Dorothy Tutin as Anne Boleyn in The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970)
edited by me; apologies for any remaining artifacts! I’ve tried to get rid of them all but it’s still somewhat visible in the first picture
First two pics are from episode 1 (”Catherine of Aragon”, written by Rosemary Anne Sisson); the rest are from episode 2 (”Anne Boleyn”, written by Nick Mccarty). Henry VIII was played by Keith Michell, Eustace Chapuys (in the second picture) by Edward Atienza, and Thomas Cranmer (in the last picture) by Bernard Hepton.

Victoria Regina: Autumn (1.3, Granada, 1964)
"He is going to get well, isn't he?"
"I have not a doubt, ma'am, not a doubt."
"Nor have I, Dr. Clark. If I had, I couldn't bear it. But there are others here, my own children I am sorry to say among them, who haven't my confidence and courage - and I feel it, it's very trying. Those doctors, I didn't want them to come. But I had to give in, for the sake of others. I wish now that I had not. His knowing me and speaking to me again gives me such hope."
"Your Majesty's quite right to hope. There's no use in being anything but hopeful, and no reason not to be."
#victoria regina#autumn#granada#1964#classic tv#laurence housman#peter wildeblood#stuart latham#patricia routledge#joachim hansen#max adrian#geoffrey chater#edward atienza#hugh cross#fiona hartford#mary hinton#peter macann#ann tirard#beatrix mackey#maurice colbourne#all the episodes in this mini series are split into two parts to accommodate Granada's ad space‚ but this one is particularly neatly split#dealing with two very separate moments in tone and theme; the first establishing the potentially difficult nature of the Prince of Wales‚ a#rebellious young man of 18‚ and providing some light relief as Victoria receives the pompous and crawling poet Martin Tupper; the second#covering Albert's illness‚ death‚ and its immediate effect upon Victoria. the first half is very slyly witty at the expense of Tupper (a#very popular writer in his day‚ but much ridiculed by the next generation; Marx despised him‚ a view Housman apparently shared)#the meat of course is in the second half‚ as Albert wanes‚ and it's interesting to see how Victoria's character changes with him#spirited and strong in the first two plays‚ she appears here weaker of resolve and less certain in herself; after Albert's death she claims#he was the real strength of the throne and guided her in every decision that mattered (quite the opposite of her stance in Summer)#and wonders how she will manage to rule without him. a final scene with Palmerston‚ with whom Victoria barely conceals her hostility‚#allows just a faint hint of that inner steel to resurface once again..

Quarantine (Part 81)
Day 567 ng quarantine.
Sobrang busy ng Oktubre sa trabaho, na napalagay ako ng Sticky Notes for the first time since college ata.

LISTEN TO TLR’S LATEST PODCAST:
By Elias Atienza
Former Libertarian Party presidential candidate Austin Petersen has decided to run for Senate as a Republican instead of a Libertarian. Petersen announced his intent to run in an opinion editorial for the Kansas City Star:
“This is why I’m running to represent Missouri in the United States Senate. I want to give Missourians — and indeed all Americans — the kind of government that is worthy of them. Although I ran for president in 2016 as a Libertarian, I intend to make this run for the Senate as a Republican. I have made this change in large part because after personally reaching out to over 4,000 of my supporters, more than 98 percent of them said that the party of Lincoln was the best fit for my pro-life, pro-liberty, pro-Constitution stands — and more importantly, the best way to bring change to Washington.”
Petersen had heavily hinted that he would run as a Republican, sharing articles about potential rivals like Ann Wagner on his Facebook page, along with sharing articles from libertarian-leaning websites. Independent Journal Review published an article written by Austin Sekel, a member of the Republican Liberty Caucus, where he called for Petersen to run as a Republican.
There are several potential rivals for Petersen in the race: Tony Monetti, a veteran, has already declared, Carl Edwards, a NASCAR driver, has hinted at the idea, Attorney General Josh Hawley, Missouri House Speaker Todd Richardson, and former Representative David Steelman are just a few names.
It’s not likely Petersen will win the Republican primary, considering the amount of money goes into a Senate race, but he did take 2nd place in the Libertarian Party presidential primary when he didn’t have any political experience as a candidate. Now he has a presidential campaign under his belt which the Kansas City Star hailed as the ‘likely’ campaign of the future.
This time around, instead of the entire nation, Petersen’s only audience is the state of Missouri. A state in which his roots run deep, a state that he knows like the back of his hand.
Petersen wrote:
“Although I’ve spent a good deal of time analyzing the establishment elites in Washington and New York, at the end of the day, I’m a homegrown Missourian, a proud graduate of Missouri State and a longtime resident of Kansas City. I was born in Independence, and I grew up on a horse farm in Peculiar, a short drive from a town called Liberty.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: Austin Petersen is the founder of The Libertarian Republic.

By: Elias J. Atienza
CNN’s editor at large Chris Cillizza wrote an article on how Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and President Donald Trump have been come allies in the last few days over Trump’s allegations that former President Barrack Obama wiretapped Trump Towers. Cillizza argues, and I agree, that Paul is using this in order to continue his crusade against the surveillance state such as the FISA Court and the NSA spying scandals.
Paul is a noted privacy warrior. He ‘filibustered’ the renewal of the Patriot Act, has sued the government for the NSA spying, and has been a general thorn in the side of security hawks like Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham. Paul, while refusing to directly criticize Trump’s actions and views like he did back in the primary, has been reintroducing legislation that run contrary to many of Trump’s positions.
But what Cillizza is trying to get at is that Trump’s wiretapping claims are false. And they very well might be, considering Trump has not offered any evidence up until the Susan Rice report. Cillizza fires some shots against Paul and his attacks against the surveillance state.
However, Cillizza’s greatest mistake is his argument is his appeal to authority. FBI Director James Comey, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and House Intelligence committee chair Devin Nunes. In his assumption that Trump’s claims is false, he pivots towards Clapper, who told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd that no order for wiretapping came from the FISA court.
“I can deny it,” Clapper said.
But should we really trust Clapper? This is the same man who lied about one of the greatest breaches of the right to privacy in recent American history. Back after Edward Snowden revealed the extent of the NSA surveillance programs, Clapper was asked if the NSA was still collecting millions of Americans phone records and information.
No, sir,” he said during a 2013 congressional hearing. He later said it was an “clearly erroneous” answer in an apology letter to Congress. However, it was a clear case of perjury and one that has affected the lives of millions of Americans who believed their privacy was being protected by the federal government instead of being violated by it. Paul and his allies in the fight for privacy are right to argue he should be jailed.
Nor do people trust FBI Director James Comey or should trust him.
As the New York Times wrote in 2013, Comey has been involved in surveillance efforts for almost his entire career in Washington:
“Despite the showdown, in which Mr. Comey refused the request of White House aides to reauthorize a program for eavesdropping without warrants, he was later willing to go along with most of the Bush administration’s surveillance operations. He and his allies, including Mr. Mueller, eventually backed down from their threats to resign in protest after the White House made modest adjustments.”
Cillizza’s main point is that Paul and Trump are allies of convenience for now. But his justifications, his attacks against Paul, along with his appeal to authority, such as Comey and Clapper, makes his argument falls apart and makes his main point all but moot.

LISTEN TO TLR’S LATEST PODCAST:
By: Elias J. Atienza
President Donald Trump has gone through a turbulent first two weeks. Rocked by protests, marches, and lawsuits, his administration still doesn’t have most of their cabinet picks confirmed. Add to that the fact that Senate Democrats are promising to filibuster his Supreme Court pick, and a federal judge blocked a part of his executive order barring immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries.
Many liberals are up in arms against Trump’s actions and many conservatives have struck back with the “Obama did it” argument. This is used to point out hypocrisy for  liberals who applauded everything President Barack Obama did, including bombing more countries than President George W. Bush, to expanding the surveillance state, and even temporarily suspending the Iraqi refugee program.
Yes, liberals are hypocritical.
While they protest against a man who has temporarily barred immigration from seven different countries, most on the left were silent when Obama ended the “wet foot, dry foot” system that has been in place for decades, which effectively stranded at least a 1,000 Cuban refugees in Mexico. While at least 109 people were stranded by Trump’s executive order, there was no large outcry, no blocking of airports and protests against Obama’s actions.
As a writer in Rare pointed out:
“Because most did not pay attention to Obama’s anti-immigrant policies. There was no 24-hour, days long cable news barrage about it. There were no hashtags, social media campaigns or protests. The pain was just as real for those suffering, but the coverage and popular reaction were almost nonexistent.”
They stood silent as President Obama aggressively expanded the surveillance state that was revealed by Edward Snowden. As the erosion of the 4th Amendment continued under Obama’s presidency, there were no large scale protests as millions of innocent Americans data were swept up in a vast net by the National Security Agency. They stood silent as the White House pressured House Democrats to oppose a bipartisan coalition lead by Representative Justin Amash (R-Mich) to place serious limits on the NSA’s spying programs.
They stood silent as Team Obama justified killing a sixteen year old teenager who was looking for his father in Yemen.
As Conor Freidersdorf wrote in The Atlantic:
“Again, note that this kid wasn’t killed in the same drone strike as his father. He was hit by a drone strike elsewhere, and by the time he was killed, his father had already been dead for two weeks. Gibbs nevertheless defends the strike, not by arguing that the kid was a threat, or that killing him was an accident, but by saying that his late father irresponsibly joined al Qaeda terrorists. Killing an American citizen without due process on that logic ought to be grounds for impeachment. Is that the real answer? Or would the Obama Administration like to clarify its reasoning? Any Congress that respected its oversight responsibilities would get to the bottom of this.”
No widespread protests. No hashtags, no social media campaigns. Nothing but silence from the majority of the left. There might have been some peeps from them since a raid killed Anwar Al-Awlaki’s daughter, who is an American citizen, along with several dozen civilians, which was all sanctioned by President Trump. But so far?
Silence.
They stood silent as Obama drastically expanded the wars in the Middle East. While he didn’t put as many ground troops as Bush did, he helped further destabilize the region. When Obama bombed Libya without congressional approval, there was no widespread anti-war movement. Sure, there were some squabbles from the remnants of the anti-war left, but it was the libertarian’s voices who were the loudest. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky), Justin Amash, among others, who viciously defended the Constitution and berated the President for continuing the foreign policy mistakes of the past.
The list can go on about liberals hypocritical actions, but they should do some self-examination about having selective outrage.
But that doesn’t mean conservatives should use Obama to justify Trump’s executive actions. By doing this, they continue the trend of scapegoating the previous administration to continue their support for the terrible actions of the current president.
Was Obama right in barring refugees from Iraq for six months in 2011? Probably not, though his executive actions were a bit different from Trump’s widespread action, as explained by USA Today.
Is Trump right in barring refugees and immigrants from the seven countries in his executive order? Probably not, because out of the 3.25 million refugees settled in the United States since 1975, only 20 have been linked to terrorist charges. In addition, the CATO Institute found that “the measures taken here will have virtually no effect on improving U.S. national security.” Of course, some conservatives who want people to help refugees on their own will still be mad when a major company like Starbucks does exactly that.
By referencing Obama, conservatives hope to expose the hypocrisy of the left. And they are doing that very well.
But in the end, they will end up paying the price later down the road when Trump is out of office in 4 to 8 years. They protested Obama using executive orders, decrying his “I’ve got a pen, and I’ve got a phone” as executive overreach, but applaud Trump when he uses executive orders to accomplish his goals.
They will regret it if the next President after Trump is a Democrat and does exactly what Trump did; and instead of it being Obama being blasted, it will be Trump.
So please stop using Obama as an excuse to justify Trump. All it does is continue the cycle of blaming the previous administration in order to avoid taking responsibility. As long as conservatives and liberals play partisan politics, we’ll be stuck in this idiotic debate.
Justify Trump’s actions using your own logic, not continuing the downward spiral of American politics.
