In the book Spell Bound by F. T. Lukens, Antonia says “this relationship is over” and then later, Rook keeps getting embarrassed because he says things along the lines of “I’m the genius in this relationship,” which implies he uses ‘relationship’ romantically, so I guess Antonia and Fable could’ve been together

Happy reading!

When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won’t do his reputation any favors. When he’s offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that’s plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice. It’s one he’s certain he’ll regret. But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he’s been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

But how can Marius trust the man who represents everything he’s trying to avoid?

Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead--her gumiho soul--in the process. Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl--he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to humans. He's drawn to her anyway. With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon's.

✶ Spell Bound by F.T. Lukens - Review ✶
Tumblr media
• Goodreads • B&N Exclusive Edition • Author •
Genres: Young Adult, LGBTQ+, Magical, Non-Fiction
Tumblr media
It's no secret to anyone that FT Lukens is one of my absolute favorite authors and its even less of a secret that I have been looking forward to Spell Bound for what feels like YEARS lol. So I may be a little biased when I tell you the wait was COMPLETELY worth it!
Spell Bound follows Edison Rooker, a non-magical teen who's looking for his path in life after everything he knew was uprooted beneath him. He seeks out Antonia Hex, an incredibly powerful (and extremely attractive imo 😏) sorceress who specializes in hex and curse removal. What Edison doesn't know is that this simple decision would kick off a chain of events that would not only introduce him to an adorable 'rival' he cant stop thinking about; but also bring him head to head with the governing magical officials hungry for total control of the magical world.
I strongly believe FT has such a fantastic way of writing characters you cant help but love with stories that remain entertaining from start to finish!
Rook and Sun are excellent narrator's for this story. From two very different walks of life in this magically mixed world they are the embodiments of a golden retriever and black cat, which is a dynamic I ADORE. Sun reminds me so much of myself but I also saw a lot of myself in Rook as well. It had me easily rooting for both of them in every way from the first to last page.
The ONLY thing I wish was different was that there would be a book TWO as I would love nothing more than to check back in with both of them and see how they continue to grow and challenge one another in the best of ways!
If you haven't read this one I would absolutely recommend it. This is my favorite book by FT Lukens so far and I cant wait to see what they come up with next.

eARC Review: Spell Bound
Tumblr media
A HUGE thank you to Netgalley and Margaret K. McElderry Books for providing me an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:  Edison Rooker isn’t sure what to expect when he enters the office of Antonia Hex, the powerful sorceress who runs a call center for magical emergencies...Heck, he doesn’t even have magic. But he does have a plan—to regain the access to the magical world he lost when his grandmother passed. Antonia is intimidating, but she gives him a job and a new name—Rook—both of which he’s happy to accept. Now all Rook has to do is keep his Spell Binder, an illegal magical detection device, hidden from the Magical Consortium. And contend with Sun, the grumpy and annoyingly cute apprentice to Antonia’s rival colleague, Fable...But when the Consortium gets wind of Rook’s Spell Binder, they come for Antonia. All alone, Rook runs to the only other magical person he knows: Sun...now Rook and Sun have no choice but to work together to get their mentors back…or face losing their magic forever.
RELEASE DATE: April 4, 2023
See my full review under the cut!
FT Lukens has done it again! Fans of In Deeper Waters and So This is Ever After will rejoice at another one of their happy queer fantasies.
Spell Bound features the magical studies--and budding romance--between apprentices Rook and Sun. While Lukens’ two earlier novels have both been love stories between men, this book features a blossoming attraction between Rook and nonbinary protagonist Sun. As Lukens is themself nonbinary, it’s fabulous to see them create more representation for other nonbinary youth out there in a YA novel.
On the scale between Legends and Lattes (high fantasy with the lowest of stakes) and Priory of the Orange Tree (traditional high fantasy involving war between nations), Lukens books tend to fall in the middle. The conflicts tend to have intrigue and the promise of extending beyond the personal struggles of the main characters to impact the wider world around them. This one does raise some fascinating commentary on the ideas of class and power: who are the haves, who are the have-nots, and who gets to be a gatekeeper? However, there isn’t much depth to these discussions. Because, as per usual in a Lukens book, these conflicts come to a quick-yet-easily-resolved crisis with minimal cost to the characters.
I will say that some of the hastiness in the narrative outside of the romance is what knocked off a star for me. Two particular story lines were sketchily added but not fleshed out: the history of Antonia Hex and the nature of Rook’s recently deceased Grandmother. The funny thing was, I felt like those two things could have been connected. I’m loath to give too much away, but I saw a missed opportunity to connect Antonia’s deceased “evil” former apprentice and Rook’s family through ancestry.
Also, now I just want an entire novel on the previous adventures of badass Antonia Hex.
But still--this is another light, bright, sparkling YA queer fantasy from a demonstrated master storyteller. I tip my sorcerer’s hat to Lukens for keeping it fun!

Review:
A boy who wants nothing more than to be part of the magic community and the lengths he will go to to get it, even if it means teaming up with a cute frenemy apprentice sorcerer to save both of their mentors. Edison Rooker “Rook” isn’t magical, he can’t see the magic lines, but his grandmother was magical and raised him to know of magic... but sine he can’t do any or see it himself he has been cut out of the community and now will do anything to get back in. Rook gets an apprenticeship with Antonia Hex, a powerful sorceress who runs a call center for magical emergencies. While apprenticing for her he is working on creating his own device to see magic and finally prove that he belongs to the community, even if it means he has to lie, manipulate, and do whatever it takes. Rook is thrown for a loop by just how chaotic Antonia is and how her own past will impact him... particularly the fact that she had a previous apprentice who is gone and now she is banned from having any apprentice at all. Then he runs into Sun, a cute but grumpy nonbinary apprentice to Antonia’s rival colleague, Fable. Sun and Fable are stick to the rules kind of people while Rook and Antonia are all about breaking the rules. Everything Rook and Antonia do is essentially illegal to the Magical Consortium (think of that as basically the government) and when the Magical Consortium gets hints of their illegal work soon both Antonia and Fable are being brought in to get their magic bound (which is like death to sorcerers) and Rook and Sun are on the run. They’ll have to find a way to work together if they want to save their mentors all the while dealing with their growing feelings for one another. This one was an okay read, I just didn’t find myself all that interested in the characters despite how much I wanted to be. I found Rook to be a bit overbearing, but that’s just me, the romance was eh, and honestly I was expecting something else from this when I went into the book. I really liked the author’s previous works and this one was okay for me. I did enjoy Antonia and Fable, their history and how their friendship was. Overall, it’s a good read for maybe someone younger than me who likes stories about magic with a tiny bit of romance.
*Thanks Netgalley and Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing, Margaret K. McElderry Books for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
