pt 7 Princesses, Dragons and Elves oh my!
Gill was content to let the two chatter while he focused on his work, feeling overstimulated just being around them. Tomorrow he was for certain going to explore the land for as much of the day as he could. Leave something for Lana to get her through the day on her own, but just have quality alone time with himself.
And he was going to, right up until he asked for his sword back in case of trouble. Lana was still sleeping and he and Glen were at the edge of the entrance talking.
“Mm…” Glen mulled it over, “I’ve first got a question for you that’s been bugging me.”
Resisting the urge to sigh, Gill looked up, “Must you?”
This felt eerily familiar to when he was abruptly picked up against his will. What now?
“I won’t be angry,” Glen assured him, only confusing the elf, “I like you. But see. Ever since you stipulated that you’re afraid of flying, but not heights, I’ve been wondering ‘How did he fly? With what creature? Did he ever actually fly before?’”
“Please don’t.” Gill interjected weakly. Here it came.
“So,” Glen looked down, “What did you ride? Or were supposed to ride?”
Gill momentarily searched for some unfathomable way to avoid the question, change the subject. He looked out at the pool of water, the early dawn sky. But if Glen “won’t be angry,” he pretty clearly already knew the answer.
With a sigh, Gill looked up, “Dragons.”
The dragon now before him nodded sagely, “Ah, yes. You are a very strange, unusual individual, Gillian.” he stated, “Seems a lot of your misfortune lies with us.”
Gill inhaled, held it, then exhaled, “I’ve met a couple I had positive interactions with. Or as positive as could be expected” he replied, “But so far my troubles started with being born into the wrong tribe. And so far they end with you and this whole situation.” he scratched his head and moved outside into the light, “Eklar tribe, Northern faction.”
“Hn, not as bad as the others.” Glen mused.
Gill paused and looked back, “What do you mean?”
Glen shrugged, “From what I’ve heard down the line they’re the more regimental ones. Actually fierce to contend with. Unlike the others with those sorry embarrassments to dragon-kind who can barely fly. Still, all embarrassments to submit themselves to living with elves and allowing them to ride them like horses.” he snorted, smoke bursting out and rising into the air, “Runty little things.”
His voice was filled with disgust. Gill smelled the acrid scent after a few seconds. He wasn’t sure how to respond really, “I don’t care for-” he started to agree when the dragon continued over him.
“I ought to kill you,” Glenn added on to what he was saying in a very matter-of-fact tone, “For being part of that disgrace. ‘Taming’ dragons. Daring to bring them down to your level.”
That put Gill on edge. It wouldn’t surprise him if Glen flipped like a switch and smashed him or ate him in a moment of dragon whim. He realized his completely vulnerable state, and he tensed for some kind of action. Of course Glen wouldn’t give him his sword back. Not after knowing such a thing, and the animosity between the Wild Dragons and the Riders.
“It’s the principle of the thing, you understand.” Glen stated more than asked, head lowering closer. He sounded as if he had made up his mind on the matter. He wasn’t angry, yes, but what did that even mean? He was simply doing what was logical to him.
“The principle.” Gill echoed weakly, feeling the adrenaline building as he readied to move, do whatever it took to survive even for a few seconds.
“But what do you think, Gill?” the dragon asked in a somewhat condescending and musing tone of voice.
Gill’s eyes darted from the dragon’s maw to his claws, trying to anticipate which would come for him first.
“Well, that presents something of a story to get to my opinion on the matter.” he replied tensely, “But I generally agree with you that dragon riders seem rather against the natural order of things, and being a man of the land, I like the natural order, harsh as it can be. I didn’t think much one way or the other as a youth, only that my phobia of flying couldn’t be forced out of me by tying me to… ‘my’ dragon’s back.” he used the phrase with bitter sarcasm.
Where was “his” dragon now? Surely stopped searching decades ago?
“But after I left to strike out on my own, I came in contact with what I could only call “authentic” dragons. The truly large, and dangerous. And I found beauty in those dangerous, ruthless beings, if that makes sense. ‘Bonding’ with a dragon seemed very ridiculous after that.”
Glen’s expression turned thoughtful and his eyes rolled to one side, “A bit like your arranged marriages you hate so much?”
Gill slid a step to one side, “Yes, a bit, or well. A lot. I never wanted to fly but right before coming of age I had to go through the whole “bonding” procedure and frankly neither she nor I liked each other and were very poorly suited.” he took another step, “Personally I think my parents chose my partner specifically to bully me out of my fear or something along those lines. She was terrible to me.
“Still,” he added, “My time with my tribe accustomed me to such beings, hence I’m perhaps too bold in doing things like conversing with wild dragons when it’s more natural to clash and not… I’d hate to say ‘try to make friends,’” he felt foolish even as he said it. It was basically what he hoped to achieve any time he had to deal with dragons, “But just try to mediate things in the best way possible so there doesn’t have to be a fight if it’s a viable alternative. Understand me?”
Glen chuckled, and it wasn’t a kind one as he returned his gaze to the elf. But he seemed to ponder something, “I was right. For all your talk of being one with nature and loving the natural order… You’re not very natural. You’re both wise and foolish concerning us proper dragons.”
He shook his head and drew it away. Gill didn’t dare relax.
“Well,” Gill hadn’t any real response he could think of to help his situation, “Certainly my fear of flying is… an embarrassment to the tribe. It’s not normal…”
“And I know your fear.” Glen snickered, “Oh it’s too wonderful. Although I am still sorry about causing that thing that happened to you. But it is terribly funny. A dragon rider afraid of flying. Tragic really.”
“Yes let’s have a laugh at my expense,” Gill snapped irritably, losing his temper despite his fear, “You can’t begin to understand the torture I went through. Ha ha it’s hilarious!”
“No, I can’t,” Glen was clearly enjoying this. His change of attitude was maddening, taunting the elf who couldn’t do anything about it.
“Is there a point to this conversation?” Gill asked curtly, annoyance coloring over his fear, "I'd really like to deal with whether I can have my sword and then go be alone away from you two.” Especially you! He thought with visceral.
Glen grinned nastily down, “The point is you should be grateful I don’t-- how did you put it?- ‘Pancake’ you right here and now.” he replied, “You should be so grateful, in fact, that you happily do whatever I want and drop this whole “Lana must go home” nonsense.”
Gill absorbed that information, then sighed, “So that’s the way, is it?” a rhetorical question, “No reasoning with you. Not even about how you’re going to be beset by more people coming after you? You wouldn’t rather the peace and quiet? You’d still have me. I’m not a good enough exchange?”
Glen nodded, “Not so much you’re not good enough. You’re so good, in fact, so funny, and cute, that you and Lana are gonna both stay with me. That’s how it’s going to be.”
As Gill’s demeanor transformed into outrage and frustration the dragon chuckled all the more.
“Just look at that face.” he grinned, “You have the best expressions. You’re great! You’re special like Lana. I ought to collect more of you!”
Horrified at the thought of Glen collecting people like some kind of trophies, Gill sputtered, “Y-you can’t do that! People aren’t like gems or gold, Glen!”
“Sure they are. They’re just extra rare,” Glen countered with his irrational logic, “Most people I want to kill, and they want to kill me! But you and Lana are special! Don’t you see?”
“No I don’t see!” Gill snapped, throwing up his hands and walking away, no longer afraid of death, “Glen you can’t collect living people!”
“Are you going to stop me?” Glen had such a “needs a punch in the face” kind of tone it absolutely infuriated the elf. But Gill paused as the thought crossed his mind. When he didn’t immediately reply Glen stated, “You won’t be able to. What would you do?”
“Hnnnnnnng,” Gill groaned, “Not talk to you for starters! See how you like that!”
That took Glen off guard and he was now the one sputtering, “Now-now that’s not fair!” he complained, his head dropping closer to Gill as the elf began walking again.
“Fair?!” Gill scoffed, spinning around, pointing at him, “Look who’s talking! Making threats against a guy a tenth his size who doesn’t even have a means of defense!”
“That’s perfectly fair! I don’t trust you! It’s the fair thing to do!” Glen defended his reasoning.
“I don’t trust you either!?” Gill shouted at nearly the top of his lungs. Even as he did, a part of him realized this was a completely childish argument the two were having and he was no longer being the rational elf he usually was.
“Well-! Well-!” The dragon looked around for a means of argument. Something he could snip back. “That’s beside the point! Whether you trust me or not, you’re not leaving my territory!”
Again, knowing he was acting like a petulant child, Gill challenged, “Or what?!”
For the first time Gill heard a roar from the dragon. Not a full throated one but it was enough to take him by surprise and cause him to clap his hands over his ears with a, “Gah!” as he closed his eyes.
Next thing he knew claws were around him and he was rising.
Despite himself Gill began to panic. He forgot his anger. He was only left with paralyzing fear that to get back at him, teach him his place, Glen was going to take off.

Kutaisi Residential House, Georgia
The Kutaisi Residential House project site is located in a historical district in Kutaisi, on a left bank of river Rioni. One of the main characteristics of this part of the city is its cultural diversity. On every stage of the history different architectural pieces are relevant and modern to its present time and have very well arranged, distinctive architectural language.
In this district main architectural accent is on the cultural, administrative or religious buildings, residential architecture is on a background, finished with local sand-color eklar stone, but it still has its authentic qualities.
Architectural intervention in this kind of environment needs special approach. Main task, during working on the project development was that – new residential building shouldn’t dominate on the cultural architecture, spatially it should merge inherently with the surrounding and at the same time should confront modern architectural paradigm and standards.
On the south-west of the building site, on the crossroad of Gaponovi and Niuporti Streets there is a Park. During working on a Masterplan main goal was to place the building in a way that it doesn’t “invade” park territory. For this reason only ground storey of the building in coming close to the park edge, other three stories are shifted farther so that whole volume of the building doesn’t dominate on the park space.
From the main gazing point, building has a round form (on a crossroad of Gaponovi and Niuporti streets), we thought this kind of spatial solution is genuine from the city planning (and spatial-geometric) point of view, because during the centuries crossing part of these two streets has shaped a round geometry. On Gaponovi street, alongside of a south-eastern façade of the site, there are many trees, some of them are evergreens.
This green barrier works as a smooth integrator for the building to its surrounding. Because of this green barrier and also, because of the flat landscape from the pedestrian gazing point, main focus on the building comes to the ground-storey, that’s why we decided to put a main architectural accent on that part of the building. This characteristic element is round stone columns (diameter 1.10m). for the main finishing material for a facade we chose the same sandy Eklar stone, which is dominant in the local architectural palette. Despite the material of the finish, facade doesn’t repeat classical architectural details, that most building around have.
Hopefully this kind of approach will enrich authentic cultural and historical multilayered characteristics and will be a solid attempt to develop modern Georgian architectural language.

The vow Con swore to join the Guardians was much different than his Jedi Knight vows.
The ceremony did not take place in the temple sanctuary, but in the shadowy training room used by the Guardian order. Master Jerikho was not there to support him; nor was Grandmaster Bachi or any of the council. His friends were not there to cheer for him. There was only the Guardians: the Cerean Ptolema Vashti, expressionless as ever; the Toydarian Odis Aileen, his perpetual grin masking a hidden brutality; the human Min Eklar, cunning as a Vulptex; and the Dug August Mugaba, High Justicar of the Guardian order. Mugaba's cold eyes flashed in the dim as he nodded at Con to proceed.
Con did not kneel for this vow. These were not the sacred vows of the ancient Jedi order, there was no reverence, no politesse here. The Guardians did not romanticize what they were.
“There are no tales told or ballads written for us, no dirges sung when we die,” August Mugaba had told him, in the early days after his rise to knighthood.
