Giro d'Italia Women - Stage 5
With a relatively flat course, Stage 5 of the Giro was likely the last day for the sprinters, so the sprint teams (lead by SD Worx-Protime) kept the breakaways in check, letting only single riders go up the road and keeping them on a short leash.
Yesterday's winner Clara Emond (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) took some mountains points to further secure her lead in the mountain classification. The last solo breakaway rider was Marta Jaskulska (Ceratizit-WNT), who was caught with 8km to go, setting things up for the expected bunch finish.
Tumblr media
In the sprint, Lotte Kopecky had a flawless lead-out from her teammates Elena Cecchini and Barbara Guarischi, and won in commanding fashion. Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) and Arlenis Sierra (Movistar Team) came in second and third, respectively. (We rather like photos of stage victories when teammates celebrate behind, as Guarischi did when Kopecky crossed the line!)
Tumblr media
With the bonus seconds from the stage win, Kopecky moves within three seconds of Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) on GC, with Cecilie Uttrup-Ludwig (FDJ-Suez) still in third, having finished in the bunch along with with ELB.
Tomorrow the road pitches upward, and it will be interesting to see how Kopecky climbs, what kind of form Uttrup-Ludwig is in, and how ELB will defend her pink jersey.

Fired pro cyclist Andrea Piccolo turns to OnlyFans
When one door closes, another one opens? Andrea Piccolo appears ready to start a new chapter following the abrupt end of his cycling career: OnlyFans. In June, EF Pro Cycling announced the immediate termination of its contract with Italian rider Andrea Piccolo. This decision came after the 23-year-old was involved in two substance-related incidents, one legal and one not. In a statement on X, the…

Who is U.S. cyclist Kristen Faulkner, the winner of the women's road race?
She quit her venture capitalist job in 2021 to pursue training full time. She won the 2024 U.S. Pro Road Race and only had three Grand Tour stage wins over the past two years, not nearly as many as her competitors that surrounded her at the end of the women’s race in Paris. Even though she liked road cycling more and rides professionally for EF Education-Cannondale, it was track cycling that…

Tour de France Femmes - Stage 3
This afternoon/evening brought the strage, short individual time trial Stage 3 of this year's Tour de France Femmes, in and around Rotterdam. One of the largest port cities in the world, the course highlighted the many famous bridges of the city, and made some opportunities for riders that might night be competitive in a longer or steeper ITT, but could place well in a short, flat stage.
We wondered how Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich-postNL) would fare, and she put in a solid performance and did the yellow (skinsuit) proud.
Tumblr media
However, the big guns came out, including Canyon-SRAM's Chloe Dygert, sporting her world champ ITT jersey and the pink shoe covers.
Tumblr media
Dygert put in a fast time, but Demi Vollering rode a very aggressive ride and landed five seconds ahead of Dygert. Vollering was definitely one of the top picks for this stage, and she perhaps seemed more surprised than we did at her win.
Tumblr media
We have to shout-out Loes Adegeest of FDJ-Suez, who took a very close third place behind Dygert, this was a very impressive ride by Adegeest. Just a fraction of a second behind her was of Cédrine Kerbaol of Ceratizit-WNT Pro Cycling. Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) and Ellen van Dijk (Lidl-Trek) were just one second behind that duo.
At the end of the day, Charlotte Kool is no longer in yellow, but she's looking very good in green, and she has to be quite pleased with her lead in the sprint classification.
Tumblr media
And Demi Vollering is in yellow, perhaps earlier than she expected. Will SD Worx-Protime ride to keep her in yellow, or do they mind giving it away for a day or two? We'll see.
Tumblr media
Tomorrow is the "Classics" stage, with portions of both Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege featured in a long, hard course that makes its way into Belgium and finishing in Liege.
