Lumbricus castaneus may be one of my favorite local earthworm species for its small size, active nature, and strong iridescence, which varies in color from deep blue to yellowish green.

found on the surface under leaf litter or old wood, when you uncover one of these spirited little worms it’ll sprint off to safety, shining all the way.

Critters NOT drawn to scale (though I wish tardigrades were mole-sized so I could hold them in my hands like a hamster)

Hey there! Hate to intrude, but there’s been something odd happening to the earthworms in my neighborhood. (Pictured below) For the past few days they’ve been turning up very sluggish on the sidewalk. They’re all covered in these white, red, or pink bumps. Not their clitellum (saddle), but just….bumps! I can’t find anything online and I’m so confused! Is this a disease? Birds pecking and dropping them on the sidewalk? You’re my last hope! If it helps, I live in North Carolina. Again sorry for the mystery and tysm in advance!!!!

I have no idea, I'm afraid! If you're on reddit, I'd try asking one of the bug or worm groups there. Reddit is absolutely action packed with experts on every subject.

South American Giant Earthworm (Onoreodrilus sp.), family Rhinodrilidae, Tulcan, Ecuador
Some members of this family can grow up to 3 ft long! There is not much data on this genus.
