The Rascals - Sattva (1968)

If Once Upon a Dream was supposed to be the Rascals' Sgt Pepper's, then Sattva is Within Without You. Although George's song never broke into a wonderful soul section in the middle of his tune. Kind of reminds me of Traffic's fist LP. Very cool stuff, and the Rascals were actually playing the sitar, tamboura and tabla.

I’ve played this one twice, but the last time was in April 2021, so you’ve forgotten it by now and need me to refresh your memory, right?  I really intended to go in search of a new song tonight, something I haven’t played here before, but frankly I’m just too exhausted, both mentally & physically, so I beg your forgiveness for yet another redux.  I’ll do better tomorrow night … I promise! …

A lot of quietly influential musicians were actually successful during their time, yet something happened to their later reception that caused to become a hidden layer everyone seems to be aware of. To be honest, the 60's had their share of such players. Look, the period had many who are not that familiar anymore to many people, such as The Rascals. Sure, they were feted at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, but tell me – how many times have you heard their songs lately in comparison to, say, The Byrds. Listen, I tend to believe the 60's did several things right – not all of them, mind you, as many like to speak –, yet the later histories did put some musicians away thanks to, I'm uncertain, reasons? Sadly, I must add, since the era remains one of the most intriguing.

Has another year passed us by? Time doesn't move so slowly, time is a speed racer. Anyhow, thank you for following my discussion on music yet again, I cherish your reading. To be honest, these discussions kept me alive this year as I was going through one of the worst periods of my life, which could also be seen on me not really being here at some times. While I hope the crappiness shall not be that present later on, I'm well aware how vigilant I must be, some of my posts left a lot to be desired. Still, I will continue with this blog, where I share my musical discoveries and I wish you would also be willing to locate the treasure we take for granted. Listen to some great music, the latter's easier to find than ever.

Today LIVE - special time for an old friend. I’ve known bassist John Conte for 4 decades, the first two of which he played regularly at every venue I booked. Starting at The Rock ’N Roll Cafe on Bleecker Street, 1/2 of The Brothers of Conte, as I affectionately came to call them, with his brother Steve, they were weekly regulars whenever their schedules allowed. John was in Blood, Sweat & Tears, or maybe this was just after? During their tenure at the Rock ’N Roll, late one rainy night they brought in their friend, Phoebe Snow, a life changer for me who had been a diehard fan since high school. The Phoeb’s and I became fast friends, and I have the boys to thank for that as well as for years of amazing live music there, and at Spo-dee-o-dee’s, Woody’s, RockGirl, The Marquee, The Cafe Wha, True Blue and The China Club, where they were also a part of my RockGirl Jam Band. A stellar bassist, with an easy temperament and oh so easy on the eyes, it was always a joy when John was around. 

Coming from a musical family, his mother, Rosemary, is an accomplished jazz singer, and his brother, Steve, is an amazing guitarist and vocalist and the two began making music together as kids. They’ve had innumerable bands together since, including The Conte Brothers, The Hudson River Rats, The Crown Jewels, Company of Wolves, and The Contes.

A seasoned session musician, John’s studio work included working with Tony Visconti and David Bowie, he appears on LPs by Peter Wolf, Ian Hunter, Rachel Yamagata, Steve Forbert, and Garland Jeffries to name some. 

John toured with Joan Osborne, spent a year on the road with Roseanne Cash, and has been playing with Southside Johnny and Asbury Jukes since 2008. He’s taken the stage with Springsteen for an impromptu 45 min set, he’s jammed with Cyndi Lauper, Carole King, Etta James, Julian Lennon, and Willy Deville to name a few.  He’s performed perform with Jon Bon Jovi, Rachael Yamagata, Natalie Merchant, Patti Smith, Marshall Crenshaw, Sarah Bareilles, Ian Hunter, John Waite, Marc Cohn, Jeff Golub, Paul Shaffer, Rita Wilson, Steven Van Zandt, Felix Cavaliere, Donovan, Chuck Berry, Howard Tate, Darlene Love, Eddie Brigati, Al Kooper, Denny Laine, Leslie West, Willie Nile, Peter Yarrow & David Johansen.

It’s been over 30 years since I’ve seen my old friend. To say I’m looking forward to this is a crazy understatement. John is an understated fellow, and this may be his first long-form solo interview. Hope you join us for this momentous reunion.
