Did you know the free resource www.BIGforAnimals.com also includes three 1-hour long educational videos? The videos "pop-up" when you click the images (shown below) on the site. They provide additional information about the following topics: • What is functional behavior assessment. • What is the difference between restrictive, intrusive, aversive, and optimal. • Why it is important to avoid recipes for behavior resolution. Visit the site to enjoy this resource designed to provide an evidence-based approach to behavior interventions. #BIGforAnimals #Behaviorinterventionguidelines #behaviorproblem #animaltraininguidelines #trainingguidelines #animaltraining #animalbehavior #animaltrainingresources #exoticanimaltraining #alternativetothehierarchy #alternativetothehumanehierarchy #alternativetoLIMA #leastintrusive #leastrestrictive #leastaversive #LIMA #Leastinstrusiveminimallyaversvie #behaviorchangehierarchy #humanehierarchy #superimposition #noncoercivenegativereinforcement #constructionalapproach #constructionalaggressiontreatment #constructionalaffectiontreatment #functionalbehaviorassessment #functionbasedintervention #effectiveefficientoptimal #ethology #practicalapplication #zooanimaltraining https://www.instagram.com/p/CTA3fSJlbHG/?utm_medium=tumblr

Learning to love the learning processes. Some of you who attended the Global Online Animal Training Summit in 2020 may recall Dr Parvene Farhoody did a presentation on this topic. In this she discussed how the learning processes are influencing our behavior all the time whether we see them or not. I have also presented on the non-coercive application of negative reinforcement in the constructional approach with exotic animals at numerous conferences. And I have done several livestreams about topics such as using negative reinforcement and positive reinforcement together, punishment awareness, time-out from positive reinforcement, extinction, and the list goes on. And don’t forget the awesome podcast with Dr Joe Layng about when positive reinforcement is coercive and the recent Constructional Approach to Animal Welfare and Training Conference. There is an amazing community of people really pushing for a better understanding of behavior science. Why is this so cool? Because it all leads to better welfare for animals! I have been training animals for over 30 years and I have never been more excited about what I have learned and changed about my training in the last few years. Visit www.BIGforAnimals.com and watch the videos to learn more about awareness of the learning processes and non-coercive applications of negative reinforcement. #BIGforAnimals #Behaviorinterventionguidelines #behaviorproblem #animaltraininguidelines #trainingguidelines #animaltraining #animalbehavior #animaltrainingresources #exoticanimaltraining #alternativetothehierarchy #alternativetothehumanehierarchy #alternativetoLIMA #leastintrusive #leastrestrictive #leastaversive #LIMA #Leastinstrusiveminimallyaversvie #behaviorchangehierarchy #humanehierarchy #superimposition #noncoercivenegativereinforcement #constructionalapproach #constructionalaggressiontreatment #constructionalaffectiontreatment #functionalbehaviorassessment #functionbasedintervention #effectiveefficientoptimal #ethology #practicalapplication #zooanimaltraining https://www.instagram.com/p/CSesC3lH6sv/?utm_medium=tumblr

Are you a superimposer???! What is that you ask? Superimposition is when one behavior is superimposed over another. (Our team learned about this from Dr Joe Layng https://animaltrainingfundamentals.com/podcasts/dr-joe-layng/ ) For example, let’s say we have a parrot who bites at hands when food and water bowls are changed and biting successfully makes hands go away. One way many have been taught to address this is to train the bird to sit on a perch in order to receive nuts. The stationing on the perch behavior is superimposed upon the biting at hands behavior. Stationing is maintained by positive reinforcement and biting is maintained by negative reinforcement. Even though this approach looks like it “kinda” works, functionally it does not. In www.BIGforAnimals.com, we first want to give the bird what it really wants, which likely isn't food. It is to make those hands go away! We can do that by creating an environment so that the bird is able to present desired calm behavior in the presence of hands so that we have an opportunity to reinforce desired responses by removing our hands. We can shape with negative reinforcement until we have the desired behavior of a calm behavior while we change bowls. We can also include the stationing behavior later, but if we never address the behavior that works for the bird to get the desired outcome all we are doing is superimposing one behavior (stationing) on top of the problem behavior (biting). Have you heard the word intrusive and wondered “What the heck does that really mean?” Maybe you have heard the words “least restrictive.” Even the word “aversive” can be a bit tricky. Our www.BIGforAnimals.com team investigated these words for good reason. We also offer an alternative word for your consideration that we think works better to meet our real objective when it comes to animal welfare and ethics. You can watch a video on the www.BIGforAnimals.com site that explains more. #BIGforAnimals #Behaviorinterventionguidelines #behaviorproblem #animaltraininguidelines #trainingguidelines #animaltraining #animalbehavior #animaltrainingresources #exoticanimaltraining #alternativetothehierarchy #alternativetothehumanehierarchy #alternativetoLIMA #leastintrusive #leastrestrictive #leastaversive #LIMA #Leastinstrusiveminimallyaversvie #behaviorchangehierarchy #humanehierarchy #superimposition #noncoercivenegativereinforcement #constructionalapproach #constructionalaggressiontreatment #constructionalaffectiontreatment #functionalbehaviorassessment #functionbasedintervention #effectiveefficientoptimal #ethology #practicalapplication #zooanimaltraining https://www.instagram.com/p/CSJ5H8inSi6/?utm_medium=tumblr
