Santorini rocked by more earthquakes, state of emergency declared
Several more earthquakes have hit the waters off the Greek island of Santorini just hours after authorities there declared a state of emergency, Greek media reported on Friday.
The emergency measures were declared by the island’s mayor’s office hours after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the island. It is the strongest tremor felt on Santorini since the first of about 7,700 tremors recorded last week.
Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said additional forces – firefighters, police, coast guard, as well as military and medics – had been sent to Santorini. Schools on the island were also closed and residents were advised to avoid harbours and large crowds indoors.
The measures, under which the army is expected to take a more active role in crisis management, will remain in place until March 3, when Orthodox Christians mark the start of Lent.
While experts say the geological phenomenon, which could last for weeks, exhausted locals continue to flee the island, likening the exodus to an “unofficial mass evacuation.”
Some 11,000 people are estimated to have left the island, which attracts more than 3.4 million tourists annually. Greek authorities have organised extra flights to evacuate people to the mainland, although strong winds on February 5 temporarily complicated the situation by suspending ferry services.
The last major earthquake on Santorini with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred in 1956, killing more than 50 people and causing significant damage. In this regard, the authorities and residents of the island remain vigilant and prepare for a possible worsening of the situation.

Devastating 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Leaves 100 Dead and Widespread Destruction
The powerful Earthquake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and shook Tibet on Tuesday, killing at least 100 people and leaving a long trail of destruction. More than 1,000 buildings were reported to be damaged or completely destroyed in Tingri County, where the earthquake was reported. Tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of northern India.
CCTV, the state broadcaster, showed scenes of devastation: houses flattened, streets littered with debris, and walls brought down as a result of the shaking. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded the earthquake at 6:35 am, followed shortly by two aftershocks at 7:02 am and 7:07 am, with magnitudes of 4.7 and 4.9, respectively. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake’s depth at 10 kilometers, while Chinese authorities reported the magnitude as 6.8. The epicenter was pinpointed about 75 kilometers northeast of Mount Everest in the high-altitude Dingri County, which houses a population of 62,000.
Injuries were confirmed by Chinese state media to be up to 62 in addition to general destruction all around Tingri County. “It is the strongest quake in the 200 km radius within the past five years,” said the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). Social media from neighbouring Lhatse County displayed photos of damaged shopfronts, roofs crushed, and vehicles under rubble with streets littered with debris.
This earthquake is the result of the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates that produces earthquakes and raises the Himalayas. Much like the earthquake on 25 April 2015, which rocked Nepal and had a magnitude of 7.8, this also produced grievous mortality, where casualty figures reach almost 9000 and maximum devastation is recorded across the region.
Bhutan, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand claimed to have felt the tremors. So far, no casualties or damages in India have been reported. Authorities in the affected areas continue to stay on alert as rescue operations go on in Tibet.

Taiwan hit by 6.4 magnitude quake, TSMC evacuates factories
An earthquake struck southern Taiwan’s Chiayi county on Tuesday, causing damage to homes and evacuations at factories of a well-known microchip maker.
The epicentre was 12 km north of Yujing at a preliminary depth of 10 km, the US Geological Survey said. Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration recorded a magnitude of 6.4.
No deaths were reported from the quake, although rescuers were still assessing the damage. The 27 victims have minor injuries, the Taiwan Fire Department said. A one-month-old baby is among the injured and was rescued from the rubble in the city of Tainan.
The world’s largest chip maker from Taiwan TSMC suspended work amid the earthquake, but now the enterprises are gradually resuming production.
On January 16, the probability of a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8-9 in the Nankai Trough, located southeast of the Japanese island of Honshu, rose to 80%. The probability of occurrence is calculated for the next 30 years. Victims of natural phenomenon may become up to 323 thousand local residents.
On September 2, 2024, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 was recorded off the coast of Taiwan. The tremors, the epicentre of which was located 8.5 km southeast of Hualien County, were registered at 4:26 p.m. The source was at a depth of 23.9 kilometres.
Last April, Taiwan was hit by a stronger earthquake of several tremors, the magnitude of one of them was estimated at more than 7. It was the largest earthquake in 25 years. At least 13 people died and more than 1,000 were injured.

"For years, California was slated to undertake the world’s largest dam removal project in order to free the Klamath River to flow as it had done for thousands of years.
Now, as the project nears completion, imagery is percolating out of Klamath showing the waterway’s dramatic transformation, and they are breathtaking to behold.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Klamath River flows freely, after Copco-2 dam was removed in California.
Incredibly, the project has been nearly completed on schedule and under budget, and recently concluded with the removal of two dams, Iron Gate and Copco 1. Small “cofferdams” which helped divert water for the main dams’ construction, still need to be removed.
The river, along which salmon and trout had migrated and bred for centuries, can flow freely between Lake Ewauna in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to the Pacific Ocean for the first time since the dams were constructed between 1903 and 1962.
“This is a monumental achievement—not just for the Klamath River but for our entire state, nation, and planet,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “By taking down these outdated dams, we are giving salmon and other species a chance to thrive once again, while also restoring an essential lifeline for tribal communities who have long depended on the health of the river.”
“We had a really incredible moment to share with tribes as we watched the final cofferdams be broken,” Ren Brownell, Klamath River Renewal Corp. public information officer, told SFGATE. “So we’ve officially returned the river to its historic channel at all the dam sites. But the work continues.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured: Iron Gate Dam, before and after.
“The dams that have divided the basin are now gone and the river is free,” Frankie Myers, vice chairman of the Yurok Tribe, said in a tribal news release from late August. “Our sacred duty to our children, our ancestors, and for ourselves, is to take care of the river, and today’s events represent a fulfillment of that obligation.”
The Yurok Tribe has lived along the Klamath River forever, and it was they who led the decades-long campaign to dismantle the dams.
At first the water was turbid, brown, murky, and filled with dead algae—discharges from riverside sediment deposits and reservoir drainage. However, Brownell said the water quality will improve over a short time span as the river normalizes.
“I think in September, we may have some Chinook salmon and steelhead moseying upstream and checking things out for the first time in over 60 years,” said Bob Pagliuco, a marine habitat resource specialist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in July.

“Based on what I’ve seen and what I know these fish can do, I think they will start occupying these habitats immediately. There won’t be any great numbers at first, but within several generations—10 to 15 years—new populations will be established.”
Ironically, a news release from the NOAA states that the simplification of the Klamath River by way of the dams actually made it harder for salmon and steelhead to survive and adapt to climate change.
“When you simplify the habitat as we did with the dams, salmon can’t express the full range of their life-history diversity,” said NOAA Research Fisheries Biologist Tommy Williams.
“The Klamath watershed is very prone to disturbance. The environment throughout the historical range of Pacific salmon and steelhead is very dynamic. We have fires, floods, earthquakes, you name it. These fish not only deal with it well, it’s required for their survival by allowing the expression of the full range of their diversity. It challenges them. Through this, they develop this capacity to deal with environmental changes.”
