Demonstrating the jar test at one of our workshops. The jar test is easy. Fill a jar half way with water and put in a handful of dirt. Shake well for a few seconds and then watch. Within seconds, the sand will settle. Make a mark with a sharpie - this is your percentage of sand. Within minutes, the silt will settle, make another mark. Find a spot out of the way to put it and within anywhere from a day to 3 weeks, the clay will settle and you'll have clear water at the top. 1 part clay and between 4-6 parts sand is a perfect ratio. Silt isn't a deal breaker for #earthbags though the walls wouldn't be as strong if it's all you've got. The Roof!

Here are shots during the building process of the earth roof. You’ll see the layers from the rafters to rocks. All built to handle the weight of soil + plants + water + snow. The 2 openings on top are a small dome skylight and the stovepipe.

In the spring, Zak will put 2 - 3″ of compost/soil and sedum seeds to complete the green roof / living roof.
