I'm kickstarting the audiobook for "The Internet Con: How To Seize the Means of Computation," a Big Tech disassembly manual to disenshittify the web and make a new, good internet that picks up where the old, good internet left off. It's a DRM-free book, which means Audible won't carry it, so this crowdfunder is essential. Back now to get the audio, Verso hardcover and ebook:

Every trip to Defcon – the massive annual hacker-con in Las Vegas – is a delight. Partly it's the familiar – seeing old friends, getting updates on hacks of years gone by. But mostly, it's the surprises, the things you never anticipated. Defcon never fails to surprise.
I got back from Vegas yesterday and I've just unpacking my suitcase, and with it, the tangible evidence of Defcon's cave of wonders. My gear bag has a new essential: Hak5's malicious cable detector, a little USB gizmo that lights up if it detects surreptitious malicious activity, even as it interdicts those nasty payloads:
https://shop.hak5.org/collections/omg-row2/products/malicious-cable-detector-by-o-mg
(In case you're wondering if it's really possible to craft a malicious USB cable that injects badware into your computer and is visually indistinguishable from a regular cable, the answer is a resounding yes, and of course, Hak5 sells those cables, with a variety of USB tips:)
https://shop.hak5.org/collections/omg-row2/products/omg-cable
But merch is only a sideshow. The real action is in the conference rooms, where hackers update you on the pursuit of their obsessions. These are such beautiful weirdos who pursue knowledge to ridiculous extremes, untangling gnarly hairballs just to follow a thread to its origin point.
For the second year in a row, I caught a presentation from Joseph Gabay about his work on warshopping: slicing up shopping cart wheels and haunting shopping mall parking lots during resurfacing to figure out how the anti-theft mechanism that stops your cart from leaving the parking lot works:
https://www.begaydocrime.com/
And of course, I got to give one of those presentations, "An Audacious Plan to Halt the Internet's Enshittification," to a packed house. What a thrill! It was livestreamed, and if you missed it, you'll be able to catch it on Defcon's Youtube page as soon as they upload it (they've got a lot of uploading to do!):
https://www.youtube.com/@DEFCONConference/videos
Tumblr media
After my talk, I went back to the No Starch Press booth for a book signing – which was amazing, so many beautiful hackers, plus I got to share a signing table with Micah Lee. As I was leaving, Bill Pollock slipped me a giant hardcover art-book, and said, "You're gonna love this."
Tumblr media
I did. The book is Open Circuits: The Inner Beauty of Electronic Components, by Windell Oskay and Eric Schlaepfer, and it is a drop-dead gorgeous collection of photos of electronic components, painstakingly cross-sectioned and polished:
Tumblr media
The photos illustrate layperson-friendly explanations of what each component does, how it is constructed, and why. Perhaps you've pondered a circuit board and wondered about the colorful, candy-shaped components soldered to it. It's natural to assume that these are indivisible, abstract functional units, a thing that is best understood as a reliable and deterministic brick that can be used to construct a specific kind of wall.
Tumblr media
But peering inside these sealed packages reveals another world, a miniature land where things get simpler – and more complex. Inside these blobs of resin are snips of wire, plugs of wax, simple screws, fine sheets of metal in stacks, wafers of plain ceramic, springs and screws.
Tumblr media
Truly, quantity has a quality all its own. Miniaturize these assemblies and produce them at unimaginable scale and the simple, legible components turn into mystical black boxes that only the most dedicated study can reveal. Like every magician's trick, the unfathomable effect is built up through the precise repetition of something very simple.
Tumblr media
A prolonged study of Open Circuits reveals something important about the hacker aesthetic, a collection of graphic design, fashion and industrial design conventions that begins with this realization: that the crisp lines of digital logic can be decomposed into blobby, probabilistic lumps of metal, plastic, and even wax.
Tumblr media
It reminds me of George Dyson's brilliant memoir/history of computing, Turing's Cathedral, where he describes how he and the other children of the scientists building the first digital computers at the Princeton Institute spent their summers in the basement, hand-winding cores for the early colossi their parents were building on the floors above them:
https://memex.craphound.com/2012/03/12/george-dysons-history-of-the-computer-turings-cathedral/
You can see my hacker aesthetic photos in my Defcon 31 photo set:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-taken-desc&safe_search=1&tags=defcon31&user_id=37996580417%40N01&view_all=1
In this video, Eric Schlaepfer illustrates the painstaking work that went into decomposing these tiny, precise components into their messy, analog subcomponents. It's pure hacker aesthetic, and it's mesmerizing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byKyJ0b04Lo
But Open Circuits isn't just an aesthetic journey, it's a technical one. After all, Oskay is co-founder of Evil Mad Scientist Labs, one of the defining places where hardware hackers gather to tear down, pick apart, mod, improve and destroy electronics. The accompanying text is a masterclass in the simple machines that combine together to make complex assemblies:
https://www.evilmadscientist.com/
Defcon is a reminder that the world only seems hermetically sealed and legible to authorized parties with clearance to crack open the box. From shopping cart wheels to thermal fuses, that illegibility is only a few millimeters thick. Sand away the glossy outer layer and you will find yourself in a weird land of wax-blobs, rough approximations, expedient choices and endless opportunities for delight and terror, mischief and care.

5 Injection Moulding Defects & How to Prevent Them
There’s a lot of room for expensive errors when it comes to injection molding. Quality issues in injection-mold products can range from minor surface defects to more serious problems that can affect the safety, performance and function of the product. They can be caused by problems related to the molding process, material use, tooling design or a combination of all three.
But as with any quality problems, knowing how molding defects arise is half the battle (related: How Experienced Importers Limit Product Defects in 3 Stages [eBook]). As an importer or manufacturer of injection-molded products, some knowledge of common molding defects and how to avoid them can help you cut costs related to unsellable goods and product returns.Let’s look at the most common quality defects related to injection molding, what causes them and what you can do to prevent them.
Moulding Defects Often Caused by Process Problems
Some molding defects may be difficult or costly to address. Others can be prevented by adjusting the molding process, without the need to redesign the mold tooling or replace other production equipment. You can typically avoid these defects relatively easily simply by adjusting the flow rate, temperature or pressure of your mold.
Flow lines
Flow lines appear as a wavy pattern often of a slightly different color than the surrounding area and generally on narrower sections of the molded component. They may also appear as ring-shaped bands on a product’s surface near the entry points of the mold, or “gates”, which the molten material flows through. Flow marks won’t typically impact the integrity of the component. But they can be unsightly and may be unacceptable if found in certain consumer products, such as high-end sunglasses.
Causes and remedies for flow lines:
Flow lines are most often the result of variations in the cooling speed of the material as it flows in different directions throughout the mold. Differences in wall thickness can also cause the material to cool at different rates, leaving behind flow lines.injection molding defects For example, molten plastic, cools very quickly during the injection process and flow marks are evident when the injection speed is too slow. The plastic becomes partially solid and gummy while still filling the mold, causing the wave pattern to appear.
Apart from Plastic Toy Mould Exporters We're also dealing in Plastic Toy Injection Mould And Plastic Toy Blow Mould & Etc.
Here are some common remedies for flow lines in injection-molded products:
Increase the injection speed, pressure and material temperature to ensure the material fills the mold before cooling
Round the corners of the mold where wall thickness increases to help keep flow rate consistent and prevent flow lines
Relocate mold gates to create more distance between them and the mold coolant to help prevent the material from cooling too early during flow
Increase the nozzle diameter to raise flow speed and prevent early cooling
2. Burn marks
Burn marks typically appear as black or rust-colored discoloration on an edge or surface of a molded plastic part.injection molding defects Burn marks generally don’t affect part integrity, unless the plastic is burned to the extent of degradation.
Causes and prevention of burn marks
The usual cause for burn marks in injection-molded parts is trapped air, or the resin itself, overheating in the mold cavity during injection. Excessive injection speeds or heating of the material often lead to overheating that causes burns. Consider the following preventative measures to avoid burn marks in molded components:
Lower the melt and mold temperature to prevent overheating
Reduce the injection speed to limit the risk of trapping air inside the mold
Enlarge gas vents and gates to allow trapped air to escape the mold
Shorten the mold cycle time so that any trapped air and resin don’t have a chance to overheat
3. Warping
Warping is deformation that can occur in injection molded products when different parts of a component shrink unevenly. Just as wood can warp when it dries unevenly, plastic and other materials can warp during the cooling process when uneven shrinkage puts undue stress on different areas of the molded part. This undue stress results in bending or twisting of the finished part as it cools. This is evident in a part that’s meant to lie flat but leaves a gap when laid on a flat surface.
Causes and prevention of warping in molded parts:
One of the main causes for warping in injection-molded plastic and similar materials is that cooling happens too quickly. injection molding defects Often excessive temperature or low thermal conductivity of the molten material can worsen the problem. Other times mold design can contribute to warping when the walls of the mold are not of uniform thickness—shrinkage increases with wall thickness. Here are some common ways to prevent warping in your molded parts:
Ensure the cooling process is gradual and long enough to prevent uneven stresses on the material
Lower the temperature of the material or mold
Try switching to a material that shrinks less during cooling (e.g. particle-filled thermoplastics shrink much less than semi-crystalline materials or unfilled grades)
Redesign the mold with uniform wall thickness and part symmetry to ensure greater stability in the part during cooling
We R D Mould & Industries are a renowned  Plastic Toy mould manufacturer in Ahmedabad,Gujarat, India,  provide various types of  Plastic Toy Mould Including  Plastic Toy Injection Mould, Plastic Toy Blow Mould & Etc.
4. Vacuum voids / air pockets
Vacuum voids, or air pockets, are trapped air bubbles that appear in a finished molded component. Quality control professionals typically consider voids to be a “minor” defect (related: 3 Types of Quality Defects in Different Products). injection molding defects But larger or more numerous voids can weaken the molded part in some cases, as there’s air below the surface of the part where there should be molded material.
Common causes of and steps to prevent vacuum voids in molded parts:
One of the chief causes of voids is inadequate molding pressure to force trapped air out of the mold cavity. Other times, the material closest to the mold wall cools too quickly, causing the material to harden and pull the material toward the outside, creating an abscess. The material itself may be especially vulnerable to voids if its density changes significantly from the molten to hardened state. Voids are more difficult to avoid in molded parts which are thicker than 6 mm. Common ways to prevent voids include:
Raise the injection pressure to force out trapped air pockets
Choose a grade of material with lower viscosity to limit the risk of air bubbles forming
Place gates close to the thickest parts of the mold to prevent premature cooling where the material is most vulnerable to voids
5. Sink marks
Sink marks are small recesses or depressions in an otherwise flat and consistent surface of a molded part. These can occur when the inner part of a molded component shrinks, pulling material from the outside inward.
Causes and prevention of sink marks:
Sink marks are similar to vacuum voids but are reversed in cause and effect. injection molding defects Rather than the material cooling too rapidly near the exterior of the part, the material cools too slowly. The resulting shrinkage pulls the outside material inward before it’s had a chance to adequately cool, leading to a depression. As with voids, sink marks are more likely to occur in thicker parts of a component. Here are some steps you can take to prevent this defect:
Increase holding pressure and time to allow the material near the part’s surface to cool
Increase cooling time to limit shrinkage
Design your mold with thinner component walls to allow for faster cooling near the surface

in make has been drilled for a long time by individuals with a genuine talent for imagination. The potential outcomes and strategies you can accomplish with tar are completely perpetual. This draws in many craftsmen and specialists to this great fine art. Whenever you have arranged the important hardware and work area required, you will have all you want to explore and get to know the universe of tar expressions and artworks, including adornments, furniture, stylistic layout, molds, and significantly more!
What Exactly Is Resin?
Gum is a manufactured or normal combination, which is at first in a two-section fluid structure. They are no doubt earthy or yellowish in variety and here and there utilized as pastes and glues. When blended and dry, pitch changes into strong matter or a substance with high consistency (thickness). Most tars, like epoxy, convert into unbending polymers through this relieving or drying process. It is adaptable, somewhat reasonable, and very solid. It is thus that numerous specialists, crafters, and specialists usually work with the medium to create a scope of tar make thoughts.
What Is Natural Resin?
Regular tars are typically gathered from trees, like firs and pines, where the pitch is framed on the outer layer of the bark after the tree has been harmed by normal causes. The reaping of regular saps is an old arrangement customarily made by the Chinese, Japanese and Egyptian people groups and is frequently utilized as polish or stain. In this article, we will look towards understanding manufactured saps, which are all the more ordinarily utilized today.
What Is Synthetic Resin?
Engineered pitches are all the more usually utilized in our cutting-edge industry. These engineered pitch types can be isolated into two classes, thermoplastic sap, which can soften under heat in the wake of restoration, and thermosetting tars, which keep their structure and stay strong under heat once relieved.
Which Type of Resin Is Best for Beginners?
Gums are staggeringly adaptable and ready in different combinations. Do-It-Yourself gum can be very scary for novices from the get-go, however, this is generally the situation while endeavoring to get another ability! Engineered saps are great for all degrees of training.
These kinds of saps incorporate epoxy tar, polyurethane pitch, polyester sap, polyethylene sap, phenolic gum, acrylic tar, alkyd sap, polypropylene sap, and polycarbonate gum, polyamide tar, silicone tar, and polystyrene gum. Epoxy, polyurethane, and polyester tars are all the more broadly utilized for novice pitch creation and are strongly suggested by cutting-edge gum specialists and crafters.
What Are the Characteristics of Epoxy, Polyurethane, and Polyester Resins?
On the off chance that you are a novice in the realm of DIY sap, it is truly critical to ensuring you understand what characteristics to search for inside these sap types. This particularly relies upon what you are needing to make — how rapidly it requires to dry and on the off chance that you might want to get back to the venture. Learn More……

The Yellow Sign $6.99 (Digital Download)
While Lovecraftian music often skews towards dark ambient or metal performances, The Yellow Sign goes takes a more orchestral approach. Composer Graham Plowman has created a fantastic classical soundtrack putting this album on par with any feature film—brooding, menacing, and wonderfully enjoyable.
Tumblr media
Beyond Madness by Aklo $9.00 (Digital Download)
Erich Zann would be jealous. Aklo, like its madness-inducing namesake, is hard to pin down. But this album captures “the beyond” in ways not often heard in modern music. Part noise, part experimental, Beyond Madness is an excellent addition to any Lovecraft fan’s collection.
Tumblr media
Live from Stockholm by Ogham Waite $12.00 (Digital Download)
Ogham Waite, one of Innsmouth’s Deep One inhabitants, and the Amphibian Jazz Band are the mythos’ answer to the lounge stylings of early Tom Waits. Bluesy and moody, this seductively smokey album drips with saltwater. Waite’s performance and delivery are melodious as they are melodic, a great addition to mythos music.

This limited vinyl pressing of Bierce’s unsettling perspective-shifting tale is read by Anthony D. P. Mann and scored by Chris Bozzone. Deities by Tortuga €22.50 ($26.68) + Shipping (Vinyl) €5.00 ($5.93) (Digital Download)
This one showed up randomly on a playlist, and I found myself intrigued. Once I listened to it, I became a fan. Tortuga is a Polish doom metal band whose work is loaded down with intricate and heavy driving riffs inspired by Lovecraft’s writings. It’s good stuff.

Strangers in Court - Review
Did you know the ebook version of Rosemary and Rue has a new novella? It’s true! Time to see how Toby earned her knighthood.
Spoilers up to A Killing Frost.
It’s pre-pond time, so we get a good look at Toby’s other concerns without the fish trauma.
I hadn’t realized Toby found the new knowe while she was pregnant with Gilly - I thought Gilly came afterwards.
Amandine is once again a bad mother, and it’s sad to see Toby put herself down for being a changeling and ‘thin blooded’ and being ‘unable to be a good mother’. I’m glad she’s moved beyond this in the main series.
And a return to thinking she’s Daoine Sidhe and all that entails. I mean, it’s not a ‘return’ because she doesn’t know she’s Dóchas Sidhe, but we know.
A good look at Devin, too, just as Toby’s planning to leave. He’s just as interested in keeping the other changelings in service to him. Which we knew from Rosemary and Rue, but he’s been dead for so many books that I forget.
And it’s good to see Julie not hating Toby. Is she still alive in the main series? Do we see her again after Late Eclipses? I have no idea.
Interesting that Devin ‘let’ Stacey and Mitch go. Did he know that he wasn’t going to get anything else out of them and let them marry and leave out of some paternal pride? Or was there something else going on? Stacey’s not as suspicious as Marcia, but something’s interesting about that couple.
Wow, Toby’s caught on to what August will eventually see and what Simon already knew - they are pets, not people. And she doesn’t even know about the Dóchas Side, August, or Simon yet.
Wow, if she had known that Shadowed Hills was family, if Sylvester had publicly claimed her as his niece, she never would have gone to Devin.
Pixie swarm! The human station attendants must be so confused.
“I can’t imagine being happy about a life full of blood magic and knives.” It is a damn shame Toby never does introspection about her past choices and thoughts, it would be hilarious.
Bergamot and resin - whose magic is what? It’s not the false Queen’s, that’s ice and rowan. The wiki doesn’t mention it. Maybe the person who first found the old knowe?
Wow, I hadn’t realized they meant the old knowe collapsed like a giant sinkhole.
Hi Tybalt!
Toby running for cover as Tybalt falls into the sinkhole - great image.
So the knowe itself has a magical signature, and that’s the bergamot and resin. Interesting.
Fucking hell, Evening. She’s being crushed by the failing knowe. Did she plan to meet Toby for the first time by doing this? Or was this luck?
Did Devin know that the false Queen wasn’t Gilad’s kid?
Dawn died twenty years ago? But in Night and Silence, Toby said she found the new knowe the same week she found Dawn’s killer. Is she going to solve a 20 year old murder?
Evening never struck me as the type to mourn so much over her pretend sister aka her daughter. Was her mourning deliberate?
Maybe it’s time to bring back my “Dawn is Titania” theory, which merges nicely with the “Marcia is Titania” theory.
If Evening only knew that Dawn was important to her, then she would mourn. Oberon’s proved that one of the Three could stand among the Firstborn and not be recognized. If whatever happened to Dawn caused her to ‘reset’ into Marcia, Evening wouldn’t recognize the result. That would explain why the Luidaeg, who cannot lie but might also have just been mind-whammied by whatever magic’s keeping Titania from being recognized, said Dawn was Evening’s daughter while she was younger than August. Everything from the Patrick/Dianda short stories implies that Dawn is older than August and hasn’t just showed up recently. The mind whammy magic would take care of it.
What’s this about a token for every pureblooded death in the kingdom? First I’ve heard of it from anyone, including Arden and April.
Toby, don’t accept Devin’s condition on leaving. Just do it.
Hi Etienne!
Oh, kid Rayseline is so happy to see Toby. She could have been so happy growing up. Sylvester and Luna are happy to see Toby! Wow, how things have changed.
Toby, you are trading a life debt for Dawn’s memorial orb to try to dowse your way to why the knowe collapsed? So you’ve always tried to do the impossible.
Dowsing to a new knowe, ok. Hi Tybalt!
Tybalt, why are you surprised and/or disappointed that Toby’s willing to die to do this? You know how changelings are treated. You know how you’ve been treating her. This is why she thinks you hate her.
Where did Tybalt disappear off to?
Does Dawn’s memorial glass ball actually have any of her own magic in it?
“The ball could not, as it turned out, deal with sand.”
So who warded the beach? Was it the Luidaeg?
If so, this beach is nowhere near her apartment, and as far as I know, nowhere near Goldengreen. My knowledge of San Francisco geography is spotty at best.
Did Dawn create this knowe as a place to get away from Evening?
It is good to see Stacy and Mitch.
Score another point for ‘Toby wins by talking to the knowe’.
Not that Toby knows it, but I think it’s a bad idea to give a ball of of her magic to Evening Winterrose.
So she definitely didn’t solve Dawn’s murder. Why does she think she did? Did she get mind whammied to think of Dawn that way?
So Sylvester and Evening conspired to get Toby knighted. Did Evening see this as an opportunity? Get close to Toby to better figure out how to kill her?
This answers a lot of questions, but raises so many more.
