Becoming sustainable is a journey that takes a long time. You can not and will not change your lifestyle to fully sustainable in a month. Changing your entire lifestyle in a way that directly clashes with how society is currently functioning (consumerism/capitalism) is not as easy as the tiktokers doing partnerships with bamboo toothbrushes make you believe.

Start small. Repurpose things you already have, even if they aren’t recyclable. Scrape the last of your moisturizer into a tub if it won’t come out the bottle any more. Use the cut open bottle as a pin holder. Use old dvd cases as letter storage, for arts and crafts, to protect your post. Donate things you can’t reuse to your local charity shops or shelters.

You’re also inherently going to have to learn new skills. Learning to stitch clothing to repair clothes, and learning how to sew to re-use clothes that can’t be salvaged. Learning some basic carpentry and upholstery skills for furniture, learning how to compost properly, learning to cook in unusual ways like canning and bulk cooking, gardening and farming. You’ll need to learn how to navigate shopping sustainably by researching the brands you consume, the shops you buy at, the local economy.

There's also the emotional toll of it. Learning new skills and leading a sustainable lifestyle will be very rewarding and fulfilling, but the journey there will be difficult. Researching it all will likely depress you, you’ll come across how shit nestle is, how deep-rooted consumerism is, how it impacts the ocean and humanity. You’ll find there's almost nothing, no brand, no item, no store that hasn’t been touched by consumerism and problematic practices, and it will get absolutely exhausting. You’ll find YouTubers and bloggers who have been doing this longer than you and finally help you navigate everything, and then they’re a terf. It’s going to be a challenging journey.

You will also realize becoming fully 100% sustainable is impossible to you and gated to rich people. You will need to accept this. Not everyone has access to local shops that provide sustainable items, and online shipping itself is usually not eco-friendly. Having a pet might be a roadblock, unless you can build your own house it's probably not built sustainably, if you live with family or roommates they might dampen your lifestyle. You’ll learn that being sustainable isn’t going the whole solution to saving the planet. You cannot strive for perfection here, you can only make an effort.

Minor body and clothing ranting ahead. Some weight talk, so I am going to put it beneath the cut.

So due to the Scary Hospital Visit last year, I did some major dietary changes and adopted an exercise routine. I cut down on my sodium intake, as well as my added sugars, and tend to eat mostly vegan at home, with lots of vegetables and whole grains. I also try to do yoga classes at least twice a week—generally one slower, more meditative class, and then one faster, more energetic class. This has increased my strength and energy quite a bit, which means I take the stairs more at work and am more confident walking longer distances etc.

As a result I have lost… quite a lot of weight. This is awkward because a lot of my colleagues routinely tell me I look “so great” and “so healthy” but tend to leave out what they really mean by it. And, you know, that is a yikes because I think I looked cute beforehand!

Outside of that, though, and really the reason I am ranting, is that… many of my clothes do not fit anymore? There were some clothes I was excited to fit back into, but now many things are too big for me instead of too small for me. (Probably because in part, they got stretched out a bit before.) Like, I don’t just mean they are loose, I mean my jeans and the underwear beneath them were literally sliding down my hips and I was worried this might get bad. I have a few pairs of pants that just don’t work anymore, and it’s getting colder and I have almost no pants, really. I need more pants!

I want to buy some new pants, but I don’t know where to begin. Almost everything is fast fashion + synthetic fabrics that falls apart nowadays, and so few things can be bought brick and mortar. At the same time, I would like to go somewhere brick and mortar, and I am willing to spend more money on things that will last longer and not ruin the earth with plastic, and that just… doesn’t exist anymore? There’s a store up on one end of the red line I should probably go back to, but it’s far away. Meanwhile there’s a local woman I know who used to sell eco-friendly brands, but she closed her brick and mortar store and mostly sells online now. She may still have an office space close by where I can come and try things on, but I’d have to email her and it takes a while to get a hold of her and it’s just a lot and I want the instant gratification of going to her old shop because it was always fun and easy.

Plus like, part of me is a little scared to buy clothes anyway because what if I gain the weight back again?

1. Reusable cups are a great alternative to things like single use water bottles and single use cups! Reusing or refilling these single use items is also an option! Reusing single use products is a great way to cut down on waste. Refilling a plastic water bottle or using an old coffee-shop cup as a pen/paint brush/makeup brush/pencil holder on your desk is a great way to try and help reduce the use of single-use plastics. Remember! It isn't single use if you use it more than once!

2. Have clothes that are falling apart? Don't we all! Fast fashion sometimes feels unavoidable, so don't feel bad! Youtube and google are free! If you have some clothes that have holes, tears, or fraying seems, hop online and teach yourself how to fix them. There are lots of places that sell/give out inexpensive or free sewing kits! This also works for blankets and sheets! 

3. Unpaper towels have risen in popularity recently, and I think that's great! But let's face it friends, not everyone can afford to spend upwards of $15 on what is essentially a single roll of paper towels that you have to wash in order to reuse, especially when paper towels are more convenient than having to do laundry every day or two to make sure you have a full roll. Lots of stores like Walmart or Target have large packs of rags you can buy for relatively cheep! Some stores have 5-10 packs for $5-$10! Rags are the same dang thing as unpaper towels, friends! Also, paper towels are made of paper. Paper is soluble in water and, aside from glossy or colored paper, is compostable! Throw those used paper towels into a compost pile or a bucket with food scraps, and you're set!

4. Speaking of composting! Let's talk about accessible composting. Not everyone has the space or the time for large compost piles, big rotating compost bins, or giant barrels to dump their compost into. It may seem daunting, but composting is much easier than some companies and some people make it out to be! As always, google and youtube are free! Look up your options! Countertop compost bins can be anywhere from $5 to $500! More advanced ones obviously come with more advanced settings, but a $5 plastic compost bin from Target is just as valid as a $400 Lumi smart composter! Shop online for a counter top bin, or go to a gardening/hardware store and get a cheap plastic bucket with a lid. Most food scraps and paper are compostable and you can use your own compost as fertilizer for plants, offer it to local gardens and neighborhood gardens, or let friends and family use it in their own gardening endeavors

5. Lastly, contact your local, state, and federal government about legislation and requirements for massive companies and millionaires/billionaires to be liable and responsible for their own environmental impact. We as individuals can do all we can in our day to day to reduce our own waste, but the problem does not fall on us alone. Massive companies, the oil and gas industry, and our own governments have a giant role in this. Keep the pressure on the government to push for stricter laws and regulations. Pressure companies to move towards more eco-friendly methods of production and distribution. Make billionaires and their friends face repercussions to the direct impact they have on the planet. Companies and the people who run them must be held accountable for their hand in the destruction they cause and benefit from. Remember friends, we are not the problem. "Slow fashion" aims to slow down the crazy pace of fashion by releasing just a few lines each year but it's also sustainable. Meaning it's better for the environment, but it's often expensive, limited in size, and hard to find. It's not as convenient as fast fashion. Lately, more people are paying attention to slow fashion, even calling it a trend. However, slow fashion isn't just a trend; it's becoming something we see as essential. During class, my friend started a chat about what we were wearing. When they asked who was wearing 'slow fashion,' only a few of us were. Most of us had clothes from thrift stores, second-hand shops, or local brands. This little conversation showed that slow fashion means different things to different people. Not everyone can afford to buy from slow fashion brands, but many of us are taking steps towards sustainability in our own way.

A study I found looked into how slow fashion affects shoppers. Most people in the study thought sustainable clothes cost more than regular ones. It was interesting that only one person said the higher price meant better quality. The study found that people are pretty price-sensitive and don't want to spend extra to be eco-friendly. This made me think that a lot of folks see sustainable fashion as a pricey luxury that might not even be better quality. (Domingos, Vale and Faria, 2022)

While doing some research, I also found that a lot of people are still confused about what sustainable fashion really is. To clear this up, we need to explain it better so everyone can understand. This is where social media influencers come in—they're helping to spread the word and make slow and sustainable fashion more popular.

Kittieyiyi, also known as Lim Zi Yee, is a Malaysian slow fashion influencer known for her unique style. (not gonna lie, I love her style so much, it's giving me positive vibes) She's big on promoting sustainable fashion, encouraging people to buy locally and reduce waste. She teams up with brands that share her eco-friendly values, showing off their stuff and urging her followers to make greener choices. With her colorful outfits, she proves that being eco-conscious can still be fun and trendy. We're pretty lucky these days with the internet and all. Everything is at our fingertips. You can shop for a whole new wardrobe without even leaving your couch. It's fast and easy, and there are so many deals to be found. With all this convenience, it's no wonder that sustainable fashion is becoming more popular. I'll admit, I wasn't really into it at first. However as I started researching and writing about it, I discovered a whole world of influencers and social media accounts dedicated to sustainable fashion. They've really opened my eyes to the importance of living a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

My #1 post of 2022

Shoutout to my fellow plus-size people!

If you're feeling like you don't know where to shop, or what sort of places you can buy from, or if you just want to try some new places, I have some suggestions and shops that I have found work for me:

1. Pennington's - This is a chain store. It offers sizes 14-32 (x-5x); and it's pretty good for business casual. They offer everything you would find in a more "straight-sized" store, and have several different models with different body sizes and shapes to display their items online. The clothes are made to fit comfortably and the entire experience, I find, is nice because I know I will find clothes I enjoy that actually fit me. They also take into account the difference between "regular", "tall", and "petite"; which is wonderful because not all of us are the same. Check out the sizing chart and measurement guide here. Also, budget accordingly; this place can be a bit pricey, and I try to take advantage of the sales when I go.

2. store.mayakern.com (@mayakern on tumblr) - Maya Kern's store is an independent business and has given me a lot of joy and hope for online shopping. The skirts are all designed by Maya, with some exceptions being the ones that are collaborated on with other artists. All the designs are incredibly unique and very beautiful. I get so many compliments whenever I wear them!! They have wonderful large pockets that don't impede the design or silhouette at all, and they are so incredibly comfortable. I will praise these skirts all my days. Seriously, if you enjoy comfortable skirts with a unique design, give this shop a try! There is a specific sizing chart for the shop, since the skirts have a stretchy waist. The sizes available cover from a 25 inch (64cm) waist to a 66 inch (167cm) waist. Plus, there are lots of other cool items listed in-store, such as pins and journals! Be sure to pay attention to when pre-orders are if you want to order a skirt!

3. Fresh Hot Flavors - This is another store with some very cool items! Skirts, pants, shirts, shorts, and more, all with different and unique designs. They also have an entire line dedicated to Pride; their Pixel Pride Collection. Make sure to measure yourself and take a look at their sizing chart; the store covers size xxs to 6x. I ordered a couple of skirts from this store and they are very comfortable and beautiful!!

4. Witch Bitch Thrift - A thrift store that is run by and marketed to witches! Thrifting is a great way to save money and be eco-friendly. They offer images of their selection online and I've seen sizes ranging from 6x to small. It's been a long time since I found a thrift store with items I admired in my size. Definitely worth it to give this shop a look! They have online shopping and ship items worldwide, so don't worry about location! The store even offers a virtual styling session that customers can book. Clothes aren't the only thing this store offers; they also have a selection of witchy supplies!
