Something I missed from the podcast version of Edge of Sleep that didn’t make it into the adaptation was The Moogles. It was the episode that really sold me on the premise. The mix of silliness and terrifying was a perfect example of the absurdity of dreams.
Something I’m glad they cut was the serial killer. It just felt so random and tropey. Replacing him with an old woman dying of cancer that Katie knew personally really fit the overall tone MUCH better.

I really liked the Edge of Sleep, it was fun recognizing some of the actors from other shows I watch! The music and cinematography is so good, especially in the scene where Katie is almost falling asleep in the ambulance.

my thoughts on the Edge of sleep show! Full series spoilers ahead!!! :)
(i should have live-blogged the whole series since i just binged it but oh well)
all of the people who died waking up with red triangle eyes surprised me, but Katie appearing out of the water made me so sad. it’s so fucked and i know dave’s going to suffer if we get another season.
god i want a season two right now, that was so good!!!
i do want to say my only nitpick is that i don’t like the elephant monster being in the shape of a man, only because when i listened to the podcast- i imagined a creature like the Ancient psychic tandem war elephant from adventure time haha. but i do understand the cgi for doing something like that would probably be impossible to make look good. this would have been perfect for an animated show, i can only imagine how cool the effects could be.
(now i need to draw scenes from the show and podcast lmao)
also, i loved all of the characters so much, and i think the way they were acting was pretty realistic? And i love how each characters introductions kind of foreshadow how they act during their sleep deprivation: Dave falling asleep and snapping himself awake in the beginning, Mateo staying awake and not looking tired and being ready to go out and party, Linda working a full shift and not complaining or asking for a break at all, and Katie who took sleeping pills and was probably a minute from falling asleep before being saved by Dave.
Katie was doomed from the beginning and it makes me so sad, i loved her and Dave very much.
i also absolutely love the whole cosmic horror of the whale and the elephant. the way they did Dave’s dream was really cool, but i still kinda remember how they described it in the podcast and i wish they could have done something similar-
(This is what i remember from it anyway, i did listen to the podcast like four years ago so. if i get something wrong that’s why lol)
Dave falls asleep and wakes up in a desert. he’s walking along the dunes and he’s so thirsty. literally dying for water. a being (??) appears and offers him a glass of water and when he’s about to drink it, he looks into the glass and sees a raging ocean. dark waves crashing and the screams of thousands maybe millions of people being swept in the water. he refuses to drink it (or hesitates to drink it?) and then he wakes up.
it’s such a cool image, i should relisten to the podcast soon and do a comparison :D

"And Imagine That You're There With Me"
Edge of Sleep, Dave Torres x Katie Dowd, After S1
Masterlist
Summary: Katie comes back
Warnings: angst, hurt/no comfort, just sad feels all around(which isn't new)
Word Count: 485 words
A/N: I thought of this watching the show's end when Katie was walking out of the water. Just the pain Dave would feel seeing her again, but not as her. I know if there is a s2 she will likely play as a double agent, but I like the idea of her being evil right off the bat. Go watch Edge of Sleep on Prime!
Dave didn’t want to fight a war. He didn’t want to fight at all anymore. The weight of pain and loss was becoming unbearable.
Reaching Asteria should’ve been the end—the finish line where he and his friends could finally find peace. A good ending.
But it wasn’t. The world was still dead.
Katie was dead.
Well, she was supposed to be.
"Katie?" His voice cracked the name like glass in his throat.
Another hallucination. It had to be.
Her eyes glowed red—sickly, haunting. Not Katie. Not her. She tilted her head, a smile stretching across her face. "Dave."
Another hallucination.
Katie, not Katie. Not. Katie.
She reaches out her hand. "Come to me."
He steps back. "No."
Katie's dead. He didn't know how the elephant got into Asteria, through the veil. It must've broken somewhere somehow. A hole, a tear in the veil that was meant to protect them from the monsters.
Her smile faltered. "Why not?" The familiar cadence of her voice twisted a knife in his gut. It sounded like her. Dave hated that more than he could describe.
"Katie's dead," He said firmly, "You aren't her."
The last time she had shown up it was in a casket. He wished she was still in it. Because then there would've been no doubt she wasn't dead, no hope that she was maybe still alive.
She wasn't alive. That is that.
"I wouldn't be here if I was dead," she insisted, shaking her head as if he had just told her another one of his stupid jokes.
A hollow laugh escaped him, bitter and pained. "You’re not real. You can’t be."
He was going insane. He had been dealing with night terrors since he was born and he was going insane when he was finally free from them.
"Why do you keep saying that?" she asked, "I’m right here. I found you."
He wanted to believe it, to reach for her and escape everything. But he couldn't. He had come so far.
"You’re a monster," he said, the words tasting like ash. "You’re not her."
Katie’s expression shifted, a flicker of hurt flashing across her face. "Davie..."
"You’re not real," he repeated, again and again and again, forcing the words through clenched teeth.
For a moment, silence stretched between them, suffocating.
"I am what you made me," she whispered, a hint of regret lacing her voice.
He shook his head, tears blurring his vision. "I didn’t want this."
"You never do."
She stepped close. "But here I am, just the same."
The world around them faded into shadows, leaving only the haunting echo of a love lost, replaced by a reflection of everything he had feared.
"Katie," he breathed, the name a prayer, a plea for salvation that would never come.
"Dance with me," she says. It doesn't sound much like a request at all.
And as she reached out once more, he knew there was no escaping it. He wasn't entirely sure he wanted to.
He didn't want to fight in a war. Not anymore.
Dave was just so tired.

Edge of sleep has been good so far, but I had no idea anything of what it was about, no reading the summary, no nothing, so it was very surprising when the first like minute of the second episode played and I was smacked in the face with Markiplier's version of that one alien horror movie I was never allowed to watch and then immediately thrown into half a make out scene with him as if an alien muppet looking thing didn't just erupt through his stomach as a little kid in his dream not even five seconds ago

Jumped on the Markiplier Edge of Sleep <- QCODE/Regency Productions trying to screw him over watch-a-thon mostly because I want to see a live-action Iron Lung and had the time to do so. I don’t know shit about Markiplier and haven’t ever watched his channel and I’ve never listened to the Edge of Sleep podcast before. I was just mildly pissed off enough by what I read the production companies where putting him through - and in the right mood to start a new show - that I bandwagoned and binged it tonight.
And Jesus H. Chuddley Frog. This show is amazing.
SPOILERS UNDER CUT
It’s weird. It’s trippy. The intro is fucking stop motion combined with - I dunno - 1940s dance music or something. There’s cults and monsters and flying whales?!?
Mark is really good at subtle emotion exploding into extreme emotion. All the cast is great, actually. The main 4 characters are really well written individuals that initially read like stereotypes and then start to get fleshed out as we follow them -> and they’re played by really good actors who put real emotion into these characters. The side characters also feel real, get you attached, and some are incredibly unique in a wild and even fun way.
The sets and makeup and practical effects are excellent. None of that “toss some CG at it in post” shit that often happens. Both the fantastical make up and the more mundane are totally believable as happening in this universe.
One of the central conceits of the story is that the main cast hasn’t slept in a long time and that actually shows. Shadows grow under their eyes. Their lips begin to chap. They sweat. They become pale. These are all things that a lot of big budget movies forget to add to so-called sleep deprived characters.
And the actors also show the sleep deprivation in dynamic detail!
As a life long insomniac who needs medical intervention for so much as a nap, I was really there with these characters on the last leg of their journey. Especially Matteo. Fuck knows there have been times where I absolutely should not have been driving and had to implement all sorts of strategies to keep focused.
And the continuous story surprises! You think you know where the story is going and you’re wrong! You think a scene is going to be mundane and it’ll pull the rug right out from under you!
Man, I am invested in this. I want to know where this is going! About the only thing I don’t like is that the episodes are only 20 minutes long and a “season” is six episodes. At least Sherlock gave us ~1.5 hours per episode for that kind of season count! (Can you tell how long it’s been since I routinely watched tv? It’s been a while.)
And the running theory on QCODEs bullshit is that they plan on intentionally sinking it and writing it off as a tax break. So… you know, no reason two. No Iron Lung because they stipulated the success of this project for backing Mark’s IL project. Oh, and they also had the fucking nerve to not even name him properly in the credits?! Like, he’s the actor for the main character and they’ve got his YouTube handle up there rather than his name. Now, maybe that’s what he wanted but it reads as an insult to a lot of people, including me.
Either way, 10/10. I actually do recommend watching it. If nothing else, to take a shit on Hollywood and not let them use it as a tax write off.
