I watched a lot of daytime TV with my brother in the 2000’s, as us latchkey kids were wont to do. I remember the first time I learned about David Reimer thinking it would be so much easier if that had happened to me. Then I wouldn’t have to justifying wanting to be a girl, or go thru any scary surgery, I would just be a girl. Thru no fault of my own. I was already settling into the idea that this is the body I got and that’s that, but wouldn’t it be nice if it was a body I liked?

Of course that was not the case for David Reimer. His story is tragic, and goes to show that gender is more than our bodies. Unfortunately stories like his are still far too common among intersex people, who are still being mutilated and lied to from birth, in order to force them into the gender binary.

Me: I don't think I'm trans; I don't have dysphoria, I just go around every day feeling like the world is right, and I am right, but the combination of the two feels wrong—It's not the overwhelming wrongness that I hear dysphoria described as, mind you, but it feels wrong nonetheless—Like the world is a puzzle, and I am a puzzle piece, but I have been placed in the wrong box. Like there's a misalignment between me and the world. A dissonance almost. A dissonance that makes me feel inexplicably … not unhappy exactly and not quite depressed but lacking a certain joy and enjoyment of the world that seems like it comes easy to everyone else. And every time I try to reach for that happiness and contentment, it's like I'm trying to relax in an uncomfortable environment, like I'm overly aware, and I can't willingly let the world slip from my focus (unless of course I lose myself in some form of media but that's just escapism. Escaping from what, you ask? Why, I haven't the slightest idea.)—But that's not quite the same as how other people describe dysphoria, so it surely can't be dysphoria, and I am surely most definitely not trans.
