Eagle-Eye Cherry - Save Tonight 1997
"Save Tonight" is a song written and performed by Swedish musician Eagle-Eye Cherry, released on 7 October 1997 as the lead single from his debut album, Desireless. The album went platinum in the US and sold over four million copies worldwide. The title track “Desireless” is a cover of a song by Cherry's late father Don Cherry from his a free-jazz album Relativity Suite (1973). Eagle-Eye Cherry has Choctaw descent through his paternal grandmother and African-American through his grandfather, and is the half-brother of singer Neneh Cherry (poll #212) through their mother. Cherry co-wrote and sang on "Wishing It Was" on Santana's 1999 album Supernatural, as well as in films such as Wim Wenders' The Soul of a Man, Y Tu Mamá También, The Love of the Game, GO, Best Laid Plans, Holes, Billy Elliot, and Over Her Dead Body.
"Save Tonight" gained substantial radio success, reaching number three in Ireland, number five in the US, number six in the UK, and number two in Sweden. It was awarded the Rockbjörnen award in the "Swedish song of the year 1997" category, and was voted song of the year in New Zealand. The monochrome music video for the song was filmed in Stockholm's Södermalm district, and features Cherry playing different characters and seeing the story from different perspectives. The video is edited to make it appear as a single continuous take.
"Save Tonight" received a total of 69,6% yes votes!

Eagle-Eye Cherry - Save Tonight
There's a log on the fire, and it burns like me for you Tomorrow comes with one desire, to take me away (oh, it's true)

[Verse 1] Go on and close The curtains 'Cause all we need Is candlelight You and me And a bottle of wine Gonna hold you tonight Uh, yeah
[Pre-Chorus] Well, we know I'm going away And how I wish I wish it weren't so So, take this wine And drink with me Let's delay our misery
[Chorus] Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone
[Verse 2] There's a log On the fire And it burns Like me for you Tomorrow comes With one desire To take me away Oh, it's true
[Pre-Chorus] It ain't easy To say goodbye Darling, please Don't start to cry 'Cause, girl, you know I've got to go Oh And, Lord, I wish it wasn't so
[Chorus] Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone
[Pre-Chorus] Tomorrow comes To take me away I wish that I, that I could stay Girl, you know I've got to go Oh Lord, I wish it wasn't so
[Chorus] Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone
[Chorus] Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone Save tonight And fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow Tomorrow I'll be gone
[Post-Chorus] Tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow I'll be gone Tomorrow I'll be gone
[Outro] Save tonight Save tonight Save tonight Save tonight Oh, that's right? Save tonight Save tonight Save tonight Save tonight Yeah, that's right?

Ever hear a song and it brings up a really happy memory?
That's this song, every single time.
Nicole B threw the best parties. And not even like ragers with alcohol or anything. Like legitimately fun junior high and high school parties with games. I remember one that was in 7th grade where Gavin played this song. I'm not sure if it was on his guitar or Nicole's.
We lost Gavin the year we (our graduating class) turned 27. He wasn't stereotypically popular (like maybe the jocks, etc), but he was fairly popular because he was such a nice guy. He talked to everyone and didn't have a mean bone in his body (well, until he got bone cancer and had to have his leg amputated – bad joke, I know).
In his 20s he had a electronic/hip hop group called Hives Inquiry Squad. I'm not really into those genres, but I found some songs online and was blown away. I knew he was really talented, but I didn't realize how talented until I heard his music.
The last time I saw him was in the Harrison subway station. We ended up at the same college, but were in different degree programs, so I didn't run into him any other time while we were there, which was a shame. But he seemed genuinely happy to see me and catch up a bit. He was telling me about something he was working on or had coming up with his music. He was just so excited and full of life. We were going different ways, so when my train came, he gave me a hug and told me it was great to see me again.
Not long after he died, I was watching The Fault in Our Stars the night before my birthday. I looked at my iPad and saw a Facebook notification saying it was his birthday. And I cried. That movie is really sad, but I think what did it was that the love interest had the same cancer he had. He even had to have his leg amputated too. So I cried. Even though he wasn't like my best friend and we hadn't kept in touch, it just hit me. It reminded me of how short life is (especially since his birthday was the day before mine). How I wish I had kept in touch. How I wish I had heard his music before we lost him. Maybe he would have played a show I could have gone to. But it was too late.
Anyway, every time I hear that song, I'm transported back to Nicole B's backyard and Gavin playing it on guitar. Rest in peace, Gavin.

This is the most 2002 white fratboy song ever recorded.
And it was released in 1997 by a biracial Swedish man whose actual given name is Eagle-Eye Cherry.
This is like when I found out the singer Robyn isn't Black and it shattered my entire world for 2 weeks. I was a very intense 13 year old.
She's Swedish, too.
Apparently living in a Socialist utopia makes you really good at confusing me with music.
