An early endorsement, just for the men.
Guys, if you are some years removed from your college dorm, it’s time to develop your taste for interiors.
"I let my wife/girlfriend handle that department", you might say.
To which I reply, why?
Whether you're married or as the hipsters practice, “living together”, why have you delegated your environment ? Wait. You haven't retreated to a Man Cave in your dank basement have you?
Dude. You have an opinion on everything. Trust me, I have heard you talking trash about our teams and lustfully about that skinny pouty model when we're out. Emily?
So, learn a little about interior design. Go online. Go to your library and read a copy of The World of Interiors magazine. And if you’re still reading this post, spend some time reading the posts and links from our knowledgeable friend @antique-gloom
His recent link to artists and their mantelpiece has entertained me for the last 15 minutes. I bet you find something at his Tumblr that will inspire you. I do every day.
Now, @antique-gloom has a point of view; his enthusiasms may not be yours. Maybe you are an Eames Chair, Mid Century Modern (MCM), MadMen type. Great. Find your style is my point.
Fellas? You know what they call guys with an interest in style?
Yeah. Men.
Me? My place is a cheery mess of late 19th century furniture, most of which I had reupholstered; Hollywood Regency lamps draped with scarves, and piles of books and guitars that accumulate at a pace my PA valiantly battles. It resembles a down at the heels second tier Men’s Club circa 1930 crossed with a Bedouin encampment. I display 18th century botanical prints, avant-garde advertising posters, Vanity Fair caricatures, and photos I shot on the walls. In the corner, by my keys, is a book of numbers and my remedies.
Everything I have was either free or cheap.
Give it a try.

If you asked him, Fred would say his happiest day was the day he married you. Watching you walk up the aisle in your white dress, pretty smile on your face, was a sight engrained into Fred’s memory forever.
He was irrevocably in love with you, this he knew, and that day just made him fall for you even more - his heart had beat so fast when he saw you walking towards him, looking like an angel.
He didn’t think his life could get any better.
That was until the day he held his little baby girl in his arms for the first time. He felt an overwhelming feeling of adoration for the tiny infant whose whole hand could only just clasp around his finger. This little baby who depended on him so fully, his little bundle of joy wrapped in a pastel purple blanket, knitted by Molly.
He was wrapped around her finger from day one. She was a complete daddy’s girl, only settling to sleep when in her father’s arms, immediately stopping crying when being held by him. Often, he’d fall asleep with his baby girl laying on his chest, his hand holding her in place as she snuggled into his sweater.
He’d take her to his shop, holding her as he spoke to customers, whilst he served them at the tills, enjoying when they asked him questions about her - about his beautiful little baby who could barely open her eyes yet, but who owned his heart completely.
By the time she was a few months old, Fred insisted they were best friends, spending as much time as he could with her, looking after her whilst you went back to work. He was almost besotted - she was his soft spot, possibly the only person besides you who could get him to do whatever they wanted.
“Say dada! Come on, Evie! Say dada! Dada!” Fred stood in front of his little girl, who was sat in her high chair, giggling at the funny faces he was pulling at her.
She’d been making sounds for the last couple of weeks and you were both sure she was going to start speaking soon - something you were both excited about. Fred was determined that her first word would be dada, her being so fond of him and all, and couldn’t wait until she finally said it.
“Ba!” The baby announced excitedly, kicking her little legs in the chair. Fred grinned at her, “Yes darling, ba! But please say dada! Dada!”
At the silence, he sighed, “Fine, what about mama? Can you say mama?”
“Mmm?” The baby pursed her lips and blew a spit bubble at him.
“Are you trying to get her to speak again?”
Fred looked up at George, who entered the kitchen, and sighed again, “She’s gonna do it! I swear! She’ll say dada!”
George stepped into the baby’s eyeline and she began squirming in her seat, letting out a loud, happy squeal and banging on the tray in front of her.
She tried to point at the younger twin, who grinned at his niece and poked her cheek, making her giggle, “Hello darling! Someone’s happy to see me, aren’t they?”
She opened her mouth and Fred held his breath, hoping she would speak, before shaking his head fondly as she simply hiccuped, uninterested in saying anything at all.
“These things take time, she’ll say it eventually, you can’t rush it,” George reminded his twin, who leant against the fridge, not taking his eyes off the baby.
“I know,” he glanced up at George, “I just... I can’t for her to say-“
“Dada!”
Fred’s eyes widened, George nearly dropping the glass he’d gotten down from the cupboard.
“Did she just-“
“She did! My baby girl said- Oh Evie, my amazing, beautiful, smart little girl!” Fred lifted her from the chair and cradled her into his arms, “Did you say ‘Dada’?”
“Dada!” She cheered again.
“Y/n is gonna kill you for getting her to speak whilst she’s not here,” George said, amused.
But the words didn’t register to Fred, who was too busy lifting the baby up into the air and back down again as she squealed.
As she started getting closer to being able to walk, Fred made it his mission to baby-proof your home, ensuring she couldn’t hurt herself on anything. She was currently shuffling everywhere on her bottom, with the occasional attempt at holding the couch to help her stand up.
Every time she did this, you both encouraged her to try and move towards you, most of the time receiving blank stares or the occasional laugh.
This time, however, your little girl seemed more determined to move around by herself.
“Come on, come to dada!” Fred called to her with a reassuring smile. He glanced over at you, winking before his attention settled back on his daughter.
“Dada!” The infant babbled, grinning at Fred, who was crouching with his arms out around a metre distance away. Her wide eyes beamed at him as she let go of the couch and made a couple of wobbly steps towards Fred, her own little arms reaching out for him, before losing her balance and falling onto her bottom just in front of her dad.
“Evie, princess! Did my clever little girl just walk?” He cooed, clapping his hands together as the baby smiled at him. He scooped his daughter up and she clapped her little fists together copying his previous actions, before letting out a giggle - Fred swore he’d never heard something so adorable.
“You’re so smart, aren’t you baby girl?” You smiled, taking the baby as she held her arms out to you.
“Mama!”
Once she mastered walking, you found that you couldn’t get her to sit still for anything. A ball of energy just like her father, she happily ran around the place all day, especially enjoying when Fred would take her into work with him.
“We need to leave, come on Evie!” Fred held out her coat, watching as she crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head, “No! Don’ wanna!”
Fred sat beside her, “We’re going to daddy’s work though! Don’t you want to come?”
Her resolve relaxed a little as she raised her eyebrows, staring up at him, “Daddy wor’?”
“Yes princess, daddy’s work. And if you’re good, we could get you some ice cream before we go?”
She immediately stopped pouting, peering up at him through her dark lashes in excitement, and bouncing around in her seat, “Ice ‘eam?”
“Yes, ice cream!” Fred agreed, “Should we go?”
She nodded immediately and stood up, allowing him to put her shoes and coat on whilst she happily babbled out a story to him.
She grabbed his hand as they walked to Diagon Alley, stopping off for ice cream as promised, before she noticed the familiar orange building in the distance and suddenly let go of his hand, darting off through a couple of crowds of people.
“Wait, Evie, come back!” Fred called out, dodging people, running after his toddler, who was surprisingly fast when she wanted to be.
She ran through the doors of the joke shop and found George quickly, the latter busy restocking some shelves near the entrance, a box in his hands. At the sound of the door opening, he looked over and smiled softly at the little girl who had entered.
“Unca Geowge, I got ice ‘eam!” She announced happily to him, holding out the ice cream cone to him and ignoring the fact that ice cream was now running down her fist.
“Oh Merlin, you’ve got ice cream?” He faked his shock before noticing it was everywhere but in the actual cone, “Well you’ve definitely got it all over you haven’t you, darling?” He left the stock where it was, placing the box he was holding on the floor, grabbing the handkerchief out of his jacket pocket and crouching down to wipe her hands and cheeks.
“There we go, much better,” George nodded at her and she offered him a toothy grin.
“Tank you, Unca Geowge.”
He laughed as he watched an out-of-breath Fred nearly fall through the shop door, “No problem, sweetheart.”
“What did I say about running off, Evie?” Fred scolded her, though thankful that she had found the way to George without getting lost - he didn’t want to have to explain that he lost your daughter to you.
The little girl turned to her dad and dropped her head, pouting, “No’ to dwo it.”
Fred lifted her up and went to tell her off again, but stopped as he looked in her eyes, his face softening, “It’s okay baby, just don’t do it again, alright?”
She nodded, “I won’t.” Then, she turned away in his arms and dropped her ice cream cone onto the floor, before looking back up at her dad innocently, “I done wiv ice ‘eam now.”
“Evie,” he sighed, before placing her down on the floor and letting her run off towards George, who hid a laugh as Fred cleaned up the floor.
“You know what Mum would say,” George grinned, watching his brother pick up the cone and drop it into the bin beside the till counter.
Fred opened his mouth to answer, when suddenly there was a loud crash and the twins turned to where the noise came from, a stand of vials having fallen over.
Evie’s mouth was open as she pointed to the vials rolling across the floor, “Oopsie!”
“Karma,” Fred groaned, before moving off to clean up again after his daughter.
Wrapped around her finger, you always said. He’d do anything and everything his little girl asked of him, never being able to tell her ‘no’ without going back on his word once he saw her trembling bottom lip or puppy eyes.
You kicked off your heels as you entered your home, glad to finally be back after a long day.
“Hello?” You called out, rifling through the post that had been left on the table. You frowned when you didn’t receive a response, but the sound of giggling came from upstairs and you dropped the letters back where they were, going off to find your husband and daughter.
“What’s going on here?” You asked as you pushed the door to Evie’s room open, placing your bag down in the hallway and entering in. Fred looked up, and you stifled a laugh, noticing that your little girl had roped him into letting her do his makeup - if the lipstick on the cheeks and bright blue eyeshadow were anything to go by - a pink feather boa hanging round his neck, along with some costume jewellery clip-on earrings, a tiara and, your favourite, a way-too-small hot pink tutu around his waist as he sat at the little table in her room.
“Can’t you see, mummy?” Your daughter blinked up at you pointedly, “We’re having a tea party! I made daddy into a princess like in the stories you read to me!”
“He makes a very pretty princess, doesn’t he sweetie?” You grinned at Fred - who winked dramatically at you - before pressing a kiss to your daughter’s head as she nodded in agreement with you.
“Tea, daddy?” She asked, lifting her teapot and pouring her ‘tea’ into his cup without waiting for his answer. He raised the cup to his lips and stuck his pinky out, showing off the plastic rings he was also wearing.
“Delicious,” he confirmed as he placed the cup back down.
After spending nearly all their time together, Fred found it extremely difficult to say goodbye to his daughter on her first day at Hogwarts, not wanting to part from his little girl who he adored so much.
You walked along the platform, reminiscing about your own Hogwarts days, and hoping your daughter would make just as many happy memories as you watched families say goodbye to each other and friends reunite. Fred was holding her trunk, and she clutched your hand tightly.
“I’m scared,” you daughter admitted to you, looking around at all the Hogwarts students running around, laughing and boarding the train.
You lifted up the hand you were holding and pressed a kiss to her knuckles, “You’re going to be just fine, baby. You’re gonna have an amazing time, and probably won’t even want to come home!”
She laughed, “I’ll always come home, Mum.”
You pulled her into a hug, “We’re only an owl away, you know that.” Evie nodded, “I know.”
“Gonna miss you sweetheart. Who am I supposed to prank your Mum with now? I’ve lost my partner in crime!” Fred grinned, laughing as Evie ran into his arms.
“You’ve got Uncle George,” she nodded over to where said younger twin was stood, saying goodbye to his eldest.
“Don’t tell him, but I prefer you.”
Evie giggled, before grabbing her trunk from Fred and bidding you both goodbye. She took a few steps towards the train, before turning back around, dropping her trunk and running back over to you, giving you another hug, before moving back into her dad’s arms.
“I love you both so much,” she mumbled, before heading to re-pick her trunk up.
“We love you too, princess,” Fred replied, watching as she headed towards the train. She settled into a compartment after a minute or so, and waved at you both through the window. You waved back, offering her a reassuring smile.
“Is it too late to have another one?” Fred joked, his hand snaking around your waist and sliding into your back pocket.
You slapped his arm playfully and let out a laugh, shaking your head at him. You watched the train leave, smiling sadly and waving again, before glancing at him, “What are we gonna do with an empty house?”
Fred winked as you began to head off the platform, “Oh I have a few ideas in mind.”
The goodbyes didn’t get easier each year, but the time apart was helped by the letters Evie sent to you, always keeping in touch where she could. You kept each of her letters, reading them when you missed her most.
Her latest letter held news you’d been waiting for since you’d sent her off, rushing to write her back as soon as you’d received it, and before Fred got home from work to help with the response.
“Did you read her letter? She’s going on a date!” He called through to you in the kitchen. The shock in his voice amused you, though you were expecting some kind of resistance to this new development in your daughter’s life.
“I know!” You replied cheerfully, stirring the food on the stove, “The boy sounds so lovely!”
“Y/n, love, I don’t think you understand,” Fred frowned as he entered the kitchen, heading over to press a kiss to your lips before continuing, “Our baby girl is going on a date with some pathetic thirteen year old boy. I was a thirteen year old boy once! I know how they think!”
“He sounds really nice! And Evie seems to really like him,” you wrapped your arms around his neck and pressed another kiss to his lips, one he returned immediately, “Besides, you asked me on a date when we were thirteen, look how we’ve ended up!”
“That’s different.”
“How is that any different?” You laughed, shaking your head as you turned to stir the food again.
Fred pouted, wrapping his arms around your waist from behind and leaning his chin on your shoulder, “Because that’s my baby girl.”
“Your baby girl who is going on her first date. It’s exciting!” You insisted, “And anyway, I may or may not have already written back to her saying you approve...”
Fred’s eyes widened, his mouth dropping comically, “You did what?!”
Fred was always going to be apprehensive about any boy Evie mentioned she was dating - you assumed that much - and the day she came home for Christmas, completely upset, did not help this matter.
“I’m gonna kill him,” Fred growled, his first clenching as he thought about the no-good boyfriend - well, ex boyfriend - of his little girl, who had thought it was a good idea to break up with her just before Christmas.
“Fred, no-“
“I’m gonna kill him with my bare hands.”
“Fred-“ You tried to calm him down, knowing that though his anger was justified, it wouldn’t make Evie feel any better.
“Look at our little girl! Look what he did to her!” His face softened as he glanced into the living room at his daughter, who was curled up in the corner of the sofa, eyes closed, tears staining her cheeks.
“Look, I’m angry too. But what she needs right now is a lot of chocolate, cuddles, and her parents’ support. She doesn’t need you yelling about the boy, okay?” You looked at him pointedly, waiting for him to nod at you. When he does, you smile at him and gesture towards the teen girl, “Go see if you can cheer her up, eh?”
“It’s what I’m best at.”
Eventually, much to yours and Fred’s delight, Evie found a man she ended up falling for completely after she graduated from Hogwarts.
He was kind, smart, definitely charming, and you took a liking to him immediately. Fred took a little while longer, however he eventually admitted he really liked the guy, and loved how happy he made Evie.
The day he came to you both asking for Evie’s hand in marriage, you agreed without hesitation, and when your daughter came to you to show you her ring, you’d screamed in happiness and starting talking weddings immediately, bringing out catalogues and deciding on a dress together.
“You’ll do my hair and makeup, right Mum?” She had asked.
“Of course I will baby!”
You sat her on your bed on the morning of the wedding, humming as you twirled her hair into an intricate style and applied her last minute makeup touches.
“You look beautiful, sweetheart,” you whispered, pressing your lips together as a few tears escaped your eyes.
She leaned over and wiped the tears away, pulling you into a hug, “Thank you, Mum.”
She stayed with you whilst you got yourself ready, laughing about old memories, and talking about the future, about memories you were yet to make.
You’d just finished getting dressed when Fred knocked on the door, bringing in your daughter’s wedding dress that Molly had been so kind as to alter for her.
He placed the dress down on the bed carefully, turning to look you up and down and whistling as you shook your head at him, before he turned to Evie, who was smiling up at him.
“When did my baby girl get so gorgeous, huh?” He grinned, leaning down to hug her.
She returned the hug with a laugh, “Dad, come on, stop it! You’re gonna make me cry, and Mum just finished helping me do my makeup.”
“I can’t help it. I look at you and I still see my little girl. But you’re all grown up now, I guess you’re not so little, huh?”
Evie smiled, pulling away from the hug to look at him, “I’ll always be your little girl, Dad.”
You finally ushered Fred out as you helped your daughter into her dress, adding last minute touches where needed.
“Where did the time go, eh?” You asked her, looking at her in the mirror, “I feel like you were a baby just yesterday.”
She smiled at your reflection, “Time flies when you’re having fun, right?”
When Fred saw his daughter in her wedding dress, he swallowed, feeling how he did when he had to say goodbye to her on Platform 9 3/4 every year - it was bittersweet, knowing she was leaving, but also just knowing she was going off to live her life, and make her own happy memories, made it all worth it.
“Ready to give me away?”
And as he looked down at his daughter, her excitement evident and barely fighting the grin that spread from ear to ear, he swallowed and couldn’t help but smile back at her.
He nodded, “Yeah, I’m ready.”
He felt her cling onto his arm and smiled to himself softly.
No matter what, no matter where life took her, she would always be his little girl.

A 98-Year-Old Widow Sells a 1950 Eames Cabinet for $48,000
The rare cabinet may be among fewer than half a dozen surviving examples.
At 98 years old, Nancy Allen made the difficult decision to leave her longtime home in Franklin, Michigan, to move closer to her children in Pennsylvania. Saying goodbye to decades’ worth of furniture and personal belongings, however, came with a silver lining when she auctioned off an Eames Storage Unit originally purchased for just $100 for a remarkable $48,000.
The sale was conducted by Le Shoppe Auction House, a new auction house in Keego Harbor, Michigan, operated by midcentury modern store Le Shoppe Too and Detroit Fine Art Appraisals, which the Allen family had enlisted to help sell the contents of their home.
Allen and her late husband, Maurice, got $500 from their families to help furnish their home as newlyweds in 1951. Maurice, who died in 2008, was an architect with an eye for design, and it was he who picked out the innovative and modular Eames Storage Unit over his wife’s objections.
“Nancy said, ‘Why are you buying this strange-looking cabinet?’ But he said, ‘I love the design of it,'” Deborah Slobin, cofounder of Le Shoppe Too, told Artnet News.
“Maurice was actually the right-hand man for Eero Saarinen, who designed the TWA air terminal in New York City and the Arch in St. Louis,” she added. “The Allens had remarkable pieces, quite a collection of original iconic furniture—American-made, Danish-made, with all the buzznames that are popular right now.”
Le Shoppe agreed to sell numerous pieces from the home, including an earthenware piece by Fausto Melotti that is expected to fetch $11,000 in an upcoming auction. But far and away the most exciting piece the family owned was the colorful, geometric design of the Eames Storage Unit, with its lightweight cabinets made from plastic-coated plywood, enameled Masonite, and steel framing.
“This thing is so pristine you would have thought it was a brand-new product,” Slobin said.
But a close inspection soon revealed this was something much more special.
The Herman Miller Furniture Company began producing the cabinet in 1950, and the Allens happened to buy one of the very first pieces off the line, priced at just $100. What sets their unit apart is its feet, which are made from gray rubber, rather than the black caps used in all but the earliest models.
“This is not only old, it’s super rare—it’s the first edition,” Terri Stearn, owner of Detroit Fine Art Appraisals, told Artnet News. “If there are five left in the world, I’d be surprised.”
Typical copies of the storage unit can sell for $6,000 to $8,000, but this one carried a presale estimate of $20,000. The auctioneers saw an immediate flurry of interest in the piece when they released the catalogue for the sale, with collectors offering up to $19,000 before bidding even opened.
The winning bid came from a curator at the Eames Institute, a new organization dedicated to the cabinet’s designers, husband-and-wife duo Charles and Ray Eames.
The previous record for this particular storage unit had been $36,250, set at Rago Auctions in 2017, according to the Artnet Price Database
After the auction’s conclusion, Allen’s children paid her a visit to tell her how it went. When they revealed the final price tag, she was astonished.
As Slobin tells it, “She fell back in her chair with a huge smile on her face and said, ‘Your father would have been so proud.'”

If Ever {Inception Arthur x Reader One Shot}
Requested by: Anonymous Wordcount: 1748 Summary: You and Arthur are at the Doctor’s appointment for your pregnancy check-up.
Arthur’s habit of leaning back in chairs never stopped, despite the fact that Eames often liked to mess with him when he did that. He was feeling rather safe in this Doctor’s office now, though. Leaning back, he was writing things in that little black notebook that he always had with him while you sat on the examining bed. You watched him with a smile as he tapped his pen against his lips, seemed to get an idea, and then wrote it down. “Say, what do you think of the name Michelle?” He questioned. “I think it’s rather pretty.” Before you had time to give him a reply, the door opened, startling Arthur into nearly falling backwards. Or he would have if it wasn’t for the wall that was behind him, keeping him up. He leaned forward and nearly jumped off of the chair, scratching the back of his neck. “Oh, hello Doctor, you startled me.”
“Hello Arthur,” Your family Doctor smiled as she came into the room. She did give the chair a quick glance and your husband sat back down. “How are we all feeling today?”
“A little bit of morning sickness still,” You admitted, holding your swollen belly. “And kicking up a storm - so at least I know that they’re alive in there.”
“A very good sign,” The doctor said with a nod. She noticed the book that was in Arthur’s hands, though it was hard not to. He was always fiddling with the thing. “Are you still trying to decide on names?”
“Arthur is having a hard time sticking to one,” You complained, smiling at your husband as the Doctor sat down at her desk and put your name into the computer to pull up your charts. “It seems like every hour he’s suggesting a new one.”
“Michelle,” Arthur chimed in. “Reminds me of France - remember when we went to France?”
“How could I forget?” You laughed, looking down at your stomach. “You know - we still haven’t even figured out if it’s a boy or a girl, Arthur. There’s no need to get stuck on a name yet. We don’t have to worry about it for a while...”
“Oh, the time will be sneaking on you before you know it,” The Doctor said, reading through your medical history. “We’re just going to start with blood pressure, okay?”
“Okay,” You nodded. You tried to make yourself comfortable but the extra weight that you had put on from this pregnancy was making your back ache. You focused on the handsome face of your husband across from you to try to make this go a little smoother. He was just trying to stay out of the Doctor’s way, but continually kept up eye contact with you, especially as the strap was velcroed around your arm.
“I just like things to be planned out, no surprises,” Arthur said, being his usual self. There wasn’t much that was spontaneous about him, but you loved that. He was always reliable. He was someone that you could count on even when times seemed to be at their roughest. He was the man with the plan, and though many of his friends tended to think he was boring, you saw it as a turn on. It was romantic that he planned to be alone and intimate with you when you were at your most fertile, because you both had plans to create this family. And here you were, five months later.
“Blood pressure is a little higher than normal, which is good,” The Doctor said, taking the cuff off of you and typed something into her computer. “May I feel your stomach for a minute?”
“Of course,” You said, popping up your shirt so that your stomach was exposed. It had been a couple of days since your belly button had changed. It had once been an innie but now was an out. “They’ve been kicking enough to pop it out,” You joked with the doctor who smiled.
She did a couple of soothing motions across your stomach, just feeling around. You closed your eyes and attempted to relax. Arthur was the only one who you let touch your stomach. “Good, good,” The doctor said, letting go of you to type into the computer again. “So, now’s the time for the big question. Do you want to know the sex?”
You looked over at Arthur who looked thrilled at the question. You couldn’t deny him that, not after that smile took over his entire face. “Yes, that would be great,” You said with a nod. “Though, of course, it only matters that they’re healthy in there.”
“Of course,” The doctor said. “Why don’t you lay back for me.”
You did so, feeling much more comfortable lying down than you were sitting up. You rubbed your stomach as the Doctor started to get the ultrasound machine ready. ‘Alright, my little sweet potato,” You thought to the baby as you caressed your own skin. You had a book all about the growth of fetuses, and that’s about how big your little one was now. You never told Arthur about that, having the feeling he wouldn’t like it if you kept referring to your child by food names.
Arthur couldn’t sit still in the chair anymore. He was getting too excited, his hands were starting to shake. He came and stood next to you, on the opposite side of the doctor, and held your hand in his. “This will be a little bit cold,” The doctor warned.
And it was. The gel that was put onto your stomach was enough to make you yelp. Which in turn made Arthur make a little squeaking noise in fear. Once you were over the feeling, you started to laugh though, and kissed the top of Arthur’s hand. “Sorry, it still managed to surprise me.”
“It happens all the time,” The Doctor chuckled. The gel was rubbed around and you looked up at Arthur’s red face. He was always embarrassed whenever he had a small outburst. You just kissed his hand again and smiled up at him. He was so undeniably handsome, it was easy to get lost in your own head when you were looking at his features. His dark eyes. His perfectly combed hair. Those protruding cheekbones.
God, you were so in love with this ridiculously good-looking man. Even if he did wear a lot of beige for a man his age. He somehow made it endearing.
“I wear this to blend in so you can stand out even more,” he told you whenever you poked fun at his clothing.
The machine touched your stomach. You both looked at the screen together, along with the Doctor. At first it was hard to tell what was what - everything was black and white. It looked more like a rorsach test than a baby, at least until the Doctor started to point things out. “All is looking good...” The Doctor said, both to herself and to you. You were beaming with joy. All that you wanted was positive news. You would have been devastated if it was bad. “So, are you sure that you want to know the sex?”
“Absolutely,” You said with a nod. Arthur mimed the sentiment.
The doctor moved the machine just a little bit, then announced to you, “It’s a boy!”
“No Michelle then,” You chuckled, squeezing Arthur’s hand. “Guess we’re going back to the name book.”
“And look,” The doctor said, calling your attention back. “He’s sucking his little thumb. Would you like me to print off some pictures for you?”
“We’d love that, thank you.”
After going through a list of questions about how you’ve been eating, how much exercise that you’ve been getting, if you’ve been taking your pre-natal vitamins, how much sleep you’ve been getting a night, you were given a copy of the ultrasound pictures and making an appointment for a couple of weeks into the future to be checked up again. All in all, your baby was healthy.
There was no such thing as a stressfree pregnancy, especially when you had a husband who liked to have a plan in place for anything that could happen. His stress often stressed you out. But you were healthy despite this, and you were excited to go out for a big lunch to feed you and the baby. Arthur had promised to take you out after this appointment. “So where are you taking us?” You asked, putting your seatbelt on. It felt a little tight and uncomfortable, but you lowered the strap to be around your pelvis rather than your bloated tummy.
“Wherever you want to go,” Arthur said, but he was stalling from starting up the car. He had taken hold of those Ultrasound pictures and was looking over them, again and again. Like he was trying to find something wrong. You reached out and put your hand gently on his knee, trying to draw his attention back to you.
“Babe, everything is fine. You heard the Doctor. A healthy baby boy. And we’re only halfway through the pregnancy so we still have time to pick a name. Actually... there’s been one on my mind for a while now...” You bit your lip, ready to tease him, ready to make him snap back to reality.
“What name?” Arthur asked, looking up from the picture to look at you. You really tried hard to put on a face like you were considering something that was really important. Like it was trying to burst out of you.
“I’ve been thinking....”
“Yes?” Arthur asked, impatient.
“Eames.”
“What?” Arthur’s eyebrows shot up towards his hairline, and then was taken over by a grumpy expression. “Definitely not.”
“Oh come on, it sounds a bit pretty, don’t you think?” You asked, nudging him with your elbow. It was enough for him to set the pictures down on his lap and start up the car.
“I’ll just make you some toast when we get home,” Arthur said as revenge, starting to drive away from the Doctor’s office. You laughed, but accepted it - knowing that once you got back to your house, you would be able to convince him, for the baby’s sake, to make something delicious.

The two Inception WIPs? 👀
Thank you! these are ancient. Now You Are Dangerous is a crossover in which Arthur is actually Brendan from Brick (Rian Johnson's high school neo-noir murder mystery starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and thus behaves as if he is in a film noir all the time. Its title is from a line in The Maltese Falcon that is reprised in Brick.
shoring fragments against my ruins brb is an Arthur/Eames English degree university!AU that is probably my favourite WIP I'll never finish, that title became self-prophetic and I'm still sad sometimes when I think about it
-
Eames, Arthur could not help noticing, had begun to pop up a lot. He kept sitting next to Arthur in seminars, plonking his hideous and horribly distended satchel between them.
“What the hell is in there?” said Arthur, annoyed, after one especially ostentatious attempt to wrestle the satchel into the meagre gap between their chairs.
“My Johnson,” said Eames, and winked. Arthur raised an eyebrow. “By which I mean to say, my Dictionary Of The English Language, by Samuel Johnson,” went on Eames, pulling the offending volume out of his bag and into his lap.
“Who the fuck carries a Johnson dictionary around with them?” said Arthur. “It’s so thick.”
“Precisely,” said Eames. “Nothing like a Johnson to make a man feel well-endowed.”
Next, he began appearing in the library when Arthur was there. Although it was only a few weeks into first term, Arthur had already earned a reputation for being the first after each seminar to clean out the shelves of not just next week’s text, but the relevant critical reading to boot. Arthur, the rest of his cohort would come to agree, was the worst. Arthur didn’t care what people thought. He was paying international fees and he wanted his money’s worth.
Moderns seminar over, Arthur dumped his stack of Ezra Pound readings into the book drop and swooped upon the library shelves. His seminar leader, notoriously flighty, kept changing the texts; she’d told them at the last minute that for the Hemingway seminar, they wouldn’t be doing A Farewell To Arms but The Sun Also Rises. It was rather late, thought Arthur, to get a copy off Book Depository, and so it was with chagrin that he saw that the last copy of The Sun Also Rises had disappeared from the shelf.
There was a familiar figure in the corner of his eye. Arthur turned to see Eames leaning against a shelf, pointedly flicking through The Sun Also Rises.
Arthur swallowed. “I need that book, Eames.”
“Looks like you’ve missed the boat,” said Eames, and then in aggravating tones, “darling.”
“Don’t call me that,” said Arthur. “And you have Davis for Moderns, you’re reading Ford Madox Ford next week.”
“You know a lot about my schedule, don’t you,” remarked Eames.
Arthur knew Eames’ schedule because he’d made it a point to look up his name on the seminar lists last week, just so he could see what other classes he had the annoying boy in. “All the better to avoid you with. If you don’t need Sun, why are you hogging it?”
“Surely you don’t need all those critical readings, yet you hog them all the same,” said Eames. “And who’s to say a man can’t just pick something up for leisurely reading? Get back in touch with good old Hem?”
“Eames,” said Arthur. “The book.”
Eames raised an eyebrow. “Or what?”
Arthur reached out, seized the nearest tome - which was the Norton Anthology of English Poetry, second edition - and dropped it on Eames’ foot.
The crash made heads turn all the way down the library floor. “Ow!” shouted Eames, his hand falling. Arthur plucked the book from his fingers and hightailed it to the borrowing station.
Eames caught up with him outside the library. “Are all you Americans so bloody barbaric?”
“I don’t know,” said Arthur. “Are all you Brits so goddamn insufferable?”
Eames huffed, and then he moved. Arthur found himself up against the library wall, fenced in with one large palm on either side of his torso and Eames suddenly, awfully close. He was very broad. Arthur had not quite noticed before.
“I - “ began Arthur, and was overcome by the terrible sensation of blanking that he had only ever experienced in one exam he had inadequately prepared for, and then spent the rest of his life endeavouring to ensure it never happened again. But Eames, it seemed, was not something you could prepare for.
Eames chuckled, low in his throat. His hand dropped to where Arthur’s satchel hung, and Arthur’s hand shot out by instinct to seize his wrist. But Eames only skimmed the lid of the satchel with a knuckle.
“Isn’t it pretty to think so?” And then suddenly he was out of Arthur’s space, hands in his pockets and strolling off across the quad.
Arthur walked the twenty minutes back to his halls in a daze. His Korean neighbour in 5D had her boyfriend over and they were having very loud sex, so he went instead to the kitchen to try to read, only he still couldn’t, because the afternoon’s events were buzzing under his skin until it felt fit to split. He should not have done that, thought Arthur, word was only going to get around, as if the rest of his course didn’t already think he had no chill, though of course when had he been the kind of person who cared what other people thought? Though also when had he been the kind of person who resorted to actual bodily harm to get ahead in class? And above all Eames’ expression when Arthur had dropped the book on his foot, more shock than rage; the way Eames had chuckled when he had Arthur against the wall; the way he hadn’t taken the book but instead quoted it back at Arthur and then sloped off - “oh, shit,” said Arthur, “oh, shit, this is not good, I cannot be having with this,” and he went to the tap to get some water, but because it was that kind of day, the tap came off in his hand and water started spouting ceiling-wards in an arc that perfectly framed the face of his Nigerian flatmate from 5A as she walked in on him with the tap in his hand, dripping wet.
“Jesus, 5C,” said his flatmate, “you have no chill.”
