OLNF SECRET SANTA FIC
@olnfsecretsanta2024 @olnfsecretelf
HEYY @smileylord ! I'm your secret santa this year!!
So Merry Christmas! i had a really fun time writing this especially cause it was a fun challenge with someone else's OC.
it takes place in step one on christmas day.
it doesnt have a title and i'm sorry if its super descriptive.
______________________________________________________________
Golden Grove had its usual chilliness to it, except now it was wintertime. Snow layered every roof and branch, and all the warm tones of leaves had been buried under the snow by now. Edwin Porter walked slowly into his yard, heading towards the street exiting their little cul de sac, his shoes crunching rhythmically against the freshly fallen snow.
It was nice and quiet. After a full day of Christmas with his mom—presents, eating at the diner table, and a movie marathon in their living room—it felt good to stretch his legs. The cold air nipped at his cheeks, but Edwin didn’t mind. He was meeting his best friends, Qiu Lin and Tamarack Baumann, in the center of town, a cozy spot at the heart of Golden Grove.
The town was always decorated to perfection. Golden Grove seemed to thrive in winter, the small-town charm heightened by the festive season. Twinkling lights lined every storefront and home, and Edwin could already see the glow of the giant Christmas tree lights reflecting off the snow. He fiddled with the zipper of his coat as he walked, tugging it up and down absentmindedly, the sound blending with the soft crunch of snow beneath his boots.
The center of town was alive with quiet activity. People shuffled from shop to shop, snow sticking to their boots, their chatter blending into the hum of distant holiday music playing from hidden speakers. Families passed him with wide grins and bright scarves, pulling sleds or holding cups of steaming cocoa. It all felt peaceful in a way Edwin found comforting.
The town was hosting a little gathering today for Christmas, and Qiu, Tamarack,  and Edwin all agreed to meet each other there. It didn't take much convincing from Qiu and Tamarack for Edwin's mom to let him go. It's a safe town after all, and it's not the first time they've done this.
As Edwin got closer to the spot they were planning to meet, he could see everything closer. There were tables set out with little snacks and pastries provided by local businesses, and familiar faces from town all around the decorated streets. Now he just needed to find his friends.
“Winnie!” Tamarack’s voice rang out, clear and cheerful, from across the street.
She was easy to spot, bundled up in her usual outfit, only it was now winterized with a pair of leggings underneath her overalls and a fuzzy hat that made her look a little like an overenthusiastic elf. She waved at him, her arm flailing like she was signaling an airplane.
Beside her stood Qiu, definitely calmer but no less warm. He was sporting his usual green coat, with little snowflakes resting on the fluff of his hood. “Hey!” He nodded at Edwin, his small smile crinkling the corners of his eyes.
Edwin raised a hand in greeting, his heart lifting a little as he approached them. He didn’t say anything—he didn’t have to. His friends understood him.
Tamarack wasted no time, closing the distance and pulling him into a quick, squishy hug. Her sweater made it feel like being hugged by a marshmallow.
“You made it!” she said, her breath puffing out in white clouds. “I was starting to think you might get snowed in or something.”
“It’s like, barely snowing,” Qiu said, gesturing to the light flurries drifting lazily around them. His voice was soft, a grounding presence compared to Tamarack’s exuberance.
“Okay, Mr. Weatherman,” Tamarack shot back, giggling a little.
“Anyway,” Qiu said, stepping closer to Edwin, “we saved you a spot by the fire. Come on!”
Tamarack grabbed Edwin’s sleeve and tugged him toward a little bonfire at the edge of the street. The warmth grew stronger with every step, and Edwin felt the heat on his cheeks even before they reached the circle of glowing fire. Families gathered around, their quiet laughter blending with the occasional crackle of burning logs. Tamarack plopped down on one of the wooden benches surrounding the bonfire, patting the seat next to her.
“Front row!,” she said with a wide grin.
Qiu sat on Edwin’s other side, his hands tucked into his coat pockets. He nodded toward the fire. “Perfect spot, huh?”
Edwin gave a small nod, a faint smile tugging at his lips. His friends always made things easy, even on days when words felt impossible.
“Look at what my omi gave me!”
Tamarack was already digging into her bag, producing a slightly squished chocolate bar. “Okay, marshmallows or no marshmallows?”
“Marshmallows,” Qiu said immediately, his tone so serious it made Edwin silently chuckle softly.
“Good answer,” Tamarack said, passing out skewers and marshmallows.
The three of them roasted their marshmallows over the fire, the sticky treats bubbling and turning golden brown. Qiu started to talk about his family’s Christmas morning, things ranging from what he did, who he hung out with and what he got, “My parents got me some new pens for my notebook,” he said, his voice full of contentment.
“Maybe it’ll make you keep track of your litter more now,” Tamarack said.
“Hey, I don’t lose them that much!” Qiu exclaimed, waving his marshmallow like it was a sword. “They always come back to me anyways.”
“Because you lose them so much!” Tamarack groaned, but Edwin caught the way her lips twitched like she was trying not to laugh. He smiled faintly, his eyes crinkling. Tamarack always brought this kind of lively energy to their group, and Qiu always managed to lead the conversation with his affability. It was a balance Edwin liked.
Edwin mostly listened, his skewer turning slowly in his hands. He didn’t feel the need to contribute; he didn’t have to. The rhythm of their voices, the crackle of the fire, and the occasional burst of laughter filled the air around him, wrapping him in warmth.
When their marshmallows were perfectly roasted, they carefully assembled their s’mores. Tamarack, somehow, ended up with sticky marshmallow on her hands and the tip of her nose. She didn't look particularly upset about it though.
“how did that happen?” Qiu questioned with a shake of his head, handing her a napkin.
“I don't know, it just did,” she said cheerfully, wiping her face.
Edwin handed her another napkin without a word, his smile hidden behind his scarf. Tamarack noticed and smiled at him.
After the s’mores, Qiu pulled out a thermos. “Hot cocoa. My mom made it this morning.”
The cocoa was rich and warm, with just a hint of cinnamon. Edwin held his cup close, letting the steam warm his face. Tamarack let out a satisfied sigh after her first sip, and Qiu smiled quietly, clearly pleased with their reactions.
As they drank, Tamarack started humming what was probably a Christmas carol. It was soft at first, barely audible over the crackle of the fire, but soon Qiu joined in. Edwin didn’t hum along, but he didn’t mind. He simply leaned back, watching the snowflakes drift lazily through the firelight.
After a while, there was an interruption in the silence. “Oh wait!” Qiu nudged Edwin gently. “We got you something.”
Tamarack reached into her bag and pulled out a small box wrapped in shiny red paper. “Merry Christmas!”
Edwin hesitated, his hands brushing the wrapping paper. He unwrapped it carefully, revealing a set of metallic gel pens in a rainbow of colors. Tiny stars and planets glittered on each pen, catching the firelight, each in their respective colors.
“I saw them at the store and thought of you,” Qiu said. “You like space and stuff, right? Plus, they’re perfect for school.”
“They’re perfect,” Tamarack added. “Way cooler than boring black pens.”
Edwin nodded quickly, his way of saying Thank you.
Edwin’s eyes lit up as he turned the pens over in his hands, his smile growing. He glanced at Tamarack and Qiu, his gratitude shining through even without words.
“See? Were the best friends ever,” Tamarack said, leaning back with a triumphant grin.
Qiu chuckled, shaking his head. “Alright then”
Edwin let out a chuckle, not loud enough for most people to hear, but Qiu and Tamarack did. They always did.
They sat there for a long time, sipping cocoa, roasting another round of marshmallows, and sharing quiet laughter. The world outside was cold and vast, but here, with his friends, Edwin felt safe.
And for the first time all day, he realized he wasn’t just happy—he was content. And that was the best thing he could have gotten this Christmas.
______________________________________________________________
Anyway that's it I REALLY HOPE YOU LIKE IT SO SORRY IF YOU DON'T. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

2024 WRITING REVIEW
thank you for the tag @ahyperactivehero !!
stress free tags: @oddessea @nix-nihili @read-write-thrive
number of stories posted to ao3: 8! Exclusively Dead Boy Detectives and I started in August, there will be more in 2025!
word counted posted for last year: 45,885 words
fandoms i wrote for: Dead Boy Detectives
pairings: mainly payneland, but also palasaki
stories with the most kudos, bookmarks and comment threads:
kudos: I'll Love You Carefully - A cursed Edwin falls from the Tower Bridge and Charles rushes to his rescue
bookmarks: also I'll Love You Carefully (something about protective!Charles just hits right)
comment threads: The Road to Ruin - Edwin gets taken to Hell for the second time but Charles is in a much much worse mental state
work i’m most proud of (and why):
it must be The Road to Ruin because I am actually proud of my characterisation of Charles and it's my first attempt at a multi chapter fic, so that alone is enough for it to have a special place in my heart. I love really getting into the Hell aspect of it all and I think the introspective nature has something to it that I previously never quite managed to capture with my writing.
work i’m least proud of (and why):
probably How Could You Think, Darling, I'd Scare So Easily? - Charles gets capture by Esther and Edwin rescues him Tam Lin style. It was the second fic I ever posted but I have to say I should've worked longer on it. It's not bad but I realised that it could've been more angsty and it feels kind of rushed when I reread it now
share or describe a favorite review you received:
it was so hard to pick just one because I love every single comment and they all make me stay motivated and want to get better. But if it's just one, then probably this one:
Tumblr media
(sorry for all the tags btw, oddessea dear, you've been such a huge part of my journey on ao3, I cannot thank you enough!)
I think this is the one comment that genuinely made me tear up because I had been struggling with the way I wanted to write this fic and reading that it apparently worked out was just absolutely bloody wonderful
a time when writing was really, really hard:
Probably the last few weeks because I have all of these ideas but also a lot of pressure (put there by myself, mind) to have them turn out perfectly. I won't get into any details, but real life hasn't been too good either for a while now, so it's hard to get into the right mindset sometimes. But it will get better
a scene or character you wrote that surprised you:
Crystal surprised me a lot! I adore her so much and I want to do her complexity justice and while I don't think I have posted a lot of Crystal yet, I enjoyed writing my palasaki fic Bloom Like A Flower so much because it allowed me to show that while Crystal is incredibly powerful and has been through a lot, she's still a teenager
a favourite excerpt of your writing:
I think this one stuck with me:
He pressed Charles even closer to himself, as if he wanted to embrace him fully, so as to not let any of his demons reach Charles in any way. Charles moved to brace his hands against Edwin, somewhere between resting them on his shoulders and pressing them against his collarbones. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to push Edwin away in desperation or pull him closer until no one could untangle them anymore. Edwin was coming undone around him and there was nothing for Charles to do to ease his pain. It was obvious that whatever Edwin was seeing, hearing, feeling, it was paranoia and not something Charles could see. How could you help someone who saw the world burning and crashing around them while you were still standing on solid ground, mere millimeters between both of your realities? - The Case of the Turning Key
how did you grow as a writer last year:
A lot, seeing as I had never written fanfic before and had been struggling with my original works for so long that calling it "writer's block" would've been a huge understatement. So just the fact that I managed to finish 7 (!) fics is already a huge accomplishment for me. Apart from that, I got better at finding the characters' voices when changing POVs.
who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer, beta, cheerleader, etc.)
shoutout to a few people as well!
I obviously have to thank @im-perfectly-normal-about-this for listening to my yapping about various ideas in dms and giving me feedback on my Charles characterisation! I appreciate you so much!
Also dear @oddessea for making my day with every single comment you write!
And then of course the entire DBDA Haunt server. Joining was probably the best decision I made in 2024 and all of our discussions in the writers room are so special to me.
Thank you to: @genevievefangirl, @ahyperactivehero, @read-write-thrive, @moonikabear, @dead-but-still-sarcastic, @zmorak (I'm so sorry if I forgot anyone! Y'all are all so loved!!)
anything from your real life show up in your writing last year:
definitely, little nods to things I enjoy or have done myself. I am good at projecting my own insecurities and problems onto Charles and of course the best example would be Days by the Sea - the agency goes on vacation in Scotland. That was entirely created from my wish to someday visit Scotland
any new wisdom you can share with other writers:
have fun!! When I don't pressure myself into writing and just do it for fun, I get the best results, not because they're perfect or anything, but because I genuinely enjoy working on them and then also feel good about finishing them. Having fun is already a big step
any projects you’re looking to starting (or finishing) this year?
The Road to Ruin will defintely find an ending in 2025! Apart from that, I obviously have my F1 AU that I've been yapping about. A different Modern AU and then let's see what I'll come up with next 👀 I'm looking forward to this year <3

just curious do you have any artists you like or take inspiration from?
As for more traditional art, I love Leyendecker, especially for his use of white space. His composition is always great (I had the honor of seeing some of his work in person over a year ago...I got really close to take pics of his brushwork). John William Godward and John William Waterhouse are also really good, I love pre-raphaelite art, and Mucha of course but what gay artist doesn't like Art Nouveau...I've done a lot of studies for John Singer Sargent, Edwin Austin Abbey, and Lawrence Alma Tadema as well but I'm blanking on others atm. I'll probably remember right after publishing this.
I have a lot of digital artists I like but Ibuki Satsuki, Huaishen J, Lin Sun, Eriion Makuo, Merasgar, and yec_yourz are ones I really look up to. If I ever feel like my art is getting stagnant I check out their pages and scroll.

This is a mundane question, but it's one I think about a lot for my writing and I'm dying to know your thoughts.
When you write the boys, what rules do you follow for how they phyasically interact with the world? (i.e. What do they feel when they get thrown real far? Can they physically feel each other? What do you do about their clothes?)
Happy New Year friend!
First of all, happy new year friend!! I hope you have an excellent start to the year and I'm so excited to be blessed by more heartwrenching boys content from you in 2025 <3
but this is such a good question!! i think my answer is probably kind of boring, but initial thoughts are that i tend to try and be vague about this sort of thing unless i really have to, because it allows people to read their own headcanons about specific world building stuff into whatever i write. most basically: the boys can feel each other and they can feel other supernatural creatures and sometimes supernatural objects if it is plot relevant, and not much else. that's definitely poignant for metaphorical reasons, like "i have only ever known softness from you and either violence or nothingness from the rest of my eternal existence etc etc"
one thing i LOVE doing is to put the boys into very specific supernatural situations where they're suddenly able to feel things for the first time since their death (it's usually bad things, i'm sorry lads). in the grand scheme of a life cut short is just a little angsty thing i wrote for a prompt (breaking point) but i put them inside the head of a dying child psychic, whose brain then (understandably) tries to fight them off by throwing them into various unpleasant memories. it was fun to show how they both had weird relationships to pain and discomfort and to think about the physicalities that most stood out (like, Edwin noticing Charles' eyeliner smeared over his cheek, which would Never happen normally, but not realising his hand is bruised because that's such a minor thing compared to being torn limb from limb?)
also i feel like clothes definitely change if theyre feeling particularly traumatised or something (LOOVE the charles gets wet and disheveled when he's feeling sad of it all!!) you gotta Tam Lin the boys sometimes...as a treat. but also, i don't have much of a personal hc about whether they can change clothes at will or anything...which i will defend with the fact that they probably don't think much about clothes normally because theyre so used to just being able to wear whatever they're wearing :P
Sorry for the rambles and thank you so much for the question <3

For the fic writer asks, 7 and 22?
7. How many ideas for fics do you have right now?
ha...ha ha.... a Lot. currently in progress, i have 3 oneshots for crystal (trying to get them done by crystal week!) along with the aro crystal manifesto (a bit of a longer one that has been in the works for a while asdkjf). i have 2 payneland oneshots in the works (orb mode and ghost rule explorations), and 3 longer payneland fics i am actively planning on writing (tam lin au, a life in the day, and haunted hallmark movie). i keep getting ideas faster than i can write them alsdkjf i do have a full list of fic ideas that i probably won't be writing anytime soon (charles and the gramophone, charles and the iron tattoo, lost and found agency oneshot, charles suspenders fic, vampire edwin, crystal Reads jenny's love letter and realizes it is from a creep and so her and niko set out to solve the case, etc etc etc)
feel free to ask about any of these because i Do have a great deal of thoughts
22. Do you know how your fic will end before you start writing?
i do! i try to have all the middle bits sorted as well, but i almost always have an end point in mind. the one that i'm not 100% on is the tam lin au, but i've been chewing on that for a while and will chew on it for a while more lol

Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 35
This chapter reminded me how fast-paced this series is. If this was a weekly manga, this chapter would have ended with Ed reading the article about Maria Ross being convicted for Hughes's murder and the rest of the chapter would be the next chapter.
How did Lin get separated from the others. He was literally sitting alongside them on the train and he somehow got off and snuck outside before collapsing from hunger ...again.
We get this shot of one of the gates to Central HQ.
Tumblr media
Central HQ has four gates located to the East, West, North, and South. After cross-referencing this shot with other images of Central, I'm fairly certain this is the East Gate. I can't say this with 100% certainty though because the layout of Central HQ is highly inconsistent between chapters. In fact, none of the other chapters show any paths crossing at 90 degree angles of each other.
The main reason I assume this is the East Gate is because one image implies there's a path going from the South Gate and traveling North-East to the East Gate and one of the paths we see in this image matches that one.
Based on the next shot, it looks like the way to enter Central HQ is you have to pass through a gated enclosure at the base of any of its entryways and then walk up the pathway to the main entrance. Since Ed and co. were outside HQ, I guess that means the Court Martial Office is outside the main HQ fortification.
Roy did that eye thing again when Ed asked about Hughes. But he's terrified rather than angry. And then we don't see his eyes as he lies to them and admits to Hawkeye how soft he is. I wonder if he was struggling to keep his composure. He kept his back to them the whole time.
Al had to lean into this shot.
Tumblr media
Here's a fun little fandom detail. The Ed/Winry fandom uses the number 503 to refer to that ship. This was started because there's a brand of jean called Edwin 503. I bring this up because...
Tumblr media
Arakawa knew.
And then the big breakout heist. Maria Ross has been convicted of Hughes's death without a trial and Barry the Chopper decides to break her out. Along the way, he also breaks out Lin.
The guard who was interrogating Lin deserves a commendation. He was inside Lin's cell when Barry broke in and he made sure to lock the cell before fighting Barry.
There was an ocarina in the confiscation room.
Tumblr media
The bit when Ed and Al bump into them just reminds me of that one Shrek meme template.
Tumblr media
And Barry make his own chibi face during the encounter.
Tumblr media
And when Maria Ross encounters Roy in the alleyway, we don't see his eyes in the first panel, but they're doing that thing for the rest of the chapter.
Tumblr media
back
Spoiler Discussion
Let's talk about that heist!!
Obviously, Roy didn't kill Maria Ross and the details about the heist will be explained in chapter 41 with some additional info in 42 so I'll save that part for then. For this half, I want to talk about all the details that a reader could pick up to clue them in that there was more to what happened.
Just to start off, why would Barry break Maria Ross out to begin? If he were acting on his own, he'd have no reason to want to save her. At best, he would have broken in because he wanted to chop her up personally. And he also didn't kill any guards. His comment makes it sound like he's under orders to not kill anyone. Admittedly, one could argue he's still following Hawkeye's orders when he first went into Mustang's custody. And why would he be interested in Lin being from Xing?
Now onto the body.
Tumblr media
Knowing how the heist worked, the clearly cut chain on the band should clue you in that there's something up. Alongside that, you'll notice the band is otherwise intact. Now I want to mention that the melting point of iron is higher than the temperature used to cremate human bodies, and the cremation process takes a few hours, but Roy used an explosive force that supposedly instantly incinerated Maria Ross to ash and bone. That band should be either slightly warped from the heat or the chains should have been blown to pieces by the force.
Now onto conspirators. Obviously, Roy and Barry were major parts of the heist, but what about the rest of Roy's crew? We can say Falman was definitely uninvolved since Barry knocked him out before leaving. Meanwhile, Hawkeye seems to be unaware of what Roy was doing. Maybe he told her on the way out, but she had no involvement in it.
And how might things have gone more smoothly if Roy had been upfront with Ed and Al when he met them? They might have all stayed in their hotel room to mourn or maybe spend the day with Elicia and Mrs. Hughes. But because they didn't know anything was wrong, they went about their evening like normal and Al ended up finding a newspaper.
Also, remember this image from the backside of the newspaper. It's relevant later.

In my junior year of high school, I found myself in a situation that demanded my leadership skills. Our school's annual science fair, a highlight for both students and faculty, was facing a potential cancellation due to a lack of organization within the planning committee. Recognizing the importance of the event and the disappointment it would cause, I decided to take the initiative. I called an emergency meeting with the committee members, addressing the challenges we were facing and the implications of canceling such a cherished tradition. Through diplomatic communication, I facilitated a discussion that allowed everyone to express their concerns and ideas. As a leader, I proposed a revised plan, outlining clear responsibilities for each member and establishing a timeline for implementation. I motivated the team by emphasizing the positive impact the science fair had on our school community. Taking on the role of coordinator, I worked closely with each member, ensuring that tasks were completed efficiently. Despite the tight timeline, we successfully revamped the event, adding new elements to make it even more engaging. The science fair not only took place as scheduled but also garnered increased participation and enthusiasm from both students and teachers, highlighting the positive outcomes of effective leadership in navigating challenges.

2024 Writing Round Up 🪶
I'm delighted to be tagged by @soupandsorcery! I didn't even know this was a thing, tbh, and I love it. Reading up on your stats and favorites feels like a little remote New Year's celebration, tbh. But early, lol. I think @dgcakes would also appreciate it! Assuming this hasn't reached you yet, lol.
words posted: 249,647
additional words written: 25,942
grand total of words: 275,589
fandoms: Baldur's Gate 3, BioShock, Captive Prince, Darkest Dungeon, Dead Boy Detectives, Dragon Age, Fire Emblem, Gargoyles, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Psychonauts, Legend of Zelda
highest kudos: I started the Ferdinand Web of Love fanfic in 2022 but finished in 2024, and it got 130 kudos.
A strictly 2024 story is Grim Promise, Fealty Sworn at 122, an Astarion and Lae'zel friendship fic from BG3 that I've been told has perfect characterization <3
highest hit oneshot: The LoZ Forces Bigger Than Us story with 948, and I'm sure the Zelda/Ganon/Link tag helped there (although it's pre-relationship)
new things I tried: I've been on such a rarepair kick, and it's been delightful! I come back to the classics. But still!
fic I spent the most time on: I started this dark Hellfire Hawkedith fic in 2019, and I finished in 2024. I originally estimated it would take me 6 years, so I was technically ahead of schedule! Lol. There's a lot of heavy emotion in this story, but it's easily the one I'm most proud of. I grew a lot as a writer from this, and I'm rather attached to it because of the community it drew.
fic I spent the least time on: Definitely the demisexual Edwin piece from Dead Boy Detectives, both because it's short and I was going to explode if I didn't share my demi headcanon with the world, lol.
favorite thing I wrote: This was really tough to cut down from about 10 to 1, lol. But my top choice (other than the one I spent the most time on) would have to be Meeting the Bull's Chargers with Warden Carver and the Wardens I made up for him to travel with, haha.
🔥Out of my spicy ones, it'd have to be this Lorenz x Balthus x Ferdinand x Yuri oneshot that came out kinda fluffy around all the steamy stuff, lol.
favorite thing(s) I read:
Young, But For a Season - A mature Captive Prince fic, if only because I'm feral for Ancel and Berenger growing older together and Ancel handling it so, so well. Yes. For sure.
Maul the World Like a Carnival Bear Set Free - Adoribull with the focus on Krem and Dorian going from enemies to friends to brothers, so what's not to like?
This is Me Trying - An unrated modern AU for Captive Prince, because it contains the arc I want to Aimeric (but could never happen in canon).
To the Sun, to the Ground - A bit of Ferdibert fluff that was just what I wanted, and it's a good comfort when I'm feeling stressed.
between the motion and the act - Modern reality show AU for Damen/Laurent of Captive Prince, and it's every bit what you'd expect but also more than that.
In the Breeze - Platonic cuddling for Lin and Hubert of FE3H, yet another comfort fic, lol.
writing goals for 2025: I do want to bump KH off my AO3 dashboard for personal reasons, which means writing more Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition works (twist my arm, lol). But I'd also really like to lean more into the genre- and voice-defining work I started with that story I worked on the longest. It felt very satisfying, and I'm hoping to keep that up with more practice in stories like that.
new works: 102 fics on ao3, 1 tumblr fic/ficlet
