That being said this is my most anticipated game of 2018. I have been waiting for a Spider-man game to grab me since Spider-man 2. When I was at E3 the gameplay looked really promising and showed that the developers knew what made the good games good. From what I can see they even were able to pull some of the things that made the bad games good a la “Web of Shadows”. I’m not going to say much else for fear of this whole post turning into a Spider-man rant. Don’t let me down Insomniac. Do not.

Dragon Ball FighterZ: This game looks SHIT HOT and I’m excited to have a fighter I really want to get into from this generation. Smooth seamless combat at breakneck speeds and so much source material it was probably daunting. DBZ is special to me and many people like me, the guys at Arc Systems have their work cut out for them and I’m excited. My fighting games thus far have been Soul Calibur 3, MvC 2, and the little I dabbled in Injustice 2 ....yeah as you can see fighting games aren’t my thing. This, however, this is gonna be something I commit to. Come January 28th these hands will be on sale, come and get it

Days Gone (PS4 exclusive): 28 Days Later-esque pandemic centered in a rich yet frightening wilderness with survival mechanics? Single Player based?Yes please and thank you I will be having all of it. The gameplay looks great and just as importantly, the story seems engaging. Yes, it’s the same Last of Us scenario we’ve encountered time and time again in both games and movies. This time I think that may have been taken into account. There’s a somber yet rooted tone that though again has been done before, really seems to hold up even in the brief cutscenes available online. Am I worried that the developers have really only accomplished the Syphon Filter series (dating myself here which is a scary thought), two PS Vita Uncharted games, one unremarkable Resistance game, and Bubsy 3D in ‘96.... NOPE fuck it cause it’s almost promised to be free of micro-transactions and actually be an enjoyable and enthralling experience.

Monster Hunter World: The beta was fun, combat felt a little empty at times but once it gets going there is no stopping this game. Something about hunting a Slug Fish creature in a swamp, turning a corner only to see some unholy being vaguely reminiscent of a T Rex fused with an Armadillo. At that point I realized that we may be the monster hunters but holy shitfuck we better come correct. Really really really deep equipment and tools settings. Your main weapon is just the beginning with perks, buffs both passive and active, as well as a few other key tools also being at your disposal. I got a buddy to join me and the two of us dragged each other through that ordeal but it was hard because it was new, I was still having a good time. I’m excited to see what Capcom brings to their first console rendition in 11 years for a franchise that is as highly acclaimed as this one. 

Far Cry 5: This is a series that has always done an amazing job at the whole “Hunter v Hunted” aesthetic. I always feel so powerful and dangerous when I play Far Cry and 3 was a huge step in the right direction. 4 had a lot of things that I enjoyed, the gunplay, vehicles, and characters were really good. It did, however, fall a little short story-wise as well as some worn game mechanics with this being the fourth in the series. I did not get to play FC5 at E3 because that line was absurd. That being said, from the gameplay available on Youtube and various interviews it does seem that Ubisoft is aware of the potential stale twinge Far Cry has developed over the years. I’m looking forward to cutting down zealot cultists in the open Montana landscapes. March 27.

Anthem: This game is important, after the fuck-shit-stack that was Battlefront 2 and the cacophony of backlash that came with it; EA have to get this right. This loot box based online shooter, the “Destiny-killer” it’s being called. How does one kill what is already dead? Fuck if I know but I am interested IF they can do it right. That being said, my hopes aren’t high, but this game will be a barometer. This will show whether EA is willing to bend at all on their plans for monetization. They know a BF2 scenario is totally on the table now, and if they misstep, there will be more backlash. Either way, we win, either we get a good game or EA get put on another stake to burn.

Vampyr: From the developer that brought us Life is Strange and Remember Me comes a new game set in London 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic. We will play a vampire (sigh prime journalism over here folks) in town with a set number of NPCs and each death will have consequences for both you and the city. Semi-open world with an RPG and combat focus, I’m so down and I really hope this game can do new things. Q2 (Jan., Feb., Mar.) 2018

Soul Calibur 6: My fighting game is back and this is going to be a weird year for me with not one but two fighting games that will find my focus this year. Mitsurugi, Sophitia, and around 20+ are back to beat the everloving snot out of each other. I’m excited because this is supposedly a “reboot” of the franchise which means a lot of the original characters will be back (Nightmare, Maxi, Ivy, Taki, Kilik, etc). Things like armor breaking are both interesting and worrisome. I suspect Taki, Ivy, and the other unreasonably busty women of the series will be left awfully vulnerable sans armor by the mid/end of a battle. Regardless, this revamp maybe what the fighting franchise needs to enter the ring against the big boys of this generation. 

Death Stranding: DEATH MOTHER FUCKING STRANDVXIRJORWTMDNGHF  Let me tell you something, Kojima is going to save us all. I’m serious he is going to take all our hands and walk us into the sunlight of gaming where there are no microtransactions, the singleplayer is an epic odyssey, the multiplayer is fun but unnecessary, and the gaming experience is not only unique but has a lasting impression on every gamer brave enough to hold a controller. This game is going to test us, change us, and maybe most importantly: make people rethink the way games are made/designed. The third person sci-fi nightmare adventure will be here before we know it and great Scott am I ready to dive in. 

Red Dead Redemption 2: Had you asked me about RDD2 and it’s hypothetical production about 3 years ago; I would’ve said something along the lines of  “Fuck yes yippie kai yay mfs where mah horse at”. After Take-Two (parent company of 2k and Rockstar) came out and essentially supported EA’s usage of loot boxes. The CEO stated that “Recurrent consumer spending was the way of the future,” which is concerning to say the very least. I’m worried my West World sim is gonna turn into well...something more like West World. “Oh what’s that want a new hat? 5 bucks. New horse? 10 doll hairs plz. New gun? 15 smackers and the skin off your respective genitalia. Thank you come again.” My once resounding and honestly strange response is definitely more tepid and cautious. GTAV is lending itself quite nicely to the ways of the microtransaction and I can just see little buckets of gold nuggets or some dumb shit like that hinging in front of me or at the local shop. If so may there be backlash, and lots of it. 

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Greedfall: Developed by Spiders, a team with an... interesting track record in gaming (Sherlock Holmes v Jack the Ripper, Bound by Flame, and Technomancer [yikes]). On paper, this game sounds like it might be worth a damn and this is the most publicity any of their games have gotten so that does peak my interest. That and the publisher is Focus Home Interactive, makers of games like Divinity 2 and The Surge as well as my highly anticipated Call of Cthulhu and Vampyr. Who knows, this team up might just work. An open world RPG with online mechanics sounds fun.

God of War: I have never played a God of War game all the way through. With this being my first PlayStation that does make sense. That being said, I’m very excited to sit down and try my hand at this rebooted series. Given the reputation and clear influence a game like GoW has had, it does lead my expectations up rather than down. Santa Monica is developing, Ready at Dawn for some reason isn’t but it’s good to see the original team getting another crack at the Spartan. This time Greco-Roman gods are put aside for a more Nordic feel. The chain blades replaced with a hefty ax as well as a few other tools from what I’ve read/heard. Another interesting single player experience for those turned off by multiplayer and microtransactions. Not to say it won't have them just look at Shadow of War. It does, however, make it considerably less likely.

BioMutant: Traverse an open and changing world as an also everchanging bio-genetic mutant. Supposedly going to have big rpg mechanics involving the fact that your character’s schtick is evolving and changing. Brought to you by THQ Nordic the people that brought us the highs of the Darksiders series, Painkiller: Hell and Damnation, and Red Faction (2001). As well as some lows like the recently imploded Elex, Alan Wake, and the classic Spynx and the Cursed Mummy. I really don’t know what to make of this resume let alone what to expect. I am however excited for something new in the third person adventure genre.
