I wonder which one is my new one...

For context: I just got this mid 2012 MacBook pro, off ebay. There's a problem with the keyboard and I'm currently waiting on a new top shell to arrive and hopefully fix the problem.

As to why I'm replacing my mid 2007: that's two fold.

First off: it's running windows xp, not too big of a deal, I like xp. But I would prefer to run something more up to date.

Secondly: the battery doesn't work, and I can't be bothered to replace it.

I do think I'm gonna keep the old MacBook since it's a very nice machine that served me well

how to copy a CD to your computer via iTunes

So you want to copy a CD to your computer, but you don't know how to do this! Never fear, it is very easy to do. This will be very detailed because I am assuming that some of you youngsters have never done this. I have been doing this since, like, 2003 when I first got an iPod. This method allows you to have the files on your computer, to add them to an iPod or to add them to your iPhone. You can also copy the files out of the iTunes media library and add them to anything else you'd like manually. For this post, I will be doing this in iTunes for mac, but you can also do this in iTunes for windows. It will just look slightly different. So here it goes:

Step 1: install iTunes on your computer. If you have a mac, you already have it, as it is a default system program. it will be called "music" if you have a newer mac. I have an old mac so it's called iTunes on mine. If you are on windows you can get iTunes for free here on the apple website.

Step 2: Have a CD drive in your computer or externally attached. If you have a modern computer that does not have a CD drive, you can purchase an external one that you can attach via usb. There are many examples that you can purchase via Newegg for as low as $20 USD. You can also buy an old computer (typically one ca. 2013 or earlier) and it will likely still have one onboard. Ebay is an excellent place for that. I use my 2012 macbook pro for this.

Step 3: Obtain a CD. You can do this for free by going to your local public library and checking some CDs out. Otherwise, you can buy them used inexpensively at local record stores, estate sales or thrift shops. You may also buy them new via an artist's show, their bandcamp page, their website or a local record store. Do what works for you. Personally I copy lots of library CDs.

Step 4: Put the CD into your CD drive.

Step 5: Open iTunes. Sometimes depending on how your iTunes is set up, your computer may actually pop up with a dialog box asking you if you want to import the CD via iTunes. If this happens, click "Yes". iTunes may also prompt you with the CD when you open it. Otherwise, when you open iTunes you can click on the little CD icon in the top ribbon, which takes you to a page that looks like this:

click "Yes" iTunes will then import the CD to your library. The CD, depending on age may not pop up with the correct (or any) metadata. That is, it may not have song titles, album art, artist names etc etc. That's OK, because you can fix that yourself. iTunes will make a little noise when it is finished importing and will pop you back to your library with the new album imported.

Step 6: Eject the CD

Step 7: Fix any metadata. You can do this by right clicking on the album which gives you this context menu:

Step 8: This gives you a dialog box that looks like this:

in this box, you can manually type whatever you want into all of the fields. This will edit the information for ALL songs in the album. If you want to edit a single song, open the album and right click on the song, and select "song info" in the context menu. The dialog looks just like this:

In these boxes you can also add album artwork uploaded from any jpg or png on your computer, you can add lyrics, whatever notes you want etc. It saves this information with the file.

Congrats! You've copied a CD to your computer. If you want to locate the actual MP3 files, they can be found in Music < iTunes media < Music < "Artist Name" on mac. In Windows, you'll find them in Music <iTunes < iTunes media < Music < "Artist Name" Since you copied them from a CD, they are not DRM protected files and you can do whatever you want with them afterwards.

Another fun fact: you can also do this with audio books on CD. Your local public library almost certainly has a lot of these, and if you are going on a trip where you internet connection might not be good, having them as offline files on your phone might be a good solution for you!

The second day I had it the wifi stopped working on my MacBook pro and Apple tried to charge me $50 to verify it was under warranty. After a month the power cord died and Apple refused to honor the warranty and wanted to charge me $80+ for a new one, I turned to ebay instead. Halfway through the published life the battery literally exploded.

I had to babysit the office iphone for the last month and putting it on my wifi absolutely destroyed my ability to get on the internet with any other device.

So of course I gotta have a TiBook on here, right? I'm a Mac laptop collector, that's gotta be one of them, right up there with a clamshell G3 for some people. I'm not personally interested in a clamshell G3, though.

The 2015 15" MacBook Pro with the R7 M370 graphics is just like... the highest end Apple laptop that was made before they switched to a USB Type C-only port arrangement and got rid of the function keys and used a fragile shitty keyboard. It's right at the end of that gap between "the old Apple" and "Apple is back". These hover around $200 right now.

The M1 Pro MacBook Pro is my Holy Grail right now. They're still pretty expensive to pick up secondhand of course, $1100 for one that's pretty beat up on eBay, with lots of little nicks and dings, a scratch in the trackpad, and no included charger. But that's a laptop with an M1 Pro, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Apple still wants over $2000 for these in the refurbished store, and $1100 is also what Apple charges for a base model 13" M2 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.

It's not gonna happen soon, I'm still saving for a car, but maybe somewhere down the line, it'll be a little bit easier.

I decided to snagg a 2009 MacBook Air because I'm a little impulsive, I got a discount offer from an eBay seller, and I saw it was supported by OCLP and had INCREDIBLE morbid curiosity about how the machine would handle Big Sur through Sonoma. We'll see how THAT goes.

Spontaneous Tokyo shopping

One of the things that made this month’s trip to Japan even more enjoyable was the weak Yen.

Everything was significantly cheaper than on our last visit, back in March. It made food and drink laughably cheap and meant I could pick up a few gifts for family, as well as some clothes, without any guilt.

And even though I wasn’t planning on it at all (honest), I also ended up upgrading my laptop while I was in Tokyo. The combination of tax-free shopping plus the favourable exchange rate meant I saved £400 on a new Macbook Air.

Though I didn’t get it from the Apple Store.

They’ve stopped offering tax-free shopping to visitors, so I ended up going to the much less chic, but much cheaper Yodabashi Camera in Shinjuku. Where the Apple Store is sleek, minimalist and calm, Yodobashi Camera is an overwhelming tsunami of noise and signage that can be quite the assault on the senses.

There, an extremely helpful sales assistant helped me find the right model (with a US keyboard, no UK keyboards were on sale) and I also picked up an iPad Mini for my other half. Combined, they were still cheaper than a single Macbook Air in the UK.

I didn’t even unbox my laptop until the day before flying home, as I was too busy going out and having fun (!!!) but with a couple of days use under my belt, I really like it.

Gone is the annoying touchbar at the top of the keyboard, replaced with real live function keys! The screen is bigger and it’s much, much lighter. And with an M2 chip, it feels quite a lot faster than my MacBook Pro - which has been reset and is now on eBay, waiting to go to a new home.
