And this is one of the countless reasons I love chatting about Mafin with @midniteowlet: she's my very own toma a Tierra and grounds me, so I can approach things more rationally.
Upon concluding our debate of the current turn of events on the show, Mafin on the whole and their narrative? I've come to look at things as follows. The show very much reflects society as it is: a sad state of affairs where good people hurt and unsavory characters often prevail. The fact that we want everything good and wholesome to triumph at every turn? Idealistic, not realistic. Not to mention lofty expectations actually prevent one from truly appreciating the show, with all its ups and downs and winding roads. And personally, I'd like to keep enjoying it, without getting dragged down the utopian rabbit-hole.
For the most part, the representation we get is actually well crafted: Mafin feels organic, tried and true, and the chemistry between them is undeniable and thrilling. More so? Their story doesn't feel forced and thus, can be promoted to any viewership without it coming across as preachy and condescending, or having an agenda. If anything, Mafin is by far the best developed, healthiest relationship on the show. I, for one, much prefer the portrayal of good communication, heartfelt romance and overcoming obstacles together than a deluge of r-rated scenes. And honestly? We are being offered a damn good story here, even as it fails to satisfy everyone's hopes and demands (which in all honesty, it never could - at the end of the day, someone will always be disappointed)
I'm also reminded of Marta B. mentioning in a recent interview that the show is not aimed exclusively at the sapphic community. As such, it will not depict or cater to its particular needs. It's part of a larger ensemble and needs to appeal to a broad audience. And, when all is said and done, it actually manages to accomplish more with this kind of storytelling: one that's simpler, one that doesn't try to be pedantic. Ergo, they will not linger and preach to the audience. What they will do instead is allow the characters, their circumstances and actions, to speak for themselves. And they will trust they're doing a good enough job to let people draw their own conclusions. So far, I think they've achieved that: there’s heterosexual people watching the novela who love Mafin and think they’re the best couple on the show, there’s elderly people learning to be more open-minded, everyone loves Damian's character development, everyone hates Santiago and acknowledges he is a despicable lowlife etc. The show is moving the pieces along the board quite deftly and it makes for an interesting, if not always gratifying, game.
As for today's episode? There's no doubt that Marta and Fina only have eyes for each other. They're an established couple who will face anything thrown their way as they always have, as one. No mustachioed men will ever change that. Marta and Fina's narrative will never be whether they desperately adore each other. That they do couldn’t be more obvious. Their story? Ever has it been, and will continue to be, about their fight to attain freedom: freedom to live their love in a society that forbids it.
Therefore, I've reached the point where I'm not worried at all about either Santiago or Pelayo. Based on Pelayo's reaction upon learning Marta is a lesbian? I doubt he'll help Santiago in his attempt to sink Marta's ships. To me he comes across as a calculated businessman, but not a heartless one. He stands to profit more from a partnership with the de la Reina family than throwing Marta to the wolves. He also didn't bat an eye at Santiago's reveal, wasn't surprised or outraged. Which, I'll go out on a limb and say, is telling. He's either gay himself or simply plans on advancing his business / political career by securing a partner that won't demand his attention or affection. The first scenario ensures he remains socially upstanding while the second allows him to live as he pleases. To a man like Pelayo? It's a jackpot either way. Hopefully, the benefits outweigh the costs for Marta as well, should the plot move in that direction. And given all the signs? It's already halfway there.
That being said. It remains to be seen what happens to Santiago. I assume, and hope, his little ploy at denouncing Marta to the Civil Guard will cost him, dearly or otherwise. His own thirst for vengeance pushed him to make the wrong move which is, in my opinion, seeking out Pelayo. And while there's plenty of outraged cries that Marta & Fina don't need another man to save them? Let's not forget it's 1958. The likelihood of neither of them attracting a suitor, fake or otherwise unwelcome, is as doubtful as improbable. The fact they managed to successfully evade them so far? Quite the feat.
As for what awaits? Marta won't go to jail, I think, since that card has already been played. Or who knows? We might be surprised. The fear they need to instill in her requires new heights, in order for Marta to reluctantly accept another cage. Mind you, she's still trapped: as much freedom as she currently wields, Marta remains a woman whose very social status entraps her, singling her out as prime real estate. She's the proverbial golden goose, especially as dictated by the mores of society back then. Marta and Fina's shared dream of freedom remains, for now, a dream. One they've almost had at their fingertips, which makes their current circumstances all the more painful. I will say: it stings that Fina won't be the first to read Marta's journal. Undoubtedly, at some point, she will. After all, that journal is a mirror of Marta's very heart. It lays out her deepest fears, her innermost longings. It chronicles the fiercest battles Marta has had to wage with herself, her losses and triumphs, her meditations and hymns, the anguish and the deliverance of her love for Fina. To have it fall into the wrong hands? A violation of the utmost personal, a desecration of what is deemed sacred and untouchable. The diary symbolizes Marta having a safe space to call her own, one where she was allowed to embrace her true self, one that initiated her journey to freedom, her quest to rid herself of her shackles. Santiago has no honorable bone in his body and his hatred towards women, and Marta in particular, drives him to invade and vandalize her privacy, this blessed sanctuary she got to call her own. Let's see if Pelayo rises to the occasion and proves himself as a noble character. You can never have too many allies. Do I still take issue with how certain things are handled, with the inconsistencies and shoddy character work? Definitely. But I’m also able to simply sit back and enjoy. Let's see where all this goeth, shall we? Hello pain, let's go again.

give me a cheesy holiday movie but with lesbians.
give me the uptight business woman who is only uptight because she came out just before going to college and her parents called her worthless
give me the happy-go-lucky girl who has happiness and support in found family
give me the hot cocoa kisses and walking through the christmas tree farm that is locally owned by an elderly gay couple and is taken care of by their gay son
give me a cartoonishly sinister villain that is chased out of town while having candy canes thrown at them by the residents of the town for their treachery
give me them falling in love EXACTLY how a straight movie does it but for gay people
it’s the least that hollywood could do after all the hallmark movies those of us in the queer community have had to sit through
i originally wrote this many, many years ago and it still holds true and even more so because companies and executives don’t seem to think that sapphic and wlw relationships in shows matter or are interesting
but i don’t want to make this a sad post. i just want happy lesbians in holiday movies. we deserve bad and cheesy movies about us
#lesbian#wlw#sapphic#lgbtq#lgbtqia#christmas#christmas movies#hallmark movies#hello i’m very gay i’d like a few dollars

The Wilderness: A Psychotic Morally Bankrupt Exercise in Petty Feminist Immaturity
I've been preoccupied lately with the alarming trend of female power fantasies in media involving committing acts of crime and overall evil and not only getting away with it but revealing in a strangely moral superiority and smugness in the acts itself.
Shows and Movies such as "Anatomy of a Scandal", "Last Night in Soho", "Gone Girl", and recently "The Wilderness". Three of which started as novels by female writers. All have a very dubious premise of a so called "Wrong Woman" getting revenge on their spouse or boyfriend by dark and extremely immoral ways and are anointed as heroines by the writer for the supposed "Liberation" of the female protagonist by committing otherwise heinous acts that do not fit the crime they're supposedly avenging.
"The Wilderness" is one of the most dangerously psychotic and frankly one of the most immature examples of this trend of the female revenge fantasy. In which Olivia (Played by the amazing Jenna Coleman) murders her husband's mistress and then proceeds to cover up the crime under the guise of helping her unsuspecting husband protect himself, before framing her husband for the crime she committed. Then, in the end, the show frames this all as an empowering and heroic triumph, despite Olivia murdering two otherwise innocent people.
It is uncomfortably unhinged to go through the reasoning of the show that Olivia who killed her husband's mistress and beat the mistress's boyfriend's head in with a stone is less guilty than her husband who was cheating on her since they moved from London to New York. That somehow killing two people is less worse than her husband's serial infidelities with his American female workmates. Most of all is the strange encouragement and affirmation from other female characters like Olivia's mother and even the goddamn female Police Detective investigating her. They all continuously tell Olivia that she's not evil and what she did isn't bad, despite the fact that two innocent people are dead because she killed them.
I find it a disturbing growing trope in female led fiction that if one feels a certain way that any action taken from those emotions are valid and morally justified no matter what is done. That hurt feelings translating to an unhinged violent or transgressive action against someone is affirmed as empowering if said person has indeed emotionally wronged the female protagonist. Thus a cheating husband is far worse than the wife that murders because somehow he is the reason that his wife is killer. It is not only childishly immature logic of a toddler throwing a tantrum but outright ignores any personal responsibility of the female protagonist's own actions.
I'm for darker and more complex female characters, but said female characters should face consequences for their evil actions.
Also, I'd also like to address the racist trope of the "Magical Black Lesbian" that is also showing up a lot lately in white feminist fiction. The frankly immature Sapphic fantasies of women who think that all of their love life problems would be solved by simply being in a relationship with another woman - ignoring the fact that domestic abuse among Lesbian couples is at 64%. But the growing trend of portraying gay black women as some sort of wise and sainted reverent figure borders uncomfortably on the "Old Black Uncle" of mid-19th century antebellum literature in which usually young white female characters are seen as safe and comfortable with non-threatening elderly black men.
Now, in this strange cultist thinking of progressive white women, they've turned the elderly black grandfather into a lesbian black woman who serves two masters of being sainted for her sexuality and skin color while allowing the white liberal woman to show off her virtue by opening herself to the possibility of being in a safe and nurturing lesbian relationship with someone of the "Underclass" thus taking on their supposed racial and marginalized status and giving them a higher sense of virtue in their own eyes.
I find it all disgustingly dehumanizing, taking a skin color and sexual preference and washing down into a moralistic object of shallow progressive cultist belief rather than see them a person with flaws and prejudices like anyone else.
"The WIlderness", despite stellar acting performances by the main cast - especially from Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohan - remains a rather disgusting and degenerate pieces of morally bankrupt trash.

LGBTQIA+ recommendations
Hello everyone!! it’s been a while. I DID plan to write some lgbtqia+ recommendations for each day then i got swamped with exam stuff, coursework and then by my actual job so i apologise for that. I thought instead I would just do afew at a time as it’s easier on me.
I won’t be spoiling anything and warnings will be given for any sensitive topics.
Our dreams at dusk
Trigger warnings for suicide attempt, homophobia,

I feel like this one is gonna be a long one, as this is one of my favourite manga ever. The creator (who is asexual and identifies as x-gender) is Yuhki Kamatani and their art is so beautiful, I adore the character designs, as well as the environments. The panels do so much more than convey a physical image, it’s as if you can almost FEEL the emotions of the characters. That’s just one of the many things i can commend them for. It’s a mature, honest and very much REAL story about how members of the community live within society, as well as how a lot of them feel but also the power behind having support from each other. It’s a fairly short manga (only four volumes) and is therefore easy to read and won’t take too long. i literally beg of you all to read it. I can’t stress enough how emotional it is.

The protagonist is named Tasuku Kaname and he is a high school student who has had rumours spread about him being gay. He is seen on a bridge contemplating ending his life until he meets a mysterious person who is simply named Someone. Like the author, they are asexual however their gender identity is indeterminate. Kamatani stated he uses any pronouns. Someone is the owner of a drop-in centre type thing which is for people who identify as LGBTQIA+. Through the course of the story Tasuku and the reader learn the stories of it’s other members: Haruko and Saki, a sapphic couple who dream of getting married but one of them struggles with fears of burning their relationships with her parents, Shuufi who is a younger child that is questioning their gender identity, Utsumi who is a transgender man, Tchaiko who is an elderly member of the group who’s partner is passing away. His partner, Agawa, has a son who does not know Tchaiko is in a relationship with his father.
Butterfly Soup
Content warnings: homophobia, racism against members of the asian and black community, islamophobia, abusive parents, mentions of sex (none is actually shown), self-hating thoughts, mentions of conflict between China and Taiwan

Butterfly Soup is a small visual novel game on PC which was created by Brianna Lei. There are playthroughs on youtube if you can’t access them. There are two games so far so this is about both of them. It’s another very authentic telling of both being queer and also a teenager, it’s messy, it’s beautiful, it’s clumsy, it’s weird, it’s funny . It’s all these things and I think that’s a very universal thing, especially for LGBTQIA+ people. That’s where the analogy “butterfly soup” comes from. My favourite quote in the entire story is “did you know during metamorphosis, inside the chrysalis the caterpillar turns into soup? If you want to be a butterfly, you have to be the soup first.” The game deals with some pretty difficult topics, yet it is still rather wholesome and definitely hilarious. The artstyle, while rather simple, is ADORABLE.

(as a lesbian myself this is the most relatable panel ever…)
The characters are in that stage of life where they are trying to figure themselves out. It’s also about queer romance, difficult relationships with parents, and simply baseball as well. It’s important to note that the characters are all from Asian backgrounds, which ties into both their characterisation and their struggles. I, myself, am not asian and therefore won’t really speak on this topic as I don’t really feel as though I can properly determine how well they are portrayed in that respect. There isn’t much of a story though the premise is the romance between characters Diya, a quiet, socially anxious jock and Min-Seo, a delinquent. There are also Noelle, an uptight star-student, and Akarsha, who is an agent of chaos. Their relationship becomes a bigger focus in the second game.

Uni is being very mean but I’m slowly slowly trucking along with Ella+Alfred chapter 3! Here’s some finished lines!

This one’s BY FAR the longest one yet, 24 pages, twice as long as ch.2. Plenty of dysfunctional sapphic mess Nancy, and the formal introduction to the Giannis, the elderly couple who runs the diner Nancy works at! And Ella gets very mean (though those aren’t lined yet, this one’s the fluffy half of it!), There‘s gonna be unplaceable sapphic yearning, one lousy fight scene, and a slightly different art style every panel (who needs consistency, right?), I’m excited even with how slow this is going.

Hey. Could you rec any podcasts with sapphic couples as their mains? Or a sapphic story. And so on. I only really know about where the stars fell and Alice isn't dead.
You're off to a strong start. Here's 20, there's more out there, but I tried to pick a variety. I'm going to put a ★ next to the ones I think will fit best, but they're all good.
Arden: (Fictional "True Crime", Investigative, Comedy). On the 25th of December, 2007, heiress and young actress Julie Capsom crashed her car into a tree and fled into a nearby forest clearing, leaving a trail that seemingly vanished into thin air, and a dismembered torso in the trunk. A decade later, Bea, the first reporter on the scene, and Brenda, a detective on the case, are hosting a true crime podcast about it, and neither is remotely impressed with what the other has to say. Arden is also a retelling of various Shakespeare plays.
The Author's Anathema: (Horror) Looking for some extra cash, and with some help from her girlfriend Eleanor, college student Natalie takes a small job to narrate an audiobook for a reclusive anonymous author. The book being a horror wouldn't be such a bother, but the stories within are... Familiar. Too familar.
The Beacon: (Urban Fantasy) Bee is a perpetually anxious university student who discovers she has the ability to create fire, and decides to start a podcast to find others like herself. She quickly discovers she's not alone, but a series of bizzare animal attacks suggest superpowered freshers are far from the only strange thing on campus.
The Department of Variance of Somewhere, Ohio: (Weird Fiction, Horror, Sci-Fi) On day one of a new job at the Department of Variance, in the middle of her workplace orientation, Jasmine's new workplace goes into lockdown. Guided via walkie-talkie by Scarlet, an experienced security officer, Jasmine must make her way down 20-odd shifting floors of strange entities and experiments. Ideally without becoming one of them. As a disclaimer, this one is the only addition to this list that isn't actively romantic yet, however there are canonically sapphic characters, and I am fairly confident it's headed that way.
★ Elixir: (Urban Fantasy, Romance) Set in a fantasy world's equivalent of the american prohibition, lawmakers daughter Elsie approaches someone unexpected in search of her missing sister: Vera, an alchemist and propriator of the local now-elicit hush bar.
The Far Meridian: (Magical Realism) An agorophobic young woman wakes up to discover her lighthouse home has moved overnight. It quickly becomes clear this isn't a once-off, and she decides to use this as an opportunity to search for her missing brother, having some strange encounters along the way.
Interference: (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Romance) Jacq is a D&D podcaster. Geneva is an orc scientist studying ancient human ruins the next world over. What happens when these women from different realities begin picking up each other's broadcasts?
Khôra Podcast: (Sci-Fi) Somewhere between adapted from and inspired by various greek myths, Khôra follows four women who deserved better (Atalanta, Echo, Medea, and Medusa) on a grand space adventure to find the golden fleece while keeping out of the reach of the olympians who own and run the galaxy.
★ Mabel: (Mystery, Supernatural, Horror, Romance). The live-in carer of a dying elderly woman attempts to contact her granddaughter, with little success. The contents of voicemails only get stranger, and what starts as a subtley creepy mystery-horror develops to poetic lesbian fae body-horror.
★ Midnight Radio: (Light Supernatural, Romance). Sybil McIntyre, host of the ever-popular 1950's nightly radio hour, begins exchanging letters with an old fan who has reluctantly returned to visit Sybil's beloved town.
Mina's Story: (Sci-Fi, Romance Elements) Still dealing with a major loss in her family, a young woman volunteers for a long-term cryonics project. The episodes are her audio logs after waking up each time, always the same place but centuries after she went to sleep. A story about grief, change, and the intersection of past and future.
Mirrors: (Sci-fi, Mystery, Supernatural). The audio journal of three women from different periods (past, present, and future) who seem to share little in common bar the strange inhuman, ghostly figures they have started seeing.
Night Life: (Supernatural, Noir) Utterly wacky one-episode story (more of a short audio movie) about an ex-vampire hunter turned private eye who finds herself dealing with the shenanigans of mafia and vampires in the wake of an upcoming mayoral election. Find it on the feed for The Lightning Bottler.
The Night Post: (Supernatural, Mystery). The conscripted couriers of Gilt City are both respected and shunned, integral to the city's function, but inexplicably tied to the supernatural. It's not something they like to talk about. When his husband goes missing on the job, Milo is called to take over. Clementine took over from her father a long time ago, yet recently someone else with her face has been delivering her own unsent letters. Val's not going to discuss how she ended up there, but she will absolutely open people's mail (filled with their own supernatural tales) to read aloud.
Palimpsest, Season 2: (Horror, Romance, Fantasy Elements). Set in the 1800s, a young woman becomes the maid to a supposed fairy noblewoman, who is being kept as one of many "denizens", living curiousities, in a large house. Each season is a different story, this is Season 2.
★ The Pasithea Powder: (Sci-Fi, Thriller?) The last major interplanetary war was full of atrocities, but none more infamous then the creation of Pasithea Powder, a memory altering drug which was used to horrible effect and landed it's entire team of creators in prison. So when decorated war hero Captain Sophie Green sees one of them wandering free, worlds away from his prison, she gets in touch with a very old, estranged friend: one Dr. Jane Gonzalez, who's behind bars for the very same reason.
Starship Q Star: (Sci-Fi, Comedy) The small crew of a tone-deaf space agency's attempt at a PR mission wake up at Mars to discover that they - and the one botanist abandoned on Mars base - are now the last surviving members of humanity. Co-captains and ex-girlfriends Aurelia and Sim must now dedicate themselves to protecting their crew and finding a new home, but they're rarely on the same page about how best to do it.
★ The Strange Case of Starship Iris: (Sci-Fi) When the shuttle carrying the crew of scientific research ship Iris explodes, Violet Liu finds herself stranded in space, the last survivor with no way out. Until her emergency broadcast is picked up by a passing ship. But the crew aren't who they seem to be, there's more going on here than anyone knows yet, and Violet must decide who she can really trust.
Unwell: (Supernatural). Lily Harper revisits her supposedly haunted childhood home to help take care of her aging mother. The house is weird, sure, but there's something far stranger haunting the town of Mount Absolm than simply ghosts.
Weaver: (Supernatural, Romance Elements). The musings of the entity within the old house about the girl she fell in love with (the only thing she can remember), and her two new coinhabitants, who do not yet know she exists.

Playlist for Emmerdale's Newest gay storyline starring Arthur Thomas.
So I've been eagerly waiting for some to start a dedicated playlist or channel for Arthur like past gay emmerdale storylines like aaron dingle and robron since his gay story has started but since no one has stepped up, I figured I would make a Playlist of his storyline on YouTube. I would describe it as almost heartstopper esque but with more soap opera drama, thankfully seems to be more uplifting and less like misery porn like other gay soap stories. Though so far Arthur's love interest, Marshall has a homophobic dad which is making him struggle with his feelings with Arthur but based on the tone of the storyline, I'm betting on a happy ending
Now it is missing a few scenes since im just putting together scenes that were uploaded to youtube previously but all the main story beats are there and the missing scenes were minor. If you really wanna see everything, dailymotion uploads full episodes of emmerdale and you can just look up what days/episodes Arthur has appeared in to see the few missing scenes
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV5tW7v8ygaW6AnQ9Vt8qYlQ5t_2JWKmc
P.S Emmerdale also has a canon trans man, elderly lesbians, 2 other sapphic women and a adult gay couple among their main cast at the moment. So it offers a lot of representation

uhm raeda for the ship thing?
So I want to start by saying that a canonical set of elderly sapphics with a non-binary character is extremely revolutionary and I’m glad to have it.
I want to continue by saying we’ve only seen one episode and one breakup scene between the two of them so I don’t have much of an opinion.
I definitely enjoy Raine and Eda’s relationship! The idea of exes reuniting and awkwardly remaneuvering their relationship while they try fighting a war is a good one and the Eda’s requiem scene took my breath away, they’re definitely great I just don’t have much to say on them. Just that they’re a nice couple. I hope we see more of them.

"like they know it’s going to end in flames but that burning warmth is something they can’t give up so easily" Boom. That is them to a T lol. One of their quotes even goes like with one asking the other after observing an elderly couple having a slow dance," Do you want to be like that?(she means happy/carefree/normal)" with the other replying, "We'd never make it that long, we'd consume each other before we got old". It is somehow able to be a soft moment but also bittersweet.
okay i absolutely have to watch this now bc i've been dying for a sapphic romance like this. thank you for convincing me ♥

When my girlfriend and I decided to turn our backs on the big city and move back to the countryside, my grandma said: “But folks like you are well better of in the big city! Suff like that is way more accepted there!”
“Folks like us” = a couple consisting of two femalse. “Stuff like that” = the queer stuff.
Long story short, we live in a house with 4 partys now. 50% of the people who live in this house are queer. Nobody has said one stupid thing yet. The other 50% (plus our landlord) are straight white elderly people, so we were afraid that they’d mind us planting our sapphic seeds in the pots nectdoors, but no.
Instead of homophobia and bullshittery, we get to enjoy the good music taste of our gay upstairs neighbour (including what sounds like impro songs and dances), the solo flute concerts of the elderly lady from upstairs, so heyyya, nobody seems to mind me belting out stuff from Wicked or practicing my rusty belcanto skills.
This house is queer and musically pleasing! I want to share it with all the queers out there who ever had bad housing experiences.
#rowan feels very gay today#and very grateful#that's what sitting in the sun writing and squirrelwatching does to me
