Companies present prototype for mobile large-scale energy storage
Tumblr media
Companies in Zwickau give used batteries from electric cars a second life and have presented a new mobile large-scale storage device. It has a modular structure and can have capacities from 200 kilowatt hours to 2.5 megawatt hours, according to the presentation on Tuesday. The lithium-ion batteries used came from electric vehicles and were supplied by Mercedes-Benz Energy[1] in Kamenz.[2] They are installed in a common container, so that the memory is portable, it said.
The idea behind it: although the batteries in electric cars age, they can still store electricity after they have been used in the vehicle. For example, they can help to store electricity from the sun and wind for times when little electricity from renewable energies is available. According to the information, such large-scale storage systems can be used not only in wind and solar parks themselves, but also in a decentral way in companies. No information was given on the investment sum for the development. Depending on the capacity, the costs for such a storage system were given as between 200,000 and 300,000 euros.
"Now that the prototype has passed all the load tests with flying colours, we are now starting to optimize it for series production," explained the owner of the Elektro Lippmann company[3], Steffen Lippmann. His company developed the storage tank together with Erlos Produktions- und Recycling GmbH[4] on behalf of the Zwickau-based WP Holding.[5] There is a lot of interest in the different types of storage, explained Erlos Managing Director Matthias Schmidt: "We have received inquiries from all over Europe."
Elsewhere in Saxony, people are also working on the second life for used batteries from electric vehicles. At the end of September, for example, the company JT Energy Systems[6] in Bobritzsch-Hilbersdorf[7] near Freiberg presented a power storage device consisting of more than 10,000 battery modules that were previously used in electric forklifts, for example. If there is an oversupply in the grid, electricity is stored there and fed back in later when required.

How We Think about E-Waste Is in Need of Repair
From its crowded streets, Hauqiangbei, looks like any other crowded Chinese shopping district, packed with streetside malls, snack vendors, and people in a sharp-elbowed hurry. But if you slip into any of these malls, it quickly becomes apparent that Huaqiangbei, located in the heart of Shenzhen, China’s electronics design and manufacturing hub, is unlike anywhere else on Earth.
SEG Plaza, at the heart of the Huaqiangbei District, doesn’t look like a paragon of green innovation when you walk into it. The main floor is packed with kiosks and stalls selling a riot of the sorts of things you find only inside your computers: cables, RAM, CPUs, and fans. They’re spooled, hung, and displayed in cases, looking not unlike a high-end butcher shop that might specialize in snakes and other coiled objects. Look up, and you’ll see nearly ten floors of similar vendors selling similar wares.
Who bothers coming here? The city’s engineers and product designers in search of the pieces and parts necessary that can help them build tomorrow’s—or today’s—electronics. Need an Intel 486 CPU from the early 1990s? Someone at SEG Plaza can get it for you in bulk. Want the motherboard from a 2002 vintage Dell laptop? The man selling Dell motherboards will ask how many you need for tomorrow.
Where does it all come from? In years past, much of the hardware in Huaqiangbei was imported from developed countries such as the United States, disassembled in infamously unsafe workshops elsewhere in South China, and then funneled into Huaqiangbei. It’s a trade that was widely misunderstood and that has saddled China with a reputation as the world’s electronic wastebasket. But the reality has long been far more complicated.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY ELECTRONIC WASTE?
How can you safely deal with waste from your electronic devices? We have ever more technology in our homes that we also renew often. If this waste is not correctly dealt with, it can be dangerous for us and for the environment. You've surely asked yourself more than once what to do with that phone you no longer use; we are here to tell you how you can recycle your mobile, your different chargers, the compact camera that no longer works, where to recycle your batteries... how you should deal with these and other potentially polluting products, and what would happen if you didn't: A mobile phone Did you know that up to 92% of your mobile can be used to manufacture new equipment? In Spain, less than 2% of all waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is recycled and a mobile phone contains hazardous toxic components that should go to a recycling plant and not landfill.
A recent report from the United National Environment Programme warned that around 40-50 million tonnes of this type of waste are produced every year globally and it forecast 'serious consequences' from the mountains of 'hazardous' and 'toxic' waste that is piling up without any control. How can we avoid this? Easy: recycle. There are many companies that recycle and even purchase your old phone and, although not a large sum of money, it is something in addition to a guarantee that those materials are correctly repurposed and/or recycled. The closest Recycling Point to your home is one of the options. You can throw away other devices such as cameras, tablets, computers, etc. here in complete safety. Batteries The changes to chargers and batteries (laptops, mobiles, cameras) have reduced energy consumption and, in some way, their hazardous nature, although this remains high. Almost 30% of the weight of batteries is down to toxic materials such as Mercury, Cadmium, Nickel, Magnesium, Lithium and Zinc. Some of these elements are really polluting, mainly if they come into contact with water and dilute into reservoirs or rivers. These pollutants concentrate uncontrolled in the nation's landfills, with very serious consequences that are barely documented. What can we do? Once again, recycling by professional companies or leaving them at Recycling Points. Batteries We still have some devices at home that work with batteries. For this reason it is important to be aware that they contain heavy potentially hazardous metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead. Batteries are therefore considered to be special waste and are subject to specific collection and processing. Which pollutes the most? The one with the button. Leave them at Recycling Points or other collection points, such as those in advertising posts in our cities or at supermarkets and shopping centres. If these toxic components (especially heavy metals such as mercury or cadmium) are dumped without any control in nature, rainwater can carry them to underground water courses and from here, towards rivers and the sea, with a possible impact on living beings. In the event of uncontrolled fires, metals evaporate and spread in the air; when it rains, they end up in the earth and in rivers, and this is why it is so important that they are correctly processed. Most heavy metals are bioaccumulative and pass from one organism to another via the food chain. Make the most of the useful life of your electronic devices and when you decide to throw them away, do it safely!

10 tips for managing e-waste
1. Buy less.
Buying things we simply do not need is probably the biggest cause of e-waste. We need to stop (really, STOP) and ask ourselves if we even need a gadget or electronic item BEFORE we buy it.
We need to activate that voice in our heads that prevents us from buying electronic items we simply don’t need.
2. Organize what you have.
If you don’t organize your gadgets, wires, connectors and DVDs, you”ll never really know what you have. The last thing you want is to buy something you think you need it, only to find a duplicate buried in your cabinet.
Both my husband and I are active consumers of technology, and we have to be organized enough to know what we have in order to prevent buying duplicates.
3. Give away or donate your e-waste.
If you don’t need a thing, donate it so someone else can use it. Donations are great for tax deductions; often the amount will be close to the value of the item if you tried to sell it.
If something you have isn’t worth donating, maybe give your stuff away for free on sites
4. Take them back to the store.
A few stores have a buy-back program. Before you purchase a new gadget at a store, ask the store if they’ll buy back your old camera, laptop, or any other electronic. Best Buy has a trade-in option, where you can get rid of your old equipment in exchange for Best Buy gift cards.
5. Sell.
Craigslist and eBay are the best places to sell electronic items.
Sell your electronic items as soon as you don’t need them; they lose value rapidly when newer models come on the market. Craigslist is a good option to sell heavy or lower value items, since shipping isn’t involved.
6. Learn about your local recycling options.
If you’re in the United States, the EPA website has information on your local options for recycling electronics. No matter where you live, check out your options to recycle locally, and share them with your family and community.
7. Think ahead.
We actually had to pay to toss a bunch of electronics the last time we moved. We didn’t have enough time to find people that wanted what we had, which felt terrible.
There’s no quick way to get rid of e-waste—we have to dispose of them sooner or later, so why not make money on them now? Don’t let them pile up.
8. Live in the cloud.
There’s really no need to buy a large server or heavy-duty machines for either work or personal storage. Dropbox or Amazon’s AWS cloud are great for backing up and syncing your files across multiple devices, without having to invest in a server.
9. Make a good-e-bag.
I go to a number of conferences where they give away memory sticks and random little gadgets. I made a good-e bag with all the items collected from these conferences, and I hand these out to people that could actually use them.
10. Educate yourself, and be a little afraid.
Most electronic gadgets have toxic materials in them, so it is extremely important to dispose of them the right way. Educate yourself, your kids, and your friends. These toxins should push us to be more mindful of e-waste.

Introduction to Electronics (E-Waste) Recycling
Electronics waste, commonly known as e-scrap or e-waste, is the trash we generate from surplus, broken, and obsolete electronic devices. Electronics contains various toxic and hazardous chemicals and materials that are released into the environment if we do not dispose of them properly. E-waste or electronics recycling is the process of recovering material from old devices to use in new products.
Frequently Replaced Electronics
With such a very short useful life, electronics transition into e-waste at a rapid pace. In fact, it was estimated that close to 500 million unused cell phones are accumulating in people's homes. Globally, a cell phone is sold to around 25% of the population annually, and every year millions of electronic devices such as mobile phones, TVs, computers, laptops, and tablets reach the end of their useful life.
What Happens to Devices at the End of Their Useful Life
Unfortunately, the majority of these electronic products end up in landfills, and just 12.5% of e-waste is recycled. According to a UN study, over 41.8 million tons of e-waste was discarded worldwide, with only 10%–40% percent of disposals appropriately done. Electronics are full of valuable materials, including copper, tin, iron, aluminum, fossil fuels, titanium, gold, and silver. Many of the materials used in making these electronic devices can be recovered, reused, and recycled—including plastics, metals, and glass.
In a report, Apple revealed that it recovered 2,204 pounds of gold —worth $40 million—from recycled iPhones, Macs, and iPads in 2015.
Benefits of E-Waste Recycling
Recycling e-waste enables us to recover various valuable metals and other materials from electronics, saving natural resources (energy), reducing pollution, conserving landfill space, and creating jobs. According to the EPA, recycling one million laptops can save the energy equivalent of electricity that can run 3,657 U.S. households for a year. Recycling one million cell phones can also recover 75 pounds of gold, 772 pounds of silver, 35,274 pounds of copper, and 33 pounds of palladium.
On the other end, e-waste recycling helps cut down on production waste. According to the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, it takes 1.5 tons of water, 530 lbs of fossil fuel, and 40 pounds of chemicals to manufacture a single computer and monitor. 81% of the energy associated with a computer is used during production and not during operation.
