The Dia Art Center has taken on longterm stewardship of artist Cameron Rowland's 2018 work, Depreciation, which consists of a one-acre parcel of land in Edisto Island, SC, and restrictions on its deed that remove all monetary value or use. The land was once part of a plantation, then was given to a freed Black farmer following Sherman's Army, and then was soon repossessed by the former enslavers. Dia and Rowland discourage visiting the site, but the documentation of it will be on view at Dia:Beacon.

Cookbook Thoughts: Gullah Geechee Home Cooking by Emily Meggett

I was very, very excited for this one. Usually, I hear about a cookbook and it sits on my wishlist or library holds for ages (years...) as I wait to finish off other cookbook tries / remember to buy it. Not this one. This one we heard about it, bought it immediately, and added it to the stack of cookbooks to try next year. That's a coveted spot, I add three a year (although I am trying to go through them faster. mostly by being pickier about recipes to try.) We wanted it because it's one of two main influences on the food my partner grew up eating and he wanted to add more of that to our cooking rotation.

Having now read through it, this cookbook is not for us. Not because the book is bad, oh no. I rather expect the food from it to be excellent. It's not for us because it's what Partner already cooks! Basically he already has all these recipes in his head (I'm envious of folks who cook from memory btw). And his versions are scaled for a family of our size.

Ms. Emily Meggett, we don't have 16 people to feed every week, much less every day!! There's just 3–5 of us, 8 at most if we host a dinner party.

That said, I'm still adding 9 recipes to my to-try list:

Creole Shrimp

Garlic Shrimp

She Crab Soup

Fried Grits

Hushpuppies

Pecan Pie

Sweet Potato Pie

Benne Cookies

Chewies

The shrimp recipes because I don't have enough shrimp in my life, she crab soup bc Partner really loves it but doesn't make it, fried grits bc "that's cool as hell, keep it," hush puppies and pecan pie bc I love them everytime I eat them and yet don't have recipes for either, sweet potato pie just looks interesting and I want to taste how it differs from the casserole, benne cookies are a childhood memory of Partner's that apparently was the one thing he didn't learn to cook from Mom, and chewies, well those just look like I can eat them (chocolate is on the migraine no-no list).

Enjoying the last days of summer at the beach! Classes start on the 21st so I’m taking advantage of these few days off!
