The public (my Friend) has spoken. Now you all have to look at the Effie Trinket closet cosplay I put together for @kneelbeforeclefairy last night!!

Why did we do this??? It was raining and what else does one do on a rainy Saturday night?? (Also there's an inside joke with my coworker about an interview with his Hunger Games-sona, a late night tv host named Cicero "Chuckles" Flickerman, but that's a long story. (It's not that long. I interviewed her as Effie cause we commit to the bit. I'll post the interview with Effie if ya want)).

It's literally a dress she's owned since the original movie came out, and old fascinator we've had since those were in, a hairbow on a choker, and a pink ponytail fall I got as a free bonus with another wig that I clipped to the back of her head, brushed forward, and styled into an Effie shape. And of course the Capitol makeup. But what makes her Effie work is the bitchy little facial expressions.

(What did Haymitch just say to elicit that bitchy gaze???)

So yeah.....Closet Cosplay is a dying art but I miss it.

Peering through her lashes, Effie couldn’t feel anything other than amused at Celeste’s antics. Apparently, launching yourself backwards in a dramatic attempt to harvest some pumpkin’s was the blonde girl's idea of fun, and as her senior by three years, she couldn’t find it in herself to tell her that mud was currently splattering her dress. For somebody with a mother so unruly, and a father so…whatever her father could be classed as, after one azkaban visit and years of fighting enemies beforehand, Effie was surprisingly avoidant towards dirt and muck. Besides, despite the comparisons between a fourteen year old and a nine year old, she had half a mind to ask Lewis how on Earth to deal with Celeste. The handshake could stay between the siblings, though. Perhaps it kept them under control.

Yet, sitting away from the children, were two old friends, who although had lived awfully different lives, had spent the day together. Winnie, from her universe into her dear friends, had come back with only her daughter - for her own partner seemed like he’d be too much for poor Sebastian, who was currently with Lewis, carrying him around on his back. Anyway, what was worse than arguing with yourself, only in a universe where you had dealt the time for your felonies?

Either way, the catch-up was nice. 

The pair were never two to get awfully philosophical. In fact, their jokes were almost respite from the traumatic fifth year they’d both experienced, each with very different ends. Winnie’s wrong and disappointing choices, Clora’s struggles with men that couldn’t understand ‘no’, their joint pain and hardships.

“Do you think we did everything right?” Clora’s voice came out almost in a squeak, and it made Winnie glance up from the lovingly-made sandwich she’d been given. The taller girl was quick in her answer.

“Clearly not. I mean, you definitely didn’t.” Win’ teased, nodding her head in the direction of Clora’s husband. 

Clora only huffed, a tiny smile etched upon her face. “Winifred, please, I’m being serious.”

Winifred leaned back at that, a contemplating look on her face. “Do you feel that you need to be?”

That felt like an utterly serious question, so Clora, of course, sat up and frowned at those words. Winnie could distinguish the cogs turning in the blonde’s brains, so she took a moment to glance over at her own daughter. Effie’s hair was dark and coiled like Winnie’s, dark skin colour too, yet with a freckled complexion, and coffee-brown eyes. Remnants of scars from teenage acne danced across her face, and it seemed her eyebrows were permanently in an expression of confusion. She had tied her pinafore dress with a towel from the Three Broomsticks, like some cosplay of her mother.

“It confuses me.” Clora’s reply, so honest in her words, made Winnie immediately turn back to glance at her. Clora was uncommon in admitting confusion, at least Winifred thought so, so she listened intently. “I’m so used to perfecting everything - back in school, I mean. Everything had to be perfect to pass, and for trials.” Her voice felt solemn, reflective. “It’s just strange to me that I haven’t felt that in some time.” 

Winifred didn’t feel the same way. Winnie was lazy to the core, half-assed the keepers trials, and due to her lazy behaviour, got her now-boyfriend a one-way (or so she thought) ticket to Azkaban.

“And the problem is, you don’t know what sort of strange.” Clora continued. “It’s for the better, I know. Yet, there’s some kind of guilt. Maybe it’s because they don’t know the full extent of everything.” Her tone had shifted now. Although she spoke of guilt, her tone seemed reflective, almost curious as to the inner-workings of her young children’s minds.

“Effie’s fourteen - she knows now.” Winnie started in some effort of a thoughtful reply. “Take it from someone with some alternate-universe Sallow child - she shrugged and turned back to playing football.” 

Clora couldn’t help but smile at that, and her smile only widened as she was practically knocked out of her chair by her daughter, launching herself at her mother, giggles flooding the patio space. Lewis dragged his feet as he walked behind, open book in hand, climbing onto the chair, squashed beside his mother. 

Effie stood, some far steps away from her mother, and glancing up at the man beside her, gave an awkward nod. “Fair play.” She mumbled, much to Sebastian’s confusion. Effie always had a blank, unamused look on her face, and it was even more obvious today. “My version of you could barely lift a shopping bag. But, you don’t need to keep impressing your wife.” 

How could you respond to that? Sebastian simply didn’t, other than a somewhat-amused look.

Read hunger games when it came out like ten fucking years ago and then some. Had a group of friends who was into it. Friend group eventually broke up. Eventually got bored with it fandom. Literally recently got rid of the books cause like....well they were clogging up the shelf.

Anyway

Coworker is torturing me at work (long story) so after she leaves I tend to put on little YouTube videos essay things to calm down.

Find one about the "perfect cruelty of the hunger games" explaining how the games themselves are used to surpress empathy while encouraging a facade of it

Dude that's interesting, why not?

Video talks a lot about song birds and snakes and the early games and someone called Lucy Gray?

Decide to look up some stuff aboit the book. Vaguely remember hearing something about it?

Get weird about 10th hunger games. Decide to just check out book from library

I also start rereading the books. HOLY SHIT THOSE HOLD UP.

Movie REALLY GOOD. decide, why not let's rewatch the movies because I've only ever seen the first one and she's only seen the first two.

Last time hunger games was popular and everyone was trying to play Which Character Are You , @bestnoncannonship got assigned Katniss. She wore her hair in a long braid at the time and had a blonde little sister she was crazy protective of. Also was the only one of us who had any idea about surviving in the wilderness or anything like that, being from The Country. But she never liked Katniss, see?

(group cosplay of hunger games characters never materialized. I always wanted to do the four Careers. mostly cause I liked Glimmer. )

Anyway. My character was always Effie Trinket. Didn't have much choice in the matter. old friend group took one look at me and go, it's pink, it's a bit too naive about how things are in the Not Here, its occasionally scandalized if you use the wrong forks, and let's be real it doesn't REALLY understand what trees are outside of parks. Does this bitch look like she's ever seen a district to YOU?

So we're watching the movies and at some point Ann gets REALLY ATTACHED to haymitch.

It's like an oh. OH. moment.

Wrong district 12 Victor.

She says she couldn't identify with men because of Gender ISSUES back in the day. But now that pesky little gender broke and we can identify with ANYTHING.

Gets real into Haymitch. Realized haymitch and Effie are a ship.

We both go down the Hayffie rabbit hole.

Anyway this culminates on June 6.

There are so many things I want to do before (and after) sunrise on the reaping comes out, so here’s a non-exhaustive list.

(Note: I know some of these have probably been done before, so it’s not like I’m trying to copy or steal someone else’s ideas, just that I want to do these on my own. I wrote a whole ass paragraph about it in my drafts but it’s basically just a worry of mine, and I overthink lol)

•Sunrise on the Reaping protagonist speculation.

•^Also, mock up SotR covers. I can see the bird on the cover being a canary or a mockingjay, OR it being purposefully vague.

•Just Sunrise on the Reaping speculation and theorizing in general. Especially because THG could just release the blurb or a confirmation at any moment LMAO

•Thg tier lists.

•The shipping polls—I actually originally planned for that to be a starting off poll for me to follow up and explain MY own personal thoughts on “every” Haymitch ship (I still ‘hardcore’ ship him and “his girl.”

•AU posts. Specifically pre-SotR “AUs.” Like rn I have this idea of exploring concepts if Haymitch’s “girl” was the protagonist of SotR. Or Mr. Everdeen (if the “Maude Ivory is Katniss’s grandma” theory follows true, or if that’s established in an AU, then Mr. Everdeen being the protagonist or a central character might connect the whole family narratively LMAO)

•Fanfiction posts…perhaps.

•Wiress and Beetee. Just them. Anything related to them.

•Sharing fandom related resources. I kinda wanted to make my own wikis at one point, but since the SotR announcement I’ve decided to focus on other projects. But the wiki idea is still in my heart. I wanted to make it personalized, or maybe two versions—one canon compliant/only using canon or confirmed information, and one that’s like my own little personalized information.

•Hunger Games OCs; kinda related to the Fanfiction bullet point but it would be fun to like actually craft a couple of canon compliant OCs. Or non-canon compliant OCs too. But I should probably do that before SotR comes out too💀 I’m just now realizing what a time constraint SotR is putting on me (jk it is literally all self-enforced)

•Book annotating “series.” I’m gonna annotate a thrifted copy of THG, CF, and MJ. I’d like to maybe share or document that process.

•Fanart. Specifically fanart of book-exclusive characters and scenes.

•Cosplay!! I kinda wanna do a Maysilee one and an Effie one, since I’m a lot more femme and I think those would come out well. Ish. Also before we (likely…?) see Maysilee on screen I want to get a chance to depict her while nothing is confirmed.

Etc etc. I feel like there are so many more

Are you into the Hunger Games series?

I was! I even cosplayed as Katniss and my bestie cosplayed as Cinna and my other bestie cosplayed as Effie at the film premier. I would show you those pics, if antis weren't constantly combing my blog for their FANDOM COPS blog.

I never got far enough in to read or write fic, mainly because I was very happy with how the series turned out and I even liked the film adaptations.

I am debating on Songbirds though...I see a tragic love story and I love a tragic love story and I LOOOVED Snow as a villain...but I'm debating if I should read the book though for the full experience or just enjoy the movie.

So it's a hard MAYBE. Kinda wanna see others thoughts on it first.

Hey prev, exact same story but I was in college when the first movie came out (you don't know how long I tried to phrase that without aging myself. It could not be done. I am way older than a lot of this fandom and NOT happy about it. Do I get points for being there when all this came out?) and EVERYONE was talking about hunger games. Friends were OBSESSED. years pass, I move on to other fandoms, remember hearing vaguely about songbirds and snakes, and the movie just came out and my YouTube algorithm suggested some video about hunger games and I watched the video and was like ...hey I probably should read the new book, make college me happy.

wound up reading it, LOVING it, rereading the og trilogy, watching the movies I hadn't seen when they first came out (I had somehow only seen the first one?) and DEFINITELY identifying with the adults this time.

Original college friends were all about Rue and Clove and Katniss . Current group of friends are literally all identifying with various victors (and one lonely Sejanus) (and me. The Effie of the group. Which hasn't changed. Although I vaguely remember wanting to cosplay Glimmer for something ?) We are old. We are tired. And we are somehow still dealing with the same bullshit.

Anyway just past the Holy Fuck point and am solidly in the Guess I Live Here Now at LEAST until sotr comes out.
