Michael Jackson’s MTV impact

How big an impact did Michael Jackson have on MTV? Put it this way: it took Jackson’s death to get the channel to start playing music videos again.

For the first day and a half after the death of the King of Pop,MTV largely abandoned its usual lineup of reality shows in favor of a marathon of Jackson videos,from the classics like “Beat It” to more obscure ones like 2001’s “You Rock My World” (with a Marlon Brando cameo!).

It’s been often said that Jackson brought about two fundamental changes to the world of music video:he desegregated MTV,and the cost and scope of his videos marked a paradigm shift away from the cheap,unambitious schlock MTV had been showing to that point.

There’s more evidence supporting the former theory than the latter,but Jackson inarguably made as big a mark in the world of video as he did in the world of music itself.

Great as his songs were,many of our strongest memories of him come from television:The early Jackson 5 appearances with Diana Ross.The Rankin/Bass-produced Saturday morning cartoon.Jackson moonwalking to “Billie Jean” on the Motown 25th anniversary special on CBS in 1983,which has to rank alongside the “Ed Sullivan Show” debuts of Elvis Presley and The Beatles among the most iconic moments in the crossover between music and TV.

Most of all,we think of the videos: of Michael as a dancing zombie in “Thriller,” Michael as a tough gang kid in “Beat It,” Michael evading the paparazzi in “Billie Jean,” etc. As he grew from boy to man,it was his dancing as much as his singing that made him the King of Pop,and nowhere was his otherworldly footwork on better display than in his videos.

MTV executives have always denied that there was any kind of prohibition against African American artists in the channel’s early days,while Walter Yetnikoff,who was the head of Jackson’s record label at the time,has always insisted there was.

Yetnikoff wrote in his autobiography, “Howling at the Moon,” that “I screamed bloody murder when MTV refused to air his videos.They argued that their format, white rock,excluded Michael’s music.I argued they were racist (jerks) and I’d trumpet it to the world if they didn’t relent… With added pressure from Quincy Jones,they caved in,and in doing so the MTV color line came crashing down.”

Whether MTV’s resistance to Jackson had to do with color or genre,there was no question that his videos quickly became the channel’s biggest draw.

The launch of the video for “Thriller” a 13-minute pastiche of ’50s horror movies,directed by John Landis and featuring horror legend Vincent Price in a cameo,was presented with all the pomp and circumstance of a movie premiere.Later Jackson videos,notably “Bad” and “Black or White,” got similar treatment.

Whether there had previously been resistance to artists of color on the channel or not,there’s no question that they became more prevalent after Jackson’s ascension.

As for changing the content of the videos themselves,what Jackson and his collaborators accomplished wasn’t so much a matter of kind as of degree.While the reputation of early ’80s MTV was of low-budget videos that were little more than glorified concert footage,many videos of the pre-“Thriller” period were ambitious and/or expensive,like Duran Duran’s “Rio,” or Blondie’s “Rapture.”

But the “Beat It” video cost a reported $150,000,a huge figure at the time.”Thriller” was an epic.Many of Jackson’s videos in later years would debut at an extreme length,then be cut down for regular airplay.

In addition to Landis,Jackson would work with directors like Martin Scorsese (“Bad”),John Singleton (“Remember the Time,”which featured cameos by Eddie Murphy and Magic Johnson),Spike Lee (“They Don’t Care About Us”) and David Fincher (“Who Is It”). (Jackson also got Francis Ford Coppola to direct “Captain EO,” the 3-D movie musical that used to play at Disney’s theme parks.)

And as Jackson put more time,money and artistry into his videos,other singers followed suit.

“What?!” Garth shouts to be heard over the fade of Eddie’s guitar.

“C’om man. Even Metallica covered “Whiskey in a Jar” Chrissy points out.

“That’s right.” Says Jeff as he snaps his fingers and points to Eddie, who gives him a rough scowl. “And Halestorm covered that GaGa song that you said; “Made your ears bleed less than the original” He smirked.

“Don’t Quote me to me.” Eddie all but snarls back at him.

“A few bands even made a name for themselves by doing covers,” Chrissy said matter-of-factly.

“Like who Princess?” Eddie asks turning to her. Finally releasing his guitar from his grip letting it just hang across his body.

“Our last night.” She starts off holding up a finger. “I Prevail, Joan Jett. Fucking Elvis Presley’s biggest hit was a cover song. Bad Wolves cover of Zombie.” Each band got another one of her fingers raised. Eddie couldn’t help but notice how dainty they were.

From behind him Garth whistles. “Girl did her homework.”

“Shut it.” Eddie snapped at his band. Then turning his soulful eyes back to Chrissy he raised an eyebrow and asks, “So what is your idea exactly, Princess?”

She stood and began walking as she talked. She tried her hardest to make eye contact with all of the band members. And did her best not to twist her fingers around one another as she talked. ( All tricks she learned from that “Public Speaking” class her mother made her take.)

“One CD. Ten to Twelve tracks, all collaborations, all covers. We do a small tour for three to four months. Playing in smaller venues. We remind people that we came from small towns. That we struggled to get where we are and it makes the victory taste all that sweeter.” She huffed out. Her sentences were short and to the point. She ended her speech by looking at Eddie. And tried very hard not to show any emotion as she watched his eyes dart to her lips when she said taste.

Before she could dwell on it Garth asked, “How many bands? Or just us?”

“We could ask others,” she said but it came out as a question and not the statement she meant for it to sound like.

“We know a smaller band that would benefit from a small tour like this,” Jeff said. He and Garth were clearly on the same train of thought.

“Wait, so you’re in?” She asks to Clarify.

“Oh ya,” Jeff said smiling.

“You had us at “Three to Four month Tour,” Garth added. Winking at her.

“You guys don’t need a day to talk it over?” She asked them as a group but her eyes never left Eddies.

“No. Let's do this.” He said. She couldn’t stop the thrill that ran through her body at his words. Or the wide smile that broke across her face. She couldn’t wait to get started.

Library

Remember the days when we would show off our album collections. The days when we were expected to look at the collections when we entered a house or an apartment. Remember the conclusions drawn and the appreciations uttered.? We expected the usual...Beatles, Stones, Elvis, Byrds, Dylan Animals, Doors, and were surprised and encouraged when we saw Leonard Cohen or Johnny Rivers or Sam Cooke or Zappa or the Zombies or Duane Eddy or Bert Kaempfert or Kinks.

Now except for a few, albums have disappeared into dustbins, garbage cans or trade offs. Some of my last remaining albums I gifted to my daughter Mary when she bought her turntable as vinyl made a brief return with the twenty and thirty some things.

We still have our libraries to reveal our tastes although even the libraries are becoming sparse. We have several libraries in our house, only two of them visible; the collection in our office and my collection in the “man cave”.

The other libraries are located within our KIndle readers and Amazon Fires. My kindle has 835 titles, my Amazon has an additional 155.

Nobody gets to see my hand held collections.

A couple of days ago, I dropped my Kindle on the bathroom floor. The covering shattered and 835 titles were frozen, trapped in some sort of cyber limbo.

So today we’re headed over to the Huntersville public library which has been closed for the past eight months. It’s only partially opened. We can reserve books from the main library at Charlotte and have those books sent to Huntersville, where we can retrieve them.

I love libraries, always have since the days of Dr. Seuss and Herbert S Zim.

Yesterday I took a close look at our office library to see what it said about our tastes.

Eclectic of course.

We have 8 rows with about 30 books of all sizes in each row.

The row on the bottom left reveals Lynn’s love of Patterson, Baldacci and King.

The latest Alex Cross book is in the mail for Christmas. There are surprisingly few novels in my collection but I find Tom Wolfe, Kurt Vonnegut, MIchael Chabon, Robert Graves, Norman Mailer, Carl Hiassen, John Barth, JD Salinger, Emily Bronte, Jane Austin, Mary Shelley,WP Kinsella, John Irving, Richard Russo, Dickens, Dosteovsky and Stieg Larsen.

and right there in the middle of all of ‘em are two copies of Full Filler by Ice Rivers, an obscure artist of whom I am particularly fond.

Most of the other books are non-fiction dealing with baseball, films, boxing, wrestling, television. language awareness, English usage, politics, rock and roll, Dali, Ali, Star Wars and lots and lots of Shakespeare writings an analyses.

I don’t quite know where to categorize Robert Crumb and the Book of Genesis Illustrated but he and it are there as well.

So there we are.

All of the hundreds of others are stored in my brain which has grown very overcrowded and needs the relief of writing and thus reclaiming my intellectual property.
