Your competition is your procrastination, your ego, the unhealthy food you're consuming, the knowledge you neglect. Crush them all!

Dawn isn't sure what she's expecting or wanting to hear. Part of her wasn't even sure why she let all of it out to Volkner. Maybe it was because she just trusted him, or because she felt some kind of kinship or camaraderie with him. Either way, as the Leader spoke, Dawn simply listened.

Some of her suspicions were confirmed. She did know that if anything was wrong, Volkner wouldn't have stayed quiet about it. Likely some of the other leaders would have been vocal too.

"I'll always have your back and everyone else's." Dawn states. "I know how the admins nitpick everything you all do. It really isn't fair, and I wouldn't want them to take away any of your positions. You guys are all... more than colleagues to me. You're like my family." And it was something Dawn didn't say lightly either.

They were the ones to offer her guidance and support. They encouraged her when she lost against them, and gave her advice she took to heart. They visited her in the hospital after the Distortion World when her own mother was nowhere to be seen. Even while learning the ins and outs of being Sinnoh's Champion with Cynthia, they were so incredibly patient and understanding towards her. It was only right to give back all of that support and kindness they'd shown her throughout her teenage years.

And, after being touted for so many years as someone 'uncaring' and 'unfeeling'... as Sinnoh's 'Ice Queen', hearing someone else acknowledge that she really did care was better than a breath of fresh air. Dawn simply expressed and showed her care differently from other people.

"It means a lot to hear that. I'm glad that care is being recognized by the people it actually matters to - I guess that's what I should be worried more about instead. As long as you and the other Leaders know that, then I shouldn't let outsider's words bug me so much." Which was easier said than done, but having that confirmation helped.

Midnight eyes finally rise to look at Volkner, a serious look to her gaze. "Flint?" She repeats. "I can kick his ass in again, if you want." Dawn wasn't too sure what was going on between them, really, it was never her place to ask. But, she did want to help Volkner out in some way after dumping all of this on him so suddenly. It would be a great way to pay him back. "Emperor's probably itching to go against his Infernape again anyways." She adds, knowing full well that her starter would agree.

"Thanks for listening by the way. Sorry to unleash that on you so suddenly. Now my image as Sinnoh's Stone Cold Champion is ruined-"

Despite his own efforts and struggles and the reputation he had sort of reluctantly built up over the years, Volkner wants to believe he's at least decent enough to people he considers close enough to be friends to some degree. He tries his best to do something, to be there for them in any capacity even when he himself is enough of a mess barely stitched together he can hardly tell left from right in the ever growing disaster that is navigating thoughts and feelings and the distance between him and other people in any way that isn't going to become as self destructive as the rest of his life.

So, when Dawn speaks up, so uncharacteristically quiet and reserved, Volkner just keeps quiet and listens. ( he knows how it's like, after all. to have so many thoughts and whispers in your head it's a walking, living nightmare on its own that you never know how to shut it up to be allowed to breathe. )

And there it is, that nasty string of spiraling thoughts that was eating away at her mind. Volkner sits on it, for now, trying as best as he can to not fuck it up and make everything ten times worse for her. Some empty words meant to be blind reassurance are the last thing she needs to hear, and it's almost painful how much experience is at play here.

"Well. You know me enough by now— I would just say it if something wasn't right. Run my mouth moure than I should, even." Picking fights has always been his specialty, after all, right? "And I'm pretty sure I can speak for Roark too on this." As if Roark was easy to disappoint, he'd be the first to jump in right now and speak up for her, even.

That was the easy part, wasn't it? And now for the rest, trying as best as he could to carefully pick around words and string them together in some sort of way that wouldn't be just sticking his foot in his mouth as he was so painfully apt to do.

"If it helps— at least for me, I think you're doing great. You know how much the admins up there at the League hate my guts, so honestly the fact that I'm still here at all? That's more than anything I expected by now. It's... hard, to find someone having our backs like you do." More so when they are always so ready to get on his case for the slightest inexcusable irregularity at the gym. "I'm glad it was you taking Cynthia's place out of all the people that kept trying over and over. You probably care more than any of those other guys ever would've."

Volkner just really hopes this is doing some amount of good, at least enough to lift a little bit of the burden off her shoulders, to chip away at it and make it a little easier to carry, at least.

And then he tries to speak up again, some sort of effort to lighten the mood and get her to crack a smile.

"If you really want something to do to help some more you could always go kick Flint's ass again for me and get him off my back—" that... is a terrible joke, actually, isn't it? Can't say he didn't try, at least. Somewhat.
