Bonus internet points will be awarded to anyone who actually tries this exercise before voting.
Assume you need to get the spelling at least somewhat close, and if a character has multiple names, only one counts. Also, if a character doesn't have a canonical name, I'm sorry, but "that guy's wife" doesn't count.
For reference, if you can name the 9 members of the Fellowship, the eponymous Hobbit and his 13 dwarf buddies, 3 prominent women, and the guy who runs the Rivendell B&B, that's 27 characters right there. And you probably also know the name of a dragon.
For further reference, Tolkien Gateway has 637 (!!) pages dedicated to Third Age characters. (Don't click that link until you've voted, of course)
Edit: Your humble pollmaker gave this a try, and got as far as 73 before deciding she was too tired to keep trying to remember dwarf and Silm names. If you also want to share (and don't mind people being incredulous at your having forgot ____), pastebin allows you to paste text and share it for free. :)

Do you know of any fics under 10k that aren’t too angsty? ❤️
Tumblr media
Hi anon, I most certainly do! Thanks so much for sending this ask, I was super excited when I saw it because I’m always happy to celebrate short fics - they could use more appreciation! I’ve wanted to do a proper shorts reclist for a while so I indulged myself and went big, hope you don’t mind! Putting this together was quite hard - going through my bookmarks I realized that I usually go for angsty shorts 💀 so I tried my best not to include anything too extreme, I hope these are okay!
This became a lil monster with 40 recs (and I have lots more hehe) so I decided to sort them by genre - the last category includes light angst (more on the contemplative side) because I can’t help myself. Shout-out to @tackytigerfic for giving me a 2nd opinion and helping me polish this - and for being a darling in general. Happy readings!

36. Our Little Life by @tackytigerfic (2020, M, 7k)
I’ve screamed about this brilliant fic recently; inventive, poignant and utterly romantic, this fic shows all the ways in which Harry and Draco find each other across space and time.
37. the keys to your kingdom by thistle_verse (2016, E, 7.5k)
A beautiful love story packing an impressive amount of character, conflict and emotion. We are invited to witness as work partners Harry and Draco finally take a leap of faith and grow out of their casual arrangement.
38. Clear As Mud by scoradh (2005, M, 9.8k)
Subtle and heart-wrenching, the sharp and clever narrative creates fascinating dynamics between this brilliantly written Draco and poor oblivious Harry trying to make sense out of it. An all-time fave. Cw: infidelity (not Drarry).
39. fine i'll hold my breath / til i forget it's complicated by teatrolley (2015, E, 10k)
Fucks buddies gone wrong but make it soft so we get to watch as pining Draco patiently waits for Harry to get the memo. Sweet and intimate, with lots of late night talks and comfortable silence.

8 3/4
1 1/2
Dawdling writing bit of rough draft of note to Countess Panin snowy morning Reaumur 8 1/2º in my room at 9 a.m. – Breakfast at 10 in about 40 minutes –
Hardly over before Colonel of the Engineers and Mrs. Gottman nice intelligent people called, and then Mr. Baehr, and then the General Gouverneur’s nephew and aide du camp Mr. Tolstoy and then the Prince de Georgia or properly Gurinsky so that it was 12 10/’’ by my watch (and as it appeared afterwards to be 3 hours instead of 2 1/2 hours too late) and 12 40/’’ by the day here the carriage having waited 3/4 hour –
Mr. Tolstoy had met us the evening we spent chez la Princess Tcherkasky – And saw us (tho’ we knew nothing about it) when we drove to tea at Aleschkowo (vide p.[page] 10) and told George to desire our Courier to bring us here in the part of the Town where all the nobility lived and not take us to any of the Inns in the basse ville – Tolstoy a gentlemanly intelligent fast-French-speaking young man –
Drove directly across the Oka (the verst-long bridge of boats taken away in the winters) a busy enough scene of laden traineaus and people – To all appearance terra-firma – Merely its valley-form to indicate the bed of the river – Drove straight to the Cathedral Church of St. Macaire – Lofty light and handsome rich handsome Iconostase and altar of solid silver given by the merchants that frequent the Fair which begins 15 July and lasts till 25 August O.S. – Large candelabra also en argent massif – Pavement of about 18 in.[inches] squared iron flags – Passed thro’ to the winter church in the large neat building the residence of the clergy at the back of the cathedral – The winter church a beautiful chapel covered vaulted roof painted in imitation of a lightly clouded sky – Effect warm and admirable – Here too rich, beautiful iconostase – Did not go to the Armenian church or Mahomedan Mosque –
Tumblr media
The Pechersky Ascension Monastery (in the background), where the Church of St. Macaire was located.
Then to the Governor’s apartments – Large handsome house – The bel étage on a forest of open arcades – Then along the Dvor (Gastinoi Dvor) – Went into one of the shops – Consisting one large room below and a small one and above a good sitting room, and a small bedroom? and a cabinet – This shop lets for 800/- for the whole time of the Fair – But there are still better situations which let for 1000/- - the frontage seemed to be 3 arcades on one side and 2 on the other –
The merchants live in their shops – 2635 shops en pierre, and as was said afterwards chez le General Gouverneur 2600 en bois – All the pillars supporting the galleries of the Dvor are en fonte (cast iron) – And said the General Governor at dinner the length of the Dvor is just one English mile; and a person going into every shop and perfectly well knowing his way (so as not to go out of his way) will have walked 40 English miles at the end of his journey!
Extraordinary ville de boutiques – Bazaar par excellance ou se fait un commerce qui valait l’année passé £8,000,000 said the General Gouverneur at dinner for he said the rouble ought to be 25/- per 1£ but Mr. Marc would certainly be right in giving only 21/- this depending upon circumstances – But said the Governor the merchants always cachent la valeur actuelle – One might add 1/2 to their statement ∴[therefore] instead of 8 millions one should say 12 millions Sterling! – Could not imagine why the merchants should try to hide the real amount of value – No reason for their doing so – It made no difference to them – But they always did hide it –
Tumblr media
Lower Bazaar in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (c. 1872)
The large handsome salle at the Governor’s apartments was intended by General Betancourt (a Spaniard the planner of the Dvor) for a Bourse – But no! That did not take – The merchants liked to settle an in their own private rooms; and some 8 or 10 millionaires in settling the price of the Tea, settled the price of every other article – People bought and sold according to the rate that should be fixed for the tea some much p.[per] c.[cent] without at all knowing what that would be till at the last – There were merchants that regularly bought tea to the amount of 6 or 8 millions, each! – The principal business is in tea, iron, and cotton –
On entering the winter church Tolstoy pointed to the height to which the waters rose in 1829 – Apparently about 3 ft.[feet] up the door-jamb – The damage done was considerable – But such a great rise was extraordinary – It had been once thought said the Governor (at dinner did not see him elsewhere today) to place the Dvor on the Kremlin Mountain (did Madame B-[Baehr] say it it was 75 or 175 ft.[feet] above the level of the rivers?) but this would not have suited the merchants – They could not have landed their merchandise with sufficient ease – Betancourt was was misinformed that the waters only rose 3 ft.[feet] above the present emplacement before its being raised but instead of raising 3 ft.[feet] it has been found necessary to raise 20 ft.[feet] in some places at an expense of 11,000,000/- but the present Emperor has been here twice and was so pleased with the Town ville, its situation, prospects &c. that he has taken it under his especial protection and spares no expense 17,000,000 more are now in progress of laying out in a large handsome house palace for the General Governor to be finished next summer (we saw it in the Kremlin) –
One beautifully proportioned Corinthian columned salle de reception) – entrepôts – Sundry additional levellings (gigantic ones already done) the new chaussée &c. &c. the chaussée to be finished in 2 years from this time – Done as far as Vladimir, and part done here – Begins by a magnificent quay along the Oka – The quays here and cloaque can only be seen in summer – The ville on one side the Oka, the Dvor on the other and then the Volga –
For the moment my idea of the ground and the junction of the 2 rivers is not nette (not quite clear) – But the ville as we looked from the Dvor and crossed the river is very picturesquely drawn in a long line along the high bank of the Oka crowned gits picturesque Kremlin – At the Kremlin, not a large enclosure, no cannon or sign of a fortress –
Saw the new Cathedral built in the old style and in commemoration of the old venerable cathedral containing the tombs of many of the princes of Souzdal and of Cosma Minim Souk-Hourouky, the patriotic butcher, stirrer up of the people and Prince Pojarski who rid their country of the Poles (about A.D. 1612) – A copy of the banner of the patriot troops marched under (a virgin 1/2 length with an inscription in substance pour la foi et pour le roi) hangs up en face du tombeau de Minine or rather of the inscription for the tomb is just below in the catacombs substantial lofty brick vaults, 3 corresponding to nave and side aisles – On the chalky rock, and dry as possible – We walked thro’ them –
This Cathedral lofty and handsome and très bien eclairée – The domed ceiling (the domes) in a blue pattern upon white (good effect) the side walls covered with fresco painting which contrasts well with the snow white polished scaglinola of the plain square huge Corinthian pillars that support the roof – The Iconostase rich as usual –
Tumblr media
The  Saint Michael the Archangel Cathedral of the Kremlin in Nizhny Novgorod. (image  © A.Savin, WikiCommons)
We peeped into the Military Hospital room for 550 – About 450 patients there – all cleanliness and neatness here as in the hospital for poor old people of both sexes, and in the maison des fous – About 15 or 20 men and as many women there in all? – No noise – All still and orderly as if the patients were as reasonable as their keepers – One of the men on our going up to his room (the rooms perhaps 5 yards + 4 yards) came to the door-window (a glass window iron barred in each door) and said in Russian very quietly Ah! Je croyais qu’il était le General Gouverneur, mais ce sont des vagabonds!” – Mr. Baehr had joined us in the Kremlin Cathedral and went with us to the Hospitals – Very civil and intelligent – It seems he is Procureur –
It was now 3 by the Town clocks – Obliged to return – Home at 3 10/’’ – Dressed as quickly as we could – The carriage waited for us – At the Governor’s house at 4 1/4 or I think not later – The femme du General Gouverneur an agreeable, nice, good sort of aimable person – Dinner soon announced – Very nice good dinner soup and pâtés – A Marinade de Poisson – Round cotelettes de boeuf round a centre of spinach and little roast potatoes as big as marbles – Then Sterlet du Volga (stewed – Excellent garnished with pieces of lemon which one takes to correct the richness) then roast poulet or game and cucumbers handed round at the same time (salés) – Then a jelly – Then 2 plats of sweet meats (a large long excellent sort of plum and cherries), and then a little tumbler of chill-taken-off water in an empty glass saucer (nobody seems to wash anything but the mouth)and then retired to the salon – Coffee immediately – Sat a few minutes – Quite long enough for Madame B-[Baehr] evidently wished to retire to take her siesta, and said we should want repose –
Home about 6 10/’’ – Sat slumbering dared not undress immediately for fear of anyone’s coming – Tea about 8 – Had Domna put away all my things and it is now 12 25/’’ by the Town clocks just as I have written so far – Snowing in the morning till about or after 11 – Afterwards fine –
The 3 Lords Paget Clarence and 2 others were at the marriage of the Princess Marie and then here at the Fair last summer and afterwards with the Emperor at Borodino – 125,000 reviewed – 2 corps of the army – But very few of the guards there – The Lords P-[Paget] bought a great deal at the fair – Delighted with it – sorry they could not stay longer than 3 days – Promised to write to the B-s[Baehrs] but had not written – Mr. B-[Baehr] gave me a little set of views of the Dvor and promised me a feuille of the business done at the Fair last year – Very civil –
Reaumur 10 1/2º in my room now at 12 1/2 tonight – Mr. Tolstoy said we had more than Reaumur -20 on Thursday night – Thinks we had even as much as Reaumur -25º - no greater cold here than Reaumur -30º to 35º - No greater in Siberia than Reaumur -40 and difficult to measure this – Mercury freezes did the Governor say at Reaumur -35º and spirit of wine only marks 3 or 4 degrees plus bas –

The Linc - Eagles’ pass rush ranks first in NFL
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Ranking all 32 NFL teams’ pass-rush units after Week 6 - PFF Team Pass-Rush Grade: 85.9. Team Pressure Percentage: 42% (1st). Team Pressure Percentage when Blitzing: 50.0% (25th). Top Pass-Rusher (Pass-Rush Grade): DI Fletcher Cox (91.1).
Jim Schwartz’s plan for Cam Newton - BGN How do you plan to deploy a pass rush against a mobile quarterback? Do you contain on both sides? Do you add a spy to keep tabs for the entire game or in key situations? What if your data presents a different picture? What if it says you don’t need to do any of that? For Super Bowl Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, devising his rush plan starts with the quarterback, not the offensive line. He detailed this philosophy in a 2015 C.O.O.L. (Coaches of Offensive Linemen) Clinic.
A look ahead to the Eagles’ 2019 salary cap - PhillyVoice If the Eagles opted not to pick up Nick Foles’ option in 2019, or if they traded him, that would get them back under the cap immediately. That decision will seemingly be a no-brainer, particularly if the team views Nate Sudfeld as a legitimate No. 2 quarterback behind Carson Wentz. I believe they already do, and will even more so by 2019. Foles leaving would net almost $19 million in savings.
Still Shuffling - Iggles Blitz Does Darren Sproles have the worst hamstring injury in history? Yikes. You wonder if the Eagles should just sit him until after the bye week. If he’s not healthy by then, do you just give him the Old Yeller treatment? Sproles has been a terrific player for a long time and I hate that his final season has gone like this. It would be great if he could get healthy and help the team with some big plays down the stretch.
How Jordan Mailata has already inspired the next crop of NFL hopefuls Down Under - ESPN As Australia’s Jordan Mailata awaits a maiden NFL start, his amazing story has already inspired the next crop of athletes Down Under to pursue a career in American football. Mailata is reportedly edging closer to a first regular season game for Philadelphia Eagles, after first heading to Los Angeles for a workout last November. From there, the Aussie was invited to train at the IMG Academy in Florida, before the Eagles came calling with their final pick of the 2018 NFL Draft back in April.
NFL Forecast - Rotogrinders CAR @ PHI - 15mph sustained winds with stronger gusts, impact to deeper throws and kicks.
Torrey Smith’s homecoming game couldn’t come at a better time - Cat Scratch Reader He’s been a great addition to the Panthers, indeed. His leadership ability has shown with the younger receivers. Although it’s been a quiet season for the 29-year old, that’s not entirely his fault. Smith’s longest catch of the season was a 26-yarder against Atlanta in Week 2. The Panthers only have two completions for 20+ yards so far, which puts them last in the league. Adjusting to first year Norv Turner’s offense, Carolina simply hasn’t had many opportunities. But as the season progresses, Turner says they’re working on having a complete passing game and creating explosive plays.
Off The Beat: Jerseys? Sure! - PE.com Upon researching the Eagles’ uniform trends, I was surprised to find that the Eagles have worn their standard road uniforms (white jerseys, green pants) just once since January 1, 2017. White-on-green was the uniform combo for Nick Foles’ first start of 2017, when the Eagles defeated the Giants 34-29.
Get ready to see Eagles’ little-known DT Treyvon Hester take a bigger role - NBCSP Doug Pederson said Friday defensive tackle Treyvon Hester is “definitely going to be asked to do a little bit more this week” against the Panthers. Based on Hester’s performance last week, that’s a good thing. The Eagles added the 26-year-old defensive tackle to their practice squad in early September and promoted him to the active roster less than a month later. With Haloti Ngata’s lingering calf injury and Tim Jernigan’s return in question, the Eagles are probably going to ask more of Hester going forward. “Treyvon is an explosive player,” defensive line coach Chris Wilson said. “He has some similarities to Tim Jernigan in regards to how twitchy he is on the backside. A lot of times, Fletcher Cox gets a lot of attention and [Hester] has the ability to win some 1-on-1s. We need that.”
Who are the best Eagles players of the last 25 years? - Press of AC I’ve seen a few things in the last 25 years of covering the Eagles. There were good teams (2017, 2004) and bad (1998, 2012). The same holds true for coaches. Andy Reid was good. Rich Kotite and Chip Kelly were bad. Ray Rhodes was a mixture of both, but also my favorite Eagles coach because of his honesty and colorful way of explaining situations, even if that color was blue. Reid had the most sustained success, reaching five NFC championship games and a Super Bowl during his 14-year tenure. But Doug Pederson’s the only one to win a championship, so he goes to the top of the list. Here’s my choices for the top players at each position over the last 25 years. I’m sure you’ll disagree on a few, but there really aren’t any wrong answers.
FANPULSE - Redskin & Cowboy fans both predicting victory; somebody has to be wrong - Hogs Haven The Cowboys have lost to 3 teams this season - the Panthers, Seahawks and Texans. All three teams are ranked in the top-11 in the NFL in Points Allowed per game. The Redskins rank 8th, ahead of both the Panthers and Texans. The Redskins have beaten 3 teams this season — the Cardinals, Panthers and Packers. All three teams are in the bottom half of the league in Points Scored per game. The Cowboys rank 26th, below both the Panthers and Packers.
The Four Must-See Matchups for NFL Week 7 - The Ringer A matchup between the NFL’s no. 1 scoring offense and no. 1 scoring defense pits Drew Brees’s enduring excellence against the Ravens’ miserly defense. What else will we learn this weekend?
Geoff Schwartz’s 6 best and 5 worst NFL offensive lines heading into Week 7 - SB Nation Welcome back to the new, weekly offensive line column where I discuss the top five and bottom five offensive lines. The top five and bottom five aren’t likely to change much week to week, so I’ll give you the changes and highlight the units that are pointing up and pointing down. Let’s begin. The top offensive lines in the NFL, in no order: Packers, Eagles, Saints, Patriots, Steelers, Rams.

Sten Hugo Hiller - Mountain Climbing - Limited Tonnage
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat
Brought to you by ANN, A News channel for Mecha Combat
Highlighting the October 3319 Limited Tonnage
Going on a mountain climb among those of higher level, bigger formation and more tonnage is normally not the road to success. On K3 some of these considerations was in effect. Firstly I was lowest level of all the contenders, more than half the opposition had at least 20 Levels on me. But as this was limited tonnage, 1250 tons on my mountain, formation size was more or less irrelevant, and those who had twice my tonnage or more had misunderstood the rules and would be easily dispatched. At the 50 minutes to scramble signal I had gotten to the slopes That left the big problems, those with correct formations and tonnage several levels above me or with a lineup I couldn’t match. Bernhard Johnson Had claimed the top, and all my fancy footwork didn’t help me past his first line. I started to count myself lucky if I managed to blow up three of his mechs. Of course, my place on the slopes was by no way secure, behind me was canny and dangerous opponents. Christine Mainer, KiloTone, Lachance and Harding to mention those I feared most. At get go nothing much had changed, and I sat quietly for a while. Still no action at the 20 minute mark, so I started to chug Hatorades and see if I could get past Johnsons first line. The RNG gods smiled at me, Or perhaps he just rolled down the mountain because an uncontrollable mirth. Anyway I was at the top. KiloTone woke up and we had a vicious seesaw over who would be allowed to stand at the top. He took a short break, probably to chug down another super, And Johnson finished laughing and blew me off the top. Sacrificing my remaining supers to the RNG Gods didn’t help, but standing on the slopes as lowest contender is a good showing. Those who stood at the tops to receive Honor, Gold Nephilax and invitations to higher Mountains this time were:
Div 1 (21 players): Gary Allsop, FUSION (4s) Div 2 (16 players): Theo Peeples, The Isle of Misfit Toys (6s) Div 3 (22 players): Bernhard Johnson, Death`s Collectors (1m,31s) Div 4 (43 players): Robert C Goetz Sr., Deaths Collectors (seconds) Div 5 (16 players): Richard Kangas, Black Star Suicide Squad (5m,10s) Div 6 (37 players): Darryl Proctor, Black Star Bandits (1m,55s) Div 7 (36 players): Chris Page, Death`s curse (12m,14s) Div 8 (30 players): Jack Wade, Mad Pork (6m,28s) Div 9 (37 players): Tygra_, Mech Point Academy "A" Team (12m,54s) Div 10 (25 players): Salvo Messina (56m,10s) Div 11 (9 players): LionOThundera, Karma (1h,21s) Div 12 (5 players): Michael Walker (7h,40m)
Total players: 297, Total Medals: 192 (of 216 possible)
Quite a battle here. Three Golds decided during the last 10 Seconds, 6 more during last 15 minutes. Collectors got as only clan two Golds, two unafiliated players also won golds, and my Guess is they will receive several invitations to join clans over the next days.
Div 2 and 5 not filled up can be blamed on the brackets, div 11 and 12 seem to be back to not enough known about the KOTM.
As I slowly gathered my destroyed force my division winner, Bernhard Johnson (#922277) came and helped me pick up the pieces. I decided to pick his brain and get an interview as the opportunity presented itself
Sten Hugo Hiller  Congratulations on a well deserved win. While I might have wished for it to end 92 seconds earlier, the result is what counts. Your career started back in `02 and you were with the Overlords III until you switched to Murderbots in 09, and Collectors in `10. Looks to suit you well.
Bernard Johnson Yeah; I haven't been playing nearly as long as most. But I'm very competitive...obviously. The Overlords were...shrinking and eventually our Leader left and I went looking for a more active home. The AFF have been good to me.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Yes they certainly have from your results. Your first gold was in triple Rainbow back in June `04 and this was Your 15th, righ`t?
Bernard Johnson Something like that. I started keeping a spread sheet of all mechs per level along with equipment and weapons and have been calculating their relative combat values. It’s been extremely helpful in weighing my options to get the most bang for my...Niodes. Still, sometimes its just luck. I have also tracked the KOTM events and have a special build for almost everyone. That guarantees at least a Bronze place in every event. Those add up!
Sten Hugo Hiller  You can’t argue with a success like yours. But even you might have some weaknesses, what is your preferred format, limited or unlimited?
Bernard Johnson As my record will show; Single Rainbow is my specialty. I have noticed that there are very few who have a carefully crafted SRB line up. I use it every clan war and win Gold every KOTM "E Pluribus Unum" event. Unless one specializes in it, it’s hard to beat someone who does. In Clan Wars, it doesn't get many defense wins, because most avoid it. That takes a whole column of win potential away from an opponent...no RNG chances if they won't even try. The y believe that they will lose and they are usually right. So, yeah. I love Single Rainbow. It requires very careful management that most aren't really ready to invest the time and attention to.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Yes your Single rainbow is impressive, and you have won other rainbow events as well. Can I assume rainbows are your favorite formation type?
Bernard Johnson Well; only SRB and DRB. I find that TRB at levels that have 35 or less total slots is something that nearly everyone already has. There are some that have 20 Boreas or whatever, but most everyone can scrounge up 3 of each type for at least 30 slots. My preference really has to do with potential success rate...I like winning. (What can I say?) My goal when competing is being the best I can and I found a particular specialty that I cannot just be competitive, but be fairly dominant. Works for me. Some other specialties are lacking. The 1200 Ton and 10 Ton max...everyone can put one of those together and rely on a bit of luck. No real planning or niche. I have them to combat them, but they are simple and require no real forward thinking to compete in.
Sten Hugo Hiller  You still need the mechs, weapons and equipment. Another type of limited format is the weapon types, do you feel comfortable with them?
Bernard Johnson Not really. I have found, so far anyway, that those don't seem to be worth specializing in. I have load outs for them, but I have found that having an 'Anti type' is just as effective. E.G. a missile event means that specialist load up on missile shields that are vulnerable to fire. I run a split of missile and ice then and though I have never gotten gold; I do well without having to payout anything but a bit of time and thought.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Yes, enemy’s weakness is never to be ignored. The last general type of limited is the weight type. What is your preference there, mechtype or tonnage, say 50ton or Oggun?
Bernard Johnson I tend to favor the 50 ton. Many believe that the Oggun is best at that weight class; but I find that what the Luison gives up in armor and 3X damage multiplier is more than made up in having more equipment slots, carries more weapons and is faster. So nobody at my level has all Fides or Vizi; but sprinkling a few in there with Luison's that can get a damage bonus from every weapon type and have a very high chance of 2X damage are very effective.
Sten Hugo Hiller  So all in all (except for rainbow), what kind of KOTM would you like to see in the near future?
Bernard Johnson SRB always; all the time! What else?! GOLD BABY! I would also be interested in a SRB Chrono event that would be a little different. A Warg, iMEch or Luison specialist is fine. And for a change of pace; an all crystal mech and equipment would be new and interesting; though I don't know if it would be something that the game's code would allow.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Neither do I, but from your mouth to the Developers ears. You mentioned chrono, do you prefer them over the sudden death events?
Bernard Johnson No. I prefer that short ones. Since I have at least a Bronze viable line up for everything; the more they run; the more goodies I can accumulate and/or sell! The Chrono that's running right now is perfect: 8 hours and done. Get your prize and on to the next!
Sten Hugo Hiller  Selling stuff to get other things. Some have mentioned that resources are tight now, do you feel that to be a problem?
Bernard Johnson Definitely! I used to get up a half an hour earlier so I could watch endless streams of videos for free lasers; which of course, were sold for Niodes and resources. The new Circuit fights work well for me for crystals, Ferrite and Bioptics, but the influx of premium currency has slowed to a trickle for the last couple of months. I certainly hope that they return! I can sleep when I'm dead! Give Niodes now!
Sten Hugo Hiller  We can just hope. As one of the more accomplished players there are many who would listen to your advice on what mechs/weapons/equipment you recommend. What is the best advice you can give them?
Bernard Johnson Follow the leaders. You can watch what Fusion and Zeon and the Misfits are doing; even if you have to attack them and get obliterated. See what works; then plan accordingly. I have my next 10 mech expansion slots already planned out; my next 50 points from levels and CW wins planned out, my next weapon and gear purchases planned out. All based on what clearly works. Note that all gear is not created equal; speed kills, so Engines are always priority 1. Some crystal gear is nearly as good for some slots and mech types as niode gear, so don't buy Niode equipment when crystal will work. Spend those on the weapons and engine and chassis slots that are incomparable to the crystal versions. Resource management and careful planning is the key to this game, just like any strategy and/or building game. Track, plan, scheme...and be patient. Keep thinking and success will follow.
Sten Hugo Hiller  Thank you for your deep Insights. Now it seem the Collectors and the AFF have a big celebration coming up. Any final Words?
Bernard Johnson Three words: Squad Wars Gold! Get some!
Sten Hugo Hiller  Cant, we will probably meet you again... For the others, good Luck
Upcoming Event King Chrono. That is get Your best formation and run to the mountain to get Your Pictures taken near the top to score points. but be quick about it because:
Event ends February 4 between 0300 and 0400 New York Time.

Deducting business meals & other expenses on Schedule C
Millions of Americans are self-employed. In the Internal Revenue Service's Statistics of Income count for tax year 2017, more than 26 million of U.S. nonfarm taxpayers filed as sole proprietors, submitting Schedule C along with their annual Form 1040 individual tax returns.
The great thing about Schedule C is that is offers lots of ways sole proprietors, of which I'm one, can reduce our gross self-employment earnings.
But one of those deductions that many likely claimed on their 2017 Schedule C has in subsequent years become a source of confusion and consternation.
The tax break for business meals and entertainment expenses got caught up in the tax code rewrite known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). By the time that hastily-written tax overhaul became law on Dec. 22, 2017, it had eliminated some tax breaks.
Among those that was axed was the business deduction for the costs of entertaining clients, both potential and current.
Business meals, before and after tax reform: Prior to the TCJA, business taxpayers could claim 50 percent of their work-related meal and entertainment expenses. The tax law repealed the deduction for entertainment expenses. Many in the tax world, however, read the legislative language as erasing not only entertainment (and amusement or recreation activities, like taking clients to sporting events) expenses, but also the closely associated business meal costs.
Congress said it meant to do away only with the entertainment, not food, component. The job of putting that intention into practical tax effect was left to the IRS, which has been working on clarifying this deduction since the TCJA's enactment.
On Feb. 21, the tax agency issued the latest in its series of proposed rules on TCJA's changes to allowable meal and entertainment expenses.
This latest rule-making notice, which is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Feb. 26, reiterates that the costs of business meals while entertaining clients are deductible at 50 percent of the cost as long as they are reflected on a separate receipt.
In addition, the notice examines the deductibilty of other specific food expenditures that were raised by comments on earlier proposed IRS rules in this area. You can read the full, official but-not-yet-published notice for details. I recommend, however, you check the recent blog post on this matter by Ed Zollars of Kaplan Financial Education.
In that Current Federal Tax Developments item, Zollars notes that "the IRS indicated in the preliminary guidance given in Notice 2018-76 that the agency did not believe the law barred deductions for most meals. The preamble to the [most recent IRS] proposed regulations confirms this treatment."
Schedule C overview: OK, now that meal deductions are cleared up — sort of; the IRS will issue final regulations once it gets comment on this latest proposal after it's published on Feb. 26 — let's take a look at all of Schedule C, this week's Tax Form Tuesday featured document.
In case you're a new sole proprietor who will be attaching a Schedule C to your 1040 for the first time this filing season, don't freak out about the instruction to enter your employer identification number, or EIN. You might not need one, but the IRS' Do You Need an EIN page will help you determine that and, if you do, provides links to where you can apply for one.
You will need, however, to enter your employment code in Box B on Schedule C. You'll find the list of Principal Business or Professional Activity Codes on the last few pages of the Schedule C instructions.
And if you and your spouse each materially participate in your business, take note of Line G. This is where you note that you materially participated in the business. When both husband and wife do so and file a joint return, they can opt to be taxed as a qualified joint venture instead of as a partnership. The Schedule C instructions have more on this election.
Now to the fun stuff. Filling out your Schedule C.
Part I, reporting income: This relatively short section is pretty straightforward.
The IRS wants you to add up all your gross earnings and enter the amount on line 1.
Remember, this includes even those for which you didn't make quite enough to be issued a 1099. You also must report income such as the value of bartered goods or services.
And, as line one notes, this includes income reported to you on a Form W-2 where the "Statutory employee" box on that form was checked. While your report those earnings on Schedule C, Social security and Medicare taxes should have been withheld from your earnings. That means you don't owe self-employment tax on these earnings.
If you sell products instead of services, you'll enter any returns and allowances on line 2 then subtract them to get the amount that goes on line 3.
Line 4 is for more product adjustments, specifically the cost of goods sold from further down the form (line 42). Yep, in figuring the cost of your goods sold to enter here, you have to fill out Part III, coming up later. I know, it's a bit confusing but we are talking taxes here, so….
Line 5 is for gross profit so far, followed by that great catch-all "other" on line 6 for additional earnings. The instructions have more on what could go here (for example, reserve income, bad debts you recovered, interest on notes and accounts receivable).
Finally, on line 7, you get your total, gross income.
Part II, counting up expenses: Now to the more fun stuff. Tallying all the business expenses that can reduce your gross income and thereby cut your tax bill.
Record keeping obviously is crucial here. Good documentation can ensure you write off a wide range of business expenses.
As the image above shows, your expenses cover such things as advertising, auto costs, supplies, legal fees, repairs and maintenance, depreciation and Section 179 expenses, and office expenses, which aren't to be confused (although it's easy to do so) with home office costs. Those are addressed separately in this section.
And don't forget work-related travel and the item that started this whole post, meal expenses incurred while doing business.
I like to use the expense categories listed in this Schedule C section as guidelines for all my expense receipts.
You'll also find in Part II a line (#26) for wages you paid to folks you hired to help you conduct your business, such as bookkeepers, receptionists and salespeople. Production worker salaries, however, are counted as part of the cost of goods sold in Part III (coming up).
There's also a line (#19) for amounts put into pension and profit-sharing plans. This is, however, is for contributions you made for employees of your company, not to your own self-employed retirement account. If the plan included contributions for you, you'll enter those amounts made as an employer on your behalf on your Form 1040 Schedule 1 as adjustment to income.
Now you're starting to see why it's a good idea to have a tax adviser when you're the boss, especially if you have employees!
Underneath the columns for expense amounts, you'll find lines to enter the aforementioned home office deduction, which also require you file Form 8829.
And once you calculate your net profit or loss on 30, you'll be reminded that you also likely will owe self-employment tax.
Part III, cost of goods: If your business sells merchandise to customers, here is where you tally, as the section's header notes, the costs of those goods.
You typically reach this amount when you conduct inventories into account at the beginning and end of your tax year. The tax code allows an exception for small business taxpayers, who can opt not to keep an inventory, but who use a method of accounting for inventory that clearly reflects income.
If, like me, you make your money by providing services instead of selling actual goods, then you can skip sell services instead of goods, then you can skip this section.
Part IV, about your auto: When it comes to business related automotive expenses, you can enter your actual automotive costs (gas, oil changes, repairs, insurance, etc.) or you can take the standard mileage rate that the IRS sets each year.
For 2019 taxes, the standard rate is 58 cents per business mile. For you planning purposes, it drops to 57.5 cents per mile for business travel in 2020.
Regardless of which mileage deduction method you use, don't forget to add your parking fees and tolls to your vehicle cost total.
And note that the IRS wants to know about all your miles on this vehicle, not just your business driving totals. That's why I always note my Chevy's odometer reading on Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of each year.
And because I have tracked my total and my business travel mileage, I can answer "yes" to the last two questions on in this section:
Do you have evidence to support your deduction?
If "Yes," is the evidence written?
Part V, Other Expenses: The last section of Schedule C is a catchall area for all those ordinary and necessary business expenses that didn't seem to fit in the form's previous lines.
This generally includes professional organization membership dues, business publication subscriptions (both for paper and online versions) and business gifts to clients.
The IRS notes, however, there are some items that you can't count here. Do not include the cost of business equipment or furniture or replacements or permanent improvements to property. It's also a hard no in this section on personal, living and family expenses.
You can find more on allowable and disallowed business expenses in IRS Publication 535.
Good or not so good business view: And there you have it. After finishing up Schedule C you have a good overview of just how well (or not) your business is doing, as well as where you're spending money.
While it's no fun paying taxes, at least owing them means that your business made money. Congratulations!
And since you are making money on your business throughout the year, be sure to pay Uncle Sam his portion throughout the year as estimated taxes.
