How have we not been talking about the death visions both Kremy and Gideon see when looking at the ghost train!? They’re so sad, dark, and tragic.
Kremy dies flat broke and alone wandering through a desert with a zombified Gideon by his side. Something happened to Gid and was brought back in the only way Kremy could.
Gideon’s vision has him alone, having lost Kremy years ago. It’s the anniversary of the night they met and he’s drowning himself in alcohol. Then he gets sick, falls and died in a puddle of his own vomit.
Both visions involved one losing the other and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Note
I’m not sure if you’ll be comfortable answering those, but with recent police brutality in the U.S, I want to write about police torture of protestors and protestors’ feelings. I have a wheelchair user Latina girl and a blind Black trans man. They will be arrested together after the trans man tries to talk down a cop (inspired by a real video) and I wanted them both to be tear gassed. I have experience with police brutality, but was not arrested.
Part 2- How do they arrest blind people and wheelchair users? I understand mobility aids are usually taken away. Does this apply to canes for blind people? Also, I was going to have them in holding for 1 day with no treatment for their eyes after being tear gassed. Is this realistic or do you think police should pour water on them? I was going to involve the arrested characters all going on hunger strike, which might cause the police to transport them to booking faster. Does this sound okay?
-
‘Comfortable’ feels like the wrong word for all of this subject to be honest. I don’t think I could do this if I was comfortable, I am incandescent with rage. I am furious that the world we live in is still infested with this pointless, preventable brutality. Yes I am essentially a ball of rage and ferrets.
And a portion of that is about the fact it only really makes the news when it affects wealthy countries. Seeing the response in Kenya and Nigeria to these movements/events in the West has been… interesting.
Let’s start off with some definitions here because I think that will help as we discuss the story idea.
Realism in the context of these discussions doesn’t necessarily mean ‘this would happen to 100% of people in this situation.’ If we’re talking about torture techniques used and treatment of particular groups in society then it’s less a case of ‘does this happen or not’ and more a case of ‘how often does this happen?’ ‘how likely is this?’
Most modern torture is ‘clean’, which means that it doesn’t leave obvious external marks. But you do still get incidents (including in rich Western countries) where scarring torture occurs. They just a lot rarer.
And, continuing this example, if a writer came to me asking about writing a scarring torture in a modern setting I’d warn them about the implications that can go with that. I’d talk about how survivors of clean tortures are dismissed and belittled. I’d talk about how the harm clean tortures do is downplayed. And I’d say that while there’s nothing wrong with wanting to use a scarring torture in a story, when we do it’s important to be aware of the context: that scarring tortures are rare and that they’re not ‘worse’.
Everything you’ve described for your story is possible and it’s the sort of thing that’s more common in the country and time period you’ve chosen for your story.
I’ve found it difficult to get hold of larger studies focused on the US. A lot of the statistical analysis I’m seeing focuses on mental illness or doesn’t draw a distinction between mental illness and physical disability. That can be pretty common when you’re looking up stuff about disability. It can be a helpful approach in some respects, showing how the disabled population broadly is discriminated against. But it also masks things that affect particular sub sections of the disabled population by lumping everyone in together.
The Prison Policy Initiative has a page here you might find helpful, but most of these articles focus on mental illness and low IQ. Solitary Watch has a frankly horrifying list of cases in a prison where the disabled were routinely denied treatment and left in neglectful conditions that amount to torture. (The list includes a blind man denied a cane for 16 years.)
Based on individual cases I’ve read I’d say that what you have planned is realistic, in the sense that it is possible. Similar things have occurred in America.
In the absence of clear statistics on the number of disabled people in custody in the US, let alone how they’re treated, I’m finding it difficult to say how common this would be.
Part of the problem is a lack of consistent standards or definitions across the country. This is from a Reuters investigative piece on deaths and abuse in US jails: ‘Seventeen states have no rules or oversight mechanisms for local jails, according to Reuters research and a pending study by Michele Deitch, a corrections specialist at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. In five other low-population states, all detention facilities are run by state corrections agencies. The other 28 have some form of standards, such as assessing inmates’ health on arrival or checking on suicidal inmates at prescribed intervals. Yet those standards often are minimal, and in at least six of the states, the agencies that write them lack enforcement power or the authority to refer substandard jails for investigation.’ (Emphasis mine, full article series can be found here. It contains video footage of torture (beating), some graphic descriptions of racist abuse and miscarriage.)
What this means for you is that there’s massive variation between jails in the US. The variation affects everything from the structure of the jail itself, to staffing levels, to workplace culture, to oversight, to provision of medical care. Basically some jails are a lot more abusive and dangerous then others.
It’s also difficult to identify problem facilities because, as the Reuters article points out, a lot of the relevant statistics aren’t released to the public. Reuters came up with their statistics by examining jail records and reporting of deaths or abuse in local newspapers over a period of several years.
In some of the accounts from US prisoners I’ve read people were allowed to keep wheelchairs. In others they were taken away.
The cases where wheelchairs were taken were generally reported as part of a wider pattern of torturous neglect. I do not have enough evidence or cases here to say that that’s always the case: I don’t think this proves that prisons or jails which take mobility aids always neglect disabled prisoners. Because I don’t know whether taking a mobility aid, in and of itself, would be reported if it wasn’t happening alongside prisoners being left lying in their cells for days, unable to eat or clean themselves.
I’ve tried my best to read about disability generally over the years. Because I live in the UK most of what I know about disability is based here. I know about attitudes in Saudi, where I grew up and a little about Cyprus where my family is from.
Based on what I know about disability generally I’d say that when mobility aids and canes are taken away neglect and abuse are more likely. And I think that would include being left in a cell, having been tear gassed, with no water.
In terms of physically arresting people with disabilities, well there are problems with abuse of disabled people the world over. I’ve heard stories from a lot of different countries about people being ripped out of wheelchairs, being tackled, being dragged. Unfortunately a lot of people are taught to doubt disability and to treat obviously disabled people with contempt.
But you should remember that I read about the worst case scenarios. My knowledge is focused on abuse and ideas about what encourages or discourages it. Which can skew the perception of how common these things are. (I really wish I could find some decent statistical data here, the absence is maddening.)
I think part of the way to approach this is to break it down and figure out how many groups these characters are being passed between. I don’t actually know how the booking in process in the US works. (I’m sorry but the nature of the blog is that I’ve got a lot of broad knowledge, I’m not an expert on every police system in the world.)
The standard of treatment could easily vary between the people making the arrest and the people actually holding the prisoners.
And all of this means that I think you’ve got a lot of leeway here. There’s a big range of things that are possible here. So there’s scope to choose how bad it’s going to be.
You’re already doing that to some extent with the way you’ve planned this out and thought it through. That’s good, it’s important to work within your limits and focus on the elements you’re interested in.
There will be real cases similar to your story that went a lot worse and there’ll be cases where things went a lot better. No one story can capture everything and that’s OK.
I think these characters will probably be acutely aware that things could go very badly for them. They’ll probably have heard stories about people of their race, disability and gender being abused or even murdered by police. Use that in the story. Try to bring some of that fear and rage and defiance into the story.
I’m not sure what kind of cultural weight hunger strike carries in the US. I can link you to my masterpost on starvation which outlines the physical and psychological effects of hunger.
I also want to leave you my masterpost on solitary confinement, because I’m aware that US jails and prisons often put vulnerable prisoners straight into solitary.
It’s really clear just from your question that you’ve already put a lot of thought into this and done a fair bit of reading. Keep going.
You’re probably going to need sensitivity readers. It’s also probably going to take a lot of time, editing and re-reading to get this story as good as you want it to be.
And it’s going to be hard. Researching this stuff is incredibly exhausting. For the love of gods take breaks. I’ve got a guide to researching difficult topics here. It can be hard to follow the advice there, hell I struggle to sometimes, but you can’t let this stuff poison you.
 I hope that helps :)

I've been being treated for just depression & anxiety but I feel the meds (a variety) haven't fully helped me. Like they take the everhanging sadness off a bit but I still hitting a livelihood block. My sib was diagnosed with bpd but idk if that's what's troubling me too. So I guess, the question is is there any symptoms that you think indisputably say bpd?
Tumblr media
Hey, I get what you mean now, gotcha. So I'm glad you want to see a professional, and you should definitely prioritize that when it comes to people who can help, but here are (in my eyes/experience) some primary symptoms of BPD. Definitely take it with a grain of salt since, y'know, I have issues. But I do at least have experience and familiarity. (Also, several posts ago today, I reblogged a video by a guy who has BPD and it was REALLY useful along the lines of describing symptoms; if you have 30 mins to watch, it's worth it. Edit: link)
Really strong emotions that don't last a long time and are often triggered by specific events, in a way that makes you think your reaction is proportionate and reasonable based on what happened. "Yeah I'm freaking out, how could I not when I just found out X said Y and that changes everything?" BPD emotions feel very real as you experience them, but in reflection you may conclude that you had to have been faking it simply because it seems impossible to 'recover' so quickly. I've seen people say BPD is similar to bipolar in some ways for this reason.
Black and white morality/ethics, including but not limited to worldviews and interpersonal relationships alike. It feels like people who don't like you HATE you; people who are nice to you LOVE you; people who are indifferent toward you confuse you because you do not understand how they could have no opinion of you.
You may feel like you would die for what you love -- and would kill to defend them/it -- but if they/it ever had an issue with you, you would feel betrayed. "How could X say Y when I spent so long doing Z, which showed how much I care? They betrayed me." Flipping between seeing certain people or things as good or bad is often called "splitting" and is one of the main reasons people with BPD are often unintentionally abusive/accused of being intentionally manipulative. You can also flip between hating and loving yourself, whether on the inside or outside.
Feeling like the person you are -- even in casual, private interactions -- has to be planned as if you are playing a character, because you do not consciously know how you naturally act. This is something I've seen described less frequently, but I don't seem to be alone in experiencing. To me, having BPD often feels like there is no "real me" because the strongest, most 'real' and organic feelings I experience only occur when I am very angry or hurt. (I will say, I think there are people with BPD who experience more of the 'positive' version of that, such as crying at media or other people's experiences in a happy/sympathetic way, etc. -- the guy in that video talks about that.)
Rapid, impulsive physical appearance changes -- for a lot of us, likely tied to the aforementioned identity issues. You may feel like you could design a new human right now, change your appearance to look like them, and become that person -- because "I don't have a personality anyway, I can act like whatever other people want!" -- and you can! ...Until you have an episode, and then anyone you hurt might decide the snap was the "real you" -- especially if they aren't familiar with BPD. When it comes to impulsivity, be careful and take your time making decisions about hair color, piercings, and tattoos, as well as permanent financial decisions. BE CAREFUL WITH CREDIT CARDS.
Risk-taking behavior -- I'm not sure how to describe this, but it can include breaking the law, breaking some other sort of rules, self-harm, drug abuse, etc. (I will say personally, I only experienced this to the severe degree in question when I was also on an antidepressant that caused additional apathy.)
I hope this is a good start -- I don't want to throw too much in here, especially since you've already looked at symptom lists and stuff. I'm gonna put this in the BPD tags, if anyone else with BPD has experiences/symptoms they'd like to share too.

Interview Log 026-01
Interview with ████ █████, former principal at SCP-026.
Agent ██████: Thank you for your time, Mr. █████.
█████: Not at all. If there's one thing I have plenty of these days, it's time.
Agent ██████: So, let's get down to business. You were principal of [REDACTED] back in [REDACTED], is that correct?
█████: Yes, that's right.
Agent ██████: What can you tell us about that?
█████: Well, you've heard the stories, I'm sure. Folks say it was haunted. I don't know about that, but things did seem strange towards the end.
Agent ██████: Tell me about them.
█████: Let's see, there were the stairs, of course. You've heard about that, right? People would count fifteen coming up and sixteen coming back down. I'm sure there was a trick to it, like an optical illusion, but I never could figure it out. And we had a history book that turned up completely blank. [Pauses] I suppose these seem rather tame. But you know how it is. Little things add up. People tell stories.
Agent ██████: Tell me about the dreams.
█████: The dreams? Oh, yes. People were complaining about nightmares. Mostly students, but a few of the staff as well. It was always about school never ending. We joked about it at first, but more people talked about it. I didn't put much credence into it, but, well, when we found the blueprints didn't match up with the school, it seemed easier just to move to a new building. The schoolhouse was old, anyway, and we wanted a fresh start. And, just like that, things seemed to settle back to normal.
Agent ██████: I see. Is there anything else you'd like to add?
█████: Hmm. [Pauses] It's not really much, but maybe it will make a nice footnote in that book you're writing. I still sometimes have dreams about being in my office, back at the old schoolhouse. Sometimes I'm doing paperwork, sometimes I'm talking to someone, but it's always back behind the desk, just like old times. But gradually, I notice something's a bit off. The bell's ringing, but I don't hear anyone in the hallway. No students hurrying in or out of the classroom, no chatter, no footsteps, nothing but the bell. And it doesn't stop. The crazy thing is that I never notice it's a dream until then. I've been retired for ten years, but until I notice the bell, I think everything's normal. Crazy, isn't it?
Agent ██████: I think it's very interesting. Thank you very much. If you think of anything else, don't hesitate to give me a call.
█████: Any time.
Item #: SCP-026
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-026 is to remain securely locked and boarded up at all times when there is no research ongoing. Alarms are set to alert the Foundation in case of entry by civilians or other agencies.
Description: SCP-026 is a three (3) story public school building built in ████. It has two (2) wings connected to a central foyer. It was declared condemned in ████ after it was found the floor plan didn't match up to the building's blueprints (see Interview Log 026-01). It came to the Foundation's attention after several disappearances in the area were linked to visits to the abandoned building.
The building demonstrates spatial anomalies. Its internal space is much greater than the external surface of the building would allow. Hallways display variable length, while stairways have differing numbers of steps going up or down. The number of rooms off the hallways changes each time they are counted. Attempts to reach the far ends of the hallways have met with failure thus far. Entrance through the fire escapes located at the ends of the hallways leads to doors approximately midway down the length of the halls.
EDIT: See Note 026-A
There is considerable graffiti on the interior walls of the school. Most appears typical, including gang signs, names, and street art. However, the graffiti fades and reappears, changing location. Writing on chalkboards and bulletin boards changes in a similar fashion. Subjects typically found range from standard school subjects (mathematics, literature, biology), to more esoteric subjects, such as quantum entanglement, ████████, and eugenics. One researcher reported one board detailing information about SCP-████, but photographic evidence showed only a blank slate. The contents of notepads, books, and pieces of paper have been observed to disappear, only to reappear on surfaces within SCP-026. New writings have appeared, mostly drawn from graffiti or text-books. Note: caution should be exercised in bringing documents onto the grounds of SCP-026. The phrase "The children used to sing" has appeared multiple times in various places throughout the building, but there is currently no explanation for its significance.
A number of unconscious subjects have been found in the building, mostly of high school age, ranging from twelve to eighteen. They are dressed in accordance to the school's dress code, circa ████. Several have been identified as former students or faculty of the school who disappeared after the school shut down (in at least one case, more than ten years after the closure). It is currently unknown how they were transported back into SCP-026. (See Note 026-B)
All attempts to wake the subjects while inside the building have failed. On being removed from the grounds of SCP-026, the subjects wake abruptly. They experience a period of confusion, before dying from extremely rapid dehydration, followed by advanced decomposition. No useful intelligence has been recovered from the subjects to date.
The inability to wake subjects extends to those who fall asleep on the grounds of SCP-026, though the rapid dehydration only seems to affect those who have been found on the grounds of the school. See Incident Report 026-12.
Incident Report 026-12 During a routine security check of SCP-026, Agent Malek was found unconscious by his partner, Agent Jones, in the main foyer. Initial attempts at rousing Agent Malek were ineffective, so he was moved for transportation to Site ██. Upon leaving the grounds of SCP-026, he woke abruptly in a state of agitation. When questioned, he revealed that he had been dreaming of a classroom setting. This dream has been consistent throughout all subjects who have fallen asleep within the grounds of SCP-026.
Note 026-A: Robotic exploration and video feeds have shown that the apparent spatial anomalies are caused by changes in the perceptions of observers, rather than actual spatial phenomena. For this reason, SCP-026 does not require the expertise of Mobile Task Force Rho-8 "Roadside Picnickers" at this time.
UPDATE: Further exploration has shown that some spatial phenomena do occur. See the Exploration Logs for more details.
Exploration Log 026-4 Exploration conducted by Agent ███████
"All right, I'm walking into the lobby. Walls are mostly bare concrete, a little paint here and there. Graffiti everywhere. A few beer bottles, some other trash. Looks like just another abandoned building.
"Okay, I'm making my way up the stairs. More graffiti on the walls. Okay, I'm going into the hallway. The peeling paint is kind of creepy. Looks like some sort of sheet fungus. Reminds me of [REDACTED]. The doors are kind of weird. Some are really close, others are far. Really irregular spacing. Doesn't match up with the blueprint you showed me. Okay, here's a classroom. Pretty empty. Some old desks. Real old, like they had in the thirties. The chalkboard's got a few math problems on it. Looks like trig. Okay, I'm going to check out another room.
"Back in the hallway. Heading to the next room. Desks look more modern in this room. Made from particle board. More posters here. Look to be from the eighties, I'd say. I recognize some of them from when I was a kid. Looks like Latin on the chalkboard. Yes, I'm taking pictures.
"Okay, back in the hallway. Heading to the next room.
[Several minutes of silence]
"There's something really screwy with this place. I could swear the room was just a few feet away, but it feels like I've been walking for hours. Anyway, I'm here.
"We've got sleepers. Three of them, two girls and a boy. They look to be around fourteen, fifteen. They're all wearing the same uniform. Yeah, just like you showed me. Hang on a minute while I take some pictures. At least we can figure out who they are.
"The furniture's pretty old looking, what's left of it. Lot of broken chairs and desks. Nothing on the walls. Chalkboard's… The hell?
"You're not going to believe this, ████. It's got Agent █████████'s notes up there. In her handwriting, even. We're going to have to be really careful what we bring in here.
"Yeah, I've got pictures, don't worry. Okay, I'm going to check one more room, and then I'm out.
"Back in the hallway now. Heading for the next room.
"Another anomaly. I've been going the same direction this entire time, but I'm back at the stairs. Yeah, I'm just going to head down. I've had enough of this place for one day. I'll meet you at the door."
The developed photos revealed [REDACTED]
----
Exploration Log 026-12 Carried out remotely using a robotic drone via video feed. Exploring the first floor hallway.
The hallway appeared in poor condition, with graffiti on the walls. Comparison with previous videos shows the graffiti has changed. Many of the same signs were present, but in different positions. Some seemed new.
Doors were uniformly spaced on the wall. Some were intact, while others were cracked or missing entirely.
First room in the hallway was the girl's bathroom. More graffiti on the walls. Several broken mirrors. A toilet had been removed from the wall entirely and placed in the center of the room. There was a great deal of porcelain and glass on the floor.
The next room over was the boy's bathroom. This was skipped in favor of exploring the classrooms.
The first classroom had no furniture. The chalkboard was broken in two. On one side of the board, there was a set of lines reading "I will not pass notes during cla (sic)." The other side had fragments of a lesson on [REDACTED]. There was one poster on the wall, depicting Helen Keller.
The second classroom was well furnished, with the largest number of intact desks to date, mostly made from wood and steel in a style used in the 1950's. There were two sleepers found that had not been reported in previous sweeps of the building. The first was a male teenager in a student's desk. Comparison with File 026-04 revealed him to be ██████ ███, a former student of the school. He was reported missing ten years after the school closed down, at age twenty-eight. The other was a woman in her mid-thirties sitting behind the teacher's desk. Her identity is still unknown. The chalkboard had a timeline of World War 2, overlaid with an intricate piece of graffiti.
The third classroom had fifteen particle-board desks in various states of disrepair. A map on the back wall was consistent with the sociopolitical conditions of 1974. A bookshelf had collapsed, and spilled a set of encyclopedias onto the floor.
The robot was then guided to the end of the hallway and back to the entrance. There was no sign of spatial anomalies at this time.
----
Exploration Log 026-15 Exploration conducted by Agent █████, accompanied by a robotic drone.
"Okay, I'm in. Lobby looks like it always does. Probably some graffiti drift. Here comes the robot."
The lobby was compared to previous videos. Some differences in the graffiti were noted. Otherwise, no significant changes.
"I'm heading upstairs now. Goddamn, the robot's heavy. How much crap did you load on it? You could've warned me. Gonna rest a second on the second landing. Video coming in all right? Cool, cool."
First set of stairs was navigated without trouble. The second floor hallway appeared similar to the first floor hallway, though with less debris.
"I've caught my breath. Heading up to the third floor. Wish there was a guard rail… Next time, it might be easier to carry the robot and the gear separately, and load it in once it's up. The gear's pretty idiot proof. I think I could probably figure it out. Damn thing must weigh over a hundred pounds. There, on the third floor now. I count… twelve doors. Weird spacing. That last door's got to be at least a hundred yards down. This place is pretty messed up."
Rangefinder showed the hallway was approximately forty-five meters long. Five doors on each side, evenly spaced, with one more door at the end of the hall. Eleven total.
"I'm heading in. There's not as much graffiti up here. A bit of debris. I'm opening one of the doors. Janitor's closet, and, hey, we've got a janitor. He's sleeping standing up. That's new. Male, seems to be in his mid-fifties. Nametag says ‘███████.’ A couple old broomsticks, what's left of a mop… Looks like rats have been nesting in here. They've shredded one of his pantlegs, but looks like they didn't touch the sleeper himself. What? You want samples? Eh, sure. Wouldn't be the weirdest thing I've picked up for this job. Okay, I think that's it."
Comparison with File 026-4 revealed the sleeper to be ████ ████████, former janitor in SCP-026. Later analysis of the rat feces revealed [REDACTED]. Recommended future exploration teams wear biohazard gear.
"Here's a classroom. No, no sleepers. Couple of desks intact, the rest looks pretty bad. Looks like someone took a sledgehammer to the place. No, wait, I stand corrected. Baseball bat. It's leaning against the corner. There's about half a case of beer here, full cans. Looks like they left in a hurry. Hey, get the robot to face the board. There's something I want you to see. Looks like Latin to me. Could be significant. Get someone to translate it, it might be a clue to what's gone down here."
The Latin was found to be a series of sentences showing different conjugations of the verb vendo, to sell. All were found in ███████'s Latin Primer, a textbook formerly used by the school. The baseball bat was aluminum, and analysis of the fingerprints was inconclusive.
"Okay, next classroom. Desks look fairly modern. Eighties, I'd guess. Chalkboard's got a quote from Nicholas Nickleby on it. Yes, I'm sure. It says right there on the board. 'The sun does not shine upon this fair earth to meet frowning eyes, depend upon it.' Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens. There's an apple on the desk. Looks fresh. I'm tossing it into the drone. Okay, I'm looking out the window. Hey, are you guys still out there? Because I see kids in the schoolyard. I don't see the van, or any of you. Yeah, second classroom on the right. You see me? Weird."
The apple appeared fresh on the video feed. However, when removed from the samples bin, it was in an advanced state of decomposition. The drone's feed through the window showed the Foundation van on the ground, and the research team looking up at the window. No children were seen in the schoolyard.
"Okay, you want me to head down the hallway? All right. Let's see if I actually make it this time. Not holding out any hopes. Walking forward. It looks ten feet to the next door, which would actually put it in the last room, but who's counting?
"I'm still here. It's just farther than it looks. Feels like I've been walking at least a couple of hours. I'm almost there. I'm just going to take a breather. I—Okay, this is wrong. I've stopped moving, but now I'm going backwards. The hallway's moving past me. Shit, I just saw the door move past me. I'm moving forward again. That's better.
"Okay, I'm almost there. One last dash and I should make it. And I'm back with the robot. I knew it wasn't going to work. There's no way to get there, I'm telling you."
The video feed showed the next door was thirty feet away. The total elapsed time from one door to the next was five minutes, in which time Agent █████ meandered toward the end of the hallway. No anomalous activity was observed while he was standing still. When he neared the end of the hallway, Agent █████ turned around and quickly returned to the beginning of the hallway.
"Okay, I hear you. I've got my eyes closed. I'm walking forward. Left, got it. Going straight. Correcting left again. Correcting right now. Okay, this is going a lot faster. Okay, correcting right. Yes, right, I heard you. Goddamnit, I am going right! Okay, left. No it is not the same direction! Look, if you think it's that easy, just send the robot in."
The robot was able to reach the end of the hallway with no problems. Agent █████ attempted to follow, but was unable to keep a straight line to the end of the hallway.
"Just go ahead and send the bot in. I'm not going to try again until we have a better idea what's in there. Something's keeping me out of there. We should figure out what it is before anything else. Look, if you want to know that badly, go yourself or request some Class Ds. I'm not going in. Deal with it."
At this point the robot opened the door and crossed the threshold into another hallway, running perpendicular to the first, thirty meters in length. No doors were visible. A single window was observed but was situated too high for the view outside to be visible. The walls were free of graffiti. The left was a dead-end, while the right terminated in a left-hand turn. The robot turned right into the new hallway. After ten meters, the unit's GPS showed it to be outside the building, though the video feed still showed the hallway. It continued to the end of the hallway, and turned left. Agent █████ was just ahead, at the beginning of the original hallway. Turning the camera behind the robot showed only the stairwell, with no sign of the second hallway. The unit's GPS showed it by Agent █████'s position at this time.
"I see another classroom. I don't see the robot, though. I lost track after it went through the door. What do you mean it's outside? Did it go out through the window? Look, maybe the GPS is screwy. Calm down. What do you mean turn around? What the hell am I—Oh, fuck! Okay, that's enough. I'm calling it off for the day. We can come back after we get some Class Ds in here."
Note 026-B: Several class D personnel exposed to SCP-026 have disappeared from Foundation control, only to reappear inside the anomalous building. The subjects in question had previously complained of dreams identical to those experienced by Agent Malek.
UPDATE: See Interview Log 026-08.
Interview Log 026-08
Dr. █████: "Please have a seat."
Agent Walker: "Thank you."
Dr. █████: "Let's get down to business. I understand you're requesting a transfer out of fieldwork. Would you like to talk about that?"
Agent Walker: "I'd rather not."
Dr. █████: "It's your choice. However, I can't approve a transfer without reason."
Agent Walker: "Look, I…" The agent paused here. "You've seen my record. You know I worked on twenty-six, right?"
Dr. █████: "I've read the report."
Agent Walker: "I was there the first time we took one of the sleepers out. A lot of them were adults when they disappeared, but they're kids again when we find them. So, I see this sixteen-year-old boy just kind of shrivel away. I had nightmares that night."
Dr. █████: "You're supposed to report any unusual dreams after contacting a potentially mind-altering phenomenon."
Agent Walker: "It hadn't been declared a mindscrew yet. We just thought it was a weird space thing. We were just watching it until the Picnickers got there. And it was a shock, you know? We weren't expecting anything like that. Anyway, I got over it quick enough. I'd seen worse. I once had a guy melt while I was holding onto him."
Dr. █████: "I see. What happened next?"
Agent Walker: "Nothing, for a while. I went in a couple of times, but didn't see anything too weird. But… Look, I know I should have reported it. But one of my buddies had just been disappeared after getting touched by some weird scip, and I didn't want it to happen to me."
Dr. █████: "You've been affected by an SCP?"
Agent Walker: "I… Yeah. It was a week later. I was dozing in the back of the van, and I started dreaming."
Dr. █████: "Can you describe this dream?"
Agent Walker: "Just like the others. You've read the reports, right?"
Dr. █████: "Pretend that I haven't. For the record, Agent Walker."
Agent Walker: "All right. I'm in a classroom. It's just like one of the ones in 026, but new. Not falling apart. I knew the teacher's name. I knew who was sitting by me, even though I'd never seen most of them before. The bell started ringing, but no one moved. I raised my hand, but the teacher didn't notice. Finally, I tried to leave, but the door wouldn't open. Then I noticed something strange with my hand. It had color. Everything else was black and white. But I felt like I was the one who was… wrong? Out of place? That's when I woke up. The van was leaving. No one else noticed I'd been asleep."
Dr. █████: "And you didn't think to report this?"
Agent Walker: "Like I said, I was scared. And this was before they found Malek. I figured it was just another nightmare. Nothing weird. And after Malek had his dream, well, they didn't do anything with him, so I figured it wasn't a big deal."
Dr. █████: "He was put on observation. You should have been as well, for your own safety and for the safety of others."
Agent Walker: "You paper-pushers think it's all so easy, don't you? Sitting behind a desk all day, you don't know what it's like. Well, things aren't so clear out there. Not when you're the one hunting talking cats in a sewer, or waiting to see if you're the one who's not going to come back this time."
Agent Walker was visibly distressed. It was several minutes before she calmed down enough to continue the interview.
Agent Walker: "Anyway, it wasn't until later that we connected the dreams with the sleepers. Not until they found those Class Ds on the second floor. Still, I thought I might be okay. I wasn't actually inside of twenty-six when I dreamed. I wasn't sure until the dreams started."
Dr. █████: "You're having reoccurances?"
Agent Walker: "Yeah. They started six months ago. It's the same dream. But each time, it takes me a little longer to notice it isn't real. And when I look at my hands, they're a little more gray."
End interview 026-08
Note: Agent Walker has since been given a Class A Amnestic and returned to field work.

“Paranoia”

It was on Day 11 that Jack got a message from Robin that sent a chill down his spine. He’d been sitting on the couch at the time, watching some Rick and Morty with Sam curled up asleep in his lap. The little eyeball was as comfortable as could be with Jack gently petting his “head”...and that’s when his phone went off.
Robin: Hey Jack...did you have plans for the Egos that I didn’t know about? Lmao
Jack blinked, staring at the screen. He frowned and typed a message back.
Jack: No...? Only what we’ve talked about, but I thought that wasn’t until next month. Why? Robin: Nice job on the editing practice then. Looks like your Anti skills are improving.
And now Jack was very, very confused.
Jack: What are you talking about? Robin: That last recording you sent me, for Subnautica. It looked great!
Jack sat up straighter, making Sam stir from his sleep, but he barely noticed.
Jack: Robin, I didn’t edit that recording at all. I haven’t recorded anything for Anti in ages. Robin: What are you talking about it? I’m watching it right now. Jack: Send it to me?
A few minutes later, Jack was at his computer with Sam on his shoulder, watching the short clip that Robin had sent him, playing it on a loop. That...wasn’t possible. No. What the hell...?
“...heeeey Reefies!” On-screen Jack was saying. “Aww, I love you guys. Be back soon! Alright, heading to the Deep Down Dark Deep Down. Gotta visit my base, visit my lockers, ‘cause I’m a stupid who forgot all the valuable stuff and left it in a place that takes FUCKIN’ FOREVER TO GET TO! Fuuuuck it so muuuuuch! Heheh...” Video-Jack chuckled at his own reference to Simulacra, and it was at that moment that a shadow appeared, glitching, behind him on screen. Just over his shoulder, against the wall. A familiar face grinned from the shadows, and a high-pitched, distorted laugh played in the recording. The video itself glitched, Jack included. Then Video-Jack shivered, glancing over his shoulder, and the figure - Anti - was gone. It was so quick that he wouldn’t have caught it in his brief skim-through of the recorded footage before he sent it to Robin. And it looked just like all those hints he had dropped in his videos during October before Anti had first shown up in “Say Goodbye”.
Except...except Jack hadn’t recorded that. Jack hadn’t done that. Jack hadn’t...made that face, laughed that laugh. He hadn’t done that...and suddenly he felt very, very scared. Then rationality kicked in and he giggled hysterically, running a hand through his hair.
He was being stupid. He was being dramatic. Obviously Robin had edited this, and was making a joke of it. That bit with Anti...it had to be part of the unused footage from a previous project. It had to be. He shook his phone free from his hoodie pocket and tapped out a shaky text.
Jack: Haha, very funny. You got me! I was actually scared there for a second! Jack: You’re such a troll lol
But Robin’s next message didn’t make him feel any better.
Robin: Man I’m not trolling you. I thought you edited that?
Jack could barely keep his hands from shaking as he tried to respond. He swallowed thickly, a dull fear washing over him.
Jack: No, I didn’t. That...I never did that. Unless I’ve learned to edit in my sleep I have no idea how that got into the video
Unless...
“Belief. I’m talking about belief....and how it can do amazing, impossible things...”
The words Mark had spoken to him a few days prior were bouncing around in his head again, echoing and repeating and playing on loop. Mark had been about to tell him something, before the call had ended. Something about belief. Something about Sam, but kind of not. Something that he didn’t get to finish saying because...he swallowed, both hands clutching at his hair as he sank in his desk chair.
Because the call had started to flood with static, and then his phone had shocked him. Which he wasn’t even aware a smartphone could do, not when it was mostly unharmed like Jack’s was.
Another buzz from his phone alerted him to another message from Robin.
Robin: Wait, so you didn’t put that bit with Anti in the other video either?
Jack scrambled to pick up his phone, fumbling with it for a moment.
Jack: What video? Robin: The upload from this morning, the first one. The “Reading Your Comments” video. Robin: You were answering some question about the egos...? I thought you were just messing with the community so I left it in. Robin: But when I saw the second one in the Subnautica recording you sent me I thought I should ask.
Jack rapidly pulled up the video on his computer, scrubbing through it until he found the question Robin was talking about, because he already knew which one it was. He’d responded with something totally off-topic, something unrelated, just to be funny...and sure enough, as Video-Jack was reading the question aloud, there was a little visual distortion. Not much, but if you were looking for it, you’d see it. And way in the background, in the shadows in the corner...a silhouette. Brief. Barely there. A fraction of a second. A few frames, maybe. And it knocked all of Jack’s breath from him.
“Jack? Are you okay?”
Sam had bounced onto the desk, into Jack’s line of sight, and the little eyeball was eyeing him with a look of innocent concern. Jack took a breath. Then another. He forced a smile.
“Y-Yeah. Yeah, o’ course. Fine.”
“You’re scared.”
“...a little,” Jack admitted sheepishly. Sam could always read him, better than anyone. Having a mental link probably had something to do with it. “Sorry bud. I didn’t mean ta scare you.”
“Why are you scared?”
Jack had no answer for him, not really. He couldn’t think of a way to say it. So instead he thought it. He pictured Anti, pictured the videos he’d made with him. And he let his fear seep through...just a little. Enough for Sam to get the idea. And Sam...his pupil widened a little and he squeaked.
“He’s real too?”
“I dunno,” Jack shrugged, sinking further in his seat. He leaned forward, propping his elbow on the desk and burying his face in his hands, reverting to thinking from here on out. ‘I dunno. It sounds stupid, sounds impossible. But...I dunno how else he’s showing up in videos, unless Robin’s lying. And I don’t think he would. Not this far.’
Sam made a worried little noise and nudged Jack’s arm, nuzzling up against his hoodie sleeve. Trying to help. And it did, a little...because Jack managed to smile.
“C’mon, c’mon...” Jack was muttering at his phone and pacing, as though urging it on would somehow will the person on the other end to pick up the phone any faster. It was taking far too long. It was only as he finally heard someone on the line that it occurred to him what time it was in California.
“...h’lo?”
Jack winced, hearing the sleepiness in Mark’s voice, knowing he must have woken him up.
“Mark. Hi. God, sorry, I totally forgot what time it was over there...”
“Yeah, it’s...” There was a rustle of fabric, a muffled grumble. “...three in the fuckin’ morning.”
“Sorry. Shite. I didn’t think, I just called...I can...I can call back later...”
“Woah, wait, no, ‘s cool,” Mark mumbled. There was more movement on the other end, a light clicking on, a door opening and closing. A yawn. “Wassup?”
“...”
And now that he was actually talking to Mark, Jack began to realize how stupid he would sound the minute he opened his mouth.
“...Seán?”
It’s...nothin’. Nevermind. I shouldn’t’ve called.” The words spilled out of him faster than he could think them, a hand dragging through his already-unkempt hair. Sam made a little noise of question from where he was sitting on the arm of the couch.
“Dude you sound like you saw a ghost.” Jack could hear the worried frown in his words. “Hold up, once sec...”
The call ended abruptly, but as soon as it had gone Jack’s phone was ringing again, this time for a Skype call. Jack sighed and answered it. His screen lit up with the rather sleepy-looking face of Mark, his hair a chaotic mess of bedhead and his mouth pulled down in a worried frown. Jack could only imagine how he looked himself. He’d been running his hands through his hair nonstop since he’d woken up, he’d had four cups of coffee, and he’d been jumping at shadows all morning. Mark blinked.
“Holy shit. You look like hell.”
Jack rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, thanks, I kinda figured that,” he grumbled, looking away for a moment.
“Are you okay? You seem...stressed. I’ve seen it in your videos too...”
Jack let a small, hysterical laugh bubble past his lips.
"I'm fine! Toootally great!” He said sarcastically. “I'm being held together by coffee and redbull and cookies and prayers! What could possibly be wrong?!"
“Jesus.” Mark stared at him like he was nuts. “The hell happened to you?”
And Jack just let out a slow breath, deflating.
“...just...a lot. Recently.”
“Is it Sam still?”
Jack didn’t even feel annoyed this time when Mark mentioned it, just sighing resignedly.
“...sort of. I mean that’s part of it, sure, but...” He trailed off, chewing his lip. Wondering if this was even a good idea in the first place.
“But what?” Mark asked. Jack looked at his screen again to see Mark sitting on a couch now, a soft light illuminating his tired features. Would Mark think he was fretting over nothing? Mark had his own dark persona on the internet, Darkiplier, and Jack was certain he was aware of Antisepticeye. But thinking that Anti was a real, living thing...or whatever Anti’s version of “living” would be...
“Jack?” Mark’s brow furrowed in concern.
“...I...eh...” Jack stared at his screen for another long moment. Then he sighed. “...I’m bein’ paranoid. That’s all.”
“Paranoid about what...?”
“Anti.”
A pause.
“...you mean, like, Evil-You? That Anti?”
“Yeah. That Anti. He...” Another pause, another sigh, a huff of frustration. Jack, running his hands through his hair for the umpteenth time. “...he’s shown up in a few o’ my videos, an’ I didn’t put ‘im there. I didn’t record stuff for it. I didn’t tell Robin to do it, an’ Robin claims he thought I was editing it like that. And I keep...I keep thinking he’s right behind me, right over my shoulder. And I started thinkin’ about what you were saying about “belief” before and I started to think it might be possible and I wanted to call you and ask and – you...probably think I’m absolutely off my rocker.” Jack flopped back onto the couch, his head thunking back against the wall behind it. He closed his eyes, expression strained. God, he sounded insane. Sam slipped off the armrest to snuggle up in Jack’s lap, out of sight of the camera. Trying to make him feel better.
“...would you call me crazy if I said I believed you?”
And just like that, Jack’s eyes were glued to the screen again, where he could see Mark avoiding looking at the camera, rubbing a hand over his mouth. Looking concerned.
“You’re joking.”
“Not...not this time, no.”
There was a seriousness to his tone that Jack wasn’t used to, that made him think maybe Mark really did mean what he was saying.
“Why?”
“Why do I believe you?” Mark asked, finally looking up to the camera. “Because I think–”
There was an odd, glitched distortion on the screen, the lighting around Mark changing and shifting for a brief, almost unnoticeable moment....and judging by the slight widening of Mark’s eyes and the way Jack gasped softly, they both knew that the other had just seen the same thing.
“...I think...I can’t talk about it. Not now. Not...” Mark glanced over his shoulder, his eyes landing on something off-screen, something near the ground. “You alright? It’s okay, I promise. I’m right here.” The camera’s angle changed, going lopsided as Mark leaned over to reach toward whatever was on the floor. Jack assumed it was probably his dog, Chica. Poor pup. He smiled softly in sympathy. Then Mark was back in the frame, and he looked a little strained.
“Look. I can’t...talk about it over the phone. Obviously he doesn’t want you knowing. But I’ll be in Europe for a tour soon. A few weeks from now. Just...hold out ‘till then, and we can talk then. I’ll stop by, or we can meet up–”
“Wait, who?” Jack interrupted, frowning. A minute fear seemed to build in his chest, a tension there that hadn’t been there before, and he found himself glancing over his shoulder despite the fact that it was broad daylight and he was sitting against a wall. Sam made a quiet noise of distress and cuddled closer to him, looking up at him. Jack’s free, shaking hand fell to his lap to pet the little eyeball. “Who doesn’t want me to know what?”
“Later,” Mark insisted. “Not now. It’s not safe.”
“Why?!”
“Later!”
And Mark hung up. Jack tried, twice, to call him again - but both times Mark ignored him. He gritted his teeth and held Sam a little closer, suddenly scared to be alone.
[A/N] I swear, when I began this story, this was not the direction I was planning on taking it. It was going to be a cute little fluff-friendship piece with Sam thrown into the mix, then...the story took on a mind of its own. So even I don’t know where it’d headed...but I promise there will be cutes ahead as well. That, at the very least, is still a part of the plan. <3

Raza: This definitional issue of, I mean ,who is liberal and what is right and what is left-that depends on the perspective ..from a very mainstream version perhaps the CNN, Nytimes, considered liberal. But then look at some of the positions they take and some of the ..You know my problem with these definitions is that what lesson you can definitely learn from all that media, despite challenges ..all that, you now-first of all there, all the greater range of opinions and coverage which is given ahh.. at least in Pakistan. We carry out a very diverse set of opinions on same page. It’s not just the liberal bias or the cons bias. If u take case of mass media here, it’s liberal in certain ways in certain issue and not so liberal in others. For example, universal health care considered a radical idea, Is itself outrageous in my opinion
                                                                                                                                                                                                 [1:23]
How can state tell its people you can’t have primary health care. It is (perceived as) a liberal plot against great capitalist order.  Fact that millions still out of insurance net, therefore nearly 40million people born in America, world richest country,  highest in defense spending more than eurporan advanced countries put together.  Is unacceptable and that fact that mainstream liberals not talk about this issue enough to inform public  opinion is also outrageous and therefore a problem in my view. And they were talking about this in 2016 elections  you know there is also this internal factor. that Bernie Sanders in the first six months of 2016 received seconds of coverage on mainstream tv, 37 seconds to be precise asopposed to hours and weeks of trump.                                                                                                         [2:40]
And now liberal vs Trump is doing that..well hello you used Trump for sensationalism and rating and normalizing bigotry and now pay for it, in my view (laughs)so thing here is that I feel this bias is in a certain range that liberal issues exist. I mean take issue of climate change, oil and gas exploration in north Dakota where hundreds and thousands of people were protesting against the pipeline that is going to alter and destroy the environment and disrupt local people-this did not get a mention until I think some top leader-in fact there is a good article I urge you to check on Fair.org which is media criticism website. They posted it in 2016 they looked at washingon post coverages. there were at least 30 stories negative stories  about Sanders in 40 article that he is unreasonable he is illogical, impractical  he has no plan, how he is going to fund this . so, already(did media portrayals), I mean..Sanders is hardly a radical compared to local standards... He is what you call  ethical democrat.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             [4:44]
(voice tone raised) And you know, compared to the real left, argues all he says is don’t make your students incur 1.3 trillion debt . Its bigger than the housing debt in America. Why should a student in 20s go out of college with 30,40thousands of dollar debt? i think, it’s shocking. And I think mainstream media fails to highlight this issue and change public opinion. And it was not the case I believe it’s a recent development of the last 3 or 4 decades. Public education, higher education used to be highly subsidized. And so it should be in civilized societies. You can’t let people die bcz they don’t have health insurance. You can’t let people be hopeless just because you don’t have anti poverty schemes or let them on streets bcz o mental health bcz u shut all the institutions. It’s the neoliberal order not only in America and I mean it’s everywhere. It’s happening in Europe and other countries due to privatizations and all that. I feel here the mainstream media fails and it needs to pull up and act together. Corporate lobbies of the status quo own the media so there is to a certain degree reporters and editors will go otherwise they will be fired.                                                                                                                                             [6:34]

Raza: Pakistan; experience is not all too different from Turkish experience. I think, ahh, Pakistan and turkey share a lot of similarities most important one being the role of military which is overarching an historically very strong and ahh definitely changed and made some progress in that direction in Pakistan, you cannot challenge or criticize the military very openly that becomes a big problem you are declared anti state, traitor or treasonous person-that’sone of the red lines historically in Pakistan. Pakistan is a country ruled for more than half its lifetime by the military, directly. Although things have changed in the last decade, the media has been deregulated, print media, channels’ expansion. but those red lines persist, another red line is that you cannot criticize the religion but also the religious extremists because they have so much political and social power and they have been hand in glove with the state as well so if you criticize them it means u invite trouble                                                                     [1:31]
I remember when I joined the magazine I mentioned I worked for my publisher told me ‘nothing on sex, nothing on religion, nothing n military’ and delete everything which is (laughs). So that was it. But now it’s a democracy in the country and I keep on checking, every evening, the first and last page to check content for anti state institutions is any article radical. That’s totally different than what I used to enjoy like language editing. Now its like check check check-all redlines are intact and maintained.so that’s the general historical context. There were improvements since 2008 when democracy returned in Pakistan. That’s the time when I started engaging more with media when Musharaf was ousted through a popular protest In Pakistan. Civilian spaces opened up and television was far more critical and had diversity and variety of views both on national and international views and one felt it was a great time to be a media person. That’s one of the reasons for why I became a media person and a journalist because I was very encouraged with the environment the idea of changing the world and public opinion etc that you muster and live with(gentle laugh)                                                                                                                                               [3:32]
But things have not been so effective because of the last 2 or 3 years. Media freedom has been curbed, attacked. You know media channels which have been critical of lets say military establishment or military’s involvement in politics were cut... But interesting thing is, it is not like the traditional censorship that used to take place in coup times. It’s almost a sophisticated manipulation through a variety of instruments like financial support to media houses, targeted government ads, selecting and targeting certain journalists saying this one is not good, this one should be out etc. since last year this has become really really difficult and then the parallel censorship has been occurring in the digital spaces. We live in a digital and age and we have more than 35% of our population online. Number of people on cellular interne ti s close to 70m people. It’s a big no so state actually passed a law to curtail certain digital freedoms.                                                                                                                                     [5:08]
Last year 4 bloggers were picked up and detained and went missing for weeks. Latter found out they were taken by law enforcement agencies because they were critical of the military and one by one they had to leave the country. People have been arrested for posting on facebook critical of the military. You know its not just Pakistan, its south Asia, like in India. If someone criticizes Indian PM, he is jailed. In Bangladesh there are many people still in jail who were critical of the PM. So it’s a crazy time, crazy moment we are in.                                                                                                                                                             [6:17]

Raza: See we live in a language of global terror. We don’t have definition of terror. There is no global understanding for such a common term that is used. And now we are living in fake media, fake journalist, fake liberal, fake this and these words matter because in our home country if u go through social media, our current ruling part PM sportsman turned gained power he is (depicted as) strong man with strongest of delivering goods to the people and he and his ministers have been using similar words fake media, fake journalism, fake press and its kind of globalization of language which is kind of anti press, anti media freedoms in essence.                                                                                                                  [ 1:14]
I think this is a worrying moment and is linked to toher things. US leadership in global affairs declined be it climate change or other important issues that face all of us and remember we are no longer living in the isolated world of 19th century or early 20th century everything is interconnected these days. Climate being the greatest of proofs but we hear its a hoax, fake news (laughs). So that’s the problem we face from the current situation of the US but as Maher optimistically says that things change but it may not be case for the future what we need to remember is the damage that will be done in next few years or the decade is going to be immense because as the world including the US the kind of advances they make kind of progressive restructuring of society that has been taking place-that has been rolled back bit by bit whether it be immigration issue, or even  normalization of racism you know which the US society fought so hard to undue for decades so that is being lost. The real impact on the global I mean its very (?) as well. I mean what you read about , the kind of language that is used in the media of unthinkingly and that (?) risk is caused.                                                                                                                     [3:12]
. is it really healthy for US or world, I don’t think so . and I think that is where journalists and media have a perhaps far greater role today to highlight this expose this but also challenge it without thinking we cannot take sides and remain neutral. How can you remain neutral when you are reporting on racist neo-Nazi wanting t eliminate a certain group of people. you can’t be neutral in that stage, right, or for that matter any other debate, as a reporter, commentator you come across, you have to speak up.  [4:10]

Cape Town Art Fair Questionnaire
1.
The Goodman Booth was very different to the Gallery space. In the gallery space the work is all spaced out and all work similar in visual aesthetic with some walls painted black. While in the booth all the work differs in medium and are placed very close together. In the booth I recognized work by Yinka Shonibare and Kendell Geers.
Blank Projects gallery space is very spatious with work of a minimal aesthetic and focus on metals. In the Blank Booth there is a range of materials which are all crowded into the space. The only correlation between the two spaces would be the white walls and each space having a metal work/s. I recognized work by Igshaan Adams and Gallerist Tyra Naidoo.
The two Stevenson Gallery/booth spaces were very similar in visual aesthetic. Both spaces focused on large wall work. Both spaces have sculptural elements to them. However the wall colour of Stevenson Gallery differs to that of the white booth at the art fair. I recognized work by Kemang Wa Lehulere.
 2. I ENJOYED:
Stephen Allwright
‘Fluid’
Ink, graphite, crayon, pencil and water colour on paper
2018
Initially I was drawn to this work purely for the sunflowers. However when further admiring the piece I started to love it more. I love the muted tones of the yellow paired with the dull pink of the man’s underwear. I really enjoy the way in which the character is drawn, his form is almost organic, and matching the shape of the chair he is lounging on. I am also very attracted to the repetition of texture in sunflowers, facial and arm hair, creating depth and shadow.
 Chris Soal
‘Kids see ghosts sometimes’
Toothpicks in polyurethane on industrial fabric
2018
This piece sparks a great amount of my interest. It pretends to be something it is not, which I am somewhat drawn to. From far this hanging piece seems to be a soft flowing fabric draped onto the wall to the floor. However when approaching the work it is evident it is actually quite the hazardous piece. Thousands of toothpicks stick out at the viewer, causing some discomfort to some. I really enjoy the texture created by the toothpicks and how it creates a movement.
Carolyn Parton
‘Notes on the wind’
Reconstituted paint strata
2018
What I enjoy most about this work by Carolyn Parton is the use of materials and colour palette. The piece has a great sense of movement due to all of the intertwining and swirling of the materials. I also enjoy the sculptural aspect of the work.
 I DID NOT ENJOY:
Ndikhumbule Ngqinambi
‘The masters unexplored library’
oil on canvas
2019
I do not enjoy the amount of greyness within this painted artwork. I believe that if one is going to resort back to being traditional and working with Oil on canvas, there should be something done different. However I find this piece to be very mundane and no different to any oil painting I have seen.
 David Koloane
‘Untitled (assemblage II)’
mixed media on canvas
1990s
In this artwork I di not like the materials used. I also question why it ha to be done on a canvas and not taken off the canvas and become some sort of sculptural work. The colours are also all very similar, blurring together becoming somewhat muddy.
 LR Vandy
‘Crimson and Black’
Hull
2019
I enjoy work that contains some type of textural aspect, however I do not feel like this artwork is complete. I do not enjoy the shapes created and find it to be oddly shaped.
 3. Many of the works are done in acrylic/oil paint. However there is a dominating presence of mixed media/ materiality based work in the fair. Many works use a minimum of two different mediums and are combined to create one piece, example; some work has fabric mixed with painting and sewing. There is also a great deal of works that use found objects. However, the one dominating medium used either primarily or secondarily is paint.
 4. The booths this year did not differ too greatly when referring to different colours, only when it was solo exhibits was it any different. The works are curated different in each booth, changing wall colours and spacing of work. Many booths keep their furniture simple with just a table and chair, while one or two booths had an exotic couch and furniture for the curators to lounge on. Some booths have many small works climbing and covering th wall, while some galleries chose to put one or two small works on a wall or one larger one.
 5. The labels were almost different for every booth. Here are the ways I noticed labelling:
·         Standard double sided tape labels onto the wall
·         Writing directly onto the wall and underlining it
·         Using stickers that are transparent
·         Written on paper placed into the floor
·         Instagram name instead of artist name
·         Labels not directly next to artworks but scattered around the booth
  6. The fair is organized to be a great never ending maze. However the booths are positioned in a way that transitioning booth to booth feels natural/ organic. There two or three ‘main’ walkways that lead directly to the back of the building, however due to open gallery booths everything simply bleeds together. Around every corner is art and even more art. The booths are structured in a way that if you walk around multiple times you could see something different every time; almost as if it’s a treasure hunt for art and sanity.
 7. The lighting this art fair was not done very well. Many of the works had glares and those that didn’t have glass were lucky. The light is however mainly focused in the booths, not so much the pathways. I felt the lighting felt more natural this year. There was no specific lights pointing out and at specific work. There was no one work that demanded more attention than the one next to it.
 8. As predicted a good amount of the people walking around were men in suits with their high-heeled wives on their arm. However there was a lot of differently dressed people. Many people were dressed fluidly, disregarding gender. Also many of the people seemed younger and on trend. There was no person who was standing out due to their fashion choice… Besides the man who wore a blue Hawaiian shirt which matched his blue crocs... Iconic.
 9. There’s a definite target market for people of many industries and tourists, but predominantly to those interested in Contemporary art. This is shown through the multiple stands found to the left and back of the convention Centre. There is fresh meals and wine available, promoting a target at so called ‘foodies’. It also attracts the market of book collectors. Many books are sold, example; Art Times, and someone who is interested in collecting these books can do so here. There is also some clothing attracting people wanting to have trendy/ limited edition printed clothing.
 10.
Paola PIVI
Untitled (Leopard)
Photographic print, dibond, frame
I believe this to be a spectacle of wealth. Many wealthy Northern-Africans flaunt their purchased leopards and other wild animals while in the desert. However this also heavily links to a picture of American rapper, Tyga, who posted an Instagram image of himself posing with a pile of money and a leopard while on a jet. Rapper, Carbi B also flexes a leopard in her music video for her break out song ‘Bodak yellow’. Therefore I think the leopard has been commodified t a symbol of wealth.
 11.
Ande Stead
‘Life’
Hand forged stainless steel on granite base
To me this does not fit in the art fair. I think the theme dealt with could have been approached very differently and the specific way he approached it is overdone. I also feel like if the artist wanted to do something that has been done a multitude of times, they should consider size, placement, and other possible conceptual titles for the piece.
 12. Being second year I found more confidence to ask curators and gallerist’s questions. I spoke to many of the curators however the response differed with each. Some were more accommodating to my questions and curiosities, while one or two denied telling me prices.
 13. I did not notice any major branding besides Investec, but that could have just been my poor eyesight. This targets anyone who does banking and targets a wide range of people. This could be a sponsor because they may want to show that the Bank is interested in many industries, including Contemporary art, showing inclusivity in their brand. The fair would be a good place to target masses of people, both foreign and local.
 14. The convention center is a good place to hold this massive events as many other events occur in this space too, such as; seminars, design indabas and other large scale conventions.  The space is large and can accommodate large amounts of people. It is also very close to the city center and many other tourist attractions.
 15.
Albert Newall
‘Untitled’
Watercolour and ink on Paper
1952
 16. Smith Gallery was showing a large amount of Michaelis Graduate student works. One of the graduates showing, who was gaining a lot of attention, is Talia Ramkilawan.
 17. The Solo Booths are much stronger conceptualized booths than those of shared booths. The booth will be a coherent space. The curation of the booth will emphasize the work creating a distinct aesthetic and visual for the solo artist.
 18. One of the big names of the art fair was Georgina Gratrix. Her work has a very strong aesthetic and a specific process of creating which is visible. Many work seen in the art fair has similar motifs which Gratrix uses, showing she has influence in the market.
Although she only had one work up, I heard may people mumbling over an artwork by Marina Abramovic. The level of art she creates and her status level within the industry always brings even more attention to her artworks.
 19. There were many works that resembled map-like visuals. Along with this many works dealt with themes of memory and capturing time. However it’s impossible to neglect the fact that majority of the work dealt with identity and the ‘self’.
 20. As a young artist right now I would love to be represented by Smith Gallery. It seems to be a good and open minded gallery space, as it exhibits many graduates at the art fair. However I would love to be represented by Smac Gallery. The Smac both had a wide range of mediums and subject matters, showing they are diverse and possibly always looking for new talent.
 21. I would also love to work for Smith. I would love the opportunity to work with young artists in the industry. If I worked for them I would want to be involved in every aspect of the Gallery.
 22. Curious as to why so many booths had their storage space open for the public to view.
 23. Yes. The space would have minimal emphasis on the furniture, and more emphasis on curation. I would want very similar works to be shown (possibly even a solo show) and have the whole booth transformed by changing the colours and lights. The space should be organic and one simple path to follow, nothing hidden behind walls.

Wendy White
Wendy White, an American artist, is famous for producing aesthetically pleasing contemporary artworks with a hidden strong meanings.
During her lecture, she described her practice, influences, and interests by going through specific artworks she has done over the past years. When defining her artistic practice, she explains that she has a liberal idea of what art should be, in fact she claims that it is all about connotations of materials. She is taught that depiction was illustration and that there is a deeper meaning of combination of a materials, and to obsess over quality.
She describes her work as being positive however it has reasons for doubt and she tries to include that paradox in order to tell real stories occasionally being “tongue and cheek”. Her recent sculptures connote symbols of optimism presented as clean ideal gestures and she looks into symbols that resembles images found from weather apps to instagram buttons to emojis. Such as using black cloud icons, pixel hearts, and rainbows.
Additionally, she likes creating randomness like uninvited marks on the walls, and makes tweaks to her artworks over time. “I hate things ending, I want paintings to drift off into an illusion of space, to not end or finish abruptly” She prefers the Brooklyn bridge over the Manhattan bridge because it looks as if it is trailing off into the sky. She likes challenging space, because it doesn’t just have a defined space or end like shapes. This is inspiring because she has taught me to view things in a different way where things do not have to seem confined on materials I use like paper. She has changed my viewpoint on art by empowering me with the knowledge that art is like freedom, there is nothing holding it back, it doesn’t need a finishing point. This reminds me of the quote taken from the video on Edward Said called Framed: The Politics of Stereotypes in News: “How does it feel to be fixed, captured, framed?” The similarity is obvious between Said and White here, White doesn’t want to feel limited and trapped in her artworks and wants it to never end, it is the same concept when Said reminds us when we are reading the media. He suggest we make the implicit explicit and not be fooled from what the media feeds us and it is up to ourselves to discover the real truth. This also reinforces White’s idea of the use of symbols and materials with connotational meaning, in order to us to see the deep truth behind her artworks.
Car culture has always played a big influence in her theme of work for the last couple of years. According to her: “Cars themselves used to be time capsules” which links to how she got this interest and inspiration of cars from her father who was into them. When she was young she would experience her dad always working on car projects in the garage independently most of the time. She identified his work as “sculptures”. Also, she found retro stuff really trend based and she wanted to incorporate this gesture into her artworks. So she started looking at sticker use which she incorporated into her car interest. She would take series of photos of stickers stuck densely onto parts of cars most of the time on the windows, in order to produce a satisfaction of polarizing and personalizing the object and making her own personal story out of it. In her lecture she stated “women were always the prop or prize for car ownership but rarely the drivers”. Being a feminist with an obsession with cars, she incorporates these two inspiring stimulators which made her cut up sexist ads found in car magazines to make collages. She has a firm belief that “Men ruins things, and they make sure there are laws set in place for preventing women to do all the stuff they can do”. Therefore cars played a huge role into her retro phase and developing her feminist personality. This reminds me of Stuart Hall because he focused his interest into mass culture where he explored at the influence of mainstream media in gender, race, ethnicity, class, and religion. In the video he described one of the problems with mass culture is the male dominated society on gender’s ideas, he therefore went on about how although some people agree with these views, some were unsure, and others like Wendy White disagreed with these ideologies completely. Some people portrayed opposition to this through protests and bloggers on social media, and here White does it through her artworks. White, also interested in graffiti work which links to her retro style, is very similar to another feminist artist, Ana Mendieta, who was a part of the second-wave feminist movement where she created a graffiti artwork called: “Blood Writing” created with this dripping bright red paint resembling blood which showed this text: “SHE GOT LOVE”. This piece has a central focus on the violence issued on women. “Love” connotes the action of sex and the paint signifies the violence which dedicates this piece on rape culture. Like White, she incorporates texts and these symbols (fake blood) in order to convey the deep inner meaning of an artwork.
Taking on an interest in connotational materials, she uses symbols sometimes emoji-like to connote personal meanings through her artwork for example the black cloud. It was this emoji like symbol which came from her piece: Santa Cruz, which was made in summer 2016. The black cloud symbolizes escape, optimism and a longing for innocence. It was about the dark side (hence the color black) of the American small town life that she grew up in, teenage dreams and adult let downs. I find her use of materials to be very inspiring and clever in order to convey such a strong personal meaning through minimalistic and simplified symbols / objects. The video: Whitewashing: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has got me pondering on where, why, how and who decided colors were set to their specific connotations. In the video, Oliver reinforces the idea of Hollywood Whitewashing and its existence in the modern day. For example, in 2016 the academy awards’ nominees were all very white for both men and women, some say this is due to the fact that Hollywood isn’t giving enough good roles to the darker skinned actors and actresses, others say the reason is because Hollywood prefers white over darker skin for example in the movie the Prince of Persia, a white actor, Jake Gyllenhaal, is playing the role of the Prince who should have darker skin, and a white blonde actress named Emma Stone casted into the movie Aloha, who played a character who is meant to be half asian. Both of these actors didn’t have any edits to their appearances to even make them look like their characters. This is similar to the CNN Concatenated video, where we see white reporters only for one of the most popular news reporting channels available. Not only has this been a modern problem but this has occurred over history on screen like in past movies such as in the Conquerer, John Wayne plays Genghis Khan and in West Side Story, Natalie Wood as Maria, etc. According to the site https://www.bourncreative.com/meaning-of-the-color-black/ the color black connotes negativity, fear, death, evil, gloominess, etc. whereas white connotes positivity, purity, goodness, safety, cleanliness, perfection, innocence, etc. Therefore just from comparing these connotations, I can’t help but notice the similarity to racist stereotypes of skin color. Why is black chosen to be negative and white as positive? This brings into perspective of the Guardian’s article: There is no such thing as western civilisation, where the concept of the Golden Nugget is explained. It is where in the western culture, ideologies becomes the “norms” where it is the traditional views. These ideologies could incorporate race, nationality, religion, culture and gender. Every belief passed down from generations, which causes the labelling of people’s identities. This relates to the the black and white color connotations, because in the past of the western culture, white was the predominant color whereas black was the inferior one. Therefore these connotations seemed to be derived through the Golden Nugget concept.
By trying to be concrete but not literal, she decided to explore texts use. Texts became a way of architecture. She uses the word itself as both form and context. Several things that influenced her to display texts in her work is from the vibe of Chinatown, it’s signs and Steven Rendall’s book: Practice of Everyday Life Chapter of Walking in the City. Cities like Chinatown seem to have their own secrets, this fascinated her that she took pictures just to look at the signage signs and to explore and compare how they have developed or faded and what parts were town down or remained. Not only did the architecture excited her but also the body language of the people there, how they walked, posed and leaned on the exciting chinatown architecture. She goes on to explain the importance of body language by describing how boring Jackson Pollock’s work is unless there were people standing in front of it which made it seem alive and much more interesting.  This fascination of space of abstraction was activated by figures, humans with the essential to move around and that there was no such thing as scale so she thought about how architecture can be dominating and comforting at the same time like how on the street, pedestrians and building facades interact in the same way. This is what pushed her to realize that photographs themselves were the anchor to what she was looking for, she believes that it is the real thing that has its own set of perimeters that pushes paintings into another space, an atmosphere of tangible space that buildings occupy which lead her to create a series named Photobuilts.

7 Tips for Structured Data on E-commerce Sites
BEFORE READING: If you’re unfamiliar with JSON-LD, check out this article to learn more about the structured data format and why we prefer it. Overall, JSON-LD is much more flexible and scalable in comparison to microdata. Rather than having to add and edit microdata spread throughout the HTML of a page, you can add and edit JSON-LD in one place, wherever it’s pasted in the HTML.
While compiling recommendations for structured data for a client, many questions came up. After looking through countless articles on schema markup for e-commerce and going knee-deep into Schema.org, I still came up short when trying to find answers to my questions. Whether you’re working on implementing structured data for your own e-commerce site or a client’s site, here are 7 things that will help you along your journey.
1. When in doubt, test it out. Test and discover structured data opportunities with Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool
If you’re unsure whether your structured data is valid or is free from errors, use Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool. It can confirm whether Google sees the markup on a page. If you’re missing any recommended (displayed as “warnings”) or required values (displayed as “errors”) as part of the structured data type, Google will tell you so. Additionally, the tool will report any syntax errors in your code.
Another great aspect of the testing tool is the ability to view the structured data used on competitor sites. This can be great if you’re unsure where to start or what schema types are relevant for your e-commerce pages. You can even learn from their errors and warnings.
2. Add structured data to your site based on templates
Whether you’re the one adding structured data to your e-commerce site or the one making recommendations, it can be overwhelming to think about all the schema markup needed across the many pages of your site. Rather than thinking about this page by page, approach it from a template level: product categories, products, contact, about, and so on. Also include a universal template, that is, structured data that would appear on all pages (such as BreadcrumbList).
Delivering templated structured data to a client or your team can also aid in communication with developers and make it easier to implement changes.
3. Do you need to add review markup?
We often come across clients that use third-party apps to collect and display product reviews. We get a lot of questions about review markup and whether to include it as part of their product markup. Review markup should always be included in your product markup as it is a recommended field. But do you need to add it yourself? Here’s a visual to help answer that question.
4. Use “reviewBody” to markup review text in Review
When taking a look at the examples included at the bottom of Schema.org’s Review schema, one example review markup uses “description” and the other uses “reviewBody”. They both appear to be review text. So, which one should you use?
I would recommend using “reviewBody” for review text as it is a property of Review, whereas “description” is a property of Thing. The description for “reviewBody” (“The actual body of the review”) seems to fit review text more closely than “description” (“A description of the item”). Furthermore, when comparing with Google Developers’ guide on review snippets, they used “reviewBody” for the body of a review.
5. Use product markup on product category pages
Category pages can include products, yet it’s not quite a product page. About two years ago, Distilled, using an SEO split test conducted on our ODN platform, experienced positive results when including Product schema on e-commerce category pages. Unlike product schema on a product page, we omitted links to individual product pages when including the markup on category pages. This is in line with Google’s structured data policy on multiple elements on a page:
“A category page listing several different products (or recipes, videos, or any other type). Each entity should be marked up using the relevant schema.org type, such as schema.org/Product for product category pages. However, if one item is marked, all items should be marked. Also, unless this is a carousel page, the marked items should not link out to separate details pages.”
See the next tip on how to include markup for multiple products on a category page.
6. Use @graph for pages with multiple schema types
Are you using multiple structured data types on a single page? Instead of using numerous <script> tags, use one and place all your structured data types inside of a @graph object.
Example:
Before (two <script> tags):
After (using @graph):
7. Use a free online JSON editor
A tool that a colleague recommended to me was JSON Editor Online. You don’t have to sweat it if you don’t have a source code editor downloaded. Just use this tool to make sure your JSON-LD code is valid and correctly indented with tabs, not spaces of course ;) The tool is also quick to tell you when you have errors in your code so that you can fix the error in the tool sooner, rather than later when you validate the structured data using a tool like Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool. Another great thing about using an editor tool such as this one is that it is free of weird formatting issues that can occur in word processors such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Speaking from my own experiences (before I made the switch to use a JSON editor): when creating structured data in document files and then pasting the code to test in Google’s Structured Data Testing tool, the formatting remained intact. As such, I kept getting this error message, “Missing '}' or object member name.” Looking through the JSON-LD, I was unable to locate where the missing “}” would go or any other missing character for that matter. It turns out that copying and pasting code from a doc file with the formatting intact caused my quotation marks to look funny in the testing tool, like italicized or in a different font. Rather than wasting more time by fixing the weird quotation marks, I switched to using a JSON editor when creating structured data. No more wonky formatting issues!
