Speaking of Art, some OC concept refs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alathasis, Emlyn, Flow, and Sileona & Centurion
Meant to be quick things for an event in a server. Just quick concept sketches for references
Al, Em, and Flow are all Bloodborne OCs
Sil and Cent are Dark Souls 2 OCs. Centurion a variant take on the Sanctuary Guardians for Eleum Loyce
They're all a bit rushed as I was doing them in last few days of October and needed to get them done by November 1st, but I'm still happy with these enough to post

Lucatiel Ramble, number one out of... a lot.
Every time I play ds2 I make sure to do Lucatiel’s entire quest even if it makes me sob uncontrollably when she..... y’know..... spoilers for a game that came out in 2011
Begs you not to forget her name and says that she may not even remember herself, and then gives you her equipment, basically the only possessions an undead would ever have and the only means of guaranteeing your survival in Drangleic, bc she trusts you that much, even when she remembers nothing. I love her sm and she deserves so much better than that run-down shack in Aldia. Also, the item desc on her mask in DSIII hits me like a goddamn truck. Lucatiel canonically was a part of the Bearer of the Curse’s journey and they made sure she was remembered until the very end of the world itself. She is literally my favorite soulsborne npc and I wish we got more of her. I would always be so happy to find out I can summon her somewhere which meant that I could talk to her a little bit. And the fact that she tells you she’d kill you if it meant getting the cure, but then later entrusts the legacy of herself and her brother to you alone. It’s so sad, because I don’t even know if she remembered her brother by that point. She said that her oldest memories were fading first, but I feel like it was more along the lines of the memories that had the least meaning. Why? Because while she remembers her  past in mirrah and her brother, she doesn’t remember why she came to drangleic, which is much more recent than any of those other things. So, if my theory is true, and she only remembers the most important things, then her remembering your character while on the brink of hollowing means that you were of great importance to her, likely due to the lack of friendly faces in ds2, making your character stand out to her, especially since she recognizes you no matter what you’re wearing or if you’ve completely changed everything about your character (stats, using the funny trans coffin, etc.).

i do love FromSoft architecture and how the cities (almost) meld into a semi-coherent stage or whatnot
but I do have to say, all this architecture is bougie as hell, where are the backstreets of this town??? where are the middle class neighborhoods

The New Londo Ruins.
Where we can imagine the fall of Oolacile as a terrible disaster, a magical corrosion and a rotting-away of the land itself, people were responsible for the destruction of New Londo. We meet one Sealer still in place, whose powers over cursing are unrivaled, if you're willing to pay his price.
We know by its name that it was related to Anor Londo. We know it was a city largely filled by the undead.
We know a fire keeper lived there, before nobody lived there at all.
Draining the water and realizing exactly what (and who) waits below is one of the defining moments of Dark Souls 1, for me.
The little details make it even better. The few souls dropped by any New Londo enemy; the total lack of a bonfire, snuffed by volumes of water or buried under a mountain of the drowned.
The ghosts and their fury, more cursed even than you are. The echoing screams and the tranquil blue light.
The Darkwaiths make it all the better, as does the realization that unlike every other enemy, they aren't after your souls.
It's one of my favorite areas.
What’s a Fromsoft level that, from a story and symbolism perspective, completely devastates you and eats away at your soul? For me, it’s Drangleic Castle from DS2. The existence of this place fills me with unfathomable sorrow and I will care to elaborate with text below this pretty image:
Tumblr media
The fact that it sits atop an isolated hill, the emptiness of the rooms, the petrified soldiers, the ghosts and the rain all highlight the sense of dehumanization, isolation, loneliness, loss of self and overall confusion present all throughout this game (especially in, but not only, Nashandra and Vendrick’s relationship). This is a place where more than one person lived, descending towards insanity, for decades and decades rotting in either borderline psychological abuse or the awareness that the world is falling under a curse they do not fully understand, and that everyone is desperately trying to find a cure for, but with no avail.

I love when place names in Soulsborne have adjectives.
It's Lost Izalith and Frozen Eleum Loyce and Crumbling Farum Azula.
Inviting you to imagine these broken, devastated landscapes in a state that is not lost or frozen or crumbling — a state that is implied to once have been, that will never be again and that is left entirely to the player to imagine and that's so good.

Granted i started with DS2, never played DS1 or Demon's, but Heide's Tower of Flame was the first time i actively set the controller down in a video game and just looked around and took in the entire aesthetic of an area. Really just drank it all in, and all the subtle environmental storytelling throughout.
It's one of the first times i looked at an area in a video game and didn't think "ok this is a clearly fictional place, actively created by a developer, and filled with enemies for me to defeat as i move through it" and instead started wondering, honestly and earnestly, what was this place? Not what it Is, but what it Was?
What was it for, who built it, what happened here? What horrible tragedy befell this place to leave it in the sorry state i currently see, where i could see the echoes of its former glory and beauty corroded by both violence and time? Who was Heide? And why are their knights these half-lurching pains in the ass?
And that was about when i got my face caved in by a 12 foot-tall douchebag holding a greatsword that's roughly the size and weight of a Honda Civic, because i didn't yet know that Slash weapons are bad against armored foes, BECAUSE THAT WAS NEVER SOMETHING I HAD HAD TO CONSIDER BEFORE.
Heide's Tower was truly an awakening for me, and it'll always be superior to "Fantasy Winnipeg".
DS2 Finals!! What's your favourite area?
Let's take a look at the finalists!
