EB x DC: Of Gadgets and Psychics
Disclaimer: I know next to nothing on Batman/Batfam stuff aside from what Nevermatch has infodumped/shown/read to me, and even then, she's only watched a few cartoons and read fanfics. The point is, the DC characters are liable to be OOC; you have been warned, I am doing my best. This fic is heavily inspired by various DP x DC fics Nevermatch has infodumped/shown/read to me, more specifically the Batpham ones. This may be obvious. I believe that is all, so I hope you enjoy this fic!
----------------------------------------------------
Chapter I: Bruce
It's a quiet evening in Gotham, although when compared to other cities, it's not quiet at all. It's also rather uneventful, almost enough to make Bruce feel antsy. Not that he wants Gotham to be overrun, but the silence and inactivity makes Bruce wonder what sort of things are being schemed behind the scenes.
He does his best to remind himself that Robin and Spoiler are on patrol, as are Orphan and Red Robin, so if something does happen, they'll know. Bruce tries to occupy himself with working on a case, even if it's a rather slow-going one. He moves to sip from his mug, only to find it empty, which is annoying.
Fortunately, Alfred enters the Batcave, carrying a tray holding a pot of coffee and a bubble envelope. Bruce takes the pot and refills his mug before raising his eyebrow at the envelope.
"It was delivered to you, Master Bruce." Alfred states simply, negating the need for Bruce to ask his question, "I believe you will find it important to note that its sender is someone you - presumably- do not know personally: one Ness Allen from Onett, Oregon."
"The other side of the country, huh?" Bruce hums as he picks up the envelope. He taps his comm. "Oracle, what do you know about Onett, Oregon?"
"It's a rural town; no paved roads leading to or from any other towns, but it's very close to Twoson, California." Barbara reports after some typing, "Aside from a police force seemingly obsessed with blocking roads, previously having a gang known as the Sharks, and having a meteorite land there about a year ago, it's not known for much."
"Interesting..." Bruce murmurs. He opens the envelope, finding the first thing inside to be a hand-written letter. It is clear that whoever wrote the letter tried to write neatly, despite a normally messy handwriting style. He reads through the letter, which says,
Dear Mr. Wayne, My name is Ness. I imagine you probably get letters like this a lot, but what I'm telling you here is true. I took a DNA test and found out that you are my biological father. In case you don't believe me, I've sent a few things with this letter; one is a copy of the test results, one is a sample of my hair, and one is a (cleaned-out) sauce container with my spit in it, though you might not want to use that one, in case it says I'm part ketchup if you do your own tests. Maybe we can keep in touch? You know, since you're apparently my bio dad and all. Assuming you want anything to do with me, that is. Hope to hear from you soon, Ness
Bruce raises his eyebrows at the letter. He then reaches into the envelope, pulling out a piece of paper with, sure enough, the test results, showing Bruce as the father. In a small baggie is a lock of black hair, and in another small baggie is an old ketchup container, presumably filled with saliva. He taps his comm again.
"Oracle, what do you know about Ness Allen?" he asks.
"Looks like he's an ordinary kid, B." Barbara replies, "Thirteen years old and in eighth grade, though he'll be fourteen in a month or so. Lives with adoptive parents Walter and Rachel Allen and adoptive sister Tracy Allen. Plays on the baseball team, and aside from a somewhat recent two-week absence, has a decent attendance record."
"Absence?" Bruce asks, "Does it say for what?"
There's some typing to be heard before Barbara responds. "Apparently, his mother had claimed that Ness had caught a really bad bug whenever his teachers came asking about him. Oddly, there are reports of him being in other places during this time. Twoson, California; Threed, California; Fourside, Nevada... Even places like Summers and Scaraba. This also says that his only "criminal record" is "deliberately trespassing", though the Onett Police Force pardoned it shortly afterward."
"Odd, indeed..." Bruce hums. He takes a sip of his coffee. "Keep me updated. Find out more on what happened during those two weeks."
He looks over at the hair and saliva and once again taps his comm. "Robin, Red Robin, I need you both back at the Cave. There's something important we need to discuss."
"Copy that, B." Tim replies, "We're on our way."
It's not long until Tim and Damian have arrived, both reporting nothing out of the ordinary aside from the occasional mugging here and there.
Bruce hands the samples to Tim. "I need you to run a DNA test on these. See if they match anything in our systems." He pauses. "Try the hair first."
"Then what did you need me here for, Father?" Damian asks, crossing his arms as Tim takes the samples to the Bat Computer.
"To talk with you and ask a few questions," Bruce says. He picks up the letter and glances at it before looking back at Damian. "Do you have any siblings that you know of? Blood-related, I mean." Damian nods, albeit somewhat reluctantly.
"I had a brother," he says. "He was the younger twin, and Grandfather deemed him the weaker of us, so he had him killed." He shifts a bit uncomfortably. "Grandfather frequently held that information over my head. I almost want to say he rather enjoyed it. Mother told me that she, regretfully, was the one tasked with killing him; she hadn't even gotten the chance to name him before then." He pauses, a questioning look on his face. "May I ask why, Father?"
Bruce hands Damian the letter. "According to Ness Allen here, I'm his father; said nothing about the mother, though. There's not even any mention of her on the DNA test results he sent as well. I wanted to ask, in case Ness turns out to be Talia's son, as well."
Damian reads through the letter and frowns. "Tt. If that is true, then it is not beneath Mother to have gone behind Grandfather's back and done something like this; claim she killed him successfully, when in reality she merely left him someplace else." He shakes his head. "Assuming, that is, he really is my brother. Assuming Mother withheld the fact that he lived in order to protect him, or even herself and me."
"Hey, Bruce?" Tim calls, bringing Bruce and Damian to look his way, "The results came back, and... Well, you and Damian are gonna wanna see this."
Bruce and Damian head over to the Bat Computer, where Tim is sitting. On the screens, the test results state that, sure enough, Bruce truly is Ness's father. Along with this, though, they also show who the mother is - Talia Al Ghul. And right next to Ness's name is Damian's.
"Looks like you're an older brother for once, Dami," Tim says with a bit of a wry smile.
"So he is alive..." Damian mutters, eyes somehow both wide in surprise and almost narrowed in understanding.
"Perhaps a response should be considered, Master Bruce." Alfred suggests, "He did suggest that the two of you keep in touch, after all."
Bruce nods thoughtfully. "Perhaps I will, Alfred."

She kills as she sees fit, for profit or because she was annoyed
COMICS- MARVEL
Superior Spider-Woman/Spider-Bitch/Olivia Octavious
Tumblr media
In an alternate universe, Olivia has done the same thing her male counterpart had done and stole the body of a Spider-Girl/Spider-Woman
Aiming to be the Superior Spider-Woman, greater than any other, meaning other Spider's simply refer to her as the Spider-Bitch
White Queen/Emma Frost
Tumblr media
Emma Frost is the White Queen. Originally a villain for the Hellfire club, eventually joining the X-Men. She is sexy, she knows it, she flaunts it. A confident smirk on at all times as her telepathy, telekenisis and the ability to turn her body to diamonds makes her a rather tough boss bitch
ANIME- DIGIMON
Lila
Tumblr media
LadyDevimon Level: Ultimate
Lila can be summed up with two words 'Dommy Mummy'. A sensual beauty who spent her life seeking the thrills and darkness of the world, from dark sensual kinks to the power of the shadow world. Eventually she gained the power of the Code Crown of Lust, the power of sin itself, and became Lilithmon. Queen of lust, queen of the dark world, she now lives seeking more thrill and pleasure with sensual excitment
She is sensual to the bone. Loving the embaressment others have, as well as the pleasure of the flesh. She can also be very cruel and sadistic when the mood suits her

Salem
Tumblr media
VIDEO GAMES- PERSONA
Margaret
Tumblr media
Akari Amamiya
Tumblr media
(face claim is the crossdressing design for Joker. The art works too well for a female Joker but I already have Rin...)
This OC is Akari Amamiya, Rin's own mother. A former prison warden, she and her husband went through a.... But of a rough patch because of the Shido incident. Her husband believing in their daughter being a deliquent and trouble maker. Let's just say... When Rin returned home, the house was one person short....
Akari works as a negotiator. Arriving for business deals, hostage negotiations, anything. Wearing a.... Modified version of her old outfit to add intimidation/to throw off the opposition, she has a near 100% rate of success in scoring her client the best result. The reason it's not 100% is because she will never screw over those being victimised. If she's hired to make a negotiation against a weaker party, she will do all in her power to make it better for them.
...
She also sells photos of herself on some 'adult' websites, but only pictures of herself wearing some form of cloths. Never naked
VIDEO GAMES- MEGAMAN
Dark Megaman.exe (will be reffered to as Rock)
Tumblr media
Dark Megaman is a clone made from all of Hub's self doubts and negative emotions given form. Still a femboy, but still rather dominant.
Empress Roll.exe/Devil Roll.exe
Tumblr media
Empress Roll is a corrupted version of Roll. When influinced by something like the Devil Chip, this form of Roll is born. Gone is the sweet innocent Navi, replaced by a Virus in Navi form. Sadistic, cold and cruel. You bow to her feet your face her whip~!
VIDEO GAMES- METROID
Dark Samus
Tumblr media
VIDEO GAMES- STREET FIGHTER
Juri Han
Tumblr media
Poison
Tumblr media
If you know Poison, you know about the gender situation with this character. And I do not feel confident writing a trans character, as I feel as though I will come across as offensive just from my ignorance about the subject. Also, there are plenty of arguments about Poison's gender because of how some people are idiots. So I am portraying Poison as a Futa, but if you wish to see or use her as a trans character I am more than fine with that just please communicate with me.
VIDEO GAMES- MASS EFFECT
Aria
Tumblr media
TOKUSATSU- ULTRAMAN
Grigio Darkness
Tumblr media
Carmeara

Note
Hi!! Congratulations on 100!!!! Would you do me a favor and link your comfort/favorite fics?
Oh I would love to! Most/all of these have been recommended before but they are my favs. This isn’t complete by a long shot but it’s a fairly decent list. These are not in order from best to worst, I have them alphabetically organized because I don’t think I could choose.
Avatar the Last Airbender
lessons in tea making by aloneintherain - the idea of Zuko having to run away from the Gaang is just...I wish I had found this fic sooner.
Salvage by MuffinLance - Zuko getting a father figure through Hakoda is not something I knew I needed until I read this fic. I would die if this fic became abandoned.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Every Letter That You Write Me by othellia - Hands down best Buffy fic I have ever read. I’ve only made it through this one twice but that’s because it’s not finished yet. If I could only recommend one Buffy fic it’d be this one.
Danny Phantom
Because of Him by dizappearingirl - I will die for another chapter. I have no idea why I love this one so much but I do.
Danny Phantom Reversal by The Smiling Crow - legit the best DP fanfic in which he turns into a half ghost after having fully died. No one could do a better story with this concept, I swear by it.
Disinterred by DarkNymfa - I was fairly late to reading this one but it is so good.
Fathoms Below by VanillaSpiders - I cannot tell you how much I enjoy this one. Maybe I’m just a sucker for mermaids but I have read this trilogy at least five times and would read it again in a heartbeat.
when the kingdom comes calling by blueh - this one makes me giggle.
DC
The One About Mr Tricycle and Mr-I-Take-a-Bike-to-Bed by FrankandJoe3 - I crack up every time. This fic never gets old. Whenever I need a laugh I come back to this one.
The Ward  by FrankandJoe3 - Y’all just need to read this one it’s so well written and has a unique storyline.
Through a Glass, Darkly by Never_Says_Die - Best Static Shock fic, period. I really like this story in ways I can’t explain.
Doctor Who
Connect-the-Dots by fingersfallingupwards - It’s a soulmate fic with Rose and the Doctor and I would die for another fic just like it.
Mad, Beautiful, Fantastic by JulietRose - I’m a sucker for Rose and the Doctor, and the title says it all.
Merlin
Y’know I’m not gonna even list all of these, just go check out CaffeinatedFlumadiddle
Everaftering So Happy by Palebluedot - this one makes me laugh.
Peace for Our Time by AngryPurpleFire - really funny Merlin fic, I’ve read it twice and would read it again.
Miraculous Ladybug
Go read SailorChibi because I can’t list all the ones I like from them.
Snuggle Bug by imthepunchlord - short, funny, and cute.
You Call This Acting? by chellethewriter - I have my reasons.
Crossovers
Broken Hearts (DP x TT) by DizzlyPuzzled - If you asked me in 2015, before I got into much fanfiction besides Danny Phantom, what my favorite fanfiction was, this would be it. I loved it in a way that, although it did put Danny through the ringer, it did allow him to heal and make steps toward his old self. Hurt/comfort for the win.
Devils Without And Devils Within (DP x DC x Marvel) by Ellyven- Literally would die for the last few chapters of this. It reels you in and keeps you wanting more and then...stops.
Earthbound Spirit (DP x TT) by TheTragicHero - I think this is one of the few, or only, that Starfire is Danny’s friend first. I have read this again and again and could read it a few times more. I read it after Broken Hearts and this holds a close second in nostalgic fics.
Mirrored (DP x American Dragon) by Lynse - Best, hands down, Danny Phantom and American Dragon crossover. Read it a long time ago and rediscovered it.
Mistaken Relations (DP x Rise of the Guardians) by DAsObiQuiet - if you’re looking for a laugh - this one is it.
Oh Captain, My Captain (Captain America x Torchwood) by Vinelady - I never thought a Marvel and Doctor Who (kinda) crossover could make me laugh and smile so much. I’ve read this maybe 3 times and it hasn’t gotten old yet.
Recognized (Danny Phantom x Young Justice) by AgentIanLegend- One of the more recent DC/Danny Phantom crossovers I cannot get enough of.

games i’m planning on playing soon/during summer
Pikmin (I started this like a few months ago and am halfway through but have been lagging on finishing it due to schoolwork and me just bein lazy and i wanna finish it b4 I start anything else cause i really love it and think it’s v fun
Wind Waker (I played this game like back in 2013 and loved loved loved it but haven’t played it since and one of my friends lemme borrow/have it and I badly wanna play it again but don’t wanna be playing thru two GC games at once lol)
Mother/Earthbound Zero (Ordered a repro cart of it that arrived in the mail like 2 days ago!!! V excited to play thru it since the music is v cool and I love the Mother series but have never played this one!)
Portopia Serial Murders (Got an english language rom of this and am excited to play a game of this genre and also play a game on my laptop + the graphics and presentation look v cute n cool)
Dragon Quest 1 & 2 (I have the gbc collection of 1 & 2 and played 1 around when quarantine started and wanna replay that since I played thru it really slowly and then after I beat it I wanna play 2 cause that one has multiple party members and prolly is a bit more complicated/more intense. Plus the graphics on the gbc ports are just adorbs /.\)
Mega Man X (Since this game isn’t that long it should just be like a day or two to beat it but still am listing it here cause I haven’t played it in 4eva and have been wanting to play it badly)
Sonic Adventure (have played the GC port of it like 4 years ago and have had the DC original for awhile but haven’t got around to playing it lol)
Dragon Quest 8 (I’ve had this on 3ds for atleast 2 years now and played a bit of it when I first got it and liked/loved it but stopped when college started. This is near the bottom of my ‘to-play’ list since I don’t know if I’ll have enough time and I’d like to play all the other games b4 I play this since I am much more passionate abt them but I still think this game looks awesome and wanna play it, am just worried since it’s prolly pretty long and would take a lot of time/dedication to get thru.)
Earthbound (I’ve obviously played this game before and played it when quarantine started and remembered how perfect it was and I might replay it when/if I beat Mother/Earthbound Zero since it would be nice to play them in order. Also wanna replay it with my current recreational corner setup and hear the really cool music and sounds from it with my stereo system!!!)

Fic:  Lost Time
3000 words | pg | msr | no content warnings unless you hate foot massages  |  minor spoilers for various episodes | set in unspecified season 7
This is an expanded version of the story I wrote for the second Fic is Medicine prompt at @xfficchallenges.  Thanks to @mashnotesofthemythopoeic for the encouragement.
There are times she wishes she could go back to Oregon, back to twenty-four-year-old Dana Scully with her hands braced on her hips like punctuation, her ponytail curling against the back of her neck in humid wisps.  Time is a universal invariant.  She would shake herself until her smug little teeth rattled like improbable dice.  Not in this zip code or any other, little agent.
Time passes differently in airports.  Most of all it reminds her of the giant plastic funnel in the mall with its bold sign proclaiming THE COIN VORTEX in unbalanced serifs.  She and Charlie would run to roll pennies down its calibrated ramps.  Seconds skirl past as she sits by the luggage retrieval, chasing each other around and around the flue of her mind with leisurely gravity before dropping inexorably into some undiscovered well in her soul.  It's like she can feel the chink of each one as it impacts, individual moments sliding across the accumulated heap.  Clink.  Clink.  Clink.  In the background, the poorly maintained conveyor belt heaves and creaks under the weight of other people's luggage.
She sits next to her tidy little bag and watches families haul past suitcases crammed with Disney merchandise and beach souvenirs.  The nametag from the conference at which she was speaking is still in her jacket pocket.  She pulls it out and gnaws at the tip of her finger with the alligator teeth of the clip.
Mulder is late.
She's not going to call him.  Clink.  Clink.  The seconds mound up inside her.  Clink.  Clink.  Clink.  When she shifts in the hard plastic chair, they scatter and rattle against her hipbones.  She feels heavier inside the longer she waits.  She had never plumbed the depths of herself before this job.  She has more strength and more capacity to tolerate the mysteries of the universe than she imagined, but her patience is not infinite.  Time still weighs on her.
After half an hour, her hand slips into her other jacket pocket for her phone.  All unbidden, it presses the single digit that she has programmed in as a shorthand for his number.  For him.  Mulder is 1.  Tall.  Stooped to reach her.  No sense of balance.  Not prime but primal.  Her phone burrs in her ear.  The call goes to voicemail.  She hangs up.  She has her dignity.
She sent him the information.  She left a printout on his desk, added the event to his calendar.  "Pick up Scully."  Mulder is always looking up.  It seems he ought to have seen her plane land.
After forty-five minutes, she calls him again.  Same number.  Same blurred tone.  Same dead end.  She hangs up again.
After an hour, she stands up slowly, shifting the aggregate heft of the time inside her, and walks to the Metro station.  She'll have to call a cab, but a body in motion is happier than a body at rest, at least when that body is hers: the uncomfortable truths one learns after years in the Rube Goldberg machine of the X-Files.  She feeds bills into the machine and lets the machine print a paper ticket for her.  She has a permanent plastic card, but it's too much to think of fumbling in her wallet.  She wedges her bag under her knees and stares out the window at nothing.
She should be angry.  Mulder, for the some round significant numberth time, has ditched her.  There is no carriage for the lady.  Another sign of his unearthliness, his untethering from the petty concerns of the earthbound.  He drove her to the airport, cracking sunflower seeds between his bicuspids and weaving a narrative out of fifty different mystic threads like a taller Rumplestiltskin.  He promised to pick her up.  Instead the train rocks and rattles underneath her as it carries her through the underworld, the pressed sediment layers of history bored open for the convenience of the throngs.  Everything in DC is just short of well-maintained, including the government.  Even the Library of Congress, even the files she's meticulously relabeled: the sheer volume of history around her obfuscates its truths.  She navigates the city not by the stars, but by the clean lovely classic lines of monuments to men who owned people.  She plunges through the earth on rails laid over bones.  They are all habituated to walking through ghosts.
She lets the motion of the car lull her and picks apart her own thoughts, slicing into her mind and propping its metaphorical ribs open.  The lack of ire at her perpetual abandonment is surprising, like a clean tox screen on a suspected addict, but she has to interpret the results she gets rather than those she expects.  What she is instead is wistful.  She wanted to see him.  She wanted him to come for her, to sweep her up in the swirl of his coat and stake her out her in view of the traveling public.  I am claimed.
The warped and flickering reflection in the plastic window shows her lips parted in surprise.  She doesn't often indulge in thinking this way, imagining the public affirmation of Mulder's usually clandestine attentiveness.  Now, tucked into the third or fourth hard plastic seat of the day, all she wants is to be in his car, tipping her head obliquely on the headrest to trace his profile with her eyes.
He's waiting at her apartment building when she climbs out of the cab she took from the closest Metro station.  He takes her suitcase from the cabbie, all solicitous grace.  Boyfriendly.  She suppresses the flutter of her heart.  Twenty cc's of common sense into the cardiac muscle.  Grey clouds jostle overhead, as frisky and balky as calves at a gate, peering at her.  She has emerged from the gentle oblivion of travel: overhead, underground, removed from the world.  She inhales the humid freshness of the breeze and lets it press the last traces of stale recirculated air from her lungs.
"How was the trip?" he asks.  The wheels on her bag press lines into the damp leaves on the sidewalk.  It's rained while she was in limbo, and the season has turned almost imperceptibly, shaking the boughs as it passes.  Stray drops patter down from the trees.
"It was fine," she tells him.
"I'm sure they valued your expertise," he says, looking up at the gravid clouds as she punches in the code for her front door, as if he doesn't know it.
"They asked a lot of questions," she tells him as they step inside the building.
"Well, you've trained for that," he says with a wink.
"I missed you," she says.
His grin is bright, conspiratorial, infectious.  "I missed you too.  Sorry I wasn't at the airport.  Skinner wanted something."
It is an apologetic non-apology.  Neither Schrodinger or Heisenberg could make much of it, unable to verify either the sincerity or the veracity of his excuse.  Still, she forgives him.  He is confessed.  He is absolved.  The rain will wash them both clean.  As she unlocks her front door, she can hear the dappling wet begin again.  The light in her apartment shifts as the clouds swell and drop.  Despite everything - the blood soaked into the pad beneath the carpet, the scratches in the paint on the vents from Tooms' incursion, the fragments of glass in the mulch underneath her window - the space is cozy, lightly scented with sage and lemon.  She has learned to claw back her things from the clutches of trauma: candles, her overstuffed couch, her bathtub, her partner.  Her life.  Her heart.
"Come in," she says, a foregone conclusion, but one that holds more promise now.  Time is not a universal invariant.  She can pull taut her tidy little stitches, all the moments she's saved over the years not being in love with him, and turn them into something lovely.  She can spend with profligate decadence from the hoard of moments that's dragged at her all day.  She turns as she pulls the key from her lock and he's watching her.  Out of season, something blooms inside her.
"All right," he murmurs, his voice scraping lightly against some prehistoric susceptibility still programmed into her medulla oblongata.  Respiration, circulation, her need for Mulder: all autonomic functions, beyond her conscious control.  She steps into the apartment and out of her shoes with a sigh, bracing one hand against the armoire.  Mulder presses in behind her, a one-man crowd still towing her suitcase.
She makes tea.  That's what she does when it rains.  Scale rattles in the bottom of the kettle as she fills it from the faucet.  She should clean it soon, replace the herbal scent of her candles with the bite of vinegar steaming through her kitchen, but she's weary, prizing comfort over scoured perfection.  She can hear Mulder hanging his jacket by the armoire and setting her bag by her bedroom door.  Funny how willing he is to cross all her metaphorical thresholds, but when it comes to the physical, he has cotillion manners.  He's been sprawled insensible in her bed, white gauze against his warm golden skin stopping up a wound she gave him and tended to, but still he nudges her suitcase until it rests delicately against her door and saunters back to her.
"Tea?" he asks.  She nods and reaches into the cupboard for a number of boxes.
"Peppermint," she says, tasting the crispness of the consonants on her tongue.  "Oolong.  Jasmine.  Earl Grey."   She brandishes each one at him and sets them on the counter.
"Peppermint," he says decisively.  "Although, technically, Scully, a blend that doesn't include the cured leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush is a tisane."
"We aren't all Oxford-educated psychologists," she says.
"Celestial Seasonings is a cult," he tells her, sprawling into one of her kitchen chairs.  Mulder can sit straight as a ramrod and still sprawl somehow, but this is louche, possessive, his arm slung over the back of her Windsor chair.  He sits in her chair like he might invite her to sit on his lap.  She wonders if it's intentional.  Mulder doesn't always understand his effect on people.  Mulder doesn't always understand his effect on her, specifically, despite the overclocked interrogative processes of his mind.
"Care to elaborate?"  She presses the knob in, turns it until it clicks and the flame ignites.  She half-listens as Mulder rambles on, dropping citations to esoteric publications, mentioning names she won't remember until some other fact tugs at the twanging filaments of her schema.  Working on the X-Files has given her a mind like a spiderweb: every idea filters through her, snagging against the relevant threads until she can apprehend it and sip it dry.  Meanwhile Mulder, neither noiseless nor patient, spins his yarns and weaves them around her until she's swaddled in his narratives, transfixed.
Scully leans against the counter.  She's sat too long today.  The longer she stands, the more she feels the leaden weight of waiting soften, melting down her legs and slowing her feet.  It feels as if she is reclaiming those moments; every task takes three times as long to do, borrowed back from her store of lonely minutes.  Rain lashes the window and drums on the roof.  The gravelly racket from the kettle is a fitting soundtrack to Mulder's tales of conspiracy and herbs.  He looks at her, expectant.
"It makes sense," she says.  "No well-balanced person could concoct Raspberry Zinger."
"A delicious conspiracy," he intones solemnly, gazing at her with those bosky eyes.
The kettle whines.  It gives her an excuse to look away from him.  Surely immediate domestic concerns like water boiling override the temptation to let herself be captured in the fairy rings of his irises.  The kettle insists, the sound rising to a squeal as she snaps off the flame and pours the water into two cups.  The tea bags bob just beneath the surface, leaking ochre.  She nudges one toward Mulder, who rises from the chair and leans over her, a breath too close for professionalism, to retrieve it.  She cants her body to escape his orbit and retires to the couch.  Mulder joins her, lounging at the other end, the weight of him as palpable as the ballast of time she's slowly shedding.
Scully laces her cool fingers around the hot mug.  Ever since Antarctica, she's relished the heat despite the way it stings.  Her baths are too hot, leaving her rosy with her hair in ringlets.  Her coffee scalds her tongue.  Mulder winces and sets his mug on her coffee table, then casually pulls her feet into his lap and kneads his knuckles along her arches as if it's something he does every day.  His fingers are warmer than usual as he presses into the complicated countertension of tendons and fascia, residual heat from the tea.
"Mulder," she starts to say, but all that comes out is the em in a soft sound of pleasure.
"I know this doesn't make up for ditching you, Scully," he says, "but I promise this time it wasn't my fault.  Skinner trapped me in his office with some rookie who needed help with a profile.  I told him that I had to go, but he reminded me that my continued employment with the federal government depends to some extent on fulfilling his whims."
"Did you tell him you were leaving to pick me up?" she asks.
"For some reason, that didn't compel him," Mulder says, digging into a tender spot until she gasps a little.  "I did catch him picking up his car keys.  Maybe he wanted to be the one rubbing your feet."
"I thought the massage was an act of contrition," she says.
"If that were the traditional apology for ditching someone, I would have been kneeling at your feet years ago," he tells her.  "Maybe I should have been."
"Then why are you rubbing my feet?" she asks.
He shrugs and imprints circles around the bone of her ankle with the soft pad of his thumb.  "Indulging myself."
The afternoon drags past like wet silk, brushing over her skin instead of piling up inside her in a hoard of compounded disinterest.  Scully sips at her tea, or her tisane, or whatever the hell it is, relishing the contradictory fresh heat of it as Mulder smoothes the fatigue out of her feet.  The mesh of her pantyhose makes webs between her toes.  She is become a suburban cryptid, a soccer mom type with a secret.  Mulder purses his lips and blows into the interstices to make her shiver.
"Indulgence isn't your usual modus operandi," she says at last, drowsy and refreshed.
"Mm?"  He looks up at her.  "What are my regular symptoms, Doctor Scully?"
"Flagellation," she says idly.  "A guilt complex that verges on narcissistic.  Melancholy."
"Maybe I need my humors balanced," he quips.
"I can dig up some leeches if you're feeling bilious," she says.
"All the more reason to do my penance," he says.  "Prostrating myself before you.  A thousand Hail Scullys and a few hours of foot rubs are a small price to pay for my mortal soul."  He ducks his head in contrition.  Dark stubble ruffles down his neck.  She wants to chafe her fingertips against it, or the soft skin of her cheek.  He's due for an appointment with the clippers.
"It's going to take more than a few hours of foot rubs to avoid the leeches," she corrects him.
"Exact your toll," he says.  "Five minutes for every minute you've spent waiting for me sound fair?"
She snorts.  "You're negotiating yourself into a lifetime of indentured servitude at that rate."
"There are worse fates," he says lightly.
"There are better proposals," she parries.
"Are you asking me to marry you, Scully?"  His voice is low, the cadence of his words deliberately provocative.
"Of course not," she counters.  "I can't depend on you to pick me up from the airport, much less meet me at the altar and be with me for better or for worse."
"At least we've already gone through sickness and health," he says, releasing her feet for long enough to rap on the veneer of her table and then resettling himself.  "But you have a point."  He strokes the tops of her ankles down to her toes, his long fingers grazing delicately along the slope of her foot.  "We'll have to settle for a lifelong bond less sanctioned by the priests of the world."
Outside it's still raining.  They are cordoned off from the rest of the world by grey and damp in a moment that will be dissolved, resolved, absolved.  Après ça, le déluge, and their confessions will evaporate like holy water, returning to some abstract plane.  Scully sets down her mug.
"Is that all?" she asks casually.
"An eternity of contrition," he says.  "And my best attempts at punctuality.  Although between you and me, I think Skinner did it on purpose."
"Are you saying he's trying to come between us?"  She hums as he resumes his ministrations.
"He's been trying to come between us for years," Mulder claims.
"The true conspiracy," she says.  "The question is, which one of us is he after?"
"A conundrum for the ages," Mulder murmurs.
Scully rests her head against the couch cushions, her eyes drifting over Mulder's face as he devotes himself to kneading her calves.  His downcast lashes smudge his cheekbones.  He is cast half in shadow by the rainlight, a moody portrait of devotion.  She lets herself be weary, lets herself be cherished, lets time slip past without marking it.  Some moments are eternity.  She will find all the minutes she has lost, someday, in this infinitely variable universe.

The Problem with the Avengers
Tumblr media
I’ve been reading a lot of Avengers comics recently scattered throughout their history and whilst they often have enough superhero action to kill some time, rarely have I ever found myself that engaged by the stories. In truth I’ve felt that way about virtually every Avengers story I’ve ever read.
In contrast whenever my reading lists took me to a random X-Men or Fantastic Four comic book I found they made for simply better reading.
This got me thinking about how traditionally and even now with the enhanced status the Avengers have in the comic series still seems to generate less enthusiasm than a lot of it’s competition with the really major superhero teams out there.
I think the fundamental problem is that, unlike those other teams, the Avengers is sorely lacking in identity.
I define the major Marvel/DC superhero teams as the ones that have been around near consistently for at least 30ish years and have have bled into multiple forms of other mass media.
So we’re talking the Fantastic 4, the Justice League (regardless of whether it’s called the Super Friends, the JLA, etc), the X-Men (and it’s associated spin-offs, e.g. X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants) and the Titans/Teen Titans and the Avengers.
Unlike the Avengers, each of those teams has one or more simple ideas and hooks that have, more often than not, defined them and given them a basic but concrete premise to fall back on that the audience can easily connect to.
The Justice League are the All-stars of the DC universe, the team with the truly iconic characters in it’s line up and/or the guys who are at least mainstays of the DC universe in some fashion and well known to comic book readers. They are also at times allegorical to Greco-Roman Gods, e.g. Superman = Zeus, Batman = Hades, Green Lantern = Apollo, etc.
The X-Men are allegories for persecuted minorities and those who face bigotry in some fashion, as well as at times being allegories for adolescence.
The Fantastic Four are a nuclear family of scientists and explorers.
The Teen Titans are the junior heroes, the next generation, a junior Justice League if you will and more often than not the sidekicks to the older iconic heroes.
The Titans are the above but all grown up, independent, a non-nuclear family and in essence the next generation on the cusp of becoming the what their mentors were.
Now the Avengers at face value also have an easily understood hook too. They’re Earth’s Mightiest Heroes right? They, like the Justice League, are the All-stars of the Marvel universe right? Sometimes they’re talked of as being loosely equivalents to the Knights of the Roundtable.
The problem is that in practice...this is mostly lip-service.
For sure IN-UNIVERSE most people look up to the Avengers or hold them in similar esteem that the DC citizens hold the Justice League.
But as far as the real life audience is concerned for most of the Avengers history they really weren’t the All-stars of the Marvel universe and that comparison to Arthurian legend is really more talked about outside the comics more than it ever was genuine text or subtext in the pages themselves.
Lets put the Avengers into historical context. When the team debuted in 1963, consisting of Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp, all of those characters were less than 2 years old.
And its a matter of historical record that they were neither the highest selling nor the most popular superhero books Marvel was putting out, Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four were.
Furthermore the Hulk’s solo title had earlier that year been cancelled and whilst the other Avengers were continuing to regularly appear every month it was in anthology titles where they were simply the main, but not solo, stars. Those titles weren’t even NAMED after those heroes. You had Tales of Suspense for Iron Man, Journey into Mystery for Thor and Tales to Astonish for Ant-Man and Wasp.
Were these guys REALLY Marvel’s mightiest heroes?*
No they really weren’t.
To be frank it seems more like Stan Lee et al were trying to make bank off of the innate appeal of crossing characters over and doing so by grouping together the less successful and less popular characters.
You could make a similar argument for the Justice League of course, except when they debuted most of their members had been around considerably longer and they had Wonder Woman as a mainstay with Superman and Batman at times dropping in too, their presence only increasing across the decades. Nowdays many fans feel its just not the Justice League without the Trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.
Back to the Avengers, these characters were the revered all-stars of Marvel in name only, with the Hulk even leaving shortly afterwards, replaced by the probably more famous Captain America...who also didn’t have his own book at the time. Cap actually didn’t regularly appear in any title until around a year after his Avengers debut when he began starring alongside Iron Man.
Cap might’ve been a long established hero but even he wasn’t high profile enough to get his OWN solo-series. In fact when he finally did what really happened was he became the solo star of Tales of Suspense (renamed to Captain America) and IRON MAN got his first true solo-series**
To make the matter clearer when the Avengers went through their first major shakeup (less than TWO YEARS after the series began) the cast consisted of Cap (who was still sharing with Iron Man at this point), Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
The Avengers had now been reduced to one character who shared a title with another one and three former villains who’d NEVER had solo-stories before, who weren’t even appearing regularly anywhere outside of the Avengers title.
Creatively this wasn’t all that bad. After all one of the pitfalls of team books like Avengers or Justice League is that often the series is constrained by events happening in the characters’ solo books or the other way around. Like the, F4 Cap’s kooky quartet could grow and develop in the Avengers and the only place you could see that potential growth was IN the Avengers comic itself; Johnny and Ben’s bland and bad solo yarns in Strange Tales notwithstanding.
However Cap kooky quartet was yet more evidence of how the ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ was a cool slogan for the team and nothing more. They were a million miles away from being the Marvel All-stars they were treated or promoted as.
They were just ANOTHER Marvel team, more or less a home for miscellaneous Marvel heroes who were:
a)      Relatively Earthbound
b)      Not overly weird like Dr Strange
c)       Flashier than dude’s without costumes like Nick Fury
d)      Not already on teams
e)      Not independently popular/interesting like Spider-Man
After all there is a reason so much of Iron Man and Cap’s histories are wrapped up with the Avengers titles and why most adaptations of the characters work in wider Marvel Universe elements. Its because those characters supporting casts and rogue galleries were not strong enough on their own to support their solo titles most of the time, so they essentially became Avengers satellite books.
This miscellaneous aspect to the Avengers though gave rise to another interpretation of the team, that in fact part and parcel of the point of them was that ANY Marvel hero could join their ranks. In essence that the Avengers could be a grand crossroads of the Marvel universe where any and all characters could pop up.
Its a nice sentiment but holds little water when you consider how the Avengers in-universe were typically treated as the premiere superhero team and how in practice many characters remained consistently out of their ranks. Even if we do swallow this line of thinking that simply means that the Avengers in being a team where anyone can join simply has no identity at all.
The X-Men during Claremont’s iconic run had a similar sort of idea of constantly changing up the roster except that book had the fundamental mutant metaphor to hold the shifting characters together no matter what.
When your team identity is that the identity can be anything your team hasn’t GOT an identity.
And this problem with the Avengers (a lack of identity wrapped around a false claim of being the Marvel All-star line up) went on and on and on for DECADES!
It got to the point where the X-Men, who in the Silver age FAILED compared to the Avengers, made good on their second chance and gradually grew in popularity until they clearly eclipsed every other Marvel team and by the 1990s eclipsed every other superhero team and book on the stands, exempting at times Spider-Man or Batman. In that decade anything with an X would sell whilst anything with an Avengers A was B-grade at best.
Whilst the Avengers claimed to be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Marvels A-list heroes, Spider-Man and the X-Men actually WERE.
In 2004 when Bendis created the New Avengers with the explicit intention of re-orientating the team to finally truly be the Marvel A-list squad it had always claimed to be it had 2 big problems.
The first was that after 40 years and 500 issues the perception of the Avengers within the comic book community had become pretty entrenched. The second was that Bendis only slightly made good on this promise of reinvention.
By which I mean he added Spider-Man and Wolverine (basically the Superman and Batman of Marvel as far as their popularity went) to the Avengers as mainstays and then kept Iron Man, Cap and added in B-listers Luke Cage and Jessica Drew and not even a B-lister the Sentry.
To be clear I am not trying to insult Luke or Jessica but most people in 2004 didn’t know who they were and most who did didn’t care about him. they were added to raise their profile which is the exact opposite of what the book was claiming to do.
Even now with both characters holding more prestige than they did back then, if you were making a truly All-star Marvel superhero team Luke Cage and Jessica Drew probably wouldn’t be on the squad considering neither has a movie.
Whilst it’s true Bendis made New Avengers an unqualified success if you or I wrote a comic book with the two biggest Marvel characters in it hot on the heels of beloved and acclaimed movie appearances for both (which were sequels no less) of course it will sell like hot cakes.
But that sales success has absolutely not lasted.
Because again, the Avengers have no true identity as a superhero team, not even with the raised profile of the more traditional Avengers members afforded by their film appearances. At this point the failure of Iron Man’s popularity in wider pop culture to translate into much of an increase in comic sales is a bad joke. The fact is the comic book reading community still regards Iron Man as of lesser status than someone like Batman or Spider-Man or Wolverine and similarly the Avengers status as a team is still being hurt by the decades during which they were all sizzle and little steak.
Ironically this effect has been mitigated in adaptations. In cartoons (like Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes) a fresh modern take on the Marvel universe was presented wherein the Avengers characters were among the first  and seemingly only heroes to inhabit that world (as far as the audience initially believed) essentially rendering them Earth’s Mightiest Heroes by default and free of the F4 or Spider-Man as a measuring stick could truly come off as All-stars. It also helped that the team membership was more consistent and a greater focus was placed upon their interpersonal relationships with one another, rendering them either a family or a kind of private little community of superheroes. Plus the show was as much an adaptation of the wider Marvel universe as it was Avengers stories, meaning often they could give focus episodes over to individual members to flesh them out.
To n extent the same thing happened in the MCU although because the MUC established solo movies for most of the Avengers first it in essence raised the prestige of each character thus justifying their claim to the film Avengers being all-star players. Plus there was a certain glamour and energy afforded the first film from being a never before done experiment in crossing over so many properties, this then fuelling consequent movies like Infinity War.
What’s ironic about all this is that the false interpretation of the Avengers being the Knights of the Roundtable is actually a way more fertile concept to build the Avengers team identity around and a more compelling hook to sell to the wider audience.
You could retain the idea that, in-universe, they are the Marvel All-star line up, but in the true substance of the series loosely build the stories and characters more around moderinzed takes upon Arthurian legend and ideals of heroism. Much as the Justice League have at times served as loose allegories for the Greco-Roman Pantheon.
If you look at the original team of Avengers, plus Captain America and Hawkeye, they already fit into loose concepts of Medieval era knights anyway.
Cap is a soldier, in other words a modern day knight, who is the absolute ideal warrior (Lancelot) complete with a form of chainmail armour and a weapon distinctly from Ye Olden Days.
Iron Man has frequently been referred to as a modern day knight in shining armour because he literally wears armour.
Thor is a Viking whom, I’m not sure were exactly around during when Arthurian legend is supposed to happen but like...close enough.
Hulk is perhaps equivalent to a troll, a creature from Medieval fairy tales.
Hawkeye is of course an archer and a clear Robin Hood allegory (Robin Hood is also Medieval).
And you could say Ant-Man and Wasp are akin to pixies. And even if you think not Hank when Giant Man is obviously a fairy tale giant.
I’m not saying every character needs to be as exact as those, but it’s just something for the team to concretely hang their hat on rather than continuing to insist they are the best Marvel characters all in one team when they usually don’t even have Marvel’s most popular character with them!

Original Carmine Infantino / Joe Giella art. This is a rather important piece of art in the history of Batman / comics. I’ll let the original auction listing (from Heritage Auctions) tell the story. (this piece sold back in 2008 for $17,925.00)
Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella Detective Comics #327 First "New Look" Batman Splash Page 1 Original Art (DC, 1964). Carmine Infantino's splash page for "The Mystery of the Menacing Mask" is a landmark piece of Silver Age DC art. Despite Batman's immense popularity in the forties and fifties, the character's direction had gone terribly astray by the early sixties. Batman had been fighting alien criminals, traveling to other planets, teaming with interstellar cops, and was fighting earthbound monsters such as Clayface. As a result of these offbeat yarns, sales had been dropping for years, and Detective Comics, DC's flagship title, was actually in danger of being canceled. In desperation the title was turned over to famed DC editor Julius Schwartz, the man with the Silver Age touch. He brought in his top-flight art team of Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella to launch the revamped version of the Gotham Guardian which Schwartz dubbed the "New Look." Infantino's streamlined version, including a redesigned, circular bat chest emblem was so distinctive, so revolutionary, that for the first time in the life of the feature, it was agreed that Bob Kane would not be credited with drawing this story, and as a result, there would be no Bob Kane signature on the splash page. The success of the "New Look" was instrumental with setting into a motion a chain of events that has continued to the current triumph of superheroes in the mass media and popular culture. ABC executive William Dozier was smitten by the "New Look" Batman comics, and they convinced him to launch the phenomenally successful Batman TV series starring Adam West. Ever since the success of that show, comic book characters have remained a staple for film and TV projects. The "New Look" Batman, which began with Detective Comics #327, and this splash page, did more than just save the Batman character from cancellation -- it may have saved an industry from extinction. This historic piece has an image area of 13" x 18". The title logo is a carefully color-matched replacement; otherwise, the art is in Excellent condition.
