Dionysus had many mystery cults and his followers were often known for having drunken revelries as a part of the worship practices. He likely predates 1300 BCE, though the secrecy around the cultic religious practices makes it difficult to know for sure or much about him and his followers, both mythic and historic. The maenads revealed a type of 'madness of the vine' as well as the madness of religious ecstasy.

What we do know about Dionysus worship is that it involved frenzied dancing, loud music including cymbals crashing, screaming, drinking, and pushing each other for more and more ecstasy in order to bring about the feeling of the soul being freed from the body to commune with Dionysus. The rituals built up to acts like uprooting trees, tearing apart a bull (a symbol of Dionysus) with bare hands in order to eat it raw in order to become possessed by Dionysus.

Maenads were viewed as priestesses when the title was applied to historical people. In the myths, only women who didn't greet or follow Dionysus properly were cursed with madness and were made to kill their children, and sometimes turned them into bats. This echoed Dionysus' behavior to his own children, though he brought them back. Some women who voluntarily became maenads by living their 'proper duties' and moving to the wilderness to worship Dionysus. They were also said to nurse and care for the young Dionysus, being a type of nymph.

Maenads often wore fawn skins and carried a long stick wrapped in ivy or vine leaves with a pine cone on one end called a 'thyrsus' and ivy-wreathes in their hair or a bull-like helmet. The Bassarids wore fox skin instead. Most depictions of maenads were on kraters, jars that were used to mix water and wine and in the act of tearing apart animals. They also commonly have a snake companion.
