[Review] Eden Obscura (iOS) & Pixeljunk Eden 2 (NS)
Tumblr media
A messy mobile malaise.
I ended my review of the original Pixeljunk Eden hopeful that a sequel would smooth out some rough edges and iterate in interesting ways on an already experimental game. Instead what I got was a clumsy spinoff, an aesthetic rehash that pivoted into mobile game exploitation and shallow repetition.
Eden Obscura is the smart device iteration of this follow-up project, released ten years after the original. I’m not sure what Baiyon was doing in the meantime but many of the assets are recycled, from the minimalist interactables to the dreamy backgrounds and even the ambient techno soundtrack. The basics are the same: swinging on silk, bursting baddies, procuring pollen, sprouting seeds, and making your merry way to a magical MacGuffin. Only now your time limit is tiny, you have multiple mid-air directional jumps by swiping or you can hover in place, and you’re always being penalised for straying too far. The new “out of bounds” system locks in a play area from where you last jumped, and far too often you’ll accidentally fly or fall out.
As a mobile experience turning these large playing fields into bite-sized sessions makes sense, but they also turned something that leaned more towards chill puzzling and exploration into a frantic flick-a-thon. Sadly other mobile conventions crept in too: microtransactions, a lootbox system that awards one-time boosts. Worst of all is the “random content” dynamic, where you’re assigned a draw of levels and a playable character rather than allowing you a preference or any means of guiding your own experience.
Tumblr media
The little critters you play as—Grimps, as they’re called—each have their own gameplay modifier. This can be extending the timer when seeds are grown, boosting the speed of your jumps, or shortening your silk (why?). The original game had a few designs for P1/2/3, but they’ve added a bunch more here, many of them musos and DJs owing to Baiyon’s vocation (and I’ll note that from what I saw they’re overwhelmingly male). When you clear a set of levels and the lottery picks your next Grimp, you’re stuck with them until you beat the next set. It makes the game feel a right grind, repeating the same things and watching some bars go up, and I felt sad that it had come to this.
A side note that the “Obscura” in the name is a reference to cameras, and indeed your device’s camera will be constantly on while the app is running (not great for battery life). This is used to affect the backgrounds, as everything visible through the lens will be projected in-game in highly distorted fashion, as well as enabling some cheap gimmicks during gameplay like occasionally pointing at light surfaces for bonus time, or pointing it at specific colours between levels to eke out more boosts (with a cooldown timer, naturally). All in all it felt unnecessary.
Tumblr media
So, I didn’t spend too long on Eden Obscura, keen to drop it and move on to the proper console sequel released two years later on the Switch. Little did I know that this now numbered sequel is little more than a port of the mobile game(!), now sans camera functionality. It’s a fully paid-up eShop game, but still has the one-time boosts and the loathed lottery system. At least the screen space is bigger and the timers more generous, but movement has for some reason been restricted: instead of half a dozen mid-air swipes and holds to build up your combo, you can now do one (1) extra directional jump after performing one aerial pause. And even though control is back to a controller, the controls themselves are completely different to the original game’s controls, and it just feels like you have less, well, control.
With only a drip feed of new content and a grating system of randomly enforced levels and characters, I got fed up pretty quickly with both implementations of this so-called sequel. I gave the mobile version a decent chance in some casual play sessions, but putting that experience on a console shows up its annoyances even more starkly and I didn’t play the Switch version for more than an hour. I’m done here. An ignoble end to my series on grappling games, and an object lesson that sometimes a sequel should be left at the back of the ideas drawer. If you have any interest at all in these games, please go check out the PC port of the original instead, which I’ve heard has a quality of life feature to save you from falls.

These Intrepid Surfers Chill Out Riding the Great Lakes' Wintry Waves Icy wind rolls off the shores of Lake Ontario, blowing past rows of pines and naked birches and reeling through the deserted streets of Rochester, New York. Most of the city’s inhabitants are hunkered down in the warmth of their homes, preparing for an imminent storm. Aurelien Bouche-Pillon, however, is preparing to go surfing. Born in the coastal French city of Biarritz, Bouche-Pillon says he came to America “with a surfboard and a backpack.” He moved to Rochester for a girlfriend, but found himself feeling low during the long winters, when he fantasized about California’s waves. Then, in 2006, Hurricane Ernesto flew up the coast and barreled into New York State. Bouche-Pillon’s thoughts turned to Lake Ontario. “I'm thinking, with this body of water and those winds—if I'm in the right place at the right time, there must be a wave somewhere,” he says. He drove along the shore, through the storm, until he found a pier by a stony beach. He wasn’t alone. Two men were already out on the lake, riding the eight-foot-plus waves drummed up by the hurricane. Bouche-Pillon had brought only a wetsuit, no surfboard, so he borrowed one and caught a wave. “That was the beginning of a long journey,” he says Surfing had kept him out of trouble in his youth, but the freezing lakes elevated the sport. “There is something very special and very spiritual about the cold water,” he says. “It cleans the mind and body.” Bouche-Pillon is part of a growing number of surfers who venture out onto the Great Lakes in winter’s extreme weather, sometimes braving sub-zero temperatures and snow squalls in pursuit of adrenaline, catharsis, and an escape from seasonal blues. Surfing in general has been shown to improve mental well-being, and surf therapy is becoming increasingly popular; for the properly prepared, catching a wave along the edges of North America’s vast inland seas may be particularly beneficial during the long Midwest winter. When Lake Erie-based surfer Sam Macsai moved to Ontario from her native Australia, she found herself homesick, missing the sunshine, and unable to escape cycles of negative thoughts. Everything changed, she says, when “somebody told me that you could actually surf here.” She went on to cofound a surf school called Saltless Surf, where she introduces people to the freshwater waves. “When you're in the pocket of a wave,” she says, “it's like nothing else in the entire world matters.” While surfers can be spotted exploring the lakes year round, wave conditions tend to be better in the winter, due in part to stronger winds. Also, “hot air rises, and cold sinks,” says Lake Michigan surfer Jamie Walter. Like a hand pushing down on the water, he says, the cold air pushes down on the lake and whips up the waves. Walter often surfs the lake’s lighthouse-studded shores with his 11-year-old son Jameson, who started surfing here when he was six—and now has both an Instagram following and sponsorship from Michigan’s Third Coast Surf Shop. The lakes’ waves tend to be smaller and choppier than on the ocean, and fresh water is less buoyant than salt water, which means lake surfers tend to spend more time in the water than gliding on its surface. For winter lake surfing in particular, proper gear is critical, including thicker wetsuits, gloves, and boots. Hypothermia is a significant risk: Without appropriate protective gear, surfers could lose consciousness in a matter of minutes. The senior Walter takes extra precautions with Jameson, applying petroleum jelly to exposed skin and dumping warm water down their wetsuits for a little extra heat before, during, and after their sessions. Guy Meadows, founding director of the Great Lakes Research Center at Michigan Technical University, high on the state’s Upper Peninsula, says surfing can be “great fun for the select few” prepared for it. He notes that, in late 2022, waves reached heights of 21 feet on nearby Lake Superior. But, he adds, even “a moderately small wave, 39 inches tall and moving at a substantial speed, is like getting hit by a Volkswagen.” Despite the extreme conditions and very real dangers of the Great Lakes in winter, the “select few” Meadows mentions are also a safe bunch. St. Louis County Sheriff's Lieutenant Todd Abernathy, whose jurisdiction bumps up against Lake Superior’s western edge in Minnesota, says he’s “never heard of a call” about a surfing accident. The region’s winter surfers tend to police themselves and agree that, says surfer Dave Benjamin, “Winter is not the time to try to come out and learn how to surf.” In addition to being a surfer, Benjamin is a cofounder of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project (GLSRP), a Lake Michigan-based volunteer organization that promotes water safety. The “surf rescue” part of GLSRP’s name refers to the water and not surfers who need rescue. In fact, since the organization began tracking drowning incidents across all five lakes in 2017, there have been no surfing-related deaths in any season. While rogue waves, rip currents, and other dangerous conditions can occur on the lakes year round, in winter just getting to the water can be the most treacherous part of the surfing experience thanks to icy roads and blizzard conditions. To find the perfect wave, serious surfers may spend hours scouring wind and swell reports, exchanging data in group chats, or trawling Google Earth in search of promising inlets and jetties that could foster big waves. They sometimes drive hundreds of miles to their chosen spot only to discover the lake is stuffed with pumpkin-sized chunks of ice—or worse, smooth as glass. But sometimes conditions are just right, leading to an experience that many of the surfers who venture out on the Great Lakes say approaches transcendence. Bouche-Pillon remembers a moment at his favorite, secret spot, when a massive wave came out of nowhere and washed the entire beach in white foam, followed by a surreal silence. Macsai recalls a particularly sublime moment surfing Lake Ontario, watching lightning bolts land on the lake’s horizon as snow fell. Her favorite winter surf spot is off a little Lake Erie town called Crystal Beach, which overflows with vacationers in summer. In winter, however, only snow-covered campsites, abandoned water parks, and rows of empty cabins—along with the occasional intrepid hawk—watch her as she surfs. “I wouldn't wish to be anywhere else.” Despite the isolation many Great Lakes winter surfers experience on the water, they find camaraderie either online, at regional, year-round surf shops, or at competitions and beach clean-up days. Connections in the small, close-knit group run deep: When a community member dies, surfers will often hold paddle-outs, gathering in a circle out on the water to honor their departed friend. Bouche-Pillon says he hopes the Great Lakes surf community will host a paddle-out for him one day. But for now, despite the gathering snow and howling wind outside, he’s itching to get to the lake. “There's something therapeutic and exciting about the cold, when you are out there on a stormy lake, and you see the movement of the water and feel the wind and the snow and you catch a big wave,” he says. “I wouldn't wish to be anywhere else.” https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/winter-surfers-great-lakes

ALLEGORY OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH, ca. 1670–72 by JOHANNES VERMEER
It is widely accepted by most scholars that the woman of Allegory is the penance-worshipping MARY MAGDELENE, a symbol of belief in CHRIST and the CATHOLIC FAITH. Her foot rests on a globe she seems ready to cast aside: she is abandoning worldly life for the life of CHRIST.
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw ALLEGORY was that VERMEER is imitating paintings that portray the Holy Virgin as she is portrayed in the Bible, but VERMEER'S version of the Virgin is very different. And the apple on the floor near MAGDALENE’s left foot is, obviously, the very one from EDEN.
In Allegory, the image on the wall behind him is a re-creation of JORDAENS' painting, "CRUCIFIXION," though VERMEER may have copied it from JORDAENS' original. The painting is believed to have been owned by VERMEER'S mother in-law MARIA THINS.
To the left of Magdalene is the home altar with what appears to be a missal and of course, the crucifix and chalice. Perhaps the ball hanging from the ceiling is meant to be a reflection, as in pondering, which is what MARY MAGDALENE. appears to be doing. Or maybe the artist is simply showing off his technical skills.
That leaves the leather screen to our right and the tapestry to the left. The tapestry appears in other VERMEER works (and in this case offers more proof that the artist used the camera obscura technique),

Idade aparente: 29 anos
Altura: 1,70
Orientação sexual: Bisexual
MBTI: ENTP, o inovador
Alinhamento moral: Chaotic neutral

The Wind Cries Molly
Tuesday, 1 August 2023
This story was inspired by the Atlas Obscura article about Molly Houses, as well as the songs The Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix and East of Eden by Big Country.
The Wind Cries Molly A Love on this Wasteland Story by Constance McEntee
I could start this with, “It was a dark and stormy night.” But that’s not only cliché, it would be just plain old wrong. It wasn’t stormy on this particular night. Hell, it wasn’t even really night, per se. It was a spring evening. Cold, to be sure, and a bit cloudy. But nothing so dramatic as “dark and stormy.”
Oh, well. It’s a fun phrase.
I was walking this breezy spring evening to the Goldfish Taproom. Though I’d been hoping I’d be walking with another instead of making this trip on my own. I tried not to dwell on my loneliness, but I couldn’t help but think I really looked the part. One hand in my pocket, my other hand on a walking stick, shoulders hunched up in an effort to keep the back of my neck warm with the collar of my coat. I knew I should’ve grabbed a scarf before I set out earlier, but I’d misjudged how quickly the evening air would cool as the sun set.
Misjudging seemed to be something I was doing a lot lately.
I know it’s cliché to say the air seemed colder and the wind a bit stronger as I walked alone down the pavement, but it really did feel that way. It’s often said there’s safety in numbers. Well, one is a number that’s easily overwhelmed. And that’s how I felt just then and there. I felt more than merely alone and lonely. It was something deeper than that. Vulnerable! That was it. I felt vulnerable. It wasn’t like Stone Cross in particular or Westhold in general were terrible places to live if you weren’t heterosexual. There weren’t any laws against our existence. It was more that we were strongly encouraged to reconsider our desires.
Who was I trying to kid? For all intents and purposes, Westhold was a cisgender, heterosexual, Christian theocracy. There might not have been laws forbidding our existences, but the norms of society all but made our existences difficult at the very least. And when people like me encountered trouble, we really couldn’t rely on The Law to aid us. But if you knew where and how to look, sanctuaries could be found. One such sanctuary was in the Goldfish Taproom and its Molly Room.
The trick was to be alert for society’s self-appointed enforcers of Right and Proper Gender Roles while trying not to look like you were nervous as hell. Because if we knew how to find our safe places, so did They. And They would do what They could to make safe spaces unsafe, if not wreck them outright. Maybe if I was walking with another I’d feel a little less vulnerable, but there still would have been the possibility of a risk even if there had been two of us.
But before long, I crossed the threshold of my sanctuary without trouble.
“Good evening, Mr. Frost!” the proprietor, Julian Gold, called out as I stepped inside.
“Good evening, Mr. Gold!” I shouted back, just as happily. I wasn’t necessarily feeling as happy as our shouted greetings sounded, but there was something about Mr. Gold’s seemingly endless cheerfulness that was so— I don’t want to say “infectious,” because that would make his joy sound like a disease. But, I can’t think of a better word. Influential? Maybe that’s a better word, as my mood certainly seemed influenced by his. At any rate, he knew how to make me feel not only welcome but almost cheerful when I wasn’t feeling particularly cheery.
“And how are you on this fine, spring evening?”
“I’ve been better,” I replied without even really thinking about what I was saying.
“Oh?”
“Let’s just say Dean isn’t what I thought he was.”
“Nathan, did you fall in love with another straight?”
“I don’t wanna talk about it.”
Julian nodded. “I’ll take that as a yes. Cocoa with whiskey and cream?”
“How’d you guess?”
“Because when you’re happy, you want coffee liqueur with cream. Over ice.”
“You’re a stalker. You know that, right?”
“I am most certainly not a stalker!” Julian drew himself up as if he’d been scandalized. “Good bartenders simply need to know what their regulars like. Go find a seat. It’ll be right out.”
Out. Now that was a loaded word. In this case, Julian meant my drink would be brought out of the main room and into back room where people like me could gather undisturbed.
“And where do you think you’re going?” the molly at the inner door asked archly. Yes: molly. It was an older word from long before the Great Fall. We chose to use that word for our community, as opposed to the words the hateful had for us.
And, yes: there was a ritual challenge to enter the Molly Room. I hated that it seemed necessary, but completely understood why at the same time. While my people weren’t officially illegal in Westhold in general and Stone Cross in particular, those who assaulted us rarely encountered any legal consequences. These self-annointed vigilantes of morality were everywhere, and they occasionally tried to hunt us down in our sanctuaries. It was safer for them to do so in private places than out on the public streets. But in these private places rules and regulations regarding weaponry, concealed or otherwise, were determined by the property owner. That was simply Westhold law, and Stone Cross was one small city in the nation. The building where the Goldfish Taproom could be found was owned by none other than Julian Gold, possibly the molliest of all the mollies. So he set the rules for weapons.
“It’s okay, I’m a friend of Oscar,” I replied, subtly gesturing with my walking stick.
“Well, then, right this way!” the molly said, opening the door with a grand swish.
Being a Friend of Oscar was the password into the Molly Room. And we meant Oscar Wilde, of course. There’s that famous portrait of him seated with a walking stick in one hand. We all had such things. Some had concealed blades in them, but most didn’t. And only the mollies were allowed to be armed in the Goldfish Taproom. Our sanctuaries often trained us to fight with our canes as if we were fencing. There had to be more to our lives than that tired old saying, “Si vis pacem, para bellum; If you want peace, prepare for war.” I hated that this seemed to be the reality of our lives here. But even with these seemingly constant reminders of society being arrayed against us, here among the mollies is where I could feel at ease.
As I proceeded across the threshold and into the inner sanctum of the Molly Room, a sense of peace and belonging washed over me. But even though I felt this sense of belonging, I could still imagine how we looked to outside eyes. I dismissed such thoughts. I knew there was more, much more, to us than how the hateful regarded us. At the same time, it was just so difficult to not think those thoughts when such things were shouted at us quite literally so often.
Taking a seat in an empty wing chair, I just surveyed the room. To my eyes, these so-called mollies were just a specific subgroup of the men of Stone Cross. There were slender effeminates, burly laborers, and everything in between. Some would bring a change of clothes, clothing that wouldn’t be wise to wear on The Outside. And, that wasn’t even including the drag queens and cross-dressers. Yes, there was a good variety of folks there. And so long as Julian Gold owned this building, the Goldfish Taproom would be the premier gathering place in Stone Cross for the likes of me. And there were various mollies in his will to inherit this place after his death.
Just as I was thinking these thoughts, Julian himself came in with my drink.
“A personal delivery? I’m flattered.”
“Don’t be,” he replied. “I simply wanted to be here in person to explain why it might seem watered down. I didn’t add as much whiskey this time. Nathan, don’t try to drown your sorrows with alcohol. Those bastards can swim all too well!”
I nodded, my eyes starting to tear up. “Thank you, Julian.”
He nodded in return, and moved to take his leave.
I was a bit miffed that he’d taken this seemingly paternal attitude toward me. But then, there were those who called him Uncle Goldie for good reason. It was as if he’d adopted all of us, in a way.
He was a source of hope for us, inspiring the mollies of Stone Cross to keep on keeping on amidst all the abuse, harassment, and violence we endured. We’d heard stories about Hellsapoppin to the west, where people like us were treated like regular members of society. There was often talk about making the journey across the border now that the war was over. True, their society and culture was very different from ours. Part of me wanted to emigrate while part of me wanted to stay. Stone Cross, Westhold, was my home! Why should I have to give up hope just to stay here? Why should I give up my home just to have hope?
Julian was right, though: self-medicating with alcohol was not a good idea. I knew there were others who seemed to be able to do tha safely. But it was a bad idea for me. And, the drink still tasted good. It wasn’t so much watered down as just heavier on the cream.
Easing back into my chair, I took Dean’s letter out of my coat pocket. Yes, the same pocket my hand had been in on my walk over here. It was as if I’d been holding his letter since I couldn’t hold him. His words seemed genuinely apologetic, mistaking my overtures for close friendship. He hadn’t meant to lead me on. Sentiments like that. It was all very bittersweet, and gave me much to think about. But my reverie was cut short by a commotion at the door.
“I told you, hag, I’m a friend of Oscar!” A very metrosexual looking man had just blustered his way past the molly at the door.
The room quieted almost immediately.
“Oh, gentlemen, do continue your carryings on,” the newcomer said. “I’ll just cruise around, if you don’t mind.”
“We do mind very much indeed, Constable,” Mr. Gold declared. “If it’s cruising you want, you’ll have to go elsewhere. We don’t do that here. This is gathering space. We talk, drink, eat, but we don’t cruise. Not here. We don’t discourage it, and we can certainly guide you to establishments where you desires can be fulfilled.”
“‘Constable’?” the newcomer repeated. Did he sound a bit nervous? “Why would you call me that?”
I don’t know how the others felt, but I could swear my heart stopped at the word “constable.” Looking around, I noticed other mollies leaning on their walking sticks, some tapping them on the floor.
“Darling,” the door warden molly said, “Uncle Goldie knows a great deal of things, and is a very keen observer.”
“And that does bear another question, Constable,” Mr. Gold continued. Oh, yes: in situations like this he wasn’t Julian or Uncle Goldie. At least, not to me. No. He was Mr. Gold, landed gentry of Stone Cross. Such displays of power shouldn’t have been necessary. But when they were, he played the part perfectly. “Are you here trying to make some arrests on false charges? Or are you really One of Us?”
The constable just glowered.
“I’m betting both,” another molly shouted.
The constable looked suddenly helpless.
“Oh, my dear constable,” Mr. Gold said. “You are between a rock and a hard place aren’t you? ‘Come now, and let us reason together’.”
For some reason, that seemed to work: quoting scripture. The constable nodded and left with Uncle Goldie. It seemed we might have a new molly among us.

OOC
Nome/Apelido: Ollye
Pronomes desejados: Ela/dela
Idade: 22
Triggers, se há algum: Não, nenhum.
IC - VAMPIROS
HEADCANONS
Trigger warining: Menção a violência doméstica e Infantil.

Another eden tower of time basement
Tumblr media
#ANOTHER EDEN TOWER OF TIME BASEMENT WINDOWS#
The main space, approached from the entrance lobby, is breathtaking, with the climb up the spiral stairs enjoyably spooky, and the top floor a revelation: all light, space and comfort, with little hint of ostentation. The overall effect is magical: brick fort on the outside, palatial home within. That would have lost us the great sense of space you get up there." "Otherwise, we'd have been forced to cram them into the big living chamber upstairs. "It was the only place for them really," says Piercy. These rooms, complete with grotto-like bathrooms, work beautifully down in the basement. The main living area and central brick column. A room for children, meanwhile, is being fitted with a camera obscura that will reflect the seascape on to its walls. These bring daylight into what would otherwise be dark storerooms better suited to housing cannonballs. Directly below that thrilling space, there are cosy bedrooms, the main ones ingeniously lit by lightwells cut through the brick at steep angles. This circular living room boasts a large fireplace and sitting area, as well as a cloakroom, a storeroom and a lobby leading to the front door – set some 20ft up from the ground and reached by a straight new steel stairway.
#ANOTHER EDEN TOWER OF TIME BASEMENT WINDOWS#
Here, lit by windows set into those deep walls, is another ravishing living space. Only the two spiral staircases beckoning from the sides suggest that, below decks, there's another dimension: a cavernous, circular brick chamber, with oak floors set around a vast central brick column. Stroll out onto the terrace and you feel as if you've walked from the bridge of a modern liner out on to its deck, where you stand bathed in light and sucking in sea air. Here is a special place to cook, entertain, or just while away the day. This elegant parasol not only provides a dramatic ceiling for the top floor living space, kitchen and dining area, it also allows mesmerising 360-degree views of the Suffolk coast: on one side tractors plough fields on the other, vast ships plough the last leg of journeys from, say, China to Felixstowe. It was the undulating new plywood roof, swooping over three-quarters of the battlements, that did most to turn Tower Y into a modern home. Spectacular view … the top floor, showcasing some of the tower’s 750,000 bricks. But if they aren't going to be lived in, what's to happen to them? Those that hadn't been blasted away during target practice by the military have often been left to rot, and then demolished." There are people who say the towers shouldn't become homes because this takes away from their historic role. Jackson adds: "We made friends with the conservation and planning people. But the underlying structure was as strong as a battleship." "When we first walked round," says Piercy, "the cellar was five-foot deep in water, while the roof was covered in soil blown across the fields over the years. Making Tower Y a home, though, was never going to be easy. The two had worked together at Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners – architects of the Eden Project – so had experience of taxing commissions requiring the highest standards of detailed design. Instead, Jackson and his architect Stuart Piercy got stuck in. Given all this, perhaps I should have cut my losses and walked away." He put in mains water and electricity, but I did have to face up to the fact that the tower was a Scheduled Monument, that it was on the Buildings at Risk register, and that it's part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that's also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. "I spent a year in negotiation with the farmer. "I wasn't wholly naive," says Jackson, whose American wife and young daughter are now settling in. And so began a 10-year affair with 750,000 Suffolk bricks. Jackson first came across the tower in June 2000, when it was rotting away at the edge of a farm. Today, from the battlements, or rather the roof terrace, three other towers can be seen, dotted along the shingle coast. The spartan living quarters, however, had been crammed around the entrance floor, above an arsenal of gunpowder and cannonballs, and below the wind-scythed roof deck. Until it became redundant in the 1870s, there had been troops at Tower Y, as well as coastguards after Napoleon's defeat.

Little Iri’s a sensitive little bean like her mama, but you can distract her from the bad feelings by reading her stories or singing her songs. She cries a lot but she can easily be comforted by being picked up and hugged---will just sit there all helpless until someone comes, then she makes the puppy face and the grabby hands.
Be careful of the grabby hands. She has an iron grip.

Claws dug into the white floors, spiderwebs of fractures flowering from where each talon pierced it. When the weapons rose around him like an army rising at a necromancer’s call, his tongue slithered out again to taste the magic in the air.
Tumblr media
“Dominic Ashtrum.” A voice, deep and doubled, seemed to resonate from the massive creature as his snout peeled back from his teeth, snarling---though it may have been more of a sneer. “You will become a stain on this floor.”
He opened his maws wide to punctuate the threat with a roar, about to leap forward, until his ears twitched at the faint melody stealing into the room.
There was a somber peace to it, but as it grew louder it began to irritate something within Kallen. It made him feel heavier---driving him to that oh, so familiar sensation of exhaustion. He shook his head, and lifted a paw to scratch at his ears. Exhaustion...but he couldn’t rest. Couldn’t. It was starting to hurt---his heart, his head.
This wasn’t in the routine. He wasn’t supposed to reach this point for another few weeks---a month!
Dsiregarding the fact that he was surrounded, or perhaps forgetting it all together, he shrunk back to his human form. However his eyes were still stained a lightless black and his teeth were still far too long and sharp for the mouth he had.
There was a desperate grunt that escaped him as he patted his coat, peeling it open to rummage through the hidden pockets only to groan in dismay---or pain---when he found they were all empty. “Where....where is---!!!”
He almost freezes when he realizes that he’d left it in the satchel that he’d asked Azrael to carry...
His shout is almost as growl when he pins Dominic with a manic glare, as though vowing to make good on his promise, before he becomes a column of black smoke that rises to the ceiling, twisting as it dips down and circles around the room before flying toward the exit. It caught the older man blocking the doorway in a gust of blinding vapors before it disappeared completely, a voice echoing alongside the lullaby.
“A z r a e l ! “
