Jimin's thoughts are 오밀조밀

Long time no see! Today I'm bringing over a cute conversation between i-kookminers and k-kkms on Twitter. The lovely @goldenhickeysandramen sent it my way yesterday, and we woke up to replies from korean jikookers explaining the cultural context behind JK's words in a w-live. I found it so cute I couldn't not bring it to your attention here.

The first post was made by someone curious about why korean fans found this JK clip so adorable.

The phrase OP was pointing out is the following (JK's 27/03/23 live, min 51:51):

확실히 이게 사람마다 생각하는 게 많이 달라. Certainly, the way every person thinks is very different. 지민 형의 생각이 약간 오밀조밀하는 거 같아. Jimin hyung's way of thinking is a bit meticulous. 오밀조밀하다기보다 엄청 뭐라해야 될까… Well, more than meticulous, how should I say it...

The word he used to describe Jimin's way of thinking is 오밀조밀 (/oh-mil-cho-mil/). This word is a little difficult to translate because it's a 고사성어 (故事成語), aka a 4-letter-idiom that typically comes from ancient Korean literature or history.

(Before the invention of hangeul, the korean alphabet we all know, Korean used Chinese characters (also known as hanja) to transcribe Korean words and sounds. The heritage of this tradition can be found in words like this, or in the use of hanja in newspapers. Let me know if you want to know more about this!)

오밀조밀 is made up of these 4 characters: 奧密稠密.

奧 means deep, 密 means tight or dense (fun fact, it's one of the two characters that makes up the word 'secret', so it also has the meaning of 'hidden'. Secret in korean is 비밀 /bimil/ or ひみつ /himitsu/ in japanese, 秘密) and 稠 also means thick or dense.

But what does this word actually mean? Why did Jungkook using it cause so much fuzz?

Like OP and other korean fans have said, it's used to describe tightly packed, or delicate and meticulous things.

When I first saw the clip, I agreed with JK. Jimin's extreme attention to detail and delicate and catious thinking, both as an artist and a person, can surely evoke this word. I'd only ever seen that word used to describe someone's facial features, in one of those highly specific and slightly funny ways that Koreans have to compliment someone's physical traits, but I didn't think twice about JK's choice of words.

However, cultural nuance is so important and it cracked the code for me. Here's an explanation:

As you can see, the word still holds that delicate and tight meaning, but it's not used for abstract things such as thoughts. If you look up the hanja dictionary, it describes "a refined and detailed appearance regarding craftsmanship and skill/a very meticulous and detailed appearance." Synonyms include words like 'cute' and 'pretty' (아기자기 is one of them, which means small and cute, baby-like. Isn't that the most Jimin word you've ever heard??).

Like I told @goldenhickeysandramen, nobody knows (or loves) Jimin better than JK. So, yeah, of course Jungkook thinks that Jimin is 오밀조밀, despite how unconventional it may sound. Even his thoughts are pretty to him. 🥺💖

Hey! I thought of a question for you. What in your opinion was the most revealing moment of jikook's relationship, from a korean language standpoint? I know it might be very hard to answer since there are so many moments, but pick your favorite 💜 thank you! 🫂

OMG this is such an interesting question, and so hard to pick. I think most of the jikook moments that scream in whispers that they might be something more than friends are not just through the language, but everything that surrounds the familiarity and comfort and trust that surrounds the way they speak to each other.

I can point out Jimin's phone call to JK during his birthday live, the quiet words and the satoori slipping and that sweet "can i put you on speaker?" followed by JK refering to him as his "small and precious hyung."

I can talk endlessly about JK choosing the words pretty and cute to describe Jimin every. single. time. because his admiration for Jimin runs a little differently than it does with other members-- yes, they all love each other and he finds his hyungs smart, sexy, strong, incredibly cool and fascinating-- but his way of describing Jimin just pulls my heartstrings. Because he respects him as an artist so much, and their work ethics are copy-paste (that's why it's always these two staying for longer rehearsals, why they ride the same car on and off work, etc.) but he also finds him sexy, charming, pretty, cute, cute cute- even his toes are cute! The adjectives he uses for him are just slightly different, idk. it's so crazy

There's also this one moment from that Run BTS ep where they're both blonde and JK's mom tells JM she loves him (ALSO THAT!) where JK's saying "oh we're cooked all the other teams have smart members" and JM goes ??? YAH YOU HAVE ME? and he specifically says "넌 나를 가졌어?" which I think I already wrote a post about but basically, the verb he used was a little weird in the context they were in since it indicates a stronger sense of posession? that's why it's typically used to describe that someone is dating this or that person. Jimin was like I'm yours??? Isn't that enough for you??? (obv joking) AND IT'S JUST SO. UGHH. CAN YOU GUYS CHILL.

ALSO. god im going on and on about this but remember The NJ vlive? That's what did it for me. Jimin caressing his chest and then his chin, telling JK 'I love you' bc he was a little upset, a little pouty, and then whispering "I made my apology so may I go now?" to what Jungkook replied IN THE SOFTEST AND SWEETEST WHISPER "yeah you may" with a shy smile... I'm sorry but why is your hyung asking you for permission. Why is he suddenly talking formally and being all obedient.

Which btw, those switches to overly formal speech are so common with jikook when they're messing around, and it happened during his birthday call as well. it's always that little roleplay where JM loses his hyung privileges (only to take them back at the end lol).

Sorry, they drive me crazy.

I'm not sure this totally answered your question, but I'd say it's bc they are very catious with their speech and they just don't let certain things slip, or if they do, it's always under the pretense of a joke, so u can't really pinpoint one specific moment that tells-all. The complexity behind Jikook and their dynamic is what makes their bond so special and beautiful. 💗💗

It’s the segment titled ‘kpop superlatives’ where he gets asked ‘who is most likely to get emotional on stage?’

He answers with jm and then goes on a bit on a tangent about jm’s eyes and how he’s able to hold so much emotion within them. He kinda gets all starry eyed as he’s explaining it lol.

I feel like this was one of those instances where you really notice how his tone shifts when talking about jm:))

OH MY GOD i love this moment so much. The little smile on his lips as he goes on and on about Jimin, ugh. It's the way he observes Jimin with so much affection and how he describes his emotions with respect and admiration, I don't know. It's a way of saying he loves him without saying the word love.

This is a bit out of topic but I also love the word that JK used, 눈빛 /nunbit/ because it means 'look' but it's made of the words 'eye' and 'light'. Sometimes it's used to refer to the light or sparkle in someone's eye, and in this case, as he describes the feelings that Jimin holds in his gaze, I can't help but imagine his eyes glimmering, at the brink of tears, as they lock eyes across the stage. Korean is such a pretty language, and Jungkook's way of describing Jimin always makes it justice.

seeing how confident and radiant hobi was at jimmy fallon made me so happy and excited for the ot7 reunion, i swear i'm vibrating at a frequency that could shatter glass.

hobi always brings me peace and reminds me why i love them the way i do, plus he's such an amazing performer. i can't remember the last time i felt this genuine happiness after watching solo content but you can really tell the end of the hiatus is approaching now. the air is buzzing with expectation, like a promising spring.

I've been looking at my inbox and there are so many great asks, not just about translations but about your favorite jikook moments as well, that make me so happy but also sad because last year i let them pile up and now it's a bit late to answer to most, but I wanted to thank you sooo so much for your interest and support!

Opening this blog has sparked back my love for Korean and translating, while also pushing me to become a better korean speaker and translator. Exciting things are coming for me career-wise in relation to this hobby and I know it's just the beginning, but I wouldn't have taken that first step without a reminder that it's what truly makes me happy. <3

sorry I'm a little slow checking my inbox lately, social media in general is overwhelming. hope you guys are doing good, i'm overjoyed that we got to see JK after so long and hear him sing. I missed his voice! And of course it was great to hear updates on Jimin, I'm so glad they're together 💗

I've also been wondering what Hobi's cooking rn (I bet his album will be crazy good) and watching run jin episodes when I'm feeling down. stressing over the holidays and counting down the days until june.

re: my last answered ask, sorry it took so long to reply, I ended up reading a bunch of korean linguistics papers about plural marking and classifier languages to see if i could draw out some information to make my point clearer, and ridiculously lost track of time... needless to say i could Not find anything that would make it better LOL linguistics and academic language can be such a headache </3

there's not a day that i don't think about the jikook travel show. i'm super excited about namjoon's album, and i know i'll love it just as much as indigo if not more, so don't take this theory as a dismissal. i just have the feeling that jimin's album? ep? (at least a single) will come after rpwp and MAYYBE then we'll get the travel show for summer.

some of my twitter mutuals did say the show would be more appropriate for fall/winter since they went to sapporo and they could release it around jimin's birthday, which imo would work only if jin's solo comes out in summer (i feel like that's a bit rushed) and then jimin, and hobi's at the beginning of 2025. i don't think tae, jk or yoongi have any other projects lined up since tae already released friends (and i think he might have a collab in rpwp). yoongi i'm a 100% sure. jk... i think the travel show would make up for not having another single, we know he was the last one to release something so i doubt he had time to also prepare something else.

My ideal release schedule: may (rpwp) - june we're busy with jin returning and FESTA, if anything a late june announcement of jimins solo - july pjm2, with the travel show extending until august? mayyybe ending on jk's birthday? - then for jin and hobi, i think jin's album could be ready by late october or the start of november. for hobi, i'm betting spring 25, earliest would be February. but i think they might want to keep less time between a release and the other members coming home.

watch all of this be wrong, lol. we'll see !

do we ever think about how jikook fell in love? drawing aside all the obvious disclaimers (this is just speculation, we don't know anything, yadayada) i just think... a lot about their journey. the obvious shift in 2015 and in 2017. their beginnings, such a shy love that developed into loud declarations. serving together. ITS SO CRAZY. I think about how they realized, how scary it must've been. When did they know? When did they decide it was a forever type thing? Honestly, regardless of the reality of their relationship, they have such a special bond. I wish we got more of them talking about what they mean to each other.
