Elizabeth Warren on weaponized budget models
Tumblr media
In yesterday’s essay, I broke down the new series from The American Prospect on the hidden ideology and power of budget models, these being complex statistical systems for weighing legislative proposals to determine if they are “economically sound.” The assumptions baked into these models are intensely political, and, like all dirty political actors, the model-makers claim they are “empirical” while their adversaries are “doing politics”:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/03/all-models-are-wrong/#some-are-useful
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/04/cbo-says-no/#wealth-tax
Today edition of the Prospect continues the series with an essay by Elizabeth Warren, describing how her proposal for universal child care was defeated by the incoherent, deeply political assumptions of the Congressional Budget Office’s model, blocking an important and popular policy simply because “computer says no”:
https://prospect.org/economy/2023-04-04-policymakers-fight-losing-battle-models/
When the Build Back Better bill was first mooted, it included a promise of universal, federally funded childcare. This was excised from the final language of the bill (renamed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill), because the CBO said it would cost too much: $381.5b over ten years.
This is a completely nonsensical number, and the way that CBO arrived at it is illuminating, throwing the ideology of CBO modeling into stark relief. You see, the price tag for universal childcare did not include the benefits of childcare!
As Warren points out, this is not how investment works. No business leader assesses their capital expenditures without thinking of the dividends from those investments. No firm decides whether to open a new store by estimating the rent and salaries and ignoring the sales it will generate. Any business that operates on that basis would never invest in anything.
Universal childcare produces enormous dividends. Kids who have access to high-quality childcare grow up to do better in school, have less trouble with the law, and earn more as adults. Mothers who can’t afford childcare, meanwhile, absent themselves from the workforce during their prime earning years. Those mothers are less likely to advance professionally, have lower lifetime earnings, and a higher likelihood of retiring without adequate savings.
What’s more, universal childcare is the only way to guarantee a living wage to childcare workers, who are disproportionately likely to rely on public assistance, including SNAP (AKA food stamps) to make ends meet. These stressors affect childcare workers’ job performance, and also generate public expenditures to keep those workers fed and housed.
But the CBO model does not include any of those benefits. As Warren says, in a CBO assessment, giving every kid in America decent early childhood care and every childcare worker a living wage produces the same upside as putting $381.5 in a wheelbarrow and setting it on fire.
This is by design. Congress has decreed that CBO assessments can’t factor in secondary or indirect benefits from public expenditure. This is bonkers. Public investment is all secondary and indirect benefits — from highways to broadband, from parks to training programs, from education to Medicare. Excluding indirect benefits from assessments of public investments is a literal, obvious, unavoidable recipe for ending the most productive and beneficial forms of public spending.
It means that — for example — a CBO score for Meals on Wheels for seniors is not permitted to factor in the Medicare savings from seniors who can age in their homes with dignity, rather than being warehoused at tremendous public expense in nursing homes.
It means that the salaries of additional IRS enforcers can only be counted as an expense — Congress isn’t allowed to budget for the taxes that those enforcers will recover.
And, of course, it’s why we can’t have Medicare For All. Private health insurers treat care as an expense, with no upside. Denying you care and making you sicker isn’t a bug as far as the health insurance industry is concerned — it’s a feature. You bear the expense of the sickness, after all, and they realize the savings from denying you care.
But public health programs can factor in those health benefits and weigh them against health costs — in theory, at least. However, if the budgeting process refuses to factor in “indirect” benefits — like the fact that treating your chronic illness lets you continue to take care of your kids and frees your spouse from having to quit their job to look after you — then public health care costings become indistinguishable from the private sector’s for-profit death panels.
Child care is an absolute bargain. The US ranks 33d out of 37 rich countries in terms of public child care spending, and in so doing, it kneecaps innumerable mothers’ economic prospects. The upside of providing care is enormous, far outweighing the costs — so the CBO just doesn’t weigh them.
Warren is clear that there’s no way to make public child care compatible with CBO scoring. Even when she whittled away at her bill, excluding millions of families who would have benefited from the program, the CBO still flunked it.
The current budget-scoring system was designed for people who want to “shrink government until it fits in a bathtub, and then drown it.” It is designed so that we can’t have nice things. It is designed so that the computer always says no.
Warren calls for revisions to the CBO model, to factor in those indirect benefits that are central to public spending. She also calls for greater diversity in CBO oversight, currently managed by a board of 20 economists and only two non-economists — and the majority of the economists got their PhDs from the same program and all hew to the same orthodoxy.
For all its pretense of objectivity, modeling is a subjective, interpretive discipline. If all your modelers are steeped in a single school, they will incinerate the uncertainty and caveats that should be integrated into every modeler’s conclusions, the humility that comes from working with irreducible uncertainty.
Finally, Warren reminds us that there are values that are worthy of consideration, beyond a dollars-and-cents assessment. Even though programs like child care pay for themselves, that’s not the only reason to favor them — to demand them. Child care creates “an America in which everyone has opportunities — and ‘everyone’ includes mamas.” Child care is “an investment in care workers, treating them with respect for the hard work they do.”
The CBO’s assassination of universal child care is exceptional only because it was a public knifing. As David Dayen and Rakeen Mabud wrote in their piece yesterday, nearly all of the CBO’s dirty work is done in the dark, before a policy is floated to the public:
https://prospect.org/economy/2023-04-03-hidden-in-plain-sight/
The entire constellation of political possibility has been blotted out by the CBO, so that when we gaze up at the sky, we can only see a few sickly stars — weak economic nudges like pricing pollution, and not the glittering possibilities of banning it. We see the faint hope of “bending the cost-curve” on health care, and not the fierce light of simply providing care.
We can do politics. We have done it before. Every park and every highway, our libraries and our schools, our ports and our public universities — these were created by people no smarter than us. They didn’t rely on a lost art to do their work. We know how they did it. We know what’s stopping us from doing it again. And we know what to do about it.
Have you ever wanted to say thank you for these posts? Here’s how you can: I’m kickstarting the audiobook for my next novel, a post-cyberpunk anti-finance finance thriller about Silicon Valley scams called Red Team Blues. Amazon’s Audible refuses to carry my audiobooks because they’re DRM free, but crowdfunding makes them possible.

Until a few minutes ago I've never thought about Trapcahy but it seems intriguing tbh. Can you maybe share a few Trapcahy moments to get me started?
(Also I'm totally looking forward to the Trapcahy spanking fic now!)
Oh my god, hi, thank you for giving me an excuse to talk about them! Admittedly Trapcahy is a crackship that got wildly out of hand so there isn't actually a ton to point to in the show itself, a lot of it is just extrapolating, but they definitely have their moments that you can watch with shipping goggles on. Also sorry this is so many words, you activated my trap (heh) card. The important bits are in bold.
I tried to pick a top three episodes, but really it's a top four: Requiem for a Lightweight, Showtime, Life With Father, and Alcoholics Unanimous are probably the ones that give us the most to work with in terms of their dynamic. But they have lots of little moments sprinkled throughout the show! Trapper "shooting craps with the chaplain" (😏) in Sometimes You Hear the Bullet, their conversation in Mail Call, the opening scene of Rainbow Bridge ("Be good, and if you can't be good, be careful." "Aren't we lucky to have such a nice Father?"). Mulcahy watches Trapper make out with a nurse in L.I.P. (twice if you count Bulletin Board) and Trapper feeds him by hand in House Arrest and kisses his cheek in Kim. And I can't for the life of me remember the episode, but there's a scene where Trapper is pouring Mulcahy a drink at a party, and he says "Not too much, I'm praying later :)" and Trapper gives a side glance as if he'd been thinking he was about to get laid this whole time. (EDIT: It's Dear Dad Three!)
But mostly what interests me about Trapcahy is more their potential than what we actually see on-screen, just due to the relatively low-drama, ensemble nature of the seasons of MASH that Trapper was actually in. It's never explicitly stated in the show, but it's heavily implied on a number of occasions that Trapper was raised Catholic and now has a rocky at best relationship with the Church; I'm also very interested in the reading of Mulcahy as a closeted gay man, but each of those could be an essay unto themselves. The way I see them, they're two people with the specific experience of growing up both queer and very Irish Catholic in a big city, surrounded by suburban WASPs, and that gives them the unique potential to both heal and hurt each other in a way I don't think any other shipping partner could give either of them. They're mirrors in a way, two wildly different individuals that are the product of incredibly similar circumstances, and I think that's a fascinating space to play in!

Which 5 fics you've written are your favorites or most proud of?
Ooh! Thank you Anon for slipping into my askbox with a lovely little question. Must admit, this was hard! I'm proud of most of my fics so whittling it down to just five was tricky but here goes;
1. Flint and Steel - I feel like this is the best writing I've ever done. I wrote it back when I had bags of time to edit and re-read what I'd written previously so it's a better coherent story. I love the world-building, the imagery, the harsh but beautiful love story. This is probably still my best work to date and I really hope to finish the series one day and do it justice!
2. Would You Offer Your Throat To The Wolf - This one just feels... special to me. It's the most brutal, graphic and depressing fic that I've written and my first foray into pure horror but was very liberating to write. It also felt like something of an event at the time - I'd been building up towards it here on Tumblr so when I finally posted it, it kinda had its own little following. It's also a fic that has prompted so many incredible comments and feedback from readers, many of which said it inspired their own writing and that is just so cool to me!
3. When We're Alone - Of all my fics, this is probably my own little personal favourite (and one of my least popular 😂). It's a silly, little Underpunk fluff piece set in the Valetverse AU. I just loved writing a hopelessly un-domesticated Punk trying (and failing miserably) to nurse Taker back to health while he was injured. I usually write Punk as very intense and moody so having him in more of a comedy role was a lot of fun (although he's still very moody!)
4. The Moon Rises Red Tonight - My other unloved little baby! It's a close second for my personal favourite fic. It's utter self-indulgence - I wanted all four of my faves to fuck! That's it! That's the premise! But, because it's me, and I'm god-awful at writing smut, it somehow turned into a porn with plot fic, focusing in on politics, corruption, and trauma, whilst also being rather light-hearted and wholesome. And filthy too! It's a weird bag! I adore the au, I adore all the flawed characters and their self-discovery throughout and I want to draw and write more for it in the future.
5. The Chain - Sometimes, a moment sticks in your head and magic happens. That Smackdown where Drew carried a bloody Punk to the ramp and dumped his carcass for all of his hometown to see was....... [local dogs start barking]. I had to write something for it! Originally it was going to be another headcanon essay talking about a motif I'd used in several fics of Punk and AJ being connected by a chain with hooks embedded in their chests when it dawned on my to actually write a fic about it, resulting in this twisted soulmate au. To me, it's a perfect little fic, a beautiful gemstone in my collection and I'm very proud of it.
[Honourary Mention - Yes, I'm cheating here but I couldn't not mention my most popular fic The Valets of WWE. Despite it easily being my worst in terms of writing prowess, it's a huge personal achievement for me. It had a massive cast and was heavily influenced by reader requests and input so I had to think on my feet for every chapter and change things up on the fly sometimes. I also had to write for characters I didn't know very well during an era that I admittedly didn't really watch (no, I'd never seen any Legacy or Social Outcasts footage until writing this fic!!!) so that was a bit nerve-wracking. But despite the challenges, I managed to create this huge, intricate soap opera, that had so many interlinking storylines and plot threads, that had characters bouncing off each other constantly and even if it reads more like a script than narrative, I'm still very proud of it and I always look forward to returning to the valetverse for more!]

I started Hypnospace Outlaw
...and I've noticed a few small things that are super interesting, mostly with the idea of tutorialization.
Tumblr media
I didn't plan to do a writeup on this, so I don't have any of my own gameplay's screenshots. I remember most of the gist, so I can probably write a few sentences on this topic that really stuck with me. I would've gone back for more screens but I'm feeling very lazy and I might repost this with editing/photos in the future lol
So Hypnospace Outlaw is basically a pre-2K "internet janitor simulator" except that you don't do it for free. You're like a free contractor/PMC janitor, where you get comissions to hunt down certain infringement of internet/Hypnospace law.
The first case is to find instances where the copyright for a 1968 of a cartoon character named Gumshoe Gooper is being infringed upon. I found this case to be a phenomenal tutorial for both the game mechanics and the philosophical(?) questions the game wants to ask.
Tumblr media
Gumshoe Gooper (Hypnospace Outlaw)
At first upon getting this case, I was still grappling with the game mechanics, exploring the Windows 98-ass interface with the skill of an old man in a nursing home. At the time I entirely forgot about the search function, so I just explored by going through various web portals and webrings, a la Geocities.
I found a lot of interesting sites that I don't really have the time (nor screenshots) to talk about and do justice with, but there's a lot of awesome things to find in Hypnospace if you're willing to just take time and look around. I do want to possibly talk about that later if there's interest.
After just stumbling around the internet and remembering how hard it is to find stuff through web portals, I remembered the search function existed thanks to one of the sites I ended up on having tags that open up the search window. So I searched for "gooper"
You find 3 sites from that search, two from AbbyWrites58 and another from another woman who's name I can't recall right now. The first site is a typical late 90s personal site you might find, for a first-grade teacher. It contains mentions of memorials to dead lost ones, a Hypnospace Heaven or something, and is part of a "Spirituality" web ring, but otherwise not much to note. The first link however, is a link to "Drawings of Gumshoe Gooper by my first graders"
Tumblr media
Webrings on Abby's World (Hypnospace Outlaw)
On the link, its filled with pencil/crayon sketches of Gumshoe Gooper by a bunch of children, but also 2 gifs that seem like legitimate copyright infringement. I still felt apprehensive about reporting this page to the Hypnospace Enforcers, because it felt like a teacher just wanting to share the work of her students and I was hoping to find other violations to fit my quota. Regardless, even if I were to fill out my quota there were only 2 very clear examples of copyright infringement on the page.
So, I went back and checked out the other site by AbbyWrites58, and this one was... a political support website for a local politician? Who was seemingly a politician that had different views than, I, the player did? And she was using a GIF of Gumshoe Gooper saying that he supported her? I didn't have much hesitation just hitting her with the copyright violation on this page.
The third page was just another site but with an official Gumshoe Gooper strip posted on it. As you can tell the rest of this essay is lazily thrown together and just a retelling of events, but I do not remember the exact details of the page. I just remember still feeling apprehensive about reporting stuff on the page with children's art, so I think I reported that strip.
I still hadn't reached my quota of 3 violations reported, so I begrudgingly made my way back to the initial site I had landed on in my search. I decided to report one of the GIFs, and didn't feel too bad about it since while she did teach first graders I did find her political views somewhat, off-putting. I was going to make my way back to the case page to finalize it, but I got a notification on the not!Clippy software, telling me that if I find more violations I could get a bonus on closing the case?
Tumblr media
A child's drawing of Gumshoe Gooper (Hypnospace Outlaw)
So, I decide to report the other GIF on the page as well, and look at that: more money. And then I have a dark urge to test something out. What about this first grader's art? What if I file it for copyright infringement, what would happen? Would the kid get in trouble? Will the teacher get the blame? Did the teacher even deserve any blame? Well, I hit the report. It works. So I go through the page, filing every crude drawing of Gumshoe Gooper by children as a violation of copyright law.
I get a lot of money, and I don't feel too bad after learning more about AbbyWrites58. Besides, the other members of her webring were openly fascists! That sort of association makes you liable to uh, getting in serious trouble over copyright infringement of a 1968 cartoon character right? It's just my job! I needed to hit the quota! And what if I flag her account to the authorities, her account with her location and other personal information tied to it?! What is the worst that could happen, and maybe I would feel a bit more bad about it if her political views weren't so, wrong?
This sort of self-justification I found myself doing just felt fascinating. It was some of the most engaged I felt with a game's narrative in so long, and it's only been made more fascinating by later cases like even the one just following this with ZANE_ROCKS_14. If you liked this post, maybe I'll actually try to edit this one down properly and actually take screenshots too. Regardless, if you got this far thanks for reading!
Edit: I can see how this makes me look like kind of a dumbass but I guess what's more accurate is "what her political views were being signalled as" is more accurate for some of the stuff I say above lol, but I'm too lazy to edit the post more than this

HIII just wanted to drop by your inbox. i hope you’re doing well <3 i saw ur reblog about ev and miko and immediately went ??? i was like that’s my pairing why didn’t i get a notification??? then i remembered it was from my old blog 😭 but i would love to hear those hcs 🙂‍↕️
ALSO about the golden rewrite i’m so excited for it hehe it made me swap loren’s and kirsten’s careers because while i can imagine loren studying psychology i can’t imagine her being a therapist LMFAO but being a nurse works for her because i can see her studying to be a future doctor. plus the banters between her and asher would be so fun like i can already hear him telling her “you wanna be a doctor yet you smoke” “yeah so?” or like if loren’s not in a good mood and being snappy asher would be like “how do you even take care of people with that attitude?” shdhajdha
I hope you're doing well too, I miss you so much <3 At this point, you're getting my therapy bill because your ocs take up a whole portion of my brain.
I think about your pairings an unhealthy amount... so in this essay I WILL (I'm joking, I'll try and keep this short lol) disclaimer is that this is just a lot of unorganised word vomit:
Constellations by Jade LeMac gives me Ev and Miko vibes
And not to insert Cypress everywhere, but I hc that Ev wrote ‘Birds of a Feather’ by Billie Eilish about his friendship with Cy
Alsoo, Ev embracing Miko’s dancer background by doing dances with her — this in particular
okayy, but the Ev and Miko fan edits that are made by their fans are immaculate
even when they're in a relationship I imagine that Ev still has his private account that he follows Miko's social media accounts, and every once in a while Miko goes through her followings to find which account it is because Ev won't tell her
alsoo Miko's a dancer so I know she knows good music, and when Evren's particularly stuck on a song I see him calling Miko and saying "babe, will you listen to this hook for a quick second? I think it's missing something"
which brings me to when Ev's worried about making a genre switch with his music, Miko would give him such a good pep talk
this is a ramble, but I know Ev realised that Miko was the one when he didn't feel anxious around her. like, sure there are butterflies, but overall he feels calm and okay and soo content and he's never felt like that
they're always gonna be our Starstruck pairing <3, so whenever Miko's teasing Evren she's playfully like "*gasps* I cannot believe that I, Miko Sanada, get to sit next to the Evren Acevedo. this is everything I've ever wanted." — and Ev would roll his eyes and yet always absolutely adore the fact that Miko knew nothing about him before they got together
I always imagine Ev and Miko being so comfortable yapping with each other, and I see Miko sitting on Ev's lap and she's talking about football, dancing, fashion, whatever—and Ev's just intently listening and running his fingers through her hair
but alsoo not to be nsfw but all of these posts give me ev x miko vibes — x, x, and x, x, x
ooo, but also my ramble about Ev and Miko with Ev's parents, back story: Ev and his parents end up travelling to Colombia at least once a year to see the extended Acevedo family (and Rosalie always gets invited bc we know that she being divorced from Javier is criminal)
^ and Miko gets invited, and I just see Ev's family loving her. and I imagine Ev and his grandma cooking dinner together for everyone, like chopping vegetables and she goes "so you are in love?" and Ev smiles and says "you wouldn't be meeting her if I wasn't" and his grandma would pause before saying "if you come back to Colombia and Miko does not have a ring on her finger, I will kill you Evren"
^ and I just see the dinner going so well, and the Ace family end up making all these non-subtle hints about Ev and Miko's future, about marriage and kids, and comparing their relationship to Rosa and Javier's
I talk about Evren’s family a lot so I must know everything about Miko’s family and what you think their dynamic is like with Ev
I have soo many other hcs but this is already long so I'll leave those for another time asdfhjklk.
Omg, with Kirsten, I genuinely think you made me in oc form.
When Asher says that about Loren, I imagine Loren raising a brow and going "you have the audacity to talk me about attitude", and I see it being an argument that crops up any time a cigarette is between her lips.
But yeah, omg, I'm so happy you're excited for the rewrite. That makes me so happy <33

Just finished watching A Matter of Who (1961) and it's so tonally bizarre I could barely get through it. I've never seen two people share a screen with such vastly different vibes in my life: Terry-Thomas, debonair, roughish, and goofy, paired with Alex Nicol, wooden and serious. Some Americans gel really well with a British cast because there is some affection and friction there but Nicol is not suited to the British brand of humor or pathos. He's too direct and empirical in his acting style. T-T and Nicol are basically in two totally different films that just happen to be spliced together.
The casting is just all kinds of wrong all round. However, this film marks Richard Briers's screen debut, which is of great interest to me. He's good but it's not a venue that showcases his talent, especially as he's still growing into his trademarks and nuances. T-T is damn good. Weirdly believable as a "germ detective" and is quite capable of "serious" acting. It's true, I could listen to T-T talk about the transmission of infectious diseases for hours, but his role verged on a documentary or propaganda film from the W.H.O. They had a good thing going with T-T's character and the British nurse (Honor Blackman) in the beginning of the film but they only got a couple of moments together, leaving the rest to the imagination. The rest of the cast seemed to be mostly made up of random British character actors, and total amateur extras who had larger paragraphs of dialogue than Nicol.
The film is interesting conceptually but there should have been another director and producer at the helm to really make a go of it. The tone was way off, swinging wildly between British comedy-drama and American tv show. It was full of some bonkers lines. The script was functional but the dialogue was tenuously linked like a badly written essay. Great chunks of dialogue were punctuated by a few disconnected snappy lines, all very non sequitur.
The film is trippy to watch now in the covid era and at times borderline creepy as actors in hazmats fumigate a plane, T-T is literally wearing a mask in one scene, and later a handkerchief in lieu of a mask.
Too many wtf moments for me. Why is there a chimpanzee? They thought it would be amusing but honestly there is no need for it at all. Shoe-horned in love-triangle? Stupid. Tacked on schtick from T-T's usual routine, like the casual womanizing, didn't work because the character was clearly drinking his "respect women juice". I was too lazy to look up the script writer but whoever it was wrote T-T's character two different ways and didn't bother to blend or edit anything out. Overall, it was so cringe - not cute cringe - my-face-is-red-and-I have-to-pause-the-video cringe. Screencaps to follow.

The Gallery (Artist's Statement & Revised Final Proposal). "Light and Shadow"
Artist's Statement:
My photo essay seeks to unveil the soul of artist creations within a gallery using Light and Shadow. Inspired by the American photographer W. Eugene Smith, I tried to capture the essence of the art while still making it my own  through the timeless medium of black and white photography and in some cases inverting the shades.
In this series, I explore the subtle nuances of the gallery space, capturing the shadows cast by the artist's creations. Each frame is a choreography of contrasts—bold shadows that become their own image and gentle highlights that reflect into some of the work displayed becoming something present but ephemeral.  I hope the absence of color heightens the drama, allowing the viewer to see through my lens what was unnoticed with the naked eye.
Smith's use of light and shadow was my influence. His ability to transform ordinary scenes into poetic narratives resonates with me deeply.  I am drawn to the way Smith's photographs convey emotion, not just through the subjects themselves, but through the interplay of light and shadow.
I used Adobe Photoshop to alter the color images that I captured on a ProCamera app As in the hopes of honoring the legacy of W. Eugene Smith. Through my camera App, I aim to tell stories not just of the art on display but of the unseen narratives that unfold in the dance of light and shadow.
Positioned appropriately 6 of the 8 images were chosen to represent the “grey” that is American Democracy.
Real, Peace (American Soldiers wear digital camoflauge), Stars (representing US), hanging tree (representing women who were hung, and African Americans were hung unjustly, elephant (republican icon), chaotic image (democracy chaos).
Revised Proposal
I intended to document the inside of an art studio where students are challenged to create their projects using materials and concepts that they bring to the room. The room morphs from this vacant bare space to a hub of creativity and back to an empty space. In the time between its barren emptiness and the time the artists finalize and present their project there is a lot of activity and much of it is visually poetic. I had to change plans because the room wasn't lit enough to cast the array of shadows needed for my final. New concept involved shooting the effects of light and shadow on an exhibition without using flash.
I attempted to apply the techniques exemplified by American Photographer W. Eugene Smith. Smith, a renowend U.S. photojournalist. Smith is considered to be the most important American photographer in the development of the editorial photo essay. His major photo essays include World War II photographs, the visual stories of an American country doctor and a nurse midwife, and the pollution which damaged the health of the residents of Minamata in Japan. His work was in Black and White. He liked to, in his words, "sink into the background to record the human condition." I think artists have a similar advocation. Some of Smith's photographs are so powerful that they challenged perceptions of history. Artists do it to...and I want to show the space and the process they use.
Outcomes:
8 photos taken in an Art Studio/Gallery at SBU Staller
Series of photo's showing effects of light and shadow in a studio/gallery
4. Methods and Material:
Raw images shot on ProCamera Photo App on I Phone
Photoshop for editing
Student consent for their shadows to be photographed while they create their art /Gallery consent for Exhibits to be photographed
5. References:

Prologue
Decided to give a sneak peak into one of the books I am writing. This is the prologue. A letter to one of the main character's old professors about a paper one of his students wrote on the potential of a zombie outbreak. This has been and will be further edited, so It may be slightly different in the book.
My dear Professor Langdad,
In regards to your email about your student’s essay on a zombie apocalypse, I think it would be a landslide for the people. As she said, magic zombies won’t exist. It would need to be rabies like, a complex designed retrovirus, or some kind of parasite or multicell bacteria. Anyway, a zombie virus would never make it out of a city unless it was mass introduced into the air or something, and lots of the infected turned around the same time. A patient zero wouldn’t even make it out of the subway or wherever it is introduced. Never. Not on your life. There are too many armed people in this country. The people bit by that patient zero would, though. To the hospital. Where they would be in a room where doors are generally closed. Doctors are trained to handle patients that are rowdy, and if the patients are starting to get sick, they would likely see a pattern and lock the rooms of the others down. After that, measures would be put in place to keep staff out. Even if it took one turning and biting a nurse or someone, it would still not make it past that stage. The CDC would be called in, and it would leave the hospital safe and sound. End of apocalypse.
Now, if it was airborne and released like a contrail all over the USA… Good luck. Mass infection and turning. The military would be late to respond as they are to everything (see New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina). The creators would likely stagger the release so different places turn at different times to stretch resources. People are stupid, especially in the USA. People still believe Trump won. People didn’t think coronavirus was real. So, they wouldn’t believe a zombie is trying to kill them at first. The others would panic and try to flee, causing jams and hampering military land responses. Mass turning on bridges, infecting more people that weren’t infected. From there it’s up to how much the military can destroy in how little time. They can’t just start firebombing everywhere, but the outbreak is everywhere, so eventually, they would need to or risk losing more. By the time it was decided, it would likely be too late anyway. The military should, in turn, make mass cull points to lure them in to be more effective in their runs. Like an air horn in the middle of the city. Also, are they smart enough to know food or people are in houses? Jack breaks into little Sally’s house and sees her and her family waiting it out, and that pisses him off. Either he eats a lead slug, or he eats them. If he eats that slug, every zombie in earshot now heads in that direction. Chain of events.
Her argument is very compelling, though. She hits on a lot of the spots most Hollywood films and books miss. I quite like the idea that they would indeed still attack each other to an extent. Which leads to another question of how they would know each other are infected or who isn't? Is it a scent or just the fact that they are violent? A general look? The pack mentality and potential hierarchy are well thought about, too. It could lead to an explanation on hordes in fiction. I’m still not sold on the way it would have to be distributed. A patient zero would never work. It would also have to be fast acting in the long run. Like a generational virus. It gets more effective as it goes down the line and infects more people. I still don’t see it acting fast enough to cause instant turning or even in minutes. That would seem to be a combination of several factors. Getting to the brain and chemically altering it like, say, a coffee and caffeine. Fast enough to cause damage as soon as it reaches and enough to start the process. The rage would need to come first. But then there is no way for the newly infected host to spread the virus. There are so many unknown factors and missing steps. Can they eat to sustain themselves? Do they drink? If they are dead, how will rigor affect them? There is really no reasonable way to actually have a zombie apocalypse. It would need to be one big combination mega virus.
She definitely deserves an A for the project, though. It is far more well thought out than any book or movie I’ve seen or read. Is she sure she wants to be a virologist? She would have a very bright future in the storytelling industry. Book author or screenwriter. I hope she thrives wherever she ends up. Tell her to contact me when she graduates. I’d be happy to help her get a job here under me. If you ever need me for anything else, let me know.
Your very grateful former student,

If writing with chatgpt-level accuracy & coherence is one of the major qualifications for nursing, I'm already terrified.
Yes, predictive text causes major problems. In this case, sure, it might exacerbate a major problem that already exists.
But I want my nurses selected from a pool that includes those who can't write a lot of essays, because that's not the skill I need them to have. I want them narrowed down to those who have a much higher level of accuracy than commercially available chat algorithms.
Yes, I know the craziest bot answers that circulate are prank edits. But have you ever sat down and read a predictive text conversation? It sounds super realistic until you try to ground it in reality. Then the logic falls apart. You realize that it does feel like talking to a real person, but that real person is bullshitting for all they're worth trying to pretend they know something.
If chatGPT could pass your nursing class, something has already gone terribly wrong.
ur future nurse is using chapgpt to glide thru school u better take care of urself

i don't remember much of the film but he had a very hard life so i can't imagine it ending on a happy note.
i think most mobile players are android but prob works better on iPhones but I've realised that I must have trapped myself with playing it on my phone forever because I saved everything with my Apple ID ;-; damn, which laptop was that and what is your current one now? I guess GI will have some limitations since it is a free game and have you tried updating the game/reinstalling it instead? I don't know much about PS5, only nintendo switch lol. which phone are you thinking of getting?
yikes, that's so bad ;-; i'm really sorry to heard that but hang in there, i hope the anxiety isn't too bad. ah but i feel like a study's buddy need a certain personality so you don't get sidetrack and start slacking off as a duo lol. i've heard it better to goes over past papers with others.
isn't switerzland more mountain based? that's true, your high school era is very long lol, well i've heard that dentists get paid lot more if they goes private but obv medicine/nursing is more rewarding/impactful. that sound complex but i was never a stem major lmao but def interesting. i think on my end, you can goes into lab testing if you study biomedical science.
i no longer listen to kpop at all so you're more of a devoted fan lol, but during my turn, i do remember plastic surgery was quite common, i don't know about now though.
i agreed that silver is appealing because it blends in with more colours, gold just naturally stand out but what do you think about rose gold?
oh nice! which characters had you tried to cosplay? what's the longest explanation video have you watched? also, have you seen anime house? edits are super fun but i know some apps watermark the edits unless you pay for a subscription.
it is shocking at how much wigs can cost a fortune. is it even real hair ? also, do you have uniqlo on your end? I do and every few months, the brand release a range of anime t-shirts, right now they are doing JJK where I brought one and I managed to get the last one for Chainsaw Man too!
ah that's true! i dk if we will have to switch to discord or something else though considering how long our messages are, i'm sure tumblr dm will crash with our essays lol.
still sounds interesting, i actually quite enjoy stuff with a sad/bad ending
oh,, i’m pretty sure you can add your email as additional log-in data for genshin somewhere? maybe on hoyolab? i’ll try to figure it out later & update you on it. there’s got to be a way bc two years ago i used to do piloting + traded some genshin accs and one of the ones i got had an apple ID AND an email address. phew, no clue what my old laptop is (i still have it.. i just. never use it lol) but my new one is actually a convertible, it’s a lenovo yoga... 4? or so. not entirely sure but something like that. i had to get it for school in summer 2021, but i quite like it. yeah, i’ve tried like everything TT. multiple times. except a clean reboot, but i don’t think i’ll do that,, currently still waiting it out and hoping adhkgdfjk. my little brother has a switch i get to use too :D tho there’s a bunch of games that only work on ps5 (or ps4 or sometimes xbox too) i’d like to play so. phones... well. my Ideal Phone does not exist bc it would be a samsung phone with a 4.7" diameter, and that.... simply does not exist. my phone rn is a samsung galaxy a3 2017 btw,, and i’m thinking of going with a samsung in either the a or s series with a diameter of 6.4" because those are the smallest ones you can find... i did think about maybe getting an iphone because they still make smaller phones (or an interely different brand) but then i realised that i have all my fic wips and a ton of other notes on google notes and i very much have to be able to access them still so.
ty, it’s managable TT my study bestie & i work together perfectly, luckily enough :D sometimes someone else joins us too but it still works nicely. they both have the motivation to keep going, and i can’t slack off if they don’t either.
i think a good half of switzerland is just the alps lol. yeah, but to be fair i’ve technically repeated before. usually it’d either be 3, 6, or rarely 7 years depending on which school you go to, but for me it’ll be 8 years now bc i switched 4 years in. still pretty long though if i think about it,, hm personally i’m hardly interested in medicine with live patients at all (that sounds horrible.... i’m just a very science guy TT) and the part that interests me about forensic pathology is the science aspect. so no clue about that stuff lol.
no clue what's going on in the kpop scene, i just listen to some songs asfjfhasj
i like rose gold! more than typical gold too. i'm just not really a fan of yellow gold.
i'm technically working on a low-cost dottore cosplay rn, and i'm also counting that low-cost kazutora cosplay i'm also still working on, so those two. haven't ever gotten to a finished cosplay sadly asfhfjask. i don't keep track of the yt videos i've watched but i'm pretty sure the longest ones i've seen should be in the 5 hour category,, you know those iceberg explanation videos? i had a phase where i'd watch a ton of them, the longer, the better, so those should be the longest ones i've seen. no, i haven't! just checked it out though, seems cool. edits and apps.... okay. i used to make gacha edits. back in 2019 to 2021. i don't think i've ever published one because i never finished any of my edits, but because of that i've had my fair share of experience with editing apps lol. all the ones i'd found always have a watermark on them, but tbh i don't really mind them on edits.
agreed. i think good wings are made from real hair, worse/cheaper ones just plastic. i've never heard of uniqlo,, i just checked google maps and the closest one is 250km away and out of country lol. so, uh no :( tho we've got an animanga store in the city i go to school at which has some merch!
maybe one day.. i'm hardly active on discord (i don't have any space for it on my phone lol who would've thought) and my phone keeps crashing anyway so... at the moment this works just fine xD though do tell me if you've got technical problems on your end, and we'll see what we can do

my hc for the ages of the sdv marriage candidates
edited from the tags of this post
warning: essay
so we do have to keep in consideration the fact that time remains static and no one really changes, like the kids never grow even after 25 years of your farm. and i like to think that the years are actual years and i'm on year 4. so there's that. also the fact that i feel like you can't really get married your first year? (unless youre blade lmfao) cause you're busy with crops for so long. i personally got married (for the first time) in year 3 and i honestly had wanted to get married asap for the entire time i was playing but i just never had the resources to give loved gifts. but also i dated alex so my work was kinda cut out for me lol. but ALSO i was too busy to search for npcs when i had to mine and water and do all that kind of stuff that you do in your first couple years. but i digress.
anyways i'll stop rambling.
first off, i think that when you get your farm you are 21. 18 at first feels nice because it's a fresh start but the storyline is that you're working at a corporate job. plus, you can drink from day one so i feel like that should be factored in. i'm not talking about realism here with your ability to grow and plant crops, but i am heavily factoring what the sprites and portraits look like into my decisions.
let's start. so i started with harvey when i was thinking about this, but i think the easiest thing to start with is the main group of people that all seem to know each other. sdv isn't terribly realistic seeing that there is less people in this fully functioning town than in my old math class. but we know there are some friend groups.
so. i like to think that alex+haley, and seb+sam+abigail are all in the same GRADE level at school. they know each other and have connections and it's implied that haley and alex dated. now they could've definitely had an age gap but with haley's ego it feels more as if they are in the same grade. sebastian has a hella baby face but he feels like the oldest, in some way, alex and haley in various places and sam and abby are much younger. EDIT: i am realizing now that i should factor the birthdays into this because they're like the only thing we actually know--
okay so abigail's the oldest, in october, then seb in december, haley in april, alex and sam in july. i hc that you arrive in march, so when you arrive you are 21 and abby and seb are 21, the others are 20. we are not going to discuss how incredibly convienent it is that the only sort of clique of people there are exactly your age!! i don't think that the farmer is younger than them, because then it makes me kind of sad when i think about how little they have done in comparison to me making 5milly in a week yk
asldkfj i have so many more hcs to write but let's focus for now. let's talk siblings. maru i feel is a year younger than seb, so 20 when you arrive. she works as a nurse as a part time job. leah, in my opinion is 19. i know this is probably an original thought but she gives me major runaway teen vibes. i feel like she's been fixing up that place ever since she's 14. she also has a baby face.
emily i think is 3 years older than haley, and they are close like sisters but really only argue over emily's technical authority in the absence of their parents. so emily is 23 with her birthday in may.
i think harvey starts as being 28, which is questionable considering he's a licensed doctor but he also has a somewhat of a baby face. i know it sounds like i think that everyone has a baby face but i think abigail, elliott and emily look older than they actually are. elliott i think is 25, and i think this is the same for shane. i feel like shane's sister (?) would have been 31 if she lived, and that the two weren't that close but he still feels terribly guilty for being the one that survived. personally i dont know that much about shane so idk. lastly, i think penny is 24. she looks very young and also the fact that when she speaks, she has this sort of attitude that she thinks she's really smart and cool and a good person for being a teacher but actually she's kind of pretentious.
bonus: i think jas and vincent are 8 and 9 but that really doesn't matter that much.
so the ages they are in my game right now , based on birthday (it's spring year 4)
haley - 24 with her birthday in early april (just passed)
shane - 28 with his birthday in late april
emily - 26 with her birthday in late may
maru - 23 with her birthday in late june
alex - 24 with his birthday in early july
sam - 24 with his birthday in mid july
penny - 27 with her birthday in early sept
elliott - 28 with his birthday in early sept
abigail - 25 with her birthday in mid oct
seb - 25 with his birthday in late dec
harvey - 31 with his birthday in early jan
leah - 22 with her birthday in mid feb
TLDR notes - tried to keep everyone close together and within reasonable age that you could marry all of them without it being weird - farmer is 21 @ start, time passes in years like normal. i like to think her birthday is spring 0, so she'd be 25.

from The Writers Almanac: It's the birthday of Walt Whitman, born in West Hills, Long Island, New York (1819). Whitman worked as a printing press typesetter, teacher, journalist, and newspaper editor. He was working as a carpenter, his father's trade, and living with his mother in Brooklyn, when he read Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "The Poet," which claimed the new United States needed a poet to properly capture its spirit. Whitman decided he was that poet. "I was simmering, simmering, simmering," Whitman later said. "Emerson brought me to a boil."
Whitman began work on his collection Leaves of Grass, crafting an American epic that celebrated the common man. He did most of the typesetting for the book himself, and he made sure the edition was small enough to fit in a pocket, later explaining, "I am nearly always successful with the reader in the open air." He was 37 years old when he paid for the publication of 795 copies out of his own pocket.
Many of Whitman's poems were criticized for being openly erotic. One of Whitman's earliest reviews had called the book "a mass of stupid filth," accusing Whitman of "that horrible sin not to be mentioned among Christians." But rather than censoring himself, Whitman added 146 poems to his third edition.
He began to grow a literary reputation that swung from genius to moral reprobate, depending on the reader. Thoreau wrote, "It is as if the beasts spoke." Willa Cather referred to Whitman as "that dirty old man." Emerson praised Whitman's collection as "the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom America has yet contributed," and the critic William Michael Rossetti proclaimed that Whitman was a talent on par with Shakespeare.
Whitman left New York when his brother was wounded in the Civil War, traveling to Virginia and then to Washington, D.C., to serve as a volunteer Army hospital nurse. He had a reputation for unconventional clothing and manners. He wrote, "I cock my hat as I please, indoors and out." With the help of well-placed friends, Whitman eventually found work as a low-level clerk in the Department of the Interior. But when former Iowa Senator James Harlan discovered Whitman worked in his department, he had him dismissed, proclaiming Leaves of Grass was "full of indecent passages," and that Whitman himself was a "very bad man" and a "free lover."
Whitman's friend William Douglas O'Connor immediately came to his defense. He arranged for Whitman to be transferred to the attorney general's office, and he published a pamphlet refuting Harlan's charges. Titled The Good Gray Poet: A Vindication, the small book praised Whitman's "nobleness of character" and went on to quote from positive reviews — and to ridicule Harlan as an under-read philistine.
The pamphlet became more than a vindication: it helped to radically alter the average reader's perception of Whitman as both a writer and as a man: Out with the image of the bawdy nonconformist and in with the "good gray poet," the nickname for Whitman that is still popular to this day.
Whitman spent the last 20 years of his life revising and expanding Leaves of Grass, issuing the eighth and final edition in 1891, saying it was "at last complete — after 33 y'rs of hackling at it, all times & moods of my life, fair weather & foul, all parts of the land, and peace & war, young & old."
Today, most scholars agree that Whitman was likely gay. When he was asked directly, toward the end of his life, Whitman declined to answer. But he did say, shortly before he died, that sex was "the thing in my work which has been most misunderstood — that has excited the roundest opposition, the sharpest venom, the unintermitted slander, of the people who regard themselves as the custodians of the morals of the world."
