A shot, in which we see Yuuri running, viewed from the front. In the ekonte, we read "Yuuri notices". To show that on the screen, on the pink sheet of paper, the Director wrote "His eyes should be wide open, because of the anticipation he's feeling, please". Yuuri's facial expression changes in the moment, he sees Victor and Yuri. In addition, we have "looks like his hair got a little bit longer" to show the passage of time, as well as other detailed instructions concerning how the character should be depicted. It's a scene that takes place after the Grand Prix Final that we saw in episode 12. What has happened to Yuuri after that? What kind of future will they show to us? It would be absolutely wonderful, if you could see how Yuuri continues to mature as a figure skater, when you look at him from the front. Also, his shoulders look strong and the clothes that he wears are a bit oversize, so it's seems that Yuuri is training to give his body a better shape?

Hello everyone, I wanted to talk a bit about the thinking that went into my latest scene. I used to do similar things on tumblr, but twitter word limit has always made it quite complicated. Sorry for the very long, hyper specific posting, but here's some thoughts.
First I want to talk about Michibata-sans ekonte, it is no secret that I am very fond of working with Michibata san, i think she is someone who is genuinely good at everything, both action and acting. For this specific scene, Michibata san told me "The only limit is: "zorro cannot fight back" the idea in this fight is that it is the battle between a very skilled and experienced fighter and a kid with knives. In real life you might have already heard that no matter how good at fighting you are, if someone brings a knife to a fight you run. What immediately interested me in michibata sans konte is this very real fear that no matter how strong zorro is, at any moment a single mistake can be dangerous, despite the strength gap, it creates tension in the fight.
Another interesting thing in michibata san's ekonte was the emphasis on the eyes of the characters, there were a lot of eyes cut, i felt it was a good opportunity to show how they perceive the fight and what is happening, especially for zorro who has to be very attentive to be able to dodge everything, while protecting kaku.
From there, it was my job to add choreography, think about how they should be fighting, and what their style should look like, Michibata-san trusted me, gave me a lot of freedom, and listened to all the requests i had until the end, i can't thank her enough for her trust.
On this subject, I am now going to talk a bit about Zorro's fighting style here. As you might have heard, zorro is a sword fighter, he uses the three sword style. But here, as he not only cant use his swords but also has to hold kaku his capabilities are very limited. What we know about his swordless style is that he uses a few claw moves, can do grappling moves . Ultimately what is interesting here is that zorro has always been someone who'd rather deflect than dodge. Here is one of the instances where he can't
Hence the challenge of thinking about how he would be fighting. Interestingly zorro is both an aerial and a ground fighter, he jumps a lot and has a tendency of blocking until he can land a named attack, you rarely see him go for attrition war, points, or win by bleed out.
In this situation zorro has way more experience than S hawk who is at this point literally a newborn, so i really wanted to go for this honed through experience kind of style where zorro would try controlling the space and distance with his opponent. Although stronger, zorro is very aware of the danger hawks' abilities pose, so zorro would try to create distance, control the sharp parts of hawks, by either blocking or grabbing in the non threatening parts of his body. Something I saw happening very early on is him trying to get rid of kaku by throwing him in the air at a moment where he would see an opportunity to create distance. Zorro also has experience fighting with a huge hindrance in his arms, so there already was references of him moving while using someone else as an object.
Regarding the fighting style of the seraphim, coming up with the way S hawk would fight after the lineage factor kicks in (it's not important info to register but you can see the seraphim eye pattern turn into mihawk's at the start) was the real challenge of the sequence. Usually seraphim's styles seems to be reminiscent of the warlord they're based after, but in the case of s hawk, i'd wager his hand to hand style would be either daz bones adjacent, or cipher pol adjacent as they are the people he probably spent more time around. Cipher pol style of fighting, in the way it has been depicted in the manga, is very similar to the training in martial arts of monks and shaolin trained martial artists. So the way I saw his barehanded fighting style at this point in the story was this very pretty form
which, because of his current lack of experience would lead to a lot of unnecessary movements and telegraphed attacks. Attacks that an experienced fighter like zoro would be able to react to. To him it would probably feel like seeing after images. So far in the story the seraphim have been shown as overpowering anyone they faced, they had yet to encounter an opponent that would make them go "uh why is none of my attacks landing against that mf" although strong they haven't been shown in a very battle smart way so far. When a fighter is not very experienced or have practiced only one martial art their core martial art is very obvious, i liked that for hawks as it reinforce the idea of him being less experienced as opposed to zorros who would look more brawlish mixed ish and harder to read.
Most of the inspiration from Hawk's movement comes from the eagle claw style of northern style kung fu. Lately in animation you see a lot of southern kung fu inspired movement which is great, but i personally am slightly more fond of northern styles. In general I'd like to see different martial arts like taekwondo muay thai, BJJ, we also have some possibilities for boxing in upcoming episodes. On the subject of style, S-hawk's ability to transform his limbs made the choice of using a style with both legs and arm obvious.
Now that it's all said and done, ultimately this fight's narrative importance is much more tame compared to let's say zoro vs king for example, so even though i did my best with the animation i had to make sure it did not feel like zoro's ultimate fight. We will see what we can do once there's a big narrative fight coming, my two next appearances will be very very small, akin to 1101's, but after that, if i have similar freedom as here, i have hope for the next big fight, finger crossed.

Day 24: Orsimer
For the final day of the Orsimer section, I was indecisive on what or who to draw. Then, after a friendly and inspiring conversation with an acquaintance of mine, I had inspiration. Information about this character is below the cut, and there is... a lot of story to read.
This is Ekont.
He is an Orsimer that was given to Honorhall Orphanage in Riften when he was a baby. He expectedly was not treated well, and only survived by spending most of his time hiding. When he was still a toddler, he was adopted by Ghorza gra-Bagol and moved to Markarth.
He was raised in Markarth for most of his life, and though Ghorza tried to train him in blacksmithing, he never quite picked it up. He was shy through childhood and most of his adolescence, preferring watching his adoptive mother work over playing with other children.
Once Ekont was old enough (read: brave enough) to explore Markarth alone, he often found himself in The Hag's Cure reading or watching the women practice alchemy. A few times a month he was even permitted to visit Calcelmo— who would eventually inspire him to become a mage.
He left his home in Markarth after the Thalmor were stationed within the city permanently. He wanted to explore the province he'd read so much about. Ekont kept to himself, helping travelers and anyone who needed it when he could, and he never hired mercenaries or invited potential companions to join him in his travels.
Eventually, he met Farengar, who asked many questions about his experience in Nordic ruins and specifically about the Dragon Cult. Ekont and Farengar became quick friends and would talk for hours about information the Orsimer provided and the theories that the court mage concocted.
Ekont continued to hone his magickal abilities, finding his strenths in Destruction and Illusion spells. As for his other skills... He wasn't very stealthy, about average, and knew how to fight with a war axe if necessary. His main focus, however, would always be magick.
After retrieving the Dragonstone for Farengar, Ekont met and slayed his first dragon. The revelation of being Dovahkiin was incredibly shocking to him, as he didn't think a Nordic prophecy could apply to himself. The boy was instructed to climb the Throat of the World to High Hrothgar but he chose not to. This ‘destiny’ thing was something he felt he needed to process before doing anything drastic.
Ekont's travels led him north, to Winterhold— specifically the College of Winterhold. He felt immediately at home within the college, finding companionship for the first time with his classmates. He learned quickly, though not without incident, and found his closest friends in Onmund and J'zargo.
When he and Tolfdir breached the heart of Saarthal, where the Eye of Magnus was held, he was awestruck by the floating artifact. Ekont was reportedly so distracted and hypnotized by the Eye that he had to be physically torn from the room in order to regain awareness. After their resident Thalmor decides that the Eye was his own, Ekont is sent into Labyrinthian— Bromjunaar— to retrieve the fabled Staff of Magnus.
The fight against Morokei was a desperate one, and after two days of fighting through Dragur crypts, Ekont wasn't exactly ready for that fight. By the skin of his teeth he survived long enough to kill Morokei and claim the Staff. Looking at a pile of ashes he saw a mask, shiny and humming with powerful enchantments that didn't feel as though they'd weakened with age. He took the mask for his own, and often kept it attached to his armor or worn on his face.
He later left the college after Tolfdir became Archmage, because he was encouraged (read: forced by his professors) to go to High Hrothgar. He met with the Graybeards and began learning more about what being Dragonborn meant. As time went on and he completed the Graybeards' trials, he felt himself becoming more and more attached to the Morokei mask. He needed it around at all times, and would wear it more and more often outside of battles.
Meeting Delphine was unpleasant for him as it is for most people, but seeing Alduin seemed to change something in him. Something awakened, and that's where everything began going downhill.
Through the next few months there were short moments of time where he felt like he was floating, out of control, unable to see, and when he'd return he found that minutes— hours— had passed with no recollection of that time. These gaps in memory increased in frequency and length as he began hearing whispers of power and magick. His skin slowly took on a blue-ish tint and he wore his mask almost 24/7. Ekont found cruel actions easier to make and he was becoming more intense as a person, as his thoughts were being more and more influenced by... something.
Unbeknownst to him, ‘killing’ Morokei only sealed the Priest's soul inside of the mask, making it cursed. Wearing it and using the Staff of Magnus repeatedly led to Morokei gaining a stronger and stronger hold over Ekont's body, mind, and eventually soul.
A year after he first donned the Morokei mask, Ekont was fully posessed the first time. He had been exploring a Nordic ruin at the time, but when he woke up, Dragur were kneeling before him, completely still as though in prayer.
Months passed and he still couldn't understand why these things were happening to him. At first, he suspected his mask and staff, but his thoughts were shifted away anytime he considered the idea. Returning to the college to research this problem didn't help, but his professors and friends noticed the differences in his speech and behavior. They tried to pin down what was doing this to him, but he refused to let them inspect his mask, his staff, or even his state of health. Ekont's magickal abilities had increased tenfold since he'd first left the College, and he'd picked up 5 more full Shouts.
Two years after he first donned the Morokei mask, two years after he was revealed as Dragonborn, and Ekont no longer has control over his own body or his own thoughts. He is permitted glimpses of the events happening around his body, but no ability to influence them.
Alduin still flies Skyrim's skies, and the Dragonborn isn't delaying the return of the dragons. Morokei has control, now.

Yuri!!! on ICE MAPPA Select book, Making of the animation
Part 1.
We'll introduce you to the process of creating Yuri!!! on ICE sakuga. We are going to look mainly at the last scene of episode 12., the raw materials, such as ekonte [director's storyboards] and corrections, that were the base for genga, and their intended meaning. The ekonte and directions that we have shown here are by Yamamoto Sayo and Hiramatsu Tadashi was the animation supervisor.

The scene at the end of episode 12., Yuuri is running. He came to St. Petersburg, and is running towards Victor and Yuri, who are waiting for him. If you take a look at the ekonte, it says "He wants to reunite with Victor and Yuri quickly, and you can see that looking at him". This desire is portrayed by making Yuuri run with his upper body bend forward. Based on the ekonte, the animator draws a layout, and the directions concerning the layout are written on the pink sheet of paper. There's a memo there saying: "Make his outerwear a bit loose" and you can see that the lines were corrected accordingly. Based on these directions, the animation supervisor is introducing changes to the layout. Also in this scene, Yuuri is running on a bridge, and that links this scene to the scene in episode 2. See the bottom of the next page for details [it will be translated later].
