Evelyn: Well, wait a minute, Emily—don’t you want to stay here and talk about it?
Emily, leaving the room: No, I think I just need to be alone right now.

Emily, popping back in: François!

The Disability Library
I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.
And so, friends, Romans, countrymen, I present, a special disability and chronic illness booklist, compiled by myself and through the contributions of wonderful members from this site!
As always, if there are any at all that you want me to add, please just say. I'm always looking for more!
Edit 20/10/2023: You can now suggest books using the google form at the bottom!

showjumping individual qualifiers here we go:
Israel: Isabella Russekoff on C Vier 2. Micklem (or adjacent) bridle. pretty lighter bay. he spooks (or ‘spooks’) shortly after the final fence.
Canada: Mario Deslauriers on Emerson. that turn to the ‘bonjour paris’ wall is Tight. in time, only one rail down. Deslauriers has been doing this forever so that really doesn’t surprise me. double reins on an elevator or pelham bit.
Lithuania: Andrius Petrovas on Linkolns. Linkolns decided something about that jump or the course was not worth it and Petrovas retired. good for him!
Mexico: Andres Azcarraga on Contrendros 2. dropped a stride before the water and still cleared it - horses like that are the best. first double clear round! and an extra little buck.
Sweden: Henrik von Eckermann on King Edward. Oh that’s right he goes in a nose fly net thing. King Edward is Going today - “jumping out of his skin” yeah you’re right. definitely saw Eckermann grab mane.
Spain: Ismael Garcia Roque on Tirano. drop noseband. lots and lots of air on Tirano’s part. only one rail down.
France: Olivier Perreau on Dorai d’Aiguilly. mare! some froth i think. this girl is here to Get It Done. knocked a rail on the last fence. elevator-type bit with converter reins.
Saudi Arabia: Abdulrahman Alrajhi on Ventago. ah a kicker. tapped a rail but went clear and in time. froth.
Austria: Gerfried Puck on Naxcel V. okay i’m sure those fly mask things are blinkers but i can’t get a close enough look to confirm. drop noseband. much discussion from this pair - Naxcel has his own plans it seems. elevator-type bit with two sets of reins.
Japan: Eiken Sato on Conthargo-Blue. red ribbon. Disagreements after the water and over the red vertical. drop noseband, elevator-type bit with double reins. retires on course.
USA: Karl Cook on Caracole de la Roque. mare! one of the two mares going in a hackamore. her topline still bothers me. double clear. every time i’ve seen this mare she gets shit done.
Netherlands: Maikel van der Vleuten on Beauville Z. came in a little wiggly to that second jump (we’ve all been there). only one rail down and a 70 second course.
Ireland: Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz. would like a better look at that bridle. they are tearing through the course in style - no rails in 73.35 seconds.
Belgium: Jerome Guery on Quel Homme de Hus. converter reins. one rail down, four seconds under time.
Switzerland: Edouard Schmitz on Gamin Van’t Naastveldhof. quick buck as they get going. two rails down, four seconds under.
UK: Harry Charles on Romeo 88. always interesting to see which horse’s manes get braided for showjumping and which don't (Romeo 88 doesn’t). the double noseband situation bothers me, and also it seems like you could just use a flash. blinkers. double clear. some bucks just for funsies.
Norway: Victoria Gulliksen on Mistral van de Vogelzang. Mistral has things to say about the rein contact - tons of head shaking between fences. froth. double clear.
Australia: Hilary Scott on Milky Way. mare! pretty gray. i don’t think she has a throatlatch. knocked two rails - one in the double combination and one in the triple combination.
Poland: Dawid Kubiak on Flash Blue B. shadow roll and hackmore. blinkers maybe? two rails down.
Denmark: Andreas Schou on Napoli VH Nederassenthof. Schou’s shoulders look a little slumped as they come in - kinda odd, for how much we worry about our posture. maybe i'm seeing things. knocks a rail on the last fence.
Germany: Christian Kukuk on Checker 47. buck. pretty dapples. two rails, i think.
Brazil: Rodrigo Pessoa on Major Tom. i’m not going to make a built-in sponsor joke. or a Space Oddity joke. i’m not. lovely jump. double clear. i think Major Tom is the third? horse i’ve seen with his fly bonnet tied to the noseband so it won’t flap.
UAE: Salim Ahmed al Suwaidi on Foncetti VD Heffinck. froth. Micklem adjacent bridle. lots of praise after the round. four rails down.
Israel: Robin Muhr on Galaxy HM. two rails down. interesting how there are so many dark bays/blacks in dressage but considerably fewer in jumping.
Canada: Erynn Ballard on Nikka VD Bisschop. mare! big bold blaze. entered the ring fairly quietly. extra little kick over the jumps. i like this pair.

Is everything unfair in class wars?
Stumbled upon Culinary Wars and ganda ng thumbnail, so ayun na nga. Since I missed my doggo babes and my mid babe Vidi is extra clingy, sige na. Tambay bahay muna tayo on a Sabado while updating my small purple circle kasi may super bonding sesh akong namiss because 'di ko nasabing wala ako sa Manila last weekend. LERKZZ.
Bakit ba raw ako 'di nanood ng F1? Tugon: Kahit may free access pa, kakatamad because ang inet and 'di naman ako fan. LELS.
Speaking of Vidi, hayyyy. Hassle talagang 'di maging bothered and mag-lean toward "bonus" days na 'yung days niya with us. Tapos extra clingy pa. Dati 'di 'yan lumalapit sa akin. Now, gusto niya, either nasa ilalim siya ng sala set. Or nasa tabi ng home office chair ko. Then, syempre, dahil namiss namin ang isa't isa, nagluto ako ng lamb steak. SARAP. BTW, ayoko ng steak, pero 'pag lamb, actually, anything na lamb saka mutton/kambing, super oks for me. Mura pa saka 'di na masama since hati nga kami. I can clearly see his body detoriorating pero alam mo, ang lakas niya pa rin or baka sabi nga ni Doc A, mga dogs daw, ayaw pinapakita na hindi sila okay. HAYYYY.
Vidi, 5 years pa 'di ba? Or kahit 3? LOL. LUL. Eto na naman tayo. Ang aga-aga.
And so, Culinary Wars is like Food Wars pero totoong tao mga karakter. Part of me says na, Korea is really slaying its comm plan to "run" the world. Kasi napapayag nila mga top chefs aka White Spoons to go head to head with basic chefs aka Black Spoons.
New breed. Love ko rin si Comic Book Chef kasi sobrang weird niya and I think, he'd be ruling the Korean food scene soon and the world, too. LOL. Very hippie vibe siya pero alam mong he's just upping the ante of his folio rin naman. Fun-sized din siya kaya very interesting din.
Special mention kay Napoli Matfia because naman, ang galing niya gumawa ng risotto talaga with feelings for 100 people na naka-time pressure. Also, dami niyang tattoo and ganda ng hair niya ngayon. Onti lang followers niya sa IG pero as a girllyyyy na 'di masyadong bet pasta and Italian food, ten points for him diyan.
Etong CW mala-Squidgame x 100 x Parasite. Oh, the fallen stars. Eto na talaga ang testament that badges like Michelin Stars are but... badges. May mga nagsasabing kaya may paganito is marketing na naman para mas mag-travel on wheels ang mga tao in the name of good food 'di umano. LOL. As an example, wala bang sobrang sarap na pang-Michelin na Pinas-grown talaga? LOL. ULOL.
Compare mo Hawker Chan sa JT's Manukan. LELS. Syempre, bias ako sa DTF kaya let's not go there, pero gets ba?
Another example is 'yung Jay Fai x Crab Omelette sa BKK. LOL. Seryoso, oks lang siya. 'Di siya super duper sarap. Spectacle lang talagang panoorin si Madam with her goggles. Not to diminish her worth ha.
Pero again, seeing them side by side is sending a strong yet very subtle/sublime message na: Korea has to keep up to make its food accessible to the world. EMYYY. Galing ng agenda setting netong show na 'to. Bagong Finazzz, let's go! LOL. Kunin niyong direkkxxx si Here Cums D Sun ulit para on brand na on brand kayo. HIHIHIHIHIHI.
Loveeee talaga the suit na 'di black kaya kahit 'di igop si Anh Sung-jae in all levels, gesi. PUSH. Hassle din mag-nitpick 'to e. Plus the textured skin na 'di "Korean white" is just giving realness vibes din naman.
Sana manalo mga Black Spoons. As in.
As a homecook myself, ganda netong show na 'to. At the end of it all, it's all about the taste.
Plus, travel to taste and experience food.
Also, 'yung foundations ng cooking lalo preparing the ingredients. Sana all. Pinaka nakakatamad talaga mag-hiwa. And mga basics like ano bang tamang pagpapa-tender ng mga karne, seafood, and veggies.
And don't cook talaga forda feed. Feed the souls talaga siya.
Though experience and wisdom pa rin talaga, 'di rin 'yan basta-basta maha-hack. Ganda ng skillset ng mga White Spoons. Very classy. Very demure. EMYYY. Saka ang linis nilang mag-luto. Sana all. LELS.
So, anong luto kong next? Tocino, bacon, saka ham. Saka baka misua na may sardinas na 'di masabaw. Plus, gonna cook a Korean dinner in time for December na rin.

Movies I watched this Week #100 (!)
Yi Yi, my first acclaimed film by Edward Yang. An epic and universal 3-hour story about a middle class family in Teipei. Full of sensitive and profound details, quiet beauty and emotional intensity. (Photo Above).
10/10.
🍿
2 films about father-daughter relationships by new Scottish director Charlotte Wells:
🍿 Being a sucker for heartbreaking stories about divorced fathers and their young daughters, Aftersun was right up my alley. Not much is happening in this tender, little film where a woman remembers a Turkish resort vacation that her young father had taken her 20 years earlier. 11-year-old Frankie Cori was tremendous and reminded me of someone... 7/10.
🍿 I liked Charlotte Wells‘s 2015 Tuesday even more. In this 11-minute short she tells a similar story about a 16-year-old who spend every Tuesday at her divorced father apartment. It’s a nothing story: she goes to his place after school, he’s not there, and she sits around, rummages through his things and goes back to her mom. Sad and delicate. 9/10.
🍿
April Story, my first romantic story by Shunji Iwai. A slight and lovely film about a young woman from Hokkaidō who enrolls in Tokyo University. 4/10.
🍿
Why is Anna Kendrick’s twisted suspense comedy A simple favor such an enjoyable watching for me, so much so that I’ve seen it half a dozen times in the last couple of years? It’s one of those movies that every time I remember it, I give it another swing?
The script follows an unpredictable route and every 15 minutes changes genre and direction. Also noted this time: The score (by Theodore Shapiro, who also did ‘Severance’) is subtle and sublime. 10/10.
🍿
Martin Scorsese Presents: Now that Scorsese‘s 1973 lost film ‘Goncharov’ had become tumblr’s top trending new meme, I finally watched Gomorrah, My first mafia saga by Matteo Garrone. It had been on my film list since I covered half a dozen of Toni Servillo’s films last year. Both films are brutal descriptions of lives caught in the crossfire when two crime families in Napoli starts a deadly feud. Unapologetic violent, nihilistically gory. 6/10.
🍿
More Than I Want to Remember is a simple animated short about Mugeni Ornella, a 14-year-old Congolese girl whose village was burnt down by rebels one night making her a sudden refugee. Told supposedly by the girl herself, it is a poetic, straight-forward and tragic tale. 8/10.
🍿
Another Agatha Christie adaptation, Sidney Lumet’s Murder on the Orient Express, with an all-star cast, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Jacqueline Bisset, Anthony Perkins, Richard Widmark and more. Albert Finney is the detective with his ridiculous mustache and the atrocious accent.
🍿
21 old Lumiere films from 1895 to 1902 colorized and up-scaled in 60 fps, with sound. They run 22 minutes, with the first 4m33s describing the enhancing process by the Russian editor. Not historically accurate.
🍿
My first podcast (ever?): Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra. I loved listening to her during W clusterfuck years as she exposed his administration’s grift, graft and malfeasance. But her MO stayed the same, and the times had become darker and worst. In this series, she details the well-documented but somehow-neglected "Mass Sedition Trial" of 1944. The attempts by right-wing American Nazis to overthrow the government, during Hitler’s rise to power: The story of William Dudley Pelley, Earnest Lundeen, Father Charles E. Coughlin and their fellow Republican traitors and Insurrectionists.
However, her specific form of conspiratorial storytelling is grating. After a few minutes of the first episode, I quickly switched to just reading the transcripts. Also it could use a heartless editor: Instead of the nearly 8 hours listen, you’d better read 5 page Wikipedia summery.
🍿
