Day 1: Introduce your Hero of Ferelden

Elena Cousland Theirin

Noble who became Queen of Ferelden with Alistair

She loves pink and she will make sure her makeup is perfect as she cracks your skull open with her warhammer 🩷

Her family named their mabari Howeler as a fun little joke at Arl Howe's expense, but I imagine it drives him crazy

I think in the beginning she sees her becoming a Grey Warden as just some step she has to take in order to murder Howe, because she is all about revenge for awhile.

As a young adult, she was very flirty and usually used people to raise her status, using her pretty eyes and innocent smile to get what she wanted. A little bit before the events of origins, she and her friend get in a massive argument because of how much she uses people to get what she wants and she starts thinking "oh shit am I a bad person?"

In the beginning, she was definitely flirting with Leliana and Alistair for funsies, but she starts actually developing feelings for Alistair and she realizes she really likes just traveling and not being a noble who has to play everyone in order to survive, so she starts thinking of leaving her old life behind when this is done and just being with Alistair, because she really does truly love him.

And then she finds out he's the king's son.

This really fucks with her, because on the one hand, she could totally use him to gain a better status. On the other hand, he genuinely doesn't want to be king and she doesn't want to make him do anything he doesn't want to. She loves him and becomes terrified of accidentally manipulating him

She ends up hardening Alistair, because as much as she loves him, he needs to grow a spine. This leads to him saying he actually wants to be king at the Landsmeet, so she decides this

She loves Alistair and refuses to see him with another woman

She does not like Anora because Anora reminds her too much of herself before she joined the Grey Wardens

Alistair genuinely cares about his people and would make a good king, but needs to be wary of people trying to manipulate him into doing what they want

Alistair will be unhappy if he does not have someone he trusts and cares about by his side

She loves Alistair, knows politics, would be happy to provide an heir (she really wants kids), and knows the struggle of being a grey warden

During the Landsmeet, she asks Alistair if being king is what he truly wants and he says yes. So she announces that he will be king and she will be his queen

She and Alistair had two kids, Duncan and Faith, warrior and mage respectively because I will make Fiona face the consequences of her actions if it's the last thing I do, and because no one can tell me otherwise, Elena Cousland finally finds the cure for the calling and her, Alistair, and their kids live happily ever after 🩷

More DA:O liveblogging (ish). Adventures in Lothering!

Lena ignored her misgivings and made her way into town. Much to both Alistair and Morrigan's dismay, she insisted upon stopping to help lost children and effectively tried to solve the problems of the entire village by herself.

After the fifth time she gave money to a refugee family, Alistair firmly took her aside and gently insisted that she stop doing that before they ran out of money to feed themselves.

"It's really nice Lena, don't get me wrong. But there's such a thing as too nice, you know?" "They need the money, Alistair. That child was as thin as a rake." "Look, it's very endearing that you want to help everyone but we really can't. Just promise me you'll check with me before you agree to help someone else, deal?" "I suppose so. You're the one with the street smarts in this team." A derisive snort from Morrigan cut that particular conversation short.

After finding out that Arl Eamon was sick with an incurable illness, Lena suggested they drop by the Circle - maybe the mages there might know a cure if traditional healing had failed? Alistair agreed that they could go that way en route to Redcliffe and kill two birds with one stone.

On their way out of the village, Lena's natural curiosity led her to drag the others into the tavern after she heard raised voices. They entered only to be confronted by men claiming to work for Loghain, swords bared. Lena begged them to stand down, aided by a Chantry sister that was also present, but no matter how she pleaded they were determined to fight - it was only when one swiped at her that Lena relented and fought back.

After the fight, the lay sister introduced herself as Leliana. Lena was very confused by the other redhead - her talk of visions and hearing the Maker's voice was slightly alarming. Once again ignoring the voice of reason from her companions, Lena graciously accepted Leliana's offer of help.

"More crazy? I thought we were full up." "We need all the allies we can get, don't we? Besides, having the Maker on our side is win-win, surely!"

Just as they were about to leave Lothering behind them, Lena spotted a tall man, held in a cage by the village gates. Horrified, and despite Morrigan trying to drag her forcibly away by the arm, Lena ran up to the man and asked him what he had done to deserve being left for the darkspawn, helpless.

She'd never seen a qunari before, so didn't connect the dots at first. Listening to his story, she declared that no matter what he had done, being left to the darkspawn was too cruel a punishment for anyone. Leaving everyone behind with instructions to guard him, Lena darted back to the Chantry and appealed to the Revered Mother for leniency. Her genuine compassion and earnest expression softened the Mother's heart, and she agreed to give Lena the key, as long as she didn't say where she got it.

Almost before the others had recovered from her sudden disappearance, she reappeared with a broad grin on her face and a key in her hand. After making Sten, for that was the qunari's name, agree to aid them against the Blight the group left Lothering behind and began the long trip to the north of Ferelden. Several weeks of travel loomed large in their future, but Lena didn't mind. She could ask Alistair for more stories of the Wardens.

He didn't need to know it was just because she liked listening to him speaking.

This my blorbo. A Cousland theoretically knows shit all about magic - why would they have been exposed to it beyond common knowledge like "they can be overtaken by demons and turn into abominations"?

She would have gone in all ready to kick some mage butt if they were misbehaving but seeing the inside of the tower shakes her into uncertainty.

Broken circle is obviously very emotional for our Amells and Suranas, but you know what other warden I love walking through Kinoch Hold? A Cousland. A Cousland who maybe did believe mages needed to be watched over by templars, who did believe magic was too dangerous, who politically and vocally supported the circles when it came up in discussions because of course mages need circles.

That Cousland seeing what a circle is really like. Seeing the packed in quarters. Seeing the terrified kids that the templars are willingly trying to kill. Seeing the desperation behind the eyes of those blood mages. Seeing how small it all feels. Putting together the amount of apprentice beds and how many there are compared to how few beds there are for those who pass their harrowing. "Wynne, how many people pass their harrowing?"

I just love the idea of a Cousland who didn't think much about it before beyond; yeah, that probably is fine being completely radicalised into a mage rights activist by Broken Circle.

The small inn-room is not well-lit. It doesn’t have a fireplace; the only light in the room is coming from their only lantern (which was a good buy, even if a bit expensive) and about six candles they managed to scrounge up. Elena’s glad for that at least.  

Zevran is sitting in the middle of the bed, his boots and his armour left orderly at the side.  Unsurprisingly, he’s still smiling, even though the pain Elena imagines he’s still feeling.

“When you said you would be loyal to me, I didn’t realise it meant taking a knife in the back by jumping front of me.” She says, sitting on the bed. “You do realise I could have taken the hit. I was wearing heavy armour.”

She leans over to the small bedside table and moves one of the candles a bit closer.

“Well, my dear Warden, how else will I get to sit here and have your hands all over me?”

Elena rolls her eyes, but smiles. She doesn’t smile as often as she used to, but with Zevran it almost feels easier.

“I think you might need stitches. Wynne will be able to take care of it tomorrow, but I don’t want to risk it getting worse overnight.”

“Very well.” He pulls his hair over his shoulders with a wince.

She’s behind him and he’s not looking at her; he’s not tense, he’s relaxed. Elena doesn’t say anything, but she does smile to herself.

Sword - Have they ever broken an oath?

MEREDITH — she never technically voiced such an oath, but she definitely broke the vow that most grey wardens make in swearing that stopping the darkspawn is their sole goal after the joining. meredith never surrendered her titles and actively called on them during the fifth blight, and though she did her duties as warden-commander for years,,,everybody knew that she was far more devoted to politics and ruling.

ELENA — not that i can think of. she's the type to take her word seriously and only commit it to something she truly believes in, any oath would be the utmost responsibility in her eyes.

Knuckles - What is their health like?

MEREDITH — she's in good health, much to the dismay of the haters. she's a warden but she rarely encounters darkspawn, and as a rogue has no access to any magic that would accelerate the progression of the taint. of course it's still there and in time will take its course, but she hopes to cut off that potential before the first inkling appears.

ELENA — she's golden. she's insane. girlie has a +4 constitution score, she's in peak condition and will nearly always be that way given who and what she is.

Whip - Who/What are they tied to? Relationships? Obligations?

MEREDITH — the cousland family and denizens of the highever teyrnir, the kingdom of ferelden as a larger picture, her positions of power, alistair. she has always felt a deep connection to people, especially those who are in her charge such as the folks of the teyrnir when she was a lady, and then the fereldans during the fifth blight and after. she was born into a position of power and privilege, has always known this and felt obliged to use that position justly and responsibly. (and alright, yes, maybe, she enjoys it quite a lot.) has been bound to alistair since the battle of ostagar, still true in alt verses when somebody else is her LI but incredibly so in her default state where they become partners then royals and start changing the kingdom together. i can’t find the words to explain it at this moment but like. some kind of tie to nathaniel as well, strange as it may seem given the circumstances of their reuniting at vigil’s keep. they bond over the course of awakening and then maintain a close friendship long after.

ELENA — has been tied to whitestone and the zenith since birth. she came into this world with a whole ass divine miracle and was expected to continue to do great things as the sunblessed child of pelor, and she took that on as an obligation as she grew. she has a big tie to the citizens of whitestone in general because she loves them, wants to protect and aid them with the abilities that pelor grants her, but she doesn’t have any specific ties outside of one true friend. hasn’t really bonded with anybody else outside of that lmao

just thoughts about my planned dav runs

finally, finally i'm going to realize my full on necromancer idris dreams and i'm not going to stop myself, he's a mortalitasi now. thinking about the worldstate tho, prob ilen as inky who was closest with solas, i want to see how it plays out, and they were from a full on dalish worldstate - i never finished dao as mahariel but just put that in the keep, and also have my blue archer elena hawke romancing merrill.

and then i want to play my crow!idris au, which will be super fun, but i wonder, like morgan is obviously still a mage, but he doesn't exactly use magic to fight, he's a spy and a poisoner. i wonder if i should go with sth like saboteur? i guess i'll see how this spec looks in practice, but he's not a duelist and sure af not an archer, and none of the mage spec fit well. (i mean he is a necromancer, but as a side job...). i think i'm going to grab some of my zevran-romancing wardens for this game so literally all of them, which means prob shartan or gareth. not sure about hawke, shartan is in the worldstate with marian, but that's my canon worldstate with idris as inquisitor.

but then i actually want to play as shartan, as a grew warden warrior - again he's a mage but is not using it for fighting. i'd like to go with champion spec and 2 handed weapon but not sure how well it synergizes. shartan uses a greatsword, that one i can't change, but the one spec actually fit him best was daa's spirit warrior. not sure about worldstate for this one, maybe go full on wardenmancing for this one, with idris hawke romancing anders and then inky jadwiga who romanced blackwall.

and then since i'm already having all my canon worldstate pcs, i'd have my red reaver hawke, marian, and she'd want to romance all the ladies. lord of fortune background i think. also kinda thinking about the ultimate lesbians saving the world worldstate with haelia cousland (romancing leliana) and taarshath adaar (romancing sera).

For reference: Elena Cousland as HoF, Tara Hawke as, well, Hawke, and Marella Lavellan as Inquisitor, I only refer to Elena by the 1st name tho

your Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor's opinion on Orlais? Elena hates their fashion trends, she thinks they're trying too hard, but besides that, she hates them because her family hates them. Hawke doesn't think about Orlais at all. Lavellan, being Inquisitor, has to deal with their politics, so she's iffy on them. They're a lot more prone to compromise than Fereldan nobles, but they're also playing the game constantly, which is always unnerving

are they skilled in The Grand Game? As a noble, Elena's quite good at it. Hawke would be decent, but not good enough to survive long term. I personally think Lavellan is amazing at The Game, like, top notch, but the whole thing stresses her out so much that she would never actively choose to participate unless she has to

opinion on blood magic? At the start, Elena really doesn't trust it, but due to Morrigan being a real one and saving her and/or Alistair's life, she's still cautious of it, but sees it's use. Hawke has seen so many mages do blood magic, it's not anything special to her, it's just another type of magic that mages use. Lavellan sees blood magic as a tool that a lot of people just choose to use in a poor manner.

attitude towards Andrastianism? The Temple of Sacred Ashes really changed Elena, so she does believe in The Maker. Hawke believes in The Maker, but, ya know, he abandoned them, so it's not like he's doing much. She believes in the religion, but not the chantry. Lavellan does not believe in any gods. The idea of gods just never really made sense to her. She understands the importance of religion for people, but given the Exalted March, she is always a tad bit salty towards Andrastianism

attitude towards the Chantry? Elena thinks the chantry is good and useful, Hawke thinks they're annoying and controlling, and Lavellan also thinks they're controlling, but she knows how important the chantry is to the people, so she really just wants it to reform. Probably why she makes Leliana Divine.

attitude towards the Qun? Elena was very good friends with Sten, but since he never explained it that much, she just sees it as this group/religion that she doesn't really agree with, but respects overall. Hawke thought the Arishok was chill until he killed the viscount and did that whole thing, so she generally thinks of them pretty negatively. Lavellan's basically second dad was from Tevinter, one of her best friends is Tevinter, and in order to keep an alliance with the Qun, she would've had to sacrifice the Chargers, so she is not a fan and does not trust them.

if they had to choose one person most important to them, who would that be? Even tho it's a cop out, their love interests are definitely the most important. Alistair for Elena and Cullen for Lavellan. However, as much as Hawke loves Anders, Bethany as her younger sister and last living relative will always be top priority, she would violate the Geneva Conventions for Bethany.

who do they hate the most, and do they have an arch-nemesis? Elena fucking despises Howe, when he died, she just pummeled his corpse into wine. She also doesn't care for Anora. They're very similar, which makes Elena dislike her even more. Hawke hates that mage who killed her mom, but, ya know, that one's obvious. I think she doesn't necessarily hate Cullen, but she's pro mage, very protective of her sister and Anders, and thinks he's annoying. Plus I love subscribing to the idea that Hawke's the one who gave Cullen that scar on his lip. Lavellan has a love hate relationship with Vivienne. She really respects Vivienne as a very talented mage, and Lavellan also thinks Vivienne is what she should be. Showing no emotions, not relying on anyone, and minimizing weakness, but she can't. She also doesn't agree with quite a bit of Vivienne's politics, so there are some disagreements there.

what is their love language? Elena, gifts and acts of service. Hawke, words of affirmation and acts of service, Lavellan, quality time and physical touch

are they good horse riders? Elena and Lavellan yes, Hawke no

what are their religious beliefs, if any? Elena and Hawke are Andrastian, Elena believes in the Chantry, Hawke doesn't. Lavellan does not think gods are real and has heavy religious trauma trying to fit in with her clan because of that.

attitude towards Mabari? All positive. Elena and Hawke are Fereldan, so they obviously love Mabari, and Lavellan's clan was close friends with a merchant who had a Mabari, so she was basically raised around one

their thoughts on the Grey Warden order? Elena is obviously in favor of it, Hawke is glad they saved Bethany's life, but she doesn't really trust them, not helping in Kirkwall and all, and Lavellan generally thinks well of them but doesn't think they're without fault after what happens with Corypheus.

who are they closest to from their family? Fergus, since he's the only one alive for Elena, Bethany, since she's the only one alive for Hawke, and Lavellan's older sister. Lavellan's older sister ran away at a young age and converted to Andrastianism and got married to a nice city elf later on, so their parents disowned her, but Lavellan would secretly visit her sister on occasion. I think awhile after Skyhold is set up, her sister and her husband come to stay in Skyhold and they have a really sweet reunion.

preferred weapon of choice? Elena, big ass Warhammer, my girl's a tank. Hawke, dual daggers, it's just a very fun way to fight for her, and Lavellan, her staff, obviously

do they get sentimental about their weapons or armour? All yes. Elena still has her family weapon to this day. Hawke keeps her dad's armor around and I head canon her always wearing a jacket of his that she originally gave to Carver before he died. Lavellan specifically gets sentimental about old Dalish armor, anything else is eh.

what were they like as a child? Elena, like Anora, learned how to bat her eyes and play the sweet innocent girl to get what she wanted fast. She also always loved watching the guards train as a young girl. Hawke was incredibly energetic and was always doing mischievous activities. She was always an explorer. Lavellan loved figuring out how things worked and would often learn to take things apart and put them back together. She would've made a great artificer if she wasn't a mage.

do they have any irrational fears? I wouldn't say it's a phobia, but Elena doesn't really like thunderstorms while out in the open and not in a building, it makes her uncomfortable. I like to think Alistair finds this out while they're camping one time and he kinda teases her but once he sees how wigged out she is, he just comforts her, which makes her feel better. I don't think Hawke has any irrational fears, but she more than makes up for that with her self loathing and inability to be alone for fear of being with her thoughts! Lavellan straight up has pyro phobia after watching her partner die. The smell of burnt hair makes her gag.

are they afraid of death? Yes, everyone. Elena has that classic fear, Hawke obviously hates all of her family dying, but she is terribly afraid of dying before her loved ones die because that means she can't protect them, so it's a lose lose situation for her and Lavellan does not want to die without truly living, something she hasn't really done until she joined the Inquisition

where would they like to be buried? Elena wants to be buried with her family who died in her prologue, but she would pick being buried by Alistair's side if he died first. Hawke would want to be buried either in her old family home in Lothering if it's still standing or under the floorboards of the Hawke Estate to haunt the place. Lavellan would want to be buried under a tree or sapling in the Exalted Plains or Emerald Graves.

what is their biggest regret? Elena, not being able to save her family, Hawke, not being able to save her family, Lavellan, not being able to save her f- nah I'm just kidding. have they ever been to Tevinter? No~

do they have, or want to have, children? Elena: yes absolutely. She wants kids so bad and even with the Grey Warden Joining lowering the fertility rate, she and Alistair have two kids two years apart. Duncan (warrior), obviously named after Duncan the Grey Warden, and Faith (mage because you cannot escape your decisions FIONA), named after Wynne because Alistair and Elena wanted to memorialize Wynne but they both thought it would be weird to call a child Wynne. Hawke has never really thought about having kids and I think time just flew by to where she couldn't, but it wasn't a huge loss. She and Anders are happy with Barkspawn and cats that they've definitely adopted along the way. Lavellan and Cullen have 4 kids, Aidan (warrior), Elnora (rogue), Ellana (mage), and Bunny (rogue, named after original Cole's sister). Aidan is oldest, Elnora and Ellana are fraternal twins, and Bunny is youngest. Aidan is two years apart from Elnora and Ellana, and Bunny is youngest by a year.

what languages can they speak? Elena and Hawke can only speak common language, but I do think Elena learns a tad bit of Qunlat from Sten. Lavellan knows Elvhen, the common language, and some Tevene. Again, her clan was close with a merchant named Corran who used to be a slave from Tevinter. He had a mabari named Brute who only understood Tevene, so Corran taught Lavellan a bit so she could play with Brute and converse with Corran. I also think as a teen she started only swearing in Tevene so her clan couldn't understand what she was saying as a small form of rebellion, but it transferred into adulthood and it always catches people way off guard when she curses

what did they plan for their life to look like before the events of the game happened? Elena was probably going to flirt around a bit more before finally getting married to some noble who she got along with, maybe Howe's kid, she was thinking about it. Hawke was also probably going to flirt around a bit, probably never settle down, but she was always planning to find some way to make sure her family was financially stable. She didn't have many plans, but she knew that for sure. Lavellan would've just settled and become Keeper, never truly happy but unable to leave her clan.

do they get a happy ending? Elena, I headcanon as yes until the games specifically say not. At the end of DAI, if the HoF romanced Leliana who becomes Divine, they're mentioned as coming back to be by her side, so why wouldn't Elena come back and be by Alistair's side and see her kids after like 4 years? Hawke is a bit more iffy. She definitely takes a while to fully trust Anders again after what he did, but she still loves him, so they get through it. Lavellan is also a yes. She marries the man she loves, gets a dog, and finally gains self confidence and takes control of her life.

Also I don't think my Hawke and Anders would have a kid, but I drew what I think she'd look like just in case. But they would DEFINITELY have a cat

DA:O - Travelling to the Circle edition.

Travelling was a novelty for Lena. She'd never really gone anywhere much except in carriages, staying in inns. Morrigan painstakingly taught her how to make a fire, something that took almost two hours, but the delight on Lena's face when she produced a small spark almost made the wait worth it.

As they were on the long trek to the Circle, the nightmares began. Visions of hordes of darkspawn underground, led by a dread beast that could only be the Archdemon, plagued Lena's dreams. One particularly bad night she couldn't hold back a scream as she jolted awake. Luckily she had fallen asleep next to the fire from sheer exhaustion, and the only person who heard was Alistair - he was on watch at the time.

Alistair soothed his fellow Warden with an explanation that it was normal, that he had them too. Not much comfort, but Lena took his words as he intended them - to help. Deciding sleep was a wash at this point, she joined him for the watch. The pair sat together staring at the fire, discussing the Wardens, life at Highever and their respective families until the sun rose over the horizon.

Eventually they made it to the tower that housed the Ferelden Circle of Magi. But of course, nothing was ever going to be easy. The Knight-Commander informed Lena that there would be no help for the Wardens here - the Circle had broken, and the tower was awash with demons and abominations.

Horrified, Lena offered to help search the tower for survivors. She came for aid, at the end of the day, and without either the mages or the templars this entire trip would have been fruitless. There was also the small matter of a healer for Arl Eamon's illness.

Shrugging, the templar agreed to let the group in, but with the warning that they could not leave until the Circle was clear. His ominous warning about the Rite of Annulment sent chills down Lena's spine. No matter how dangerous the mages were, wholesale murder couldn't possibly be the answer. She promised herself that she would save every single soul she possibly could inside the tower.

Inside the tower she met Wynne - a mage she remembered encountering at Ostagar. Wynne was wary of the group as they approached, but Elena's earnest offer of help and the determined set of her jaw must have shown something to the elderly mage. She agreed that, with her help, the group could stop the madness occurring at the top of the tower.

Hearing an explanation from Wynne as to what happened, Lena, Morrigan and Alistair agreed that if they cut off the head of the snake then this situation would be over. While Morrigan thought they should just leave the mages to their own devices, she still agreed to help, if only because she had no other choice.

Resolute, they began the climb.

okay but elena cousland as a warden companion is so interesting. like, she grew up as a noble, she still is a noble. she looks terrible, her hair is cut so short you can’t even tell it’s wavy/curly. she almost never speaks without being spoken to, she has nothing to live for, she wants to stop the blight, she won’t let her brother’s death be in vain. she laughs at alistar’s jokes, she flirts back at zevran, she smiles at leliana, she cries herself to sleep. she never complains, she bathes as often as she can, she fights extremely well, when she talks to nobles she sounds like another person. which of them is the real elena? is it the noble girl who talks well, walks with her head high, and knows all of the right people to approach for the landsmeet? or is it the desperate girl who has nothing to live for, who is always angry, always sad, doesn’t complain about the mud, about sleeping in tents, about walking for days on end? when she sees her brother again maybe she’ll think surviving was worth it.
