Medical insurance helps cover the cost of hospitalisation and treatment, or helps you financially if you experience an illness or an accident. The most popular type of medical insurance is hospital and surgical – you may also know it as a ‘medical card’. a) Benefits of medical insurance Medical costs are high, and they are increasing every year. A hospital and surgical insurance policy helps you cover these costs. But some policies don’t cover pre-existing conditions, so make sure to check the fine print or ask your agent before subscribing. Other types of medical insurance, such as critical illness insurance, gives you a lump sum payout that you can use however you wish. This is helpful to cover the indirect costs of illness – say, if you need a few months’ off work to recover, or if you need to fork out for special dietary requirements. You can’t foresee when you’ll fall sick, and how much it will cost, so having medical insurance is an important safety net. b) Types of medical insurance Hospital and surgical. If you’re subscribed to an investment-linked policy, your plan may come with add-ons (also known as ‘riders) that give you medical coverage. Around 70% of medical policies that are sold in Malaysia have been sold with investment-linked products. A standalone medical policy is much more affordable if you are a young adult, but the premiums will increase as you age. Your medical coverage also stops as soon as you stop paying your premiums. On the other hand, an ILP that includes a medical rider will be more expensive, but its premiums won’t increase as you age. ILPs also have a cash value component, but this is not guaranteed, as it depends on investment performance. But if you stop paying your premiums, the cash value helps pay for the policy, so you may still enjoy medical insurance coverage. Is there any tax relief? Both life insurance and medical insurance are eligible for tax relief. But how much you can claim depends on your insurance type, and whether it’s a standalone policy: Relief type (if filing in 2020) Limit Life insurance and EPF INCLUDING not through salary deduction RM7,000 Insurance premium for education or medical benefit INCLUDING not through salary deduction RM3,000 If your medical insurance is a standalone policy, you can claim up to 100% of your total premium paid under the medical benefit category. Medical costs are increasing, so it’s important to get hospitalisation and surgery coverage. If you need more coverage, or coverage for specific areas, you may want to consider other medical insurance policies, such as critical illness insurance. But this depends on various factors, such as affordability, whether you have a family history associated with any of the critical illnesses covered, or if you’d feel safer knowing that you have a bigger financial safety net. Wed, 22 April 2020 This week, Korean Air started providing protective gowns and goggles to all cabin crew members.

Korean Air’s cabin crews on all flights will now wear goggles in addition to masks and gloves, while protective gowns are being provided on medium and long-haul inbound flights as overseas COVID19 cases continue to increase significantly. All protective gowns, masks and gloves are discarded after the flight and personal goggles are sanitized before reuse. Korean Air describes the safety gear as "light and easy to wear". Grab Holdings Inc., formerly known as MyTeksi and GrabTaxi, is a Singapore based transportation network company. In addition to transportation, the company offers food delivery and digital payments services via mobile app. The company was originally founded in Malaysia and later moved its headquarters to Singapore. It now operates in the Southeast Asian countries of Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. he idea of creating a taxi-booking mobile app for Southeast Asia similar to those being pioneered in the US first came from Anthony Tan, who is the youngest of the three brothers of the family that operates Tan Chong Motors, the authorised distributor for Nissan cars in Malaysia. When a friend visited him in Malaysia, Anthony heard his friend complaining about the horrible experience of riding taxis in the country. In particular, his friend was concerned that his taxis may be taking an incorrect route or overcharging him.Taking inspiration from Garrett Camp’s ride sharing concept, Anthony decided to take this problem up as a project while studying at Harvard Business School. When he presented the project to his professors, the comments he received were that this project was ”difficult to implement; despite the success of other rid hailing services in the U.S. such as Uber. The project won second place at the Business Plan Contest at Harvard Business School. The app was also selected as the finalist at Harvard’s Minimum Viable Product Funding award. According to the company’s chief technology officer, Theo Vassilakis , the secret to succeeding in a region of 11 countries and more than 650 million people is this: “Always think hyperlocal.”

Thailand targets 2023 for the BULLET TRAIN

After years of delays and much debate, it's finally happening. #Bullettrains are coming to #Thailand.

With one project under construction, another approved and others being considered, many in the country are questioning whether high-speed rail (HSR) will be the right fit for the country. "This is going to be a big change for Thailand," says Thanet Sorat, an adviser to Thailand's Senate Committee on Transportation, vice president of shipping company, V-Serve, and president of the Thai Authorized Customs Brokers Association. He hopes to see sleek trains pinballing around the country at 155 mph (250 kph) within five years. Both projects currently in the works will employ Chinese HSR technology. Though Thailand declined Chinese loans, the projects are considered a part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a plan that aims to connect China to the rest of Asia through new transport infrastructure. Bangkok to Pattaya in 45 minutes Expected to open in 2021 to replace Bangkok's 103-year-old Hualamphong Station, a massive new rail hub in the city's Bang Sue district will serve passengers using both HSR and the country's existing railway network, which is being upgraded from single to dual track. Tied to this, on October 24, a conglomerate led by Thailand's CP Group signed a contract with the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) for the construction of a HSR line linking Bangkok's two airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, to three eastern provinces. It will operate in addition to the existing Airport Rail Link, an elevated train that connects Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok's metro system. The planned line, beginning from Don Mueang then passing through Bang Sue, will also stop at Makkasan in central Bangkok before proceeding to Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Sriracha and Pattaya, a major tourist destination located 75 miles (120 km) south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. Expected to begin service in 2024, the 137-mile line will terminate at U-Tapao Airport, outside of Pattaya in Rayong province.

The new line will connect Bangkok's two airports with U-Tapao Airport in Rayong province, an industrial and fishing hub.- Pailin Wedel/Bloomberg/Getty Images The government plans to move some 10% of flights from Bangkok to a redesigned U-Tapao in order to ease congestion at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. "To do that, they need a transportation link between the airports, and it could be a good opportunity for HSR," says Jittichai Rudjanakanoknad of Chulalongkorn University's Department of Civil Engineering. A conglomerate led by Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group (CP), which also includes the China Railway Construction Corp., will cover an investment of 224 billion baht ($7.4 billion) in exchange for real estate concessions and a 50-year license to operate the line. One goal is to provide easy access to the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), a zone that Thanet says constitutes 80% of total foreign investment in Thailand.

Supporters point out that HSR will reduce travel time between Bangkok's two airports to just 20 minutes, and shuttle tourists to Pattaya in less than an hour. They also predict it will reduce traffic on highways, curtailing accidents in a country with one of the world's highest road fatality rates. As it stands, transferring between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang entails a shuttle bus journey that can last an hour or more during Bangkok's notoriously sluggish rush hours. Reaching Pattaya from Suvarnabhumi requires haggling with a taxi driver, taking a cramped van or traveling across town to catch a bus from Ekkamai Terminal for the two-hour ride. "Linking the three airports is a noble objective," says Ruth Banomyong, director of the Center for Logistics Research at Bangkok's Thammasat University. But he and other critics question whether HSR is the right choice, given the high cost and relatively short distances involved. Some argue that dual-track rail would suffice for the eastern provinces, which currently lack any railway at all. The SRT said in September that 80% of land needed for the three-airport line has been secured for expropriation, and the Bangkok Post has reported that 3,000 houses will need to be demolished. Adding that gas and electrical lines may also be affected, Jittichai says, "it's not easy to relocate people. Some are going to court and it takes quite a long time." Bangkok to Khorat in 77 minutes

Construction of the China-Laos railway is now underway in Yunnan province. - Ren Dong/China News Service/Visual China Group/Getty Images Expected to open in 2023, Thailand's maiden HSR line is now under construction beside existing railway tracks in Nakhon Ratchasima, a northeastern province also known as Khorat. Unlike on the three-airport line, Chinese state firms are responsible for nearly all of the construction. Beginning at Bang Sue, this 157-mile "Khorat line" will stop at Don Mueang Airport and the historic capital of Ayutthaya before cutting northeast to Saraburi and Pak Chong near the popular Khao Yai National Park. It will terminate at Khorat -- at least until the track is extended. The government's long-term plan is to extend the line north to Nong Khai, located 370 miles (600 km) northeast of Bangkok and home to a popular border crossing that enables travelers to reach the Lao capital of Vientiane. After crossing the Mekong River on a new bridge, passengers would be able to continue north on another HSR line now being built in Laos. The ultimate goal is to link these lines with Kunming in southern China's Yunnan province. The Khorat line has drawn more criticism than the three-airport line due to the investment of 179 billion baht ($5.9 billion) worth of public funds. Critics argue that northeast Thailand is not on the agenda for most tourists, while also expressing frustration about a lack of transparency when Thailand's military government approved the project in 2017. In a report first published by The Diplomat, Pechnipa Dominique Lam of the Thailand Development Research Institute estimated the line "would need to ferry 50,000-85,000 passengers every day for 20 years in order to pay back the costs of investment." At only 5,000-25,000 riders per day, the Transport Ministry's own forecasts fall well short of those numbers.

"Taking into account the benefits arising from the HSR, such as passengers' time savings on travel," she went on, "the economic case in favor of doing the project is still outweighed by its financial losses." "This line is mostly influenced by China," adds Jittichai. "If Thailand builds it, we might not get much benefit. But if we don't build it, we could lose other benefits from China. That is what the government is thinking." Competitive transport market

Both the SRT and the state-run bus service have long been operating at a deficit. - David Luekens   "There is a strong risk that HSR might not be successful because of existing transport connectivity," according to Ruth. Both the SRT and the state-run bus service have long operated at financial losses as passenger numbers decline each year. The state-run airline, THAI, is also struggling as budget carriers like Air Asia and Nok Air compete with fares from Bangkok to more than 20 other Thai cities for as little as $20. Critics also wonder if enough Thai people can afford HSR in a country with a notably wide economic divide and a minimum wage of only 300 baht ($10) per day. Although most middle-class Thais can manage the proposed 330 baht fare for a bullet train from Bangkok to U-Tapao, and 500 baht to Khorat, many of them are attached to their private automobiles. As for the working class, they may end up sticking to buses and vans that cost roughly a quarter of the proposed ticket prices for HSR. Regular trains are even cheaper and the coming dual tracks will shorten travel times on existing railway lines, adding another layer of competition. While waiting for a train at Khorat's 119-year-old railway station, Daeng Tungsunern, a Khorat native who sells second-hand goods, tells CNN, "I did not know about the HSR project until it was already being built. I will not use it because it will be too expensive for my budget." "Just like in Japan"

HSR track construction is now taking place beside the existing single rail track in Noen Sung district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. - David Luekens In the future, Thanet envisions Thailand as a central hub in a Southeast Asia linked by bullet trains. He also sees value in the transfer of technology, suggesting that "20 years into the future, we should be able to produce high-speed trains ourselves and not only buy them from China or Japan." Jittichai agrees HSR could become worthwhile "if looking at a broader network, for example, if the Thai lines can be connected to the Chinese network or Singapore, or even to central Asia and Europe." To that end, the government is considering additional HSR lines running north from Bangkok to Nakhon Sawan, Phitsanulok and Chiang Mai; south through Hua Hin, Surat Thani and Hat Yai; and further east from Rayong to Chanthaburi and Trat near Cambodia. Subsequent projects might extend the proposed southern line through Malaysia to Singapore, while a northern line could link with a western extension to Myanmar and onwards to India. The SRT is already promoting these additional projects, but the extremely high price tags are likely to prohibit them from taking shape any time soon. "If the cost of construction and technology becomes cheaper, that is when you will see these other lines," says Jittichai. Back inside Khorat's railway station, Paitoon Tikul, a retired soldier who rides trains and his bicycle around Thailand to raise money for charity, says, "I think HSR will be useful for certain people. But the cost of these projects is very expensive, and I worry about corruption. In my opinion, it would be better to use that money for improving schools, hospitals and more useful things." As a roughly 50-year-old train clinks into the station, railway police captain Nutthawoot Sawanphomrat interjects, saying "I think HSR will be good for the country and the economy. Snorkelling in Redang - Malaysia

This was the first ever trip I took by myself, scary but it had to be done as I believe it was the only way I’d grow interns of experiencing life. 

On what was an eight hour bus ride to Kuala Terengganu (KT) one of Malaysia smallest states situated northeast of Kuala Lumpur the country’s capital. I vividly recall arriving in the early hours of the morning in KT at what I can only describe as the scariest bus stop ever. 

Although I had found myself on unfamiliar ground, I remained optimistic about everything because I also knew that adapting to the environment would come easy to me as all the good reviews I had read online prior to my trip pointed out.

As I waited for almost two hours for a bus transfer, I finally managed to get one and off I was to the island of Redang. Driving along the roads of KT headed towards the fairy station where I had to get a boat which took me to the island itself as there were no direct roads to it, I was in disbelief by what I saw because I never really thought Malaysia had areas that depict poverty. 

If you’ve been to Malaysia you’ll know that the country finds its self firmly among the upper-middle income countries. So seeing that side of it was shocking but it was interesting to take note off.

Fast forward, I got to the fairy station, boarded a boat with various other tourists and residents on a boat ride of about forty-five minutes, in all honestly I felt as if the boat would flip over. Might I remind you again this was my first time finding myself deep within the ocean.

As I sat quietly trying to calm myself down nothing felt as liberating as when I finally saw the island that was surrounded by clear blue coral water.

The beach hotel at which I stayed, Redang Bay was so welcoming from its boat port, they offered me a drink and one of the workers helped me carry my luggage to my reserved room.  Because I only had planned to stay for three days, I wanted to fit in all that had to tick off on my bucket list.

So I immediately got changed and went snorkelling. This was something I had never done before, it was scary but the trained diver I was with assured me that everything would be fine.

All I needed to worry about was relaxing and enjoying myself but I swear I probably gulped a lot of the ocean that day, which I must say tasted like shit not that I know what shit tastes like but I really don’t know how sea animals survive in such crappy water.

But as much as I kept drinking the salt water the more I wanted to stay in the ocean. The diver somewhat also made the experience more thrilling as he revealed that there were sharks but they wouldn’t hurt me.

The following day I wanted to snorkel again, I actually snorkelled for all three days and every day the guide would take me and group of other tourists to different areas of the ocean.

On the Second day the guide threw me in the ocean, he told me to take of my life jacket and to swim and have fun he would come get me and I remember thinking to myself that this was it, the end was near.

Funny enough I actually did what he said and I ended up having a blast. This is how I literally learned how to be comfortable when swimming in the ocean.

All in all Redang was beautiful met amazing people and actually got to touch and be up close with a lot of sea creatures. The only down side is that I would have preferred to had stayed a lot longer but seeing that it was my first time it was understandable.

Redang is one of the islands in Malaysia I would definitely recommend you visit at least once in your life.

Helena Khadikova, jigit artist, Khadikov Jigit Riders, Zippos Circus

Czech circus artist Helena Khadikova was born into the Faltynys circus family and is now one of the featured trick acrobats with the Khadikov Jigit Riders. She is married to Tamerlan Khadikov, the troupe's leader, who comes from Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city. Helena also does Western and juggling acts. This season the Khadikov Jigit Riders appear with Zippos Circus in its show Jigit, which runs at Central Park, East Ham in London from 4-9 May and tours until November. She chats to Liz and Adrian Arratoon.

The Widow Stanton: Where were you born? Helena Khadikova: My family comes from Prague but I was born here in London. My family was on tour with Gerry Cottle's Circus. They were four years on tour with just a week or two break. I was born, actually, in the caravan. I even have a British birth certificate.

What did your family do? There was a troupe that did a unicycle act, throwing knives and juggling. It was all brothers and sisters and after they got married they brought their husbands and wives into the act. In 1994, my parents split up and started to work on their own. The troupe has continued and they're working in England now at Planet Circus OMG!. My uncle is there as well. My parents continue to work in the circus but they're in the Czech Republic this year. And my brother, Jindra, is also in the circus. He’s 17 now and is continuing the Faltynys tradition.

When did you start performing? I was four years old. I started juggling with three rings. It wasn't that I had to perform, it was just what I liked to do. But when I was 14 or 15, it was because I had to. [Laughs] That was different because when I was a child it was just what I wanted. Every circus I worked in when it was the open days or open shows, it was nice to work.

Did you go to school? I was at school for two months in the year and the rest of the year my mother taught me.

Haven't you appeared with Zippos before? Yes, I was here in 2007 with my family, my parents, who did a Western act. My brother was a small child that time. I was doing a juggling act with footballs. I changed my costume for different places, a Chelsea dress, Manchester United…

How did you meet your husband? We were working in a park in Holland in 2013, similar to Disneyland. I was there with my parents and he was there with his parents and their troupe. We started a relationship but we still didn't live together or work together. I did my thing, he did his thing. Then in 2014, we started to live together.

Has jigit always been in his family? His father was a jigit or Cossack rider and he brought Tamerlan up doing the same so he could continue with it.

So who is in the troupe at the moment? Me and my husband, my mother-in-law, Rimma Khadikova, and two other male riders. We try to keep the same line-up but we may change the riders every two or three years depending on whether they want to stop or continue. Normally we'd be six or seven in the troupe but now it's getting difficult with the paperwork. My mother-in-law is very important. She stands in the middle and directs the horses. She's really good but she hasn't always done it. My father-in-law did it but he died. He'd just look at the horses and they knew they had to work. When she looks at them, they're like, 'I will do what I want'. But the rider also has to talk to the horse. I talk to mine. I sit on him but I tell him to go faster, or encourage him. I talk to him and although he may not understand the words he understands the intention.

How many horses have you got? We have five at the moment but normally we need six, so we'll by one here in England as soon as possible.

Is it unusual for a woman to do the trick riding? Yes, it is and I am the first woman in the history of jigit to do the five high. Here we don't have enough people. It's not so easy to do it. We might do it for a festival but even that doesn't always work because as soon as my daughter, Diana, was born, I got a bit worried because I don't use any safety devices and it's not so safe.

At Christmas we saw the Assa Troupe of jigit riders perform in Girona. They are all women with one man. So we were excited when we found out you were actually performing at Zippos as a featured rider. Could you ride a horse before you joined the troupe? Yes, I could ride a horse but not like this. [Laughs] Just for fun. It's a funny story; my husband never wanted to have girls riding a horse in the troupe. He said it didn't look so nice because every girl we saw doing it always looked scared and as if she was thinking too hard about how to do it. Then we had a contract for seven people, but one of the men couldn't come for some reason. They all need visas and I don't need one, so I said, 'Let's try it'. He said: "OK, we don't have any other option because we can't lose the contract and we need to be there with seven riders." So from that time I started and everybody loves it even more and they say: "Oh, she's good!" My husband does the most difficult tricks but he's a man, but when I hang from my leg, they say: "Oh, it's fantastic!" and he says: "Oh, I never wanted you in the act but now it's…" [Laughs]

How long did it take to learn? I'm still practising now, to be honest, but it was three or four months before I could do it. It depends, if somebody is scared, it takes longer. It's also important to get a connection with the horse. You saw that I just ride one horse. That's my horse. I don't change horses because I don't trust them and they don't trust me. My husband was born into it; he doesn't care which horse he sits on but I'm not like that. I worry; I know my horse and we trust each other, so I'm not afraid, but if Tamerlan told me to go and practise on the brown one, I would have to but I wouldn't like it.

Explain jigit for someone who hasn't seen it. I say I'm an acrobat on a horse because it’s the easiest thing. If I say Cossack or jigit they don't understand.

We should add that the horses are galloping round the ring… Yes, and that's even slow for us. We have a faster tempo normally. I can feel it if they're going slow because the faster they go the easier it is actually.

Which is your hardest trick? Hanging from one foot? The hardest for me was the five [third photo], but this I don't do any more. The hanging is the hardest. After Diana was born it was not so easy for me to pull myself back up on to the horse again. The funny thing is if the horse is sleepy I get up earlier. When he's galloping the movement helps me, but if he gets scared by somebody in the audience, he breaks his tempo, and I have to get back up full power. You also have to have strong arms because you have to pull yourself up.

How long after you'd had Diana were you back in the ring? Three weeks afterwards. But I didn't do the hanging. That act I did after three months because I was afraid of hurting myself. I shouldn't have done anything until six weeks but three weeks after I was already doing the first tricks.

Your core muscles must be so strong… [Tests Helena's biceps and abs] You’re like a rock! We're a bit jealous…  [Laughs] Yes.

Do you enjoy touring? Yes, we are good friends with everybody and three or four times a week we are training, working out, with the girls and with Emilion Delbosq; he's our leader, he's great. You can imagine, I have a small child – she's seven months old – so I'm always busy. Five horses, one dog, cook for my husband, a lot of transport for the horses, our caravan, a small truck, a small car, then make-up for three shows, shower, then still I go to train for the half an hour to lose more weight. I got back already to my performing weight but just to work out. My husband isn't really happy because he says: “If you over-train it's hard ” but he works out a lot also… but he doesn't wake up as early as me. He's gets up around 8am and my daughter wakes me up around 6-6.30am because her teeth are coming through.

You must have worked all around the world… Yes, I have worked many times in England, I spent six years in Holland with my 'old' family; I speak very good Dutch. In Germany we were every Christmas in Europa-Park, in Dresden, in Augsburg, we've been to Malaysia. Then we performed at the Massy Festival in France, where we won bronze, and in Cirque Éducatif and we won gold. That was with my 'new' family.

So your whole life you've been in the circus. Do you have a base anywhere? Yes, we have a home 20km from Prague. We have a big farm where the horses have their own stables and we have a house with a lot of space. My daughter, was born at home and after two weeks we came to the circus and after three weeks I start. The boys are with us there; sometimes they go home for one or two years, sometimes they stay with us.

What has been the highlight of your career? I was six years in the park and to be honest it did nothing for me. I did my job but it was always in one place. I love circus and travelling; I love it. I can't be in one place for long. If it's one week, two weeks, OK. But like one year, two years? [huffs] I get crazy. I'm not used to it. And in Scandinavia when we were working with Cirkus Arnardo we travelled every day; every day putting up and pulling down this big tent.
