Tomorrow is American Thanksgiving, and I'm hosting a metric ass-ton of people. With that in mind, I'm jumping the gun a bit to get this one out, so I don't have to stress about it tomorrow. ^_^;

In Chapter 21 of Choices: Winter, "His Firecracker," Callie receives a missive from one Mr. Qi about her trip to the Skull Cavern. When she asks Marlon and Rasmodius for their opinions, both men share disquieting information about her mysterious interlocutor. Later that evening, a combination of alcohol and watching Callie interact with Sam (and memories of June) spurs Sterling's jealousy back to life.

“Calm down?” echoed Sterling, not touching the glass. “You’re practically vibrating,” Shane grumbled. “Your partner will join us soon enough.” His eyes flicked once more to where Callie stood talking with Sam at the entrance to the arcade, looking as gorgeous as ever. Despite the way Sam’s eyebrows pinched above the bridge of his nose, the blond’s eyes kept drifting down from her face. Sterling could feel his jealousy sit up and take keen notice. Callie and Kai were very different people, but…. “I know that,” Sterling said, even as he kept an eye on the pair. It didn’t help that June kept hanging around her with his sweet words and ‘innocent’ touches and little gifts, much as he had with Sterling with previous partners of Sterling’s. Sterling’s jaw tightened when Callie laid a hand on Sam’s shoulder, her face painted with concern. “So come on,” said Shane. “Let’s take our shots already.” Yeah, maybe… maybe that wasn’t such a bad idea after all. Maybe it’d help him soothe his jealousy back to slumber. He knew better.

Hey, we're in the final month of Choices!

*studiously ignores the sighs of relief*

And in order to finish by New Year's Eve, we have a couple of weeks with three updates. Lucky you?

In Chapter 22 of Choices: Winter, "Possessive," Callie meets up with Henry to do a spot of fishing. While trying to avoid discussing her own love life, she learns a bit more of Henry's thoughts on Jeric. That afternoon, Callie takes Sterling at his word and goes up to hear June play for the first time in weeks. In doing so, she manages to negotiate a bit of business with Aideen. It goes well, until Ms. Jo inserts herself into the conversation. When Jeric learns what his mum had to say, he is not pleased.

“Have you never visited the Ferngill Opera House or the Farisian Ballet?” asked Ms. Jo, sounding both vaguely shocked and knowingly condescending. It was a specific tone Callie had heard from her mother her entire life. “But I’ve heard tale of what an educated and cultured woman you are.” “Not— not of late, no,” said Aideen, her mouth tight. Before Callie could interject, Ms. Jo said, “Pity. Ah well, my dear, you’re not that old, I suppose, and still have time to broaden your horizons if you so desire. Not that there’s anything wrong with enjoying more provincial productions, of course. They’re quite quaint and enchanting in their own way.” As Aideen’s cheeks stained red, Callie said, “Art elevates the spirit wherever it’s found, Ms. Jo.” Aideen’s green eyes darted to Callie. “You’re familiar with Mrs. Sinclair?” “Oh yes,” said Ms. Jo with a smile full of not-so-hidden daggers. “Ms. Callie is a very good friend to my Jeri. I’ve delighted in seeing him blossom with her friendship and the knowledge that he’s found... appropriate companionship.” “Ms. Jo—!”

Rival Hearts

Since Callie already caught and wed Sterling, I opted to turn on the Rival Hearts Events for Mateo and Aideen. (Mateo has certain romance events that do not trigger with Polysweet installed, so if and when I get around to pursuing them, I'm looking at doing a different save at some point).

Mateo makes a strong first impression (though not necessarily a great one) by nearly running Aideen over as they flee the cave system.

She is not amused.

As soon as they disappear, Aideen feels the need to complain to Callie.

Callie is fond of both Mateo and Aideen. She also woke up that morning and chose violence.

Always on My Mind

A couple of days after Mateo nearly ran poor Aideen over, Callie met up with her in the course of hunting more Rock Crabs. Aideen's encounter was still very much on her mind:

I'm still physically wiped out and my head's too fuzzy to do 'real' writing/revisions on my story, but I'm just coherent enough that I want to chitter-chatter about my fic.

So in the course of working on Choices, one of the things I've spent an inordinate amount of time on is figuring out the 'cohorts' for the valleyfolk. What I mean by 'cohorts' are the groups of people who are in a similar age-range to one another and then further subdivided into 'natives' (aka 'people who grew up together in the valley') and 'transplants.' After all, one of the things I'm trying to accomplish is interweaving three large expansion mods with the base game and coming up with a cohesive whole, and that means knowing who from the various mods have known each other basically forever.

Under the cut, I break down who's in what cohort. I may or may not later flesh out my thinking about why I plopped certain people into certain groups, mostly because when I started to do so with this list, the post grew disgustingly (more) bloated. If I do, I'll probably do a separate post for each cohort. After all, this is the site for rambling about this sort of random stuff, right? 😅 (Edit: that's exactly how I spent my afternoon. I divided the population of the valley into five different cohorts/generations. Ages are based on how old they are/would be during the course of Choices. Yeah, so sorry for spamming with my word vomit about my different cohorts of Choices. This is the last post on it.

Anyways, here are more random thoughts on Gen 5 (under 18) from this post here. Let's see what I can crank out before pizza arrives and I zone out for the night.

—Alright, I know this has to have bugged somebody, so let’s get this out of the way. Why is Maru only 17-18 in Choices? Two reasons: 1) Maru has always read as the youngest of the bachelors/bachelorettes in Stardew Valley to me, particularly with the way both Demetrius and Dr. Harvey treat her, and 2) at the beginning of Choices, there would be no valleyfolk between the ages of 13-17. Ariah and Oliver are both 15-16, but I have the Amethynes on a world tour, and Oliver doesn’t move to the valley until winter.

—This brings me to a side note: in the world of Choices, the bus is treated more like a charter than regular public transit. The valley contracts with Pam to drive the kids to school and back, and others can book her to take groups to special events. However, the summer before the fic begins, the bus breaks down, and no one has both the funds and the desire to fix it. Maru ends up doing her final year via virtual learning, as it allows her more time to do side projects/work at the clinic.

More under the cut:

—I put Trinnie and Keahi into that awkward preteen phase. Just enough older than Ellie/Jas/Vinny to be starting to deal with crushes.

—Eloise is actually closer to Trinnie and Keahi in age, but she prefers hanging out with Jas and Vincent.

—Yuuma is the youngest in Choices, but due to his need to take care of Shiro, often acts even older than Trinnie or Keahi.

—Lavril doesn’t appear in Choices, but I have her on the list anyways. Regardless of her actual age, the way she acts and is perceived is as a young girl, probably 6-7 years old.

—Why are there no babies? Mostly, it’s because Gen 3 is neglecting to procreate due to… *gestures towards the world at large* Were Tristan and Mona still around, we’d probably have at least one younger sibling for Jas. Also, due to the sorry state of Stardew Valley’s infrastructure and school system, I think families with young children who might have moved there to serve as a doctor, open a store/business, pursue graduate work, etc. instead look elsewhere. The only people willing to move into the valley and take on those jobs are ones who only really have themselves to worry about, hence why people like Harvey, Elliott, Leah, Philip, Aideen, or Flor move to the valley.

—Why haven’t I assigned ages to those kiddos or a rough dozen other characters from East Scarp or Castle Village? Mostly because I haven’t had a need to consider it just yet.

Now to go gorge myself on pizza and finally sleep for a bit.
