This is kinda out of pocket for me but I have thoughts and want to share.

So the Mufasa movie annoys me. I'm going to attempt to explain why to some degree of sense.

It feels like the writers/directors wanted to do their own thing and make a cool coming off age/found family movie with a lion whilst also using the safety net of preestablished characters and a franchise. And just why??

I think if this was a standalone movie just made as is with its own characters, it would be a fantastic movie. It's kinda jungle booky, it mostly calls to mind the movie Two Brothers (2004), which is a great movie about 2 tiger cubs taken from the wild who find each other and return home, it's live action it's great. I think it could stand up next to movies like A Dog's Way Home, Eight Below, War Horse. These realistic styled animal led stories regardless whether they're based in truth or not. I think it would have been a really good movie like this.

And personally I quite like the live action CGI, I think it looks good, they definitely did it better with this movie than the last one. I think it is a fantastic alternative to using real animals whilst being different from animation which is its own category in itself. (This being said, if your movie needs a dog just use a fucking dog stop putting men in green suits to play a dog!)

It feels like it's only a Lion King movie to have the safety net of preestablished fans and character to guarantee some monetary success rather than taking the risk at something new and standalone. But then they just cut a bunch of holes in the safety net by disregarding the already built up lore and characterisation, it doesn't make sense in the world of Lion King, the characters don't match their future counterparts that have already been laid down and accepted by fans. It's not a Lion King movie, it just pretends to be.

And I'm so disappointed in how good a movie it could have been if it had been its own thing without the need of a franchise.

Eight Below (2006)

Not as good as my childhood nostalgia would have led me to believe, but the dogs themselves were wonderful. What great actors!!!! I hope they all got so many treats.

A new chapter of ‘Transdimensional Arc!! Alcor Finds a Ford’ (by @random-dragons-interest-hoarde) came out recently, and I just had to draw the delphinidae dimension residents!

The orca (named Graham) was described as having lots of scars, but I don’t actually know how or where his humanoid self got them, so I just gave him rake marks. (Rake marks are just a fancy name for the scars orcas get from each other)

I Drew some Dolphin!Alcor as well, even though he probably doesn’t exist in this dimension, because I love him and we got his canonical dolphin species confirmed by Stan (who’s name I changed a bit to be more dolphin-y)

Closeups and notes below

I tried to replicate Graham’s wing(?) pattern things on his fins, and his horns(?) on his eye markings, but I’m not so sure how well it turned out. I also tried to replicate Liam’s tattoos from ‘Once Again, Again’ (by @vallis-cineris---wanderer) because I have many theories of how he exists in that world (this will be a separate post once I get my thoughts together). Funnily enough, this is the first fanart of Liam I’ve ever made.

Also some closeups of Fiddleford McBucket, because despite saying I wouldn’t draw him, I did and love how it turned out!

Quick tangent but I’d like to give a thank you/shoutout to Dragon’s Hoard for writing dolphins in a positive light. Recently, dolphins have been getting a terrible rep, and it’s gotten old. There’s duality in anything intelligent, and dolphins s are some of the most intelligent creatures around. Even then, they’re just animals acting on instinct, and we shouldn’t hold them to the same standards we hold humans to.

leave the engine room. i. you're speaking to tumblr user (and twitter and geniuslyrics and twitch.tv and--) pliablehead, and this song is so stupidly important to my whole. T h i n g, and jon's vocal on it, specifically the original vanilla man alive album version, is 99% why. if I'm ever not deeply and cripplingly obsessed with the stupid artful nuance and deliberate decisions he makes flipping back and forth between chest voice and head voice/falsetto on this track then you will know it is because I have been taken over by body snatchers. (he doesn't quiiitte do it like this anymore though because he's a Different Performer Now and i respect that things have changed and i'm alo--) but like any and every version that exists he sings "walking hope" slightly differently and every single time it makes me want to SCREAM

good shot good soldier!!!!!!!!!!! here's a certified Pli Hot Take is that I think AFD is the album on which his vocals sound the most beautiful and exquisite as a whole. idk what was cooking in the studio but just every track hits so good, and good shot....... the bit where the music drops out and it's Just Him Singing and he's just SOARING up there.... put me in the ground . i have a video of him doing this Live In Front Of My Face and I still get chills watching it aaaaaaAAAAA

on that note: i'm also going to pick Desire. I think, of his Big Loud Yelling Songs, in his classic jonathan milieu of "i'm going to sing as high and loud as i possibly can because I think it sounds fucking cool," that Desire like,, exemplifies the successful execution of that as a concept. and he sounds so fucking good and I love the shit out of it. and obviously it's not sustainable at length live, and i definitely never saw him do it live as well as he hits it on the album in the 3 afd tour shows i caught, but man. can I tELL YOU THAT I'M EEEMMMPTTYYYYY

what C said about software greatman is genuinely how I Also Feel about software greatman it's just such a fucking good tune and all the choices he's making are so good and it does feel like a bit disingenuous because a lot of what Makes It is the production side but it's also. fucking good. as much as I think AFD wins best overall there are some CHOICE little moments scattered all across RDF that are stellar on their ownnnn and if jennifer on the album hit half as hard as jennifer live does it would be appearing on this list as well for sure

i have sooooaur many more that i could pick....,oughhh i'm so vocalist-pilled.....,,, ok can I give 5th place to a tie between your money my summer (Current Jon Vocal Decisions Era and it's soooo fucking stupid and sexy good live i encourage you to find legit any live version he does some truly heinous things) and the No.6 orchestral version of The Mariana because there is literally nothing so fucking satisfying as Jonathan Higgs reaching out for an extraordinary high note and just absolutely sticking the landing as if it's nothing. my dude. never imply that you're not actually a good singer ever again or I'll kill you <3

The Beast Below & Kill The Moon as Foils

The interesting thing to me about The Beast Below and Kill the Moon as episodes is that they operate on a very similar concept: there is a living (very BIG) thing that functions as the only thing that keeps large swathes of humanity safe/alive and they both end with a bit of a cop-out where that Thing stays right where it is but how the themes of those episodes are WILDLY different based on how the Doctor&Companiok interactions play out.

The Beast Below is an exploration of how the Doctor does what is necessary, what he thinks is right and kindest to the most number of people, but that sometimes he is wrong, incredibly wrong, and that it is very essential for him to listen to his companions, to give them a choice, and also that at the end of the day, the Doctor is the Star Whale, he is lonely and pained and kind, that this is the ethos of the show: the Doctor is kind but he really needs to be stopped and reminded of it sometimes (really great parallels with the end of the Runaway Bride/Fires of Pompeii, in a way).

But Kill the Moon is all about how the Doctor is right. How he will always be right. That he knows better than his companions, that he always holds all the cards, that he is cruel to teenage girls and tells them they're not special and knew all along what was going to happen but didn't tell his companion just to see what she would do, but her decision didn't matter at the end of the day, not to him, not to the problem at hand, because the Doctor knows everything and is right and God, disregarding the other major problems with this episode it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth in comparison to the Beast Below. That in this episode, the Doctor is not a god that needs to be reminded of his humanity but a god that is cruel and all-knowing and somehow right in that. I've talked about how the Beast Below embodies the ethos of Doctor Who to me; Kill the Moon, at least in how the Doctor acts, feels like the opposite.

I'll never be over the fact that being batman it GYAHHHH! so when bruce becomes batman and makes his vow to get justice for gotham, to make it so that no one else has to experience the devastation and loss he did the night he lost his parents- being batman means well his job, his mission requires overexposure to death crime and tragedy in order for him to prevent it, and like yeah he never truly ever left crime alley, but that wound is constantly being ripped open. Every person, every ally, every one of HIS KIDS especially that he loses in pursuit of this mission makes the injury new and fresh and red.

this isn't news of course but everytime it hits me that because batman is built on grief he's destined to do it forever I just ☹️☹️
