Director, John Plews, talks us through what goes into putting on a top-quality musical. 1. Anything Goes, is so well known, how do you keep it fresh? First and foremost, the cast and creatives; although I’ve worked with the choreographer and design team before we’ve not collaborated on a Cole Porter musical in the past and we are all bringing our own ideas to the production. The cast have been chosen specifically for Anything Goes; they all have great triple-threat musical theatre skills. 2. What’s going to be different about your version? There are several difference versions of the script and I’ve chosen the one used for the 1962 Off-Broadway revival. There will be a few surprises for those who are used to the more modern version. 3. As a director, what are the most important things to get right with your performers? Right from the start I like my performers to take on my life-long belief that musical theatre should first and foremost entertain. I totally understand there should be room for the type of musical that educates, informs, and make an audience question the subject matter. However, Cole Porter and his contemporaries in the nineteen thirties, forties and fifties wrote tunes you could sing on your way home from the show. We are essentially recreating a classic piece of musical theatre. 4. How do you engage your audience? (Will there be any audience participation?) Although we are putting Anything Goes on at Christmas, it certainly isn’t a Pantomime. There will not be any direct audience participation, although we do want our audience to feel they are actually travelling the Atlantic on our good ship America. 5. Who’s the boss, you, or musical director Dan Glover? There’s a three in charge of any musical – the director, the musical director, and the choreographer – we are all at the helm together. 6. Upstairs at the Gatehouse has a large broad playing area, how are you going to turn this into an ocean liner? That’s the challenge I have given my design team. Although I have given them some advice, mostly based on the ten years I worked at sea and the many times I crossed the pond on the QE2 and more recently on the Queen Mary 2. 7. What do you think might have been different about this musical if the book had been written in the 21st century? Will your productions feel like an historical masterpiece or a musical for today? Our musical will hopefully entertain the audience now at I’m sure it did in 1934. In the 21st Century we have a little more help from the sound and lighting departments but hopefully Cole Porter would have been delighted with our production. 8.
