Claire Wang at The Guardian:
Those who failed to produce papers were arrested. More than 400 people were detained and forced on a train back to Mexico, a place many had never been.
Itâs a scene many fear will come to pass in president-elect Donald Trumpâs second term, especially after he doubled down on a campaign promise to âlaunch the largest deportation operationâ in US history, and confirmed he would use the military to execute hardline immigration policies. But this particular episode happened in 1931, as part of an earlier era of mass deportations that scholars say is reminiscent of what is unfolding today. The La Placita sweep became the first public immigration raid in Los Angeles, and one of the largest in a wave of ârepatriation drivesâ that rolled across the country during the Great Depression. Mexican farm workers, indiscriminately deemed âillegal aliensâ, became scapegoats for job shortages and shrinking public benefits. President Herbert Hooverâs provocative slogan, âAmerican jobs for real Americansâ, kicked off a spate of local legislation banning employment of anyone of Mexican descent. Police descended on workplaces, parks, hospitals and social clubs, arresting and dumping people across the border in trains and buses.
Nearly 2 million Mexican Americans, more than half US citizens, were deported without due process. Families were torn apart, and many children never again saw their deported parents. Hooverâs Mexican repatriation program is, among mass deportation efforts in the past, most similar to Trumpâs stated plans, said Kevin R Johnson, a professor of public interest law and Chicana/o studies at the University of California, Davis, School of Law. [...] Since his first presidential run, Trump has invoked President Dwight D Eisenhowerâs mass deportation program as a blueprint for his own agenda. During the second world war, the US and Mexican government enacted the Bracero program that allowed Mexican farm hands to temporarily work in the US. But many growers continued to hire undocumented immigrants because it was cheaper. In 1954, the Eisenhower administration cracked down on undocumented labor by launching âOperation Wetbackâ, a yearlong series of raids named after a racial epithet for people who illegally crossed the Rio Grande. [...] The politics of deportation have always contained an important âracial dimensionâ, said Mae Ngai, a historian whose book Impossible Subjects explores how illegal migration became the central issue in US immigration policy.
Trump has deployed racist tropes against various ethnic groups, including Mexicans as drug-dealing ârapistsâ and Haitians as pet eaters, while lamenting a lack of transplants from âniceâ, white-majority countries like Denmark and Switzerland. Last month, sources close to the president told NBC News that he could prioritize deporting undocumented Chinese nationals. âHeâs been very clear about going after people of color, people from âshithole countries,ââ she said, referring to a 2018 remark from Trump about crisis-stricken nations like El Salvador and Haiti. Trump could plausibly deport a million people using military-style raids of the Eisenhower-era, Ngai said, but it is unlikely that he can expel 11 million undocumented immigrants. (According to an estimate by the American Immigration Council, deporting 1 million people a year would cost more than $960bn over a decade.) Still, Ngai said, his rhetoric alone could foment fear and panic in immigrant communities. But Eisenhowerâs immigration approach also differed from Trumpâs in notable ways, Ngai said. Though the administration did launch flashy raids, it also allowed farm owners to rehire some deportees through the Bracero program, essentially creating a pathway for authorized entry into the US. So far, Ngai said, Trump has hammered down on deportations without providing an option for legal immigration or naturalization. âHe doesnât know the whole story of âOperation Wetbackâ,â she said. Deportations also appear to have harmed the local economy.
Donald Trumpâs mass deportation proposal hasnât been the first time the US conducted mass deportations of Mexican-Americans, as it happened during the Herbert Hoover and Dwight D. Eisenhowerâs presidencies. The deportations were ruinous to economies and were a human rights disaster, and Trumpâs plan repeats that but turbocharges it.

Credit: Anything That Moves / The poem continues, but the point is clear from the start: Bisexual people aren't believed for who they are. They're belittled and told to "choose a side," that they're bisexual for attention. It's difficult to think that this poem is over 30 years old. The poem "truly could've been written yesterday... or 50 years ago," said Marshall. "How long do we have to keep screaming the same things to the world over and over until people stop pretending we're speaking another galaxy's language?" --- The solace of Anything That Moves, however, is that even though progress has been slow, fellow bisexual people can relate to the shared experience detailed in its pages.:https://www.tumblr.com/yourartmatters-itswhatgotmehere/770848263124500480?source=share

Metal Hammer Magazine December 2023 Enter The World Of Sleep Token - Revista Metal Hammer Dezembro 2023 Entre no mundo do Sleep Token
"We'll never see the band at this level again" Sleep Token fan Benji Purdy
A deep, distorted voice is coming through the PA of Los Angelesâ El Rey Theatre.
âDo you think they want you to cry?â itâs saying. âDo you think they like it?â
A second voice, lighter in tone but still distorted and oddly inhuman, replies.
âNot as such,â this one says.
âI think they just want to know that I am feeling something, feeling what they are feeling, perhaps.â
The audience in this ornate, 800-capacity venue stands silent, entranced by the voices. The band onstage are masked metal sensations Sleep Token, tonight playing their first headlining show in the City of Angels as part of their month-long North American Rituals tour.
The dialogue that is playing out around us is hugely significant to everyone in this sold-out crowd. It marks the first time crowned frontman Vessel â the lighter voice â has broken his silence in public. The deeper voice heâs communing with belongs to Sleep, the god-like entity at the heart of the bandâs lore. As the conversation continues, you could hear a pin drop.
âDo you think that this amount of crying is healthy for you?â Sleep asks.
âI donât know,â comes Vesselâs response. âBut at least I feel something. If I donât feel anything then why would I even do this?â
At this, the crowd lose their minds and a wave of mania ripples across the floor. That the voices are pre-recorded doesnât matter. Nor does the fact that this isnât, strictly, the first time itâs happened â Sleep Token have been doing throughout this tour. But modern metalâs most enigmatic band have done something theyâve never done before: theyâve cracked open the door and given us a tantalising glimpse into their inner world.
This show isnât the biggest Sleep Token will play this year. In December, they will headline Londonâs Wembley Arena. But Los Angeles, together with New York, is one of the epicentres of the US music business, and the buzz thatâs surrounding the anonymous band suggests that America is paying attention to them.
More than that, La La Land has always had a thing for cults, from the Manson Family to Scientology, as well as the countless smaller âspiritualistâ groups that operate in the city today. An anonymous, masked British band with their own mysterious, quasi-religious mythology? LA never stood a chance.
âThere is a new atmosphere at these live shows, an electricity,â says Benji Purdy, an American fan who also acts as moderator on the bandâs official Discord server. He first saw Sleep Token when they supported metalcore act Issues on a 2019 US tour. After witnessing their headlined show in Portland, Oregon a few days ago, he says theyâre an entirely different beast this time around.
âWeâll never see this band at this level ever again,â says Benji. âThey are catapulting themselves.â
2023 has been the year Sleep Tokenâs cult success went fully overground. On January 5, the band released Chokehold, the first single from then-upcoming third album Take Me Back To Eden. Twenty-four hours later, they chucked in another new song, The Summoning. By the time the track hit TikTok, videos of listeners reacting to the genre-defying sound were reaching users around the world, with some even hitting a million-plus views.
Their social media profile was helped by celebrity boosts from Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor, Architects singer Sam Carter and Lorna Shoreâs Will Ramos. And in May, they announced that Wembley date. All 12,500 tickets sold out in just 10 minutes. Sleep Token had officially become a arena band.
Chris Lody, a Sleep Token fan based in Coventry, set up a subreddit for the band back in 2018 after discovering they won their nomination for Best New Band at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods. The same year, he saw their first headline performance at St Pancras Old Church in front of 150 people. Heâs had a front row seat to their dizzying rise.
âTo go from that to Wembley in December, itâs incredible,â says Chris. âCreating the subreddit was a bit opportunistic really. Nothing like it really existed and I wanted to see what other people were saying about the band.â
It took a while, but fans eventually began to head to Chrisâs Reddit page to share their own interpretations of Sleep Tokenâs music, art and lore. After the release of Chokehold and The Summoning, the page exploded with new users.
âThe volume of people posting day-to-day is massive now,â says Chris, adding that it has grown from around 6,000 users to 34,500 at the time of writing. âWeâve had to take on more moderators just to maintain a bit of order.â
Much as the fandom has expanded, so too have the opportunities afforded Sleep Token. This summer, they stepped up to festival headliner status in the UK, with appearances at Portsmouthâs Takedown in April and Manchesterâs Radar in July. Radar organiser Joe James admits they lucked out with the timing of the bandâs booking.
âWe got them at that sweet spot that every promoter dreams of,â he tells Hammer. âWeâre a festival that wants to book progressive, contemporary music. Sleep Token tick all those boxes: theyâre doing something fresh and are at the top of their game at the moment.â
Headlining the first day of the festival gave the band a full âlimitlessâ rehearsal time, which in turn resulted in a truly headline-worthy performance.
âIt looked and sounded amazing,â Joe enthuses. âThey are so massive now, but they donât behave like theyâre blowing up just yet. I truly think theyâre the next Download headliners of the new breed.â
Itâs 4pm in Los Angeles when Hammer arrives at the El Rey Theatre, and queues are already stretching around the block in both directions. Some fans have brought chairs and blankets to sit on, while others are propping themselves up against the walls of the venue, clinging to the scant shade to avoid the glare of the Californian sun.
Amy McLaurin and her friend Sarah Hibbert are standing at the venue barrier. Theyâre from Virginia, and arrived at the El Rey at 9am, despite having fast-track passes that guarantee them priority entry.
âI found them on TikTok,â she says of how she discovered Sleep Token, with a nervous smile that suggests sheâs worried any gatekeepers will leap out and chase her away at any second.
The pair saw Sleep Token for the first time a couple of weeks earlier in Baltimore, but couldnât risk booking flights to come more than 2,000 miles to repeat the experience. Itâs doubly impressive because Baltimore was Amyâs first ever gig, full-stop.
âIâd never really found an artist I loved enough,â she says. âRight now theyâre everything I want in music. I listened to rock before Sleep Token, but not much metal â Iâve actually discovered more metal through them. I also met Sarah at the Baltimore show and we both decided to fly here.â
âThey make you think about things you otherwise wouldnât want to talk or be open about,â adds Sarah. âThese songs can mean something different to everyone, a universal pain we all feel but some might be less able to express that.â
Vessel famously doesnât do interviews â the only one he has given was to Hammer in the bandâs early days â but their fans have been more than happy to pick up the slack. Sleep Tokenâs official and unofficial social media channels are full of running narratives, memes and jokes.
It hasnât all been deadly serious, either. In April, a fan-filmed clip of an audience member at a gig in Sydney letting loose a âsinisterâ fart during the quiet part of the song Atlantic went viral. Similarly, after the release of The Summoning, a section of their fanbase dubbed Sleep Token âmetalâs sexiest band,â largely thanks to lyrics such as
"THEIR MUSIC TRANSCENDS THEIR PERSONALITIES" SLEEP TOKEN FAN CASSIE KNOX
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
âTHERE ARE SECRETS LEFT TO BE UNCOVEREDâ
Daniel Owen is the man behind the artwork of Sleep Tokenâs first two albums, 2019âs Sundowning and 2021âs This Place Will Become Your Tomb.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST COME INTO CONTACT WITH SLEEP TOKEN?
âAround early 2018. I ended up becoming one of their lead visual creatives from [that yearâs single] Jaws through to This Place Will Become Your Tomb, and some initial development on Take Me Back To Eden.â
HOW MUCH OF A BRIEF WERE YOU GIVEN IN EACH CASE?
âThe briefs behind each project have varied greatly in scope, but usually only restricted to a few lines â in the case of Sundowning per song - or a paragraph to explore the central idea of This Place Will Become Your Tomb. Symbolism throughout history has always been a communication method that encapsulates a sense of power and reverence; my work for the project has always aimed to champion atmosphere while masking a considerable amount of intention below the surface. âOne example would be the Sundowning sigils as a whole: being informed by the passing of time and mirroring the positions of a clock face, referencing the namesake of the album. Individually, each sigil was a cipher I'd developed that represented a hidden selection of elements relating to the singles that later served as artwork â eventually all would be removed from streaming services and become an intentionally forgotten to reflect one of the central themes of Sundowning and its primary cover. A beautiful part of working with a band is that there's an unparalleled level of bravery involved with taking the kinds of creative choices that many are too hesitant to pursue.â
SLEEP TOKEN PUT HIDDEN âCODESâ IN THEIR SONGS AND IMAGES. ARE THERE ANY SECRETS IN YOUR ARTWORK THAT FANS STILL HAVENâT DISCOVERED?
âThereâs certainly some things Iâve left seeded within my work thatâs ready to be pulled from the future if Iâm called upon. There are still some secrets left to be uncovered.â
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
âOr are you really here to cut me off? Or maybe just to turn me onâ and âI would be lying if I told you that I didnât think that I could be your man / Or maybe make a good girl bad,â combined with a raunchy bass drop in the songâs second half. This sexiness is something the band have leaned into on this US tour. During The Offering, members have been seemingly kissing through the masks, reportedly prompting a suitably ecstatic reaction from the crowd each time.
There are other, more wholesome displays of fandom, from fluffy crochet plushies to homemade necklaces. A video of guitarist IV putting on a cowboy hat given to him by an audience member at a gig in Dallas has yielded close to two million views on TikTok. Back at the barrier at the El Rey stands Cassie Knox, who has come to LA from Houston, Texas. Cassie has now seen the band eight times, including at Radar in the UK.
âSleep Token have a big thing about community,â she says matter-of-factly, when we ask whether it gets lonely following the band on tour. âI met two girls last night in San Diego, theyâre here with me and weâre also going to Anaheim [the next gig on the tour].â
While every fan has a personal answer for what Sleep Token mean to them, Cassieâs response seems to be shared by many. âThey taught me self-love,â she says, holding a sign stating as much.
In May, shortly before the release of Take Me Back To Eden, several select fans were invited to an exclusive listening session for the album in London. Chris Lloyd, who runs the Sleep Token subreddit, was one of them. He wonât divulge too many details of the event, but offers an anecdote that highlights the bandâs dedication to keeping their enigma intact.
âWe got there and there was just this stage with curtains,â he says. âThey opened at the start of the album and we thought there was a Vessel mannequin just in a chair. It was really dark and there were loads of smoke, but it was really exciting. Then right at the very end of the session, the âmannequinâ stood up and it was actually Vessel â heâd just sat perfectly still the whole time! It was insane.â
The band show no sign of changing their minds when it comes to preserving their mystique. Hammerâs request for an interview with Vessel is, predictably, turned down. But this anonymity is something that their devotees embrace. The golden rule of Sleep Token fandom is to never, under any circumstances, divulge or speculate on the membersâ real-life identities. Still, that hasnât stopped some people trying.
âThe mystery surrounding the band will always be a key element that draws people in,â says Discord mod Benji Purdy. âItâs a rabbit hole and people love diving into them. But I have found that since [2021 album] This Place Will Become Your Tomb, there has been a culture shift within the fanbase between those who want to respect the bandâs wishes to stay anonymous, and those who have a general lack of respect and think the band donât care.â
This ring of secrecy is intact today. Before the show, Hammer is sitting at a table in the taco restaurant adjacent to the El Rey. We can hear and see the security manager briefing in front of the venue.
âTonightâs show is Sleep Token,â the security manager says, marching along his ranks like a general on the eve of battle. âTheir whole deal is that they are anonymous. If anybody â anybody â tries to go where they shouldnât, you MUST. STOP. THEM.â
In reality, transgression seems to be the furthest thing from anyoneâs mind. The people queuing outside the El Rey are here to Worship, after all.
âTheir music transcends their personalities as individuals,â Cassie Knox tells us. âEverybody has a part in this music, and from the messages that the band have put out, it seems like thatâs exactly what he [Vessel] wanted.â
By the time the doors open, the excitement is palpable. Airport-style security gates mean everyone is thoroughly searched before entry and it seems half the audience has brought along trinkets, gifts and signs in their own expression of Worship. One fan has turned up with a bouquet of roses so big it is seen engulfed her head. They all make it through security without issue.
While some fans have been dressing up in full Vessel cosplay elsewhere on the tour, thereâs no such regalia tonight, although many have covered their faces with painted Sleep Token sigils. Equally, itâs striking just how youthful the crowd is as a whole.
âItâs been like this the whole tour,â reveals Matt de Burgh Daly, guitarist/keyboardsist with support A.A. Williams, as he sits down next to Hammer to grab a bite pre-show. Williams and her band previously supported Sleep Token on their 2021 UK tour, and now theyâre on these US dates, suggesting theyâre within the headlinersâ circle of trust.
âItâs funny actually,â Matt says between taco bites. âThis is actually one of the smaller shows on the tour, I think. But weâre pretty nervous.â
Oh?
âYeah, our drummerâs broken his arm â heâs having to play Def Leppard style!â
With its art deco exterior, crystal light fixtures, chandeliers and blood red decor, the El Rey Theatre feels more like it should be hosting a seance than a metal show. Itâs not your typical dive venue. But where Sleep Token arenât your typical metal band, sonically or visually.
From Hammerâs vantage point, a dark balcony overlooking the main floor, it looks like nearly everyone is adorned in some kind of Sleep Token memorabilia, be it t-shirts, hoodies, or even smaller items like necklaces or homemade earrings. A queue stretches from the merch stand to the barrier throughout the entirety of A.A. Williamsâ set and right up until Sleep Token themselves appear.
Sure enough, the headlinersâ arrival elicits a frenzy of activity. An extended shriek of pure ecstasy greets the band as they march onto the stage, and itâs not long before the audience is singing along ardently, tears literally streaming from some fansâ eyes.
Detractors may point to the prevalence of piano ballads in Sleep Tokenâs sound, but thereâs no shortage of heft in tonightâs set. Chokehold is explosive, its pendulum riffs cutting through the air like a buzzsaw. Hypnosis has the booming, almost floating menace of a great Deftones track, fans waving their arms wildly throughout.
Even in terms of physical presence, thereâs a marked difference from the band that toured in support of 2021âs This Place Will Become Your Tomb. Back then, Vessel seemed like a solid, rooted entity, his movements stiff and minimal, clinging to the mic-stand like he was tethered to it. This time out, heâs a ball of kinetic energy, bouncing, dancing and stalking his way backwards and forwards across the stage, even dropping to do push-ups during The Summoning. Bassist III and guitarist IV are similarly lively, headbanging furiously and commanding circle pits and walls of death with finger gestures and head nods.
The Take Me Back To Eden songs are especially visceral live. Vessel skitters across the stage during Vore like someone having an ancient entity, switching between howls and soulful melodies before intoning the songâs key lyric: âI want to give you all, but nobody else will ever go?â
For all the excitement, background chatter falls away completely when segments of conversation between Vessel and Sleep play out. The distorted voices discuss everything from the fandom to the role the masks play in their mythology.
âIn order for all of this to work there has to be a certain boundary in place,â Vessel says, his unearthly, pre-recorded voice spilling from the speakers. âThey need to be able to project themselves onto this, without anyone elseâs identity getting in the way. In turn, I need to be able to show my true self to them in a way that does not compromise their ability to connect.â
Thereâs certainly no shortage of connection as fans roar along to the likes of The Summoning, The Love You Want and Alkaline, some moved to tears as the music takes on new dimensions, the closing rave-metal thrust of The Offering ending the night on an exultant and triumphant note, before Vessel clasps his hands in thanks as Whitney Houstonâs I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) plays incongruously over the PA.
So where next for Sleep Token? In a year where they have notched up a Top 10 album in the UK â Take Me Back To Eden peaked at No 3 â and sold out venues around the world, itâs hard to say exactly where the ceiling could be for them.
âI could easily see them playing arenas here in the States within two years,â Benji states. âThe demand here is insane â as seen by the number of people whoâve lined up at every almost every show of this tour.â
For a British metal band to break into the US market is no mean feat, and the buzz and excitement Sleep Token are generating here is starting to catch up with the noise that surrounds them back home.
Equally, their pop sensibilities enable them to serve as a gateway, their success on TikTok showing they donât just appeal within the metal sphere, but to wider audiences whom then tumble further down the metal rabbit-hole after discovering them.
Uniting newcomers and dyed-in-the-wool metalheads alike, Sleep Token are a new breed of band, transcending genre boundaries by simply refusing to stay in one, and backed up by a mystery and spectacle all their own. They are as at home supporting Slipknot and Architects as they are appearing at festivals like Reading and Leeds â testament to just how influential and breakout theyâve become.
Crazy as it may seem, 2024 will likely be an even bigger year for Sleep Token, and theyâve already booked some of the worldâs most iconic venues in that period. With Wembley Arena and Alexandra Palace shows in the diary for next April, Sleep Token will be looking to cement their place at the top of the mountain. How long before the Worship of Sleep Token becomes a religion?

MASKS REVEAL THE ARTISTâS VISION
Mario Garvera and Beatrice Rebondi are MysteryStar, an art studio specialising in masks, costumes and accessories. They also created the Vessel mask
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN MASK-MAKING?
âWeâve always been drawn to the dramatic and theatrical aspects of expression, along with our shared love of music. We have produced thousands of pieces together over the decades. We never make replicas of our masks; they are, and always will be, one-off characters, created especially and never to be repeated.â
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH SLEEP TOKEN?
âIn early 2019 they were looking for a workable mask, as they hadnât found anything wearable that could work onstage yet. We provided [Vessel and Sleep Tokenâs management] with several sketches and worked out together how to keep Vesselâs character essence and vision, while creating something that could work on a human head and be practical onstage.â
WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES?
âIt took several modifications, especially around the shape of the head. We had to accommodate certain parts of Vessel was adamant were integral parts of the full-face mask for the photoshoots and a mouth - less one for tge stage perfomances. These were the first two masks that we made for Vessel.â
WHY DO YOU THINK WE FIND MASKED BANDS SO FASCINATING?
âMasks have always been important to humans since perhaps the beginnings of civilisation. Ancient tribes created masks, for recounting their history and transmitting knowledge of their young; for healings and for warding off their enemies. In addition, it could be because masks are a created expression of the artist â the one - who created it, as well as the one who wears it â and as such reveal something of the artistâs mind and their vision.â

Dozens of Homes Burned in California, as Wildfires Rage in the West. (New York Times)
Excerpt from this New York Times story:
Fueled by dry and windy weather, three massive fires in Southern California have now burned dozens of homes and forced tens of thousands of people to flee from communities east of Los Angeles.
One of them, in the San Gabriel Mountains above Los Angeles, ballooned by Wednesday morning to 48,000 acres, from a few thousand acres the day before. The blaze, known as the Bridge fire, has destroyed 20 homes in the Mount Baldy area, 13 in the community of Wrightwood and six cabins in rural areas, the chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Anthony Marrone, said at a news conference. An additional 2,500 structures are threatened, Chief Marrone said, and more than 10,000 people have had to evacuate their homes.
âThis is currently the largest active fire in the state of California,â he said, adding that the fire was not at all contained and that its cause was still under investigation.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has dispatched the National Guard to help with evacuations, and firefighters have been deployed from Northern California as well as from other states to help with the conflagrations.
Another fire, burning since Monday in a rural area of Orange County southeast of Los Angeles, has damaged or destroyed several homes, automobiles and other structures in the El Cariso Village neighborhood of Lake Elsinore, a city in Riverside County. The blaze, known as the Airport fire, grew to more than 22,000 acres as of Wednesday morning and triggered mandatory evacuations and school closures.
âI could see where flames were coming up to my property,â said Joel Pavelka, 55, who lives high up on the ridgeline of the Santa Ana Mountains.
In San Bernardino County, the authorities said they had arrested a 34-year-old contract delivery driver for FedEx as a suspect of arson in the Line fire, which damaged some homes near Running Springs overnight and was still burning on Wednesday near Big Bear Lake. [The Line fire is about 23,000 acres.]
All told, more than 70 large fires were blazing across the United States on Wednesday, mostly in the West, as a severe heat wave blanketed the region. So far this year, fires have torn through almost 7 million acres of land across the country â the largest acreage to have burned by early September since 2018, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

2018 VoicePlay fall activities â maintenance, music, and merriment
Heading into the end of the year, VoicePlay gradually ramped up their schedule until they were running at a decent clip for the holiday season.
.
Say cheese!
It had been nearly two years since they'd taken their previous set of promo photos, and enough had changed â Earl's lush beard, Geoff's longer hair â that the boys decided it was time for some new ones.
.
On the following Saturday, J.None and his Paradigm pals teamed up with the Push Love Productions folks (including a future familiar face) for a "Come Out with Pride" event at Lake Eola Park. They performed both before and after the parade.
.
The next week the SoJam A Cappella Festival released a promo video for their upcoming event featuring VoicePlay.
instagram
.
Over the weekend, J.None performed at a "night of spoken word and comedy" for the Pipol Angels Foundation, which provides funding for arts and education both locally and overseas. (Previous projects had provided new backpacks and school uniforms to students in the Orlando area, and helped a school in Trinidad build an additional classroom for its growing student population.)
instagram

.
Ready for their close-ups
A few days after that, VoicePlay convened at a local studio to film their laid back video for "Thinkin Bout You".
When you show up for book club, but a slow jam breaks out.
.
As the end of the month approached, Layne and Tony gathered a cadre of lovely ladies for the first episode of their new Princess Academy series.
.
Sing for me!
The first weekend of November took VoicePlay to North Carolina for the SoJam A Cappella Festival. The attendees consisted of high school and collegiate groups, including two young groups from Winter Park, and three groups from the University of Central Florida (Layne and Eli's alma mater) who swept the top spots in the competition portion.
The guys spent Saturday afternoon leading a workshop on the business of singing for a living, and a masterclass for some of the competitors. Then they headlined the evening concert, with local openers Transit Vocal Band.
In addition to performing and doing educational outreach, VoicePlay also got to see some old friends. Alfredo Austin from The Exchange was doing coaching sessions. Max Herskovitz, who had subbed for Layne several times, was leading workshops for the kids. Singer and sound engineer Tony Huerta was running the show in his role as CASA president.
.
When they got back home, the boys headed to the studio for their next music video, a dramatic medley of Queen songs.
Then they spent a couple weeks finishing off projects in progress, working on upcoming ones, and polishing their setlist for their Warm Up holiday tour.
.
Holiday ro-o-o-o-oad
Since the Disney World residency for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party had passed to their pals in The Edge Effect, VoicePlay was free to embark on a slightly more relaxed holiday tour for the final month of the year. They traded a location close to home and four sets per night for just nine longer shows at a variety of venues across the country.
The first leg of their travels was a jaunt out west to Alto, New Mexico (via El Paso, Texas). As the name of the town suggests, it's quite high in the mountains, which can present a challenge when your job involves moving lots of air in and out of your lungs. Earl noted on Twitter that "7200ft above sea level was a real thing!"
.
When they got home, they continued the holiday spirit by filming their video for "This Christmas". It was the last remaining track on the "Warm Up" EP to get the visual treatment.
.
The next weekend the tour continued with a loop through the Midwest. The boys started in Findlay, Ohio, scooted up to Traverse City, Michigan, then hopped over to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
.
Back at home, they got into a bit of a pickle for a festive Mission Impossible tie-in video. (Luckily, they didn't get blown up this time.)
.
The following week's tour dates were slightly more spread out. Saturday took the guys to Kilmarnock, Virginia. The next day, they scooted down to Newnan, Georgia, where they got to see their artist pal Leon King, who had drawn their adorable avatars for the pre-show spiel.
instagram
meet and greet in Newnan, GA â photos by Dawn Ortiz
Then they took a leisurely drive up to Waleska, Georgia before heading home. (Eli made some similarly hatted friends on the flight.)
.
Once they were back in Florida, they headed over to Kissimmee for a show at the Gaylord Palms resort. Because they were so close to home, some of their families came along.
.
They capped off their travels with a quick trip to a suburb of Chicago.
.
And to all a good night
Once they were finished spreading holiday cheer to others, the guys took some time at home with their own loved ones.
Then Earl got a head start on his New Year's resolutions by hitting the gym for a leg day workout.
.
