Thursday Releases for September 12

Friday is usually the busiest day of the week for new releases. Not this week though. For some reason there a bunch of releases on a Thursday. Whatever. Thursday Releases for September 12 include Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, Caravan SandWitch, The Old Man S2, and more.

The Old Man S2

The second season of The Old Man, the TV series from Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, is out today.

In FX’s The Old Man Season 2, former CIA agent “Dan Chase” (Jeff Bridges) and former FBI Assistant Director “Harold Harper” (John Lithgow) set off to recover “Emily Chase” (Alia Shawkat) after she is kidnapped. In the sci-fi drama Beforeigners from HBO Nordic, Oslo is overrun with immigrants and refugees. But they haven’t come from other countries. They’re from the past. In fact, they’re from three specific eras: the Stone Age, the Viking age, and the Victorian age. No one knows why or how they came, but police detectives Lars Haaland and his partner Alfhildr Enginsdottir – who is a former Viking herself – are uncovering mysteries and conspiracies that might lead to the truth. The show was created by Eilif Skodvin and Anne Bjørnstad, and I was very happy that I got to talk with Anne about how they created the show, and why time travel turns out to be a great metaphor to explore issues of immigration and national identity.

We can debate under which grouping of the speculative fiction umbrella this series belongs, but there shouldn’t be a doubt that it is solid spec fic in the best sense of the term. Beforeigners takes the time-travel premise and turns it into an entertaining social metaphor of our times. It’s all a bit offbeat, but it takes itself seriously as a police procedural, without ever getting too earnest. But what would you expect from the co-creators of Lilyhammer (Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin)?

Admittedly, there is a bit of rationalization you’ll need to do in order to buy some of the premises. Specifically, whether Stone Age people could adapt and learn modern languages and social/business structures, but the show allows for a several year learning ramp after the set-up. And the big mystery, though not completely explained in this first series, is definitely more complex than it seems at the top.

The policing duo at the heart of the story is Nicolai Cleve Broch (Ragnarok) and Krista Kosonen (Blade Runner 2049). Each has their own personal tales running in parallel and with inevitable clashes into their professional lives. And neither path is entirely easy or straight-forward in its direction. But both performances are nuanced and fun to watch. Kosonen especially.

There are some other nice supporting characters, like Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir’s (Justice League) and Ingunn Beate Øyen, each of who impact Kosonen in different ways.

Ultimately, there is a lot of set up without a huge amount of resolution in the 6 episodes. However, it feels satisfying and promises a huge meal into the second series (in production now). So if you’re looking for something new and different, this may be the series for you.

Las nuevas series no se hacen esperar y el mismo día 1 de agosto tenemos LAMBS OF GOD una miniserie sobre tres monjas, cada una de una reproducción distinta, que viven en una isla aislada basada en la novelística australiana de Marele Day.

El 3 de agosto es turno para la temporada 1 de A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW, nueva serie de comedia de sketches de la cómica / actriz / escritora Robin Thede, con un equipo de mujeres negras e invitados famosos.

El 5 de agosto tenemos otra nueva serie con la temporada 1 de PICO DA NEBLINA, la historia de Biriba, un pipiolo traficante de São Paulo que decide dejar ayer una vida delictiva y utilizar su conocimiento para entregar legalmente el producto, adjunto con su socio e inversor sin experiencia. Ese mismo día llega la temporada 4 de PREACHER.

Ya el 12 de agosto tendremos la temporada 2 de SUCCESSION que comienza calibrado en el punto dramático donde la primera temporada terminó. El día 13 es para la miniserie OUR BOYS sobre tres adolescentes judíos son secuestrados y asesinados por militantes de Hamas.

Avanzamos hasta el 19 de agosto con LOS GEMSTONE. Temporada 1, la nueva comedia de Danny McBride comercio sobre una género televangelista de auge mundial con una larga tradición de desvío del camino correcto, afán y trabajo caritativo.

A finales de mes tendremos más estrenos. El 20 de agosto para LIGERA COMO UNA PLUMA. Temporada 2 (Parte 1) y el 21 de agosto para BEFOREIGNERS (LOS VISITANTES). Temporada 1, un drama de producción noruega en seis partes de los creadores de Lilyhammer, Anne Bjørnstad y Eilif Skodvin.
